Yoga S3 Yoga 14 i5-4210U upgrade options

Q: Yoga S3 Yoga 14 i5-4210U upgrade options

I have a S3 Yoga 14 with i5-4210U Haswell CPU & GeForce 840M (Model# 20DM000VUS). I've searched and searched for any solution to upgrade the memory to 16GB, but seems only the Broadwell version can...so I'm stuck with 8GB. I already upgraded to a 1TB Evo 850 SSD which did boost overall speed a lot, but running out of memory all the time is driving me nuts. So my question is, is it possible to swap out the whole motherboard to a i5-5200U Broadwell version without any HW/SW conflict issues so I could upgrade to 16GB? Or can you only swap for the exact same MB? It'd be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new Yoga w/dedicated graphics such as the P40 and way less hassle as long as I wouldn't need to reinstall Windows and everything. Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,For quite a while now, I've been looking to upgrade my SSD in my X1 Yoga.  As you may know, the X1 Yoga was available with either a SATA-based SSD or a PCIe-based SSD (NVMe).  Unfortunately, information about compatibility isn't easy to come by.  In fact, I never found a concrete answer to the question I have been asking all along:  Can an X1 Yoga (i5-6200U model) ordered with a SATA-based SSD be upgraded to an NVMe drive?  I found a lot of 'No' answers online, but with no proof of that actually being the case.  The only cases I found of people upgrading their SSDs were folks with the i7 system boards.  A few people have mentioned that Lenovo's official answer (when they asked) about the matter is that when you order it with a SATA SSD, you cannot upgrade to an NVMe drive.   I didn't want to believe that they'd have a different part number for an i5-6200U board w/ 8 GB RAM for an SATA-based system versus an NVMe system.  The slot physically accepts an M-keyed NVMe drive, despite the SSD in there being a B+M keyed drive.  The BIOS also has a boot option for an NVMe drive.   So, I took the plunge (and risk) and bought an NVMe drive, and am very pleased to report that it works just fine!  There was no drama.  The only thing I had to do was to change the boot option to boot from the NVMe disk instead of the built-in SATA one.   I can't speak for the newer models, but mine (20FQ, i5... Hi All,I'm thinking about buying the Thinkpad X1 Yoga and currently leaning towards the FHD (1920x1080) option due to the fact I'm not sure how useful increased resolution would be on a 14" screen. I would more seriously consider the OLED model but the fact it has a glossy finish is kind of a negative for me. I'm also concerned about battery life and possible burn-in issues associated with OLED. I'm curious how the color and gamut of the WQHD IFD compares to the FHD model. Also the FHD doesn't list on the specs page as Anti-Glare, but the WQHD does. Is this correct?14" WQHD (2560 x 1440) OLED, Touch, 300 nits14" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, Touch, 300 nits14" WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS, Anti-Glare, 300 nitsAny advice on this decision is appreciated. Thanks,M

Having continuing problems with the Yoga 710-11 that is now out of warranty. Techical support advises that I must seek service from a local vendor/service location and the machine can no longer be returned to a Lenovo Depot Repair Center. I have spoken to a local vendor who said he would be able to have it serviced by Lenovo. Is that my only option for repair service at this time? Seems strange that I can not deal with the Lenovo Depot Repair Center as I have in the past with or with the warranty. Not really the type of service I expected from a former IBM Company.

I'm pretty serious about buying a Yoga 920, based on the (mostly) good reviews I've seen for it. However, one of the things that encouraged me to really dig this model were the color options for the case. Silly? Maybe a little, since it doesn't affect the machine's operations in the slightest, but I figure when I'm investing that much in a piece of tech, I should be able to somewhat be able to customize the color if they advertise being able to do so. In all of the promotional materials, they list 3 color options: silver, bronze, & copper. Now, I can find the first two on the Lenovo website - however, the bronze is only for the MOST expensive/tricked out version. The copper isn't even mentioned, even though there's a picture on the Yoga 920 product page showing it. There was no mention of certain colors being premium - so...... Why can't I get a bronze/copper Yoga 920 with any configuration LESS than 1 TB of storage and without the UHD screen? I'm wanting to get the more mid-level option, 8gb mem/512gb storage, and the FHD (for battery conservation purposes, and I just don't need the UHD). I've seen the lowest level configurations on Amazon & elsewhere in the bronze color, but the copper doesn't even seem to exist. What's up with that?

A:Color options for new Yoga 920 on Lenovo website?

I encountered the same frustration. I have been stalking this model for months and for what it's worth all of these colors were available the first week the laptop came out. You had the ability to choose your color and customize the CPU/memory/drive just as you can on other sites. I am mentioning this in hopes that they come back at some point. I was stuck on that bronze color and was able to find that color with the upgraded I7 processor at BestBuy. I purchased about a week ago and have been overall pretty happy with the laptop.

I've only seen older threads on this so I think a 2018 thread is in order. As soon as the Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd gen machines are available, I will want to drive 2 external monitors. One is 1600 x 1200 and the other is 2560 x 1440. In some of the CES announcements I heard about an Nvidia external docking station with "lightning" or something related to USB-C but augmented. I cannot find the information again, and someone who just visited me said that has been available for the 2nd generation version. So is there an "obvious choice" for what to do to connect to ethernet, to printers, etc., and also drive those two screens? Sounds like the new Intel graphics on the Kaby Lake machines will be able to go to a higher resolution externally, but I want to consider the best option given that I have some additional expense budget this year!

I am a very frustrated and angry customer at the moment as i keep running into Road Block and unacceptable answers.  This issue is enough to cause me to never buy another Lenovo laptop or any laptop at Best Buy!I bought my computer in July and in September i noticed a key had popped off-  the "< ," key next to the M key.  I have used the key board only when i was setting up-  now at my office and at customers i set it in downward dog mode ;-) and use a blue tooth key board.    So it is not from use that it broke.   I took the laptop into BEST BUY and was told that the key was missing a metal part on the back so they could not fix it onsite-  i would have to send it in and be without my laptop for a week to 10 days - unacceptable -  this was a month or more ago. I searched on the LENOVO website and could not find a way to purchase a single or the entire set of Keys!  I am self employed as a software consultant.   My life is pretty busy and i finally decided today to bite the bullet and ask for a call from Lenovo support.  Again i am told the only way to fix this is to send my laptop in for a repair.  I asked to just be able to buy a KEY - i am told that well they do not sell individual keys - they would replace the entire keyboard!  So sell me the keyboard and or send me one an i will take into best buy to have them replace it while i wait.  They cannot do that.   I live... Hello All, I have an issue with my YOGA 700 laptop when logged in multiple accounts simultaneously. Whenever an account is left logged on and the user is switched as opposed to logging off, the cpu usage ramps up very high with several RUNDLL32 processes being the culprit. I have checked the RUNDLL32 processes with Process Explorer and the command line are as follows:C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\EnableAutoRotation.dll,RunCustomMonitor The directory is as follows: C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\ The only solution I have found is restarting the laptop. The problems comes back when again more than one user is logged in. Also, the rundll32 processes only run high cpu on one account at a time and there doesn't seem to be a preference for a specific account, all of them are plagued one at a time with the problem. Disabling the Yoga Mode Control service is a fix but that breaks the mode control which is essential in this laptop. I have tried installing all the available software on the Software page foor the YOGA 700. The rundll32 processes drain the battery very fast and I can't always log off other users when they have apps open!  I have posted a screenshot of process explorer showing 2 rundll32.exe processes using 25% cpu usage each. However, sometimes up to 4 rundll32.exe processes open up and they use combined 100% cpu usage, which makes the laptop run very hot and slow. In t... Read more

Disclaimer: I received the Yoga 920 as a review loaner unit from Lenovo. All opinions are my own, nobody is paying for my review, and no one is reviewing this content before it's posted.

Left: Yoga 920 in Bronze. Right: Yoga 910 in Silver

On the surface, both the Yoga 910 and Yoga 920 look nearly identical, but in my testing, I prefer one over the other. Let's dig deeper to see the differences between the two!To get this out of the way, both machines have 1TB PCIe storage, 16GB memory, and the Yoga 910 has the 7th gen i7-7550U processor, and the Yoga 920 has the 8th gen i7-8550U processor.

Hardware & Design
Both the Yoga 910 and Yoga 920 are built out of aluminum, which gives them a high quality feel to them.  Both laptops have the keyboard integrated into the chassis, which means less keyboard flex. One thing that I find better in the Yoga 920 is the fact that it's all smooth edges around.  The Yoga 910 has pretty sharp edges which means you could scratch your surface or yourself.  The sharp edges of the Yoga 910 was a common complaint, and I'm glad they rectified it.

The Yoga 920 also has a little slit on the display lid that makes it much easier to open the lap... Read more

If so, have a look on the following post, this should show if your device has been tested with the update yet:

From what I can see, your unit does not seems to have made the list, which leads me to believe that this will be the cause of the issue, I would recommend that you revert back to the previous version of Windows, and observe if the fault still occurs or not.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.==================================================================================Did someone help you today? Thank them with a Kudo! If you find a post helpful and it answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution"!

Hey. I bought my Yoga 520-14IKB (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256gb NVMe SSD, GeForce 940MX) 2 month ago, had no problems, till last week. Now sometimes i experience such a strange behaviour. Disclosure:  I received these laptops from Lenovo as part of their advocacy program, so huge thanks to the folks over at Lenovo. I don't receive compensation for my review, and as always, all opinions are my own.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is first modern ThinkPad that I've ever owned.  I?ve been using Lenovo?s Ideapad lineup for a very long time, and while I?ve used ThinkPads in the past, the X1 Yoga will be my first personal ThinkPad that I own.  So how does it stack up to the Yoga 910?  Let?s find out! I have the i7 UHD model of the Yoga 910 and the i5 FHD model of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga.  I tried out the latest Yoga 920, but I haven?t tried the latest X1 Yoga yet? hopefully, I will!

Hardware & Design
Even though both laptops carry ?yoga? in their name, the hardware behind them is vastly different.  The ThinkPad X1 Yoga has the classic ThinkPad black design, which is made of a carbon-fiber hybrid for the top cover and a magnesium-PPS hybrid for the bottom cover.  The Yoga 910 has a similar design from the Lenovo?s Yoga lineup, with an aluminum build throughout.

The ThinkPad only comes in two colors: classic black and silver; whereas the Yoga has a whole suite of colors to choose from, such as silver, copper, bronze, and even a few exclusive designs, such as the Vibe designs for the Yoga 920 and the Star Wars themed designs for the Yoga 910.

I thought maybe it was a driver issue, but it can't be as the HP pen works.... I'm thinking it's the pen itself just getting worn down? It looks okay though but may be just a little loose... Any help / direction would be greatly appreciated!

After a clean install of Win 10 Home, I tried to reinstall the Yoga Mode Control driver from here: http://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-900-13isk2/80UE/005KC... The install ends without error, but does not confirm success either. The app does not appear to install.  This same thing happens with Lenovo Utility.

I recently bought a Yoga 720 that I'd like to upgrade the available RAM to 32 GB. The OS has been upgraded from Win 10 Home which is limited to 16 GB to Win 10 Pro which will work with 32 GB. I attempted to talk to Lenovo about the upgrade but was unable to connect to anyone who a clue and the third time that the same PDF service manual file was sent to me I gave up. Has anyone successfully transitioned to 32GB?

Hello! I recently swapped my HDD for an SSD that already had an OS on it. I can't get it to boot to the SSD. I've even tried using a Windows Deployment (Lite Touch) USB to redeploy the OS but it won't even boot from the USB. I've tried every possible combination on the BIOS settings/USB Configurations. The only thing I can get it to boot to is a Linux Ubuntu USB. Can anyone help me? I don't want to run Linux. BIOS Version: 92CN23WW (V1.03)EC Version: 92EC23WW (V1.03)CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU N3520 @ 2.16GHzSystem Memory: 4096 MBHard Disk: SanDisk SDSSDA120GWindows License: STD
