P70 Lenovo Settings Battery Charge Threshold

Q: P70 Lenovo Settings Battery Charge Threshold

I've been troubleshooting slightly higher than expected power usage on my P70. Yesterday, the Lenovo Settings app Battery Charge Threshold displayed a slider that I could adjust.To-day, it does not. There was both a "Runtime Application Reconfiguration" for the Lenovo Power Manager to-day and Lenovo System Interface Driver install/reconfiguration mentioned in the Reliability Monitor. I'm looking at a battery that's sitting at 75% (not charging)- when it should be charging to 80%.Any ideas? I'd like to have a charging threshold.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Not sure where I'd submit a bug report, has anyone else experienced the following? I have my charging thresholds set to 80% in Lenovo Companion for my T470. However, it seem like half the time it will end up charging one or both batteries to 100%. What seems to happen is it charges to 80%, and it might sit there for a little while, and then a battery creeps to 81%, at which point it then gets charged to 100%. I'm assuming the code behind the threshold portion of the program is saying if charge == threshold rather than if charge >= threshold to determine when to cut the charging off.

My P51 battery is set to start charging when below 80% and stop charging at 95%.  (Lenovo Companion> Hardware Settings> Power> Battery Charge Threshold> Start Charging When Below 80%> Stop Charging at 95%).  I have my P51 plugged in all the time.  The battery always stays at 95% charged, it never reduces down to below 80% and then automatically recharges back up to 95%.  Obviously the P51 will run the battery down when unplugged and then when plugged back in it will recharge back up to 95% capacity and stay there. My older T530 had the same settings as my new P51 does but it honors the charging perameters  set by the T530's Lenovo Companion's Charging Threshold....The battery charge gradually reduces to below 80% and then it automatically recharges back up to 95%...Thus "exercising the battery".                       My question is two fold...1.  Why doesn't the P51 perform the same way that the T530 does using the same Charging Thresholds?2.  Isn't it beneficial for a Lithium Battery to vary it's charge vs. staying charged always at the same level? Curious...Altoid666

My guess is that the power management works the same.  Probably, the T530's cells are slowly losing charge over time and when it gets below 80% it charges.  The new battery cells probably lose charge also, but MUCH more slowly.  When it gets below 80%, it will charge.  If you want to vary the charge level, unplug it for a few minutes, occasionally.  I think Lithium cells degrade over time, but I think the degredation speed has more to do with ambient temperature and number of recharge cycles.

It's great that Lenovo Vantage cares about the lifespan of our batteries and offers us a choice of charge threshold.  But it offers no guidance what maximum level to set, except that it should be less than 100%.  Lenovo must have studied the effect of maximum charge on battery lifespan, and I wish it would share that information with us.  Higher maximum offers a convenience for most users, but they might be willing to trade some of that convenience for some increase in battery lifespan.  We need data in order to decide.  For example, does even setting the maximum at 95% have significant livespan advantage vs. setting maximum at 100%?  Without knowing such things we're just bumbling in setting battery charge threshold.

Hi! I have X1C 5th 20HR. I was using it with the Windows 10 Pro which came built in. I was using it with the battery charge threshold option (95%).After that, I switched to Ubuntu and clean installed it. I tried to change it (charge threshold) also with Ubuntu, but I failed. The battery was only charging up to 94 % all the time. I was okay with it.Yet, after several months, I had to change back to Windows. Now I have Win10 Pro again, but this time, whenever I try to set up a threshold, it is set for several seconds, and after that, it turns itself off automatically. I tried it like 30 times already with a different threshold, with different levels of battery charge, almost with an empty battery, but no result. Is this behavior expected? How can I fix it? I will attach my attempt as GIF file

I have tried to adjust the battery charging thresholds for my L720 using Power Manager 8. The idea is to preserve the battery by charging only between 46% and 50%. The system accepts these settings and shows them when the pointer hovers over the power manager in the toolbar, but forgets them every time the computer goes into standby or hibernation. This makes the settings pointless. I am running Windows 10 and believe that both Windows and the power manager are the latest versions available.

Hi,I just activated battery "charge threshold" mode (with the default 80-85%). Let's say I need to charge the battery to 100% once a week, how do I do that without changing the threshold in Vantage? Thank you!

A:How to do a full charge when "charge threshold" mode is activated

You can turn off chargin threshold.  It should fully charge.  Then turn back on charging threshold afterwards.  I've done that on Thinkpads before.  Turn off charging threshold and once charged to 100% for a out of office business appointment then turn back on charging threshold.  A little error message pops up in vantage that something to the effect charging threshold wont take effect until battery level is below threshold limit.  The thresholds are still stored from when you turn charging threshold off and back on in Vantage.

Hello everyone, I have a small doubt and will love to get some quick solutions on it.

My laptop battery is almost dead. I had purchased it almost 2 years back and now it gives me a battery backup of just around 40 minutes. So most of the time I have to keep the charger connected. To be honest, I don't find it safe to connect the charger all the time as the battery may get further damaged due to over-charging.

My question is that is there any software which would stop my charger from charging the battery till say around 30% and when the battery drains to 30%, the charging resumes automatically. When completed (reaches 100%), it stops charging again (but the charger is still connected) and then waits for the battery to drain to 30% and restarts the process.

This will not only help me prevent the over-charging issue but also will save my little time and energy that is wasted in disconnecting and re-connecting the charger again and again.

Any kind of help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Abhishek Sharma

Hi,I bought a new Lenovo Z580 this past June. Shortly after I began using it, a system message popped up explaining to me that since I often have my laptop plugged in, it would conserve battery life if I let the system change my settings so that the battery didn't fully charge -- this would save battery life over the longterm and I would be free to change the setting whenever I wanted to. Well, this has been the biggest mistake ever. I now essentially have a desktop because I cannot find any setting that allows me to change the battery to fully charge (it only charges to 40 or 50%). There isn't any mention of this feature in the user guide materials that I can find and none of the Power Options allow me to change the battery charge capacity. PLEASE HELP! I am stuck with a brand new "laptop" that can barely be unplugged for an hour, and this is the most frustrating, awful setting I have ever seen in a computer. Thank you so much to anyone who can help. Cora

Hi all,
I have recently purchased a D430 laptop that comes with Vista. I found that there is no way I can set the charging scheme (i.e. charge only when battery power falls to xx%, etc that I found in my old IBM one). I don't want it to cycle at high percentages as it would degrade the battery fast. Removing the battery is not a good solution - it seems this model is designed to have the battery attached all the time.
Any suggestions?

Okay so I have a 6 month old G51-35 Laptop that I've been using for gaming. Then earlier this morning when I was playing, the battery went down to 25%. I plugged it in and it didn't charge. I wondered why, and then I thought the power in the outlet was just not flowing so I'll just plug it into a different one later, and as soon as it hit 10% I panicked. I kept searching up solutions, but nothing popped up. So I then told my brother, by the time the laptop was at 1%, and he did some tests on the laptop. A couple hours later he told me that he doesn't know what the problem is, and so I started really freaking out. I searched up the prices for a new battery pack, but there wasn't anything for the g51-35. I then looked at the laptop prices, and it was a whole load of bull because the laptop itself cost $559. My parents would kill me if they found out, but I don't know what to do next. I think the laptop is overheated, but I don't have the tools to be able to clean it. Please help. Thanks.

I bought a new battery for my X140e Laptop. It fits perfectly, and the computer runs on the new battery. But it will not charge. At the moment the meter indicates "37% available (plugged in, not charging). " Have scoured the Internet, tried various fixes, including shutting the laptop down, taking out the battery, holding the off button down for 10 - 30 seconds, still no joy. I also often get "The battery installed is not supported by the system and will not charge." But it always boots (Windows 7) and runs fine, except it just won't charge the battery.  I confess, it's an aftermarket battery, not a Lenovo battery. But how can that company stay in business if their batteries never work? Any advice warmly welcomed!  Cheers, Jim

Hey Lenovo Forum:

I'm having a battery charging problem that seems slightly different from any on this forum so far. I just acquired a T430 running Windows 7 (64-bit) like a charm. After a few issues with the audio drivers, everything has been running smoothly.

Abruptly, yesterday, when I plugged it into the wall socket (the same socket that it had sucessfully charged on earlier) it failed to charge. Thinking it was the outlet, I tested it. The outlet and adapter are both working fine (the adapter powers the computer no problem with the battery removed from the system). The lock switch on the battery is in the propper position (i've tried both). The battery is not overheated (it's cool to the touch). I tried removing everything and holding the power button (apparently that discharges some built up charge in the system) then reconnecting the battery and AC adapter, nothing.

I just downloaded the power manager which (when the laptop is, in fact, running off of AC power (the battery charge indicator hasn't draining in hours of continuous use) reads:

Everything was fine, until I turned my computer on this morning and realized it wasn't storing power. A:Lenovo Y40 Battery wont charge.

In response to customer reports of unexpected battery gauge behavior on Y40-70 and Y40-80 laptops, Lenovo determined the battery gauge software is performing as expected. The unusual gauge results being reported are a reflection of the battery reaching end of life.

Lenovo has released a Service TIP to assist customers with obtaining battery replacements under warranty, or if out of warranty, to find a replacement battery from Lenovo-approved vendors. The Service TIP can be found here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/sf16-I0023

The part numbers for Y40-70/80 batteries are:
Y40 SP/A L13M4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500248
Y40 LG L13L4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500249 substitute part 121500251

To determine which battery came with your Y40 notebook, instructions for removing the bottom cover can be found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual pdf here. An alternate to opening your system (which does not void warranty) is to search for batteries using the model/product number located on the bottom cover.

I am driven crazy by Battery Charge settings on T440 (Windows 10). It charges internal and external battery to 80% whatever I do. I can't change this (for example to increase level so as to maximise battery life when going on a trip). The controls in Lenovo Settings have no effect - ON/OFF, changing thresholds all do nothing. I have looked in the Registry and changed the Start and Stop Values for the specific batteries and also disabled both Start and Stop charge control - this has no effect after a system Reset although the new Registry settings are there. The same 80% battery thresholds are used when the device is switched off which must surely mean that it is not software controlled and some settings must have been passed to to the battery or charging system hardware. As far as I know I have the latest versions of Lenovo Settings, Power Manager etc. The fact that the registry settings are ignored leaves me nothing else to try. Dear Sir  Welcome to Lenovo Community first of all lets do small troubleshooting steps, if its working ok if no so you have to deliver your device to the Service center to replace the battery if it still under warranty. ( find the list of service center link at the end of the message )if you do not have the power manager or power management you can download it from the below link:http://support.lenovo.com/eg/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Lenovo-Y-Series-laptops/Y40-80/downloa...after installing you have an option inside called battery gauge reset, you have to make it night when u do not use the laptop cause this operation will take more than 6 hours to full charge the battery then difull charge then full charge again to refresh your battery, after you do that try your machine, if the battery still drains fast so you can visit the nearest service center to your place. https://support.lenovo.com/eg/en/contactus/supportphonelist Best Of Luck

Hello, I have a much-beloved Flex 3 maybe 10 months old.First question: The battery says it's charging, but it's not actually charging. I"m guessing the battery's shot? I don't have the tools to open the thing up and try disconnecting the battery yet. Second question: Assuming it's dead, is there any problem with runnning the laptop just on the power adaptor? I did see that for other models this seems to be ok. I'm outside the US right now and have little hope of getting a new battery until July. Every day the battery decreases 1%, and eventually it'll be gone. I can wait until I get back if I can run on a dead battery. Currently at 57%.In case it's relevant, I'm in West Africa in 220V land.(As a side note, I dropped the thing when I first arrived and the screen cracked, but it hasn't lost any functionality so far, so kudos to Lenovo for that!) Thanks in advance for any help or advice. I have a Lenovo YT3 850f that crashed after attempting to upgrade to android 6.0. I brought it back to factory settings using "YT3-850F_USR_S000025_1510160911_Q1241_ROW_factory_update".The issue I have now its that when I power on the tablet and the system starts up it shuts down soon after because it does not recognize the charge in the battery. If turned on while plugged in I can run initial settings but still shuts down a few seconds later saying battery power is too low and charge showing as charging but at 0%The battery charges just fine when plugged into the cord "slow white flashing light" and I can keep it on for hours under the bootloader screen or under recovery mode without the tablet being plugged in, in fact I've never reached a point in which it turned off on its own with those two methods. I have already tried such things as holding down power button for 20-30 seconds but since not turning on at all isn't the issue all that does is turn the tablet on and off a few times. I tried to use fastboot and adb to look into it but adb does not recognize the device and what I can do with fastboot is extremely limited since I don't get enough time with the tablet being on to go into the settings and turn on developer mode. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the system to recognize that the battery is charged?

I have bought this Lenovo laptop some months ago, but I still haven't figured out a way to change the charge for my battery from 59% to 100% in Ubuntu. I know that is possible by installing the Lenovo power management utility on Windows, but unfortunately, that would require me to wipe my system, install Windows, and then reinstall my system. Through a web search, I have found that it is possible to get a full charge by resetting the CMOS, but I have not found instructions on how to do it on the Lenovo G40-80. I have tried shutting down, disconnecting the AC and the battery, and holding the power button for 1 minute, but it did not work! Another tip I have found in the Arch Linux forums, and tried without success was shutting down the laptop, removing the battery with the AC plugged in, holding the power button for 20 seconds, placing the battery again, holding more 20 seconds, removing the battery, holding more 20 seconds, powering on the laptop, and then reinserting the battery again... I'm going on a long trip tonight, and having a full charge would be extremely important to me! Hi All, It seems many people are having this issue as I scour this forum. My Lenovo y40 is less than a year old, so still on warranty. It recently (May 19th) began to have battery problems. It shows 100%, Charging, when plugged in. But, as soon as I unplug the charger the battery drains quickly or shuts off immediately. Other times, the battery will hold its charge and stay on for a few hours. It's very intermittent, it seems like the laptop has trouble reading the actual battery level. I have tried everything already recommended on this forum, reinstalled drivers, reset the battery guage through Energy Manager. What gives? The laptop is too new to have a faulty battery, and it was working perfectly up until a few days ago.Anyone else having this issue, do I really need to use the warranty already? Argh...

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue battery not charging in your Lenovo Y410 laptop.

Try to uninstall the energy management and restart the system and check for the issue. Also try to uninstall the Microsoft ACPI from the device manager and restart the system and check for the issue.

Hi,

I have a Lenovo Z50-70 running Windows 8.1. The laptop is relatively new, bought in Jan. 2015.

Some time ago, the original battery suddenly started to have a problem where it would say 45% available, plugged in, not charging. No matter what fixes I tried (after looking through a lot of articles, posts, comments, etc.), nothing made the battery start charging again. It always stays at 45%. Also the battery light/indicator on the front of the laptop is always blinking white.

So I got a new battery, put it in hoping that it would work and charge up to 100%, but the new battery is having exactly the same problem as the original old one! It will only charge up to 45%, then it says plugged in not charging. The battery light is again always blinking white.

What do I do? How can this be fixed? What's going on?

Appreciate any help. Thank you very much.

check the warranty is still active, as thats one route you could take with a relatively new laptop.

also, try uninstalling the energy management and restart the system and check for the issue. also try uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI from the device manager and restart the system and check for the issue. for more info on this action see this thread in the link:

HiI have a Lenovo Flex 3 1480 thats about 2 years old. Suddendy the battery wont charge. When the AC adapter is plugged in the icon says 21% available (plugged in, charging) but its NOT charging. My drivers are up to date. Windows 10 is up to date. I downloaded the Lenovo Vantage which tells me the battery is GOOD and that the AC adapter has limited use. Says AC adapter cannot provide enough power to operate the computer....... OK so I bought a new Lenovo brand AC charger. Same problem. I really dont think I have the ability to open the back of this computer and take out the battery then put it back in to see if that works.Anyone have any useful suggestions?

Dear all, I just purchase Lenovo V310 14-IKB with double battery. No problem with my main battery, but the problem are in my backup battery (the detachable one). I start to replace the DVD Rom with this battery and charge it, but after 80% it stop and said "80 plugged in and not charging". I want this battery charged to 100% too, same as my primary battery. I need it because I often work mobile and charge until 100% helps me to stay without charger for longer. I already searched for the solutions, read posts from forums.lenovo.com, install apps and drivers (Lenovo Utility, Lenovo Vantage, etc.) but there was no exact solution for this issue. Does anyone from this forum experience the same issue? If yes, is there any solution to make the Lenovo V310 14-IKB charge into 100%? Please help me. Thank you.

I have a Lenovo G50-45 laptop (AMD) which is around three years old. I used it yesterday evening and shut it down. Today when I turned it on the following happened:The battery was not charging.I tried charging with another Lenovo charger of the same spec but the battery was still not charging. The battery ran out of charge and the system shut downI pulled out the battery and tried all the useless charge-flushing things but nothing worked, as always. The system powers on and works as usual with the battery pulled out and connected to AC mains. The system does not work with the battery put in and connected to AC mains or not. When I press the power button With the battery in, the LED blinks orange three times.Could anyone throw some light on what the issue might be? Should I replace the battery?Thanksvinod
