I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I'm brand new here and I don't have tons of computer knowledge although I am learning....I hope! We bought a campground last year and were offering a wifi hot spot located near the camp office. It was actually done by accident because we live in the same building and have our own home network of 3 computers. We have a Linksys WRT54G router and a cable modem. So the campers were hopping on our wireless. I had some problems over the winter with someone using my credit card online. I was advised to maybe try getting another router and a hub/switch and basically to hook that hub/switch to the cable modem and then hook both routers to that and to have one of the routers be secured (WPA) and the other unsecured for the campers to use as a wifi hotspot. I also bought a Linksys range expander which I haven't set up yet. If this configuration with 2 routers on the same cable modem will work, I will set up the range expander to the unsecured router. I emailed linksys to ask them if this whole configuration was possible and the answer I received was basically not very straightforward but they made it sound like it couldn't be done. So now I'm asking you if it can be done the way I said or if there's another way I can offer an unsecured hot spot without compromising my own home network and security and without costing me a fortune. Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Today i have a new problem with my adsl. The wireless was working at full 'advertised' speed last night, then today i noticed the wireless connection symbol in the task bar had changed from 54mbs to only 2 mbs, and a speedtest showed that it was a tenth of the speed it used to be.

Because i just installed my modem yesterday, i thought maybe this was just the isp limiting my connection until i register the modem or something. However, when i connect an ethernet cable between the modem and my computer, the connection works at full advertised speed. Does this rule out the possibility that my isp is limiting my signal, and suggest that the problem is with my wireless settings? Thanks for any help. The modem is a speedtouch 780.

A:Wireless router connection to ADSL router

You might need to check the settings of the ADSL modem, perhaps it has a Mac filtering option enabled which prevents another computer from connecting to it without first adding the Mac address in a list of authorized devices on the modem.

Also in the WiFi router's web interface, can you see the status of the Ethernet port ?

Hoping someone can help.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP with a wireless connection to a broadband router.

Several weeks ago my laptop started dropping the internet connection randomly (I'm alos unabel to access email when this happens).

My wireless network icon in my toolbar shows the connection as 'Excellent' but for some reason both Internet and Email is not available. The only way to fix the problem has been to restart my laptop which is very frustrating.

I've noticed that this also happens randomly when I'm at home (using different wireless broadband modem) so I think the issue is my laptop not the 2 x routers/modems.

I'm running NOD32 for security as well (but have been for 4 years now with no problems till now).

Please help.

Ok here we go, I read the previous post of someone else having trouble with a Dlink 604 router and hope I can resolve this without having to purchase a new router as this one is only 2-3 months old and I can't afford a new one right now. I am running XP home with Qwest DSL service everything is cat5 cable connections.

Modem alone: connection via PPPOA for Dynamic IP, DNS is set to qwest IP's, DHCP server off and Windows TCP/IP Settings static, everything well and good.

QUESTION:When I connect my dlink DI604 router my settings are

Modem: RFCBridged, DMZ to Router for all port forwarding, DHCP off. Windows TCP/IP Settings static

Router settingsPPOE (has no selection for PPPOA) DNS is set to qwest IP's, DHCP off, Windows TCP/IP Settings static.

Both Connections work and DSLreports download/upload test comes out the same both connection methods, the problem is web page loading is slow with the router connected not quite dial-up slow but close. The test speed being the same leads me to think I have something setup wrong with DNS settings. Anybody have any ideas why this is happening or settings to try to speed it back up.

I have tried router DNS set to modem IP, DHCP on/off and anything else I can think of but still no change.

Please Help I can't just unplug it or my wife will have no Internet on her PC

A:Connection slowing after Dlink router connection

I'm somewhere between rather and totally confused by this, but will stick in my two cents worth anyhow.

With "Windows TCP/IP Settings static" I suspect that your best browsing results will be with DNS (on the computer) set to "qwest IP's." Maybe this is what you have already.

Your modem settings make me think that it's a modem/router combo. True? If so, when you use the modem without the Dlink, are you also using it "RFCBridged," or is that another difference between your two configurations?

And, finally, if it does turn out to be a defective Dlink router, are you not still within the warranty period?

I've been trying to extend my homes wireless network, without buying any new kit. At one end of the house is a Netgear router, but wifi only reaches half way. I've trailed a LAN cable to the other side of the house, and have been trying to connect up an old Belkin wireless router and use it as a switch.
I've followed these instructions : http://www.togaware.com/linux/survivor/Router_Router.html

My Netgear router ip is
My Belkin is

After resetting the Belkin, I can log on using, and change about half of the settings. I disable DHCP, change the WAN to stop it being used and try to change the LAN, but when I click save to go onto a different area on the router configuration, I get stuck with the message similar to "Your changes are being saved". No matter what I try after that, I cannot get onto the Belkin config menu without holding reset for 20seconds, and losing all the changes.

I've tried ipconfig on command, and I've tried to ping but neither worked.

I've also tried changing the LAN settings first, but have the same problem.

What should I have plugged into what, when I'm changing router config. Netgear is all set up, with WAN in. I've not used the Belkin WAN, and only plugged it into the Netgear, and my laptop into the Belkin to change the settings.

I can find related threads, but nothing answers this specific problem.

Any help would be much appreciated!... Read more

A:Router-router connection blues

I have stopped it from turning off everytime I save a change, but I am still struggling to set it up. I've followed these instructions:

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

from john will on this forum, but I still can't get wifi from the second router to connect to the internet.

I have a non-wireless router and I want to attach my wireless router to add wireless (dsl modem -> router -> wireless router). Every time I try, shortly after I configure the wireless router, the main router loses it's settings and I have to cycle it. I am out of ideas and have no idea why this keeps failing.

The main router is a cisco/linksys rvs4000 vpn gigabit router. The wireless router is one of the older linksys wrt54g routers. The modem is in bridge mode. The main router is configured with static IP with ISP settings, DHCP enabled. The two routers are connected LAN-to-LAN. The wireless router is set to have a static IP on the WAN side (which is different that the first router), and the LAN IP is just outside of the main router's DHCP range. I've tried like this and with DHCP. DCHP is disabled.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Have you networked all the comps using the network connection wizard, and if you want to plug the modem straight to your comp switch the modem off for at least 30secs before doing so.

Hi all looking for some guidance. I have a PC connected direct to cable modem and another PC using wireless through a router, I never set this up so dont have a clue. Anyhow I got an updated router from virgin and the instructions are basically plug in and go, well I did this and it knocked out my (direct) pc like I didnt have an internet connection.
Do I have to load the DVD for the wireless router to my direct connect PC? or just the wireless one.
I also at one point got a message on the direct one about putting a password in (8 digits) I did that and it kept saying it must be an 8 digit even though it was.
Is there anything else I should be doing. I realize the problem is likely to be me so any help appreciated.

Here's my problem, I have 2 pc's connected to the internet through a router. I want to be able to have a LAN connection (with file sharing and all the rest of it) with them.

We both have Win XP SP2 and Zonealarms firewall (which we have put each other's IP in as a Trusted IP), we have also run the new network wizards more time that I can remember. We have also set some of our folders to sharing and also turned off the windows firewall but with no sucess.

To give an example, I wanted to play a mutliplayer game with the guy on the the second pc using the 'Play LAN Game' rather than connecting to the internet.

Any help would be great.

Oki i have two rather small yet highly annoying problems.

1) Whether i'm using IE or FF some sites/pages will not load correctly - even though ive visited the sites on other computers (ie at work) and not had any problems. For example:

www.unitedhosting.co.uk - all that loads it the logo, the flash animation, the 'Established since...' text and some of the footer area. The progress bar very gradually goes up and after a few minutes all other images appear as the 'could not load/find' red cross. Interetstingly enough i also tried www.unitedforums.co.uk (run by the same people) and this site just wont load at all.

2) The site http://info.vilesilencer.com/ contains a link to download an xls excel file containing a list of SEO friendly directories. When i click on either quick link (white) link it simply opens a new window with the URL http://info.vilesilencer.com/seo-friendly-list.xls but doesnt not start the download of the xls file. If i try using the alternative link below it (in red with dotted underline) it simply tries to load the same page but nothing happens and the page does not change and the xls file does not start downloading.

Needless to say these are two very annoying little problems which only seem to be happening to me on my computer.

I have done a full virus scan using AVG with the latest defintions, have cleared my cache and history, run chkdsk, have tried changing the ActiveX settings, have tried without Google Toolbar running, do... Read more

Need to connect to the network at my workplace as if I were there. It is a workgroup and not a client server domain. I want to use XP Pro to log into the LAN through a Linksys BEFVP41. In the back of the manual to my Linksys router there are instructions for setting up secpol.msc. But isnít that only if I have a real server like Microsoft Server 2003 inside the LAN? From what I have gathered from reading stuff at Microsoft.com that seems to be the case. At first I thought that the router would connect me to the LAN w/o needing an internal server. But I am wrong to think that arenít I? My DSL router has a bimap rule to direct traffic to my VPN router.

So if I need a VPN server then why even create the tunnel with the VPN router? Isnít that for a router to router connection? The router allows IPSec and PPTP pass-through. So I tried both ways. I tried enabling the tunnel as well as disabling the tunnel and setting up an XP Pro machine inside the LAN as a VPN server by using the Network Connections features that Pro offers. (Reference: Microsoft Press: ďWindows XP Networking Inside outĒ) I followed the instructions in this manual to set up the server and create the connection to the server. I had the router forward requests on port 500 to the PC running the VPN server connection. It didnít work. It looks like this feature is only for dial-up into the VPN server. Is that correct? I did read that the VPN operates on top of the connection. I'm supposed to be able to dia... Read more

A:no router connection

We don't yet know enough information to identify the cause of your problem. But I can tell you what I consider the two most common causes ...

a. If the modem is only a modem you need to power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) it when switching from the computer to the router.

b. If the modem is actually a modem/router combo it may be using the same LAN IP address range as the Airlink101, and that almost never works without changing one of them.

What is the brand and model of your modem?

Have a Linksys wrt54G2 router. It is listed in my desktop computer under printers and other devices, but when I try to get connectivity, it fails to connect. All the lights on the router are green and blinking except the middle LED light. How do I get connectivity, or do you think there's something wrong with the router? Thanx in advance.

According to this manual you have network activity on all 4 ethernet ports and on the wireless and on the internet port and the router is still going "through its self diagnostic mode during every boot-up."

I'd call that defective. Try to reset it to factory default settings.

I have a similar problem (don't have an additional router though); your problem marked as solved - what was the solution?

Thanks and regards,

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Hi, my main pc has winxp OS and I have just installed a new Lynksys router WRT16ONL and have succeeded in connecting to the internet BUT I am not able to connect my wi-fi devices which are a second pc running ubuntu 12.04 with an attached netgear dongle WG111 v 2 (I have other devices such as ipad and smart phone which I know will work once the 2nd pc connects) In addition the netgear password is five characters long and I could not find any place to enter this code in the Lynksys setup which uses nothing less than eight characters. Hope someone can help me out of my frustration

I was never able to get a Netgear wireless adapter working with Ubuntu, but it was with older versions of Ubuntu and slightly different adapters.

I assume that you are using WPA or WPA2 on the router. If so, does the adapter/driver support that encryption type? I'm 99% confident that it does not support WPA2, and may not work with WPA/WPA2 mixed.

Try first to connect with encryption disabled.

Recently I purchased a new wireless N router, and have moved the older wireless G router downstairs, where I hope to be able bridge a connection between the two. Google results, ironically enough, have suggested Googling instructions on setting such a thing up.

Connected to this computer (which is upstairs) is the new one, a Belkin Wireless N model no. F5D8236-4 Version 1. Downstairs the the old Linksys Wireless G model no. WRT54GS Version 6. I have a friend who works a lot with networking, who is skeptical of the idea, but Googling it has returned hope that it is possible. The main dispute is how.

Here's the setup: This computer is wired to the Belkin router, which is wired into the modem and is also currently hosting the house's wireless network. The Linksys is downstairs wired only to my Xbox 360. My attempts at even trying to find where to configure these routers have proved pathetic, so I've been driven here.

Could this work, and will it work with these two routers? If so, how do I go about it?

I have an unsolvable problem with my router that results in random disconnects from Xbox Live. I want the 360 to bypass my router by plugging it directly into my modem. Is the correct solution to buy an ethernet network switch hub, plug this into the modem and then plug the router and 360 into the hub? Can anyone please advise what I should be using?

Thanks in advance.

A:Modem Connection to 360 and router

no that's not correct. you must use modem--router--otherstuff unless
you want to ONLY use modem--one.box

Hey, so for a long time my family has been using a wireless router (D-Link Model: WBR-1310) I have a laptop, and now an Xbox, and my parents use an acer PC in the room next to mine for their own personal use. I set up the wireless router last yearish, and at that time I didn't put a password on it, although I thought I did. Now I am trying to make this network a security enabled network. (right now it is open and available to all users)

I reseted the router first of course, and then I went into network settings and renamed the network and put a password on it. At the same time I had my laptop on. Both connections were lost and then the one for my parents PC has now come back. But now I cannot connect at all with my laptop or Xbox, and I don't know what to do. Can anybody help me figure this out? I just want to make it so that our wireless connection is safe and secure, it seems changing the network properties on my laptop and pressing connect a thousand times hasn't done anything...
