I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I saw your post right after you made it but I did not post a reply because:
1) Real life got in the way
2) I'm not sure that I understand your issue.
I'm not picking at your English, but this is important:

Your post mentioned, "another file is opens with that".

I'm guessing that you meant:
...another file is opened with that
...another file opens with that

Either way, the word open is really important to the description of your problem.

Let's just talk about Word for now.

When you open a Word, one or more temporary files may be created. This is normal and desired; but those temp file(s) should not automatically open in Word.

Please try this:
Close all copies of Word.
Open Windows (file) Explorer.
Double click on an existing Word document.

How many windows do you have open for the Word program?
(Hopefully, just one.)

How many files do you have open in the Word program?
(Hopefully, just one.)

Are you seeing this file that bothers when you look at Word or when you look at Windows (file) Explorer?

Please show us what you see and where you see it.
Here is a link with instructions about posting screenshots to this forum:
Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

Your post mentioned, "(with a infinity sign in the front with the same extension )"
The temporary file(s) that Word might create should start with a Tilde character and then the dollar sign (~$), not the symbol for infinity. And Notepad should not create these temporary files... so I might not understand your problem at all.

Below is a video that I made for another thread. The point of the video was to show that these temporary files can be left behind if Word exits abnormally. The video does not happen to show file extensions... but hopefully it will still help us communicate:

(You might want to watch it in the full screen mode and at 720p resolution.)

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

I am having a goofy problem with .doc and .xls files. If I attempt to open them from either Windows Explorer or My computer, I get the "This file is already open" error but then you can then change the file and save it.
However, I can then execute the application and open the file from within the app, it works fine and doesn't give the error.
Any help would be appreciated. I have found traces of this error on the internet but have not found any satisfactory solutions to it. Thanks

I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
The funny thing is that windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago ... can I somehow set this back to the normal winxp picture and fax displaying thing?

I am using Windows 7 with 2007 Outlook. When I try to open a pdf attached file it opens up Windows Media Centre and not the file. I have Adobe 9 installed. Any ideas how I can rectify this.

A:PDF Attached file in Outlook Opens Window Media Centre and not the file.

Hi harrygas, welcome to the forum. Adobe Acrobat Reader will open .pdf files. Is that the Adobe 9 you are referring to?

The current Reader version is Adobe Reader X (10.1.2) and can be downloaded and installed over the top of the old version.

There are some excellent .pdf readers available in freeware online that are more flexible and many people prefer them, myself included. After uninstalling the Adobe Reader, I downloaded \ installed Nitro PDF Reader.

I tried searching for this but didn't find anything. Apologies if I get my Windows terminology incorrect, I'm using the Japanese version of XP Pro (but am more familiar with English) so system text is in Japanese so I have to translate it by memory from when I last used English Windows or literally translate the Japanese term.

After having to do a repair install, all my file associations were reset. But when I right-click on an affected file and select "Program Opens With" (or go into its Properties then click on "change" under File Associations) and manually search for the program, I can select the program in the Open dialog box but once it's selected and I hit OK, it's not in the list of programs that Windows will allow me to choose for the File Association.

I also tried going into the options of two different programs (IrfanView, Media Player Classic) so I could just have the program change the file associations, but this didn't work either.

Any ideas? Reinstalling the relevant programs might work, but not all programs give you the option of changing their file associations when you install them...

VLC is a video program so I want to associate video files to this bat file. This would mean that when i clicked on a video file in Windows Explorer, the bat file would execute and VLC would open the file I double clicked. At the moment the only thing that happens in this setup is that the bat file executes like normal but no video is played.

Is this possible, and if so how can I accomplish it?

Hi all,

Recently, I've had about 3 specific problems with Windows 10. I'll post them seperately.

The first 'problem' is that every time I boot my Pc, a pane opens up asking what app do I want to use to open this file. There is no file to be opened that I know of. A click on a blank part of the screen closes the pane.

Does anypone know what is happening and how to cure the occurrence please?

Many thanks.

One of my co-workers has been having this odd problem and I'm not sure what to make of it.

On occasion, she goes to open an INDD (Adobe InDesign) file which is stored on our Windows 2003 server, and it opens as "read-only." She opens the file to make changes and can't because InDesign won't let her save any changes to the file.

There's no apparent reason for this - she has full access to the file, the file's read-only bit has not been set, and there's plenty of space on the server.

What she usually does to get around it is to "Save As..." over the file she's just opened. That normally works. On occasion this doesn't work and she has to "Save As..." to her desktop, then "Save As..." back over the original. It's a pain for her at the very least.

She has this problem at least a few times during the week.

What's odd is that I've checked the "open files" list on that Windows 2003 server when she gets the error. Her workstation suddenly opens a whole handful of zip files located on the same Windows 2003 server (some of our digital artwork comes in zip packages). They are opened in read mode only (READ, not READ-WRITE).

When she does her "save as..." and gets past the error, the read locks/handles on the zip files are closed also. The ZIP thing sounded suspicious to me and I scanned her computer (as well as the ZIPs) for viruses. Nothing came up. I have since eve... Read more

A:INDD file opens read-only, ZIP files suddenly open in BG

I've encountered this same problem. Is she using a Mac? If so, I've noticed that OS X wants to create a little image preview when you select a file in the Finder. Some files take longer than others to render the preview. If she opens the file before the Finder is finished rendering, it will open as Read-Only. I believe this is due to the fact that the Finder is still using the file when CS tries to open it. Simple fix: Wait until the Finder finishes creating the preview, then open the file.

I have a group of files I created in Microsoft Works 3.0 ( word processing and spreadsheets.) I have the original files on Floppy Disc, Scan Disc, and on my Hard Drive. I have tried coverters, and the best results I have received are partial, or full text with symbols. Nothing with the original documents creation form and font style. I have been told that the only true way to see these files in their original form is to run the files through Works 3.0 with Windows 3.0 with MS DOS. ( before Windows had its own operating system. )
Is anyone out here running Microsoft Works 3.0, with Windows 3.0, on top of a MS DOS operating system. These files should open in their original form, and then are able to be save in DOC. format. All helps are Welcome!

A:Winrar extracts files i choose to open & opens random file

Hello Carox, welcome to the forums.

It may be due to an older zip format that the archive was created with or some bugs that may exist related to Winrar and zip.
Maybe the program's settings that cover archiving are changed from defaults. If you uninstall, the program's settings are kept and a new reinstall will use them again.

Known normal behavior:
If you open an archive within another archive (zip in zip for instance) then the inner archive will be extracted to temp first and then opened.

Try other programs as well: Winrar 5.00 beta and 7-Zip 9.20 to see how the archive gets opened.

So I was working on a document for work. The document is on Excel and has data from every month this year.

I was opening the file and the laptop then froze. I gave it a good 20 minutes but nothing, so had no choice but to hard reset (not even task manager was opening)

After turning it back on and opening the file, I was horrified to see that the data from April onwards was missing. 4 months of work gone. Obviously the file was smaller at 5mb than the 7mb it was when I was working on it. But then I found in the file location an Adobe TMP file. It had a random name (series of numbers) but was the same file size and date late modified was the time of the crash.

This must be my data. It's now a word file, but I can't open it with Excel. Is there anything I can do to convert the TMP file to the Excel document and recover my data?

have also tried looking manually in locations where there was possibility of seeing the auto recover files. user has already tried recover unsaved document option. thee is no shadow copy enabled on the machine, hence no chance of reverting to previous versions of documents.

any advice i shighly appreciated.

Wow, that looks familiar...what is that! I'm thinking old Wordperfect backup file. Try changing the extension to wpd and opening it directly from Word--do not try double-clicking the file from explorer or the desktop, it won't work.

Have you tried (Word again) File-Open and changing the file of type to "Recover text from any file"? If you get something you can read out of it but want to maintain the original file anyway, then save it to a new name.

Whoa! Check it out. Bookmark this site for your future use:

It says just what I suspected, some kind of Wordperfect backup file. You may want to try to find someone with WP if it's really important. Or, your friendly neighborhood Kinko's will have it.

Best of luck to you.

Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit
Intel i5 CPU @2.67 GHz

This problem just started recently or I only noticed it in the past week or so. When I'm in any application that launches the File Open dialog, including any browser's "Select File/Browse" button to choose a local file, when I select a file (even a small 1K file) from the dialog and the dialog closes, there is a 5 - 10 second delay before the app responds and either opens the file or in the case of a browser, displays the file name. In those 5-10 seconds, the app is non-responsive. In a browser, other fields on the form cannot be clicked or selected for the 5-10 second period -- then the selected filename appears on the form.

This happens in all 4 browsers I tried: Chrome 32, IE 11, Firefox 26, and Safari.

I also booted Windows in safe mode and the problem still occurred.

I also ran KingSoft Office Writer and selected File->Open and the same issue occurs after selecting the file -- there is a noticeable delay that wasn't previously there.

In a code editor (PSPad), opening a file does the same thing as well (hangs for several seconds after selecting the file).

Randomly during testing, (but probably < ~5% of the time) it doesn't delay and works properly.

I ran System File Checker and MS Security Essentials, but both turned up a clean machine.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this lately?

Hello world. I have an important problem. I can't open, use or even preview files that the name of those files are colored in green. (like this)First, I would serve a chronology:- Before I reformatted my computer to windows Vista Starter SP1, I am using Windows XP Pro SP3.- Back when my Operating System is Windows XP Pro SP3, my hard drive is partitioned into two (C:/ and D:/).- I put some files (pictures, documents, apps) on one of the drives (D:/).- I tweaked the folder of the files' properties(security tab) and applied some changes in its security/sharing etc. It made a process like "applying the setting" which after that, - The name of the files and folders/subfolders turned into green!(like this)- I did this because there are multiple users on my computer(cousins) and I don't want them to mess up with my files.- I didn't see anything wrong in doing that I supposed, so I just left those files to stay that way (like this) ---- this part is the problem part ----- I finally decided to upgrade to Windows Vista Starter SP1 operating system. I installed it in the C:/ partition of my hard drive.- The files in the other partition (D:/) stayed there untouched.- I tried to insert a picture in a document, that "picture" would be a file that I am talking about a while ago, the file in drive (D:/) which its name is like this- Unfortunately, it said something like: "WORD CAN'T OPEN FILE: FILE PERMISSIONS NOT ALLOWED"- I was astonished! However if I create a shortcut to one of these applications and place the shortcut on the desktop ( on C: ), then running the shortcut causes an open file security warning (see attachment). The warning dialog claims it can't determine who created the file, because it comes from "a location outside your local network". Which is really strange because it is a locally installed hard drive.

The only explanation I have is I've used E: with a previous windows 7 installation on the same hardware, then I reformatted & reinstalled my Windows 7 partition, but kept E: untouched.

Couple of things I've tried are:
1) there is no "Unblock" button on the shortcut's properties dialog
2) Group policy editor changed to not preserve zone information
3) I couldn't find an exact match for this particular open file security warning when searching here and other forums

Similar warning under Win 8, for *.lnk (shortcuts), even though they are under Favorites.

When i attempt to open a Microsoft Power Point file (.PPT), i receive the following error message:"Sorry, the file cannot be opened because part of the file is missing."
How to stop this error?

A:PPT: "Part of File is Missing" Error Attempting to Open File

It means the file is damaged or corrupt. Is it saved on a USB drive, or on the computer hard drive? if it's on a USB, then the file wasn't properly closed before the USB was removed. If it's saved to the hard drive, then the file is damaged.
You can try opening PowerPoint, then clicking on the file you want to open and dragging and dropping it into PowerPoint.

I have a WD 120gb pocket harddrive that I ran the defragging program through. I found it shut down midway through defragging process. Now when IO try to open it, aUTORUN.N fiel appears. I have tried disk manager, the trouble shooter,to no avail. There is stuff on the trouble shooter that I don't understand,so the answer may be there.

I ran a crapcleaner brand file cleaner thru it the day before. Did I remove something with the cleaner that I needed to open this file?

Thanks for any input, for I have original content on that disk I really don't want to lose. Chip

I have a computer that is a drone specifically for an outside LED sign. This computer is designed to never shut off and doesn't have any other program on it besides Operating System and the sign software. I need to create a batch file that I can place in the "start-up" folder that will open the program (LEDStudio10) and open the file that I want to play. I have already tried multiple attempts and I was hoping someone out there in sevenforums world would be able to point me in the right direction.

A:batch file open file for program in the startup folder

Task Scheduler. Create a new/basic task. You can invoke your batch script there. This can occur after boot completes, after user logon, etc. You can set it to run daily weekly hourly, etc. You can even have it delay X (preseleted time amounts) minutes/hours after boot/logon if you want.

I want a batch to select and open a random link file in a folder i have. All the links are music videos I like to listen to, and I kind of want to just have an option for 'surprise me!'.
I can change the file names if I have to, and I have a basic batch file ability. I know the simple commands, but nothing of the variables, signs-involving commands (&%!?), etc.

Also, I want to learn a whole lot more about programming/java/batch file, so it'd be awesome if any code could be explained. Thank you, in advance

There's a free Windows scripting language called Autoit3 that would do this task easily using these functons:

AutoIt - AutoItScript
It has a Basic like syntax and is easy to learn.

Another popular scripting for Windows is AutoHotkey
AutoHotkey: macro and automation Windows scripting language

The syntax can be confusing but it has object support and is more powerful.

Of course there are tons of others for Windows:

Here's a list. The details for each tell which OS are supported:

I have this annoying problem in MS Word (2003):

When I have Word open and I select File | Open, it brings me the file view window with large icons. EVERY TIME I move through this menu, Word hangs and I have to reboot the computer to go any further.

But when I use the Windows Explorer or My Documents folder to open Word files, I don't get this problem...this ONLY happens from within Word.

Also, this problem does not occur in my other MS Office programs.

But many times out of necessity I forget to use the Explorer/MyDocuments workaround and end up freezing the computer. What shall I do?

When I used to enter a file name in windows 2007 open I would get a list of all files by that name and be able to select the one I wanted. Now I no longer get that list. I don?t know how to be more specific! If you never saw this you would probably not know that this exists!

could possibly be to do with file extensions ie .doc/docx, may have changed file save type etc, just a thought
