CDRom/DVD and CDRom-RW conflict

Q: CDRom/DVD and CDRom-RW conflict

I recently received a hand-me-down pc with a CDRom/DVD which worked fine. It runs on Windows 2000 sp4. I installed a CDRom-RW from my older computer and since then have not been able to read cds. The computers registers that they exists, states that the correct drivers are installed but when I put in a cd rom and click on the icon, I get the message: "The disk in drive E: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" Both drives, (E and F), give the same message with their respective drive letters no matter kind of CD in input.
The drives are installed master and slave correctly. Both drives will play music cds just fine.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Welcome to TSG!!

Was it like this from the repair shop? If so, return to them with a request for a fully functioning machine, as you were expecting one after paying them for their services.

If this came about since then, let us know. There are various things to try. (One might be to pop open the case and be sure the cable(s) didn't fall off in transport.) Can you see it in BIOS?

I recently purchased a Vivitar DSC350 camera from a local walmart store. I installed the Arcsoft Photoimpression Application software on my computer.
However when I try to install the camera driver as per the instructions for Windows 98 Second Edition I get the following error message.
"Device conflict detected with your Adaptec CDROM Software. The installation will be terminated. Please go to Adaptec Website at (http://askroxio.com) and update the latest CDROM Software before installing this camera."
I went to the roxio website and found that I cannot recieve tech support from them as I recieved their software in a bundle package with a CD Rewriter. They suggested I contact the camera manufacture.
Can you help me with this. I tried downloading the driver on the website but was unable to open the file. I'm not sure why this didn't work.
On step 5 in the instruction booklet for the camera it says to open setup.exe file and my file only says setup. It is in the same position however. Could this be the problem? If so how do I correct it?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi - welcome to TSG.

Download WinZip if you donít have a zip program on your computer: http://download.com.com/3000-2250-8132587.html?tag=pop The evaluation lasts forever. Iím guessing the download might be zipped without a self extractor.

You likely just donít have your computer set to display known file extensions. The setup file is the right one if it attempts the setup.

I have a sony Vaio VGN-SZ32CP dual core laptop running win 7 ultimate 32 bit.
In "computer" only my hard drive shows up, not my optical drive.
All drivers seem to be installed but i notice that in dev mgr the first ATA channel, channel 0, likely the hard drive, is mentioned twice. Channel 1,
which is likely the cdrom, only shows up once.
I notice that when a cd is in the drive it spins up for a while and then stops, which would be normal i think.
Can anyone help me with this?

I HAVE AN HP, ABOUT 2 YRS OLD AND WHEN I PUT IN A CD I TRY TO OPEN IT BUT AN ERROR COMES UP AND TELLS ME THAT IT CAN ACCESS THE CDROM AN D THE DRIVE IS NOT READY..HOW DO I FIX..THANX

A:Cdrom

The drive could need cleaning, it may have failed, or a cable may be loose or disconnected inside the case. Did you move the pc lately? It's obviously getting power since you can insert a cd, but that doesn't mean the drive hasn't failed.

First thing I would try is cleaning the CD. You can use a regular CD cleaner if you have one or can get one. If cleaning it several times doesn't help, open the case and check the cable connections to the drive and motherboard. If the connections are good, try finding another drive that you can try in your machine.

Hi:

I've had experiences with a number of BTC CD_ROM drives of variable speeds. These relatively inexpensive drives manufactured by Behavior Tech Computer Corp. are not the world's most reliable. I've heard them squeek, sputter, gasp, wheeze, and groan on numerous occasions in quite a few systems that I've repaired. Your best bet is to junk that clunker and purchase either a new and different CD-ROM drive from another manufacturer or get yourself an up-to-date DVD or CD/RW drive made by a reputable company with a solid history of reliance. I'm not going to suggest a manufacturer, but if you do a little online investigation, you'll come up with your own choice. Good luck.

I have set the jumper pins and connected cable but when I startup I get a clicking noise and computer wont finish startup.

Do I have to change any settings in bios?

A:2nd cdrom

bios settings shouldn't cause the computer to lock as you describe, but who knows.

I would suspect the cable, either bad or connected backwards, the red stripe on cable must go to pin 1.

Also double check that the jumpers are not set the same as the other device, only one master and one slave per cable

Also whatever ide channel you are adding the drive to should be set to auto or cdrom in the bios.

I brought a Dell Vostro 1510 with Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-7640A ATA Device slot load on it last year and everything was working fine until 2 days ago when I was trying to burn a Data DVD and suddenly the program stopped responding. I thereafter closed the program using task manager. But to my dismay, the hitherto DVD RW+ does not recognise DVDs anymore and it only recognises CDs. Any time a slot in a DVD Disk, it eject it and ask me to insert a Disk into the drive, this it dosent do with a CD.

I have tried to download the driver so as to reinstall it but its been difficult. I am afraid of uninstalling the driveras the driver DVD that came with the laptop is no longer recognised by the DVD RW device. pls advise me on what to do

I hope it is not a Hardware problem..., pls, if it is, is it possible to change this slot load DVD RW device.

Before I registered a user name I did make sure to read most of the information pertaining to this problem...but it just doesn't have the same scenario as mine...I'm pretty sure.

Okay the specs.
I'm running an HP 233MHz MMX, 128Mb RAM, 8Gb (hey never needed that much space anyways...) Maxtor IDE Hard-drive, with a standard floppy on WINDOWS ME. It's running on an Asus TX97-XV motherboard with a basic OEM 56k modem with a little doodlely card thing where you plug in the speakers and whatever...I'm not sure if it's sound card or not.

But anyways, the problem: GOLDSTAR CD-ROM model CRD-8240B which I believe is a 48x. It doesn't show up in MY COMPUTER.

But prior to the problem was another problem, which was resolved and in the process probably created the CD-ROM problem; MS-DOS compatibility mode paging blah blah blah...performace will be reduced or something like that, was the problem prior, but as I said it's solved now.

Okay but during that time I remembering entering the BIOS, which probably started the whole problem, and selecting something like "Restore to default". Oh by the way it's an outdated Phoenix BIOS version 4.XXXX.

Could that have caused the problem?

I'm certain the CD-ROM isn't broken because it was working hours prior to the MS-DOS problem.

Also, it is NOT a cable problem nor is it a power problem, but ideas of that were quickly dispatched when I switched both the cables and the power ca... Read more

A:CDROM not responding...at all

First off, stick with the problem at hand...the CD-ROM!

Did this CD-ROM ever work correctly?

Put the jumper on the CD-ROM to master, connect the ribbon cable with the red strip connected to the side with the power connector and in line with pin 1 (if it's backwards your PC probably won't even boot). Connect the molex power connector and seat it snugly. Turn on the power. If the CD-ROM is working at all you should be able to press the eject button and open the tray, if not I would suspect it is fried. If it won't eject, disconnect the ribbon cable and power on again and retry the eject. If it still doesn't get a paper clip and there should be a small hole in front of the CD-ROM(not the headphone jack). Un-bend it and place it in the hole and push...this should eject the CD. If it powers up and ejects we can go from there.

I'm trying to decide whether to go SCSI or IDE for CDROM read/write. I know that with SCSI, you can copy the CDROMs while you work on the computer. The SCSI, or course, is quite a bit more expensive.

What do you all have and use and what's your thought on the subject?

Pros/Cons.

A:SCSI or IDE for CDROM?

I can copy CD's and listen to music and do whatever while burning CD's on an IDE controller. It really depends on your setup and how the files are written to the hard drive prior to burning them to CD. It also depends on which comtroller your burner and CD-ROM's are connected to while performing these operations. If your drives support DMA or Ultra DMA transfers and it is enabled in the BIOS by all means use it. SCSI really won't do you any good if you are still trying to use IDE hard drives and CD-RW's. There was a great FAQ I will have to find for you.

normally when i install certain games it does the starforce protection thingy but it doesnt do that anymore. in device manager under cdrom tab it says current 1 which is USA and im in region 2 which is UK. would this affect it? it doesnt allow me to change it though.

ive been on cd-rom drivers.com and looked under "lite-on" company drivers but mine doesnt seem tho be there. there is one listed as "all driver" but it seems to be a program and not a driver.

About a month ago we purchased a new cdrom drive and inserted it. At first the system did not recognise it but after another re connection it worked ok. It has now ceased altogether. The drive light pulses once at start up then goes out. The drive does not open and windows does not recognise it anywhere, (its no longer in device manager). I have read up other similar postings but it is not the jumpers as we have tried them all in turn . The shop we purchased it at tested it and it worked for them so its not the drive itself. We have also experienced intermittent power up problems which ceased when we tried another of the leads we have available. It has also worked twice without the external case on the pc but lost it again once all fixed together again. We are not a very technical family so are not happy with the idea of doing any more wire experiments. I saw the hints about Bios exploration but am not too happy about trying that either. It really looks like a power supply problem to me but I would be grateful for any suggestions.

I have an odd problem, everything seems fine on my Vista 64 setup, and was working great for a while, but I recently noticed that both my CD-RW and DVD drive are no longer recognized by Vista. They work fine upon startup, e.g. I can boot off the Vista DVD, etc. But Vista itself does not recognize them.

When I checked the Properties of the devices, it said that the Driver (c:\Windows\system32\Drivers\cdrom.sys) was corrupt, but no amount of uninstall/reinstall, chkdsk, sfc, or Restore has been able to fix the problem. I also tried the Startup Repair option off the DVD.

Is there some way I can get my drives working again without a complete reinstall? I have an MSI CR52-A2 (CD-RW) and a D16 (DVD-ROM).

i tried turning on my computer and it wouldnt go past the screen where it asks to boot from your cdrom drive so i couldnt get into windows,i decided to check my bios and everything was ok in there exept my secondary master ide slot where my cdrom is located didnt have the cdroms name listed next to it.instead there where these 2 alternating weird looking symbols.one looks like the letter " a " with a coma directly over it and the other looks like a " C " with a realy small " J " attached to the bottom of it. they alternate one then the other all accross the line where my cdroms name should be in the bios.i rearranged my boot sequence so that instead of trying to boot from the cdrom first it trys fo my hard drive and then i could get into windows and my cdrom appears to work fine but im worried this will cause other problems and need to find out how to fix it.ive tried windows system restore and ran an updated virus scan and tried to set my bios back to a previouse setting but its still there.please help, thanks

Hi,
I reformatted my Thinkpad 240 but now can't load from my PCMCIA CDROM which was bought separate.

I dont have any drivers and dont have a clue abut what to do.

I can only boot up from a floppy disk , that's all.
Can anyone let me know which drivers exactly should I download to get my CDROM working please ?

thanks,
didier

A:Pcmcia Cdrom

You need to know the make and model of the CD-ROM in order to dl to correct drivers.
