Preferred Solution: Win10 AU on a X201?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When contacting microsoft, was tod for the need to update BIOS by contacting Lenovo, but can't find anything to update x201 BIOS (currently 6QET61WW 1.31) for win 10 pro. I have updated Win10 to my Thinkpad X201. It is quite old win10 from 2016 or so. The problem is that VGA output (and Funktion-F7 keyboard combination for switching between external and internal displays) do not work. Display adapter driver in device manager is "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". I tried to install the original X201 display driver for windows 7 in compability mode but "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" will not change to "Intel HD Graphics" what is should be. I have disabled windows 10 automatic updates because this mainly a computer for performing live music and I cannot risk windows update messing it. So all I need is a display driver which would fix VGA output. Any suggestions what to do?

Welcome to the forum!

Well, it's not that difficult but you need to disassemble a lot of parts. This is fairly easy to do if you closely follow the instructions of Lenovo's Hardware Maintenance Manual, which you can download from here: click me!

Hi,
My disk contains 5 partitions:
part1 = ntfs-win10 free upgrade of win home premium (primary)
Part2 = ntfs-win7 home premium (primary)
Part3 = ext3-Extended (logical)
Part4 = ext3-LM rafaela (extended)
Part5 = swap (extended)
This setup worked good.

Part2 win7 got buggered, and reinstalled (nvidia chip-set melt down during win7 boot). The MB was replaced.

I can no longer get to win10 boot Part1. Booting to Part1 or Part2 results to booting the newly installed win7. Rafaela boot did not change: still working.

How can I reclaim my win10 boot? I can't upgrade for free anymore so I'm hoping there's a way to work with what's there.

Thanks,
Keith

Hi everyone,

 - Start with Vista 64-bit SP2 on PC with two drives - OS on Disk0 - working fine for years
 - Downloaded Win10 64-bit English-International ISO image from MS on 23 March
 - Installed on Disk1 as Home edition on 24 March
All works fine with dual boot Vista/Win10

 - Win10 Update arrived on 25 March (I think Win10 Cumulative Upate, but can't be sure)
 - Update installed with Shut Down on 25 March
Now fails at dual-boot time:
  PC/Device needs to be repaired
  Required device isn't connected or can't be accessed
  Error code:  0xc000000e

Fortunately F9 boots Vista correctly.  I conclude that either the dual-boot is messed up OR it recognises that the Win10 OS is messed up.
I'm a hesitant to go further without expert advice as I'd hate to mess up the Vista possibilty ! ! !

I've just "recovered" an S400 running Win10 and it restored Win8!  My guess is that it was originally running Win8 and then the owner (a friend who managed to install some viruses!) used the free upgrade to Win10; but the Lenovo recovery system didn't upgrade what needed to be recovered and just went back to whatever was on the laptop when it shipped. So now that we're back at Win8, what do I need to do to get back to Win10 again.  I was pleased that Lenovo had the clever recovery system but am now sad that it doesn't cope with upgrade properly :-(. P.S. If Lenovo are reading this, please add some warnings that this might happen to you online instructions!

Just got a P70 XEON and just need to vent some frustrations about it. It could be so perfect but it is not! 1. Display Drivers / Non-Optimal Optimus - crashes when moving video windows around. Did such a bad crash Win10 disabled BOTH Intel and NVidia Driver... and reverted to Win10 Basic Video driver.... 2. Display Drivers - if built in LCD is not the PRIMARY Windows display - you can't play full screen video on other screens 3. Workstation Dock - that was really designed by someone who does not use MULTIPLE DISPLAYs. Can we please have 3-5 independent monitor outputs on the next dock please? 4. My Windows install will not show parts of the "New settings panels" - I think mine used to be a Win7 inplace upgraded to Win10. Tried every trick in the book to fix it but no go so far. Then went on to try and download recovery media - but that service is CLOSED for Maintenance FROM LENOVO for the entire weekend. Great thanks... 5. NVidia activity display / task bar icon - rarely works... Apart from the long road ahead on reinstalling Win10 - I do like the P70 - but it could have been designed by better designers for REAL multi screen usage. All the above rants are only about things I have batteled to fix.... Everything else (like no sound on first installation) I have managed to solve. Rest I have spent MANY hours trying to fix. All drivers/firmware etc. are LATEST available from Lenovo. /rant /vent over for now.

Hi,

I have the upgrade from win7 retail to Win10 x 32 on 1 drive and have installed from DVD Win 10 x 64 on another drive as a dual boot while I set up the 64. Both work fine.

I have an Active Product key for the 32 but the 64 keeps wanting me to Activate.

As I am not going to use the 32 anymore and it was from a retail Win7, can O use the Prod key from the 32 into the 64?

Thanks

A:Can I use win10 32 prod key in win10 64 in same machine?

This is unclear. Upgrades do not get a product key but a digital licence tied to hardware id. It is irrelevant if OS is 32bit or 64bit.

If the 64bit version did not activate, then you have a mismatch eg you must install same version home/pro and additionally edition (normal, EU N or SL single language version) as the upgraded version.

Hello,

I received the free win 10 upgrade from an invitation to reserve the upgrade. The other day, a Ransomware hit me, and though I believe I may have immediately tracked & deleted all affected files I could find, I hardly believe I could be so skilled as to be successful.

I had this happen last year, and ended up formatting the unit, and reloading Win 7. I don't want to have to go back to 7, but how do I get another Win 10? Is there a key I need to find & save? A free site that I can get a copy on a flash drive to load from? Any help would be appreciated. I have no clue how to proceed since it's an online download, and once formatted, the unit won't be able to get online without the OS

Thanks

you can download the newest build of windows 10 > http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/windows10

boot from the setup media - remove every partition (wipe) the HDD

and clean install widows 10

since you already had win7 and windows 10 on that PC - if asked for product key - just skip that screen

In my case, I never see the RDP connection dialog that allows selecting the audio. When I click "Connect" from on the VM from within "Hyper-V Manager", it displays the VM terminal window. The only actions are to "Start" or "Checkpoint" the VM.

On the VM host, both the "Enhanced Session Mode Policy" and "Enhanced Session Mode" are checked. On the VM guest, "Remote Desktop Services" is running.

I would like to upgrade my OS from win10 home to win10 pro. As my pc is still under warranty I assume that I have to go through Dell to do this.
I have tried Sales who referred me to Tech Support, who the referred me back to Sales!!
All I need to know is can I do this, where do I download the key/installer and how much is it?
Any ideas?

A:How do I upgrade my OS from win10 home to win10 pro?

Normally, you go to the Microsoft store and purchase an upgrade license.  The upgrade is not a new install, but an upgrade from within Win 10.
After that is done, you will have a License registered for the Pro version and from then on you will be able to do a clean install of the Pro version.
Once you do that, the Dell recovery options may not work correctly, but I haven't actually tried it.  I have use the Win 10 recovery drive to go back to factory specs.

I have a X201 thinkpad that I am trying to update a bit.  I purchased a new samsung evo 860 500gb ssd drive.  I tried to put fresh install of win 10 onto it (boot from usb stick) but was getting media test failure errors and constant restart loop. I took the ssd out and put it into my even more ancient X61s and managed to load windows onto the drive with no problems.  The ssd runs fine in the X61s.  On the X201 I updated the bios to the latest version (1.40).  I tried to put the ssd into the computer but it just keeps loading the window symbol, saying preparing to repair and then it reboots.  What am I missing here?  I compared the bios settings on the 2 computers and they looked the same for most options? Thanks for any help Unrelated question, should I update bios of X61s?  What would be most recent version?

Hi,one reason of issue might be the frequencies of new RAM sticks and CPU i5-520M in your laptop. That processor supports DDR3-800/1066 memory types only. Who knows how SPD feature on the stick regulates the work on lower frequency. Another reasons might be the RAM sticks CAS latency and timings. There is a chance the new memory is too fast for x201. Look at the such parameters of Samsung stick (in CPU-Z, for example).

I have a lenovo thinkpad x201 from 2011. I had it sitting 3 years. 1 year ago, i got it out of the attic. It is a really fast laptop for some heavy office use, lightweight gaming and having multiple tabs open in the browser. I use it every day. I replaced the HDD with an SSD and it became blazing fast. It has a small problem with the fan though. Its having a hard time running. My laptop would normaly be on 60 degress celcius under normal use and hit 80 degress under really heavy use but after 4 months it would reach 70-80 degress under normal use and hit 90-95 degress under heavy use. But things got worse. After 1 month my laptop would reach 80-85 degress celsius under normal use and hit 95 even when i tried to open google chrome with some tabs open. Sometimes, when i was watching a video, my laptop would reach 100 degress. I couldn't play any videogames because my laptop would fry itself. My laptop would shut down immediately when it hit so high temperatures. After that, i replaced the problematic fan, dusted the motherboard(there wasn't any dust though) and reapplied the thermal paste. Things got much better. Under normal use it would reach 60-70 degress and reach 80-85 degress under heavy use. But after 2 months things got bad again. Now my laptop reaches 65-70 degress under normal use and reach 85-93 under heavy use. Things are not as bad as before but i'm still getting angry when it reaches 93 degress because the CPU clocks are lowered and my LAPTOP lags for about 2... Read more

Can anyone give a definitive answer as to whether or not the X201 has a top or top and bottom roll cage? The current tabook states:Compared to the X201, the X201s has ..., and roll cage in display cover. The tabook makes no mention of a roll cage for the X201, so together the implication is clear: the X201 has no roll cage. Except most of the reviews of the X201 (specifically not the X201s) claim it does have a roll cage (some say top and bottom).  And on Lenovo's website, it states here:Next-generation ThinkPad roll cage on X201, X201s, X301 and X200s Note the inclusion of the X201 in the list. So, which is it? The other day, I had to reboot my X201 (normally it just goes to sleep). On boot up, it complained about the ubiquitous "fan error". Before reading about the "esc" escape, I was able to spin the fan manually to get past the error. Eventually, even that stopped, but fortunately I read about the "esc" trick. I was able to buy a replacement third party fan, but it never spun, and still got the fan error. Thinking it was a bad fan, I bought another third party fan from someone else, and got the same results. Any ideas on what to do next? Do I need to have a real Lenovo fan (FRU 60Y5422) because it has special sensor (like ink cartridages)? Or is there something wrong on the motherboard? Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone, I bought myself a 9-Cell Battery off ebay for my X201. I got it for 50?, it said it was used but had 99% capacity remaining. It arrived today and looks very good, as good as new, but definetly feels geniune.Whats odd is that it doesn't have the production date sticker on it, it looks to have been peeled off.Also, in the lenovo Vantage software it reads a firmware version 0000-0000-0000-0000, and when I tried updating the battery firmware with the lenovo battery firmware update tool, i got an error saying, the attached battery could not be read. And whats the most interesting is that lenovo vantage reads a cycle count of 189, which is impossible because the full charge capacity is still 91Whh, which is very close to the original 94Wh and a battery with 189 charging cycles would be pretty much dead.Can someone, preferably a Lenovo Official, tell me if this battery is counterfeited or not? Is it maybe an original case but someone changed out the battery cells itself?I attached a photo of the label on the battery as well as the lenovo vantage battery readout. Hope someone can help me out here

I am posting this in case it is of use to others:I have a refurbished X201 which worked OK when I got it but now the loudspeakers have stopped working.  The headphone jack output is OK.I dismantled the machine and discovered that there was a "fur" of steel filing particles around the cones of both loudspeakers (the speakers are located just inside the front edge of the machine adjacent to the lid catch).   Blowing out the filings with compressed air (away from the laptop!) fixed the problem completely.   [Amazing how completely a small deposit of filings can stop the speaker operation.]I have now glued in place thin gauze across the small grills below the speakers to stop any further ingress.  So be aware that the speaker magnets can draw up iron swarf through the grill holes if you are using the tablet in a workshop environment.Hope this is of use to others.

Hey guys I want to update my laptop RAM Lenovo ThinkPad X 201 3680PW9  to. But I will have ordered via the Internet so it would be almost impossible to be retained or invoiced if it does not work. I want to know what is the best option to upgrade the RAM 8 GB (2X4GB) or 12 GB (1X4GB+1X8GB)?What is the best RAM brand compatible with this model ? Thanks alot

A:want to upgrade thinkpad x201 ram?

Max supported by this serie is 2x 4GB RAM, a 8GB module will not work.

You'd need SODIMM modules DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) or DDR-10600 (DDR3-1333). DDR3-12800 will most probably not work (I never managed to get one working in mines)

Stick to well known brands like:

Samsung
Elpida
Kingston (but avoid the "Value RAM" series)
Hynix
Crucial
Corsair (but avoid the "Value Select" series)
A-Data
