Laptop won't turn on after BIOS update

Q: Laptop won't turn on after BIOS update

A few days ago, my 9470m Ultrabook automatically updated its BIOS. This was fine, as it has updated its BIOS before in the past. I went to do some things while it updated, and when I came back, the laptop had turned off. The charge light (the lightning bolt light on the edge of the laptop) was blinking white and amber and did not turn on when I pressed the power button. When I took off the battery, the light stopped blinking, and when I put the battery back in, the light began to blink again, but the laptop still would not turn back on when I pressed the power button. I've tried taking off the battery and plugging in the AC only, but still the light would just blink and the laptop would not turn on when I pressed the power button. I do not know what is wrong. The laptop had been working flawlessly until the BIOS update. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to any support. -Daniel

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, At first, please try a Hard Reset as follows. Performing a hard resetDisconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and SD media cards.Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery and then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds to drain all residual power and restore default startup settings.Reconnect the AC power adapter (but do not insert the battery), press the Power button, look for glowing Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) near the caps lock and num lock keys, and listen for sounds of a fan or other moving parts turning. If the computer starts normally after performing a hard reset, you are done troubleshooting. When the Notebook restarts keep tapping the f10 key to enter the bios menu. Press f5 to load the defaults (this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. I am waiting to hear back from you. !------------------- Please click the KUDOS star on the left to say 'Thanks'. Please mark 'Accept as Solution' if it answers/solves your problem. Thank you-----------------------------------------------------------------!I am an HP Employee.

I got a notice on my laptop saying there was a critical update, so I clicked ok go ahead with it. Now that this problem has occurred and I've been hunting for a solution I see that people generally warn against doing BIOS updates. Unfortunately I didn't know about that and was just naively letting the laptop go ahead with whatever updates it wanted. Too late now. My laptop shut itself down like it was going to restart, when I looked back over ten minutes later it was still sitting with a black screen and LED light on. Unresponsive to anything. It's been two hours now.  To make matter worse, I'm trying to contact Lenovo customer support and keep getting a "document not found" page error when I try to get to the contact information on Lenovo's website. This forum is apparently the only thing I can access. So.. any advice? I'm in a complete panic here as I heavily depend on that laptop for a number of things and having it not work puts me in a really bad situation.

Hi Brrlrcr97, and welcome to TSG.

Exactly what do you mean by "won't turn on"? Do you press the power button, it makes some sounds, and then completely shuts off?

Are we safe to assume it is an H-P/Compaq brand computer? If so, please give us the full model number of it (not just the model series).

My Lenovo x270 was having some start up issues which eventually prompted me to reset the CMOS battery and bios (as shown here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4XA9eFV0ao ). That worked, and I was able to start up my laptop as normal, go into bios, set the time, etc. But when I had to restart my laptop after installing a new bios update, the laptop crashed. I tried doing a CMOS battery/bios reset, but that hasn't helped. The power is fine: power button goes green, keyboard lights up. But the screen stays black, and the laptop plays a weird tune (not bios beeps?), as in this video I recorded (at the end): https://youtu.be/1S2g7mpIx6U  I tried the hard power reset button on the bottom of my laptop too, but that didn't help. I also tried connecting a monitor via HDMI and starting up the laptop then, but the same thing happens: black screen, weird been song.If I press the fn key, it plays a beep song too... Any ideas what's wrong?

I literally despise Lenovo BIOS updates, and avoid them like the plague unless absolutely required. There is a Android App called Lenovo PC Diagnostics (available in the Google Play Store) that can listen to that code, tell you what the error code is, and the solution. You should be able to press and hold the Fn key and get the code to repeat while the Lenovo PC Diagnostics App is set to Acquire.    I tried it using the tone in your video, and it returned the code: 0285    (TCG- compliant functionality-releated error (might be the TPM initialization failure)  but unfortunately the "Action" it suggests is "Replace the system board (motherboard) (service provider only)    You may want to run the diagnostic yourself to confirm just to be sure. I presume that you cannot get into the bios or boot by any means to attempt to re-flash the BIOS, so you may need to contact support.  Best of luck,

I've set Win 10 Power Options so that when I close my laptop lid or press Power button slightly, it would put the laptop to sleep rather than turn off. Last Friday I ran the update software because multiple reminders, part of that updated the BIOS, it took a while that's why I remembered. Now it seems no matter whether I close my laptop lid or press the Power Button slightly it would power off the laptop.
I searched this forum, just last month BIOS 1.2.16 corrected the power button/lid closing issue causing laptop to turn off instead of sleeping despite what those settings were set to do in Win 10 Power Options. Now it seems 1.2.18 cause this issue to come back again.

Any solution? Thanks

Hi, Try the following. First of all, use another PC to create a bootable Windows 10 DVD or USB Flash Drive via the following link.  Under the section 'Need to create a USB, DVD or ISO', download the Media Creation Tool. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Once you have this, run the tool, select 'Create installation media for another PC', then select the language, edition of Windows 10, and 64bit. Follow the rest of the prompts to create this and then click Finish when completed. Insert the Windows 10 Installation Media and Shutdown the notebook by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Boot Options Menu ( f9 ). Use the arrow keys to highlight the CDROM or USB option, depending on which type of media you created, then hit enter - if prompted to 'Press any key to continue....' - do so. Boot to the Advanced Start-up Options Menu - see Option 5 on the link below for details on accessing this. http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanced-startup-options-boot-windows-10-a.html#option5 Then try running Windows System Restore to return the notebook to a point in time before the update was applied - See Option 1 on the link below for details on this procedure. http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4588-system-restore-windows-10-a.html Regards, DP-K

Hi Mmusolino95, Well to resolve your issue, you need to do general troubleshooting. For this, you require bootable disk or safe mode to boot your laptop. There may be chances that it will work for you. If you successfully boot into safe mode, then try to uninstall your previous update and then reboot it to check if this can work for you.

Does anybody here have any idea how to go about flash updating the BIOS on a HP Laptop running Windows 10? Annoyingly HP do not provide support for Win 10 OS, only Win 7. HP support aren't particularly helpful and I'm also getting conflicting information from them. I downloaded a link for the update which they gave me, but without any assurances that it would work because it's meant for Win 7, I'm therefore fearful of bricking the laptop if its not compatible. If someone can shed some light on this I would be grateful, thanks

A:HP Laptop/Win 10 BIOS update

The BIOS itself is not for any particular OS, its just the installer that may have an issue, the BIOS itself is compatible. And in most cases the installer will run without issue on other OS's too, if it wont it will tell you almost right away.

FYI, there's always a risk with a BIOS update so unless it addresses something that is affecting you you do not need to update it. No one can give you a assurance something wont go wrong with a BIOS update, it happens although rarely these days.

To talk about possible workarounds, it would be very useful to know what notebook model you have and what system is preinstalled.

Furthermore it would be interesting to know if you already tried to recover the notebook back to factory settings.
If you did not do that in the past, I would recommend you to perform such recovery and to sett the notebook back to factory settings?

Hello, I was just performing an BIOS update as recommended by the HP assistant.  It went ahead and started, and said it completed successfully.  It then prompted for a reboot, which I did. During the reboot, the system has frozen with the message (in red) "Upon restarting, the screen may be blank for a few minutes and various LED lights may flash.  Please do not attempt to interrupt or power down during this time." It then has a number 15 (which looks like it might be a countdown timer), and a Continue Startup button which is grayed out.  The mouse is frozen and the sceen is doing nothing else. During the bios update, I had the laptop plugged into a docking station that had a keyboard, mouse, network cable, and external hard drive attached.  When it froze,  I unplugged this. I don't know what to do at this point.  Is it safe to power down and see what happens?   Any advice?

A:BIOS update for my acer 5750z laptop

just don't flash bios from windows rule 1 !!format usb as ms dos bootable fat 32 , copy files from dos folder and boot from usb and flash bios, worst case scenario you need desolder eeprom and reprogram it with programmator.
