Unexpected BIOS parameter reset

Q: Unexpected BIOS parameter reset

For the past few days, whenever I start up my desktop in the morning, I am requested to set system time and date in the BIOS which have been zeroed out. By the same token, I notice that several parameters (not all of them) have been changed : RAID controller was activated (I leave it deactivated), IDE mode is changed from P-ATA to mixed, boot sequence and language are changed, etc.

This incident occurs regularly when the pc has been shut down for a few hours, for example all night. It doesn't occur if I do a reboot.

Is this a sign of my battery running out?

My MB is an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe.

Preferred Solution: Unexpected BIOS parameter reset

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My son and I are working on a high (for us) performance computer that he can use for a gaming machine. I have entered the relevant system specifications in my user profile.

We have it running at its rated speed, but we are interested in overclocking the system eventually. We had some trouble just getting the machine to run at its rated speed, just because the BIOS documentation was very unclear about what the various parameters do, exactly, and how the parameters interact.

For example, the CPU clock needs to run at 166MHz to clock the CPU at 1.8GHz, but when we changed it to 166MHz (from the fail-safe default 100MHz) the system became very unstable. We discovered by accident that we needed to set the memory clock to the same speed, instead of "Auto by SPD". You would think that the automatic setting would be the one you want, but no. Anyway there are lots of these kinds of non-intuitive issues, especially when we want to move towards overclocking, and away from the standard specs. The on-screen descriptions and the manuals are very vague about the effect of changing a parameter might have, so a lot of our time is spent just fiddling instead of taking a scientific approach. There also seems to be very little searchable information on the web. Does anyone know where to find this kind of information?

As an electronics engineer, I am used to consulting spec sheets to get timing and configuration information, but nothing like this seems to be available for the B... Read more

I have a Netgear DGN2200v4 router.

Yesterday I had random problems with the Internet connection - not unknown here. My usual practice is to drop the ISP connection and then login again, but that did not work. So switched the router off, waited, then powered it on again. Usually that fixes the problem, but not this time. Repeated that a few times - still no luck.

Eventually I discovered that the router had reset itself to factory defaults! I reloaded configuration details from a backup file and OK after that. BUT....why would it apparently reset itself like that?

Maybe an unusual reaction to a small power surge?

Maybe trying to alert you that it is beginning to fail and you may want to start researching/shopping for your next router?

Suddenly, my function keys (i.e., F1, F2, F3, etc.) produces results different from expected.

I.e., in Excel, F2 used to allow me to edit the cell. Now it undoes last paste.
I had set F4 in Firefox to open / close addons. Now it opens a new tab.

There are many other changes to the function key effects.

Is there some way to reset the functions keys back to default?

A:Function keys produce unexpected results--how to reset?

Locate the shortcut to the program that you want to create a keyboard shortcut for.
Right-click the shortcut, and then click Properties.
In the Shortcut Properties dialog box, click the Shortcut tab.
Click in the Shortcut key box, press the key on your keyboard that you want to use in combination with Ctrl+Alt (keyboard shortcuts automatically start with Ctrl+Alt), and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
You can now use this keyboard shortcut to open the program.
To delete a shortcut

Right-click the shortcut that you want to delete, click Delete, and then click Yes. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

When you delete a shortcut, only the shortcut is removed. The original item is not deleted.

I am look for a last ditch help on fixing the BIOS/POST problem on a perfectly fine E6230
I was attempting to make a powered eSATA cable work when I enabled the SATA 4 and SATA 5 button in the BIOS.
After reboot... nothing..
I have been told it is a motherboard failure but this is too co-incidental!
I have tried a reset of the BIOS by disconnecting all power even the BIOS Coin battery .... nothing - no POST - although the LED shows that laptop is detecting lack of memory and HDD
A search shows that for INSPIRON laptops the BIOS can be unpacked and re-FLASHED to reset.
Does anyone know how to achieve this with the DELL Latitude Laptop or another way to reset the BIOS setting please?

Hi, I'm trying to update the BIOS on my T440P. I'm currently on 2.34 and I'd like to get to the latest (2.48 I believe). I don't have Windows so I'm reliant on using the bootable ISO images.  Looking at the README, it's clear that 2.34 can't be updated using the ISO updater - and when I tried I got and "unexpected error" with no more information. I've also tried downgrading to 2.33 first using the ISO updater so that I could then update straight to 2.48 but this has the same result. Is there any way I can do this? Cheers,

A week ago I got a blue screen of death which I've never gotten on this (~3-4 year old) machine. When it booted back up it loaded a BiOS I'd never seen before Gigabyte UEFI double BiOS. Over the next several days the computer was rebooted and the normal BiOS came up without an issue. 3 days ago the computer was started up, shut down and restarted. On the second restart It got hung up on the Windows screen with this error

I restarted and everything worked just fine. I ran antivirus and anti malware scans which came up with nothing. I also ran chkdsk which came up just fine. Every time I turn the computer on sometimes it's fine, sometimes I get the alternate BiOS and sometimes Windows loads with a messed up screen resolution (which is fixed upon restart).

I've tried to read on this an other forums but I don't know what's going on. I don't know whether a plug is loose or if the motherboards failing or what. I'm not sure what other checks I can do. The intermittent nature of a seemingly big problem is inexplicable. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

This problem occurred a year and a half ago (?) Perhaps a little longer, not too sure. And haven't really bothered to do all that much investigation into fixing it and whatnot until just now.

*It got a nasty bump just before this occurred, though nothing seems to be out of place or rattling around within, and though it had received the odd bumps and whatnot before and worked alright afterward.

Anyway, what happens every time it's turned on:

- Screen remains completely black for 5-10 seconds
- COMPAQ logo appears in the middle of the screen
(Sometimes accompanied with "196608 KB OK" in the top left hand corner, not always though)
- This screen sticks around for 20+ seconds
- While this screen is up the laptop sounds as if it were in pain as it attempts to start up, the only way I can think of describing these "sounds" is as if a disc were in the CD ROM and it were rotating around and stops/skips/has trouble. Continues rotating. Stops. Which it repeats until the screen changes.

(It's not the CD ROM that's causing this though, I took the CD ROM out and tried starting it up again, these sounds still occurred.)

- After this the screen goes to black, the painful sound stops and instead is replace with beeping:
Beep (Long)
Beep (Long)
Beep (Long)

- Then a message is displayed at the top of the screen saying:
"Fixed Disc Parameter Table or BIOS Error

Alright guys, here is the scoop. I just got a refurbished ASUS K75DE laptop, and it came with Win8 on it. I am wanting to run a dual boot with Win7, so I disabled fast-boot just fine, and went into the UEFI BIOS and disabled the secure boot.

While I was there, I did like I have always done and set a BIOS boot-up password. I then proceed to boot to my Win7 installer USB Flash drive, but I was running low on battery power so I aborted the install and shut the computer down to try again later.

Now however when I get into BIOS to select boot priority, all options are grayed out except for system time and a few other non-essentials. At the bottom of the first BIOS screen it says "User Level : User" and I can't seem to find a way to reverse this issue. So now I'm stuck, can't boot to anything but the HDD because it is first by default.

I know this is a Windows 8 forum, but I have literally spent 6 hours Googling this problem and have made no gains. I did update my BIOS version to the latest because someone said they couldn't change any boot order options, but it made no change.

Please help! Any ideas might prove helpful. I've been posting all over the net on forums seeking a solution. Any info or clarification you need, just let me know.

A:ASUS K75DE Windows 8 & 7 dual boot, unexpected BIOS prob

You might have to call Asus on that, I use Asus MBs and that's never happened to me. You should have been prompted to enter your password upon entering the BIOS. There should be a way to enter the password you set.

Can you re-install your current BIOS? That might reset it.

Or something along those lines. I was having RAM/CPU issues with my computer and everyone kept asking me "did you install all the drivers?"...of course I did! I'm not retarded! NOTE: I've tried putting the BIOS files on a CD/Flash Drive and it doesn't work. The manufacturer won't replace it because they say it's 'not their problem'. This is my last hope.

A while ago I tried to put a new HDD in my laptop and got a message saying something a long the lines that the disk wasn't recognised (forgot exact message)

I took the computer to my computer repair shop and they installed the HDD I asked them if it would be easy for me to do it and they said yes it was just a case of resetting the BIOS.

Can anybody please tell me how to reset the BIOS so I can install a new HDD?

I've installed HDD's in windows 7 machines and it was just a case of inserting the disk- I didn't have to mess with the BIOS!

A:How to reset BIOS for new HDD

Check your BIOS to see if the hard drive detection is set to "auto." If so, your hard drive should have already been detected. If your hard drive is not recognized by the BIOS, take it back to the repair shop. What makes you think the BIOS is not already recognizing your new HD? Did you try inserting the installation disk? If so, what happened?

A:How can i reset the Bios?

i can't see how 'resetting the BIOS' could solve wireless issues (unless you have an onboard wlan controller that has been disabled in the BIOS)

you should provide detailed info on the real problem which i don't think is related your BIOS settings.

if you really want to 'reset the BIOS', there are 2 options:

1. open the computer case, refer to your main board manual, find the correct jumper switch to clear the CMOS on the mainboard and follow the instructions.

2. enter the BIOS setup utility and load the Default settings.

On reboot, it repeatedly got stuck on the BIOS looking for the HDs. It could not even reboot to a bootable CD, just hung.

But when I go into either the boot menu directly or through setup, all it sees is the CD-ROM group. The First Channel Devices 0 and 1 are my DVD writer and reader respectively, and there's nothing else. There is no sign of my HD.
