Icons not in alpha order

Q: Icons not in alpha order

When I sort my desktop icons by name, the list starts over with the 'A's about half way through the 2nd column. OK the system files at first, but I want the rest of my icons in one A-Z list.

Thanks, Randy

Preferred Solution: Icons not in alpha order

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Icons not in alpha order

They are arranged into 3 groups. First the non-file icons, then the icons common to all users, and finally the icons of the current user.

Hi, Gang:

Is there a way to sort ALL desktop icons in strict alpha order--including My Computer, My Documents, Recycle Bin, etc.

If not, is there a way to just place those programs whose icons now go up front (such as Norton 2005 and SnagIt) in alpha order--just leaving MS system icons at the front?

Recently I used REGSEEKER to clean the registry. All worked well, except now whenever I reboot or restart the system all the icons on the desktop are sorted and alligned to grid. It makes no difference how you check the align to grid option under the desktop arrange icons by selection. The sort, add, align to grid is always performed. I have a DEll Precission 340 about 4 years old and have never had this problem. The operating system is XP PRO. Hi Guys Im new and have never posted here before, so please help me out.
I have my computer specs, I have windows ultimate 64-bit completely updated and Im having some trouble with pinning to the taskbar

So I can pin items fine, but I can no longer change the order of the taskbar items.
I previously had (from left to right) Chrome> WMP > Explorer > Steam (Gaming Platform)
Only those four in that order, I tried pinning something else, which didnt work, and now I have this dilemma - it changed the order of the pinned icons and now I cannot seem to change them back into the desired order. Im guessing some regedit might fix this.

Tried locking and unlocking the taskbar
also tried going to
C:\Users\"user"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
and checked to see if there was any pinned programs that shouldnt be there. Any other Ideas?

I'm hoping that is can be accomplished via the registry or something like that. Here's the reason for my question:

I am using a laptop and it's LCD screen resolution is max 1900x1200. The icons in my Task bar are in a specific order/location. For example, on the LCD screen, I have two rows of icons and one of my most-frequently used apps is the last one on row 1.

However, when I dock my laptop, my external monitor is 2560x1600 and now I only have one row of icons. Thus, that app that was at the end of row 1 is no longer at the end and now I have to "search" for it each time because I'm accustomed to it being at the end.

So, would I be able to dynamically change the order of the icons myself via the registry or something? Basically, I'm hoping to run a script/batch file that would set the order depending on whether I'm docked or not.

I'm wondering if anyone has a solution to this: lately, when I update an application which I have in my Quick Launch toolbar, its icon move to the end of the list of icons (as if it were a newly installed program and not one that had simply been updated). This means every time I update, say, Firefox, or Thunderbird, or Seamonkey, etc., I have to go into the Quick Launch toolbar and drag it back to its proper place.

Is there any way to address this or is it something that's changed in how Mozilla updates its programs? Ideally (and what used to happen) is that most program icons stayed put after the programs they pointed to were updated.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

A:Order of icons in Quick Launch changes after application updates

What is happening is that the update uninstalls the currently installed version, thus it is no longer in the QL area, then it installs the new version which is placed to the right of all existing icons. At least that is my guess.

so something has changed in the last few months. my files are no longer in logical order. for example, lets say i open Winamp (yes I still use winamp! lol) and click on an album that has 16 tracks; all the tracks will be in random order.

so of course, i right click and go "arange icons by"... and change to what it should be.

but sure enough, next time i go into that same folder, the files and are all in random order again. same with my word documents as well, when i go into a folder
i believe this first happened when i cleaned some malware and viruses off my computer a few months ago.
how do i change things back to normal???

Windows 7 desktop annoys me in the way it sorts desktop icons.

Say I add an icon and want it alpha sorted with the existing desktop icons. Right click on the desktop and Sort by ==> Name. The icons are sorted in reverse alpha order.

To get them sorted in forward alpha order, I have to do the right-click-sort-by-name process again.

How can I get Windows 7 to always sort the desktop icons in forward alpha order instead of alternating between forward and reverse order?

A:Favorite bar icons changed save order after TH2 update - Help

I've not found a way to change this behaviour but you can drag items to a new position. I think the reason they changed it is because the Favourites bar can fill up and then new items don't appear as they are hidden off to the right side of the bar and you have to click the double arrow (>>) to see them.

The subject line tells it all. I am open to any suggestions!

I note that an old thread, virtually unanswered, received this reply:
"Well how many times a week do you need to sort the desktop icons for it to become annoying?
I personally don't use any of the sort-order preferences (non selected)...."

Well, that was a non-answer. I, too, face this inconvenience, and wonder why Windows would default to a descending search for the Desktop.

Probably like the person who first posted for help, I frequently add and delete different shortcuts as I work through the most current tasks and projects.

I don't generally think in reverse, so it is not as easy to find my alphabetized task when it is sorted in reverse order. This requires clicking on the "Sort by Name" twice to rearrange the icons, every time one is deleted or added. Inefficient, annoying, and a waste of time.

So again - is there anybody out there with a definitive answer to this reverse sort problem?

While working offline, my Dell Latitude 131L goes into hibernate. When I restart the laptop it opens to a generic "Dell" desktop picture. There is no Start Menu or toolbar. No desktop icons are available. The cursor is in the middle of the screen, but is of no use. I was NOT installing any software or hardware.

I attempted to reboot, same screen appears.

I am able to start in "Safe Mode."

I attempted to use a Restore point, but each time (I tried several dates) it will not take.

I called Dell and we ran a Hardware test (Fn and Power keys), no errors were present.

Update: It loads REAL slow, taking about 15 minutes or more. But then I can not anything. After an hour of loading, I ran Kaspersky and no threats were found.

Restarted and got a blue screen that says
Checking the file System C:
The type of file system is NTSF.
The volume is dirty

Then it does a series of verifications that take a long time.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The following steps will be a good start to resolving the issue. The first thing that you should do is to check that your hard drive is not failing. On a working computer, download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website to create a bootable floppy or CD.Find the brand name of your hard drive. You will find this info on the label of the hard drive (most likely you will have to remove the hard drive from the box to read the label). You will also find sufficient info to identify the drive (the model number) by looking at the hdd code in the BIOS Setup Menu, and then googling the code. Have you tried using parts lookup?  Choose "Mechanical Assemblies" on the left under commodity type.  Dont post your serial number here but if you put it in parts lookup you will find parts for your laptop.  I just looked up Generic u530.
With that part number you can get at Lenovo Encompass store.  Please verify part numbers before buying.
The above are for the hinge.  For the hinge cover  choose "LCD parts" on the left side under commodity type.  Below is hinge cover.

The Windows Photo Viewer will not display photos in the order they are sorted by Windows Explorer.
This is not referring to the slide show feature, just the forward and back arrows.
The only order pictures can be viewed is by name despite Windows Explorer being set at view by date, ascending.
I have repaired Microsoft Live Essentials, uninstalled and reinstalled but the issue remains.
This is also not an issue with photo tags or photo names.
Windows Explorer sorts as selected but click a picture in the middle to view, click the forward arrow and instead of the next date picture being viewed, the next name picture is viewed.

A:Windows Photo Viewer; sorting order not the same as view order

I upgraded to Windows 10 recently as well, I have the same problem and I also have a solution. However, I do not know, if it is ideal. :-)

What is obviously missing is an entry in the registry called DropTarget. This entry tells Windows Photo Viewer to display the images in the sorting order of the folder Photo Viewer got called from.

I saw that at least in my registry there is a DropTarget defined in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell\open\DropTarget. From the name of the key and from reading the docs this looks as if it would be applied to all calls to this program, but -if that actually is the case- for me this entry does not work. It has been there (at least) after my Windows 10 upgrade, also the "Clsid"="{FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D4285608A}" seems to be fine, but it does not do the job.

For me, this problem was present for jpg and png files, but not for bmp, dib, gif, jfif and what else can be opened with Windows Photo Viewer. To fix this, I have added the following to the Windows Registry:

After you added that to the registry, rightclick a jpg file, select "Open with", choose Windows Photo Viewer and click "Always open with this ... Read more

I have a small wireless network and i set encryption to WPA instead of WEP for tighter security but I kept having problems with a couple of the pc's not going online and at other times all 4 didn't find each other. I tried WEP but it's not as safe as WPA and it didn't work well either. I heard of a product called Alpha Shield. I checked it out and bought it. Now, it's a firewall, blocks all 3rd party pop-ups, makes your pc invisible to hackers, stops MS Blast, My Doom and similar worms and has 100% guaranteed security. With everything it does, isn't my wireless network as safe as it would be if I had WEP or WPA encryption working?

A:Alpha Shield

No. Alphashield is simply protecting the PC's, not the wireless network itself. Without WEP/WPA, anyone can get on your wireless network and connect to the internet through your router. ie. you're providing essentially free internet access to anyone within about 100 feet of your house.

If you don't care, then you're fine with just using that product.

FWIW, I don't think the problem you were experiencing was a WPA/WEP problem. I'd guess it may have been a shared key problem, or some other firewall (XP's built in firewall?) problem.

For some reason, after choosing a png, psd or tga that has the alpha channel enabled after saving, it doesn't appear once the texture is chosen when applying it on a surface in the material editor.

I can preview the textures in programs like windows fax/photo viewer and it shows as transparent, but is either white or grey fill in when placed in max.

Is there something else I must do to make it show through? In the viewer it would show as a mostly white texture, instead of the metal grate it's supposed to be.

I just found this [link] and decided to post it. FireFox's 3.7 Alpha 5 lets you throw your tabs on the top of the browser window, right below the title bar, like Chrome. I've been wanting Mozilla to do that for a while now. xD

A:FireFox 3.7 Alpha

It's looking good so far, but they really need to remove the title bar for it to be on par w/ Chrome. Tabs on top AND flush w/ top of screen when maximized is what makes the feature great in Chrome (allows less precise clicking, if you're like me & don't switch tabs using key shortcuts).

Hi,I'm new here so I hope I'm doing this right. For the past month or so my virus protection keeps "finding and blocking" alpha cleaner. I've tried everything to get rid of this <expletive> program to no avail. I think I finally found the problem in my registry. There's a folder there "Legacy alfa claner" or something similar and no matter what I try, it will NOT delete. If someone could help me get rid of this program I'd be forever greatful. The virus protection blocks it at LEAST 100 times a day. Here is my Hijack log. Thanks in advance,SharLogfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 8:21:20 AM, on 3/29/2006Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\mcafee.com\personal firewall\MPfTray.exeC:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\oasclnt.exeC:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\mcvsescn.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1141171544\... Has anyone ran this yet?

I haven't ran it on Windows yet, but I did run it on my Powerbook G4, I'm very impressed with it. Really the only differences between 9.6 and 10a is the rendering engine, but it seems to be significantly faster. I used to use Opera as my primary browser for any OS, and have since about 2000, but a few months ago I dropped Opera for Safari on my mac because Opera was just too slow and giving me a pinwheel at times I didn't think it should.

I did delete every bit of Opera 9 before installing Opera 10, so some of my speed increase maybe attributed to a fresh set of settings/preferences...

Was just wondering if anyone else has given Opera 10 a shot yet and what they think.

You can get it here: http://www.opera.com/browser/next/
They are of course clamining its much faster ect. And it does pass the Acid 3 test, which is somewhat cool.

I thought that I would post as I have seen some software posts for invisible Web Surfing and I wondered what Alpha shield really does?

We use it at work at the request of management. We are XP, OS sp2 and are hi speed and have a router each and the Alpha Shield. The large company that looks after our computers did a test and it showed the Ports all in stealth and so I wondered under what concept this devise works and whether it is really good to use as they have given me one along with a router to use at home as I do take work home and do it on my notebook.

I really would appreciate comments. I should say that we have other security programs and have never had problems with our work computers, malware, viruses or other nasties!

I hope to hear from someone regarding this inquiry, thankyou.

Hello all,

Looking to try and convert this alpha logo to DST but i cant seem to find any converters. Is there any programs out there? or anyone that can help me convert this?

Thank you!

A:Alpha Logo to DST?

Hi and welcome to TSG, there are some fairly expensive commercial programs that will do the conversion as well as some free or inexpensive ones that require a lot more user interaction to get good results. A search through some older posts in our "Digital Photography & Imaging" forum will find discussions on both types.

Due to copyright issues, this web site no longer permits members converting graphics files to DST files for other members.

I have a particular new version of the same thing that has been going around. The Police pro/windows antivirus 2009 and others. It is called Alpha antivirus. It has a program running in task manager called csrss.exe that will not let me stop. PC is running Vista home. I was able to run Malwarebytes and now it doesn't find any problems, but the problem is still there. Most programs stop working and I get a mesage about them. Running combofix in safe mode works, but I get a bsod (blue screen of death) about 20% into it. I hope this is a common problem and I am just an idiot. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

A:alpha antivirus

Download this file and save it to your desktop:http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scrDouble-click the file to run it. A command window will open briefly. Then run a quick scan with Malwarebytes. Post the Malwarebytes log.
