cant run anti virus, cant access anti virus websites

Q: cant run anti virus, cant access anti virus websites

My computer has been infected by a virus. It started with my computer telling me I was infected (pop ups) and directing me to their website. The virus prevents me from opening my Mcafee software. I also cannot do a system restore. I have tried but only get so far and it doesnt complete. I have tried this in safe mode with no luck. I have downoladed Malwarebytes to a usb mem stick and changed the .exe file to a fake name and ran the scan. It did find somethings but it didnt fix the problems. So I can still boot up but I cant access any antivirus websites and often the system hangs as I try different things and I reboot and try again without any luck. So I found this website and I thought I would give it a try. Am I a candidate for combofix /

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: cant run anti virus, cant access anti virus websites

Download this file and save it to your desktop:http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scrCopy it over to the problem computer on a CD or pen drive if you need to.Double-click the file to run it. A command window will open briefly. Then run a quick scan with Malwarebytes. Post the Malwarebytes log.

Thanks in advance folks-

Details as I remember (Windows XP, no updates for apx. 6 months, Netscape 7.2 browser, dial-up)

1. Started late November/early December as whenever I inserted a USB travel drive I would get message from aVast! that there was a virus detected and put in the chest. I would reformat the travel drive and still would get the message.

2. Problem degraded to not being able to update aVast! anymore (couldn't access, browser couldn't find)

3. Problem degraded to not being able to update SpyBot.

4. Installed Norton AntiVirus 2009 from purchased CD, removed aVast!, ran NAV, it found some adware items but continues to show a message on browser startup "An intrusion attempt by ******** (my computer ID) was blocked. Application path \DEVICE\HARDDISKVOLUME2\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SVCHOST.EXE" There are similar versions of this message that include the numbers xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx that look like server numbers (as you can tell I'm no expert here).

5. Tried to update Norton but I can't get on the Symantec site (browser says doesn't exist or address is wrong). The Norton virus database is from August 2008 so probably doesn't have the info I need for whatever ails me i.e. cannot run LiveUpdate. Also cannot get onto any MS site to get XP Service Package 3 (thinking there is a patch in there somewhere that deals with this).

6. Ran the old Spybot to clean up what I can. Downloaded AML Registry ... Read more

Hello, hold on to that HJT log as we may still be using it. i want you to try getting an Mbam scan log for us. Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run. ***Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to... I downloaded a virus after getting a link in a Facebook message, right after that i downloaded avast on another computer, installed it here and deleted some Trojan which it detected. After deleting it i could get on antivirus websites and than i went to sleep, when i got up this morning i got scared that i still have the virus after sending virus links in facebook messages to people in my friend list so i deleted Avast, apps on facebook and cookies in browser and got Matwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75.1.0.1300 trial and SUPERAntispyware 5.6.1018 which found 4 trojans that it deleted every time but after rebooting it found them again. I disabled system restore, revealed invisible files and deleted viruses in safe mode. 1virus is quarantined by SUPERAntispyware 5.6.1018 and im scared if i delete it, it might get back on the computer somehow?. But now i can't see any antivirus websites and it shows message like this for example (on all browsers-dragoncomodo,IE,chrome): "The webpage at http://free.avg.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
Error 137 (net::ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED): Unknown error."

Hello everyone.

I have tried my best to remove this virus on my laptop, but no success yet.

Here are all of the things the virus does:

-Prevents access to websites like spybot, instead of letting me see the site, it simply says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", and there is a button to click that says "Diagnose Connection Problem" (no connection problem of course)

-When I click links from a google search, they most of the time take me to the wrong webpage and I am forced to copy/paste the original link into the web bar.

-Programs like Combofix, Spybot, and HJT do not work and a box comes up after starting them saying "Combofix has stopped working".

-I tried running the programs in Safe Mode, but no luck there.

If anyone knows a fix please reply.

Thanks,

Sean

The problem started a few days ago when I got a fake anti-virus, I promptly killed it with Malware Bytes Anti-Malware or so I thought. Later that day the computer restarted without prompting or warning and then kept restarting just after windows loaded. So I went into safe mode and ran AVG Malware bytes and Spybot. They all found stuff and killed them. I left the computer a bit and there was another Fake anti-virus. I killed it and then winlogin and severel other windows system files were being killed by Data Execution Prevention. After several attempt to remedy the problem we took drastic steps. WE formatted and reinstalled windows. We couldn't activate this windows because it wouldn't give us a installation ID so we found a disk with the version of windows the computer previous;y had from an older computer that got fried. Because of this there are 3 OS on the computer. The recovery drive which was not included in the format reads as: Unrecognized Operating System on drive C and XP Professional which should have been erased from the 2nd formatting from the current OS XP Media Center.

Now that we are able to logon we saw that the bugger was still there. I can get on the internet but the virus is preventing me from getting help anti-virus and anti-spyware sites are all not coming up. I do have 1 anti-virus that I have on CD but it's 2 years old and the virus won't let it update. Now I am here.

Hi guys

I found this thread that I hoped would help me (http://www.techsupportforum.com/f100...es-316265.html) but unfortunately my virus is even stopping me from going to microsoft.com so I am unable to follow through the instructions.

I recently re-formatted my PC but did not install any anti-virus straight away. Now I've got round to doing that, I went to the www.mcafee.com website to enter my serial code that my company provides me for free home anti-virus to find that the website says "Server not found". I called a couple of people and asked them to try the site and it worked for them and not me. I thought perhaps it was Firefox, so I closed that off and went back to IE7....still had the same problem. So I called up my ISP and they didnt have a clue of the problem. It was only until I called up a local "computer hospital" they informed me I could have a virus that stops me from installing anti-virus. I tried a few other anti-virus websites such as AVG, Kaspersky, and funnily enough all these sites came up with "Server not found" aswell!

I am using Windows XP
I am using Firefox as my Internet Browser
I connect to the internet using wireless broadband

I'm hoping that someone is able to help me with this problem. If you need anymore information about my PC then please let me know. I do have some computer knowledge but I am not an 'expert', so if you mention any technical terms these may need to be explained to me.

I am hoping t... Read more

Hi! I received a virus that pointed me to an anti-virus website everytime I opened a new browser. Everytime that I tried to run a virus scan, it would block updates to my Zonealarm software. I also could not access anti-virus software sites through IE or Firefox. But I could access them through Safari.I scanned the computer with the software recommended by bleeping computer. The problem is partially fixed now. The IE browser no longer automatically points to the fake anti-virus software webpage. But I still cannot access the anti-virus websites such as zonealarm.com or mcafee.com. The computer seems to run out of memory if I leave it on and just freezes. Another issue is that if I leave the computer on overnight, it automatically runs an advertisement for MTV over and over. I can hear the commercial from my PC, but no browser is running and I do not see any applications running in Windows Task Manager when this happens. It's like a ghost...I've since installed ZoneAlarm Forcefield which somehow allows me to access the antivirus sites that were blocked... but when I run in 'unprotected' mode, I am still unable to access them. This tells me that there's still bad stuff going on in my PC.I've attached a recent HJT log. I am having two problems.

First, I am trying to install Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 but it reports that McAfee is installed. McAfee is not installed but there are some references to it in the registry.

Second, and more importantly, I am not able to access any anti-virus websites such as McAfee.com or Kaspersky.com. I have no problem with other websites.
This started happening on Aug 15, 2009 when I removed an older version of Kaspersky to install the new one. I was able to access the Kaspersky website at least once.

Also I no longer have any restore points prior to Aug 15, 2009.

I am looking for help with the second problem so I can move onto the first.

PS. I have some commercial software that puts activation keys in the root of C:\. Let me know if I should move these to Floppies before any repairs.

Every time I try to access an anti-virus website (Mcafee, Norton ,etc) I get an error message, while other websites load without a problem. In addition to this, I am also having regular problems with the laptop freezing. After reading up on this site I ran a combo fix (nb. Hi,

ComboFix is meant to be run only under supervision of trained persons.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs: DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Hi there,

Recently have had some issues with Google Chrome not opening when I double-click the icon. I then searched online and found it may have been conflicting with AVG antivirus. So I uninstalled it and now everything seems to be going wrong - I can't even activate windows defender.

I tried to look for people who have similar issues and managed to run my Malwarebyte (by naming it .com rather than .exe), but it won't update and even after deleting the found infections, nothing really changed.

Currently Google chrome still doesn't work and I can't run any anti-virus systems, nor can I access anti-virus websites and microsoft websites, because a page comes up that say "failed to open page" (also can't go on bleepingcomputer to download some software - but I found them on different mirror links)

I can still access other websites, but without any anti-virus systems working.

Please please kindly help me with this issue. I followed the thread on posting questions and have attached everything as requested, except for the Gmer scan.

I ran a full scan on Sunday morning and after 6 hours it was still running. I saw it was taking a long time scanning some Rosetta Stone (language learning software), so I uninstalled and deleted all my spanish collection... I then ran another scan on Sunday evening but this morning it is still running! So I stopped it and attached the log for only the quick scan - I hope this is ok...
I took the day off work... Read more

Hello My mother in-law recently asked me to look at her computer as she had tried to move a file from home to work when she was prompted with a virus pop-up window. The IT department stated that her memory key had been infected which could only have come from her home PC.After trying to update her antivirus software it became clear that something was restricting certain sites and updates. A usual GOOGLE search popped up with a string from Feb 09 on this website with exactly the same problem explaining very clearly what to do.First was to install Malwarebytes - done via another PC onto CD as the PC would not allow access to the websiteThis was complete and a log created stating 5 threats which have been quarantined and deleted successfully. Log retainedNext I downloaded ComboFix and ran creating another log. Again log retained. My question is simple, there is still a problem however I cannot seem to remedy and assume the detail is in the combofix log????Can anyone help?Tony

Hi,

I just downloaded a "keygen" from bittorrent, and when I opened the exe file, nothing happened, then the exe file disappeared/deleted itself. I am pretty convinced that this was a virus, because my computer has slowed down significantly.

Now this part is unbelievable - I went online to download an antivirus program or the online Trend Micro scan, AND MY BROWSER (Firefox and IE) WON'T LET ME ACCESS ANY ANTI-VIRUS WEBPAGES!!! I managed to download Hijackthis and Spybot by downloading them through download.com, but it wouldn't let me go directly to the official sites! How strange is that?

Attached are links to the original file that I downloaded, if someone can scan it for me and deduce how to fix the problem, and also my Hijackthis log. (I hosted them on senduit.com for one week so you can access them.)

Thanks so, so much.

Hi All,
I'm having a few problems with virus, apparently. I realised in one of my laptops (when i wanted to do an online Panda ActiveScan virus search) that i can't open any anti-virus website or even the windows update website. I was in the process of re-installing XP in one of my laptops and even after installation, the virus is still there and it wont even let me install Avira (from a previously downloaded file) because, at a certain point in time, when Avira trys to connect to the internet, i get a msg saying that internet connection couldnt be established.
So, bottom line, i got the same virus on 2 laptops running XP SP3 and no anti-virus installed.
I've seen some other posts on the same topic but for each of the solutions, people have submited logs of some kind and i wasn't sure if their solution would apply to me as well.
It would be great if someone would tell me what to do.

Thanks for your time!

Bernardo

I have a nasty if not multiple nasty virus's and have not been successful removing them. It started with the XP Anti-Virus 2011 Removal fake anti-virus popping up with all real anti-virus programs disabled and anytime I try to go to an antivirus website I'm redirected to a random site. This happens in all browsers not just Internet Explorer. I also had many of my files changed to hidden file folders and also the start/all programs button does not show any of my programs. I mananged to get both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware on my computer and was able to get rid of much of the problems by running these programs. Now it seems the XP Anti-Virus 2011 has been removed but I still have the issue with my webpages being redirected depending on which page I try to access. I also have many processes that should not be running in the task manager and when i close them out they just start back up again. This worm seems to be accessing my iexplorer because there are multiple iexplorer.exe open at all times and sometimes the CPU Usage gets very high which is not normal for my computer. The final symptom is that at random times I get a webpage pop up or if not a webpage an error that reads like the following example:

An error has occured in the script on this page.

Camera Wizard not poping up after removing Total Security/Antivirus Pro_2010 I have a PC with Windows XP SP3 with Avast, SuperAnti-Spyware and MBAM while browsing I got a yellow virus warning (something win32 I believe) from Avast pop up near the bottom tray and within seconds the Total Security pop-ups started. My PC slowed to a stop so I rebooted and saw that Antivirus Pro_2010 had installed itself on my PC. All my Anti Virus programs would not start (ie MBAM) so I ended up following forums to end some processes, delete some .dll files that were known to be malicious and rename the .exe's to get Anti Virus programs to run. I installed and used AVG which found a couple things. Then I used ComboFix, and finally I got MBAM to run which found a good 40+ trojans etc. I believe I got the virus off but I tried to restore to before I got the virus but was unable to. I have since run scans with MBAM and SuperAnti-Spyware which have found nothing. Avast also finds nothing but it has a list of 44 files (mostly in WINDOWS\ folder with the last path part of file doubled) that it is unable to scan: because "The system cannot find the specified path". When I look on my C: drive and follow the file path, the second to last part is always missing (ie. WINDOWS\addins\addins) addins is not there. When I plug in my camera, the camera wizard does not pop up anymore as it use to before I had and removed the virus. I also saw on the unscanable list that there was a WINDOWS\Connecti... Read more

Hello. I am working on a friends machine that seems to have a nasty infection. This machine is a dedicated server running Windows Server 2003 Web. Everything I am doing to it is via remote desktop which is making it a little more of a challenge. Web browsing on the server was incredibly slow when he asked me to take a look at it. I figured he was infected with something so I was going to try and install a few things on it and run a few scans, only to find that all of the sites that I found to use are blocked or disable by whatever is infecting the server. Any attempt to access an anti-virus or anti-malware website results in a message stating server cannot be found. Any other website can be accessed though.

There is an FTP server running on this machine, so I do have that availability to FTP to the server to get any file or program to it that I need to. Please just let me know what you need from me and I will get it up here as soon as I can. I am a fairly experienced user and can grasp things pretty easily. Thanks for your time, I greatly appreciate it.

Hello this is my first post at bleeping computer, because I can usually figure out all of my computer related problems on my own. But this time I am in over my head. I recently got a vundo variant virus that was very difficult to remove along with a clicker virus and a few other random trojans. The first thing that alerted me to this was a message telling me that a virus had been detected. It looked suspicious to me so I didn't install what it was asking me to install and it turns out I was right. It was a false windows alert message created by a virus. I tried to go download a new anti-virus program but the virus I have has made it impossible to connect to any anti-virus or help related websites without using a program called Tor configured with foxyproxy, a firefox add-on. This has also created another problem, when I try to install spybot search and destroy and mbam it wont install because it has to connect to the servers at those websites. I have run many deep and full system scans with avg anti virus, ad-adware free edition, and super anti-spyware free edition. Initially it detected many virus and registry entries which I had to remove in safe mode, but now it detects it as clean. I know I just wrote a novel pretty much but please read it and help me out because I need to be able to connect tech websites and anti-virus websites. Also I have checked my host files under the system 32/drivers/ect folder and it is clean. There is nothing malicious left on my system that ... Read more

Dear All

Hope someone may be able to help here. I am usually able to resolve most infected pc issues but this machine is a problem. I have successfully run Malwarebytes and ComboFix and have got it back to a good stable working state except fot the fact that any Antivirus Sites will not open - all other sites will open ok ( but do get an occasional redirect still ). Have checked Hosts file and all seems ok - just one entry 127.0.0.1 as normal. There is obviously a hijacker somewhere. Here is the HijackThis log if anyone can help a little here - would be appreciated.

Hello. A similar problem was addressed on another post but it doesn't really answer my problem.

Yesterday, I started having trouble with my computer. It would either just have the wallpaper or it would display the icons and start menu bar intermittently (for about 3 seconds).

I tried a system restore, but it wouldn't do anything after I pressed the "next" button (on the page after I choose my restore date). It just remained on the same page.

After a couple hours of looking around, I was finally able to get the icons to stay (I beleive it was the explorer application in the task manager). But then, the icons started dissappearing again and other stuff tried to attack my computer (or so Comodo says).

My computer won't let me go on any anti-virus websites and it tried to stop me from adding "hijack-this" from a flash drive. It has, so far, prevented me from installing "malwarebytes anti-malware". I am forced to type this on a second computer.

Any help you can provide would be great appreciated. Thanks. I have included my hijack-this log below:

First of all i would like to apologize if this topic is in wrong category, or it should not even be asked on this site. And second of all, please be patience i'm a noob looking for answers So whats all about? Well i'm meeting new terms here and i have no idea what they mean and what they do. And as anyone else i wanna be safe in this era of cyber-crime. So basically i know whats a anti-virus and a anti-spyware and that they can run together. Also i heard that 2 anti-virus don't do good but 2 anti-spyware do. So what i'm asking is, what is a anti-malware? Can a anti-malware, anti-virus, and anti-spyware run together? Could you suggest some good+free of those 3? Sorry for my bad English and being such a noob

A:Anti-malware, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware

Florin, you might take interest in this thread, though it may be quite a bit of reading: What's the Best Anti-virus?

It is there that they discuss all kinds of different antiviruses and coupled security software. I personally only use Microsoft Security Essentials, but I have used it along with Malwarebytes for added security in the past.

Basically, you could have your system completely locked down with lots of extra security, but in some cases it becomes a hassle because of how much your computer becomes protected and overly secured. If you prefer a speedy computer over security, generally you use less security software, but if it is the other way around, you will want beefier security software which may slow things down slightly. That link I've provided will have most everything you will need.

Hi

I've been having troubles with my PC for a while now. But now it is worse than ever!

Let me give you a back story -

For the past few months I have had the problem where svchost.exe takes up a huge amount of memory and brings your computer to a crawl. With the help of this forum I finally fixed it. However, a month or so later it was back - It wasn't anywhere near as bad this time, but it still slowed me down.
So what I did was do a factory re-install of my whole computer. Everything was now fresh. However, the svchost problem remained.

I looked on google for some solutions and stumbled across one that looked promising. I tried to download the file the person suggested and save to my desktop, but I got an access denied message. So I went to google again. to find out why I was getting access denied. I read that I should go in to my C: drive folder, right click - properties - security - advanced ( something along those lines) and disable administrator access, then enable it again. Yes looking back this was very stupid, but I wasn't thinking. So I did this, and now I have access to nothing. I can't download anything, I can't transfer files from a USB to my computer even in safe mode, I can't do a system restore.

On top of this AVG and the built in windows defender have both somehow been disabled, and I can't turn them back on (I have been told this is probably because I have a virus on my system, but I don't know if this is true or not)... Read more

A:PC is a MESS - Virus disabled anti-virus, Access Denied, svchost etc.ws

Ok so PART 1 IS SOLVED

I fixed the 'access denied' issue by booting up safe mode with networking, from there going into the security options of my C Drive, and managed to enable access that way.

Still got problems with svchost and antivirus being disabled though. I have just downloaded malwarebytes and am currently scanning with it.

Hi,

My desktop PC running on Windows XP Professional with SP3 is infected with some kind of virus/spyware that prevents access to anti virus sites.

The virus has also corrupted McAfee virus scan binary and prevents access to sites which clean spyware/malware. I have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SuperAnti Spyware installed. But they cannot update their definitions since the virus attack started about 1 week ago.

I have tried several attempts to clean the virus/malware using the above anti spyware (McAfee scan is corrupted and won't start). The anti spyware finds a few worms and trojans and says that it cleaned them, but they keep coming back. I ran the scan in Safe mode with/without internet connection but that didn't help.

I have Zone Alarm installed but think that it is also infected.

Following are the main symptoms I see

3. After doing a Google search in IE, if I click any website link, it is redirected to another random site. Sometimes opening the link in another IE window helps. (right click -> "open in new window")
Cannot access Microsoft or any anti virus/spyware related website.

I have a Windows XP Home laptop and I am unable to access any anti-virus websites for updates. Also tried installing Ad-aware but it failed. Malwarebytes found 2 objects but could not delete them on restart. Here are the results from DDS and the GMER results attached. What are the next steps?

Thanks in advance!
