I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In the last couple of weeks I've been getting a strange (to me anyway) blue screen that I have not seen before and a couple of other new screens. The first one has these messages: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. **STOP: 0x0000008E (or F4 instead of 8E on another day) (0x0000003,0x859077A8,0x8590791C,0x805c749A)" and "**SMTCPMON.SYS" appeared on one occasion but not the other"

Anyway, that was somewhat self explanatory. However, when I rebooted yesterday morning I got a new screen saying that windows could not start up because of a corrupted system file: windows\system32\config\system. I tried to reboot and reinstall XP, which I do periodically anyway, but then I had a very tough time doing that and it brought me to a "dos like" screen asking which drive I wanted to logon to. I didn't know how, so I ran a chkdsk from there which fixed the system file. Everything seemed to be fine yesterday. Then, I logged on this morning and got what seemed to be a worse screen:

Hi,

thanks for taking a look at this I hope you can help.

About a week ago my comp was running fine and I had no problems. I was using Win XP Pro on my Advent 6414 PIII 1.1 GHz laptop and was using AOL to connject to the internet. I had Anti Virus guard working there too and thought things were ok....

I upgraded the AV Guard but halfway through the setup i had to turn the computer off.

When I started it up on Monday, there was a progress bar at the bottom of the screen consisting of really chunky white bars.

The XP screen hung there for ages and when it did finally load, the programs running were prone to freezing. Specific symptoms were the Display Properties panel locking up and then saying there was a WIN32.DLL error (Not Responding) and that it had to shut down. The desktop picture froze and each subsequent time i tried to start the computer it took longer and longer to start. The programs hung for longer and froze earlier and it got to the point where I lost everything. I had to reformat the entire hard drive and re-install XP.

Surely this would have cured the problems despite wiping out my extensive and dare I say excellent music collection..aaaarrghhhh!!
Alas it did not. i have re-installed XP only to find similar re-occurrences of the same problems...programs slow to load, Explorer locks up (the start menu is the main one) and now the pictures that I loaded for my desktop are being halved each time i start up.

I learned my lesson and now have Nor... Read more

A:XP Problems: Slow to load, DLL broken, freezes, modem problems the list goes on..

How much do you know about installing XP?
And, what options did you select during the process?

(No, it's not a simple, linear, process.)
First of all, if you wipe the drive you should do it properly. That is, you get a copy of the Disk Manager software from your hard drive's manufactuer and you use THAT to wipe the Hard Drive from a boot disk. Low-level format the drive, which means you write zeros to the entire drive including the boot sector. That gives you a truely blank drive.

Then when you do the XP install, windows thinks the drive is "Virgin" and does a complete partition and format. No information is retained.

If you wanted to be faste (but lazy) about it, you could just delet the partitions on the drive and then make new partitions, and then install Windows, but let's be sure we've done everytyhing we can to start with a blank slate, shall we?

But you're not done yet: You need to get the device drivers from your PC mfg's website. Otherwise, all the drivers that XP doesn't have aren't there, and your hardware is in "Default" mode (if at all).

NOTE: Before you start to do any of this, check with your OEM to see if they have any special "Non-DOS" partitions on your model of laptop. If they do, all this is for naught: You'll have to get them to put those partitions back on your machine before you begin re-installing.

Compaq did this a few years back to a number of their models, and it was a huge headache to ITs everywhere... Read more

Hey I've been having major problems with my Laptop.
Every ten or so minutes when my McAfee 2010 security suite disables real-time scanning it'll re-enable itself causing a lot of alarming pop-up boxes which is slowing my computer. Not sure whats causing it but it seems like malware.
Next theres this process which starts at windows start-up (DivxUpdate.exe), I don't think this is actually a part of divx. I've read somewhere that it is a form of autorun malware, it consumes 99% of my cpu majorly slowing down my computer, I think I may have similar malware on here that are problematic.
Also my firefox frequently say that there's an unresponsive script which temporarily freezes my whole computer and when I finally manage to get to task manager I have to end the process which seems to be using a regular amount of cpu and memory.
I made a topic exactly 1 month ago but nobody answered so I thought I'd make a new one seeing as the problems are progressing and building up.

Thanks for any help I'm provided with.

ok so i have multiple problems.
1. my system's psu will sometimes fail randomly while i am trying to install the os (WinXPMCE'05). any thoughts on why or how i should fix it? i initially had a 500w raidmax but replaced it with a 650w antec because i thought it didnt have enough power.
2. i cant install my os. this could be due to me setting my one and only sata drive as raid, but i started to set it is ide in order to solve the problem. initially i couldnt get passed the formatting section of the windows installer until i switched it to ide. now, i cant get passed the 'saving files to disc' section. an error message always pops up saying

i didnt put the entire thing but this is what it says sometimes, othertimes i get error messages not exactly alike, but similar.

i cant tell if it is a software problem or what, but this is bugging the hell out of me. this must be my 23rd time rebooting. help by anyone would be appreciated. thanks.
here are my system specs, everything is out of the box, new. i only installed necessary equipment, others will have to wait as soon as i get this stupid OS to work.

I have just re-built my system with some new parts (almost finished) and the computer freezes after a short while. No blue screens or errors, just stops. If there is music playing it distorts for a little while (random noise really) and stops.

Specs: * AMD Phenom II X6 3.3 GHS [new]
* Corsair XMS3 DD3 1,333Mhz [new - wanted 2000Mhz but budget restrictions]
* Asus M4A87TD/USB3 [new]
* XFX 8500GT
* Couple of SATA 300 HDDs
* DVD RW
* 550w PSU

Cooling is stock and no overclocking etc.

All drives & BIOS are up to date as far as I can tell.

I've been through several PSU calculators online and the highest they came to was 444w (probably should get a bigger PSU but this one should be adequate, just has two SATA connectors which is the only downside).

CPU usage does not spike before the freeze and temp is in the low-mid 30s C (not F, stock cooler remember not liquid nitrogen).

Have run Memtest86 from a live disc and no errors reported.

Cloned the boot drive with a live disc and everything seemed to go fine, did a burn in test and even got an hours minecraft in. Then it froze again.

Thinking it may be driver issues rather than hardware so biting the bullet and doing a re-install. One day I will make a CD with all those sefull utilities I use, been meaning to for years.

After a reinstall on a different drive I've still had a couple of system freezes, at this point I think it is either the PSU or memory (or really bad luck and two iffy drives in a row, have a new drive on or... Read more

It has been almost 10 days. Anyone out there? Please help!===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. Hello,

I wasn't sure if I should put this under malware or vista...

For a couple months my computer has been extremely slow to do anything 70% of the time, including simple things like open a folder, play an mp3, open control panel, etc. It has occasionally had periods (several days in a row) where it will run really loud for 5 seconds before shutting down and restarting on its own. When it does this it does it consistently every 45 minutes. Then it will go a week or so without doing that all on its own. (I have been good about keeping the vents clean and blowing out the interior).

But last week, sister in law came in from Miss., and used facebook a great deal(that's the only change we can think of), which we've never used, and the computer went nuts. Now it freezes anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes after starting in normal mode. The power button has to be held down to shut it off and then pushed again to start again. It starts and runs fine in safe mode with networking, no problems. But starting up in normal mode now, it consistently has a problem starting either 4 or 5 times in a row, each progressively worse, with windows wanting to do a startup repair on the last one, before finally starting successfully in normal mode, only to freeze shortly thereafter. It will freeze whether we're doing anything or not.

I have Trendmicro antivirus and their help site told me to run Hijackthis which I did and then it suggested posting that log in one of these for... Read more

Please can someone help me??? Tearing hair out - and I don't have much!

Out of the blue, for no apparent reason, my problems appeared despite having up to date Norton AV and firewall.

Symptoms: very slow to load programs, extended periods of frozen screen
sometimes requiring a shutdown to restart. Now the computer will not install windows updates and will not now reinstall Norton - which was disabled with the original problem. When typing - in MS Word or web page forms - the cursor moves randomly around teh screen. I have to reposition it where I was, type a few words, and it's off again.

Definitely seems like a virus but neither Norton nor AVG or ad-aware have discovered anything untoward.

Sorry for the length but I would be really grateful if anyone can suggest a solution or indeed what the proble is.

Thanks

CJ

And then basically, I reinstalled everything I needed except useless Acer **** that I had beforehand.
Now, I have a clean Windows 7, correct?
Yeah, no.
It's either that the Windows 7 was infected; not genuine; pure bull**** trojan etc..
Or, it's something I downloaded while I had Windows Seven.

But anyways, I downloaded this, and had to system restore several times because of just nudgemania

In the last 24 hours, the system freezes up especially accessing ie explorer and sometimes with Outlook.

Starting last night, I also notice a huge increase in popups/adverts even though the blocker is still on. iexplorer would redirects to advertisement pages and only by using the back button would the desired page come up.

Starting this morning, through many siezures and reboots, I was able to download HJT and run a scan and to register on this site. In the last hour it is now even more persitent and anytime I try ie explorer, it immediately siezes. (thank God for this laptop, eh? )

I tried System Restore in both normal and safe mode and cannot even set a restore point. Was able to research and tried some fixes on that ensuring the "Task" "Remote" and "System Restore" services were all running and set to automatic. I am sure that the system restore and these other problems are not related, but would appreciate whatever assistance you can provide to get back on track.

It's probably not important, but not to leave anything out; the HJT log pasted below is from the desktop in question and not from this laptop. I hope I've given enough background and not made a total fool of myself.

dude, you have a hardware problem. your lcd backlights are not working, which is why the screen is black, but does have an image when the sun hits it. to fix that you'll need new ccl backlight blubs and the ballest to run them, not something most people can do, and costs alot.
as far as the rest of your problem, your grammer is so bad i don't understand what your are trying to say. it boots okay to safemode after improperly shutdown, but won't boot if you try to select what mode to boot into?

You might not have a malware problem. There's a "batch" of general fixes & checks that you can do.

run chkdsk /r

check device manager for flagged devices (make sure to check "show hidden devices")
download, install & run "speedfan" and check your temps

Media may have gone bad? I wouldn't trust it and get another one, it happens.
You are probably hitting a bad sector when it hangs, so I'd try to copy smaller amounts off of it.
If this is used in say a camera, then I would definitely toss/replace it once you got all you could.

All of this is in an HP Pavilion 7850US running Windows ME. Even after upgrading his RAM, system resources are still dipping to 73% free with no programs running. After a cold boot, his system resources only go to 81% free. I ran an updated version of Ad-aware SE and also Spybot S&D finding a number of threats and deleted them. There were a few trojan downloaders found and several instances of 180 Solutions. Also found was coolwebsearch and deleted. I have downloaded the newest version of HJT and my log is listed below.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith

A:Problems with system resources/Explorerer freezes up

Hello Keith,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this.. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Again, you should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CWShredder.exe and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and... Read more

I have a problem that I just can't figure out. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium.

Basically for no reason at all my programs (Word, Outlook, Google Earth, Internet Explorer, AVG anti-virus, etc, etc) all seem to have lost their 'connection' to the program on the computer. I click on the icon for any one of them and the 'Open with' dialogue box appears. (I think the term is that they have lost their 'association'??)

I cannot understand why this has happened and whilst I have managed to find a few of them and 're-connect' the icon with the program I am having a couple of very strange problems:

Firstly Adobe Reader seems just to not work. I therefore uninstalled it and tried to download a new copy from the Adobe site but every time I try I get a message saying: Operating system error! (16299.103.516 - then a whole load more numbers).

The second strange thing is that programs that seemed to open automatically on start up previously, and for which icons would appear in the bottom left of my screen (for example AVG) are now no longer appearing there. All I have is icons for the volumn and the battery.

Last but not least. In the start up menu I used to be able to right click on 'Computer' select properties and it would then show me System details. Now nothing happens when I click on properties.

All of this happened at once today without me really doing anything. I haven't downloaded anything nor done anything els... Read more

Hi,

Everytime I start my laptop, it loads up gets onto my homepage and then after about a minute freezes completely, meaning that I have to press the power button to turn it off and on again.

Please advise as to a remedy to this situation

Kind Regards

Daniel

A:Sony Vaio Technical Problems

Freezing can indicate an over heating issue. Clean out the inside the pc with a can of compressed air, if it is a laptop clean all air vents with a can of air. Keep the laptop elevated from bed, couch, and carpet like surfaces consider a cooling pad.

If you have a desktop access BIOS look at the temp and voltage readings. Also post the make and model of your machine, and PSU make and model including wattage. Custom build same thing including the brand and model of your motherboard, and graphics card if any.

Usually it's Huston that experiences technical problems but in this case we might call it Hollywood North

OK, let's take it from the top..

Using Video Explosion Deluxe (V1.5 from Nova Developments) as an editing program I was able to compile a short project of 30 minutes.

VED can output the results as an MPEG-2 or AVI file (as well as a few others)

So, to go to DVD, I have to import it into one of several DVD burning programs because you can't burn DVD directly from VED.

None of the several DVD burning programs I have were able to recognize files that were output by VED.

So I used "DivX to DVD" to convert the file.

That file was able to import into one of the DVD burning programs and I was finally able to burn it to DVD.

I tried the same process with a larger project almost 2 hours in length.

When using "DivX to DVD" it took two hours to convert but then started to loop to the beginning again! I had to click abort and therefore I don't think the file was processed properly.

So I have a few questions;

First, why would "DivX to DVD" loop like that? And how do you get that to stop?

Second, I would likely throw all these editing programs & DVD burners in the garbage if I could find one that you could import the raw footage, edit it, add chapter points, then burn it to DVD.

Has anyone had any luck with any such program?

As a sidenote, I also tried outputting the same two-hour program as an AVI file but it en... Read more

Okay-----there are plenty of inexpensive programs out there that have mpeg2 encoders built in----the Vegas entry level product as good. You can edit in the NLE, set your chapter points, then encode to mpeg2 and burn your DVD----They use the Tmpgec Code, a very good one.

I am having similar problems as others have with the task manager closing 1 second after opening. I also had the worm but applied the patch and it seems to be fixed....when I went to remove it, nothing was found but I had all the symptoms. The day after I fixed it, the task manager started acting up. Is there anyone who can explain to me, in non-technical terms, how to fix this? I have already renamed my task manager and can now access it, however, I have not found any of the rogue files specifically referred to. If I have a rogue file under another name, I would not have the first idea about how to find it. I also downloaded the prcview.exe which gave a more extensive list of processes running...but this does not help me as I don't know what to look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Task Manager problems but not a technical person....HELP

I've seen this happen many times. I my cases the system restore feature will bring back the worm. Disable the system restore feature and reapply the fix. Then you can reenable system restore is you want.

Dear Everybody,

I have been trying to connect to internet Wirelessly without success so far

As it stands now Netgear is installed and running very well on my laptop (IBM ThinkPad R40, Window XP) using an external Belkin USB Ethernet Adapter connected to WGR614 wireless router which in turn is connected to my D-link modem DSL 500B. I am also using a Network adapters Dual-Band Wi-Fi Wireless Mini PCI Adapter (PHILIPS COMPONENTS). When I checked my network connections everything is connected and working (LAN, 1394 Net Adapter and Wireless Network connection). As a result it is working and have access to internet .

But what I have not worked out yet is how to connect to internet directly without using my Belking USB Ethernet Adapter. When I disconnect my Ethernet adapter from my router I still have my router light flashing green (Wireless & internet) which make me believe the wireless adapter is still talking to the router but for some reasons I cannot access to internet anylonger and get the following message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I was told that my pb. lied with my window setup but I have no clue

I have ran a Network diagnostic and have look below about it please.

Please Help, I am having major computer issues and downloaded Hijack This but not sure what to delete to help my problems and what to leave. Computer had major spyware, malware, virus issues over past several months...did full system restore and redid all software in December...now still having issues - biggest problems seem to be: 1) programs sometimes will not load giving error messages about a file missing, etc. and 2) visually things disappear on the screen, icons, start menu etc, will become fuzzy colored mess like static unfixable unless I reboot computer...also when writing or reading emails or word files lines of text will just disappear, the email or document is still there and if I highlight the blank area and change the text color it will reappear...this is the weirdest things I have ever had happen to my computer. I run my entire at home business on this laptop and need to get control of it fast, please help in anyway you can. I run the most up to date version of trenmicro antivirus and anti-spyware but it doesn't seen to be helping.

Ok, here i go.

I have installed the game (from a disc) and it loaded up normally. The game began with a slighty stuttery intro and as the game begins i noticed that the characters were completely black, no shadying or contrast, just black! also any useable objects were too.

I scoured the internet for answers and came up with a few. My computer is pretty new and has great specs. Easily good enough to deal with the specs of the game. However i noticed that quite a few people have had the same problem as i. And it seems it stems from the fact that the game cannot be played properly by a multiple core computer (mine has four i think).

Firstly recommended was a patch which i have downloaded and has made no impact whatsoever. next was a action that seemed to cure the problem for a few people - use the task manager/set affinity to change the amount of cores/cpu's being used to one. When i did this i did notice that the game ran perfectly (speed/background colour) however the main problem (black charcters/items) remain.

As a self trained and very flawed (lol) computer tinkerer i have tried a few little things that have helped in game problems in the past (changing the compatibility to windows 95 etc etc) but alas no victory.

This game is one that ive owned for a while but my old PC couldnt run it, and now ive finally splashed on a decent PC i STILL cannot play it!

Any help or ideas would be gladly recieved.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double-click on the System icon. On the Performance tab click File System. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore. Click OK. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart Windows. When we have confirmed that your log file is clean, you may enable System Restore again by following the same steps as above except you should uncheck Disable System Restore.

Download CleanUp http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ and install the program. Run the utility and after it scans the HD..it will ask you to reboot/logoff. Say YES. Once rebooted proceed below.

Furthermore, when this happens it affects the computer adversely, causing it to hang momentarily while the 2 sounds play. This is a particular pain when recording video, as it leaves moments of frozen frames on the file.

It used to occur quite rarely, but at the moment it is very frequent and is driving me up the wall!

Any help would be really appreciated, thanks.

There are a few things wrong with this system. I probably should post them in a separate post, but I'll try one big post first and see how that works out.

The problems all started when there was a message that kept popping up:

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close"

And when my client would click "Send to Microsoft" the computer would lock up and he'd have to do a hard reboot. Then he figured out that if he hit "Debug" that it would not lock up.

In any respect, we did some research and found out that it might be malware/spyware.

So here is what we have done so far:

- Ran Spybot
- Removed threats (don't know how many; I was not there when the client did it)
- Ran MalwareBytes
- Removed three items
- Computer ran fine
- Ran scan with SuperAntispyware
- Found over 600 bad cookies
- Removed them

Then my client uninstalled TrendMicro Security Suite, which was a bit quirky. He said TrendMicro's site said to use the removal tool on the site to uninstall it. Then when he used the tool, the tool said to uninstall it via add/remove programs unless there was an issue. So he just used the tool anyway. But there are remnants of it still around. Most notable of the remnants are the extra network drivers in Device Manager. They mention TrendMicro as part of the driver name. So instead of one network driver for the NIC, there are two, and it is the TrendMicro one that works, not the plain... Read more

I recently updated my norton antivirus and added norton systemworks and confidential. Around this time i was also having issues with microsoft updates.... I've contacted both norton and microsoft and have finally gotten the microsoft update to finally install. But my system is still running extremely slow.

A:[SOLVED] system running extremely slow and i'm having a few problems

Hello connemara22

Norton and Windows Updates are two of the main reasons for a slow system. Malware being another.

Lets try some elimination.

Turn off "Automatic Updates" and see if there is any improvement
Right click My Computer/Properties/ Updates.
Turn it off here. You can always re-check the box later.
Run the system and see if things are any better.

Disconnect from the internet and disable Norton. Run the system and see if any better. Do not go online without re-enabling Norton

Turn Norton back on when you have finished testing

Check msconfig for entries not needed to run at startup

Start/Run and type in
msconfig
OK

Startup Tab
Keep the page open then go to one of the links below. They will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not. They will also identify any malware. Disable everything which is not needed to run at start up

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html

Read the Key at top of page. Use the Search box to check all your entries

When you reboot you will get a message saying you have started in "Selective Startup" Click "Don`t show this message again" then OK

Try these first and post back with the results

Hi everyone, I'm new to TS and this is my first post.. I've installed Win98se on my new computer and the installation process went smoothly without any hassles, but when I start up the computer and '98 begins the boot up sequence, the problems begin. It takes at least 2 to 3 mins for the boot up to complete and this is on a machine with a P4 3.6 Ghz CPU!

I don't understand why this is happening seeing as both my PII 350 Mhz with Win95OSR2 and my PII 233 Mhz with Win2000 Pro zip through their bootups within seconds..

After doing a search through yahoo/google & microsoft and suspecting this slothful performance might be down to bloated config/autoexec files I used EDIT to have a look and both of them had hardly any lines (my Win95 PC has much more). Not one to give up so quickly, I had a look in the startup folder but it's empty. Anyone have an idea as to what's causing the slow booting?

The second problem is to do with the real dos mode CD-ROM driver (cdrom.sys) supplied by on the NERO kit that came with my DVD/RW's. It's important for me to be able to run the PC in real dos mode from time to time (one of the reasons I'm running Win9x on a new comp), so I installed them and things became even worse..

Once '98 finally appears I can't access windows explorer or the My Computer desktop shortcut, If I try, the system halts and while the mouse pointer can be moved, there is no response to mouse clicks or the k... Read more

My first thought would be that your HD is probably too big for W98 to handle. I think the limit is 137GB

If you have more than 512MB memory, you need to set a VCACHE limit. Do a Google on it.

Also found this, and it looks like your PC is overkill for W98:

Something else:
You will need the updated fdisk.exe in order to see a hard drive larger than 64GB. It is found near the lower portion of the following MS webpage:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q263044 where it says:

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Hi, I am having very slow system performance that is mirroring a problem that rollin rog helped with back in late January. At that time, there appeared to be disk errors occurring and after running the check disk utility a couple of times….the problem seemed to subside, and the problem was marked solved. . Now it is back, and as bad as ever. I have tried running the check disk again a couple of times and that does not seem to be helping. Programs are taking forever to start. It is operating like a machine with very little ram, but has 504 mb of memory. When looking at the process manager, there does not appear to be anything hogging any resources. I am attaching a hjt this log in the event that this would prove helpful. Internet speed is fine, it is just incredibly slow opening programs, going from one program to another, etc. Help!!!

My system has been running slow (especially at start up) but the major problems seem to be related to all my video applications (online Netflix, Veoh, Amazon Unbox, and even just Windows Media Center). When I start up my computer, a few messages have said these applications have crashed or when I use them they time out and generally do not run well. Naturally, I would be very grateful to anyone who may have some help for this, and I'm only guessing that I may have a virus. I run on a Windows 7 Dell.

While trying to use HiJackThis, when I first started to scan it gave me directions on giving the application access to files, but when I followed the directions, another message popped up saying that I was denied write access to hosts file, and I needed to get administration approval to save in a certain file path (system32). Hello my name is Lee. I'm having many problems with my system at the moment and it's driving me crazy. I've had the laptop for about two and a half years now (its spec is 512mb RAM and 60Gb hard drive, Windows XP SP2). Around a year ago my laptop randomly began to reset itself and/or go very basic in regards to its colour (as if it was a 12bit display or something silly). I sent it in for repair and it came back working - for a while.

Around two months later it went again. This time, out of warranty, I disabled the ATI from running at startup and it seemed to solve the problem (although I can no longer play any decent games on it anymore). Everytime I load my system up it tells me its unloading the ATI driver and I just click "cancel". I also get two random messages, one which says its a fatal error or a DLL is missing and another saying something about power server failed to intialise or something (if you need to know exactly what these say I can let you know after a reboot). Anyway, my system seemed to be working ok regardless but it is running very slow. I don't have too much memory left on the hard drive but it does seem to be running much slower than it ought considering I don't have many programs running at a time.

I use Mozilla Firefox as a browser and after installing the new one it seems to randomly crash (especially when Adobe Acrobat or a YouTube video is buffering) and I have to come out of it and manually exit it via CTRL ALT DEL. I used Internet... Read more

Hi all,For several months my PC has been frustratingly slow. However, I have dealt with it. Now however, when I click on "start" my PC will completely freeze, not allowing me to access anything. When closing programs, the desktop slowly scrolls back onto the screen instead of instantly appearing. I wish there was more details to share but there is none to my knowledge. I have recently ran spybot S&D and ran a virus scan but it has not helped. I have followed the instructions on the preparation post and here is the data in the DDS log. I am attaching the other log files as well. Thanks for your help in advance. Issue: I'm working on a PC that freezes up after a period time (fluctuates).
WinXP pro with Sp1 (Will add SP2 when I resolve the current issue).

The issue started when the owner would use Outlook express and then walk away.;. when they came back, all was loked up, no mouse no nothing all they can do is hard power off and power back up.

I immediatley thought of the virus or screen saver, hibernation issues, or other power or memory issue.
We have been unable to get through a complete virus or spyware scan with out the computer locking up.

However, I've been able to consistently duplicate the issue by running "Spybots" and it appears to be locking at the same point (25%) in it's run.

Other Troublehshooting Action:
I checked the screen savever and power settings - appear to be fine.
I've checked hardware devices and drives appear to be fine.

I've begun first by looking at the memory (2 128 DDR PC2100) - I removed one at a time and reran the spybots (my measure) and I still get the same locking.
Secondly, I disconnected other hardware with no luck.
Is the anyway to test the processor?

Any suggestions, new direction appreciated.

Try running the scans in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode, begin repeatedly pressing and releasing the F8 key as the computer begins to boot up. That will get you to the boot menu where you can choose Safe Mode.

Anyone's help/thoughts would be appreciated!

My system randomly freezes and requires a hard shutdown. The mouse stops responding, the keyboard stops responding, the hard drive stops. The screen freezes so that everything is still visible, but nothing moves. Sound either stops or plays the same note continually.

I have had my system as-is for about 3 years now. Software has not changed much. After about 2 years these problems started. I did a clean reinstall of Windows with just a couple other programs (e.g. antivirus) which had been running fine previously and the problems continued. I have found that it freezes less frequently since I have left the case open (cooler) and run fewer programs in the background. The average cpu temp is 55 degrees C.

I think I am ready to start replacing hardware components. What would you start with first? Motherboard/cpu? Video card? Memory? And in what order?

Thank you for your time and thoughts on this.

My system:
Windows XP SP2
Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra motherboard
AMD Athlon 2600+ XP cpu
ATI 8500 Radeon 4x AGP
512 Mb DDR 400 RAM
80 Gb Maxtor HD

This is probably not considered BSOD, though it sometimes crashes system - usually just lose display and control so need to force shutdown.

I have had this problem since I built this HTPC in 2010 (Core i3 540 w onboard GPU, P7H55D-M EVO MB. Original system was W7 Ultimate x32 4 GB Kingston SSD. Recently reinstalled to W7 Ultimate x64 8GB Samsung 850 Pro. The problem persists exactly as it did before reinstall.

System is a dedicated HTPC with Windows Media Center, Ceton InfiniTV4 tuner card and LG WH08LS20 Blu-ray drive.

The problem is related specifically to Blu-Ray disc playback using PowerDVD (currently version 14) plugin within Media Center. The problem has never occurred in any other situation.

Scenario: I start viewing a Blu-ray movie. Playback proceeds normally and without issue for some time (typically 10 min to 1+ hours). Eventually display / audio freeze, then display disappears, system cannot be accessed to reboot, shutdown, rdp etc. Only solution is to force shutdown using pwr button. Upon reboot, Reliability Viewer always shows multiple video hardware errors per attached documentation.

I followed instructions for capturing information, though a few days after last occurrence - and again not sure there is BSOD dmp associated with this event. I did however also capture the Reliability Viewer information (1st occurrence and last occurrence) - details which include .dmp files.

Hoping to resolve this finally. Please let me know if addition... Read more
