Preferred Solution: Explorer.exe is wack.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My explorer.exe does not want to cooperate with me. It "does" a combination of the feared "restarting" and "just shutting off and not coming back on."

R really don't know what to do as I have tried at least 20 or 30 of the things listed if you google "fix explorer.exe." Just tell me what you need to know.

By the way, give me links to anything you want me to download or something.
Thanks for prompt help!
I will reply within 24 hours to posts.
I will also post when this is resolved, because I know it annoys people, not knowing what the deal is...

With MBAM I also found "Malware.Trace" and "Broken.OpenCommand".

I haven't done full scans because they freeze and take a long time. Other things freeze also and sometimes it says windows explorer isn't responding and it restarts it. Even though I removed the above viruses my computer still behaves like this.

Hi. This is gonna sound odd but every time I move my mouse real fast it goes out of control. If I don't move the mouse the cursor stays but with one little twitch and it is half-way across the screen again. This also tends to happen in Linux but Win2k is the worst. If I don't move it for about 3 seconds it goes back to normal until I move it fast again. And I am not even moving it that fast!!! Please help. Thank you.

I recently changed hardware on my pc. I did not uninstall or change anything about my hard drive, but when using it in the new pc, it kept telling me to activate windows. This was strange, never happened to me before so why now. So i go through so much
trouble trying to fix it and nothing worked. Even in settings under activation blah blah, it still wouldn't let me activate because "the servers were down". ok. So i call Microsoft support, and he keeps trying to get me to repurchase windows 10.
No. Bad customer service  rep. He did not help at all just made me do everything i already did and  when it said the servers were down, he told me its because i don't have a legit license. I downloaded windows 10 when it was free in 2016 or whenever.
So i never got a product key. So I used to windows 10 installer tool and it seemed to work, the watermark was gone. but later that day when i came home it was back. Then i tried the activation again and it worked. This was incredibly frustrating and annoying.
so i wanted to leave negative feedback to windows/microsoft. But i dont have the feedback hub, so i go to windows store and try to search bnut the search function doesnt work. I dont know why i thought any other windows app would be easy to use after everything
i just experienced. I have no question. This isnt about windows 8. This is the only place i found to try to tell microsoft anything. so tedious and annoying. yuck.

There are buttons on my main computer screen where you can adjust the screen to fill the entire screen, but on my laptop I have no clue where the buttons are to adjust the width and everything to expand to fit the entire screen and not have an inch on each side. Does any of that make sense? Help please.

So I tried getting it to work when suddenly other programs on my computer stopped connecting to my computer as well, first it was firefox then it was google chrome, and I.E. worked for a while but then stopped the only thing I can connect to is AIM

also I can only access the internet while in safe mode.

It says I'm connected to my wireless network on the bottom right, but get nothing in the browsers

Also while trying the ipconfig /renew

this message would show

I'm not sure what It means, I've never encountered this message before

I got an old Inspiron 4000 Dell and installed WinXP on it. I hit the "34 Minute Hiccup" so I deleted a file named WDMA_es3.inf. I assumed this was my audio driver for my laptop. When I got XP set up there was of course no sound. When I tried to install the ESS Maestro 3i driver my computer wouldn't start up so I removed the drivers in safe mode. The sound card should be an ESS Maestro 3i or something like that. Are there any other drivers I could use? any response would really help. Thanks in advance!!!

Hi guys! For a while now, the volume on certain websites has been messed up for me and I've tried everything and have come to a conclusion that maybe something's wrong, so I did a virus scan and then all of a sudden this message from McAffee started popping up:

I couldn't find the file, but if it's infected I need to delete it, maybe that is what is causing problems. I honestly don't know. Here is my HJT log.

Save the report as BSOD.txt.Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply. The fact that your system reboots routinely...would seem to not indicate a malware situation, IMO. But we will examine that possibility later, depending on what we find out in your next post. For the time being, I will leave your HJT data intact, rather than removing such. HJT logs are handled in one of our malware forums...rather than move you to one of those, a quick exploration of possibly system issues seems expedient in your case.Louis

Everything works fine until I get to number 16_sun city . Then for some reason I can't figure out, it skips from number 16 to number 20. After that things go completely nuts as the pix aren't viewable in proper order. 20 is followed by 18 for example.

I did a restart of pc knowing it wouldn't do anything. It didn't. I'm stumped.
Anyone else have this problem?

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

Can Explorer in Vista be configured so that your selected menu preferences remain fixed?

In the right pane, I set 'Name', 'Size', 'Folder Path', 'Type', and 'Date Modified', using the 'Details' vew. I then clicked Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> selected my preferences (e.g., Show hidden files..., etc.) -> Apply to Folders -> Yes -> OK.

Despite these steps, after my system is awakened from sleep or rebooted, I get the default 'Artist', 'Genre', 'Rating', etc. in the right pane menu, even after searching for a non-media file, like a Word document. Microsoft seems bent on displaying multimedia file info. Surely there is some way to manage your preferences in Explorer. Has anybody been able to outwit Microsoft in this matter?

A:Selected menu items in Explorer won't stay + Explorer locking video files

Is there a way to stop Vista, especially Win Explorer, from locking video files. What a nuisance!

If I play a video file then decide to rename or delete it--even after exiting the software used to play the video--I often get the message that the file is still in use. Rubbish! The app is not in use as evidenced in Task Manager. Freeware Lock Hunter works most of the time in such instances, but I'm wondering if there is some registry key that could be changed to let me use my PC without having to contend with this kind of witless engineering.

Hi
When you see the black screen, open the Task Manager. Select File / New Task (Run...), type  explorer.exe  and click OK.
If the Desktop appears, perform the following.
1. Click Start and type regedit.exe in the search box. In the results, right click regedit.exe and select the Run As Administrator
option. This will open the registry editor.

2. Navigate to the following key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

3. With the Winlogon key selected, look in the right side for the value named
Shell.

4. Double click the Shell value to open. In the Value Data box, you should see
explorer.exe   and nothing else. If it shows anything else, change it to
Explorer.exe  and click OK.

Exit the registry editor, reboot the computer.

Let us know the results.

so i was browsing google trying to see if anyone else shared my problem and I found a post from this site about 5 years old,
http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-software/398862-windows-explorer-flashing.html

the only problem is it was never solved.

Like he says its very hard to explain but I'll try to elaborate. When I open 'My Computer', the address bar immediately starts flashing multiple times per second, flashing meaning it will drop down/close, drop down/close, over and over. Because of this I cannot access my C: drive or my cd drive or anything through Windows explorer.

does anybody have any idea why this is happening?

I was told to also post this iunder this category.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

Thanks,
Lisa

Been grappling for some time to customizing the right pane of either Win7 or Win10 (not sure if they respond the same) to allow permanent column and column title arrangements. Ideally I would like to apply such attributes to a specific folder and all it's sub-folders. An example is below:
I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.

Hello everyone and thank you for participating in this wonderful site.

My computer is a Pentium 4, 2.80 GHz, Running Windows XP Proffessional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.
The problem I'm writing about has been there for about a year. All in all it's the same prolem ever since, but every once in a while some detail changes, like a new error message.
Every about 5-15 minutes the Start Menu Taskbar and the desktop icons disappear (Explorer crushes). Most of the times they reappear shortly after, but sometimes they don't, and then I use task manager to run explorer and then they reappear. Yet, sometimes the computer stucks altogether, and I have to restart. In addition to that, many popups open when I surfe the web using Internet Explorer. The popup changes every few days, but in between it's always the same one.
Another point is that while the crushing of explorer can occur anytime, it most often occurs while I open or close Internet Explorer windows.

Sometimes I get an error message, and as I said, they change from time to time. But still, here are 2:

Every time I put my laptop to sleep and have a Windows Explorer window open, the CPU goes to 100% for several minutes after waking up the computer. If I wait for a long time, it will eventually go back to normal, but most often I close all the Windows explorer
windows, manually or using Task Manager, and reopen them again to get to a normal CPU working load. I have not been able to identify clearly with process explorer what is causing this, although SHCORE.DLL is one of the suspects. Searching on Internet I have
surprisingly not found many similar cases, so I do not know how to proceed.
Running sfc gives a few errors, which do not seem to be possible to repair, but I doubt it has anything to do with this problem.

We have started seeing this issue with our new deployments of Windows 8.1 - we have around 7 drive mappings pointing to a n EMC NAS (VNX7600) and although I can access all drive4s if I drop to the command prompt -windows explorer FAILS to display all mapped
drives. We see this issue over the VPN which would indicate this issue is somewhat related to network latency and Windows Explorer trying to enumerate and display all pertinent info such as free/used disk space.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hello, I really hope one of you can help...

My desktop PC has suddenly developed a niggling little problem that means it is all but useless now. When opening most programs, IE, Windows Explorer and Opera the screen gets caught in a juddering motion that seems to act like the software is switching between Restore, Full Screen and Maximize functions, at the rate of about 6 switches a second. As you can probably imagine, this means the computer is more or less useless, and it's getting very frustrating. I've called the shop where we bought it, and got the usual "It's not our problem, try system restore, or restore factory settings". Tried system restore about 3 days ago, and no matter where I try to restore to it's having none of it, and then I got stop in a lovely "Packard Bell recovery program (which includes the system restore program)" loop, that stops actually being able to boot into Windows as it goes on a restarting loop, again, and again and again, until all of a sudden it'll boot. For this reason, System Restore is now switched off so I can continue getting into Windows. Programs not affected are Media Player, Photoshop, Outlook and RealPlayer plus others.

I assume this is a software issue, but I would really like to be able to sort this without having to wipe the whole computer.... Please can anybody help!

Dear Tech guys,
I badly need your support. Day before yesterday (01-Aug-06) night I upgraded the yahoo toolbar and used their norton anti spy to scan. Then I shut down the system and started to work the next day. Every thing is perfectly ok except for one thing. In Windows Explorer, on any folder or drive if I double click or open I get a crash. If I do explore then there is no problem.

Below is the dialog that comes whenever we double click or open (for eg: on C:\ or any folder in the left side pane of the windows explorer. If I just keep expanding the + of the tree no problem, only on clicking the item to open the following error occurs.)

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

program: C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

This Application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I am running on Windows XP SP 2. I dont have google toolbar. I have yahoo tool bar installed. I have tried uninstalling it and installing it again and other combinations as well.

I have also tried sfc /scannow as well. It did not work.

It doesnt look like any adware or spyware (yahoo's norton spyware had done a complete run and no problems in the system as reported by them).

What should I do now to get back to normal operation of windows explorer.

Thanks and Regards,
Naga Kumar S

I would un-install the Yahoo Toolbar and then put Google Toolbar in, Then I would try to download .NET framework 2.0

and install it. If it tells you that you already have it re-install it anyway.

If I try to right click and open any of these it brings it up in Ulead photo explorer.
No options listed to open with another program.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Is this why my dvd burner will not work?

Hey guys, thanks for viewing my post... This has been going on for about 2 weeks now and I can't figure out the cause...

Every time I open "My Computer" or anything with windows explorer, everything is fine for a few seconds... then starts to slow... then explorer completely locks up and crashes without an error message... screen shows only the wallpaper for a few minutes... then explorer starts back up, icons come back, etc and all is normal again.

This only seems to happen when utilizing Windows Explorer. I've tried to change the settings on the automatic thumbnail view thinking THAT was the problem, but it always crashes before I can go in there. (Plus I haven't changed settings in that area any time recently, and I do a lot of graphics so a thumbnail preview is a must)

I assume this is just a dumb XP problem, but searching for it with terms like "windows explorer crashes" etc comes up with only Internet Explorer results... I have 1.5g of ram and a decent processor in my HP Pavilion a535w... and only since a few weeks ago have I had any problems like this. NEED HELP!

Also, ever since about a month after getting a new graphics card... sometimes it takes 1-5 tries to get my computer to boot if just recently shut off or restarted. The computer appears to come on, but it doesn't make any loading clicks, and the monitor won't turn on.

I don't think they're related, but both are equally annoying.

I have an odd bug cropping up on multiple machines lately with XP Pro SP2. I've yet to find any other instances on the net, but I'm not exactly sure of what to search for. I open Windows Explorer and leave it open. If anything happens on the Desktop (say a file is deleted, created, name changed, anything) the Windows Explorer will list Multiple "Desktops" at the top of the list on the left pane.

Now these "Desktops" are actual folders that exist on my Desktop and I can click on them and see the contents of each folder, and in the address bar the real folder name is shown, but for some reason Windows Explorer displays them as "Desktop" instead of the real folder name in the left pane.

Also when this happens I can no longer navigate the folder tree properly. Plus signs to expand a tree no longer work, when I double click on a subfolder to open it, it doesn't refresh the left pane. I can close out Windows Explorer and reopen and all is well again until the next change. This is a very very frustrating bug and even happens on clean installs. Has anyone else had experience with this bug or have any clues what might be causing it? Thanks

BTW, this clean install was using nLite to slipstream SP2 and automate the install. The only other options I used was disabling services that I always disable anyway such as the firewall, indexing, etc...

About a week ago, I turned on my laptop to find that Internet Explorer was freezing and crashing. When it crashed, I wouldn't get the normal Windows error reporting message, but instead Windows Explorer froze and I was forced to restart. When I restarted -- stupidly, more than 10 times in 2 hours -- the first few times, a few ad windows and anti-virus downloader screens popped up. I scanned with Housecall, and an infection with Mal-vundo came up that it couldn't repair. I downloaded SpyBot, AdAware, and AVG free, and not much popped up that I knew how to fix other than a dat file called __c001BA5E, and a few others. I tried to delete these on reboot, and it seemed to work for awhile. Soon enough, though, both explorers were crashing again. I've tried to avoid rebooting, but I can't help it. Hey, I am having problems with my other computer suddenly closing both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer applications, such as Control Panel, My Computer, etc...(Windows XP Home Edition)
When i click on either one, lets say the my computer icon, a pop up of the my computer folder thing flashes for a split second then disappears, the computer freezes for about a second, shows only the desktop, then a few seconds later the icons start appearing on my desktop and my start taskbar comes back. The screen is back to normal with no lag, but the my computer pop up is no longer there. The same thing happens with internet explorer, but it just happens alot quicker.
Does anyone know what could possibly be the problem of this, and maybe how to fix it? Thank You in advance.

The windows explorer command (not explorer.exe) works from the quick launch tool bar but does not work from the MS Office tool bar; the error message is 'there was a problem sending the command to the program'. Previously, it worked from this tool bar, and then stopped working. All other commands from this tool bar including explorer.exe work. However, Explorer.exe starts with 'My documents and one has then to get to c:\ after expanding 'my computer'. Explorer.scf works when it is double clicked in the folder in which the buttons of the MSOffice tool bar are stored.

I would like to know why explorer.scf does not work from the MSOffice tool bar, and what can be done to fix this; what does the extension *.scf mean?

Is there a way that one can change the position of folders in the Windows explorer? e.g. to have 'My Computer' rather than my documents on the top?

Thank you,
Preet
