W530 fan compatibility/replacement

Q: W530 fan compatibility/replacement

Dear community! The fan on my Thinkpad W530 (2447) died and I am in dire need of replacement. I already took out the entire fan+ heatsink and cleaned it as well as replaced the thermal paste, but it didn't help.Unfortunately, the shops I have contacted so far do not offer an exact replacement and one of them said, that the exact fan is even flagged as "end of life". My question is: Are fans of slightly different models (W500, W520 for example) compatible with my W530? Which fans can I safely replace mine with? Thank you in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Guys, I have a 04X1505 in my W530. I recently attempted to upgrade my W530 with an Intel Ultimate-N 6300 (FRU 60Y3233), which according to the W530 FRU BOM V2 document should be compatible. Upon attempting to boot, I get a bios error:1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI network card (8086/422B/8086/1101). I believe my BIOS was just recently updated to the most recent.  Has anyone had this experience? Do you have a workaround? Thanks in advance.

A:W530 compatibility with 60Y3233

Welcome to the CommunityYou have Intel 6300 card but it's branded for HP/Compaq laptops. Its PCI IDs differ from the ones that W530' BIOS whitelist has for Lenovo branded 6300 card:PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4238&SUBSYS_11118086As you mention your card has Lenovo service p/n (FRU) 60Y3233 instead of HP's p/n SPS 572511, I'd assume the card is a fake, with label replaced.

Hey guys, I purchased a W530 back in 2013 and it's served me VERY well over the years. The AC Adapter finally squeaked it's last today (constantly does quick squeaking noise when plugged in and it won't charge my laptop anymore). So I go into the store to find a replacement and I can't seem to find a 170w that's compatible with my w530, they all have this rectuangular connector compared to my round one. That can't be right, right? Or is my laptop just too old now? I JUST bought a new battery for it and I don't want to give up on this litlte beast that could. Does anyone have a reco as to where I might be able to purchase a compatible AC adapter fo this, brand new?

Hi Lenovo Community, I have a W530 and recently purchased a Lenovo 70+ 6 cell battery (FRU 45N1001 ASM 42N1001, 11S45N175048Z00068K2HV KC 2017.12.01) from eBay.  I fitted the battery and when I power up the system with the battery installed I get the following message "The battery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge.  Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system.  Press the ESC key to continue." Q1. I thought that the 70+ and 70++ (9 cell) were the correct battery options for the W530--what did I miss? Q2. Ultimately I can charge this battery in the W510 I have and so is it possible to change something in the BIOS such that the system will power up without needing the ESC key to be pressed each time? Pete

Hi, I'm trying to replace the power jack in my W530 and I've run into a little problem-- I can't actually get the power jack out of the housing. I've disassembled the laptop to the point where I can replace it, but I can't actually get the jack itself out, it seems to be glued in to the extreme. Does snyone have any tips on how to get the power jack out? I already have the replacement part ready to go. Thanks in advance.

My  Notebook 15-ac151dx (product #: T0D84UA)  needs to have its DC-in power connector replaced. Using the HP PartSurfer website I came across P/N 813945-001 listed as the "DC-in power connector board" for my laptop model number. Hello all, Yesterday my girlfriend accidentally spilt juice on her laptop. Needless to say, it's toast. It won't turn on or anything so I'm thinking the mobo is fried. The laptop is the Acer Aspire R14 (R5471T-51UN). Because we are both on extremely limited incomes, I am considering purchasing a replacement motherboard for it and attempting the repair myself.Unfortunately it is nearly impossible to locate a replacement motherboard easily. But I did manage to find one website http://www.impactcomputers.com that has a board advertised as"NB.G7W11.00P - MAINBOARD R5-471T I5, R5-471T-52EE For Aspire R5-471T-52EE / R5-471T-52EE Notebook" It's the closest thing I can find and looks a lot like the one in the laptop. Can anyone confirm or comment/recommend me anything? Thank you all so very much.

I broke my T460s' QHD non-touch screen (grabbed the laptop by the bezel and cracked the screen, this was never a problem on my older Thinkpads :/), and shopping for a replacement is actually a little tricky. On the back of the screen, I see:VVX14T058J0216023TP/N SD10G56715FRU 00NY406 I went to the pcsupport.lenovo.com website to look for the replacement part numbers, and it says 00NY406 and 00HN877 in the list. However there's a little dropdown on 00NY406 that says "Substitutes (2)", and shows 00HN878 and 00NY413 as well. This is the tricky part: I see in the pictures for the 00HN878, and the stickers actually say 00HM878, and VVX14T058J0016042T. Are all 40 pin connector screens with the same mounting holes compatible? When searching ebay or Amazon or aliexpress the sellers seem to suggest any of the 40 pin connector screens are cross compatible. I'm a little hesitant to buy a screen that I'm not 100% sure will fit. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi,

I am planning on buying a portable wall charger/powerbank and I just want to make sure it won't reduce my phone's battery life in the long run. The phone I have is a BLU Energy XL, which came with a 9V/2A charger that plugs into the wall. However, the powerbank that I am most interested in provides 5V/4.8 or 5V/3.0A (or Qualcomm 3.0, which I am actually not sure about the tech specs) and most powerbanks in general I believe provide something like 5V maximum from USB type ports. In looking up some articles, I discovered that one should try to match the voltage of a replacement power supply (in this case, analogous to my powerbank) to the original power supply because otherwise this may impact the battery's lifetime. Is that true?

In general for my knowledge, how does one convert between something like 9V/2A and 5V/3A in terms of the impact it has on a battery? I can kind of conceptually understand the impact that current has in that it really sets an upper limit for the Amps that a power supply can find and the higher the amps for a given voltage, the faster a device will charge. Not really sure about the impact of voltage? Can one just compare the power of the different chargers like 9*2= 16 watts vs 5*3=15 watts?

Thanks in advance!!

Hello,

I recently had issues with my PSU and rather than play guesswork on whether its still functional, I rather just replace it.

My motherboard is a m3n78-pro. Its a bit dated but I'd like for this pc to last another 6 months before I build an entirely new rig. If I read the manual correctly, it requires ATX 12V V2.0.

The PSU I'd like to change to (since it just has to last another 6 months) this 900 w PSU. Would the m3n78-pro be compatible with this PSU? One concern I had was that the m3n78-pro requires a 4 pin ATX +12v connector. If I read the PSU's specifications correctly it has one 12V 8-pin (4 + 4) CPU power connector. Is that 8-pin two separate power connector, ie do I just use 1 of the connectors to fit into the 4 pin ATX +12v connector?

Please excuse my noobishness but what exactly does the v2.92 Motherboard specification entail? I tried to google it, but got less useful information and product results from newegg.

Also I read the wiki on the ATX 12V V2.X standard, but it didn't answer my question - is ATX12V v2.3 backwards compatible with the ATX12V v2.0 standard?
Thank you very much for any help you can give.

(Just posting this here so people in the future can find it.) I replaced my motherboard and just wanted to leave this here for future reference to some poor soul who has to do the same.
If you replace the motherboard on your Dell Studio XPS 8000, (service tag 3L8DHK1) and you need a new motherboard you can use an INTEL DQ57TM, it's compatible and I did a successful transplant. Your processor is an INTEL Core-i5 750 CPU 2.67GHZ it uses a SOCKET LGA1156. It uses DDR3 memory.
Once you take out your old motherboard and disconnect all those usb and audio wires and the power button wires. To hook up your USB front jacks, audio jacks etc.... here's which blocks go where:
Wires from the audio jacks and usb ports go into these colored block connectors, and those connectors get plugged into those little rows of pins/jumpers called Internal Headers. Every motherboard manual tells you about them. Grab the manual for your new motherboard and it'll tell you where your audio1, usb1, usb2, usb3, usb4 Header connectors are they look like 2 rows and 5 collumns of short little pins. (They almost always have 1 or 2 pins missing on purpose.)
the wires leading to a YELLOW BLOCK gets plugged into the audio1 header on your new motherboard, it's for audio jacks on top of the computer
wires with the WHITE BLOCK gets plugged into the usb3 headers on your motherboard (they are for the usb jacks on the very top of the computer tower)
wires with the GREEN BLOCK gets plugged into ... Read more

We do not see that brand of SSD over here in the US but as it is a 2.5 inch wide 7 mm thick SATA SSD it is virtually certain to work.  Yes you can install 16 gigs of RAM.  Service Manual DDR3-1600-MHz dual channel support Supports up to 16384-MB system RAM Memory modules (2, PC3, 12800, 1600-MHz): 8-GB memory module 670034-001 https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-PC3-12800-Notebooks-KTH-X3C-8G/dp/B0089MTP0W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1487796713&sr=8-2&keywords=670034-001 This is DDR3-1600 1.5 volt memory. The Kingston linked above will work.  Here is a link to the SATA cable and caddy for your laptop to use in the second bay: https://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_5&products_id=579&zenid=460053086b75bf15cd31e58e026a8e7d These are specific items and need to be designed for your specific model as there are mounting flanges and attachment  points that have to engage to hold the drive from moving inside the laptop.  I sense you are not in the US. Purchasing an aarm64 mobile device (moto z2 force) in place of a developer ws has been a disaster, and as I have accumulated around 100 usd or would be wiling to trafe the moto z2 force with 3 mods: turbo, gamepad, 360 cam, pelican box, daydream vr, type-c to eth/hdmi/usb adapters are there any readers with this beautiful old monster lying around who might consider sell/trade?     p.s ebay is horrible, and even goodwill is stripping these comps to sell individual parts for way more than should.      thanks for your time, sincerely                      a trash patched kid.

Trying to determine the max resolution i can go for on a W530 with the NVidia Quadro K2000M card.  This site: https://www.thinkscopes.com/2012/12/27/thinkpad-w530-lcd-support-on-nvidia-quadro-k2000m-2100m/ lists max as 3840x2160 yet later I see in descrete mode using mini display port connector as 3840x1200. My goal is to leave the laptop in descrete mode and have 2 moinitors plus the laptop monitor going. Not sure if I can go with a 3840x2160 with this and have anohter external monitor.  The page is a little confusing and I dont want to end up with a nice montitor I cannot use.Any help would be appreciated.

OK. W530 user here obviously. My first W530 I bought about a year ago and it came with the older USB2 dock with eSata. This dock has been mostly ok for my needs (the sound noisy unfortunately) but I am considering just grabbing the USB3 dock. So a weird thing happened and my first W530 died after updating a BIOS setting. It gave an error on writing the bios settings to NVRAM and refused to ever boot again. I spent a few days trying everything. I liked the laptop so much I just decided I would replace the board or buy another. Long story short I ended up with a working replacement that is a newer revision and was built in 2013 with a slightly better CPU. It came with the 170 watt power supply, but I my dock only takes the 135 watt unit. I'm thinking that the newer USB3 dock takes the beefier supply? It would seem so. I haven't had any real issues with this machine other than twice my cat has tapped it with her head and the static discharge froze the nvidia GPU. Very odd. I also had some instability but then again I did have the K2000 overclocked and running pretty hot. It seems to take some abuse though. I did repaste the heat sinks and made sure that everything was pretty well and tight. Temps at full load on both the GPU and CPU are around 90-95C which is in the upper limit, but at the same time nothing is throttling. At stock clocks temps max around 80C or so. Not bad really. Lenovo did a decent job with the thermal design. So I've been trying to get better battery life out ... Read more

Over the past couple months my W530 has been shutting off by itself.  At first, the problem seemed to happen every few hours of use. I could turn the laptop back on immediately after shutdown and it would continue to operate normally for a few hours until it would shut off again. Then, the laptop began to shutoff more frequently until it was to the point where it would shutoff two second after I turned it on (the green light on the power button would light up for a couple seconds and then power off).  I have taken it to several repair shops (one local third party shop and one Lenovo service provider here in HCMC, Vietnam) and neither of them found anything wrong with the laptop. But both times after I took the laptop to the shops, the computer began to display the same problem within a few days after gettign the laptop back from repair. For whatever reason, this problem doesn't seem to occur while the laptop is at the repair shop. One idea I do have is that the problem seems to occur after some extended periods of use... When I took my laptop to the shop the last time it had been off for probably 3 weeks... and then seemed to operate fine while they were searching for problems. When I got the laptop back, I used it frequently for about 3 days with no issues until suddenly the same problem occured (laptop shut off by itself, can't turn back on for more like a few minutes before another shutoff). However, if I leave it off for about 2-3 days,  I can get... Read more

It's hard to know without seeing it, but my guess is that the fan runs slowly when it's hot.  The fan speed is tested at startup (when it is cold)  I would try replacing the fan.

Dear All, I am just configuring my Lenovo W530 now. I am definetely wanting to upgrade to SSD. However, I am unsure whether to configure it with a 128 ssd or an HDD to start with. When I talked to a few other people,  I was told that getting the HDD at SATA 3.0 Gb/s would make a faster SSD (say Samsung 830 or Vertex 4) run at a rate lower then its maxium capacity because the adaptors would not allow it.  Thus, I was going to get the 128gb SSD put in to start and upgrade the size to a 512 Samsung to get max speeds. Is this the right thing to do? Or should I save the money and just get the HDD. Would appreciate any help. Thank You

A:SSD Advice W530

Hi jcyanksceo,

Thank your for your post and welcome to the commnuity. Choosing between HDD and SSD can be very tricky. I believe this all bils down to what you're really comfortable with really. Personally I do not have nor have I tested the SSD, simply because of the size it offers. Though I i do believe gradually the size will grow further and if i the size of the SSD fits the amount i need I'll definetly get one :-D.

However in regards to your question, as compared to the HDD to the SSD, based on the number of people i've spoken with alot of them prefer to have the SSD installed on their machine. Some even have an SSD and a HDD running side by side. A friend of mine has one installed on his machine and based on his review, he recommends it highly   because of these reason as he put puts it,

Faster boot up timeLoads within 30sec

Faster File SearchesSearches files 5X faster than the usual HDD

Faster file transfer timeAccording to my friend, Huge files seem to transfer 10 minutes faster than his old Hdd

Faster Application Loading

Increase performance in applicationAccording to him when he ran the Anti Virus, it didn't lag his machine and scanning was a breeze.

Reduce Power Consumption

Faster Video-Editing rendering

Light and portableDoes not put additionl weight to the machine.

I know This is not much information but I am basing this on my friend experience rath... Read more

Hello,  Does Lenovo have a car charger for a Thinkpad w530 or an adpater that could be used as such? My normal adapter says 20V / 170W / 8.5A. I did see some 20V / 4.5 car chargers at Amazon, but I am not sure what the effect is of a lower amperage. Will it just work, but charge slower, or will it not work at all or will it possible even break the laptop? It's been a while since I took physics classes... Anyway, a car charger from Lenovo that was built for my laptop would be best.

A:Car charger for W530?

If you really mean "charger", the answer is yes. The battery will charge slowly with the 90W combination (car and A/C) adapter if the laptop is turned off.  The W530 will not run at all when hooked to the 90w. I suggest a real Lenovo adapter, rather than aftermarket, so the resistance is correct on the signal pin, (used to identify wattage) although some generics may be OK.

Hi, I have a newly purchased refurbished W530 with a Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD, 219 GB. It's the only drive in the machine other than the optical drive. I'd like to upgrade to a larger SSD data drive. Can anyone explain my options here? I take it that there is one internal bay, occupied by the current SSD, plus the "ultrabay", currently occupied by the optical drive, yes? So my choices are: 1. Swap out the current SSD for a larger one2. Swap out the optical drive for a larger SSD in some sort of adaptor caddy (and use an external optical drive if I want/need one)3. Use an external SDD (presumably USB 3?) Can anyone comment on these options and make any recommendations? The machine will be used for recording and mixing audio, including high quality multitracks of live shows. Thanks for your time and help.

Hi, was wondering if anyone can help me, I have a ThinkPad W530 which hasn't had any problems other than a hard drive fail. The other day I tried booting it up and it just kept rebooting, sometimes it would get to the windows logo, others it wouldn't even get that far. I removed the hard disk and I can get into the bios, diagnostics menu (every passes). I've tried booting from usb boot the same thing happens, I did manage to get into  safe mode once and boot to a Linux usb, but I haven't managed to do that again. I tried resetting the bios, drained capacitor and even reset the internal battery. Nothing seems to work and can't find anything similar to help. No error messages seen either or they are just to quick to be seen.  Am out of ideas, has anyone had anything similar? Running Windows 7 if that helps Thanks

Well, Monday was Upgrade Day and it's a good thing that I alloted most of the day for it.  I started the upgrade and after the first reboot, blank screen and no response from the laptop, shutdown and started over, same thing.  Then it came to me that I hadn't removed the video drivers which were not compatible with Win 10.  Went in to UEFI/BIOS and selected Integraded Graphics and the install then worked fine. Reactivated Discrete Graphics and installed Nvidia Drivers. Now Windows 10 Enterprise is working moderately well but I have some irratating issues that maybe you guys know a solution. 1. Power Management - Since Win 10 removed the power manager, how do I set the battery to charge only below a certain level (ie. 75%)?2. The Wireless light keeps coming on and the network connection is turned off.  No Fn F5 anymore to turn the radios on or off?3. No onscreen display of Thinklight/Backlit Keyboard? Other keys appear as normal, ie. Caps Lock/Unlock? I'm generally happy with the transitition and was already familiar with win10 (used it as a VM)  The only other issue was Office 2016 and click to run, didn't like that at all and figured a work around to install it. TIA

Hey everyone, I've had my W530 for 3 years now and its worked flawlessly. However a few weeks ago it began to just shut-down randomly, and the time between shut-downs would decrease up until the point that I couldn't start the laptop because it would shut down after 2 seconds after the power button was pressed. I took out my battery and directly used the AC adapter once the problem began. When I could make it to BIOS the laptop would not shut off and could stay on for a long time. At the beginning when the problem began I did install a temp. monitor and nothing looked abnormal, and the temp. never went over 90 deg C so I know it is not a heat issue. Also, safe mode worked and I could access windows. I ended up recovering the hard drive and factory resetting it. It worked!...... but the symptoms started coming back the next time I booted the laptop, and slowly the shut downs would happen more and more often until it was unusable. So I thought the hard drive had something to do with it, so I swapped the original hard drive with a Seagate one I had laying around and installed the factory default image on it. Again it worked for the first day, and then after I shut it down once and move it somewhere else it begins to show the symptoms again, even if I move it back to the original place. Does anyone have any advice how I can go about fixing this? I've read some random comments on forums that these thinkpads are plagued with a voltage regulator or electrost... Read more

Hello everyone, There seems to be a lot of posts regarding W10 and Thinkpads and most of them appear to negatively speak of the impact of switching from either W7 or W8.1 to W10. That being said, there is a lack of data regarding how some people have made the upgrade/switch and how that impacts their experience of the OS. So, my question is simple: If doing a clean install (USB boot) and not an upgrade, would W10 bring something new to the table compared to say W8.1 (currently running on my W530)? It appears to be that some people are doing the W7, install all updates and service packs, and then upgrade to W10 as a way of doing a "clean install" that seems to solve some issues with drivers. Also, it appears to be that some download drivers directly from Lenovo for their respective machines/hardware, taking those to a USB stick BEFORE doing a clean install and after the clean install of W10, they install all drivers they downloaded to make things like WiFi or BT work. I always believed a clean isntall was best, but it appears to be that Lenovo has yet to cover essentials when it comes to legacy systems and the drivers needed. Another thing that I am concerned is that I would probably want to download W10 and make a bootable USB (as I have W8.1) as a back up for future installs in case my mSATA fails and I need to restart from scratch to have a working machine (happened once with a previous T400 I had and having the CD for W7 helps a lot) Howe...
