Adding a second monitor to my HP Envy laptop

Q: Adding a second monitor to my HP Envy laptop

I have a 17" HP Envy Touchsmart laptop and am trying to add my HP w2207 LCD monitor as a second monitor. My main purpose for adding the second monitor, was to be able to watch movies on a larger screen format. These are the following outputs on the monitor: DVI and VGAThe laptop has two HDMI inputs and several USB inputs I have connected the second monitor to the laptop using an HDMI to VGA adapter. The computer recognizes the monitor and when I get into configuring the monitor that is where I am getting problems, or things aen't working as I expected. When I go into "Extend", all I see is my desktop on the second monitor minus the Icons and if I'm watchig a movie on the laptop, I lose the audio on the laptop. If I chose "Duplicate", there is no picture on the second monitor and on the laptop I have a picture but no audio. If I chose "Second Screen Only", there is a picture and my Icons on that monitor but no audio if I'm watching a movie. Not sure if what I'm trying to do is at all possible . Are my connections correct and are there settings I have to make that I hven't done?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, It is a CTO machine, you can have few options as shown:         http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-envy---15t%C2%A0touch-laptop-w9c42av-1 That means it supports dual storage and yes you can add 1TB to the HDD bay/slot. Regards.

Have a freshly manufacturer refurbished Latitude E6410 laptop running Win7 Ultimate, 64 bit, SP1. Can't get it to detect a free standing Dell monitor or a Samsung flat screen TV using the PS2 or USB ports. I do this all the time with my other Win 7 and XP machines. Does this thing not have a good enough graphics card for this or what's the issue? Should be simple but just won't detect it in display settings as other Win 7 machines do.

Hello Ridgerunner mate I would be inclined to use the VGA output as it will give you much better graphics - if your monitors have the same connection - see pic

The resolution on that machine I see is better than usual so why not use a better connector??

Hello, trying to add a monitor to my laptop. I get a picture on both screen, however, when I close the laptop, I lose both screens. I have toggled every combination on the 'Display' screen in 'PC Setings' but haven't found the correct toggles as yet. Most of my periphials work(still adding) but not the display when I close laptop. Trying to make a desktop out of the laptop. I have it above me on shelf 18" above work area on a cooler/blower. Ideally, I want the laptop to come alive when opened, if and when I need to go to it for maintenance, etc. Where do I go to make my monitor the main screen? Monitor is a Samsung 24SD300. Thank you all for your help here!

I plugged a HP monitor,(mfg date 2003, supported Win 2000, XP) into the VGA connector of my laptop computer but my computer does not seem to recognize that there is a monitor connected because the monitor screen shows message "check video cable". The cable is a VGA to VGA and is brand new. The monitor power cable is supplying power to the monitor. My laptop uses Win 7, I tried all 4 options in the display setting and none of them send an image to the monitor( duplicate, extend, projector). Besides no video image being sent to the monitor, when I tried the extend choice in the display settings, still no image being sent to the ext monitor and also my laptop screen goes completely dark and I have to unplug the ext monitor in order to get my desktop screen back on the laptop.
The monitor seems ok. It should be able to work with my laptop, right? If anyone can help with this I'd appreciate it.

A:Adding external monitor to laptop

See if Control Panel -> Windows Mobility Center -> Display tells you anything useful.

Try restarting the machine with the external monitor attached.

You might not get anything on either display, but give it a shot.
There's a key sequence to switch monitors, but I can never recall it.

Hello,

I added a Dell monitor to my laptop (duo core running Win7) in order to have a much larger screen space to work with.  It worked however the color flickers every 15+ seconds or so!  I made sure the proper driver was installed for this monitor (and it is), and I checked my connections (all good).  I even unplugged the monitor and replugged it back in, rebooted twice and still the flickering occurs.  The monitor is pretty much brand new as it has rarely been used.  It came with a Dell system I purchased of which I already had a larger, better quality monitor for.

???

Thanks for any tips/help in getting this fixed!

A:Adding monitor to laptop causes flickering?

Hello and Welcome -
Here is what may be your answer (found at the Dell Laptop Forum) -

> after connecting a monitor to your laptop via VGA port you have to press either "F1" or  "F1" & "FN" to switch between internal, external, extend etc options.
> during boot up you have to press "F1" & "FN" to see the BIOS or Boot menus

> VGA monitors can only work within a certain range of resolution and frequency but usually cope very well with normal laptop screen settings.Unless you use more than 10 year old monitors you should be fine....

Thank You -

There were a lot of very old posts on this topic but no fresh ones, and hardware and software have moved on.  But the problem remains! So I am starting a new thread for a current solution. Trying to connect new ASUS monitor to my HP Envy laptop using Windows 10. I can use an adapter off a USB port into the monitor's VGA input, but I would like to do HDMI to HDMI (Monitor has HDMI input, Computer has only HDMI, no other outputs except USB.) When I try to do this (of course monitor then is set for HDMI input), the computer does not discover the monitor. It also does not see the speakers in the audio settings. What should I do?

Check the device manager under display adapters. Sometimes on a Windows 10 update you get Microsoft Basic which will not activate the HDMI port and you need to get the correct driver for the video. It would also help if we had the full model number or Product Number.

I've installed a second SSD (PNY CS1311 960 GB) in my HP Envy 17t that is not always being recognized.  After the initial install, I was able to see it in Disk Management, create a new simple volume and mount it as a folder.  Everything was working fine.  After the first reboot, the volume was missing and I was unable to find it in Disk Management.  I removed the SDD and connected it using a USB/SATA cable.  The volume is good, so I suspected the internal SATA cable was bad.  I ordered a new one and installed it, but the disk was still not recognized.  I double checked the cable and it was installed correctly.  After a few reboots, suddenly the disk was recognized again.  I was able to use the volume until the next reboot, when it disappeared again.  Any idea what might cause this behavior?

A:Adding a 2nd SSD to an HP Envy 17t

I had cloned the original 1TB 5400RPM HDD onto a new PNY CS1311 120GB SSD.  I wanted to have the OS and applications on the 120GB and add the PNY CS1311 960GB SSD in the 2nd bay for all my other files which I also backup offsite.  Since the laptop can only see the 2nd drive ocassionally, I've cloned the original HDD to the 960GB SSD.  The laptop works fine with just the 960GB SSD in the first bay.  It's not the setup I wanted, but it'll work.

This laptop already has installed a M2 PCIe 256GB SSD. I am looking to add an additional 1TB SSD, but through a 2.5" sata drive. Opening up the case, there is a space available for the additional drive, but I am unfamiliar of the necessary cable or mounting bracket that would be needed to complete this project. Looks like there is a slim (8 pin?) connection on the motherboard that a HDD connection can be used, but I am not knowledgeable on what that connection is called. I recently purchased the HP Evy 17t, model m7-n109dx laptop, and installed the Samsung 850 EVO M.2 500 GB SSD in the M.2 slot on the laptop.  However, I cannot determine how to enable the drive so it shows up in either Windows 10 or the BIOS.  I have made a recovery USB stick so I can install the OS on the M.2 drive and make the 1 TB drive that came with the computer a storage drive.  Am I overlooking something?  I have seen others on this forum that have installed this drive and apparently had no issues at all.  I have looked in the Boot Order setup and the BIOS settings as well, and checked disk management, but nothing is there.

Jkmatthews, Did you download the migration software from Samsung?  I have a m7 laptop also and have considered upgrading to the SSD option - but have not done so yet. I do know that Smasung provides toos to help migrate the OS from the 1TB to the SSD - and there are others out there as well. I would advise to NOT restore the OS from your memory-stick - until you've spent some time on the Samsung site and look at their migration tools.  And I believe there may be some configuration settings in the BIOS - but not sure, Hope this helps,LaptopJack

Product Name: HP ENVY 17 Leap Motion SE NB PC (ENVY 17 J170CA)Product Number: E8A00UA#ABLBIOS:F.67-06/06/2016 Hi, I am considering buying a Crucial 275gb SSD drive for my Envy 17 J170CA laptop, which has an empty drive slot in addition to the bay occupied by the 1TB drive included with my laptop. However, I am confused about a few aspects about the process: A. Is the special sata cable for the additional drive bay included with the laptop? The cable doesn't seem to be a regular sata cable. Also, if it is not, how would I acquire one and make sure that it is the same part number?B. Would a caddy/adapter of some sort be required as well for an SSD, or would it be okay to install the SSD without one since it is not a mechanical drive?C. On a less important side note, will the HP recovery image i created on a flash drive support the Crucial 275gb SSD to install Windows on it (the laptop shipped with windows 8, currently upgraded to windows 10)? I used to Crucial compatibility tool and it says its compatible with this laptop. I have spent several hours searching for the SATA cable and could not find a legitimate looking vendor in Canada, although I am aware that newmodeus and other sites are available in the US for a hefty price. Many others have also talked about ordering the HDD Hardware Kit on the HP parts store, but that's not available to order in Canada either. Thank you.

I need to run dual monitors on this computer. I purchased an EVGA GEFORCE GT 610 video card with dual DVI outputs. The card specifications say the PC power supply needs to be 300 watts, and have 16 amps of +12 V available, which the power supply in the Envy 700-216 meets. Plugging the card in results in no booting, no video out of either the card or the on-board video, and 8 beeps. Don't know if the card is just not compatible, or the card is defective, or the PC has a problem. Is there anything I can check to narrow down the problem? Thanks, audioconsultant

I have this HP ENVY x360 - 15-u111dx and I would like to add a SSD to this laptop for the OS to reside on.   According to the HP Support Assistant, it is a product number J9H90UA#ABA.HP Support page for this laptop provides me a link to this maintenance and service guide, http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04513489.  It seems to indicate that it does have the ability to take an SSD in the form factor of "M.2 2280-S3-B-M"  And in the product description, it says in the Internal Expansion section that it has this, "One 2280 M.2 daughter board - optional support for SSD"Used space on the C: drive is 90GB.  The D: (recovery) uses about 30GB.This leaves me with a few questions.1.  Can a SSD be added while keeping the factory 1TB drive installed?2.  Can I migrate the OS (and recovery partition) to that SSD, boot to that SSD, all the while not messing the up the ability to do a system restore/recovery of the OEM Windows 8.1 software provided by HP?I think step 2 will be the trickiest.  If someone knows of a free product to do this, I would welcome that recommendation.  I'll also take recommendations for paid software if no free exists.  Thanks. Edit:  Sorry, I also have a video problem, and must have had that on my mind when I sellected where to post this.  Could a mod move this to the correct forum please?

Hello all, I'm sorry to be long winded, But I want to be as thorough as I can be. This relates to a previous problem titled  "HP ENVY 17-j017sg mSATA & 2xHDD"   It was posted on 2/13/14.This has to do with a work around to use an msata as the c-drive.   On page 2 member RaymanForever listed in detail his 25 steps to get this to work.  I'm stuck. My original HDD died, and I replaced it with a 256Gb msata.  I insatalled windows 7 64bit fresh on the msata with no issues.  When the HDD is added I get the  "No bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key" message.  As the original post states this is to be expected.  I know from the post, the HDD needs to be formatted, with an EFI partition for the bootloader to get it to go to the MSATA where the OS is. My problem comes from......          When the HDD is installed, I cannot get the bootloader onto the HDD because I cannot access the HDD.  It shows up on the device manager, it shows when I hit escape and hit f2 in system diagnostics.  It shows when I start the computer and hit "CTRL I".   Physical device I.D. 0 is the HDD - Device I.D. 1 is my samsung EVO MSATA. The HDD dosen't show up on My Computer, or as an option when hitting F9 for boot options.  I'm hoping That I am just missing something obvious.  Maybe because I didn't clon... Hello all! So I've read around this forum about this topic and have seen mixed results.  I bought this computer a few years ago, generally pretty happy with it but I've run out of space and the battery is dying.  I'm trying to decide whether to overhaul it or buy new.   This is what I want to do: Add 2nd mSATA SSD into the second slot.  I've seen a post that this HD is compatible but thats one post.  I've read around that others have had issues adding a second SSD.  Some people cant access it, some people it only shows an extra 128 GB, some got a BSOD.   The post I saw replaced the original drive wih one of these and added a second drive so both HDs were the same brand.  Is this a better idea?  Also all of the posts I've seen on this topic were a couple years old and were dealing with Windows 7.  Will Windows 10 make this more difficult to do? http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-mSATA-2-Inch-MZ-M5E1T0BW/dp/B00TGIVRYU?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true... Alternatively I can try and use the same drive came with the comp in the second slot to help with possible compatability issues, but I would be limited to an extra 128GB (or possibly 256?).   I would also upgrade the memory to 8GB and add a new battery.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220618&ignorebbr=1 Thoughts on this being successful? I'd hate to waste money on these parts if this isnt going to work.  Thanks... Read more

I am working on my sister-in-law's laptop attempting to connect a 2nd monitor.  I have just replaced her RAM to 8 GIG (factory was 4 GIG)  and thought it would be easy to just hook up this second monitor.  We purchased a DVI to HDMI cable, hook the cable up to the monitor. Make sure there was power to the monitor.  Then I change the display settings to mirror the displays.  The second monitor turns on and shows the display however it in a split second turns black.  Power is still on for the 2nd display however it just displays black.    The graphic card I have in the HP-15 touch screen is the amd radeon (tm) r4 graphics.  I am wondering if I turn off the touch screen ability would it work or if anyone has any tips to get this second display to work please let me know.
