32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

Q: 32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

Hey guys, just have a few questions in regards to Vista x32 vs x64 as well as Direct x10 issues when it comes to gaming.

First off - What benefits do I get by running Vista x64 as opposed to x32 when it comes to gaming. I bought Call of Duty 4 as well as Bioshock, and will be buying some of the new games coming out such as Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2. Are any of these games 64 bit games?

Second off - Do I get any benefit playing a game made for DirectX 9 on a DirectX10 platform? Or are the graphic increases only visible in games actually made for DirectX 10? Again, are any of the games I listed above made to work with better graphics in DirectX 10?

Thanks guys!

Preferred Solution: 32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: 32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

I discovered your inquiry while I was attempting to answer questions similar to yours.

This isn't much help but try reading about Epic Game's 'Unreal' game engine. I'm reading the article on wikipeadia about this game engine. This is the game engine used for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament.

Any way, it seems that if your running the game in a 64-bit environment like Windows Vista 64 the game will be in 64-bit mode.

It uses Directx 10 and Directx 10 also seems to be in 64-bit mode depending on weather Windows is in 64-bit mode.

In related news, it seems that the 'Unreal' game engine and the 'Source' game engine (Used for Half life 2, etc) are optimized to take advantage of multi-threading or in other words optimized for multi-core processors.

Anyway, see what conclusions you come to...I'll post an update as I learn more.

Hi all experts out thereSo I own an HP 14 r015tx geared up with a Dual-Core Intel i5-4210U with 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L dual-channeled memory, an NVIDIA GeForce 820M with 2GB of VRAM on 362.00 WHQL Driver and 4GB of shared VRAM, running on Windows 10 64-bit.On NVIDIA's DirectX 12 compatibility list, my 820M is listed with 12 API. But my dxdiag shows 11.3 and my NVIDIA Control Panel shows 12.0 runtime and 11_0 feature level.I read somewhere that Fermi architecture's DX12 driver is not yet available.First question: Is it really not available, or something else?Second question: Supposing my card's DX12 is not yet available (since I'm planning to play Quantum Break), can I make a Virtual Machine running Windows 10 with DirectX 12 implemented inside? (I mean having a virtual GPU which supports DirectX 12, like GTX series for example)Third question: When I install the NVIDIA driver using the one HP provided (ver. 353.86), the NVIDIA Control Panel shows Direct3D API 12.0 and 2GB of shared VRAM. When I install drivers from the GeForce experience and from NVIDIA's website (ver. 364.96), it shows Direct3D 11.2 and 4GB of shared VRAM. Can someone explain the differences and what is happening? (NB: HP's packed in 600MBs and NVIDIA's packed in 300MB download sizes)If there are differences, can someone provide me with the 364.96 one that is released by HP (not by NVIDIA) ?Sorry for the long question, thank you very much

A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!I read that your HP 14-r015tx Notebook and issue with DirectX 12 download. I was looking at our Windows 10 machine and it shows me that the DirectX 12 was built into the system on the Windows 10 install.  You might want to look at this link I found on Uninstalling the CCC.  Then try to use this tool to automatically select a correct CCC version for you and Windows 10. Please let me know how it goes.To show appreciation for my efforts kindly click the Thumbs Up below. Thanks.

1. Ran out of this space in my Q:Lenvovo - backup assigned partition.  14GB.  (My C: drive has 80GB free!) How can I fix this?  Is there a way to expand the partition without deleting it first?  Does Lenvovo or Microsoft or SSD manufacturer have a tool to do this where you just enter the amount you want to expand a partition to and it will adjust the other partition accordingly?  If not; I cannot delete the Q:Lenovo drive using file explorer or disk cleanup utility.  How do I remove at the original backup?  When I go to disk cleanup it shows blank the files; so it is a hidden file or subdirectory.  I even try signing on as System Administratin but forgot the password I created, it been so long ago and never use it.  LOL!   If I cannot do any of this:  There is an option to do a Windows 10 refresh but can you redirect it to a new SSD from the existing SSD? 2. I have a
HP Pavilion dv7t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
64bit with Windows Vista Home premium
Recently I had a friend take it and wipe it to start fresh.
when I got it back it is still pointing to a bizarre path..?? (which is one of the reasons I wanted to start fresh. It points to:

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Power2Go;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

why would this be the case? When I got it back I see that some things like my extra monitor was already installed.. (Before I even hooked it up??) and some folders I had renamed example folder.OLD was still here. (and many other things that lead me to believe it did not get formatted correctly. (and could still have virus?)
He used my factory disks. (which I do have)
can anyone advise me on what is going on?
thanks so much!!

A:Environment Variables questions and format questions

I've had a bunch of HP machines. But I never used the restore. I'm not sure if it formats or just installs over what's there. It may leave files and folders that are in subfolders of programs that come bundled with the machine assuming it's data or something. The path looks fine to me. That %SystemRoot% stuff is just a way to use environment variables in case the system is not installed on C:\Windows.

If you really just want the OS and not the bundled software see the threads about ISO download for Vista. You can evaluate for 90 days perfectly legally. There are also tutorials how to extend the evaluation by 30 days.

Brand new user.

a. The new PC came with McAfee anti virus.
Should I use it ?

Is it as good as AVG, e.g., which I used on my old W7 PC ? Use them both ?

b. And, how do I turn on the "Defender" anti virus which I understand is part of
the W10 package ?

Would it interfere with McAfee or AVG ? How good is it ?

c. How do I turn on the Firewall; I'm assuming there is one like in W7 ?

Much thanks,

A:New W10 User Questions (Basic Questions, Please)

McAfee, AVG and Defender are all anti-virus programs and you should only run one. In fact Defender will get turned off when another one is installed.

Right click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Then select Security and Maintenance and under Security it will show your the status of the Firewall, Virus and Spyware and which program is running what.

Control panel also has links to Defender and Firewall.

That McAfee is a trial version and at some point you will have to buy it.

Hey guys, you might of seen a post or two about me not able to get our domain to use GPO's, but its all fixed now. YAY !
(It was the DNS, incase anyone was interested)

but now i got a few questions, i'll start with:

1. Is there anyway to configure a client by just having them log onto the domain? e.g. Disable Security Center, Windows Messanger, Add a Registry hack. etc.

2. Is there anyway to view a list of all websites visited on the network with information, eg. Who was looking at it(which user), at what time. etc

3. Is there a way to record a list of all objects printed from our print server with information? e.g. User that printed it, time it was printed, how many pages, how many copys. etc.

4. Is there a way to delete start menu files/folders with a logon script?

5. I'm going to put "Deep Freeze" on the computers that are accessed and used by the public, but i've never used it, nor have any experience with it.
Does it cause any problems with normal operation of the computer? if anyone could give me some feedback on this, i'd love to hear it.

Also, is it possible to get more then just 6 Virtual Drives on a computer?

i mean, isn't there 23 possible drives?

I have a Packard Bell P133, model D135. Eight megs of
RAM are on the motherboard. According to a search of
this model on a 'Memory' website, this model has FPM non-
parity memory. The machine had two 4-MB modules installed
when it was new in 1996, for a total of 16 MB at time of purchase.
Since then, I have added two 8MB modules to bring it up to
32MB. Two weeks ago, I replaced the two 4MB modules with
two 32MB FPM modules, which was supposed to bring it up to a total of 88MB. When I boot up, it only reads slightly over 81MB as passed....of course, on the System Properties 'General' tab, 80MB is listed. Can anyone tell me what might have happened to the other 8MB?

Another question: Would parity memory be compatible with
non-parity memory? I know from research, that most servers use parity memory...parity being described as a feature of
a module for error-checking. Would parity memory work OK with non-parity, but not the other way around? The reason I ask is, I have an opportunity to buy some used 72-pin, FMP parity modules at a good price, and I just wanted to know if the two (parity and non-parity) would mesh. I wanted to bring it up to the max for this model....136MB, providing the 8MB on-board memory is read. That was my own theory about the missing 8MB....that the on-board memory, for some reason isn't being read. Any thoughts on this?

modules in one bank work with 60ns modules in another ... Read more

Hi all

I have two questions in this forum to ask:

1) Whenever I intend to install any softwares, some give two executable files, one for Windows 32bit and the other for windows 64 bit. What are these? I am using the Windows XP Home edition [1GB RAM and 120GB HDD] and how should I know which one to install ?

2) I have a broadband internet connection with a bandwidth of 2Mbps. I understand that when connected to internet, my IP address is my identity in the WWW. But recently I came to know that IP can easily misused by some websites and hackers. Therefore it is essential to protect our IP address while surfing from intruders. I also don't wish to mask(proxy)/hide my IP as it is not legal (?). Therefore, my question is, "Are there some open source softwares to protect our IP or is there some technique in windows to play around?"

I am really curious to know about these, please share your knowledge.

Thank you for your replies,

Have a great day

Hello all and good day.

I have a few questions about my OS and want to know if anyone can help me.

1- Why am I able to "Safely Remove Hardware" all my SATA (HDx4 and DVDx2) drives along with my USB devices? I don't want them in there...ever.

2- I was looking at creating a backup of my system with the Vista x64 Ultimate "Backup Your Computer" option and I can't see my 1TB ( D: ) HD but I can see my other 750GB ( E: ) HD (Full). But when I go to "Back up Files" option I can see all my drives.

3- Is there a good FREE back up software for Vista x64 Ultimate?

I ask this because I just had to do a full reinstall because I had a ndis.sys boot problem that prevented me from being able to boot Vista in any form even after a restore and repair.
Thanks for your time.

A:A few questions?

1 - Not sure why. I don't think my drives show up there. They might if I have a USB device plugged in. Basically showing all drives on the system. I don't think you can disconnect them using the tool if you tried. If you can, then my guess is your install of vista is hosed and you need to reinstall it. That would be easier than trying to find an answer to that question I think.

2 - I don't use Windows Backup. Not robust enough for me.

3 - One of the best backup utilities (in my opinion) is Acronis TrueImage.

I just uninstalled Norton and installed AVG.

AVG says that the next tests and updates will be on 12/21 at 8AM. Does that mean I need to be sure my computer is online then, or, if it is not, will the tests and updates take place when I do go online after that time?

AVG says about the rescue disk that it "enables you to scan and clean files on your computer in MS-DOS mode (at the command prompt). This is often necessary when removing virsues on computers which have sharing violations or insufficient user access rights. It is also useful when your computer's system areas have become infected."

My computer doesn't share with any other computer and I guess I have all the user access rights available. I presume that if my antivirus programs work right I don't have to worry about the system areas becoming infected.

So my impression is that, while there may be some remote chance of needing the rescue disk, it is indeed remote. Am I wrong about that?

The rescue disk program says the disk should be updated whenever AVG is updated. That seems like a lot of trouble. That's why the question above.

I have some questions about Spybot S & D?

1.) What is the Immunization feature? Than a check box is checked that says something about preventing bad downloads in IE. What does all this mean?

I had to reformat my HD and decided to try creating two partitions on the C drive: one for the OS (Win XP Home SP2) and one for programs.

So far so good.

1. Everytime I install a progarm components are installed on the C drive anyway. Mainly stuff that is pinned to the start menu. Does this have to be this way? Can I change it so that the Start menu reads from the same drive I install my programs into?

2. If not, can I repartition the drive to enlarge the partition that the OS is on without causing any problems? When I created the partitions I guess I made the OS partition too small. If I use Partition Magic can I resize the two partitions and not cause any complications?

3. Are there settings that can be changes to change where files are automatically saved? For example the favorites folder. Do they have to save on the C drive? Is it bad to change the dirve if it is possible?

I know, many questions. Just trying to learn. I appreciate any help and input. Thank you ahead of time.

Hi everyone, I am a new member.

I was enjoying a glass of wine the other evening, and I spilled a full glass of wine onto the keyboard of my Toshiba Satellite which had Windows XP ... I killed it DEAD

Anyway, I went to town (I live in the bush) and bought a new Toshiba Satellite laptop.

When I got home I found it had Vista in it

No matter how much I tried, I cannot get it to perform like any of the other Toshiba sattelites that I have had over the years with XP in them. (this is my own personal observation).

"happy days" I found XP software on Ebay for only au$60 so I bought it.

I am not really computer "savvy" but I struggle through.

I cannot get the computer to download the new XP program, it keeps telling me that I cannot download something old onto something new

Can someone please tell me how to delete Vista from my computer so I can download XP

thanks everyone

Hi John,
Good on you for buying a toshiba satellite.I've got one and it rocks (with vista)

Yours probably has vista basic.
I would back up any data onto any external harddrive then restart the computer and go into the bios. Change the boot sequence so it boots from cd.
Insert windows xp cd press any key to continue.
when the windows xp installation screen pops up choose install windows or something like that.
agree to any terms and conditions. then choose the partition to install on and use the arrow keys to select it.when it comes up with a screen saying format or leave.
Quick Format to ntfs. You should be good.
I know your not tech savvy so if you have any questions just ask.
I can give a more detailed tutorial if you wish.

Hello to u all

Mcafee found two trojans in c:/system volume information file and deleted them. After that i found this file and tried to open it but access was denied to me.A number of strange things have happened after that:

I opened winamp to listen to some music and to my surprise, instead of the usual winamp skin there was a skin of a snake's head smiling at me!!!Music was playing normal despite all that.
I had to reinstall winamp to get rid of the snake.
Another thing ater that was that both of my back speakers stopped playing and no matter what i tried from the settings>control panel>sounds and audio devices>speaker settings>advanced nothing seemed to help. then one day i accidendly pulled out a cable from the subwoofer and !!! both back speakers start playing again!!!
The thing is this that is wrong because that cable is from the back speakers!!So when i put it in they stop playing and when i take it out they play!!!????????
Hmmmm did i mention that all my mp3 file disapeared three days ago? Thank god system restore did the job otherwise 20GB of music would be down the drain.

Enough with the serius problems

Does anyone knows how can i delete percision time and G start up from my system configuration utility start up tab? Its there although i've taken it out of my system(hope so).

Also i've noticed that on taskbar properties>customise menu there are a lot of unused past items that i want to erase (many of those were malware i had)but t... Read more

I have an old rig that I'm am going to upgrade since I do not have the money to build a completely new system yet. I am currently running with these specs

Pentium D 820 2.8 GHZ
1 gb of DDR 400 ram
geforce 7800 gs agp 256 mb
Asus p5pe-vm motherboard
dual SATA2 120 gb 7200rpm harddrives
Windows xp for gaming, Vista for productivity

As you can see, I'm running old technology (ddr1 and agp). I dont have the money for a completely new system (only about $400 to spend), so I thought about making 2 upgrades

Buying 2 sticks of 1 gb ram to move the total to 2 gbs (There are only 2 ram slots).
Upgrading my processor to a Intel Core 2 Duo Conroe e6600 2.4 ghz

Looking at benchmarks, this should increase my gaming performance signficantly for a mere $350 dollars. I dont play alot of the latest games, I just want to be able to play STALKER, Day of Defeat: Source and Dark Messiah of Might and magic over 30 FPS on meduim settings (I'm getting around 20 right now on any settings that I put them on, high or low). I think my processor is my bottleneck, and more ram can never hurt Would this be the fix im looking for until I can save up enough to buy a completely new rig?

Also, would I need to reinstall windows after I upgraded the processor?

Thanks for the help

Alright, first off i'd like to thank those that have helped me in the past, my computer runs flawlessly thanks to you guys. Now my sister has the problem.
Her computer has been running strangely slow, and some programs have been refusing to update.
I have a question seperate from that as well. Both mine and my sisters laptops run off a wireless feed to the internet. Mine is somewhat farther away working fine, while hers is almost directly by the router yet her laptop gets little to no connection. Don't know if you can help with that but any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Back to the other thing, here is my sisters hijackthis log.

Hey All-

Trendmicro is telling me this-

worm_rbot.gen non-cleanable windows/system32/msnsvc.exe
worm_rbot.avl non-cleanable windows/system32/mspn32.exe
worm_sdbot.awp non-cleanable windows/system32/wuamgrds.exe

Are these flase positives? The first 2 are legit files as near as I can tell. This is my first time seeing trendmicros online scanner say something legit cant be cleaned.

Any opinions greatly appreciated!

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Those are all bad guys. Sometimes they look good. I has scvhost not svchost and it took me awhile to get it out.

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the ... Read more

i have a couple random XP questions -

my current desktop background was a nice picture i saw somewhere online so i rightclicked and selected set as background. now if i rightclick the desktop and goto properties this shows up as internet explorer wallpaper. is there some way to save it so that i can change my background now, but can come back to if when i want to?

while we're at it does anyone know of any good sites for good desktop backgrounds? ive tried googling on and off for years but havent come across as anything awesome yet. i want some nice beach backgrounds or tropical paradises. i saw some good thumbnails on webshots but when you open them they're no where as nice as they appear when minimized.

also when im in win explorer i like to see my icons grouped by type. i keep changing the view to group similar icons together, but it keeps changing back to being put in some other order, i think alphabetical. is there some master setting i need to change? why does my change not get registered permanently?

I guess sorry to tell you, that your log is clean. May be a hardware issue, I'd start by checking/replacing the power supply.

I don't see any anti-virus programs running in your log. That is not a good thing and a bit negligent. There is a very good, FREE AV program called AVG at http://www.grisoft.com You should install it sooner than later.

I'm currently in the Computer Tech program at the local college, but next year my college is planning to require us to bring our own computers :O

Since I don't want to purchase a laptop to be able to use Visual Studio, I'm considering using my BlackBerry PlayBook to rdp to my home computer (specs down below). I have a few questions:

1. Is it possible to have concurrent sesstions, or be able to log int a dedicted rdp account without booting off the main htpc/server user account?

2. What kind of perfomance can I expect, or will it be useable? I have vdsl2 and the computer is connected directly to the router. The school wifi is pretty good too.

A:have some questions about RDP

I'm not to sure on RDP and really never been a fan of because of the difficulties that are involved in it...it's too complicated in IMO. Not user friendly. As far as the Blackberry goes...that's a new one on me.

I prefer to use TeamViewer...there maybe an app for the blackberry but not quite sure.

Hi Tech Guy and every one!
I got some few questions.
I let ya know about that i got a Windows XP with these secure systems Ad-aware,F-security 2003.
I am unsure and abit of afraid of viruses, spyware,Hackers and keyloggers.
Ok now to the question.

Number one.F-security is a anti-virus and a firewall but i am unsure if it really
is protecting me i have like goten 6 kind of trojans but it seem like it have deleted them, but i dont know if it hold hackers away.

Number two.Ad-aware delet spyware. When i take a recommend search i see all of them and delet them but it seem like the same comes back again after i have been on the internet.

Number three.Keylogger i dont know if i am affected by one but i am not sure if i am how can i know that i am affected?

Sorry fore my bad English not my first languish.

A:Some questions.

Number 1:-
is you f-secure upto date? this is an antivirus and will only protect against latest infections if fully up-to-date.
if its not upto date and you do not have a subscription for updates run this online test http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall

Number 2:-
if you get spyware from visiting a website, clean with ad-aware then go back to website you will get the spyware again - all ad-aware does is clean up after the fact.

two programs which may help stop spyware from getting on the PC are:-
spywareblaster = http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
spywareguard = http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html

also another good spyware program is spybot

download, update and run spybot
http://spybot.safer-networking.de/ or
http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT or

then you need to make sure these programs - ad-aware/spybot/spywareblaster/spywareguard are all upto date each week - including your anti-virus

Number Three:-
post a hijackthis log here to see if you have a keylogger

download and copy hijackthis to its own folder, it makes backups so keeping seperate can be useful - run hijackthis

scan only DO NOT FIX ANYTHING post a log and await advise from one of the many experts in this forum.

I love ObjectDock and I love the taskbar too. I made the taskbar autohide but..
When I maximize any programs it will occupy full screen, can I maximize a program but it will not occupy full screen? What I mean is.. it will maximize AS IF the taskbar is not hidden.

Very annoying when I try to click on the minimize, maximize, close etc.. as the autohide will appear when I move over my mouse. Or maybe I can set the delay for the taskbar to appear?

Sorry for my bad english. Thanks in advance.

Hello laides and gentlemen. I have two very important questions...

1. I have a piece of crap mother board with only PCI for my video card. I want a new one that supports my RAM CPU and a PCI-E slot. When i get my new motherboard and put it into my comp. Do i need to re-install Windows on my hardrive or will everything just work fine?

2. Right Now I have 1 gig ram 2.66 ghz CPU and most importantly:

PCI 256 MB 128 bit NVIDIA GeFoce 5500 FX video card

Will this be decent enough to play Call of Duty with no Lagg??

you will need to reinstall windows. or do a repair install. but a clean format and reinstall is the best option.

Hello. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T60 that I would like to upgrade. I don't really have money to spend, but I do have a couple other laptops in the T-Series line that I can use for parts, consisting of a T61(not sure if p yet, have to check) and a T510. So, here come the questions. What I really want to upgrade is my GPU. It's very sad that I cannot run simple games such as Minecraft, which require an OpenGL of 2.0+. I am aware that most GPU on laptops are soldered to the motherboard, so I thought "What if I could change the motherboard to that of the T61 or T510?" Is that possible? More importantly, if it is possible, will the GPU of either of those motherboards support OpenGL 2.0? I'll probably have more questions later, but I'd really like to know if I can just swap motherboards for a better GPU. Thanks!

Mod Edit:  Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/523852/task-manager-process-orlyipexe-32/ - Hamluis.
I am having the same problem on my Windows XP.  My CPU is almost always running at %100.  One process that is eating the resources is the same as discussed earlier but under a different name 'duarsaa.exe' and the properities identify it as belonging to this 'IenMeramkel Antibibus'. It is located under documents and settings in a folder called 'Ombuxe'.
I have scanned my hard drive and deleted it but only after trying to stop the process in task manager.  It seems to be gone for a few minutes and then replicates itself and continues to drive the cpu crazy.
I have run Mcafee and MS scan to no avail.  Now what?

1/ i have a 160 gig maxtor thts' been around for a while; yesterday when i did a chkdsk /f /r , the log shows fixing some minor inconsistencies, etccc. but it shows 12 KB in bad sectors (a problem i have never seen before....until now); is there a utility to find out what files are on that bad sector so that i can move all files out of there except those on bad sectors? and doing a format wont fix the bad sector right

2/ on the more serious problem, i have 200g maxtor that recently made a whirling grinding noise when i start the computer; after slaving it to another computer, same symptoms, so what can i do next? should i do a chkdsk /f /r while it's grinding like that??? sounds freaky
