Batch file using 'start' causes the program icon in taskbar to be blank

Q: Batch file using 'start' causes the program icon in taskbar to be blank

start "" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --app=<some url>
This launches the program but the taskbar icon is blank.
Is there a switch or some other method to not have a blank icon ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Whenever I run a batch file, the icon in the taskbar is blank/default.
Is there any way to make it so it's the cmd.exe icon?

Have you tried right clicking, properties, change icon? If so, you might want to rebuild the icon cache and restore default file associations to see if that fixes it.

4 Apps of mine run a batch file that -tries- to call/start and EXE program. These Batch files need to work with OS XP thru Win 10. Win 10 has a pop-up window asking user if its okay to run/execute my EXE. No other Win version does this and thus I suspect a timing problem.

Here is a few lines from my BAT file:

Code:
if %WinVer%-5.0 LSS 0.0 (pause) else (timeout /t 8)
call %od-tools%\base4DOS.exe /openLF %FCname% %od-user% %FCexit% > nul
@echo off
I have tried the following but will this work on older OS versions?

Code:
start /wait "" "%od-tools%\base4DOS.exe" /openLF %FCname% %od-user% %FCexit% > nul
This doesn't work either. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Phil

A:Start a program from a batch file

Can you please post a screenshot of the popup message?

I'm guessing it might be a 'smartscreen' message as you don't specify it. I get this popping up sometimes when installing less common programs I've just downloaded. It's more widely described as an internet site filter.

But quite why that would be the popup you encounter in this case isn't obvious.

Assuming my guess is correct, the following should help you decide what to do. You scan also research 'smartscreen'.

I use a program called Second Copy to update my computer with data from our server when at work. It is a good program but my problem is that Second Copy is set to run (on my camputer) all the time and it errors out when it cannot find the server drives to back up to. What I would like to do is add a command to start Second Copy to a batch file that my computer runs: the batch file checks for the presence of the server and simply exits if it is not there. Here is the part of the batch file:
==============
@echo off
::The program checks to be sure the drive is present
:rogram exits if drive not present
if exist h:\excludework.txt goto WorkBackup
goto Continue
:WorkBackup
::Start Second Copy if I am on the network
"C:\Program Files\SecCopy\SecCopy.exe"
pause
==============

This starts Second Copy but the batch file halts until Second Copy is closed and I want the batch file to continue rather than waiting. Is there some sort of a switch I can add to this line? I tried using the Start command i.e.
start "C:\Program Files\SecCopy\SecCopy.exe"
but could not get it to work. It opens a second cmd window. Likewise I could not get
start "C:\Program Files\SecCopy\SecCopy.exe" /b
to work.
Can anybody help me out on this? I have not tried call but it seems like it would have the same problem of waiting for Second Copy to close.

Hi! I need some help with a batch file I'm writing.

Here's what I've got so far:

Code:
taskkill /F /IM sidebar.exe
START "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe"
The first line works great; it terminates sidebar.exe fine. But, the next line is the problem. It doesn't open up the sidebar.exe, but instead opens up a useless command prompt window:

What am I doing wrong? I tried "....sidebar.exe \showgadgets" (some random argument I found online), but that does not work either. I also tried running the command via CMD, no luck. Tried CMD "Run As Administrator", no luck either.

EDIT: If I navigate to the Windows Sidebar folder with cd, then from there I can just type "sidebar.exe" and it will run. But how do I do that in a batch file?

Any ideas?

~Ibrahim~

P.S. Also...if anyone knows how to run a batch command automatically when on battery, that'd be lovely. Any powercfg gurus here?

I use the taskbar (launchbar?) to start my favourite programs, such as Excel, and some 8-10 files

That was until approximately 10 days ago, when clicking on a file name only opened Excel, and I have to

Any suggestions?

Hi Wayne,
You haven't moved or renamed these Excel files, have you?
Does the same problem also happen with Word?
You could try repairing your office installation.
Right-click on the Start Button and select Control Panel>Programs and Features; wait for the list of installed programs to populate, then highlight Microsoft Office; click CHANGE up above the window, then REPAIR. You may have 2 repair options; if so, try the local one first and see if that does the trick.

Hope that helps.

but I now need a little help please ....
It tells me to add the batch file to the Start folder but I am flummoxed and don't have a clue how to do that.
As it is I have to run it at each start-up and the fleeting black screen with white text comes and goes before I can read it properly.

Sounds like they want you to put in the Startup Folder at: C:\Users\"your user name"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup then leave a shortcut to it in there.

The file associations for .LNK files on a Vista Home Premium SP1 computer have changed from their default association to another application program, ie. Internet Explorer Picture Viewer, with the result that none of the program shortcut icons or desktop icons launch their respective programs - they all attempt to launch Explorer.  Changing the file association on an individual shortcut results in all shortcuts being changed to the selected program.  Is there a way to change the .LNK file associations back to the Windows default in order to relate the shortcuts to their respective application program?

Until recently, whenever I opened a program by clicking on the program icon pinned to the taskbar, that icon was replaced by the active program button. This is the behavior I want in order to keep the taskbar uncluttered. However, I recently mistakenly unpinned an icon for Mozilla Thunderbird and after re-pinning the program start icon, now the active program button appears in addition to the startup icon rather than replacing it. I have pinned and unpinned the program several times, and even after a restart of the machine, the same result persists. The problem seems to be limited to Thunderbird, at least in my limited research.

If I pin other new programs to the taskbar, the expected replacement behavior occurs, even after un-pinning and re-pinning, e.g for Microsoft Word.

If I un-pin and re-pin programs that have been pinned to the taskbar from before the time this issue occurred with Thunderbird, the expected replacement behavior occurs, e.g Mozilla Firefox

Task Scheduler. Create a new/basic task. You can invoke your batch script there. This can occur after boot completes, after user logon, etc. You can set it to run daily weekly hourly, etc. You can even have it delay X (preseleted time amounts) minutes/hours after boot/logon if you want.

Hello to all,
I can use some help in understanding and fixing a vanished program icon. I'm running APC Personal 2.2 on W7 Ultimate 64 bit. Up until I noticed the other day the APC icon which was customized to show on taskbar did and was. Yesterday I noticed the icon gone. I ran it manually and the last recorded event was 9/1/10 and there have been at least one since then. I turned off the display icon and then turned it on an it appeared on the taskbar. Rebooted, not there. Used CCleaner to check startup programs and it showed that the program was listed to start. I disabled it and then re-enabled it and got a pop up from my firewall about it contacting home. Rebooted and it still did not appear.
I feel as if the program is not running until I turn it on manually even though it says it is in the configurations section of the program. Any help/assistance or opinions welcome. Thanks
glennc

Usually moving the item to another folder/drive etc

Windows also has an auto disk/desktop clean facility, whereby it will remove icons/shortcuts from the desktop

It could have been triggered by an M/S update!

Why dont you right click on the program icon in it's folder, scroll down to "send shortcut to desktop"

Folks,

I'm running a background monitoring program, CAM v2.1.5 by NZXT (for my AIO liquid cooler). When I minimize the program, the taskbar icon defaults to the Windows system icon.

1. If I right click the program's taskbar icon (the defaulted Windows system icon), I can select "pin this program to the taskbar". There is no change.

2. If I then right click the program's taskbar icon (the defaulted Windows system icon), I can select "unpin this program from the taskbar". At that point, the CORRECT icon appears.

3. I can then maximize and minimize the program from the taskbar and the correct icon remains.

The program is set to autostart when my machine is turned on.

How do I get the correct icon to appear on the taskbar without having to pin and unpin?

Additional information: The Start Menu icon is also corrupted. Right clicking the start menu icon, properties, shortcut, shows the proper "looking" icon, yet the icon on the Start Menu is the default Windows system icon.

Choosing the 64x64 sized icon from the program's install folder as the start menu shortcut icon seems to have fixed the behavior.

Thanks,
Ken

My Mum has been having troubles with her internet connection - she can connect, but in any 24 hour period it either disconnects several times, or the connection speed (ADSL2+) slows to a crawl, slower than dialup. At other times it works fine.

We have troubleshooted every possibility on the ADSL connection - line checks, filtering is with a central splitter, everything has been isolated for testing, even the modem has been replaced.

The only possibility I can see left is a network card problem or a virus. The DSL light on the modem is always lit & the ISP has confirmed no dropouts since they checked/fixed the line.

A thing of concern to me is that periodically something is appearing on the taskbar. A gray tab button pops up on the taskbar, just for a couple of seconds. It doesn't have a name on it as a regular program would have - just an icon. The icon is the white box with the blue band across the top, indicative of an .exe or .bat file. This appears only for a couple of seconds and then goes.

I've seen it appear when the computer starts up, but it doesn't come on every time. At other times it appears on the taskbar whether there are other programs running in the foreground or whether just the desktop is on and only other background processes running.

I have previously sent a hijack this file for scrutiny and it was reported clean. However Hijack this only shows programs/processes running at the time. A sugge... Read more

Hello all

Sorry if this is already a much discussed topic but...

First to state, I am using Win7 in as bout a classic format as I can, no aero and everything else basic. Basically for the interface the thing looks & works as much like 95 as I can.

As well I am using the never combine option on the task bar.

So how can I stop the upward grouped roll out of all the other open window taskbar icons I have from the same program when ever I roll over any of the taskbar icons

In other words I, might have about 6 windows of my browser open, all at different sites, and all being represented by a task bar Icon.

Then if I roll over any of these, I get this menu that jumps up to the top of each one, showing again all the taskbar icons I already have being shown on the horizontal taskbar.

Basically these are not needed as they are all already accessible, as well this menu often blocks my view from the screen at being able to see what's on the page at the same time I am trying to decide which window I might like to reopen. So all in all its a complete pain.

Hopefully this is something that can be done

Thanks for any help

Hy there
I want to load a file in a program from a batch file, problem is that I don't know the name of the file so I need something like:

========================================
@echo off
start c:\Program Files\Sound Forge\Forge.exe d:\*.wav
========================================
so if there is a way to load a file without knowing the name i''ll apreciate it
Thanks for your time in advance.

A:How to load a file in a program from batch file

The program would have to support loading files using a wildcard, or by specifying a folder of files to load.

If it doesn't, you could use a For loop to generate a list of file names to be used in the Start command.

This will pass the complete path for each file located in one folder. It does not get filenames from subfolders:

Code:
@Echo Off
Set _List=
Set _Folder=D:\
Push %_Folder%
For /F "Tokens=* Delims=" %%I In ('Dir "%_Folder%\*.wav" /A-D /B') Do Call _Build "%%~I"
Start "" "C:\Program Files\Sound Forge\Forge.exe" %_List%
Goto :EOF
:_Build
Set _List=%_List% "%~f1"

You are limited to 8191 characters per line, so depending on where the files are, you can quickly reach that. The start command uses 65 characters leaving 8126 for the files in the list.
For example, if the files are in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Music\Samples\, that will use 70 characters per file, plus the length of the file name. Assuming only 11 characters per name, + 3 characters per file for quotes and a space between names, you'd be limited to 96 files.

This version switches to the folder containing the files so you don't need to specify the path, but some programs might not like having the working folder changed:

Code:
@Echo Off
Set _List=
Set _Folder=D:\
Push %_Folder%
For /F "Tokens=* Delims=" %%I In ('Dir "%_Folder%\*.wav" /A-D /B') Do Call _Build "%%~I"
Start &... Read more

Hello

I have been for some time seeing an annoying icon flashing up in my toolbar on start up. It is only there for a fraction of a second and too quick to click on. It appears to be a blue square with what appears to be a white laptop with a white blob in the middle. Can anyone help solve the mystery, confirm if this should be appearing and if not how I go about getting rid of it. It appears around 2 mins 22 seconds after start up. I have tried attaching the video to show you but I cant seem to upload videos here

If you could help that would be great

Hello ashutosh,

It may be a glitch with yours, I see the list of opened windows when I have mine set this way. You might see if logging off and on, or restarting the computer may clear the problem.

Dear all,

I have a computer with 32 (physical) cores and need to run a total of 10,000 statistical simulations. Each simulation is started with:

> program.exe "scriptName.txt"

where 'scriptName.txt' is 'script1.txt' , 'script2.txt', etc.
The program automatically quits after completion, but each program has a varying runtime.

Now my question: I have found information on how to start programs sequentially as well as simultaneously (using batch files), but does anyone know how to start 10,000 programs in groups of 32? The idea is to run 32 programs simultaneously, and whenever a program quits, a new one should be opened automatically in order for the 32 available cores to be efficiently used.

Thank you!

A:Batch file to run 10,000 instances of a program, in groups of 32

Hi

What software are you using to run the realisations? Is it Windows based or Unix based?

I know how to accomplish this using a TCShell script but not .bat files unfortunately. If I provide the shell script, perhaps someone could convert to .bat format.

Generally simulations use RAM as opposed to CPU, since each realisation runs with the same simulation parameters and data, with only the random seed number varying - this depends largely on the software used. How much RAM do you have available?

Golden

Hi,

I'm trying to create a batch file to run a program that needs a "connect" button pressed to actually run after opening.
Is this possible?

There is no option within the program itself to connect automatically when opening, just the usual "launch at system start-up" which I don't want to use, since I need it very rarely.

This is a crucial part of a batch file that includes starting other programs at the same time, and everything works great, except having to manually "connect" this one program.

I am trying to help a friend by writing a batch file to backup a data base. She currently has one which, I assume uses XP's built in write to CD soft ware, I have just installed a DVD writer for her and the batch file will no longer work. I thought that it would be possible to modify the file to open Nero and write to the dvd drive but I am not having much luck. Question is it possible to open and run a program from a batch file and if so what is the command for it.
I have tried "C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\nero.exe" and all I get is program is not a recognised command etc. Can any one help or should this old fool stick to playing games?

A:Make a batch file open a program in XP

open notepad type

cd "c:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero"
nero.exe

save as *.bat file

This will open the program from the batch file

I've been working on a little DIY project with a custom game controller and I've run into a roadblock. I have a simple batch written that plays a sound when a key is pressed followed by another. The program works fine and responds nicely - but I need the sound to play in the background when a game's exe is running. My problem is that the keystrokes aren't recognized by the batch when the game exe is running, so the sound never plays. I don't know all that much about programming, and this is one of my first experiences. Is there a way to get the keystrokes recognized even if the command window isn't on top? Here's what's in the .bat.

Hey everyone,

Is it possible to run a program that is on another pc over a network? I am trying to create a small batch script that I can run to change a setting on a networked pc. It works fine on my pc, but I keep getting a "This is not a valid Win32 application" followed by "access denied" when running it from a different computer...

Is there a way? If not, is there another method of changing the system timezone without running rundll32.exe (Which is where my problem is at following this line to change it)...

Code:
pushd //the_pc_name's_c_drive/

// error here from rundll32
RunDLL32 shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL TIMEDATE.cpl,,/Z %a%
Thanks for any help
