OTA TV Content Protection with Media Center?

Q: OTA TV Content Protection with Media Center?

I have two systems, one running Windows 7, the other running Windows 8. They have the same motherboards, processors and tv tuner cards (Hauppauge HVR-2250).

In Windows 7 I can see all my local stations and the guide data for those. So I can record the OTA (over the air) content.

In Windows 8 w/Media Center, I can see and record all the stations, except one. On this one station, I cannot see the guide data and cannot record any content. I can see the content if I go to live TV using the tuner card.

The station changed their transmitter in November and advised everyone using the OTA signals to rescan for the new transmitter. This channel, a local CBS affiliate, also shows up in the series 9000 internet channels I see in Media Center, but have not yet been able to access.

So, does anyone know the current state of OTA content protection and if this station might be using it? I can find no other reason for the blocked guide data.

Preferred Solution: OTA TV Content Protection with Media Center?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Four years ago when I got my Dell Dimension 8400 with Media Center I quit taping shows, movies etc that I normally and used my Media Center to do the job. Mostly I use the taped programs so I can watch as I please and some I have recorded later on CD (Specials). Recently I bought a laptop and hooked it and the Dell up to a network. Then I can use the internet and watch the programs I have recorded in the front room with my wife using my laptop. The last few days I ran into a movie I recorded from the AMC chanel. It works fine on my Dell and had worked on the laptop. This one movie which I wanted to play in the front room on the laptop gives me the message "Restricted Content. Restrictions set by the broadcaster or originator of the content prohibits playback of the program on this computer". I had already started to watch it on the laptop but was interupted several times. Is there some setting that causes this?. It plays fine on the Dell.

Media Center recognizes copy protection on recorded TV. You can record and play a TV movie in Media center, but you cannot burn a DVD copy. You also cannot open, edit and save Media Center recorded movies in Movie Maker. Movie Maker only imports the commercials before the movie starts then stops. Shows like local news programs are fine, but who wants to save those? Media Center's DVR-MS files of movies are too large to copy to a data DVD to save and remove. (I haven?t looked at lowering the recording quality yet.)

I?d like to trim the ends off of DVR movie recordings and edit out commercials. I don?t intend to distribute these to anybody, but I would like to make a DVD that I could watch on any player in my house, not just the Media Center computer where the movie was recorded.

In the days of VHS taping we could do this. There must be a way to do it now. It is probably even legal under fair use or if not, it should be. I hope Microsoft reconsiders their copy protection scheme. Meanwhile are there any suggestions?

A:Media Center DVR TV Copy Protection

When i want to keep programs i have recorded to watch later i convert them cos i don't have space to keep them in the massive format WMC uses. I use a program called DVRMSToolbox which converts the DVR-MS file to MPEG-2 and from there you can use another program to convert to avi etc or trim bits out. Like i said i use it for shrinking the size of recordings cos i think 800mb for a half hour program is ridiculous.

I needed to reinstall 8.1 Pro over my OS to fix a damaged Windows file system. The performed procedure fixed my system but removed my Media Center, which was payed for years ago when i upgraded to Win 8.1 Pro w/ Media Center from Win 8.0 Pro w/ Media Center.
I had to purchase it then, even though i already had it prior to the upgrade, and so i do not feel i should have to pay for it once again, especially since i saved the Product Key the second time!

Hello everyone. So I just got the Xbox 360 COD special edition. I'm checking out all my features on the Xbox. There's an option to somehow connect your computer to your Xbox. The requirement is to go through the Media Center. Well, first time starting up the Media Center on my computer, and I'm not able to get the Media Center to open. I receive an error right on startup of the program. It ends up generating a crash report, and closes. I've take 2 screenshots of the error. The first screenshot is of the first error that comes up upon opening the Media Center. The second screenshot is of another error I get when I choose to cancel instead of clicking ok on the first error. I thought getting the most information to you guys would be the best.

I run Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2005 Service Pack 3.

Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks a lot

A new variant of the ACCDFISA Protection Center ransomware has been released called Malware Protection. The malware developers target Windows servers and appear to hack them in order to install the software. Once the Malware Protection ransomware is installed, it will lock you out of computer and create password-protected RAR archives out of your data that you can no longer access unless you pay a $300 ransom.

When installed, the Malware Protection ransomware will scan your computer for all files using certain file extensions and will use the command line RAR program to turn them into a password protected RAR archive. These files will be renamed with the .aes extension and are supposed encrypted with the AES encryption. You will then be prompted to pay a ransom in order to get the decryption key to restore your files. The decryption key starts with aes987156 and then the password for the RAR files is appended to it. The decrypt.exe program will read through the list of encrypted files and extract them to the proper location using the RAR password. In the past version of this malware, there have been some cases reported that the decrypt process actually deleted the files, so once you have the RAR password it is suggested that you use a manual method restore the files. A manual method using a batch file can be found in the How to remove and decrypt the ACCDFISA Protection Program guide.

The files that this infection installs can be found in the following locations:

I was going to install Vista on a new build until I read an article about the "premium content protection" built into it. The article claimed that even legitimately bought music may get its license corrupted, self-destruct or play poorly. (It seemed like it was all part of a nefarious money-making venture and control plan by Microsoft.) I hate to take one article's word for it, so does anyone know what's really up with Vista's "Premium Content Protection"?

So for some background I basically stream music, pictures and video content from my computer to an Xbox 360 in the lounge room for my family to enjoy. This has worked for quite a long time with Windows 7.

I installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview today and got settled in with it and indexed my libraries with Windows Media player so this could resume. But to my dismay this doesn't seem to work in Windows 8.

I have each folder and hard drive shared on windows for network use, I have a little experience from LANs in this area. I have enabled all streaming options in WMP that I know of and the entirety of my library has been fully indexed. This is WMP 12 and everything I possibly know of is up to date.

I haven't got the Homegroup feature active as I never had to use this before.

The only other thing I have noticed that has changed is this. A little green icon that in windows 7 would appear on top of the xboxs, I'm assuming this means something.

On the Xbox end it used to display the Libraries such as 'Recorded TV', 'Music', 'TV Shows', 'Movies' and other things but now when I try to access video content it gives me a folder called 'Videos' which contains nothing.

Does anybody know of any solutions?

Compared with some I've read, my issue may seem trivial, but, whenever I use Windows Media Center to play music, and click to activate the Visualizations, a gray box attaches itself to the bottom of the screen, with the album title inside.

There is no visualization playing. I can see the albums when looking at the library, and everything else seems to work ok, but this is annoying.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello so i'm just looking over my bluetooth settings and i noticed an option that i'm not aware of... under the audio tab in settings there's a option that says "connect to an audio device only if it supports SCMS-T content protection"
What does this mean and should i have the box checked or unchecked?
Running Windows 7, 64-bIt

A:In bluetooth settings... What is SCMS-T content protection?

Hi Star_Slight Looks like it have something to do with copy protection, file integrity and maybe the copyright of a file.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Copy_Management_Systemhttps://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/43920/~/what-is-scms-t-content-protection-method%3FTrying to understand what it means right now but it's quite confusing. From what I do understand right now, if you leave it checked, there might be connection issues with some devices, if they aren't SCMS-ready, so I would leave it unchecked.

I have volunteered to help someone open their own internet cafe and he has sent me on a mission to find software that will keep people from accessing pornographic web pages while still being able to play the online game. Aside from that he also wants virus protection software to keep the computers clean. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good software packages that can do this and preferably one that can do both. Ideally, we are looking for something that has a server software version that can update and manage the computers definitions remotely instead of having to walk around and update each computer manually. These computers will be running Windows XP.

I have also heard of firewalls that can do some incredible stuff. If you know of any good hardware option for filtering pornography that could work too as long as its not too difficult to learn to use. I personally don't know the specific names of any software or hardware options and just need to be pointed in the right direction.

A:Need Content Filtering / Virus Protection software and hardware

G'Day Jerry,

I recommend AVG [not the Free version], as they have Server versions available with a Firewall that is unintrusive, but highly effective.

Have a look at this.....

As a matter of interest, I purchased the Professional single version of AVG two years ago, and have just renewed AVG with Firewall for the 2 computers here at home, as I trust AVG to do its job [another two year licence, and its worth the investment too].....others might disagree with me and say Norton is better; however, Norton is very resource and RAM hungry next to AVG.

Executive Summary-----------------Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of core OS elements in order toprovide content protection for so-called "premium content", typically HD datafrom Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sources. Providing this protection incursconsiderable costs in terms of system performance, system stability, technicalsupport overhead, and hardware and software cost. These issues affect notonly users of Vista but the entire PC industry, since the effects of theprotection measures extend to cover all hardware and software that will evercome into contact with Vista, even if it's not used directly with Vista (forexample hardware in a Macintosh computer or on a Linux server). This documentanalyses the cost involved in Vista's content protection, and the collateraldamage that this incurs throughout the computer industry.http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.txt

On my main Windows 7 Ultimate Desktop I have the latest NVIDIA drivers and the latest version of Silverlight and whenever I try to watch a Stream from Amazon I get error 6036 "Your system does not meet content protection requirements".

It quite clearly does, since I have an MSI N470GTX and a Samsung S23A70D monitor running on Dual Link DVI at 120Hz. Both obviously support HDCP and I've deleted the "mspr.hds" file that is USUALLY located in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady", however because my C drive is an SSD I put my entire User Profiles on E, so in my case it's "E:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady".

There are a number of methods for fixing this according to the internet although none that I've tried has worked as yet. People said that the file can often get corrupted when upgrading from an older version of Silverlight so people have deleted it and redownloaded it and got their Netflix Stream back again, in my case it got created when I first tried to stream a video, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Silverlight with no luck, and I've tried plugging in my HDTV on HDMI.

None of these have worked, and the only thing that I've not tried is installing an older version of Silverlight, and plugging in my monitor with HDMI instead of DVI on the off chance that is the problem. Ironically my Dad can play the streams on a Vista machine with an AMD Quad core CPU and on board Graphics, however the monitor on that computer uses VGA as ... Read more

I've built a VM in Hyper-V to deploy to five PCs, but when I go to my Office 365 admin page using IE11: I'm unable to see the page content:

As you can see, the page has loaded, but everything below the black header bar is not showing, neither is the tab bar that should run vertically down the left of the page.

I thought this was a Hyper-V problem, but going back to an earlier point in the build shows it's fine.  In fact it's okay up to the point just before running SysPrep.

My next Checkpoint is after SysPrep and first OOBE boot, taken at the point where the 'Hi there' screen prompts you to confirm regional settings:

At this point, if instead of completing the OOBE set-up, I press Clt+Shift+F3 to enter Audit Mode once more, I'm logged on as the built-in Administrator account and the problem's not there. If, however, I do complete the OOBE set-up and log on as
my user account (admin), the problem's there.  So something's happening between the start of SysPrep and first user logon, but I don't know what it is or how to fix it.

I'm not sure that entering Audit Mode again after running SysPrep undoes any or all of the changes specified in my Answer File (it's a pretty simple one) so I don't know if it proves anything, but I've tried running Sysprep on a basic VM without the '/unattend'
switch to see if it's the same, but SysPrep failed.

Hello, I bought a new HP TouchSmart IQ506 today and have been trying to get windows media player to play ogg files. I tried the xiph.org ogg for both 32 and 64 bit and neither of them worked. I also tried the latest ffdshow tryouts and the normal ffdshow package. WIndows media player will not import them into the library and it won't play them if I try to open them individually. Also, the TouchSmart software won't recognize them either and has no manual way to add music files as far as I know. You can either choose the "TouchSmart library" option or the "iTunes library" option. I installed all of those filters by being under an admin account, right clicking on the installer and choosing the "run as adminastrator" option. What is going on, has Microsoft blocked use of the codecs with the latest updates or something or is this all an issue with 64 bit? Thank you.

A:Media playback in Vista 64 bit media center editon; I am using an HP TouchSmart IQ506

Are you sure that ffdshow contains a decoder for Vorbis .ogg files. WMP by default only contains codecs for windows media files.

I would try K-lite codecs or Vobis codecs from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/Vorbis_Ogg_ACM_download.htm

You might also try vlc media player from here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/. It has bult-in codecs for just about everything unlike WMP.

You can add Video folders on the micro SDXC to your Video's Library in Windows 8.

Then when you set up Media Center browse to the Library where the video files reside and you will then be able to play all of the video files which reside in your Video's Library from Media Center.

Shawn's tutorial on adding folders or drives to the Library's should be helpful.

Hey guys, I was just checking out the C:\WINDOWS\Media folder, and I found all of the normal sounds for Win. XP, plus 3 midi files called flourish, onestop, and town... They appear to just be tunes and jingles put together in midi formats, and I've never heard them ever. What is the purpose of them?

A:C:\WINDOWS\Media Content

I think those are just some easter eggs Microsoft left there. They may have been part of some tour/demo features on previous versions of Windows (like the one you can find in start menu => all programs => accessories).

I have a couple of problems that I've been beating my head against the past week or so and while at least on the Media Center problem it seems I've gained a tiny bit of headway, I haven't found anything on the embedded video problem. I'm very proficient with computers and fixing issues, I do so for a living and have for years, so I'm no dummy but these 2 issues are being incredibly difficult, and I'm sure with it being a new OS isn't helping matters much either. Lets start with my setup:

Core2Duo e6600
eVGA 8800GTS 320MB
Vista Ultimate 64 bit
All the latest and greatest patches and drivers

Problem #1 - Media Center - Used to be when I fired up Media Center, and went to Library Setup, it would crash the Media Center program saying "Media Center has quit working and will close now" or something similar and that was it. I was also having an issue with Windows Media Player 11 also crashing but right upon firing it up, and also H264 video files in Media Player Classic running too fast. However, after messing around with different ways and versions of K-Lite Codec Pack and FFDShow I finally got it to where all my videos now work great in Media Player Classic, and Windows Media Player 11 now doesn't crash, and Media Center no longer dies with an error, but now instead when I go to Add Library or try to play a sample video, it comes up with some error about my video software not being installed correctly and to try reinstalling Media Center if possibl... Any clues?

I've been trying to track down why this happens for a awhile now...

I have my "main" Vista x64 PC that has all my media. I then have a Vista x32 PC that's hooked up to my TV and I use Vista Media Center on that one to access all my shared media on from the x64 PC. This is all done over my wireless "G" network. The router and x32 Vista MCE are only about 20ft away from each other and signal strength is maxed out all the time.

When I'm watching videos, VistaMCE with pause randomly.... the picture will freeze and the sound will stop. This lasts from one second to 15 seconds or more... when it kicks back in... the sound will pick up where it left off, but the video will "fast forward" until it reaches the point it should have been at had it not paused... the video then goes slow-motion until the audio catches up again. This is very annoying.

VistaMCE menus also do this.... the menus will pause and if I keep pressing buttons when the menus start working again all the button presses will be used in fast forward.

I can fix this by reformatting my VistaMCE x32 PC and reinstalling... but the fix only lasts for about a week before it starts up again. I've tried reformatting my main X64 PC before and this doesn't fix the problem at all... and I've also tried changing wireless channels and done other network troubleshooting and everything points to the VistaMCE PC having the issues.

It almost seems like a cache issue, as if the PC caches a small am... Read more

A:Vista Media Center, Media pauses randomly...

it sounds like the usual graphics driver bug - I get random slow downs where the frame rate drops and the sound stutters so it sounds like a similar problem. I would try updating your drivers.

I installed Windows 8, and now avi files look like poo when played through Windows Media Center on my PC or X-box. The same .avi file looks great when Windows Media Player is used though.... I was using Windows 7 before the "upgrade" and Media Center worked just fine on my PC and X-box.
Example of what I'm talking about:

Does anyone have a clue why the same damned file looks so different between two Windows programs.....and how I can fix this? We preferred using Media Center on the X-box before this "upgrade"...

I have Vista Home Premium and am trying to run "TVersity Media Server" to share videos to my XBOX 360. From the help screens for the application, I noticed that Windows Media Sharing must be disabled, or the 360 will not see TVersity server at all. I have Windows Media Center (included with Vista Premium). I believe I have found the option to disable sharing in "Network and Sharing Center". However, the "CHANGE" button doesn't do anything! I can click it, but it doesn't do anything! Any ideas? This is pretty much a clean install of Vista. Thanks!

HI Guys.

I have been trying to repair a friends laptop which is XP SP2.
I do not pretent to be an expert at antivirus and malware, but I have few clues, and tried to remove most of the infections for my friend.
I removed NOD32 anti-virus from the machine, as it was 2006, and would not update automatically. (not without some extra cash $$$)
I then downloaded AVG 8.0 free and installed. After running it, some 32 potencial virus infections were removed.
I installed spybot 1.6 and ad-aware 2008 and updated defs, then ran these as well.
I nailed most of the spyware and malware, but this 'PC Protection Center 2008' was stubborn, and was mutating and spawning all the time.
SpyDoctor 6.0 was useless, and came up with "Spydoctor cannot operate in this environment and needs to close"
Spyhunter was also a great tool, but although it found the infection, would not remove it without some more cash $$$.
I removed both of these.
Finally I found Malwarebytes anti-malware, which found the infection and removed it for free.!!! At least I think so.
I then ran CCleaner and a couple of others and hope I have nailed the problem infections once and for all.
I have followed the 5 step thing, and have run the panda anti-virus scan.
Another computer friend told me about this "HiJackThis" program.
So I would really appreciate it if someone could run their eye over the log report and tell me if I am clean here.
I would like to install XP SP3, but would like to be... Read more

Yesterday I was trying to repair a friends computer that had a possible infection of PC Protection Center 2008. Let me list the basic details of what I see occuring.

Wallpaper on desktop was hijacked and set to a active desktop wallpaper displaying a blue and yellow advertisement that says the following, "Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity". Along with "Update your anti-spyware protection".

Then there are the traditional balloons in the lower right hand corner saying there's an infection with the exclamation point warning sign. Then with a about 3 minutes it opens a Window asking to install PC Protection Center 2008.

I tried booting into Safe Mode and the infection prevents me from doing so. It just sits at the black screen with the Safe Mode text border. I tried the Diagnostics boot and the infection didn't like that either. The virus/malware still loaded and it messed with Windows Genuine Advantage. Windows now thinks that the hardware drastically change and we now have 3 days to verify the copy Windows. Trying to Verify it again just results in it saying there's an Active X issue and that it can't.

I also tried accessing TaskManager to see if the process was running but it disabled my ability to access TaskManager saying the Administrator disabled it even though I was on a Administrator account. So instead I tried Proc Explorer but I couldn't find anything in there that was suspicious.

A:Help! Getting SysProtect, Protection center and WinFix Pop-ups!

For the past week, I have been encountering the fake anti-virus 'Protection Systems,' sometimes calling itself Windows Security Center. I am constantly getting nag screens, pop ups and bubbles saying my system is infected. My google searches are redirected at times. Also, sometimes my system will shut down by way of a countdown, but I've stopped it recently running shutdown -a.

I have tried with Malwarebytes and it seemed to get rid of it at first, but it just keeps coming back. Then I couldn't even update Malwarebytes anymore, and now, after trying to uninstall it, it won't reinstall even after renaming the file. I have also scanned with Avira Antivir, and all it did was temporarily kill the processes. I have tried all of this in safe mode as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
