Windows Vista 64 installation problems and Live Updates

Q: Windows Vista 64 installation problems and Live Updates

Recently I had to re-install Vista on my machine. To my surprise even after installing 3 times update problems majorly 8024200D were there. So, I searched here n there on net including this forum but of no process worked. Hence, I decided to go for another installation. Here I will be discussing what I have observed:-

1) Installation : Something changed from Microsoft hence please install Vista as fresh and do not install any driver and/or application except LAN Drivers otherwise, you will face too many error messages during updates. Even after installing LAN driver you might get error# 80070103 but you may ignore this as this is only due to old drivers error.

2) Update : Keep updating your windows till it says no further update available. Please do not use internet except updating your windows otherwise your PC might get infected.

Surprisingly, Original Windows Vista DVD (without Sp1 or SP2) is of around 4GB and updates are of around 2GB and it will take minimum half a day to update your system 100% with good internet speed (minimum 2MBPS).

SP1 is of around 750MB and SP2 is of around 350MB and rest updates are of around 1GB+.

If you have to re-install your OS once or twice a year then you should make image of your system otherwise, updates gonna increase in future and you will be spending hell of the time in updations.

Hope this will help few members around Globe. Also, I would like to request Microsoft that they must provide single link updates so that we can download and we can keep them in a DVD for future use. This will save hell of the time and efforts.

EDIT: Fully updated windows installation size is of around 65GB so, keep proper space better keep minimum 100GB for smooth working.

Preferred Solution: Windows Vista 64 installation problems and Live Updates

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello and welcome to the vista forums.

I am going to assume that you have the full version of winds. Since you have done 3 installs I would suggest doing one more but like this.
Clean Install with a Full Version of Vista

I would do a full scan with your AV...
Download and run a full scan from malwarebytes free version...

I would aslo do a sfc scan and here's how...
System Files - SFC Command
If the sfc comes back with problems then run the sfc 3 times, the sfc scan can fix many problems on your computer...

You might also want to do a CHKDSK on your system and her's how to do this one.
Check Disk - chkdsk

For some reasons, i could not install Windows live messengers 9.0. It says:

Messenger couldnt be installed because we had trouble installing this requirement.

Please refer to help and support for more information
Please close all other open programs, and then try again. It looks like another program is preventing the installer from working. hr:0x80070643

I am using Vista on a Dell laptop. I did not open any program when i install it and i tried about 5 different installation file.

Many thanks for any help.

A:Problems with Windows live messenger 9.0 installation

You might have some left over installation file information in your registry. Try running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and remove any old instances of Messenger and Visual Studios you find in the output list. Download the cleanup file and save. Then run as Administrator.

Downloaded Messenger 2011 onto my new computer recently; however, when I went to open it, it couldn't find the files it needed. Went searching for the program everywhere, nowhere to be found, not even on the Programs List. So, I decided, best thing to do would be to re-download it, but when the new installer opened, it said that the program was already installed, despite its apparent absence from the computer.
There is a similar problem with Adobe Flash - tried to re-download it, but it continues to believe it's on my system. Hopefully I explained the problem well :/

Any and all help appreciated.

WLM Lite is not an official Microsoft release. It is edited and patched by some 3rd party and contains a trojan as notified by ESET Nod32 Antivirus. You should not use it.

Have tried multiple installations of iso 64bit everything goes fine till the option to switch log on to microsoft live account... that does not work and the option of doing this through control panel also does not work. Also microsoft updates does not work and activation does not work. However the browser is fine and allows me to browse normally except for example when i log onto skydrive to view pictures it gives me a certificate error and will not display pictures. I think for what ever reason this is some kind of proxy error but since i am using a standard internet connection i am not sure why? Any Ideas

Hi everyone!

I really hope someone out there can help me out with this, because itís driving me insane! I have searched and searched through endless forums and websites trying to find a solution, but I canít seem to find one. I posted this in the Web/Email section last week, but no one replied, so maybe I'll have more luck in here.

Here's the deal.... Iíve got a brand new computer, running Vista Home Premium, and from the moment I got it I have been having problems with Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Live Messenger.

I can surf the net and chat on WLM at the same time for hours on end, but at random, I start to get ďInternet Explorer cannot display this pageĒ and WLM disconnects. Itís not always the same websites that causes it, and it doesnít happen every time, like I said itís just really random.

For example, earlier it happened with TSG.... the main Forums page opened fine, but when I clicked on a forum name, I just got "IE cannot display the page", and WLM disconnected. It even happened when I went to the Microsoft website!

I donít think itís an actual connection problem because when it happens, AIM and other stuff, like Outlook, Limewire etc. stay connected and my little wireless icon in the taskbar says I am connected as normal. It just seems that whatever is wrong just affects IE and WLM. However, the IE problem still occurs even when WLM isnít running, so I guess it canít be caused by a conflict of the two programs. Ohhhh I just do... Read more

A:IE7 & Windows Live Messenger Problems with Vista

I installed Firefox and the exact same thing happens. I can access the internet no problem, and can access websites. Then, all of a sudden, for no reason I get the following:-

"The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading"

And Windows Live Messenger disconnects.

Soooo.... now I'm thinking it's something to do with my connection settings?

It still doesn't explain why WLM gets booted off and AIM and other stuff stay connected, but it might be a good starting point....

Anyone got any ideas?

(Note to mods: Sorry guys, this is probably in the wrong forum now isn't it. Feel free to move it )

I have just purchased an ACER computer and am running Vista. Previously I ran Windows Live Messenger on XP without any problems for a couple of years. However, I fired up my new computer about a week ago and I am being driven nuts trying to get Messenger to work. It is the latest version of Messenger - when I attempt to sign-in, the start-up screen for Messenger just "hangs there". The two small men are spinning in circles, my username and password are correct and my security setting APPEAR to be OK. Today I attempted a sign-in and after returning to my computer some 4 hours later, the two men were spinning. There is not even an error message to give me some clues.

Please help.

The download agent seems to work fine installing the Live suite of programs on my Vista-64 system. I can use Messenger without any problems, and can get to my hotmail account through Internet Explorer just fine.

However when I go to use the Live Mail application a box comes up that say Windows is "configuring my system" then disappears with nothing else happening. The application never actually loads. I test the Windows Live mail on my laptop with XP and it works great. Any ideas what the hangup is on Vista 64.

I have 4GB of RAM, Pentium Quad Extreme processor, 320GB HD system.

A:Problems Using Windows Live Mail on Vista 64

Hi Kristian,

Have you tried restarting the computer to make sure the installation finished it's process. Sometimes when you install a suite of programs like this, it may require multiple restarts to finish.

If that does not work, then you might try uninstalling Windows Live Mail and then reinstall it again by itself.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop, and my hard drive got corrupted. I have purchased a new hard drive, installed it, and am now having issues installing Windows Vista Business. I am forced to boot up from the installation disk (as there is no OS currently installed). I select the "Custom - Advanced" option for installation. Then where it asks "Where Do You Want To Install Windows?" I get an error message "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation." I've found guides that say to partition the drive, but when I do that I get error " This computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu." But when I access the BIOS, I cant see where to enable the controller. I've also tried to load the mother board driver that I downloaded from Sony, but the computer does not recognize the file. HELP!!!!!!!!!

A:Windows Vista Installation Problems

by coincidence I just re-installed Vista and I remember there being on one of the installation pages a troubleshooting link.

Failing that try each option available from the installation disc.

Alternatively see if you can get an update for your bios.

I Try to update Windows Vista SP1 towards Windows Vista SP2 (KB948465).
The installation ends with error 0x80004005. I also tried already a "Clean install", same error happens.
The following article explains the reason: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971204
Cause: When you install Vista SP2, the Vista SP2 installer must update the system boot files. If third-party disk management tools are used to "clone" disks or partitions, the SP2 installer will be unable to uniquely identify the correct system boot files.
Resolution: To work around this issue, turn off the computer and physically unplug all drives that are not required for starting Windows. Power up the computer and restart the service pack installation.
If the workaround is not successful, the alternative is to perform a clean-install.

I run a seperate system partition and start partition (see in the following article)

I changed the configuration and unpuged all disks exept the systemdisk.
The systemdisk contains:
- one system partition. (512 MB FAT32).
- Some free space
- One Start partition (NTFS) containing Windows Vista Ultimate SP1.
Then I startet the Update process f?r Vista SP2.
It worked simular to the last tries finishing step 3/3 with 100% percent. After some additional minutes, it startet to undo the changes.
Error code 0X80004005
To be very sure, additionally I pepared "Clean install".
Then I startet the Update process f?r Vista SP2 a... Read more

SP2 seems don't like your hdd
I found in your log this:

Process output: [l:109 [109]"BFSVC: GetFileAttributes(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Boot\BOOTSTAT.DAT) failed! Last Error = 0x2.
Process output: [l:109 [109]"BFSVC: GetFileAttributes(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Boot\BOOTSTAT.DAT) failed! Last Error = 0x2.

My solution:Reset the whole MBR disk (it is stronger than formatting partitions).Of course if you'll do you lose all data on hdd.
To do that I recommend this tool DIY DataRecovery MBRtool, backup/restore/edit the MBR (freeware)

Every time ANY Windows update is installed my Windows Mail contacts list becomes unusable, issuing the message 'unable to choose recipients'.
The only way around it that I know of is to backout to before the updates.
Other sites have recommended backing out specific updates but it's ALL updates - I've tried installing/removing them one by one and the issue occurs on each one.
I do NOT want to go to Windows Live and I don't want to pay for a new version of Outlook. Is there ANY way around this problem? Microsoft don't seem to be bothered in fixing it.

After searching through multiple forums and trying to download windows utility cleaner, etc - nothing has helped. Also, if I try to run the 'Check for Updates" link on my computer - if NEVER stops searching for updates and there for I cant update anything. Not sure where to start

A:Windows Check for updates keeps running-all installation/updates fail

Let's start with the easy stuff

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hello all, I have always wondered if Vista's setup downloads any patches or updates during its installation process? Or does it need access to the internet for any reason? I have always installed Vista connected to the LAN , just in case.. Any ideas?

A:Does Vista download updates during its installation?

Vista installs as is, then updates itself.
The reason for this is because Vista would need a stable OS to perform updates, this can only be accomplished once it is installed.

I posted here because this is a problem on a new installation rather than a regular update probleme. Sorry if I misplaced this post.

First the problem
I have Windows Seven Ultimate SP1

For two months everything was to hyper slow, to click a file asked 2 or 3 minutes, to open even more.
Obviously I checked the memory, as well as the presence of virus and malware with three various methods, without results.

So I decided to make "Repair Install" which had been a fantastic solution in past.

The repair Install with SP1 (I had made a dvd) went really smootly and well, the problem seemed settled, everything was fine.

Obviously, there were tons of Windows Updates to be made. The previous times, Windows update proposed bunch from 10 to 20 updates, wich was boring.

This time it proposes me a block of 142 updated (in one step). Waw! I was surprised but (naively) believed that it now possible. As said in the past it was done in several times.

I did as suggested, he 142 updates, and let the thing go.

So it does. Result : Windows becomes absolutely inaccessible (no possible way to get in a session), and opening make a loop (even in safe mood, furthermore no restaure option avalaible)

Now you may go to my questions, furter, or here are the problems details.

In detail here is what arrived.
I let the pc updating overnight, the long installation was going well, the restart also, until the " configuration of your desktop" ... Read more

You can slipstream them into the win7 installation files and then recompile the ISO to burn another disk or write to flash stick. In fact if you use a flash stick installer you can just swap out the existing Sources>Install.wim file with the new one, boot it and continue: Update 7 installation media - Windows 7 Help Forums

Otherwise I've never had problems with installing a huge batch of Updates but you might have better luck breaking them up in to smaller groups, with reboots. I'd also start by Checking for Updates, installing the drivers under both Important and Optional after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3), since the smooth functioning of the PC might depend upon these and Performance Updates under both categories.

If you have performance issues and have not yet done a perfect reinstall then I'd follow these same steps to get and keep a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 so you can experience, perhaps for the first time, native Win7 performance.

A:InPlace Upgrade to Windows7 from Vista-Updates for Installation Option

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Not sure a in-place upgrade is even possible if you need new installation media you can use this to get it easily

Personally I would clean install,
It's a lot easier to clean install these days with the unofficial sp2
There are essentially 3 updates needed for a clean install of windows that will get you updated through April of 2016

KB3020369 & KB3172605 & KB3125574 all can be downloaded from the M$ catalog using internet explorer
Microsoft Update Catalog

When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.

After restart you will need to ensure the built in windows update service is stopped and set to manual first too or it will conflict with the stand alone installer.

Afterwards reset the windows updates service to what it was before and update settings to your preference and check for updates
Should be only 50 or so updates left to install.

I also have the three required updates on my OneDrive if you can't or don't want to deal with the catalog,

I just got my laptop 2 days ago and it's brand new Vista compatible. In fact it came with Vista installed and it was working perfectly fine until I decided to reformat it so that I could check if my new hd i tried installing was the main reason for this installation failure.

I saw a post with similar problems explaining that the BIOS was in need to be updated, but my BIOS is up to date and vista compatible.

so is there a solution to this? I DO NOT want to update to 8117 because it always auto change my nick to profile name, status to available, and no dp...nor do i want to uninstall 8089 and msgplus.

I am afraid that Microsoft is indeed forcing you into upgrading. Unless you downgrade to Windows XP, you won't be able to use WLM 2009 anymore. I, too, don't like WLM 2011. So, I had to choose an alternative. Feel free to check these alternatives :

- aMSN (MSN only)

Hope that helps.

My computer bluesecreens a LOT (3 times just today), has been nearly since I built it 5 years ago and I've gone through everything to fix it. Last thing I've noticed is that there have been a couple of updates to my motherboard firmware but when I try to install them I just get an error that they won't work with a 64 bit OS (Win7 64). I thought about using a live CD running a 32 bit Windows just to install the update. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Any reason it might not be a good idea? I looked around and just at first glance saw one called Vista pe that looked pretty decent.

A:Installing updates via Windows Live CD

You may be able to flash it directly from the BIOS. My ASUS motherboards have an Easyflash utility built in. I just put the rom file on a thumb drive and do it all from the BIOS menu. The motherboard manufacturer may also have a utility to create a bootable thumb drive with the flash utility on it. Then you just boot from the thumb drive and run the utility. It might be easier than the live CD method.

Problem :

When I started up my computer today the internet explorer seemed to bug out. With bug out I mean it opens and closes instantly afterwards. Suddenly I see that I've available windows updates so I start to let it update but.. unfortunately here's where my problems starts.
They all seem to fail about 44 updates failed one by one. When I turn off the computer it updates those 44 again before shutting down completely ..

Now when I put the computer back on , and I log into my account I can see only 3 updates are available now (the other 41 are gone ? although when I check the log they're all failed). So I try to update those 3 and they fail as well and the other 41 are back in the list.

I've tried some things like installing "Microsoft fix it 5..*" There I got another error .. tried to fix it with : Error "The Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed" when installing or updating programs on Windows 7 or Windows Vista
But It doesn't solve anything (all 4 steps that are requested)

I wonder what this could be and if there's someone that has any idea how to resolve this problem with my OS.

I've tried running a save mode and test it there , doesn't work either. I've also ran I virus scan ..
This is the result

(the error list is pretty big so I will only post if really needed )

The Log & the CDS zipped files are in the attachment

Not sure if normal discussion, non-question threads are allowed, but...

Seriously, Windows Live Essentials is such a hassle to install / uninstall / reinstall.

When I went to delete Messenger to attempt a re-install, it wasn't listed in add or remove programs, so then I had to go delete the folder in Program Files x86.

Then I had issues with the Windows Live Essentials thinking it was still installed. Even CCleaner wasn't enough to get rid of whatever it was tricking the installer into thinking it still existed.

In the end, it took a long time of browsing forums and so forth until I had to use third party tools to get it to work. People have had to develop their own dedicated tools for this specific problem.

Seriously, Microsoft, the creators of the Windows OS, and one of the most established companies in the world, should not have such crappy problems. I'm so annoyed that I actually had to rant somewhere about it.

But, for future reference, is there any more simple way of repairing MSN without going through all this again?

If anyone here knows anyone that has anything to do with the development of Live Messenger : Pass this info up. It's seriously a headache to deal with. I love the features of the programs themselves - the Essentials Antivirus is enough to protect anyone's computer (who won't download dumb crap) and messenger is good (except blocking people in nearly impossible now). It's just the installation that's so...crap, really. You shouldn't be nearly forced ... Read more

I would like to install Windows Live on Vista Business, Service Pack 1, and have obtained the only installer I could find from the official site. However, it installs to c: by default, and I see no options to change this setting. Since I use c: only for system files, I'd like to know if it's possible to manually install the program to another drive.

Sorry mods if it's against the rules, but I didn't see warnings anywhere.

This solution is from ..    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/how-do-i-reinstall-wldcoredll/2075e9bf-2e5a-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=3

How to set a system restore point
. It seems the new Windows Live has grouped the wldcore.dll and wldlog.dll (used by Messenger, Contacts and Mail) to a folder c:\Program Files\Windows Live\Shared

Maybe because I did upgrade install it screwed up things.
The solution was simply copy paste those 2 files wldcore.dll and wldlog.dll from c:\Program Files\Windows Live\Shared to
c:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger
c:\Program Files\Windows Live\Contacts
c:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail
if all of that is a bit too much.....

Sorry this might be a dumb question, but will my computer be ok if I opened live messenger and sent a few messges while windows update was being installed on full load on my HDD? I'm kinda worried it would cause some bugs or errors since there was lag when I was typing, opening windows etc wtih live messenger.

A:Using live messenger during windows update installation

Just personal opinion, and others may disagree. I prefer to let Windows Update and other "critical" operations like system images, creation of restore points, etc not have anything else going on in the background. Whenever system files are being accessed, read, or written to, I'd rather have all of my computer's resources concentrating on just that one task. But that's just me.

When I download and install Windows Live Email 2011 onto Windows 7 64bit, will the installation automatically
find and install the correct server designations? Will the app then be ready for immediate use or is there anything else I have to do?

A:Solved: Windows Live Mail 2011 Installation on Windows 7 64bit

Windows Live Mail 2012 is the most current version.

I personally use it with Windows 7 32-bit.

If I remember correctly, you need to enter the correct email settings for your Internet Service Provider(ISP) after it's installed.

After you download and save the wlsetup-web.exe file, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to run it.

Make sure to uncheck all the extras you don't want to install with the email app.

If you don't, you'll wind up with a computer full unnecessary apps.

If you're not sure how to install it and set it up, you need to have a computer-knowledgeable person help you.

So I, today, reformatted my PC.

After installing some bare essentials (anti virus and firewall mainly) I then loaded up the website for windows update.

I was prompted to install service pack 3 (after the windows installer update), so I did before anything else. After I restarted, I went to the update site again to do the remaining updates, but after they were downloaded, every install failed.

The same is happening with the Windows Live Installer (as I wish to install windows live messenger). However, I could install Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Media Player 11 with no problems.

Any help would be much, much appreciated. Anything I can do to help with the troubleshooting, just say.

Thank you.

[quick edit: Windows was installed with a service pack 2 era disk. Home edition, too.]

[Edit: After doing the method in this post, it now works.]

A:Installation of windows updates

Hi and Welcome to TSF

This issue can be caused by many factors, the following below are basics steps to try to correct the issue.

Attempt 1: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.
This behavior may occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update has been corrupted. A good example of this is multiple updates will install but a select few always fail.

1. Click Start, click Run, and type in "cmd" (without quotations) and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window to start the Automatic Updates service.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press Enter.

Note: Please ensure the Automatic Updates service is stopped before we try to rename the folder.

2. Click Start, click Run, and type in "%windir%" (without quotations) and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
4. Click Start, click Run, and type in "cmd" (without quotations) and press Enter. Please run the command "net start WuAuServ" in the opened window to restart the service Automatic Updates.

Attempt 2: Start the relevant Windows Update services.
The cause of the issue also can be that the relevant Windows Update services were not enabled. Let us try the following steps to verify the relevant Windows Update services.

1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box a... Read more

Does anyone know why Microsoft canceled support/discontinued Microsoft Expression Web and why Windows Live Essentials, especially Windows Live Writer hasn't been updated in years? Both are great products but Windows Live Writer is my heartbeat but I stopped using it as i realized that Wordpress' dashboard is easier to work with now as it has been updated and I can upload my image galleries for a post flawlessly in WP's dashboard.

Windows Live Writer can't upload WordPress galleries to the WordPress site directly. It can only work with Picasa and OneDrive and the files are stored on those accounts while only the thumbnails get publisher to my WordPress site. I can't get the thumbnails to work in this manner anymore either as when i try to upload galleries using Windows Live Writer I get error messages saying it won't go through. That's why I stopped using Live Writer.

Expression Web seems okay but Adobe Muse can do better effects but I don't use Muse right now as it is problematic. If Muse and Expression Web were somehow fused, not by a company merger but shared the same features I would be all up for buying software like that. But my cousin who is a techie purchased Muse and Expression Web several years ago and was using them briefly and regretted using Expression Web as it is so basic and primitive. Adobe Muse is too tricky and the items never stay where you place them. I have seen people work with Muse at work and in tutorials but unfortunately all my... Read more

A:Windows Live Essentials Updates + Microsoft Expression Web

Expression Web is still available, just has been made free with little or no support. Microsoft seems to do well in reducing costs when things don't sell well due to competition from third-party products. As with all software one has to consider the advantages and disadvantages for their needs. I had to drop FrontPage when I went with the 64-bit version of Office 2010 and Expression Web is fine for my need. As for WordPress that was recommended by my Domain Host, I just couldn't get around the blogging part so do not use it. Serif has a product called WebPlus [ WebPlus X7 - Easy to use and professional web design software from Serif ] that seems useful but since they've moved all their offices to the UK my MasterCard and Visa cards get blocked by the card company 'due to high card fraud from the UK' so I'll keep my eyes open for alternatives.

I have noticed over the past 4 weeks that my Windows Store App Live tile displays a number of updates for example 19 - when you go into the store and click on updates there may be only 14 or 15 updates.

I know changes have been made to Skype updates and this is no longer available to update via the app - have there been any other changes I should be aware of? This is not just on one device but 4 in the same household. None of the Live tiles display the number of updates actually being available?

Previously the live tile and actual updates available have always matched?

Confused and would appreciate any help

Thank you

hey all

I am running a vista premium system on my packard bell laptop. everything seemed fine until a little while ago i copped a virus (freddy35) via facebook.

managed to remove it with malaware bytes but i now seem to have some real issues using any micriosoft products.

For example - i now cannot connect to my messenger service through windows live messenger - although i can get into it on msn messenger online.

Here, the fault appears to be with KEY PORTS - proxy or firewall settings. Firewall is disabled, i have no antivirus software running and still the problem persists. I tried the clean up option in windows live messenger connection trouble shooter to no avail. still shows key ports error. If its any help, bit torrent wont connect either.

my windows live mail will now no longer log into any of my hotmail addresses - my virgin media and googlemail accounts are still ok

i now cannot connect to microsoft updates - keep getting the red cross. tried everything.

have used antivirus programs to check for infections, nothing. run a complete check with tune up utilities 2009 - to no avail.

my friend and i did a disc check and a dll file integrity check - and no problems were found.

obviously the virus has changed some of my registry files but i cannot restore to an earlier state becuase the previous versions were corruped and had to be destroyed - i only have roll-backs going back a few weeks, none of which so... Read more

I have had Windows Live Messenger installed for a long time and I used to use it a lot, but not so much recently. Tonight I opened it up to try to contact someone and it opened fine, but the window included a message telling me that there was a newer version available and asked if I wanted to get the newer version. I clicked "yes" and an installation process began. I had a choice of things to install, but the only item I selected was Windows Live messenger. The process seemed to take longer than what I would have expected, but I patiently waited until it reached 100% installed. Unfortunately a message appeared telling me that it could not install Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Toolbar (which I had not asked for) and the installation was aborted. It gave an error number 0x80004004 for the Windows Live Messenger and for the Windows Live Toolbar it said it was unable to uninstall an older version of Windows Live Toolbar.

So I figured I would just keep using the version that I had, only that version no longer works. When I click on the icon for Windows Live Messenger I get a message saying that it cannot locate Windows Live Messeger.lnk.

So I went to "Add/Remove Programs" and tried to remove Windows Live Toolbar, but there I got a message saying that it could not find WLToolbar.msi. I then did a "Search" of my hard drive and the search results came up with nothing.

So then I went to www.microsoft.com, searched for Windows Live Messenger, ... Read more

A:Solved: Windows Live Messenger Installation Problem

I found an answer on another forum. I went to microsoft.com and downloaded a program named msicuu2.exe. When you install and run it, it displays a list of programs that have been successfully or unsuccessfully installed by a microsoft install program. You can then select one/all of those programs to remove. Although (at least in my case), it didn't really remove the software, it removed whatever it was that was keeping me from being able to install Windows Live Messenger. Everything is working fine now!
