ThinkPad x220 touchpad and trackpoint don't work

Q: ThinkPad x220 touchpad and trackpoint don't work

Hi, the touchpad and trackpoint in my X220 notebook don't work. I've tried under Windows 7, 8, 10 x64, and Linux too, but no success. I've tried several drivers, UltraNav and Synaptics with no results. They are enabled in the BIOS (ver. 1.42). The device manager recognises the hardware as "This device is working properly." Please help.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I just got thinkkpad T570 (512 ssd, core i7, windows 10 pro, 16 ram, UHD).Usually the movement of touchpad is perfect, when I just move the point with doing nothing.  However, when I open pictures, setting and access to websites ( even this website), touchpad, trackpoint adn mouse are getting slower, does not move seconds, and losing the cursor, and moves sort time, this happens constantly, then eventuall, the cursor keeps freezing. I tried to move touchpad, track point and mouse, moreover, typing keyboard, nothing happens. but when I turn it off, into sleepying mode, and turn on. Then it works. Is there any solution to this issue?

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

Good Day!I'm from the Philippines and I bought a refurbished thinkpad p50 from the US at 2016 and I extended its NBD warranty until June 1, 2018. The touchpad and trackpad suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago and it seems that the bios can't recognize them. The wifi reception seems to have also weaken, requiring me to be closer to the wifi source than before. I also tried reinstalling the drivers but it can't still identify the two pointing device. I'm actually planning to ship it to the US this week before my NBD warranty expires, but I don't know anyone from the US right now to avail the NBD service. May I know which address must I send it to, and the proper procedures to avail the repairs?I already spent $170 for the warranty extension last year, and I'll be spending another $100 for the DHL shipping to the US. May I also know if Lenovo will answer the shipping back to my country, since if not, I'll be spending another $100 for it to be shipped back to the Philippines?I also tried calling the service center from the US but I kept on having long calls with no response. Thanks!

After using the ThinkPad Yoga 260 for about two weeks, both the trackpoint and touchpad are now unresponsive. I've tried updating the drivers, rolling back the drivers and uninstalling the drivers and installing the latest one. None of it works. I managed to get it working once with a BIOS update but as soon as I put it in sleep mode, both became unresponsive again. Under Mouse Porperties the TouchPad option is grayed out and the TrackPoint option is sometimes grayed out and sometimes not. Regardless, it is completely unresponsive when enabled and disabled.

I have a Thinkpad T440S and have a problem that many have reported. The trackpoint and touchpad initially work upon bootup but then stop working after a few minutes.I believe I've tried everything (uninstall/reinstall drivers, replace keyboard, replace hard drive and do a complete reinstall of all software, update everything, etc etc etc). Nothing works and the only reason I can still use my computer is that a wireless mouse will work. It's time to get a new computer. I've bought Thinkpads for more than a decade but I still see this problem being reported for the T470 so Lenovo can't or won't bother to fix this. Any suggestions for a different brand and model? I do like the trackpoint so does that mean Dell is my only alternative?

Hello, I'm new here and I was hoping that someone could help me with my laptop.I have a IBM Lenovo T410, that was working very well with Windows 7 Professional, including the Touchpad and Trackpoint. Meanwhile, the hard drive got broke down and I decided to replace him with a SSD and upgraded SO to Windows 10, and then the problems became with Touchpad and Trackpoint. I already installed all the drives that I have found on Internet and on Lenovo forums and support pages but none works. Every time that I go to Control Panel > Mouse I get an error that tells me that there is a problem with Synaptics device, telling me to uninstall and reboot. Meanwhile, I installed windows 8.1 Pro, guessing that it could have some incompatibility with Windows 10, but the problem remains the same. Can anyone help me with this? How can I solve the problem? Where can I find the right drivers for my device?Thank you very much!

Hello community I have this old  thinkpad, which i am very fond of. However, recently the touchpad and trackpoint are acting up.Both right-buttons have stopped working. If i right click on the desktop, nothing happens - until i left-click... then the context-menu keeps popping up until i click on something else. Eventually both left buttons also stop working. I then have to press ctrl alt del and move the mouse over the on-screen-buttons initially they do not respond. after a while they become active again. Then the left button works for a little while until it starts over again... have tried updating drivers, removing the touchpad and trackpoint,  reinstalling windows 10 and flashing newest BIOS without any improvement. External mouse works flawlessly,,, Suggestions are most appreciated :-) Thanks, Kasper, Denmark

Dear all, I'm having trouble with both my touchpad&trackpoint not working properly. I am not sure whether there's something to do about my hardware or not, but all things started to mess up. I have been experiencing the issue that sometimes my touchpad and trackpoint didn't work. At first I solved it through disabling driver signature enforcement, but later on both the touchpad and trackpoint lost its function after I hibernate/sleep. I have to restart the system and select that advanced boot option again to use them. I don't know the exact time the issue started to deepen, but, I'm guessing that it's about the touchpad firmware update. I installed it someday and after rebooting the program told me that the attempt to update is failed. And after that the touchpad&trackpoint became completely unusable. Both the device can be seen in the device manager but they just lost their functions. I have tried reinstalling the driver and all the installing progress seem to be completed except the firmware updating failure. Here's the log from TrackPointDetect.exe: TouchPad-Flash Utility2018-08-24 23:38:14Command Line: TrackPointDetect.exeOS: 64-bit[WARNING]: WriteCommand 0xF5 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: Retry 1: WriteCommand 0xF5 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: Retry 2: WriteCommand 0xF5 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: WriteCommand 0xE8 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: Retry 1: WriteCommand 0xE8 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: Retry 2: WriteComman... Hello... I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W500, purchased some years ago. It was running Windows 7 Pro. Any discs that might have come with it are long lost. I made the disastrous decision to upgrade to Windows 10. To do this, I used "Create Windows 10 installation media" from this this link. I put it on a USB flash drive, configured my W500 BIOS to load from "USB HDD" first, and proceeded.  After several attempts, it finally managed to load what appears to be Windows 10 (clean install w/o Product Key, for now) to the point where I gave it my Micosoft ID and it even loaded the correct wallpaper photo, etc, and there was a Taskbar which briefly appeared before hiding. But after that, nothing... integrated mouse touchpad unresponsive (in fact, no arrow pointer on screen at all).  I know the mouse pad is working, because if I insert the "W10 installation media" flash drive, I can select "Repair PC" instead of "Install W10" can then get a command prompt (with a arrow pointer that moves around). But none of the other options seem to work (it detects none of my W7 recovery partitions, W7 Restore points... nothing. Startup repair reports back nothing. I don't think I am eligible for Lenovo Recovery Media, as the eligibility page does not recognize my Thinkpad S/N. At this point, I'd be happy to just re-install W7 (I have a valid Product Key), but I can't even "Submit digital download recovery order" since Lenovo won't recognize my S/N. Hello,I have an issue whith my new X1 Carbon (G7), that my touchpad does not react immediately when I click with the phisical touchpad buttons (ie. the buttons above the touchpad). It is noticable when trying to drag&drop an item, or when trying to use the scrollbar similarly (clicking and dragging). It works well when I use the lower area of the touchpad to "click". For example: I select a file in File Explorer with a click and immediately move my fingers on the touchpad to drag it somewhere else, but it only starts to move after a short moment. It feels like the touchpad does not want to react, but then it suddenly starts to work... I thought of driver update, but Synaptics driver is not available. Maybe it's an issue with the Microsoft drivers?Does anyone else have a similar issue? Thanks

I bought a used W530 with 24 gigs ram, i7 cpu.  I've installed all the latest drivers on lenovo's support.  Everything seems to work great except the touchpad (touchpad did the same thing before I updated anything).  When sliding my finger across sometimes it just stops and the cursor won't move again until I firmly tap twice, almost like the cursor is frozen in place and the taps wake it up.  Other times the cursor will jump to the other side of the screen when scrolling.  Sometimes it clicks with the slightest touch, and other times I have to firmly tap. I've read most of the issues on this forum but they don't sound like this problem.  This feels like a flakey touchpad.  I see on ebay you can get the touchpad sticker/cover, the entire palmrest with ribbon cables, or the touchpad sensor board.  If I can't fix the issue with software, is the problem most likely the palmrest piece or the sensor board?  I'm assuming the sensor board is what the palmrest plugs into somewhere by the motherboard, but I'm not sure as I haven't torn into it yet and the maintenance manual doesn't show that sensor board. I'm going to attempt disabling the trackpoint in the driver as I just found that suggestion on the forum and see if that fixes the touchpad.  If that solves the problem, is there a hardware fix for the trackpoint or is that just getting a replacement keyboard?  I doubt that will be the issue since the trackpoint and all... Right now when I use the trackpoint the touchpad is disabled while moving the cursor. The touchpad is also disabled when the trackpoint recalibrates itself. This causes problems because I often let go of the trackpoint to do gestures on the touchpad, and sometimes I then have to wait for the trackpoint to recalibrate until I can do anything. Recalibration can take several seconds so sometimes it's really frustrating.  Is my trackpoint working as it should or am I the only one experiencing recalibration for more than 2 seconds? Is there a known way to enable touchpad and trackpoint at the same time on Windows 10? That would solve my problem since I don't care about the drifting, I just want to be able to use the touchpad while it recalibrates.

So, i'm fairly confident that my touchpad/trackpoint is 'bricked' on my X1 Carbon 3rd gen. I don't know what have triggered it but i haven't been able to make any progress in getting it to work in the last 5 hours. 1. There is no response on the trackpointer, the touchpad or its buttons2. Bios is newest version N14ET51W (1.29) and i've done a Reset Default Settings5. Both trackpoint and touchpad is enabled in the BIOS6. Running hardware scans using Lenovo Solution Center doesn't yield any errors7. Using TouchPad-Flash Utility - TrackPointDetect yields 20 warnings and 2 errors.8. I've dissambled my laptop touchpad and keyboard connectors and making sure they are firmly connected.9. Is there something i have missed? Anyways. I've made peace with having to replace some parts - nothing lasts forever and i've had my laptop for 4 years now. The million dollar question is though; what to replace?Without knowing the inner workings of the X1 Carbon i can't get my head around how the touchpad an keyboard interacts. On other models its a single component and you replace both keyboard and touchpad together. Do i need to do that on X1 Carbon as well even though its two seperate components?

I found a replacement part for the whole top cover, keyboard and touchpad. Is this the replacement you would all recommend?

Hey! I'm quite happy with my new P1 2nd Gen, except the pointing devices suck. Lenovo seems to have switched the TrackPoint to ALPS which comes very stiff, choppy and inaccurate. I played around with udev rules and acceleration settings which made it a bit better, but it is still far from the awesome accuracy and smoothness of the W540, my last machine. Same with the three buttons on top of the TrackPad - especially the left one doesn't react reliably when hit on the lower right corner. I have to press a second time every ten clicks or so. This definitely sucks, so my question is: Is anyone aware of other manufacturers/options of especially TrackPoints and TouchPad-buttons for the P1 apart from ALPS? BestMarkus

since i've gotten my x201 i've been pretty happy with it. the only problem i've had with it is scrolling. on some applications such as itunes and AIM the program doesn't scroll. i've read a few entries saying that i have to modify the tp4table.dat file and it does work.my question is why is this necessary when other laptops don't need to do this. is this because synaptics drivers do not support scrolling in those applications yet? also how often does lenovo release new drivers to update support for more programs

A:scrolling problem with touchpad/trackpoint

Hello keviinf, modify the tp4table.dat file is the one way, updating the ultra nav drivers could help also. Please reboot your system after editing the tp4table.dat file.Otherwise it won´t work.I did some tweaks on my both systems too. Like enabling horizontal scrolling in Firefox.

GreetingsFirst time posting seeing if anyone else is having issues with the X1 Carbon trackpoint/touchpad freezing up on Windows 8.For me it is freezing up every 20min while I am using it, and also when I unplug the AC power. The mouse will freeze up but the keyboard works fine. Usually I am forced to reboot.A USB mouse will work fine during this freeze. I have tried installing all windows updates, Lenovo updates and even system recovery to a date when I didn't have issues but nothing seems to work. Anyone else have this issue? Its been very frustrating owning this x1, as I am on my second one after the first one died on me.

Hi, changuri

I would recommend trying to install the Synaptics base driver and see if that helps your issues. Synaptics is the company that produces the UltraNav driver for Lenovo, so there should not be any loss of functionality, but it tends to fix issues like this in my experience. This driver can be found here. Try downloading and installing that and see if it helps.

Best of luck,
Adam

Hi all Can anyone help me diagnose a problem I'm having with a friends T410. The trackpoint and touchpad buttons have stopped working (both left and right click). I am forced to use the laptop with an external mouse. The trackpad and touchpoint themselves both work just can't click anything, I have tried uninstalling drivers and re-installing but that hasn't helped, have also run Hirens boot cd - Mini XP mode and the buttons don't work there either. Sounds like a hardware issue to me but would like a second opinion before I start pulling it apart! Many thanks Chris

A:Touchpad and Trackpoint buttons not working

Hi whitehouse87,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you again.

As I understand that you are facing issue with Touchpad & Trackpoint buttons are not working in T410.
You have tried almost everything & I don't think so its related to software or drivers. You can check without drivers once whether clicks are working or not. Else its a hardware issue for sure

I hope the above information helped you.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!
