fix temporary profile for windows 7

Q: fix temporary profile for windows 7

My computer was not shutdown properly and now my profile can't be read by windows thus creating a temporary profile. How do I fix this, tutorials on this ask to edit registry keys but i don't want to do anything that might jeopardize my files in the computer. Is there a way to make my computer start normally again w/o erasing my old profile and starting a new one but with all my files?

Preferred Solution: fix temporary profile for windows 7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: fix temporary profile for windows 7

Simple answer:  No.  The fact that you have a damaged profile has already "jeapordized" your files, since you are now denied access to them and they are of no value if you cannot access them.  If you had replaced the damaged profile sooner...all might have been different.

We have users on Windows 7 Enterprise machines.  No one has a roaming profile. Users cannot install programs.  The users move around so they don't use the same machine all the time and there may be 20 profiles on one machine.  They don't
always logout but the machines are restarted once a week at least.   Occasionally we may delete profiles on the machines but this is a remote site so we seldom do.  Users primarily use remote apps. served up either by Citrix or web interface.
Little is done locally other than printing.  All machines are imaged with the same software. All users do the same thing.  One user in an office of six machines, can only login to three of the machines with a temporary profile.  She has no
profile under Users.  There is no .bak registry entry.  I cannot locate anything in the registry that points to this user.  I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SOFTWARE|MICROSOFT|WINDOWSNT|CURRENT VERSION|PROFILELIST.  There were 20 profiles but
none for this user.  No .bak profiles for her, nothing.  I found a post that suggested increasing registry size/reboot but still no clue.  This has been going on for months and she just let me know but I don't know if she called the help desk

A:Windows 7 Enterprise - User logs in with temporary profile - 3 different machines/no roaming profile?

Thanks.  She's working on the computer and does not logoff and back on quickly.  I just rechecked and there absolutely is not a .bak with her name.  On either computer.  I did find one for Temp and one for another user so now I have a
second user getting the profile issue.  I renamed that one and when the other user logged in, he got his profile.

Guess I will just re-image the computers although I'd like to figure it out but I don't have the spare time to waste and don't want my user to keep getting the temp profile.  My company won't pay for the support and frankly, in all the years I've
been in IT, I've never had MS resolve one issue for me.  Not worth paying for.  Oh well, thanks for your suggestions.  If I have time to devote to this and figure anything else out, I will post the answer.

Hello,

I am having an issue with my laptop where I am logged on to a temporary profile.  What I did was I installed plugins for virtualdub.  The next day, my screen began to rapidly change from negative to normal.  I immediately shut my computer off.  When I started it back up, some of my profile settings were changed, such as color settings and desktop background, while some were the same, such as profile picture, password, and lock screen picture.

When I logged in, I got a message that says, "You've been signed in with a temporary profile.  You can't access your files and files created in this profile will be deleted when you sign out.  To fix this, sign out and try signing in later.  Please see the event log for details or contact your system administrator."

All files on my desktop except for shortcuts have been erased (or at least are not showing) and all my applications are gone from my start menu.

Can anyone help me with this?

A:Temporary profile on Windows 8

The first thing I would try is a System Restore to a previous point in time (before the issue) if you have that option available.

My uneducated guess is that you may have downloaded more than just the virtualdub plug-ins; however, I could be wrong. Anyway, you might want to head over to the Security section of this forum and ask for some assistance to that end but be prepared to spend much time resolving your issue this way because there are many steps involved.

Also, you can take a peek at this MS thread to see if it provides any insight as well:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-system/windows-8-keeps-loading-with-temporary-profile/583abee6-645d-42a1-88da-063547c6eea0

And finally, the cure-all might be an in place reinstall. If interested, Google this phrase (without quotes) and it will lead you to the procedure:
"How to Do a Repair Install of Windows 8 without Losing Anything."

Good luck.

Hi.

So I had an update saying updates would be made before shutting down last week. Since then I've only been able to sign into temporary profiles, and have found my old profile by going to My Computer>C: etc and saving my work onto a USB.

I'm now getting a message saying 'This copy off windows isn't genuine' but I have no idea why!?

Any ideas on how I can sign into my original profile instead of temporary ones?

Thanks

I've had my Windows 8 computer for several months... it's been working really well, absolutely no problems.

But today... when I turned on my computer... I signed into my account like always (the only admin account on the computer)... and it keeps signing me into a temporary profile instead.

A balloon pops up in the corner, telling me it's a temporary account and to try again later or something.

I restarted the computer about five times... but still... it keeps taking me to a temporary account, rather than my real account.

Please help.

I cannot login to my main profile when I try to it takes quite some time and just logs me in to a temp profile and I get this message "You can not access your files and files created in this profile will be deleted when  you log off.  To fix this log off and try logging on again later.  Please see the event log or contact your system administrator for details."

I have done what many sites said to do to rename the profile using regedit and it worked only once the next time I tried logging in it said failed to log on. I then booted in safe mode and redid the renaming and now its back to where it was. I tried creating a new user account and copy/paste my stuff but it did not work at least not all I saw a folder of my videos in the new account but that's about it all my pics, music and files on my desktop did not copy over. I'm not sure if I did it the right way or not or if im infected or something wrong my my pc hopefully you guys can help me.

Hi Negotron What I suggest you to do is to back up all your personal files on an external storage media (if you have one, otherwise, create a folder directly on your C: drive or other partition), then once done, I would delete your old profile(s) (if you created more than one) and create a fresh new one and go from there. A:Windows 7 starting with a temporary profile

I have not done anything to my system. I didn't install new programms, neither I add hardware or something. I went to bed yesterday, turned my computer off and fell asleep. After a bad dream I woke up and turned my computer on. It told me something like  this: My profile could not load properly so a temporary profile was created. All data will be lost after a reboot.Anyway, I tried to solve it myself by copying everything from my old admin profile to a new one. But it didn't work properly. I can use this new profile and everything's fine, but I couldn't backup my old gargabe, such as personal data etc. So I've decided to reinstall my operating system with the newest build. I've heard it works like a charm and everything should be fine with it.Thank you for your help.

Hi, I've been having a lot of trouble with my computer and have only just sorted out a problem saying my copy of windows is not genuine (when it is) and I have been getting another problem with that.

This concerns Windows 7 logging me into a temporary profile when trying to access my main admin account.

It started off happening quite infrequently, and i was able to get onto my main account with a few system reboots.

But now I can't get into my main profile AT ALL.

If anyone can help me then that would be great

Thanks in advance!

You user profile could be corrupted or service who has loads your profile file to launch if everything working correctly after you restart your computer everything should be fine but you should scan and repair any corrupted Windows system files.
In Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 simply hold down the + X keys and select the option “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.
Execute below command:

Sfc /scannow

Hello all, hope you can solve my problem. A problem has been plaguing me where every time I turn my computer on, I'm logged into a temporary profile. This is remedied with a restart, but I'd rather not deal with the hassle. This problem arose after I did a scan with Advanced SystemCare. Needless to say, I probably won't be using it again... Hello!

I had taken apart and dusted my PC yesterday, and upon starting it back up my main profile seems to be corrupt. When I attempt to log into it, Windows places me into a temporary user instead. I have wracked the internet for solutions and tried almost everything I have come across. This includes:

-Changing the registry values for the correct profile (removing .bak) and restarting PC

-Deleting the registry value for the correct profile and restarting the PC to attempt to recreate the profile (It still logged me into a temporary)

-Copying the entire profile (without hidden user files residing in main user folder like ntuser.dat, .log, .ini) to a new profile and restarted PC

-Running a chkdsk in safemode (did not fix anything), along with a sfc/scannow afterwards

I have come to the end of my rope. I do not know or understand what needs to be done at this point to restore my profile. I desperately need all the files on my profile and drive, so I do not wish to reformat my PC.

The only next possible step I can see for myself is make a copy of the profile I am trying to save, and then delete the original from the users folder. Then I would restart the computer and try to log into that account so that it is remade, and paste the old contents of the profile into the newly made 'same' profile. Hey guys,

Yesterday, I shut down my computer. A few hours later when trying to log back in, I get logged onto a blank profile, which I assume is a temporary profile.

Curiously the ProfileImagePath string under key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-842173820-3506557639-1618326103-1004 is pointing to C:\Users\Mike_2.Mike-PC instead of C:\Users\Mike_2, which I assume is a temporary/alternate profile. (which I didn't create)

This has happened before, but usually a few restarts fixed the problem, however, that doesn't seem to be working now.

My question is, is there a way to reassociate the profile with the correct user folder? Or do I have to transfer everything over to a clean profile?

A:Solved: User profile dissasociated from account/logging onto temporary profile?

Its not an association issue, the user profile is corrupt, and is replaced by a temporary one.

Best thing to do is create a new user account, and migrate to that.

Been awhile since I last had an issue with my laptop but it seems today was the turning point. The problem is "fixed" as of right now but I have no idea why it happened and my fix does bring much comfort.

After installing update last night my computer shut down fine but after booting it up around 1 pm it opened to a temp profile after failing to open my original. I didn't get the blue screen with text stating it was unable to open my profile but a small bubble in the taskbar. After some tense moment I decided to restart and hope it fixed itself and that seems to be case as of right now.

Restarting the laptop, brought up the fact that the updates from last night were not installed and my laptop went through the process of updating. After some time it booted right up and allowed me to sign in which lasted a bit longer then usual. Checked for errors on the C drive and nothing popped up but did find profile errors in the event logs. Luckily everything was fine but after hooking up an expansion drive and beginning the process of backing up my files I noticed something new under my drives.

It seems the ESP (F) drive became visible with 246 mb of 270 mb freed up. Clicking on it showed I had no permission to do so and after some searching on the internet I was able to hide it from popping up on my desktop and under my drives. I have no idea if this is tied to my profile problem but I figured bringing it up would be important since I've never seen it.

Anyway I'm leavi... Read more

Dear experts,

For some time now, my laptop stopped giving me notifications/pop-ups when the battery is low and to plug into a power source--that seemed like a virus to me.  Then, a few days ago, while working on battery, it died and when I tried to restart, it booted into a temporary profile and keeps booting into a temporary profile.  All of my data on the HD seems intact. This did not work--when I rebooted, it merely created another .bak file and booted me again into a temporary profile

We are facing issue with some of the user accounts that wherever they login temporary profile is created. These are Domain user ID's created in AD. If the issue is there in only one desktop/laptop then we can easily troubleshoot using profile rename or deletion
from registry and other methods but the issue is happening with some of the users in all PC's.

We have tried making them login to PC's in different locations and subnets but the problem is not resolved. The ID's are created as fisrtname.lastname. If we delete and recreate those ID's with some different name like lastname.firstname for those users
then the issue gets resolved.

Hey all!

I've been experiencing stability problems on/off with my rig, but now they seem to have been stabilising (hurr durr).

I've recently bought a 1TB harddisk and 4 additional GB of Corsairs XMS3 DHX RAM, bringing me up to a total of 8GB.

Now, I tried to install 6 GB first, in tri-channel mode, and it worked fine.
When I installed the remaining two in dual dual-channel mode, however, my profile will not load, and I am given a temporary user profile. All my personal preferences are gone, including firefox bookmarks, desktop shortcuts, start menu preferences etc.

I'm posting a query to corsair as well simultaneously, but do any of you know or have a clue as to what might cause my problem? Or more importantly: how I can fix it?

I ran the memory diagnostics tool included in vista, and it told me I had a memory problem, but did not specify what.

Thanks for all help. It is much appreciated!

When trying to run Windows Easy Transfer I get an message box that says I am logged into a temporary profile and to restart computer and try again.  This happens with every user account on my computer.  Even if I create a new user, the problem is still there.  I am using Windows 7 RTM.

A:Windows Easy Transfer says I am logged into a temporary profile

Same problem - running Win7RC, I'm preparing to migrate to the production version. I think the problem is that the error message is misleading. I created a new account and still saw the message ''You're currently logged on using a temporary profile. Restart your computer and try again.'' On checking with Regedit, I found that there was an entry in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList for a temporary profile that had been created some time back. See KB947215 and KB947242. It then dawned on me that EasyTransfer will not want to run if there are _any_ temporary profiles in use as this might result in lost data. Removing the ProfileList key with the .bak suffix enabled Easy Transfer to run. If you find a key with a .bak suffix, check the ProfileImagePath subkey and make sure you have a backup copy of everything within that path unless it is in your "temp" path. I hope this helps someone. Philip

DISCLAIMER - Hello there, it has been an eventful day for my main desktop rig and I. Before I get started I will be explaining everything I have done with the PC today and in the recent few days, so this will contain information on my Windows 10 install, however I am having trouble with Windows 7 Home Premium. (This whole post will be beneficial to your suggestions as I will be explaining absolutely everything I have done up until this point that I think may be related - whether it actually end up being important or not, so please bare with me .)

About a week ago, I decided to partition my 1TB hard drive to install a nice clean Windows 7 Home Premium (I gave this 10GB originally) OS along side my current and main Windows 10 Home installation for nothing other than my personal enjoyment, I like Windows 7. I am no stranger to this and it went perfectly with no issues, both worked perfectly with the system and the boot loader worked nothing other than normally. Skip forward to this morning.

I get up and switch on my computer, like every teen on a Saturday morning and I use my Windows 10 OS, again everything is perfectly normal at this point. I decide that I needed to mark my Windows 7 partition as active when really I didn't need to touch it and it was working fine before. I had then decided that I wanted to add another 10 GB to the partitioned sector of the hard drive because I had come to find that after installation, I didn't have sufficient space to move my virtual machin... My computer has been to auto-update windows.  After an update two days ago I am given a bubble stating that I am signed in with a temporary user profile.  I am prompted to sign out, and sign back in with my user profile info.  Which, I did, but I am still being logged in with the temporary profile.  I'm trying not to panic,  but I cannot access any of my photos, documents or files.

Every time Microsoft does one of the automatic updates I end up spending hours trying to get my PC back to where it's useful again.  Historically, I have gone to the Microsoft website and updated ALL the other updates, and that has resolved the issue; the issue is usually that I can no longer browse the internet. But this is very different; it would seem that my entire computer has been erased.

Please help!

Recently my computer was freezing a lot and I had to shut it down (from the turn on/off button) and I know this is bad.
Yesterday I shut it down like this then I tried to turn it on it didn't load past the "Welcome'' screen and after some time it loaded and a message showed ''You have been logged in with a temporary profile. You cannot access your files and files created in this profile will be deleted when you log off". I tried to log-in in save mode but it did the same thing.

I was going to try ''Repair user account'' to see if it works but i can't see the ''ntuser.ini'' file? (This is about trying to copy the the files from the old account to a new one). And there are 2 ntuser.dat files one is called ntuser1.dat and the other is ntuser2.dat (or something like this) and I don't know which one to copy. Also i tried to copy all the files but it said there's not enough space.

I read some things and it said there is either not any solution or there were some things that worked for SOME people but I'm not very good at computers and in these solutions it said to delete some thing but I'm scared to lose some things in my old account or to ruin my computer!

When I log in the new account i created or when in the temporary account I CAN'T connect to internet. My internet is with cable and before when i start my computer i was clicking on the connections icon (in the right corner of start menu) and then i would click to connect. I had 2 option one is my internet pro... Read more

The battery is no good on my Gateway laptop, so computer will only run a few minutes when unplugged.  I accidently kicked plug loose from wall and didn't realize it; I saw computer was shutting down due to low battery and I quickly plugged it back in, but it was already powering down.  When I re-booted it, it had to run through all the disk-scans and then when it finally booted, it was under temporary profile and not mine.  I tried to follow directions on Microsoft help forum (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile) to fix corrupted user profile, but their step-by-step instructions don't match up with my computer.

In particular, MS tells me to create a new profile and copy my old profile to the new one.  I created new profile, but it tells me to copy all files except the following: Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log, and Ntuser.ini.  On mine, there are 2 Ntuser.dat.log files and I don't have Ntuser.ini.  The other thing I'm not understanding is once I copy them, I can't figure out how to move it all to the new profile.

P.S.  I also tried to change the corrupted profile settings using this method: http://www.sysprobs.com/fix-temporary-profile-windows-7 but had no luck there either.  When logged off/on had the same temporary settings as before.  Plus, the computer is running incredibly slow and locks up a lot when on the internet.  Anytime I have to restart it has to run through... Hi. When one of my family members goes to sign in, it says "preparing windows." Then, once they are logged in, it says "You've been signed in with a temporary profile. You can't access your files, and files created in this profile will be deleted when you sign out. To fix this, sign out and try signing in later." The problem is still persisting a day later. Anyone know how to fix this? Also, if I turned off sync settings, would that prevent this from happening?

Thanks,

This has happened a total of three times, and it's bugging me.

The first time was maybe a month ago, when I attempted to shut down my computer and it said that there were some processes running and that I'd have to "Force Restart." I did so, and when I logged in, my desktop came up looking like I had just installed it, and the little box in the attachment came up.

This has happened two other times recently, but on startup. I'll log in to my account as usual, but instead of "Welcome," it says "Preparing your desktop," and takes forever to load. Then it'll do as I described earlier.

Any idea how to to fix this?

Help...  this happened again
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/524159/windows-update-messed-something-up/#entry3287652
I turned my computer on this morning and it said it was "preparing your desktop"
It NEVER says that.  And it logs me into a temporary profile.

And JUST like last time, when I got to my desktop, some items are gone.
Last time this happened it was right after an update.  I looked, and no updates happened within the last day or two.  Definitely not when I shut down last night.
And last time this happened, I asked for help here and never figured out just what happened or if it was possible to get back whatever disappeared.  I looked things up and I did not find much help on the internet anywhere.
I found someone suggesting doing a system restore.  I was not even able to do that.
There's a part of me that thinks about reformatting my hdd but I have SOOOO many pictures and things I'd have to back up externally(which I know, I should do anyway) but that's so much work....  downloading and installing all sorts of programs, setting them up, getting things just the way I had them... so much work.
But more than that...  that wont help me to figure out WHY this happened and if there's any way to figure out which items disappeared...
I hate when computers do things I can't figure out...  unfortunately... that happens......

This was happening to me as well for a while. I would enter my password, hit enter and it would load into a temp profile instead of the one I logged into. I noticed if I clicked the arrow instead of hitting enter it would log in fine. I ended up doing a fresh re-install on an SSD upgrade before ever resolving this issue myself though.

Hi, I bought my laptop about 2 years ago and have never had any problems with it. It is a Toshiba Equium L40-10Z, and uses windows vista.

For about a month now it randomly closes Internet explorer and says that it has "stopped working". However this wasn't very frequently.

2 days ago I turned my laptop on and tried to log into my profile and entered my password as usual. The welcome page stayed on for about a minute instead of the usual 5-10 seconds, and then the page changed to say that it was "setting up my desktop" or something very similar to this. This then stayed on for about another minute or so. When it finally loaded up it was put on a "temporary profile" with only a few of my usual programs showing on my desktop. A pop up in the bottom corner told me that I could not be logged into my profile and so I was put on a temporary profile and that any changes that I made would not be saved.

I can still use my laptop for things such as accessing the internet however I cannot access any of my files, many of which have important college work in.

I have downloaded music from the internet from sites such as myspace and thisis50, but I regualarly run scans using norton anti virus, and there is only ever 1 tracking cookie that has been there all the time, that has a low risk warning.

I have never done anything like this before but I searched for help and found the HijackThis tool, I have ran the scan and saved the "log" and I thin... Read more

hi guys,

whilst messing around trying to change the permissions on an external hard drive, i irresponsibly executed some command or other i found on google. i was supposed to execute it on the external drive but unfortunately i didn't change the drive in command prompt.

problem is - i dont have a clue what the command was!

and now i have the dreaded problem of a TEMPORARY PROFILE every time i log in.

i have found other threads which suggest backing up everything from that profile and then deleting it and reinstating it.

unfortunately - i can't do this,for a couple of reasons -

A. for some reason, permissions on my system are completely messed up. i can't take any files from the folder with the (TRUE) administrator account because i don't have the permissions to,

B. i have a 120gb HDD, 110GB of which is the files for my profile - music, videos, etc. i have nowhere to copy them to!

if anybody has any suggestions or ways to help me i would be extremely appreciative.

the only thing i know about the command is that it was something related to changing an ACL (access control list). looks like i've altered the access to my profile, so that my profile cannot access it, if that makes sense!

i'll post this now and then i'll scour google to try and find the command which i typed.

PS - i've tried system restore, to no avail

A:temporary profile - help!

edit -

i found the command which i entered -

cacls * /G Ant:F /T

("Ant" being the username of the profile)

**EDIT**

backed up the files onto the hard drive root, deleted the account, re-created the account and now i cannot transfer the original users/ant/* folders, into the new users/ant folder, even though all of the permissions are set correctly.

can anyone help me with this?

when i try to copy, using either administrator, or the new "Ant" account, it says -

"You need permission to perform this action", and gives the options "Try again", "Skip" and "Cancel".

**FINAL EDIT**

sorry to waste anyones time, i managed to fix this, i changed ownership of all of the files to administrator, moved them back into /users/Ant, set the new account as administrator, and then transferred ownership from there. For some reason before i took ownership with administrator account, it wouldnt let me take ownership with "Ant", so i had to do it the long way.

hopefully my little self-discussion may help someone else along the lines

ciao!

I have trouble with my "temporary" profile. Every time I log on, I get signed in with a "temporary" profile, where I lose my background setting, and I am missing most of my apps on the Start button, such as the Netflix app, Wordament, and pretty much, most of my apps. I get stuck with a blue background setting, instead of the background profile that I have created, and I always have to log on to Google, YouTube, Facebook, or any other website that I visit each time I visit them, instead of automatically having the computer save my passwords for me so that I don't have to continually log in. I feel that it is a hassle, and I would like to have my old background profile back. I clicked under Settings, and it says that I am logged on with a "temporary" profile, and roaming options are currently unavailable. In other words, I would like to sync my settings---I want to change my profile back to the way it normally was, where I had all of my apps. Please help. Thanks.
