Screen blackout and crash soon after sign in

Q: Screen blackout and crash soon after sign in

Hi guys, currently trying to resolve an issue with my girlfriend's PC! Nightmare!

Here's the context:

She's recently upgraded to a GTX 970 and an SSD with Windows 10 (using the free upgrade from a fresh 8.1 install) and on the first boot after the upgrade everything seemed to be working fine. She booted the next day to find that about 20-30 seconds after logging in the monitor would just blank and the only way of progressing would be to restart. Repeat ad infinitum!

She has an 8.1 installation on a separate mechanical drive which works fine (although it did actually suffer from the same issue before I clean installed the nVidia drivers, which seemed to resolve the issue).

I've tried to clean install drivers on the 10 installation, installed chipset drivers, monitor drivers (!?), all to no avail. It just crashes. This is all from safe mode, which works fine as expected. This is what made me think it was a driver issue.

Any ideas? The chipset thing was as far as I think I can take it without asking you guys for help!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Since I put my pc on this morning, I have been getting sporadic screen blackouts when viewing video. eg: watching news video which goes blank, then back on, blank back on etc. So I tried it in youtube, same problem and also in NASA tv live. Then I came in here and started asking the question and no blackout.

Presume blackout is tied in with either java or shockwave?????

It was perfect yesterday

I just upgraded my Gateway DX4300-03 computer from Windows Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium, and ever since, my monitor has been periodically switching off for 1-2 seconds as if it lost the connection, then refreshes. When the screen comes back, the mouse is centered on the screen. This issue did not happen with Vista.

I have tried updating my video drivers(to ATI's version 10.1), and installed all the windows updates, and still the same issue. I've also uninstalled the ATI drivers to force windows drivers for the card, and I get the same thing (although the off time seems to be shorter). It seems to happen no matter what the computer is doing (playing a game, browsing folders, completely idle).

Any suggestions?

The system contains an AMD Phenom X4 9750 processor, an ATI Radeon HD 4650 video card, 8GB DDR, 1TB Hard Drive. Full specs are here: http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668282.php

Also to note, I know the power supply is pretty small (300W), but again, it didn't have an issue in Vista. I was thinking about upgrading it to a 500W or bigger, but I'm not sure if it will help yet.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

A:Laptop Screen Blackout

It is most likely broken.
I had one that progressed like that and eventually would only flicker.

If its under warranty, it would be wise to call up the company.

Otherwise, to repair the screen would be way more expensive than the laptop itself. (First have it checked out by a professional to determine if its actually broken)

Malwares spoiled my previous hard disk, so I replaced it with a new one. This one now has windows 7 installed, and all drivers except the audio one I didn't care to implement from manufacturer's collection disk. Now that my games were experiencing almost random crashes, I simply chose to download intel's latest drivers. That didn't help.
By 'crashes' I intend to mean a specific type of BSOD, the display goes black while the audio may start to mingle with itself. Not only that luxury games experience such crashes, very little memory consuming games can not get rid of it as well. Though less physical rom and less graphical rom consumption implies less crashes, the frame rate is never stable.
Meanwhile, I analysed the logs and minidumps. Some, but not all crashes would result from an event 1001 bugcheck. And a new minidump is, it appears, reported only after such a bugcheck is encountered. So, in the cases when a bugcheck was not reported, I could not locate any trail of information.
Minidump reports appear to suggest that something called 'directx graphics kernel driver' is not functioning properly.

A friend of mine has an older Toshiba Satellite - I'm not sure of the model. Every now and then she'll go to turn it on and the screen will remain black, though if I look close enough I can still see the information on it. Usually she can turn it off, remove the battery, wait a few moments, put the battery back in, and it will work fine, but it's started happening more and more.

I know it isn't something with her video card because if she hooks her monitor into it, even while dark, the monitor comes on just fine.

I think the problem has to do with the...side lighting? I'm still not entirely familiar with how LCD monitors work. Anyway, I doubt there's anything I could do but tell her to take it somewhere for repairs, but I wanted to make sure first - especially if it's going to cost a bit. Is there a bulb, tube, or wire ot something that could be loose? I'm just looking for ideas.

Any help would be appreciated, even if it's just confirmation about what I think is wrong.

Recently my computer screen will suddenly go black (like there is no signal comming from the computer). I thought that maybe my graphics card was going bad, until I had music on when the screen went black and the music acted like it was a CD that was skipping on a track. Then I noticed that the entire computer was actually freezing. This is happening more and more frequently. Sometimes if I move my mouse around (as if trying to get out of "screen saver mode") the monitor will come back on and the computer will not be in freeze mode. I also started noticing that the internet expolorer is running very slowly (it often seems like it hangs up for a while when trying to find the website that I'm trying to load). I have deleted all the temporary internet history and files, but this is not fixing anything. Please Help.

Thank you for your time, Sincerely,

Hi, my first time here and posting. I have no DXDiag, but I can explain the problem and hopefully someone knows something I can do.

I was playing League of Legends and the game froze, the game play screen covers the entire screen so no way of clicking out. There was no reaction to the end of game continue button at which it froze either.

After that I turned it off by the power button and removed all power sources (charging wire and battery) and when I attempted to turn it back on the screen was black and didn't show anything and seemed to be turning on and off (I could only tell this as my phone was sub charging from the laptop and kept buzzing to notify the charge not working and then starting again).

I'm really not sure what the issue is or how to resolve this, any help is very much welcome.

Is there any way any of turning this stupid feature off and not having to worry about flicking at the wire. I predict one day there will be no way to romance this lil' wire back to life.

Ok, I was gonna play some UT04, and I was downloading some maps from the server I was joining. All of a sudden, all of these red and blue lines appeared on my screen, and it froze. I tried the ol' Ctrl + Alt + Del but to no avail. Then, the BSOD! I thought, Ok, just a random crash, it will be fine when I restart it.

No, I was wrong.

It started up fine, except the startup screen had green lines, kinda like the red and blue lines from UT04. It went on to the login screen and the lines came back, then it didnt shut down, but it just blacked out.

Hi everyone.,

I was getting the annoying "missing bootmgr" message for a while and decided to re-install Windows XP. So everything was going ok, it formatted the HD, copied files during the "setup blue screen", rebooted and continued with the installation in the "nicer looking setup screen".

During this, power went off in my house. I thought that would be just a matter of starting the install from scratch, but after the initial message of "setup is examining your hardware configuration" the screen goes black and nothing happens. I thought it would take a while but nothing, no activity on the HD or the CD drive.

What happened? What can I do to normally install Windows again?

Thanks!

A:Blank screen after blackout during Windows XP install

The power outage might have destroyed your HDD. Boot into Setup (Bios) on the Main page do you see your HDD listed? If not, then the HDD has failed. Or there may be other hardware problem.
If your HDD is listed, during the XP install, do you get to the Partition information page? If so, then Delete the existing partitions, Create a new partition, Format the partition NTFS and install Windows.

Recently my screen has twice gone black and completely blank without warning while browsing the internet on Chrome with several tabs open; also happened a few minutes ago while playing game Crysis 2. Prior to the display going dark in Crysis 2 i updated the nVidia display drivers to the latest version. Obviously, that didn't help. There's no error message on screen and CTRL-Alt-Del has no visible effect. I pressed the Reset button on the front of the PC to force a Restart. This resulted in the usual message of Windows-didn't-shut-down-properly along with the options to start in Safe Mode, etc. I waited and let Windows start normally. As on previous occasions it booted up OK and i'm now typing this post on the PC. Should mention that the black screen has happened a couple of times over the last 10 days, and i updated the display drivers hoping that would resolve the issue, but it hasn't. Also, system fans provide adequate case cooling but are set for fairly quiet running. Temperatures have never been a problem.

Hey there everyone! So I've been having some issues with my computer. Initially most of the problems were forced re-directs on IE when doing google searches, particularly when using the address bar. I've tried to use malwarebytes and spybot, which typically between the both of them can clear up any issues I have. Not this time. My system restore points also only go back until around the 16th of this month, which is after I began having issues. More recently I had an issue where the screen blacked out and I got a notification to choose a recording device, as if I were viewing a flash game(not sure if it's flash that you typically see this on, but I'm sure you can figure out what I mean. XD), and then the screen blacked out and displayed a message from the supposed FBI claiming I have some illegal unmentionables that were found on my pc and that I owe 400$ to unlock the computer and my task manager and such were disabled. I was able to get rid of this by starting a Hard shutdown, then canceling it out. My log:

Hi, I bought a T480s back in December 2018 and have noticed this problem in the title for quite a while now. I'm running the following: Processor: i7-8650UNo MX150Graphics: Intel UHD 620Screen: WQHDMultiple times throughout the day my screen will flicker or momentarily black out sections (typically the bottom portion) of it. It doesn't happen as often when fewer applications are open, but it still occurs even then. It doesn't appear to be a hardware issue, given that I've tried moving the laptop back and forth, shook it gently etc. to try to reproduce the strange behavior.I tried updating the Intel drivers only for the problem to worsen -- updating the driver to the November version (25.x something) caused the computer to additionally black out the screen entirely at times, which could only be resolved by putting the laptop to sleep and waking it up again! I've decided to install version 24.20.100.6223 of the Intel 620 UHD driver, and I'm hoping it works without a hitch, but has anyone else had and resolved this sort of issue before? Or if some Lenovo staff are around, is there a solution? I'd really like to send it back for a replacement but my schedule won't allow me and I'd be out of a laptop for work.

My computer is brand new, about two months old, and I haven't used it too much yet. Today, while signing in to my Windows account, the computer crashed. It was rather odd too.

I typed in my password and the "loading circle" appeared. The loading circle then froze in place followed by the monitor going blank and then saying it wasn't getting any signal. The computer was still running and the monitor connections were fine, but the screen was still blank. I couldn't even shut the computer off by holding down the power button. I must have held it down for at least 15 seconds, way longer than usual to force a shutdown. The computer reset button was unresponsive as well. I tried both buttons multiple times but they did nothing. I had to resort to manually shutting off the power supply unit (which I really did not want to do).

A:Crash During User Sign In (Windows 8)

The problem may be worse than I thought.

It just happened to me again. This time, I had booted up the computer and it was just sitting at the user log in screen and then the screen went black, but the machine stayed on. I tested the monitor by removing the connection from the GPU and plugging it in to the connection that connects to the motherboard. Nothing. Power button ceases to work and I have to shut the computer off by shutting down the power supply. (And I have tested this, I can shut the computer down by holding down the power button, when the computer actually boots correctly).

My problem is very similar to this persons here although I am not overclocking. Also, once my computer gets past the log on screen it seems to be fine.

I'm starting to think this is a hardware issue or maybe I am drawing too much power on the PSU (although I should only be using about 50% at most of the max 520W  rating).

I'm getting very worried.

I have windows 7, and Norton, I did not click on anything, but logged off immediately , and ran Norton eraser, with no virus found. However I am still worried that in 40 days my computer will crash. I do not know if the intrusion was blocked for sure. Everything is working now perfectly, and there has been no signs of anything in control of windows 7 of my computer. But now am I still in danger of this as maybe a hacker, that could crash my computer in the future? Or not?

About a week ago, seemingly at random, I started getting lag spikes, where my audio would distort and mouse movement would be slowed, and basically everything would slow down for a few seconds. This has persisted over the last week, not always starting as soon as the PC would be turned on (I was doing troubleshooting of my own last night, which required the PC to be restarted several times, and I could recreate the lag from startup, whereas today it was only hours into use that it began). It seems to be when something is loading, mainly, but can also be while idle. I've been using DPC latency checker to monitor it (DPC claims it's a driver issue, but I've attempted to pinpoint it by disabling one by one with little results).

This eventually culminated in a BSOD, but not like I was used to. It was as if my computer was shutting down. My browser and all my programs shut themselves down, I got a couple of errors about my program's services being stopped while in use, which I clicked through, and only once nothing but my wallpaper was onscreen (no toolbar or anything) did the BSOD pop up. I was obviously worried, but relieved I'd have a crash dump to investigate. At the time I had it set to a kernel memory dump, but nothing has been generated. I have now switched to a Small Memory dump, but am unable to recreate the BSOD. I'm able to recreate the lag once it has started by itself, but before it starts I'm unable to recreate it.

I hope I've provided enough information/poste... Read more

My laptop was working fine the other day... Came back to it the next morning and the screen wouldn't come on and it kept resetting every 30 seconds or so. Once I finally got it to boot and get to sign in page the screen was all scrambled. But, everything else worked I could log in but couldn't do anything...

Anyone got a solution?

I've been using Windows 10 for just over one year. For some reason the Lock Screen/Sign-in screen shows three users. All three are me in three iterations. I find also that when trying to save some excel and word documents I receive messages saying that i am not allowed to save to this folder or that folder. I am able to save to the desk top and then drag and drop the document into the folder that I need to place it in. I know that this must have something to do with "permissions". Not sure how to fix that. One of the accounts that shows up is the initial account that I created back when hotmail.com was around. Any ideas/advice on these issues? When i updated to Windows 10, pretty certain that i followed all of the instructions, although that has been over 1 year now. Thank you in advance...cheers and beers to all!

Hello all, this is my first time posting. I receive a BSOD upon startup, once I reach windows login screen. After a couple of seconds, input will lock up. Usually, this is followed after a few moments by a BSOD, though occasionally, input is reallowed, and computer functions normally. This continues until windows tries to install updates. When signing off to reboot, configurations reach 30%, and computer attempts reboot. At this time, before reaching the sign on screen, I get what I can best describe as a bunch of staggered blue and light blue lines across my entire monitor, which requires me to hard boot my computer. To restore functionality, I have to go into safe mode, where I'm informed 'failure configuring windows updates' and my computer automatically reverts the updates. Afterwards, I can boot normally, and I'm back up to the login (which occasionally allows me to proceed.)
I've updated several drivers, uninstalled recently installed programs, and have backed up all files I care to keep. I've tried to do a bit of research, but I'm not getting very far, and this has been going on for several days. My most recent BSOD info is posted below... please help before my computer bites the dust for good!

When I shut down my PC at night I leave my tower powered up but switch off my Monitor and my 5.1 speaker system. When I switch my monitor on again the next day it has previously always shown the Windows account sign in page until the last two days when I get a black screen on powering up my monitor. Yesterday I had the mouse pointer showing and I could move it about but today I didn't even have that. Both days I had to crash reboot my PC using the lower button on the tower and my PC worked normally from then until I switched it off again at bedtime last night, when as I said I got a total black screen this morning.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this and how to solve it?.

Hello,

This morning (11.26.14, 8:50ish) I had nothing running more than usual (chrome, onenote, word) on my desktop. I was in my other room turning on my laptop but it would not find my wireless network. I went to my desktop and found that the monitor turned itself off (that's normal) but moving the mouse and pressing the spacebar would not wake the monitor up. The desktop power light was on and the monitor light was on. I then looked at the DSL modem and saw the power light was red. So I unplug it and waited 20 seconds; plugged it back in and the desktop rebooted.

Could a power fault on the modem affect the desktop like that?

I checked the event log viewer and the closest I can find is this:

I know little to nothing about computers. For reasons beyond my knowledge the MSN sign in screen pops up without being prompted to. This is annoying in and of itself, but it is very frustrating when it does so in the middle of a powerpoint presentation. I am running an HP laptop with windows ME. Any suggestions.

You can check you startup folder to see if it's in there. START, PROGRAMS, STARTUP. You can delete the shortcut if you find one.
Let me know if this helps.

Good afternoon,
I have read through the previous posts on this subject, but didn't find
a resolution to the challenge facing me.

I have run the NETPLWIZ to no avail, the sign in screen opens with an
error message telling me that the username or password is invalid, even
though I have done nothing more than switch on.

When I click the OK button, a password window opens under the wrong
username, one that just appeared yesterday, not put in by me, Mikem_000
is the one, I select the proper one from the two choices at the bottom left
of the screen and sign normally and all is fine.

I have tried to remove the Mikem3_000, but this seems to be the default
user and cannot be removed, this is not a serious problem till my wife
wants to use the PC and I am not at home, then it is very big and all my
fault.

I have removed all users except the one that works and the one that cannot
be removed.

I have fitted a new HDD and am installing all programmes etc.

Can anybody tell me how to remove the immovable please.

Thank you.

Mike.

Hello Mike, and welcome to Ten Forums.

It sounds like you may have entered your password incorrectly in netplwiz while setting Windows to automatically sign in to your account at startup.

If so, you can go through netplwiz to set this up again with the correct password to fix this.

How do I get the ending screen to be the same as the lock screen?

I love the piano keyboard stock lock screen but can't stand the Seattle Space needle screen.

Thanks.

A:Sign out screen different from lock screen?

I logged into the hidden Administrator account and sure enough, the lock screen was the Seattle Space needle screen. I changed it there thinking that would fix the issue but no such luck. The issue, I am assuming has to do with the administrator account.
