CDRom/DVD and CDRom-RW conflict

Q: CDRom/DVD and CDRom-RW conflict

I recently received a hand-me-down pc with a CDRom/DVD which worked fine. It runs on Windows 2000 sp4. I installed a CDRom-RW from my older computer and since then have not been able to read cds. The computers registers that they exists, states that the correct drivers are installed but when I put in a cd rom and click on the icon, I get the message: "The disk in drive E: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" Both drives, (E and F), give the same message with their respective drive letters no matter kind of CD in input.
The drives are installed master and slave correctly. Both drives will play music cds just fine.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Welcome to TSG!!

Was it like this from the repair shop? If so, return to them with a request for a fully functioning machine, as you were expecting one after paying them for their services.

If this came about since then, let us know. There are various things to try. (One might be to pop open the case and be sure the cable(s) didn't fall off in transport.) Can you see it in BIOS?

I recently purchased a Vivitar DSC350 camera from a local walmart store. I installed the Arcsoft Photoimpression Application software on my computer.
However when I try to install the camera driver as per the instructions for Windows 98 Second Edition I get the following error message.
"Device conflict detected with your Adaptec CDROM Software. The installation will be terminated. Please go to Adaptec Website at (http://askroxio.com) and update the latest CDROM Software before installing this camera."
I went to the roxio website and found that I cannot recieve tech support from them as I recieved their software in a bundle package with a CD Rewriter. They suggested I contact the camera manufacture.
Can you help me with this. I tried downloading the driver on the website but was unable to open the file. I'm not sure why this didn't work.
On step 5 in the instruction booklet for the camera it says to open setup.exe file and my file only says setup. It is in the same position however. Could this be the problem? If so how do I correct it?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi - welcome to TSG.

Download WinZip if you donít have a zip program on your computer: http://download.com.com/3000-2250-8132587.html?tag=pop The evaluation lasts forever. Iím guessing the download might be zipped without a self extractor.

You likely just donít have your computer set to display known file extensions. The setup file is the right one if it attempts the setup.

There's a free software from Microsoft that might be able to fix that.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

All those software listed are free but you'll want the Tweak UI, it has a "Repair" option to help you fix things that went wrong with your XP.

The drive could need cleaning, it may have failed, or a cable may be loose or disconnected inside the case. Did you move the pc lately? It's obviously getting power since you can insert a cd, but that doesn't mean the drive hasn't failed.

First thing I would try is cleaning the CD. You can use a regular CD cleaner if you have one or can get one. If cleaning it several times doesn't help, open the case and check the cable connections to the drive and motherboard. If the connections are good, try finding another drive that you can try in your machine.

In "computer" only my hard drive shows up, not my optical drive.
All drivers seem to be installed but i notice that in dev mgr the first ATA channel, channel 0, likely the hard drive, is mentioned twice. Channel 1,
which is likely the cdrom, only shows up once.
I notice that when a cd is in the drive it spins up for a while and then stops, which would be normal i think.
Can anyone help me with this?

Hi:

I've had experiences with a number of BTC CD_ROM drives of variable speeds. These relatively inexpensive drives manufactured by Behavior Tech Computer Corp. are not the world's most reliable. I've heard them squeek, sputter, gasp, wheeze, and groan on numerous occasions in quite a few systems that I've repaired. Your best bet is to junk that clunker and purchase either a new and different CD-ROM drive from another manufacturer or get yourself an up-to-date DVD or CD/RW drive made by a reputable company with a solid history of reliance. I'm not going to suggest a manufacturer, but if you do a little online investigation, you'll come up with your own choice. Good luck.

I brought a Dell Vostro 1510 with Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-7640A ATA Device slot load on it last year and everything was working fine until 2 days ago when I was trying to burn a Data DVD and suddenly the program stopped responding. Any time a slot in a DVD Disk, it eject it and ask me to insert a Disk into the drive, this it dosent do with a CD.

I have tried to download the driver so as to reinstall it but its been difficult. I am afraid of uninstalling the driveras the driver DVD that came with the laptop is no longer recognised by the DVD RW device. pls advise me on what to do

bios settings shouldn't cause the computer to lock as you describe, but who knows.

I would suspect the cable, either bad or connected backwards, the red stripe on cable must go to pin 1.

Also double check that the jumpers are not set the same as the other device, only one master and one slave per cable

Also whatever ide channel you are adding the drive to should be set to auto or cdrom in the bios.

A:CDROM on winnt 4.0

autoexec.bat and config.sys are not used by the NT OS, they are only used by the DOS VM for backward compatibility and I believe that the autoexec.nt and config.nt are the files used for that. If the OS recognizes the drive (it is shown in explorer), and cannot access it, it is probably bad. I would try the NEC site for new drivers first (if that is the manufacturer), but if that doesn't work, try another CD drive.

A:Missing CDROM

Hi Looking4trth and welcome to TSF

If I understand your post, you have two burners, one CDRW and a DVDRW. Only one of them is visible in mycomputer with a drive letter.
Did you put the Successfully burned CD or DVD back into the one that you used to burn with and try to view it there, or are you moving it to the other one? I'm thinking the one that said the burn was successful must be working and is the one seen in My computer. If this is true, try this:
Go to the Device Manager and see if they are both listed there and note any yellow or red exclimation points by the cdrom devices. If there is a yellow or red mark, try downloading and installing the newest device drivers for that CD or DVD rom.
If this don't work, post back and we'll try something else.

I have a Royal Laptop with a 266 Mhz MMX Processor and a 3.02 GB Hard-drive. I am trying to reinstall Windows 98. I was having a lot of trouble having my computer to recognize the CDROM drive, but finally added in the commands to the PCMCIA drivers in the Config.sys and it started working.

However, I had to run through Windows 98 setup a couple of times cuz it screwed up sometimes. Now, I am again having different problems with my CDROM. I figured out that I CAN access the CDROM at times. But, about half the time, the CDROM automatically turns off when the bootdisk is loading it, and at other times, I can access it and it goes into Windows Setup and then the CDROM automatically turns off and the computer hangs (freezes). Then I have to turn the computer off and on again. Anyone have an idea why the CDROM is doing this?

Also, how can I start the setup in DOS. For example, when I go the D:\ directory (when the CDROM actually works properly,) and type setup, it first says "initializing setup," but then says something about the largest executable program required for Windows setup requiring 462 kb or something. Currently I can only run setup using the bootdisk and selecting the "Load CDROM drivers and Run Windows 98 Setup," option.

Can I run setup by copying the files from the CD on to the C:\ drive?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

A:CDROM screwing up!

The memory problem is because you are loading the PCMCIA drivers and CDROM drivers. They are eating away at your lower 640K, so windows can't run setup.

The solution is what you guessed - copying the files to the C drive.

So, boot from the floppy and make sure the CD is working, then change to the C drive and make a directory called WIN98 then copy the WIN98 files from the CD.

MD WIN98
CD WIN98
copy d:\win98

Now you need to boot from the C drive (not the floppy) to avoid loading all those drivers, do a CD\WIN98 and type setup.

I'm having problems with my CD... it takes ages to read and it stops some programs when they're runned from the CD.
What can it be and how eventually can I check the problem?
thanks

A:CDrom problems

is this a 'home made' CD? Sometimes some CDROM's have difficulty in recognizing these types of CD's. Try it on another CDROM and see if you have the same problem.
