How to mute a USB microphone in Windows 81

Q: How to mute a USB microphone in Windows 81

Hello,

I bought a Logitech USB microphone to use with DJ / mixing programs, but I cannot mute it on my desktop computer running with Windows 81. The computer recognises it and says the driver is up to date. The sound quality is fine, but the microphone is constantly on and can be heard in the speakers or headphones while I have it turned off in the programs. I have tried front and back USB ports and three different programs and it is always the same. I have an older laptop using Windows 7 and the microphone works perfectly with full control.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Make and model number of the microphone?

Do you have custom sound software on your PC?

You can always disable it too when not in usage:

I recently factory reset and installed windows 10 on my P51 and ever since the mute microphone and mute computer keys dont seem to function normally. The mute microphone key (above numpad and F4) does nothing at all, and the mute computer key seems to mute the computer but the on keyboard indicator (led above numpad) does not light up anymore. I tried seeing if it was an audio/ keyboard driver issue but they both say theyre up to date. Any suggestions?

Okay I have no idea if this is even the right place to ask, but I am running Windows 8.1 so yeah idk. I would really like to have a microphone mute key on my keyboard. I have no way of muting except going into Recording devices and I don't want to do that. On my keyboard at the top I have a few keys mean't for other things, such as one on the end which opens up the Music app, and i'd like to just change one of those keys to a mute key for my microphone. I have a Blue Snowball microphone if that helps. I also have the Alienware Multimedia Keyboard that came with my Alienware X51.

I'm thinking about buying a Blue Snowball iCE because they are fairly cheap and but have great sound quality. I've read some reviews and watched some videos and I'm very happy with this mic, the only problem is that is doesn't have a mute button. I use the mute button a lot because my parents come in to my room frequently and just start talking, so i need to mute my mic so my friends can't hear them. The Blue Snowball iCE mic doesn't have mute button on it so i need a quick way of muting my mic.

I thought of putting in a switch in the wire that goes into the PC. The mic is connected to the computer by a USB, is there an extension wire i could buy with a switch attached to it, that i could plug the mic into and then plug that into the computer?

I really need a fast way to mute my mic and if anybody has any ideas I'm open to them!

Thanks for reading and I hope you can help!

Try keeping up with the Vista service pack updates. Vista is up to Service Pack 2 and you are probably missing other critical updates as well

Hey,
Every time I restart my computer I have to re-mute my microphone in the levels tab in the sound option. I do this so I do not hear myself talking through my speakers from my microphone, but so I can still use the microphone for applications.

Also, the microphone boost turn's off every restart as well.
So pretty much, every time I restart I have to mute my microphone again and re-enable the microphone boost.

What I want is too not have to do this on every restart. It only takes me about five seconds to set everything back up so it's only slightly annoying.

I have a creative x-fi xtreme gamer fatality sound card. I have set the correct settings through the audio console as well, but it still reset's to the microphone being set on and sound boost off on restart.

Thanks for any help.

Hello. I have a new T450s with Windows 10.   I hit F4 and the amber light goes on showing the microphone is muted.  Problem is that it "looks" muted but it is not.  I have also gone in through the software to mute and it lights up the F4 buttton.. However, it doesn't actually mute the microphone.   So I can never mute the mic..  Is there a fix for this? I see others have had this problem in the past.Thank you.

A:Cannot mute microphone with new lenovo T450s

Same problem with an old E330. The problems started when upgrading to Windows 10 + Realtek HD Audio Drivers (or the Lenovo Realtek Audio drivers, just rebranded). Something in that combination breaks the microphone's ability to be muted by software. The button works ok, the On Screen Display shows the icon and it's shown as muted however still works.Muting it manually from within programs which use the microphone works as well, as does uninstalling the Realtek drivers and going forth with the default Windows 10 drivers (but then there's a loss of functionality with the sound - options).

The internal microphone on my Elitebook x360 doesn't work, it won't record.  I?ve had it a couple of months but only got the chance to start using it in the last two weeks.  It seems that there have been others with similar issues, so instead of start with the basics, here's what I?ve tried so far. In the 'Sound > Recording' tab (right click speaker in task bar) the internal microphone (Conextant ISST) is enabled and default (always was).  The green bars do not light up if talking into the microphone, but one or two bars will appear when I tap on the display. Internal microphone properties > Levels: microphone array 100%, microphone boost +36dB (max). I have tried other levels also.  The microphone does not mute by itself, as I read that others have experienced. Internal microphone properties > Advanced: have tried using lower default formats, exclusive mode: on and off, signal enhancements: on and off. In device manager, audio inputs and outputs: I have updated and then uninstalled and reinstalled the Internal microphone (Conextant ISST Audio) driver. In device manager, sound, video and game controllers: I have uninstalled, downloaded and installed new drivers for Conextant ISST Audio and Intel(R) Display Audio. The mic mute button on the keyboard (F8) is not on. In command prompt, as administrator, I have killed the svchost task in the name of the computer and then run Malwarebytes - did not fix anyth... Hello.

After a restart of my computer, the playback of my microphone un-mutes, which makes it so I am able to hear what I speak into my microphone, which I don't want.

I am able to fix this issue each time by going to Playback Devices > Speakers > Levels (Tab) and then mute the microphone.

But my question is. Why doesn't this stay after a restart?

Hi, Team. It has been 24-hrs since I found out my thinkpad is not turning on.I have used this last Saturday afternoon and shut down completely.I never ever put my TP into sleep mode or hibernate mode. When I woke up yesterday, 11am I found out that the Fn, Mute and Microphone keys are lit up. The fan is not working (the entire system is off). The temperature of the laptop is normal, not warm or heating up like it is being used. I have removed the external battery and power adapter, pushed the power button for more than 3mins., put back the battery and plugged the power adapter (the power button blinks when I plug the power adapter as it usually does when) and pushed the power button back - nothing happens. The Fn, Mute and Microphone buttons are still lit up and the TP is not turning on.I haven't pushed the emergency reset button at the back (I fear that I might lose all my files).Up until now, the same 3-keys are lit up. I need help as soon as possible.

On to the problem - have you tried installing the latest drivers for your audio device? You may also want to check the default recording device in Sounds & Audio properties from the Control Panel.

Hi, Try the following. Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63501-64000/sp63555.exe When done, hold down the Windows key and press R Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall. When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63001-63500/sp63408.exe When the Chipset reinstallation has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed,... Hi, recently I bought a new keyboard with multimedia keys
Model : Microsoft Wireless keyboard 1000
All the keys are working fine, I also installed the latest drivers and Intellitype Pro to the correct OS i'm using.
However, when I press the mute/unmute button, the volume bar shows up, but does not actually mute. It seems like it flashed the mute symbol for half a second but it still just stay unmute. I tried using the default Microsoft sound driver and the latest Realtek sound driver but still no luck.
I also tried turning HID services on and off but still the same
BUT, I remember the mute button WORKING until a few days ago.

I don't know if it is due to the Windows Update, or something to do with my motherboard driver or something else. The roll back driver option is greyed out in Device Manager so I don't assume that is the problem..

I'm currently using:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000
YAMAHA speakers YST-M15 (really old model)
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver 6.0.1.5859
ASUS M3A78-EM Motherboard

I'm really confused because if all the multimedia keys are working then it should not be a driver problem. If the volume up/down is working then it should not be speaker problem. It is ONLY the mute button that is not working.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

When I press the left control button (only the left one), my sound automatically mutes. It is the windows Master Volume that is being muted. If I leave the master volume control open I see that the checkbox "Mute All" becomes filled when i press the control button. I would like to disable this shourtcut key feature and I have so far been unable to find any way to do so in the volume options. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

A:Windows XP Automatic Mute Problem

This may be a setting on your keyboard software (if you have keyboard software installed) or a setting on your sound card.

Can you describe both to us, please? Somehow the CTRL key has been assigned this shortcut function, and this must have been done with some type of software associated with one of the above pieces of hardware.

This is a brand new laptop with Windows 10 installed. The FN + Microphone Mute key doesn't mute the microphone but rest of the FN items like Speaker Mute, Brightness etc work as expected. This is little annoying that I have to manually do it each time. Is there any drive update that can fix this issue?

A:T450s - FN + Mute key not working on Windows 10

Hi prven,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

I guess there is no option to mute microphone by pressing Fn+microphone mute button, all you have to do is just press on the microphone mute button I hope it may work. In my laptop I do the same and the microphone will set to mute mode.

Please find the link given below to know the features of function keys in Lenovo laptops.

Please let me know whether the above suggestion helped you.
Thank you, have a good day.

Hello all,

First time posting here as I have scoured the Internet and have not found a solution to my problem. I am hoping someone on here can help me out.

Just recently, when I go to mute the sound in Windows, it does nothing and sounds continues to still be played. The icon in my taskbar displays the red circle with the slash through it indicating that it has been "muted" when in fact it has not.

I am still able to adjust the volume with the slider and that works fine, just not mute.

Anybody have a clue as to what is going on here?

Thanks in advance for you help! This is driving my crazy!

A:Mute stopped working in Windows 7!

First suggestion, reinstall the sound drivers. Use the drivers from your PC vendor or motherboard vendor (You didn't fill out the My System Specs so we can only guess).

I have a red circle with an X in the middle on my icon tray and it keeps giving me a warning message. It says my media system is corrupt and that I need to update my sound and video codec. I try to open Media Player and it starts to load and shuts down and I get a message saying several types of media can not be opened. I've run a full system scan with Malwarebytes'. It restored sound, removed the icon and I was able to open media player. I restarted the computer as prompted by the program and when it came back on the icon was back on the tray and media player was no longer accesible. Attached is a copy of my log from the scan. Please help. Thank you in advance. Note: I initially had XP on my computer and am currently running Windows 2007.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 on my Hp DV9823CL. The quickplay and dvd buttons work, but the volume and mute buttons do not. This is what I sent HP:

problem description : I did a clean install of Windows 7. Prior to the clean install all quickplay buttons worked fine. Now the quickplay and the dvd buttons work, but the volume and mute buttons do not work.
troubleshooting : I reinstalled quickplay, as well as the quick play buton drivers that are listed. I also did a troubleshoot that worked once when I removed the battery and put it back in. This also does not fix the problem.

This is what their repsonse was:

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
Scott, as I was checking your notebook?s specification I found that your notebook was shipped with Windows Vista. Your notebook is not upgradable to windows 7 as there is no driver available your notebook?s driver page. Your notebook is design to perform its best in Windows Vista. So I request you to get back to the original operating system.
If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.

So do they really think, I should dump a better OS and go back to Vista, just because the volume and mute buttons do not work..there must be a solution.

scott,
I remember getting such a msg from HP one time. I was stubborn and got hold of another person at HP who pointed me to the info I needed. Trouble is your inquiry gets handled by a Tier 1 newbee who doesn't know up from down and only has a script of answers to questions. Hang in there.

Also, try out the WIN + X combo You will possibly find what you are looking for.
The WIN key is that one with the funny looking wavy flag on it.

Thanks,
I will try it ( I am working late the next couple day's,so I won't be able to untill then ). Also, I work in retail (electronics area) and have done all the common troubleshooting. I did run the advisor, prior to install, and there were no issues found.

Thanks again,
Scott

Try the Vista Drivers
Many hardware drivers for Vista will work for Windows 7.

I think HP uses a program to monitor the "extra" buttons like volume, play, mute, etc. Try the Vista version of that program for your laptop.

Also, look at the specs for a later version of your laptop that HP is selling with Windows 7, see if a newer version of that program is available for the newer PC and try it.

I used the drivers for newer model Dell Inspirons when I upgraded my 6000 to Vista, some worked, some did not. you may have to try several versions to get one that works ri... Read more
