Linksys Connection Woes - Default Gateway, DNS, etc..

Q: Linksys Connection Woes - Default Gateway, DNS, etc..

Here's the story.. My roommate's computer, both of our phones, my 3DS, etc., can all connect to the Linksys Router, but my laptop has issues galore. It will connect, but I'll randomly lose connection. Sometimes it'll reconnect right away, but a lot of the times it will connect with limited availability. Its almost as though it gets stuck on "Identifying..". When I run diagnosis it mentions default gateway issues a lot, and occasionally IP Configuration.

Sometimes all the NETSH reset stuff (winsock, ipv4, etc.) will get it back up and running, but not always.

Here's the weird part: This router (our apartment) is literally the ONLY connection I've had problems with. If I go anywhere else I can easily connect.

Here's my ipconfig/all: (I think while I was tethered to phone)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Linksys Connection Woes - Default Gateway, DNS, etc..

You might want to try using the latest drivers from Intel dated Dec. 17 2013, the top linked driver is the "driver only" without the connection software, try uninstalling the driver and Intel connection software from "add remove programs" then install only the driver.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...eng&iid=dc_rss

If this driver don't help you may want to consider updating the firmware on this router since it appears to be the only router you can't connect to consistently.

I have a Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Gateway Model No.WAG54G. It connects to my ISP fine but the wireless connection to my laptop keeps dropping or has limited connection,I've been though the settings and can't see a problem with them & I'm using 64-bit Wep!!!

Anybody got any ideas???

A:Linksys Wireless Gateway Dropping Connection

update the router to the latest firmware and update the driver for your wireless adapter to the latest version. Also make sure that something called IEEE 802.1x is not enabled. Might also want to check for radio interference and change the channel on the router, make sure it is 1, 6 or 11. 6 is the common default of most manufacturers so I'd choose 11.

I'm running Windows 7- 64bit, comcast internet, netgear router. Ethernet connection.
So recently my pc started getting super slow, and my a/v was showing all these threats were being blocked. I went in to defense mode and downloaded many a antivirus/malware removal program trying to rid my pc of the plague. Along the way I installed a windows driver update for my display and since then my Internet has stopped working. I've tried the usual router/modem reset, disable/uninstall network adapter all to no avail. I also tried my pdanet tether from my phone and even though it says it connects the little exclamation point still mocks me on the connection status. I plugged my laptop into the same ethernet cable and it works fine so I'm crossing that off the list. No device conflicts.
I've tried system restore but no luck. No luck in safe mode with networking. I'm guessing it has to do with the default gateway being blank but I'm really at a loss.

If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it, I'm just about ready to format but I'd really rather not. Thanks for any help!

A:No connection/default gateway

Also to clarify, I don't have all those programs on my pc anymore. I deleted all the antivirus/malware programs to make sure they weren't causing problems.

Hello everyone, I'm hoping that you can help me. I've lurked this forum for a long time.
This is a wired connection to the router/modem and I have also tried it on a different router.
I'll give a short version, then the lengthy background and what I have tried.

Short version: Any download of any size seems to trigger the connection to be dropped until I launch the trouble shooter which then resets the local area connection and gives the message in the subject plus "Fixed".

I noticed this happening with videos (any - CNN, Vimeo, YouTube, MSNBC, whatever), and then decided to test it by launching a game (Guild wars 2) because I KNEW it needed a patch. Sure enough, as soon as the download started - connection lost. Downloaded an extensive PDF - connection lost.

If I maintain just a browsing connection for text, I don't SEEM to have a problem. I just know what absolutely triggers it.

Background - This is a custom built rig that has always been rock solid. It has been upgraded through the years. Two weeks ago, I started getting BSODs which happened at different times: 5 minutes on, an hour, a day... and the reasons were varied: PFN_List Corrupt, memory management, others. SFC Check and Disk Check both found all sorts of errors. In the meantime, I tested with memtest86+ and discovered my RAM was bad. So, I fixed that, and also did a Repair Install with Win7 SP1 (found through here, thank you) as my original disk was Win7, without SP1 and it would... Read more

A:Default Gateway Not Available - Connection keeps dropping

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Have you also updated the latest network adapter's driver? I don't know if I have missed this out in your post.

Have you changed the network cable? What category are you using? Cat5, Cat5e or Cat6? It is labeled on the cable itself.

Also, what type of network card or adapter are you using? make and model? Is this integrated or it's a PCI or PCIe card?

I have done a Google search on this. Problem is, nothing I have tried so far has worked permanently. I am not even sure if the problem is my computer or my network. So here it is:

I have an Acer Aspire laptop with Windows 8.1. My main modem is located downstairs in my house, with a laptop connected to it (it works fine, never any issues). Before, I had a router wired upstairs to connect my laptop to. Here's the problem - it doesn't matter if I am using a wireless or a wired connection, I get a limited connection. I will have Windows troubleshoot the problem, and it always says that the problem was that the Default Gateway is not Available, and it will say that it is fixed. However, this randomly happens over and over anywhere from 2 minutes to 20 minutes after I just "fixed" it. I have just recently tried running a wire across my house to plug directly into the modem. This worked for a while, but the same thing started happening. Keep in mind, there is also a laptop wired directly to the modem downstairs in my house. I believe (but I haven't checked this in a while) that if I connect to the WiFi from my modem downstairs, it works fine. Another twist - I'm pretty sure I had this same issue occur on the old laptop that I had. So I am just flat-out confused.

I have heard that this is a Windows 8.1 issue, and I have heard that this could be an ISP issue (I have Comcast, if it matters). I just have no idea what the problem is or how to fix it. I have been trying so man... Read more

My internet connection keeps dropping, when I run the diagnostics it comes back showing the problem as the "default gateway is not available" and showing it being fixed, but then it will happen again a few minutes later. I have been Googling the issues in hopes of finding a solution but nothing I have tried from what I've found has worked. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L645 and I'm using a wireless connection to a Motorola SBG6580, this is the first time I've had this particular issue since purchasing the computer almost 2 years ago.

Sounds like a router/modem issue to me.
Have you power cycled it lately?
Do you have a modem plugged into that motorola or is it a combo unit?

Hi everyone-
I am having a very annoying problem while on my laptop with my internet connection. I will be connected online via wifi and the internet stops working. I trouble shoot the problem via windows and it says the default gateway is not available and it fixes the problem and voila internet working again. Every once in a while it also will talk about the connection point not working and it resets during trouble shooting and its fixed again. Its getting to be very annoying because when I first purchased the laptop (less than a year ago) it wasn't a problem, but now it happens every 10 minutes or less (ever since I moved)! I have tried re-installing the drivers, making sure my computer had been updated and turning off my Mcafee firewall- none of the options made it work correctly. My computer's internet doesn't work, but the other laptops that use wifi work just fine still, so I know its just my computer. I know there has been a few posts about this problem, but I still haven't been able to find a solution for my computers problem yet. I was hoping for more technologically advance help than I can figure out since I've reached my last idea option. Any help or ideas would be helpful and greatly appreciated- thanks in advance!!

So I have had this problem for several days and it is starting to frustrate me. I lose connection to internet randomly. It can be as frequent as every few minutes, or it can happen once in a day. I fix it by clicking "troubleshoot problems". It resets something, and fixes it for some time with a message: The default gateway is not available.
Any suggestions? Here is a screenshot of my ipconfig/all. Btw I don't use a router.

A:Randomly losing connection/ default gateway not available

Since according to your image file attachment it appears that your PC is using a publicly addressable IP Address, we can only assume that you are plugged directly into the device that was provided by your ISP. If that is not the case please advise in future posts. Otherwise perhaps this issue would better be addressed with you provider. Perhaps a call to them might help in determining if they have any known issues with Windows 7 OS, or the presence of an IPv6 device on their network, or issues with Gigabit Network Cards and their provided device, etc. The DHCP lease times are relatively short (2 hours) this may be exacerbating the problem by I wouldn't think so provided everything else is working optimally. Additionally I would seriously consider disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP on such a network just as a precaution.

Hi,
Firstly i have searched this forum plus other sites on the internet and cannot find a solution that works for me.
I am using an ethernet connection to my router (Netgear WNR2000 supplied by virgin media). I am running windows 7 professional (i have just reinstalled and this is when the problems started, before everything was fine).
I have an ASUS Formula Crosshair II motherboard and im using the onboard ethernet port, which is nvidia/nforce.

Every so often, seems to be random timing, my LAN connection will drop and when using the troubleshooter it says no default gateway was found and it fixes it. Then i can be ok again for a little while. As mentioned above this only started when i reinstalled windows 7. My old installed worked fine.
I have tried reinstalling/updating the drivers, i have also tried letting windows choose the drivers, both have the same result.

In the event logger when i get disconnects i get an error similar to this:

A:No Default Gateway - Ethernet connection keeps dropping

My first reply did not post properly, so this is the shorter version because I am lazy and I do not want to retype

i had the same thing happen to me a month ago after changing routers.

Hard Reboot (press and hold reset buttons for 90 seconds , differs per device, then unplug everything and rework your ethernet jacks too after your reset your devices)
*Modem (remove battery if there is one, press and hold reset buttons for 90 seconds , differs per device )
*Router (press and hold reset buttons for 90 seconds , differs per device)
also try this if you dont want to call your ISP for a new IP
*then unplug everything and rework your ethernet jacks too after your reset your devices

Another method would be winsock reset and the following below
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

if that doesn't work, call your ISP and they will fix the problem

Sorry for the quick reply with lack of depth. gotta go to work.

Hi DextrousDave!

Before I can advise a possible solution to your problem I need a couple bits of information first!

When you say you are connected to a Domain is that through a Windows Active Directory domain or are you connected to a workgroup? This is important to know as it can affect what DNS servers will need to be set up in order to complete this.

Secondly is the 3G connection able to connect to the network on its own through an ethernet cable with its own IP address or is it an adapter which must be connected to a machine via USB or another interface?

Many thanks for your co-operation,
Josh!

Start by deciding how you would like to connect the computer to a network--by dial up or ethernet or wireless or by USB to a USB broadband modem.

Then you have to find a public hotspot or contract for service from an Internet Service Provider.

Hi I have a win 7 netbook that I recently got and for some reason it suddenly cannot keep a connection to the internet. A:Cannot hold a wireless internet connection (default gateway not available)

and welcome to the Forum

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

After a while, however (this varies anywhere from a day to a week), there will be a small hiccup on the connection, and then something fails in the Acquiring Network Address stage. My computers will get an IP, but they will not get the default gateway or DNS server.

I say computers because this happens on both my PC and laptop. This issue does NOT, however, occur for anyone else in the household.

I have tried a plethora of fixes, from simple computer reboots to fiddling with all sorts of settings, and nothing works to reestablish the connection. My father has also tried fixing it, to no avail. I have to go and reset my router, which also interrupts TV service, because it is through AT&T U-Verse. Needless to say, this does not make other people in the household very happy, and I really shouldn't have to be resetting my router every couple of days like that.

My PC uses a Netgear WG111v3 adapter and is Windows XP. My laptop has on-board Wifi and is Windows XP Professional. I am not sure why I am the only person in the household that experiences this issue. Could certain programs like AIM be causing problems?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

For the past two weeks I keep getting the error message of "Default Gateway is not available," only way to temporarily fix it has been to restart the computer each time. The intervals of the net crashes can range from 3-7 hours of connect time to even just five minutes after fixing the issue. I've called my ISP (Charter Communications) and they claim it is not an issue on their end and must be with my computer. The Computer was bought in Nov. 2011 and is a Gateway DX4860. Any help out there would be much appreciated.

would you post the following tests when its working OK and then repeat ALL the tests when it disconnects and make sure you also tells which tests posted are for what condition

if you are also connected by wireless include the xirrus screen shots

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if separate, the make and exact model of the modem

Also please make a note of the status of the light on the modem and on the router when working normally - post back here and then when disconnected post the status of the lights here again if changed

When I log into a VPN through windows, I am no longer able to access the internet. I have tried the solutions posted in this community regarding unchecking the "use default gateway" option. Doing this allows me to have internet
access after I log into the VPN but I am no longer able to access the network shared files. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. Can someone help me?

A:No internet after VPN connection. Unchecking the "use default gateway" solution does not completely fix my poblem

Hi ,

To access internet and VPN, you can configure the VPN connection to use the default gateway on the remote network. This setting overrides the default gateway settings that you specify in your Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings.

To resolve the issue, you need to make the following configurations.

Step 1: You need to contact your administrator of the VPN Server to configure the Server that is running routing and remote access to use a static IP address pool.

Step 2: Disable Use default gateway on remote network setting in the VPN connection item on the client computer.

1.go to Control Panel (small icons)>network and sharing center>Change adapter settings which is in the left panel.
2.Right-click the VPN connection that you want to change, and then click
Properties.
3.Click the
Networking tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the Components checked are used by this connection list, and then click
Properties.
4.Click
Advanced, and then click to clear the Use default gateway on remote network check box.
5.Click OK, click OK, and then click OK.

Step 3: Connect to the Server That Is Running Routing and Remote Access

Step 4: Add a static route on the client use route print command.

More information about the detailed steps, please see

Hello, I've been lurking for some time now but just made an account to get some help with an issue I've been having.

Some basic info before I start typing
I'm using a wired connection through At&t Uverse, no idea what the router model is, run though ethernet cable through and through. No Anti-Virus software, although I did use Malwarebytes and AlYac in sync for a while, before uninstalling them part-way though the problem.

That's my ipconfig /all settings, the skype icon with the resetting symbol is how I know my internet has stopped working at the time

Soon afterwards, I'll right click my Local Area Connections under Network Connection in my control panel and click Diagnose, and this is what ends up happening. And thus my connection is fixed for a period of time.

The time it works seems to be fairly random, from instant disconnects to up to 2 hours of working time, but I've noticed that it seems to happen most often when I'm gaming online, playing Path of Exile or League of Legends. Most of the time, I'll also be skyping with someone on video chat, so that could have an impact on the situation.

This has been happening intermittently before as well, the rig itself is a 2 year old custom rig, AMD FX 8350 cpu, AMD Radeon 7870, and MSI 970A-G46 Motherboard. The earliest occurrence was about a year ago, the same issue sprung up for a week and never came back. This time around it's been doing so for about 2 weeks and nothing I've done seems to have fixed the issue.

I have a Motorola SB5100 modem connected to a Netgear WGR614 v7 router. I then have my Xbox 360 and Desktop connected to the router. With this setup, there will be periods of time in which my internet will disconnect, but all the lights on both devices will stay lit. When I disconnect my Desktop from my router and plug it directly into my modem, and this issue appears, when I run the Network Troubleshooting on Windows 7 it tells me "The default gateway is not available."

This issue has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks now. I've placed multiple calls to my ISP and had several tech visits, all to no avail. I've also tried searching the internet for fixes, of which none worked. I have tried:

-Flushing DNS
-Manually setting default gateway in command prompt
-Unplugging my modem and plugging it back in
-Setting a static IP
-Turning off all TCP/UDP offload settings on my NIC
-Updating my NIC's drivers
-Removing and reinstalling my NIC's drivers
-Installing a NEW NIC, to no avail
-Replacing the modem
-Replacing the ethernet and coax cables
-Turning off IPv6

If anyone has had this similar problem and has advice/a fix, I'm open to suggestions. Attached is IPCONFIG and a HijackThis log.

Is this an ISP provided router, or your own??? If it is your router, try updating the firmware first... I didnt see that in the list of what you tried. If it is an ISP provided router... DEMAND A NEW ONE!

Did you reboot PC or release/renew IP after trying this switch? It sounds like maybe you didnt and the PC was looking for the router at the Gateway IP!

I've had Windows 7 for about 6 months, and have been getting an intermittent problem where my internet cuts out. The network icon shows a yellow exclamation mark and I have to right click on it and Troubleshoot Problems, which then resets/repairs the connection and everything's okay.

Here's some details from the troubleshooting report:

Okay, it seems that a lot of people (not just Windows 8 users) are having the same problem with internet connection. I recently bought a computer off a friend that he had recently installed Windows 8. Despite already not being satisfied with the new OS, I've now begun to encounter this problem:
My internet connection worked fine at my house to begin with, but now I can't seem to make the internet connection last. Sometimes it lasts for up to around 20 minutes, but sometimes a matter of 5 seconds before dropping out again. Each time it drops, I troubleshoot and without fail it says "Default gateway is not available", but says it's fixed, and the internet works fine until it proceeds to drop out again. Sometimes it has ALSO come up with "DNS server is not responding", but that never says it's been fixed, only detected, and also "Problem with wireless adapter or access point", which does say is fixed.
My laptop is Dell l502x, the wireless adapter is Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6230 and I
m running Windows 8. I've tried un-checking the box to save power or whatever, and manually changing the IP addresses in the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) properties. I have spent about 7 hours of my day reading other forum posts like this but have still had no success. Please try to help me!

Hi all! I have home network consisting of 4 Desktops (1 W7, 2XP, 1 Vista)and 1 Laptop (W7). All connect to WRT110. 2 via cable, two via WUSB100 and the laptop via build in WiFi device.

The actual problem: whenever the Vista computer connects via one WUSB100 (after a reboot or on initial start) everybody else gets kicked off the net until I manually reset the router. Then everything is OK until that one computer (Vista) re-starts/reboots.
It's not the WUSB itself. It works just fine on any other computer. The drivers for it are fresh from the linksys site.

I'm completely clueless. Did anyone ever experienced a similar behavior and perhaps came across a remedy?

We have AT&T U-Verse at my house. It's a 2Wire gateway, model # 3800HGV-B. The SSID is kolalahome and it is broadcasting.

I just installed a Linksys WMP54GS v1.1 card in my tower (it was in another PC before). It's installed correctly. It can see every other flipping wifi connection in the neighborhood but it can't see the gateway in my house.

I have a US Robotics USB wifi adapter and the crappy 2Wire USB adapter that AT&T gave me that can both see and connect to the gateway just fine. I'd prefer not to use these however because I hate the freaking US Robotics software (and the USB dongle's plastic is physically cracked and broken in a few places from use) and the 2Wire adapter wont stay connected for more than an hour before it resets its connection (I know it's the adapter and not the gateway causing this because it does it for every computer it's plugged into on anyone's wifi network, not just the one here at my house).

Does anyone have any ideas for how to fix this issue? I've moved the antenna around - that doesn't help. And as I said, I can see all our neighbor's wifi routers/gateways/etc, just not mine here at the house. I don't know if it's the Linksys card, or some config thing on the 2Wire gateway.

On the tower, I'm running WinXp Pro SP3. AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core, 2.41ghz, 2gb ram.

You likely have problems because that unit needs to be connected to something at boot up. If your PC is switched off, to what is the router connected? How was it originally installed? I assume you used the LinkSys install disc, and it worked upon initial install. What has happened since then.

A:Need help configuring Linksys router/gateway

Depends on what you want. If you want a 2nd NAT layer to protect the devices connected to the second router then cascade them (LAN port of 1st router to WAN of 2nd). If you want everything to be on one LAN the following is good and proven.

JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

Linksys router WRT54GX2 is configured with an IP address of 10.0.0.253 and has a static internet IP of 10.0.0.254 which is the ISP. However, all clients on DHCP get a gateway address of 10.0.0.253 which doesnt allow the client PC to reach the internet. The Gateway has to be 10.0.0.254. I attempted to make the change in advanced routing with a static router. 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.254
It wouldnt take this change. I then went to the wireless device and attempted to make a static router using:
route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.254 metric 1
This worked, but the laptop travels and the gateway will probably change. The fix needs to be on the router, any ideas? Can the router pass trafic from its ip (10.0.0.253) to the ISP device (10.0.0.254)?

hi,

At work we currently have a Linksys AG241 4port ADSL2Gateway which works fine but two of us in the office have laptops which we bring in from time to time and other managers who come here from time to time also have laptops and need the internet.

In one of the cupboards here we found a Netgear DG834G v2 wireless router. Now i thought that if i plugged a network cable from the linksys to the netgear and switched the wireless on then it would pick up which it did at first but then it went off and on and off and on and its very unreliable and currently hasnt worked for a long time.

My question is are there any settings i should have put into the netgear router to make it more stable or work? I did google it and found that possibly setting the netgear as a access point could be the key to the problem but i cant see how to do that in the netgear settings.

any help very much appriciated

Make sure that the LAN address of the Netgear matches the LAN of the Linksys and doesn't conflict with any existing devices.
Disable the DHCP server on the Netgear.
Make sure you plug the network cable to one of the LAN ports of the Netgear router.

It was all okay earlier in the week but I noticed the other day that all my .rtf files would all suddenly open in MS Word '07. I tried to change the settings in the Folder Options>File Types, select .RTF extension>Change>select Jarte from OpenWith box>OK.....but the Folder Options dialogue box does not show the "Apply" button. Is there a way to use my Linksys router between my two laptops and my gateway to provide the laptops with Internet, without the router having to be plugged into a phone jack?

I think what I need to do is install DD-WRT on my Linksys router first, but I'm unsure of where to go next. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
