I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry, but I am not sure what you mean.
Could you explain further - perhaps with a picture to illustrate.

I did post this 9 days ago to be honest. Wasn't able to get a solution

Since then I did a factory settings restore on my laptop out of desperation. It remedied the problems up until today when out of the blue the problem is back. Cannot modify documents in folders. I am transferring folders/docs back and forth from my memory stick, so is window's "inheriting" previous rules about folders and applying it to all folders? If so, how can I remedy? Believe me I've tried following loads of threads on file/folder permission stuff to no avail.

I did get some short-term help last time (like suggestions to drag doc on to desktop, modify it there, then drag back to folder). This works but I don't want to settle for never being able to sort this out.

I've again spent another 2 hrs today (honestly I have) on Google, searching around, including on this site. I've gone into loads of stuff about folders and permissions. Well that's a weird problem I've been having for a couple of days. First, let me introduce where it all started.

So a couple of days ago I messed a bit with Word settings and found out that the defaults can be set by deleting the Normal.dot/Normal.dotm file under %appdata%/Microsoft/Templates. I did that.
However, then I noticed that after exiting Word I get this message (every single time):

If I click Save, nothing happens, Word window with no blank page and only toolbars are visible (then if I try exiting again, same message appears). If I click Don't Save, Word shuts down successfully, but after launching it again and exiting, same thing happens. And it doesn't seem that Word recreates the default Normal template in the Templates folder - there's no such file visible, even with hidden and protected files set to visible.

What is more, the dialog for Save/Save As... doesn't work. Clicking these buttons simply throws me back to the document.

Tried re-installing, repairing... Same.

None of these was something about my situation, but I found this page:

It seems that the "Delete the Word Data registry subkey " was the thing that I needed.

It would be helpful if you could please provide a bit more information, e.g.:
What is the exact error message you get (or a screen shot of the error)?
Is your copy of Office 2010 legit and legal and properly activated?
Have you tried a Repair?
Thanks,

I run a volunteer group and have been donated a number of XP-based PCs with Office 2007 suite. The machines have had little use and are all in good condition. I would like to configure the "save as" function in WORD and PowerPoint so that users can only save any file they have created to an external USB drive (thus preventing files being saved to the hard drives).
If this is not possible can Windows XP be configured so that any file saved to hard drive is deleted as soon as machine is switched off? This would certainly focus user's minds in the future!
Thank you for any help on this.

To do the clean up at reboot one needs to get a third party program such as "DeepFreeze".
See http://www.faronics.com/products/deep-freeze/enterprise/

Most any program can NOT be set as default that a USB device to be set as the place for saving files.
What would you expect to happen if such a device was not found by the program.

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

Choose Open with

Do you see Word in the resulting display?

On Microsoft Word 2010, when you go to either the Open or Save as dialog boxes, you see a folder tree called "Microsoft Word", under which in my computer has Templates. In Microsoft Excel, it has a similar affect, showing "Microsoft Excel". I want to remove this tree from view, and ONLY want to see "Computer" (or "This PC" on Windows 8.1). Is this possible, and if so, how?

Can this be done locally and/or through group policy?

I have a Toshiba A55 laptop. I am running XP Home SP2 and Office Professional 2003 SP2. All utilites function normally with the exception of Word. The file menu shows "save" and "save as" to be disabled (greyed out). It will save with control-S, and I am able to save to any location I want. I am not receiving any error messages. All updates for XP and Office are current. No viruses or other malware. I have seen issues with Ofice SP2 concerning HP systems but they usually either lock up or generate errors. I do not have either of these problems. I have been looking for a solution for a few days to no avail. Any suggestions would be helpful.

A:Word 2003 save/save as disabled

I found my own solution. Apparently, the normal.dot template became corrupted. Deleted the file, and did not let word reload the saved version, creating a new one. Fixed the problem. Wanted to post in case someone else was dealing with the same issue.

Suddenly I have a computer that won't handle and aspx operation properly. A website has a button you click to generate a report, in word doc form. But now instead of opening as a word doc, you're prompted to open or save a .aspx file. The aspx file opens in notepad, but that's part of the problem, because it should be creating and opening a *.docx file not an *docx.aspx file.

This works fine on other computers, and worked fine on this computer until a few days ago.

I have tried:
Mucking around with different security settings in IE,
Looked at file extensions, tried setting them to open aspx with word or with IE,
Tried the aspx file association reg fix on this site.
Tried repairing office
Tried sfc /scannow (found no integrity violations)

Nothing has worked.

I seem to recall figuring this out before, but I can't remember what I did.

Hi,
I may be missing something here but I'm unable to modify or change the RSAT MMC consoles. The best I can do is Save As or create new consoles from scratch.
Example: DHCP (dhcpmgmt.msc)
I add my DHCP servers to this console, close the console and when I re-open it the servers are gone. This is annoying.
If I open it in "Author" I still can't save the changes back. It is owned by the "TrustedInstaller" user short of taking ownership I can't grant myself enough permissions so that it saves my changes.
What am I missing? I expected the various MMC consoles to be seamless. I make changes, their saved. No prompts to Save As, or Save, etc... The previous admin tools for 2003 worked like this, why does RSAT not behave this way?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.

I'm running Word 2013. Up till a week or so it worked fine, but now it freezes completely whenever I try to save or save as a document, new or modified, in my C:\Users\Tom\Documents folder, even though it does seem to save or save as correctly if I choose subfolders in ...documents or other separate folders.

I have tried running Word in safe mode. No help.

I have done a complete repair using control panel/programs...no help. It seemed to have uninstalled MS Office 2013 completely and reinstalled it completely, and nothing improved. One minor problem I have with this is that I've lost my product key from the original version, and I can't retrieve it from Dell, where I bought the machine, so I can't activate the reinstalled MS Office 2013! It'll run till next Tuesday, then it'll be dead. My bad, but that's not what's causing me this grief.

I have checked the hard drive with AVG PCTuneup disk doctor and found no errors. I've defragged with that routine also; no help.

I've tried running Word with and without first launching any browser. The problem occurs whether or not I've launched a browser.

To my untrained eye, it seems as if whenever I try to point Word to my normal ...documents folder, to retrieve a doc stored there so I can work on it, or save a new doc there that I've just created, or "save as" a doc I've retrieved from a different folder, Word can't find that spot on my hard drive. Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

Hi All!

Just wondering if any of you could quickly help me with a problem I'm having.

I am using the BreakOnSection macro (see code below) which breaks up sections in my document and saves them as individual files. But instead of naming files "test_1", "test_2" "test_3" etc. I want to use the first line of each section for the file name.

Note: The first line will always have the same format, but the text will always change. Here is an example of one (without quotes):

"June 20 7pm - Coldplay, GM Place, Vancouver, BC"

Please see the code below to get a feel for what I'm working with, and if any of you could help, that would be greatly appreciated!
Code:
Sub BreakOnSection()
' Used to set criteria for moving through the document by section.
Application.Browser.Target = wdBrowseSection

'A mail merge document ends with a section break next page.
'Subtracting one from the section count stop error message.
For i = 1 To ((ActiveDocument.Sections.Count) - 1)

'Note: If a document does not end with a section break,
'substitute the following line of code for the one above:
'For I = 1 To ActiveDocument.Sections.Count

'Select and copy the section text to the clipboard.
ActiveDocument.Bookmarks("\Section").Range.Copy

'Create a new document to paste text from clipboard.
Documents.Add
Selection.Paste

' Removes the break that is copied at the end of the section, if any.

I have a user that can not save/save as in word 2000. The computer is windows 2000. When you click save or save as nothing happens.

The user can save in any other program.

This is the case on any 2000 machine, if the machine is XP the user can save word files.

I have deleted the users profile on the server(server 2000) and recreated it, still the user has the same problem.

Thanks for any help.

A:Can not save/save as in word.

If another user logs into the same machine, can they save/save as?

If so, then it's a problem with the user's local profile. You would need to delete that and create a new one. (backup any data first)

If it affects all users on the machine, then uninstall office, delete the c:\program files\microsoft office\office? directory (? will be a number, 9, 10, or 11, depending on the version of office (I don't recall what # is for OFfice 2000)), and then reinstall office.

I have a number of files I would like to try and save off of the disk, and/or I would like to know if there is any saving the hard drive for future use. I record music and use adobe programs for freelance artwork. Also there are a number of pictures I'd love to recover (though as far as I know they're backed up on google drive). The .wavs of some recordings were recent and were not backed up in time before the disk crashed.

I apologize, this is lenghty but i'll throw it all out there.

As best as I can remember this is the sequence of events:
My daughter was born three weeks ago, my wife decided to pop in a usb thumbdrive to save baby pictures to my pc (Dell Optiplex755 refurbished, Win7 32 bit, Intel dual core processors, Seagate 7200.12 Barracuda 1TB hardrive).

After she moved the pictures to the computer it froze, and she restarted.

I've been searching for most parts of the net and the forums here and did install/uninstall/restore my notepad, paint and wordpad but nothing seems to work.

When these files are opened, nothing seems to be a problem. But whenever you attempt to save by Ctrl+S, or the by clicking File>Save or File>Save As the program automatically closes. This has been a consistent behavior for the 3 softwares.

I'm using Windows XP 64 bit OS and had no error messages of any sort except that these programs just close themselves when a save attempt is done.

I did virus and malware scans by Avast, ESET Nod & Kaspersky and nothing was detected.

Reinstalling isn't an option for me now as I don't have any optical drive... besides, this may be very hard for me but I'm willing to suffer for the sake of learning.

I'd really appreciate your inputs on this matter.
Thanks for all ideas and help ahead!

A:Notepad, Wordpad, Paint automatically closes whenever save or save as is selected.

How did you uninstall/reinstall the programs without the CD? They're part of the system.

The computer involved is using Windows 7 Pro 64bit and Office Professional Plus 2010.

I am having a problem I cannot find a solution to. I have one user at a clients location that has recently stopped being able to save excel files in their my documents. The my docs is being redirected to a server. The files open correctly and can be edited, but when save is clicked an error box says the document not saved. Using cntrl-shift-i I found the error code to be 100490. I can open any other file and save them just fine. And any new excel documents can be opened and saved correctly. The file can be saved into the same folder using save as is and the document is renamed. However, the user cannot erase the old file.

Doing some digging I made sure the trust zone was enable for the network path and trusted locations on a network were allowed. They had already been configured.

I checked for the windows update that microsoft reported could fix this problem and it was not installed. I went ahead and tried the hotfix, but it would not run because of the missing update.

I tried changing permissions and ownership. This where it gets strange the user has full control enabled on the folder. On any other folder or file I can right click and view the security tab. However, on the excel files when I click the security tab a red line is displayed that says "This file is currently not available for use on this computer." If I try to make a security change on a whole folder any excel fil... Read more

With regard to clearing lists of [recently opened and/or saved] file names in Windows file dialog boxes, Orbital Shark had described the following procedure (from his 01 Nov., '10 post-) How to Clear This Dialog Box ? :

"If you want to selectively clear the Common Dialog file names MRU, you need to delete these two registry keys manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ LastVisitedPidlMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ OpenSavePidlMRU"

My question is as follows (and it is probably a silly one, therefore please bear with me and thank you):

Is the prescribed procedure to delete the *actual keys* ("LastVisitedPidlMRU" & "OpenSavePidlMRU"), or instead to delete the *contents* of those keys? i.e.: Should I select/highlight the key within the left panel of the Regisgtry Editor, and then select delete; or should I select/highlight the key within the left panel, and then select/highlight in the right panel all the contents of that respective key, and then delete all those contents (not the actual key itself) indicated in the right panel?

Thanks much for your patience and for your help! Win

A:Residual File Names in Save/Save As Dialog Boxes

Hello Windough, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Deleting those actual keys would work best. If you like, the tutorial below will help you do this automatically instead of having to manually do it in regedit.Common Dialog Boxes - Clear Dropdown List of Recent Files History
In addition, you might look at this tutorial if you do not want to have this history kept.Common Dialog Boxes - Enable or Disable Dropdown List of Recent Files

While I have sent feedback into Microsoft, I thought I might post here aswell.
In IE9 when you click a download, a pop-up from the bottom asks 'Do you want to open or save file.xxx from x.com' then gives you the option to 'Open' 'Save' or 'Cancel'
During testing, we found that users would just click 'Save' then not know where the file they downloaded went. After explaining that it was in the downloads, they complained that previously they just chose where to save the file and it saved there. Now they
have to open downloads and copy paste to the location.
We could teach the users to always drop down and select 'Save as' but I can tell you it would be a lot easier if there was a group policy, or a default we can change so the default was 'Save as'
Other than that, I have no complaints :D.

Firstly, my employee's are running into a problem where they cant save their files because the file is "in use" according to windows 7.

What i've narrowed it down to is the fact that windows uses the files to display details or even a preview of the file whether it be a thumbnail or a window pane preview of the file or even simple details barring it from saving the file after it is opened, edited, and ready to be saved.

I have disabled all the obvious frills that might be conflicting such as: "file previews, show thumbnails etc." just cant quite get this resolved.

Also, windows 7 and its short term memory loss wont allow some of my employees to save their favorite folder views (I understand that windows 7 tried to implement a more functional window mode, allowing users to have multiple view for their different folders) but the "pick one and stick with it option" of "Apply to all folders" the obvious approach doesnt work. Or merely works for a few days then reverts. I've seen regedits about changing the "bag size" and such but that looks a little more involved than i want to get with the registry, also potentially affecting something in the process.

Any tips?

Is there any way to set the default save location folder for downloads in IE8 to the last folder that the same file type was saved in? It makes no sense to default to a single folder and have to browse through to the desired folder for every single download, so I assume there has to be an option somewhere.

A:Setting default save location to last save folder

Limited choice here. Pictures (right click, save picture as) will save to My Pictures. Else, right click save will save to the last folder used.

No other option by file type.

But,you can do this... Adding Entries to the Standard Context Menu

Hi,

We have one user with a really strange issue. When accessing Office 2010 application on Windows 7 the save button is missing from the save-as box.

I have tried various different things to get it to come back i.e. re-installing office, installing latest updates but still nothing. I have also tried to see if changing the size of the save as box brings it back but it doesn't.

Originally the save button wasn't visible at all and after re-creating the user profile on Windows 7 it is now partially visible (as you can see in the screenshot attached).

Anyone come across this issue before? if so, does anyone know how to solve it so that the save button is completely visible and working?

Thanks in advance.

I have a problem when using Excel 2010 in that when I 'Right Click' a cell to change something like Fill or Border etc, the Format box is hidden behind the work book? I have found that by switching to Outlook and then Minimizing it, the Format box is shown. However, when I click anything to try and change, the box disappears again behind the work book? The same thing happens if I try 'Save As'? Very frustrating!

Enter the .reg key into your registry by double clicking on it and then navigate to the said folder or object you are trying to save to and right click on it and "take ownership" of the folder or object. Then try and save it again. Hope this helps,

Running an Access 2010 DB shared on a network drive. Intermittently, am unable to save PDF file attachments. Get a message that reads: 'Could not update; currently locked' after having added the attachment an clicking OK. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A:Solved: Can't save attachment in Access 2010

Thanks, MarkWillium. That may be why the problem is intermittent. What I'm unclear about is why the DB or record is locked at all. I'm pretty much a novice with Access, but my understanding is that in Access 2010, in a shared environment, there is no record-locking...multiple users may create and modify records at the same time. In this situation, the DB is being used to create/store records for a corporate call center. As such, speed is essential in creating records and, as necessary, attaching documents. Therefore, if over a 5-minute timeframe I'm unable to attach a document, I pretty much have to let it go and move to the next call. The attachments are a 'need to have' rather than 'nice to have', hence the problem. I suppose it's possible that some random user is attempting to 'Save' a record (which is unnecessary, and is really saving the DB structure anyway)...?

After that the explorer cant open or save a downloaded file
The dialog box is greyed and disabled
I tried everything like unistalling, reinstalling.resetting ,disabling norton, changing relative setting in explorer the result is nothing
All other browsers are ok
I believe the cause is a setting in registry that doesnts allow explorer to open the dialog box

Same results with all OFFICE applications.

I terminated the program.
The hang was in the administration section.

I am having a little trouble with Office 2010 and saving to SkyDrive.

Basically I can't. I click on the backstage/Save and Send/Save to Web. The my Skydrive is signed in and I can see my folders.

Then I click on the Save As button and Word or Excel fall into "not responding" hole for a few minutes and then I get an error box saying Word cannot save to blah.blah.live.docs.com/blah.blah/word.docs/blah.blah.blah.

Trouble is if I create a document in the web apps and save to skydrive and then click on the edit in Word button, Word opens up, I do a bit of writing, then clicking Save, saves it back to Skydrive.

So why not when I start the file in word and try and save as?
