PLEASE HELP! Unable to scan with HiJackThis - unable to run Zone Alarm or AVG!

Q: PLEASE HELP! Unable to scan with HiJackThis - unable to run Zone Alarm or AVG!

Something has taken over my computer. This virus closed my Zone Alarm firewall and AVG Anti Virus programs and I am unable to get them on again! I'm unable to run a HijackThis or run Malewarebytes programs either. The only way I can get online, is via shortcuts in my favorites menu, which I opened from a documents folder.

When this first happened, an "XP Total Security" window kept opening , and doing a scan for viruses at every reboot. Then it would prompt me to a website, to buy a program to fix it.

I was unable to run msconfig to uncheck it at start-up. I am unable to open the add/remove page in the control panel.

My computer is a 2005 HP Pavilion zv6000 series laptop, running XP.

I also tried System Restore, which I tried to run from Safe Mode, but it would not go back to before the problem.

I am unable to run any .exe programs at all.

I tried to Format the drive, but it would not let me do it.

I need this computer to find a job. I wish I could get a new computer one, but I just don't have the money.

Preferred Solution: PLEASE HELP! Unable to scan with HiJackThis - unable to run Zone Alarm or AVG!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: PLEASE HELP! Unable to scan with HiJackThis - unable to run Zone Alarm or AVG!

I forgot to mention that this virus disabled my web browsers too. It won't let me open them.

I have gone through all the steps to clean and protect my computer (Windows XP Dell) and thought I was really clever. Took me best part of a day. However, my partner can't now connect to the internet from his laptop, (also running Windows XP), and I am about to fall asleep trying to suss out how to find the IP address of the laptop to add to the trusted zone of Zone Alarms: which keeps flashing up messages that various addresses are trying to access my ports!! Help, before I lose all credibility. My computer is now trussed up like a turkey, and I am about to become single again. My computer is about to become disposable.Computer dunce (PS - read the tutorials about TCP and UDP. A:Unable To Add Laptop To Trusted Zone In Zone Alarm

I'm in the same situation, and have learned a few things. Go to Start > Run >cmd. In the black box, type ipconfig. This will give you the ip address of the computer you're on, as well as the gateway ip address of the wireless router. I also have zonealarm firewall, so I added the ip address to the trusted zone. You may also want to check your wireless router's info because depending on the security you've set, it may ask you for a code (WEP or WPA). Let's start here and see what happens. Sounds like this will be one for many inputs...

I am having a problem accessing my email account. When I click the Outlook Express icon, I get this error message:

Well I got a big problem.

A couple days ago I noticed network connectivity issues. Random connection drops, overall bad connection, etc. I recently had some really bad malware and I removed it, so I suspected leftover malware from the start. I went to check Windows Update to see if I missed a security update, and it wasn't even on my computer. Something removed the service completely off my computer, so I found a .reg to fix it. I then started Windows Update and found that I had 30 updates missing and updated all of them successfully.

I then decided to see what was going on with my Windows Firewall, only to find that it was also removed. Wasn't in my services or anything. So I downloaded the .reg to fix that, tried to activate the service, only to run into another roadblock that I still haven't been able to fix, an error stating

"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs".

Ok. So I checked my services again and I believe that some more were completely missing(Base Filtering Engine, NSI proxy Service). So to try and remedy this, I attempted an sfc /scannow in elevated cmd prompt.

Then another brick wall. I get to 59% and then I get this message

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Trustedinstaller service is turned on, so I have no idea why I'm getting this message. But... Read more

I am unable to activate IM security function of zone alarm because it conflict with nvappfilter.dll, a file used by nvidia firewall ( I think). What should I do to resolve the conflict ?

I have been really happy with the security that Zone Alarm has offered me so far, but I do have a few gripes with it as of late. If I try to open Firefox while Zone Alarm is running, I will get a "this page cannot be displayed" type error. Same thing if I use Internet Explorer. If I keep refreshing or restarting Internet Explorer it will eventually work. Only them am I able to open Firefox and get it to connect (let me know if that doesn't make any sense). Sometimes I have to shut down Zone Alarm to connect to the internet on either browser and this gets quite annoying. I want to keep the security it brings, but it can e quite a hassle. It also either takes forever or won't allow me to log in to websites like MySpace.com. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Hello slyblackdragon,I see you have an open HJT log posted in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum. You shouldn't make any changes to your system, while your HJT log is posted, as that could change the results of the posted log, making it difficult to properly clean your system. At this point, the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.I'm closing this topic until you are cleared by the HJT Team. If, after your log has been cleaned, you still need help, please PM a Moderator and we will re-open this topic. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Hello -

You've posted a log using the Beta version of HijackThis. At this time, we prefer to use v1.99.1

Please read this sticky topic, and then do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.
What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

I'm logged in as the administrator and am getting a message
"We were unable to run the Automated Support Assistant, possibly due to security settings on your computer."

Can someone offer me some guidance.

FYI, I don't have Norton AV on this system it does have eTrust Inoculate"

A:Unable to run Symantec Scan Assistant

In order to use that system, I believe you have to allow a applet to download and install. You may have a setting in your eTrust firewall that is blocking the necessary utility or you may have your browser's security settings set to block it. If it were Zone Alarm Pro, I would suggest you turn off your Mobil Code control... {includes script blocking} You might check Tools > Internet Options > Security and set it to default.

Hi and welcome to Tenforums.
The System File Checker (sfc /scannow), sometimes needs to be run several times, with reboots in-between, before things get fixed. Please see the tutorial here:
SFC Command - Run in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

If after at least 3 runs, with reboots in-between, you still have issues, please open an Administrative Command Prompt, and type

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
Find the text file on your desktop, and paste it here so we can have a look at what's being flagged.

Good evening, and thank you for what seems to be a great forum!

On to my problems, I will try my best to make it clear.

I know I have had several spyware. I've tried my best to remove them using multiple programs. I'm running a registered version of Trend 14, plus I've scanned and cleaned with the following programs (in no particular order)
- Ad-Aware
- Spybot search and destroy
- Spywareblaster (as recommended on this site)
- Cleanup
- Panda (according to the 5 steps)
- Vundofix

At first, I found several threats, and removed them as the different programs suggest. However after a few reboots, AVG, Spybot, Trend and Panda were unable to complete the scan. Every time I get the error message saying the program has encountered a problem and needs to close. That goes for the Panda scan as well, but then it is Iexplore which needs to close.

Also, when rebooting, I get the same error message for explorer.exe.

Other than that, things seem to be running normally.

I have tried my best to comply to the 5 step guide before posting my log.

XP Pro SP2, all updates (I hope/think)
Trend 14 up to date
Opera 9.21

Thank you in advance for your assistance, looking forward to your advice.

Best regards,

[EDIT: Rebooted, and DSS worked fine]

Ok, I have officially made the dumbest mistake in my computer history.

After being afflicted by the rundll32.exe virus I attempted to run virus/trojan scans and I deleted some files in my startup directory thinking they were malware. However, now when I start up windows I get the log in screen and am unable to get passed it. It will now log into windows, load my personal settings and then it will instantly shut down that sign on, save the settings, and go back to the log in screen. I have done everything i can think of including safemode, safemode with command.... everything I do takes me back to that log in screen. I decided to just give up and tried to just use the Windows Restore CD, and I can't even use that because it wants to go straight to that same window log in screen, I couldn't get the restore prompts to come up.

Does anyone know anyway that I can abort the windows log in screen without being able to sign into windows ( I didn't know if perhaps there was a keystroke combo). I tried to find away through the F2 and F8 menus .... but I can't find away around that screen. Restore to "settings that worked correctly last time"... does nothing, back to windows log in.

I was so close to clearing the virus and now I have made it about 20 x worse. I fear there is nothing left to do than to call the Geek Squad.

If no thoughts on this, could someone explain how to get my computer to use the Windows XP reboot disk? It doesn't seem ... Read more

A:Unable to log into windows after running a scan

well, if windows is that messed up, and if it were me, I would download a linux boot disk, like say ubuntu, (its a small download and is fairly easy to use) and boot up off of that, (dont install it, just boot up off it) get all the files you want to save off of the computer using ubuntu (or linux distro of ur choice) and then use linux to erase the hard drive and then reload windows. (that is if u have a windows installation cd) instructions on how to do it: download the linux u want, I would say ubuntu, prolly the 32 bit version for combatibility, put it in your CD drive, restart the computer. it should automatically boot from CD, if not you will have to change the order in the bios. when it loads, it will give you a menu, the top option is try ubuntu without installing, click that. ubuntu will then boot up off your dvd drive. if you know how to boot from USB you can put linux on a flash drive as well. from there, you can access all the folders and files on your computer, save them to flash drives or move them to another computer via network, and then you can either restart the computer and reformat the drive using the windows disc and a clean install, or use linux partition manager to erase the drive. probably easiest to just do a clean install using the windows after that unless you are somewhat familiar with linux-backing files up with it is pretty straightforward but much beyond that can be confusing if your not familiar with it.

Hi, I'm pretty sure I downloaded a bad file, and now I can't run malewarebytes (it freezes during the scanning process). I got a memory dump blue screen last night and was able to reboot in safe mode. From there I tried to scan with malwarebytes and had the same problem. I am able to do a quick scan which shows no results, but the full scan does not work. I've tried to back up my files (I have been able to get some) but again, everything just freezes. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much!

This was a problem by itself. The program didn't want to re-install untill I found a leftover file hidden in Windows from the previous installation, (many people have this problem and I will address it in this forum after fix the present bug.(to make this thread as short as possible) Now, every time I try to Scan, Windows say:

I'm using also another printer, Epson C-88 with no problems. I keep the Xerox printer as the default machine in order to keep the Port "grabbed" by this machine.
I found an option on: Start>Settings>Printers>File>Capture Printer Port... but I don't know

Running windows 7 - my computer has been rock solid for about a year or so. Only very recently has it had stability problems.
Latest updates and changes:
1, update with Adobe Flash. My flash videos stopped working, so I disabled and re-enabled. worked for awhile and then IE became unstable upon loading. System would hang. CTL+ALT+DEL won't get me out of the hang.
I noticed that IE 11 was running far, far more memory than it should a few days ago, and was noticing issues with load times. Had intended to run scans, but have been busy. Get back, found the system had hanged again.
Ran CCCleaner - insta-hang, won't open. Ran in safe mode, same thing. Ran Malware bytes in safe mode, but it hangs at the same place every scan (doesn't pick anything up, but 27 minutes it will hang at the files in content.IE5. Avira Antivirus stalled and hanged scanning the same files.
I attempted to delete temporary internet files manually through windows explorer, and managed to clean them, although the IE 11 tool would hang and crash.
This morning, it successfully booted up, I got another hang in IE 11. I have deleted IE 11 using the remove update and IE 10 has been stable. I think it might just be a corrupted profile, but I am uncertain, and want to check here to see if there might be malware. The hang I got today in IE 11 is when I attempted to have the browser save passwords to my profile.

Your log appears clean. Let's try another scanner...

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
Make sure you click the ?Free Online Virus Scan? in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan.
Once it has finished save the activescan log. Then post that log in your next post.

If that won't work...try the one below....

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with

Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.

I am having trouble getting my HP printer to scan. It will scan an item from the printer glass top to "My Pictures" but absolutely will not scan from the printer top to MS Word. When I try it gives me this message on the Printer: "Scanning to Microsoft Word", after a few minutes it then says "Scanning Error. What I want to do is Scan written work on paper to MS word. I have had MS Word 2002 up until now and it has worked in the past to use the scanner to send things to Word. Any ideas folks?

It might identify the problem for the user.

I see that was included in the link you posted now...sorry. However, NAV is not one of the programs that tool checks or, can check and fix, apparently...it's not in the list...

I'm not sure if this is normal but in my ''Printers & Scanners'' window my printer is listed twice, but with different names:

The first represents the USB connection and is defaultly named ''Canon MP560 series printer'' while the second is for wireless and is defaultly named ''Canon MP560 series printer WS.''

The reason I know that these two different icons represent the two different connection methods is because before I activated the wireless printing the one labeled ''Canon MP560 series printer'' was listed by its self and no wireless capability was possible. Then after turning on wireless capability on the printer and after shutting it down and turning it back on I went into my network folder (without USB cable connected) and there was an icon for my canon printer. I have a Nikon Coolscan LS 5000 film scanner hooked up via USB cable to an Intel based Mac Pro running Windows Vista Ultimate x86. I am trying to use a program called Nikon Scan with it. The program itself starts up fine, but then immediately gives me the following error message:

Nikon scan was unable to detect any devices.

Any help you might offer regarding this problem would be greatly appreciated.

So we bought a new ASUS touchscreen with Win 8 x64 (not because we wanted to but because we had to make the move eventually) and its a pretty nice laptop honestly. Windows 8 is being it's different and difficult and buggy self but that's to be expected. However, I have an issue with my Konica Minolta Magicolor 1690MF. I can do everything but scan with it. When Link Magic (program written by Konica for GUI interface to the printer for scanning) tries to scan, it gets about halfway through the second page and the program stops working. I am using the windows 8 drivers and utilities directly from the Konica site but no love on the scanning side. Anybody have an idea as to why this is happening? My MF printer becomes just a printer and that's no good!!

A:Anyone else unable to scan with Konica Link Magic?

Update: After many different workaround attempts with actual Konica support staff (3 different guys), there was ultimately no solution to this issue. Paper Port as well as Link Magic doesn't work with Windows 8.....Windows photo scanner utility does work however. This, and the fact that other computers with literally any other OS (even a Mac) had no issues with these tasks, leads to the assumption that all drivers are accurate and it is simply a problem with compatibility between these programs and Windows 8.....FYI to anyone who wants to know. Konica hasn't called me back with a solution yet either....Hmmm
