32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

Q: 32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

Hey guys, just have a few questions in regards to Vista x32 vs x64 as well as Direct x10 issues when it comes to gaming.

First off - What benefits do I get by running Vista x64 as opposed to x32 when it comes to gaming. I bought Call of Duty 4 as well as Bioshock, and will be buying some of the new games coming out such as Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2. Are any of these games 64 bit games?

Second off - Do I get any benefit playing a game made for DirectX 9 on a DirectX10 platform? Or are the graphic increases only visible in games actually made for DirectX 10? Again, are any of the games I listed above made to work with better graphics in DirectX 10?

Thanks guys!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: 32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

I discovered your inquiry while I was attempting to answer questions similar to yours.

This isn't much help but try reading about Epic Game's 'Unreal' game engine. I'm reading the article on wikipeadia about this game engine. This is the game engine used for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament.

Any way, it seems that if your running the game in a 64-bit environment like Windows Vista 64 the game will be in 64-bit mode.

It uses Directx 10 and Directx 10 also seems to be in 64-bit mode depending on weather Windows is in 64-bit mode.

In related news, it seems that the 'Unreal' game engine and the 'Source' game engine (Used for Half life 2, etc) are optimized to take advantage of multi-threading or in other words optimized for multi-core processors.

Anyway, see what conclusions you come to...I'll post an update as I learn more.

Hi all experts out thereSo I own an HP 14 r015tx geared up with a Dual-Core Intel i5-4210U with 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L dual-channeled memory, an NVIDIA GeForce 820M with 2GB of VRAM on 362.00 WHQL Driver and 4GB of shared VRAM, running on Windows 10 64-bit.On NVIDIA's DirectX 12 compatibility list, my 820M is listed with 12 API. But my dxdiag shows 11.3 and my NVIDIA Control Panel shows 12.0 runtime and 11_0 feature level.I read somewhere that Fermi architecture's DX12 driver is not yet available.First question: Is it really not available, or something else?Second question: Supposing my card's DX12 is not yet available (since I'm planning to play Quantum Break), can I make a Virtual Machine running Windows 10 with DirectX 12 implemented inside? (I mean having a virtual GPU which supports DirectX 12, like GTX series for example)Third question: When I install the NVIDIA driver using the one HP provided (ver. 353.86), the NVIDIA Control Panel shows Direct3D API 12.0 and 2GB of shared VRAM. When I install drivers from the GeForce experience and from NVIDIA's website (ver. 364.96), it shows Direct3D 11.2 and 4GB of shared VRAM. Can someone explain the differences and what is happening? (NB: HP's packed in 600MBs and NVIDIA's packed in 300MB download sizes)If there are differences, can someone provide me with the 364.96 one that is released by HP (not by NVIDIA) ?Sorry for the long question, thank you very much

Hi @phillmont22900, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!I read that your HP 14-r015tx Notebook and issue with DirectX 12 download. I was looking at our Windows 10 machine and it shows me that the DirectX 12 was built into the system on the Windows 10 install.  You might want to look at this link I found on Uninstalling the CCC.  Then try to use this tool to automatically select a correct CCC version for you and Windows 10. Please let me know how it goes.To show appreciation for my efforts kindly click the Thumbs Up below. Thanks.

1. Ran out of this space in my Q:Lenvovo - backup assigned partition.  14GB.  (My C: drive has 80GB free!) How can I fix this?  Is there a way to expand the partition without deleting it first?  Does Lenvovo or Microsoft or SSD manufacturer have a tool to do this where you just enter the amount you want to expand a partition to and it will adjust the other partition accordingly?  If not; I cannot delete the Q:Lenovo drive using file explorer or disk cleanup utility.  How do I remove at the original backup?  When I go to disk cleanup it shows blank the files; so it is a hidden file or subdirectory.  I even try signing on as System Administratin but forgot the password I created, it been so long ago and never use it.  LOL!   If I cannot do any of this:  There is an option to do a Windows 10 refresh but can you redirect it to a new SSD from the existing SSD? 2. I have a
HP Pavilion dv7t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
64bit with Windows Vista Home premium
Recently I had a friend take it and wipe it to start fresh.
when I got it back it is still pointing to a bizarre path..?? (which is one of the reasons I wanted to start fresh. It points to:

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Power2Go;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

why would this be the case? When I got it back I see that some things like my extra monitor was already installed.. (Before I even hooked it up??) and some folders I had renamed example folder.OLD was still here. (and many other things that lead me to believe it did not get formatted correctly. (and could still have virus?)
He used my factory disks. (which I do have)
can anyone advise me on what is going on?
thanks so much!!

A:Environment Variables questions and format questions

I've had a bunch of HP machines. But I never used the restore. I'm not sure if it formats or just installs over what's there. It may leave files and folders that are in subfolders of programs that come bundled with the machine assuming it's data or something. The path looks fine to me. That %SystemRoot% stuff is just a way to use environment variables in case the system is not installed on C:\Windows.

If you really just want the OS and not the bundled software see the threads about ISO download for Vista. You can evaluate for 90 days perfectly legally. There are also tutorials how to extend the evaluation by 30 days.

Hey guys, you might of seen a post or two about me not able to get our domain to use GPO's, but its all fixed now. YAY !
(It was the DNS, incase anyone was interested)

but now i got a few questions, i'll start with:

1. Is there anyway to configure a client by just having them log onto the domain? e.g. Disable Security Center, Windows Messanger, Add a Registry hack. etc.

2. Is there anyway to view a list of all websites visited on the network with information, eg. Who was looking at it(which user), at what time. etc

3. Is there a way to record a list of all objects printed from our print server with information? e.g. User that printed it, time it was printed, how many pages, how many copys. etc.

4. Is there a way to delete start menu files/folders with a logon script?

5. I'm going to put "Deep Freeze" on the computers that are accessed and used by the public, but i've never used it, nor have any experience with it.
Does it cause any problems with normal operation of the computer? if anyone could give me some feedback on this, i'd love to hear it.

Also, is it possible to get more then just 6 Virtual Drives on a computer?

i mean, isn't there 23 possible drives?

Brand new user.

a. The new PC came with McAfee anti virus.
Should I use it ?

Is it as good as AVG, e.g., which I used on my old W7 PC ? Use them both ?

b. And, how do I turn on the "Defender" anti virus which I understand is part of
the W10 package ?

Would it interfere with McAfee or AVG ? How good is it ?

c. How do I turn on the Firewall; I'm assuming there is one like in W7 ?

Much thanks,

A:New W10 User Questions (Basic Questions, Please)

McAfee, AVG and Defender are all anti-virus programs and you should only run one. In fact Defender will get turned off when another one is installed.

Right click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Then select Security and Maintenance and under Security it will show your the status of the Firewall, Virus and Spyware and which program is running what.

Control panel also has links to Defender and Firewall.

That McAfee is a trial version and at some point you will have to buy it.

I have a Packard Bell P133, model D135. Eight megs of
RAM are on the motherboard. According to a search of
this model on a 'Memory' website, this model has FPM non-
parity memory. The machine had two 4-MB modules installed
when it was new in 1996, for a total of 16 MB at time of purchase.
Since then, I have added two 8MB modules to bring it up to
32MB. Two weeks ago, I replaced the two 4MB modules with
two 32MB FPM modules, which was supposed to bring it up to a total of 88MB. When I boot up, it only reads slightly over 81MB as passed....of course, on the System Properties 'General' tab, 80MB is listed. Can anyone tell me what might have happened to the other 8MB?

Another question: Would parity memory be compatible with
non-parity memory? I know from research, that most servers use parity memory...parity being described as a feature of
a module for error-checking. Would parity memory work OK with non-parity, but not the other way around? The reason I ask is, I have an opportunity to buy some used 72-pin, FMP parity modules at a good price, and I just wanted to know if the two (parity and non-parity) would mesh. I wanted to bring it up to the max for this model....136MB, providing the 8MB on-board memory is read. That was my own theory about the missing 8MB....that the on-board memory, for some reason isn't being read. Any thoughts on this?

so its been a *real* long time since I played with computers.. Hello again.

I'm trying to cut some corners on a new box and I'm thinking I'd like to keep this video card. Its served me well since 2000. Its a 32 meg model I think. I'd like to keep the TV function of this card and the new ones are pretty steep

Any pitfalls with compatibility with new hardware/software? I'm thinking of an Asus something with an Intel P4 2.something mhz..., XP Pro (I can get it at a good price through work) I am not much of a gamer anymore but I'd like to play with some of the newer games a bit, other wise I'm looking for a machine that can keep up comfortably with all thats current.. DVD, multimedia, and being to keep up with large image files, stuff like that.

Is it a 2x,4x, or 8x ?
Perhaps it's a good idea to check that the AGP slot on the motherboard is compatible with you videocard. Some boards, especially the newer ones, are not backwards compatible because of voltages.
So for example, if your card is an 4x, and the board is 8x maybe they are not compatible(check to make sure).

Hey guys i looked on the microsoft website and it looks like the final service pack has come out. yay

Um but i noticed that the installation was 7.4 GB So i will have sp1 for seven when windows 9 comes out?

I thought there is no way in heck that this is right lol.

I looked for alternative and it says that in windows update it should be there with the size 1.9 gb well still kind of big but it is smaller than 7 gb :P

Well i looked in my win update and ofcoarse it isnt there

Well windows says if i install all the other updates it should be there when my computer is done doing the blue screen

well First question WHY THE HECK IS IT SO BIG lol.

The other question is it safe? i saw a few other people that were having truble when they installed sp1

thanks for any replies

A:7 sp1 questions

I think you talk about disk space required during the installation. The system is not really any bigger after SP1 is installed. I have done the installation on 3 systems up to now and did not have any problems at all. Just make sure you install it by itself and not together with other updates that might show up at the same time - install those first and then SP1.

This looks like an AMAZING deal and a great price. 1.5TB(Enough for what I do really...), and as fast as a Raptor in certain things.(According to many reviews, this is ACTUALLY TRUE!, but only during certain operations)

It's specs are excellent and price is flawless. It has 750 5 star ratings, but...350 bad star ratings. I read ALOT about the Barracuda and it has some serious issues I've read with locking up and stuff. I don't know if they've been completely resolved by now, though. =/

Seagate also has a reputation as the King of HDD's...

Western Digital is also another very well known name for HDD's. It's 10$'s more, it's specs are the same, but I read it's not quite as fast as the Barracuda in some respects, but I also read about a variety of RAID issues with it, so much so it can cause the Drive to die!

What do I do? They're the only ones on Newegg with 1.5TB HDD's out, at great prices, but both listed as having serious flaws!

Thank you.

I have several questions for you. I'm not sure if it's ok to post them all in one topic or if I should post several topics but I'll try all in one first and if that's not ok I'm sure someone will let me know.

I recently got a computer from a friend because mine crashed. I downloaded antivirus, antispy, antimalware and firewall software, and started cleaning up the computer. The person who had it before had never done any maintenance and it had loads of viruses and malware. I started deleting software I didn't want. The first issue is with ZoneAlarm, the firewall software I downloaded. It disabled internet explorer, and at first I couldn't figure out how to reenable it, so I tried to uninstall ZoneAlarm. It refuses to be uninstalled. I figured out how to get Internet Explorer working again, but don't like any program on my computer that doesn't allow me to uninstall it.

So question #1
How do I uninstall ZoneAlarm?

Next, as I was uninstalling unwanted programs I tried to uninstall Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 since I'd loaded Office XP. It won't uninstall. I've tried to do it in CCleaner and Revo Uninstaller and it doesn't work.

question #2
How do I uninstall Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007

It would be help full if we had you computer specs. I might be able to help on some of your problems. Are you using XP. Unplug from the internet. To remove Z/A, go to start/programs/Z/A there should be a uninstall listed. If that don't work try this. Start/Control Panel/ Add/Remove programs. Find Z/A and remove it from there. What you do or don't remove is up to you. Make sure you are in (NORMAL) mode. While in Add/Remove programs see if there are any more firewall or anti-virus programs there, any anti'spyware/malwareif so I would remove them. (LEAVE WINDOWS SECURITY ALONE). It can be used later as a starting place. If you have more than 1 active programs like Z/A they will cause all kinds of problems. If you get all these things removed make sure windows security is turned on you can use there security at this time. (Lower right had corner of task bar. I would not load any more programs until these problems are solved. Any windows office programs are very hard to remove. If this helps get back and we can work on the rest of the things. I will then give you some anti-spy ware and malware that lots of people here use and so on (JUST A REMINDER IF YOU GET ALL THAT REMOVED MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WINDOWS SECURITY TURNED ON BEFORE GOING ON THE NET)

Hi, some friends of mine has asked me to do some troubleshooting on their computers. Trouble is, I'm a devout Win 98 believer, and his system is running XP. So far, I HATE XP! I have a few general (and probably stupid) questions that might make all this easier, so here goes:
1- WHERE does the system tell me how much RAM the computer has? In Win 98 I just right click on MyComputer, and Properties tells me how much there is, and what percentege of the system resources are free. I did right click on the task bar and got a bunch of info that I can't decipher. Moving graphs and stuff.. AGGG! WHY did they do this to Windows?
2 - How do I eliminate the need for a password on a laptop running XP Professional?
3 - If a system is set up with an administrator, and some other accounts, is there a way of preventing the administrator from invading another account and reading info? Does changing the logon password provide any protection from a snooping administrator?
4 - Can a laptop designed for WinME run XP efficiently? (14gb hard drive)
5 - Is fdisking a laptop essentialy the same as fdisking a desktop? I want to remove XP from a laptop and install 98.

1. I have a program called Norton Crash Guard. When I accessed it I noticed a program called lxbabmom (not responding). What is the program and what are the implications that it isn't running?

2. What are the implications of reloading windows 98se without wiping the original program off first? Will it fill in corrupted parts of the existing program or do I have to go through a major exercise to deal with the issues I have?

A:Two questions

The "lxbabmom" is unrecognised as a program, perhaps you are infected with some malware?

Unless it was "lxbbbmom" which is a driver for a Lexmark printer.

Regarding reloading Window 98, it depends what exactly you mean. A clean install (which is reformat and reinstall) will wipe everything that is on your hard drive. All data and programs will be gone.

Reloading "over the top" will clean up Windows but will not always clean up any malware.

Always assume that any such operation will result in the loss of your data and backup accordingly.

Hey all,

I'm starting to get into Windows Update and Windows Activation troubleshooting again after quite a while out, and I'm currently reading up on my literature. Basically I just read the activation process of the OEM Activation 2.0 whitepaper and I have a few questions about it

First of all, OA2.0 is for Windows Vista, and not for Seven, since Seven uses OA2.1 (or at least, I think it does).

The whitepaper starts with explaining what WPA (Windows Product Actvation) is, and that it is an alternative for OA 2.0, which I think is weird. Basically this would mean that WPA (entering your product key to activate Windows) is an alternative to activating Windows using the BIOS information (SLIC Table, OEMID etc). Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Vista always activate via WPA? I mean, you always have to enter a valid product key in order to use it outside of the grace period. I've seen a few MGA's where Vista did activate using the product key, but where the SLIC didn't match; wouldn't that mean that Windows used both WPA and OA 2.0?

Or am I completely missing the point and does OA 2.0 also incorporate WPA? Since the whitepaper does mention that when it is not possible to use OA 2.0 it will divert to WPA.
But if this is the case; that Windows can change between WPA and OA 2.0, wouldn't that mean that you could install a type 2 SLP onto a different machine, as long as you can make the key work, since Windows will simply revert to WPA is no valid OEM public key is detected... Read more

A:OA 2.0 questions

OA activation is used when activating an OEM_SLP Key - WPA is used for everything else.
WAT was not introduced until Feb 2010 - after SP2 for Vista was released. It's only on Win7. I think the reasoning is that the SLT's for Vista got in the way of introducing a similar innovation there.
WAT does a lot of things very differently to anything that preceded it - for one thing, it phones home every 90 days to check for updates definitions and block lists.

I was just told that in order for me to burn DVD's I would need to install the windows service packs.

I was told that I need these service packs to get the USB 2.0
I was trying to get info on this USB 2.0( didnt even know it excisred till I plugged in my external Sony DRX-710UL into my USB port & it said I my computer didnt support HIGH SPEED. I could still use the product, but it would be at slower speed.
Anyway, I though I understood it to be that I also needed a new HIGH SPEED PCI card and the USB 2.0 that microsoft had only supported the USB port if the updated hardware was installed.
I dont know if I said that right.
I guess, the bottom line is, do I need to install those service packs to get the USB 2.0 support to use my dvd writer?

Does the AMD CCC that is installed depend on the graphics chipset (i.e. different interface for different chipsets)?

When I install an AMD graphics card, the display always appears underscanned by about 10%.
On my main desktop, I can open CCC and adjust the overscan and underscan.I've been trying an old HDD in another box.
I'm using the onboard graphics chip set (using the HDMI output).
The display appears to be underscanned by ~10%.

The CCC on this machine looks completely different and it has no adjustments for overscan and underscan.
Everything is presets, so nothing can be adjusted (apart from 3D settings). The irony is that despite all of the complaints about drivers in Linux Distros, Linux Mint 16 "just worked" (i.e. proper resolution and scan width).

Does anyone know how I can fix the underscan issue?
Can I just download a different version of CCC and install it?

I had to reformat my HD and decided to try creating two partitions on the C drive: one for the OS (Win XP Home SP2) and one for programs.

So far so good.

1. Everytime I install a progarm components are installed on the C drive anyway. Mainly stuff that is pinned to the start menu. Does this have to be this way? Can I change it so that the Start menu reads from the same drive I install my programs into?

2. If not, can I repartition the drive to enlarge the partition that the OS is on without causing any problems? When I created the partitions I guess I made the OS partition too small. If I use Partition Magic can I resize the two partitions and not cause any complications?

3. Are there settings that can be changes to change where files are automatically saved? For example the favorites folder. Do they have to save on the C drive? Is it bad to change the dirve if it is possible?

I know, many questions. Just trying to learn. I appreciate any help and input. Thank you ahead of time.

Just a quick question. With my G/B EP45-UD3P that I'm getting next week, and I'm also looking at getting Corsair Dominator 4GB 1066Mhz DDR2 RAM with it. However, the motherboard supports 1.8v RAM, and the dominator is 2.1v. I can change the voltage in the BIOS to support my RAM, and it would all be fine, right?

Also, currently my OS picks up the 4GB I currently have in my PC and says only 2.5GB is usable? I am running Windows 7 RC x64, and I read somewhere that my GC945 Chipset that I currently have limits to 3GB RAM, but why would it be at 2.5GB? Would it be because my XFX 9800GT is using 512MB Graphics? When I get my next motherboard (P45 Chipset), would this still occur?

Finally, I currently have 4GB 800Mhz G.Skill RAM installed. Would there be any noticeable difference between 800 and 1066Mhz?

Okay, I have a windows XP Dell Dimensions DIM2400 Home Edition. Version 2002, Service Pack 2

Question 1. How do I find out if I am the Administrator? Would I be able to find it on my comptuer and if I am the admin. but forgot under what name I used, how can locate it?

Question 2. When I received my computer a few years ago, it came with Music match for windows media and Music Match Jukebox. Do I need those or can I delete them from the add/remove programs?

Question 3. On the local disk, there is a folder called 1386. There are a bunch of files and what not in there and some of these files are compressed files. Can I delete these compressed files? I am low on disk space and it keeps telling me to free space on the drive by deleting old or unnecssary files, click here. I click it and it brings up my disk cleanup. I've run it several times, but it hasn't made a difference.
The compressed files start with a bunch of numbers like 3EC317800etc etc. with a date modified in Nov. 2004. All of these compressed files are dated in Nov. 2004.

A:I Have Some Questions

Hi Omato3,1. I'm working in Vista Home Premium now, but for the user account info, I think this should work on XP, as well.Go into your Control Panel, double-click on User Accounts, go to Manage another account. In Vista, it then lists all user accounts, including their types.2. You should be able to uninstall those programs without any ill effects. My recollection is that I uninstalled them when I first got XP a number of years ago. I'd suggest that if you're asked during the process if you want to remove any shared files that you say no. In other words, elect to keep any shared files.Hope this helps. ETA: Oops. You added question 3 while I was writing this post. Sorry, but I can't help you with that one.

1. I uninstalled Java but its Control Panel entry seems to be stuck in the Control Panel. I actually removed it with Revo Uninstaller which is more powerful than Windows' own uninstall utility. How do I remove that invalid Java entry from the Control Panel??? I even tried to use Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove Java's remaining components but the invalid entry remains in the Control Panel.

2. I noticed that as my video and song collections increase, Windows Media Player 12 gets slower to open the first time I try to open it since I turned on the PC. Anything I can do to speed this up a little???

3. In Windows Media Player 12, how do I make the buttons red instead of blue. I discovered a registry hack to change WMP12's background here in this forum so there must be a hack to change the play/pause, forward, backward, shuffle, repeat and volume buttons to red. I already saw someone here posting a screenshot of his WMP12, having red buttons.

I have two questions regarding customization :O

One is regarding My Computer. Formerly, My Computer used to have a menu to the right, allowing you to select which drive to open. Now it seemingly disappeared. How can I get this menu back?

Second is adding a folder, or some place holder to achieve the same purpose to the left side. Is it possible to pin a folder or something like an icon with user made Tasks (similar to programs like Steam, CCleaner, etc.) so I can do multiple similar tasks with only one thing on the start menu? Thanks.

A:Two Questions

In regard to the first question:
Right Click Taskbar > Properties > Start Menu Tab > Customize (See Below for Beyond That)

I don't think that the other question is possible with a folder in the left hand side of the start menu. However, you could do it by placing a folder within your user folder or documents folder and then displaying that folder as a menu using the same method as computer. In other words, place your scripts in a folder named "Tasks" within your user folder and display your user folder as a menu.

You can also do it using a toolbar via the taskbar. I use a toolbar to launch speed settings for my fans. In order to do this, create a folder and place whatever tasks you wish to execute in it. I use command prompts to launch a program with settings, but you could use anything that can be executed. Now right click on the taskbar, go to toolbars and create a new toolbar. Navigate to your folder and choose it. You can place it wherever you want on the taskbar, use icons, or a label, use a pop up or just a string of icons.

1) Is there any way you can remove the 'grid' on the desktop and in files? What I mean is, when you mouse over things it highlights a square behind it and when you drag things it snaps to a square, like the files are all on a huge grid. Is there any way to remove the highlighting and let you move files to any location like in Windows XP?

2) When I drag and drop a file from one folder to another, instead of cutting it from the one file and pasting it into the other, it copies the file(s), so instead of moving the file from one place to the other I end up just copying it and having the original in the same place. Any way I can make it cut instead of copy itself?

3) Is there a way you can change the font in the sticky notes program?

4) Is there a way you can make the left-hand side of the start menu a color other then white without downloading any custom themes or anything?

5) Is there a way you can change the background color of windows explorer?
EDIT: On this note, is there also a way you can change the color of the two toolbars in windows explorer? (The file, edit, view, etc. one and the Organize, Burn, New folder, etc. one)

6) In the start menu and login screen, where it displays the users profile picture, is there a way you can change the color of the border/padding around the picture? It's blue by default which looks really bad with my picture.

A:A few questions

1) Yes that can be done, with an edit in the aero.msstyles (or your custom msstyles if your using a custom theme from deviantART. This will also need you to enable custom themes, and it will require Windows Style Builder for editing the images in the msstyles file)

2) I dont think you can, but i'm not sure.

3) Not sure about that one.

4) No. You have to use a custom theme for that to change.

5) Yes, that can be done with Custom windows 7 themes or WindowsBlinds

6) Yes. The images are located in explorer.exe . Extract them and change the hue/sat in Photoshop/Paint.net/Gimp and assign the changed images to replace the old ones and save the explorer.exe (you will have to take ownership of explorer.exe before doing this)

7) Thats not possible as far as i know

8) That is probably possible, but i dont know how

9) I'm not sure what you mean
Hope this answers some of your questions

This is computer related. Bear with me. I am DVD dumb.

I am very new to DVD's but fed up with my VCR's eating tapes. Can I get a DVD recorder for my TV and play those DVD's on my computer also? Can I play prerecorded movies on my computer? I am debating on getting one. I don't want just a DVD player as I don't watch prerecorded movies as much as I watch recorded shows. I want to record the shows I am not able to watch when they are on. It would be nice to play them on the computer besides.

I would be getting the erasable DVD type.
Anything else I need to know that is not too technical?

Yes to the first question but with some caveats. Format and the like. Definitly yes on the second question. Check this site out for an education on DVD recorders.

I am running windows xp home, i was going through and uinstalling unused programs and was wondering what a few programs were that i didn't recognize.

Browser Address Error Redirector

My Websearch(cursor mania)

Then I was wondering if it is okay to uninstall the following:

Microsoft Digital Image Starter Edition 2006-----this came with the computer, I haven't ever used it but I'm sure it is like all the other microsoft programs that came with the computer, a trial version. can i uninstall this, it is taking up 133 MB of room
Microsoft Works----Another program that came with the computer as a trial but I never use. 266 MB

SBC Yahoo Applications----I used to be with AT&T, when they sent me the CD with their program on it which I installed. I am pretty sure that this is some trash left over but want to make sure it isn't part of something bigger, 35.99 MB

Then in my temp file, there is one file that will not delete and I have tried multiple programs that promise to be able to deliver, i've tried everything. All I want to know if it is a harmful file. BCG2.TMP

While I am here, I know that this is not the right forum but I don't want to leave a lot of threads open, when AVG quarantines infected files, do i need to remove them?

A:Just Some Questions

AVG quarantines stuff so that it won't hurt your system. If you're sure that you don't need them, then feel free to delete them.It depends upon who installed the Browser Address Error Redirector - and if the Windows one is still in place. It's a handy tool to have when you reach an error on a web page.IMO it's safe to uninstall all the rest.As for the BCG2.TMP file, submit it to this site for analysis: http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and see what it says. There's other ways to get rid of it - but depending on it's size (let us know that also) it may be easier to just leave it there (if it's harmless).

A:IE9 and MSE some questions

Hi chrysalis,

I'm not so sure about your IE9 questions but I do know that MSE automatically updates itself on a daily basis. It will check if there are any updates and download them itself. However, there are instances that MSE updates do pass through Windows Update, especially if there is a major update of some sort. This is one drawback on MSE I think.

I just posted the following in the General Forum.
I realize that it should probably have gone here.

I apologize for this double posting, as I really don't want to go against any Forum protocols. Very, very appreciative of all the help I've received.
New HP PC. 64 Bit W7 Home Premium

Have been fighting this problem of Windows Explorer stopping every 1/2 hour or so, and then restarting again, for another 1/2 hour perhaps.

The Event Log shows zillions of items, most with ATI mentioned.

There are new ATI Drivers, apparently, for my ATI graphics card.

So, with agreements from those knowledgeable folks here, I tried to download them and install them.

The ATI site says I need Microsoft .New SP2 on my PC or I will get an error msg.
Well, I did get a msg to the effect that it did not install.

a. I tried the W7 search box for .net, but nothing came up.
Does this mean that I don't have .net installed, or that it just isn't picked up by the search ?

b. Should my new PC have come with it ?

My W7 is a 64 bit version.
There seem to be many, many, versions of .net available for Downloads, as well as Service Packs.

c. If I do have to install it, can someone please tell me Exactly what I
should install ?

- Should I install any of the Service Packs afterwards ?

- There also seems to be .net SP3 available.
Is this what I want ?

Much thanks,

say i press control+alt+delete, and want to close some of the programs/processes i have running... how do i know which ones are ok to close and which ones the computer needs to run?

and a less important question:

i mainly use my computer to use photoshop, and i listen to music on winamp while i use photoshop. lately, after a few minutes of play, winamp starts getting really crackly sounding. i close it and restart it and then its fine for another few minutes. any ideas what could be going wrong?

Answer to first question is what OS are you running, and what do u have loaded on ur computer...run HJT and post it in here and let us see what runs and then we can tell u or not what processes can and cannot be terminated.

To your 2nd question....could be the song itself, or maybe something else is playing with sound, don't know unless u can tell us what u are doing at the time...well to me that is, there is a number of things.
