I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There is a user, Dad, with admin privileges on a Windows 7 machine (this is me).

There are other users, kid1 and kid2, with no admin privileges (my kids ;-) )

I want to let kid1 and kid2 access the contents of a directory in my userspace C:\Users\Dad\ . In fact it's not at the top level, let's say it's C:\Users\Dad\ownCloud\photos (because it is). I want to let kid1 have read/write access and kid2 read only access.

I navigated my way to C:\Users\Dad\ownCloud and then right-clicked on photos, clicked on properties, clicked on the sharing tab, and did what looked like the sensible thing (gave the kids the required access).

I then logged in as kid2 and attempted to find my way to C:\Users\Dad\ownCloud\photos. I got there -- but on the way I saw far too much -- kid2 can see a complete list of the names of all files and directories in D:\Users\Dad (not ideal) and also names of all files and directories in C:\Users\Dad\ownCloud (which is not acceptable, because that is my entire life in the cloud).

Is this expected behaviour when sharing directories in Windows? If not, what did I do wrong?

If so then this is no good and I guess I need a workaround. The problem is that I am not at all sure that I can move the directory, because it part of a cloud storage service (like Dropbox, but a different company) and as far as I know that directory ...\ownCloud\photos (the one I want to share with my kids) must be a subdirectory of ...\ownCloud (the one that I really don't want my kids ... NTFS Folder Permissions

I'm thinking if you create a symbolic link in C:\Users\Public you may be able to let the kids go directly to the shared folder. Perhaps then you can deny Traverse permission to block the parent folder. But I haven't done it myself.

Stoik Joker, who has the NTFS permissions page in the above link, is also a regular poster on DonationCoder.com. You may be able to ask for clarifications there. And of course someone with SysAdmin type experience may chime in here.

If you succeed using external info please post the solution.

I'm trying to use PsTools to remotely send messages to clients (using the 'msg' program) regarding the network (e.g. a server is going to reboot). When using it in command prompt, it works for some machines, but for others, it errors about not being able to use the admin$ share on the target computer. I tried accessing the share via Run..., but again, it failed. The targets are all Windows XP. How do I make sure the admin$ share is accessible by the domain controller?

A:admin$ share

Usually any share with a $ on it is a default admin share and is
limited to the local computers admin acount.
You probably need to change them to standard shares by unsharing
it and clicking apply, then share it again and apply.
That should change the share to one without the $ limitation.

My computer started acting funny after watching videos online and getting tons of pop-ups. Some of which claimed I could have a potential virus. Now I know this came from a site and I should never read into it. but it had me wondering.
Then i noticed all of sudden some of the websites I was looking at like would stop opening and would be unavailble.
Now I have AVG Virus Protection on my computer. It is letting me know that my PC health is not good cause the administrative share is enabled and it says I should disable it.
i do not fully understand what this means and why this was an issue in the first place. What should I do? Do I enable or disable and why?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum but it looks like a great place.

I was wondering if anyone had found a solution to accessing the default admin shares (c$, d$, etc) on a vista machine over the network.

I've tried the solution mentioned here: Default Admin Share C$

But it didn't fix anything.

I can access other non-admin shares on the computer but can't access any of the admin shares. I'd rather not have to create more shares, but obviously that is a solution.

Thanks in advance.

I was trying to figure out a way to block admin share access over windows domain network.
These are my requirements:

Desktop Support Engineers should have administrator privileges on all domain joined windows workstation machines. Domain Users should not have administrator privileges on their workstations.Desktop support engineers should not be able to access admin share over the network.Domain Admin must have full access on Admin Share.
So I have added NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE as a member of Buit-In administrators group and I have added Desktop Support Group as a member of NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE.
Which actually blocked admin share access over network for Desktop support engineers. however I was not able to control Domain Users getting Administrative privileges on domain joined PCs from above settings.

How can I control this admin share access?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings all.

Here's what we're working with...

Windows XP Pro SP3 machines.
Workgroup environment connected to our company domain via Sonicwall VPN devices. Each workgroup computer has a WINS entry so we can resolve names to IP's.

I can ping the PC names, but when trying to access the administrative share, the PC is not found. I know i overlooked some mundane detail, and to be honest, i need a hand since my brain hurts.

I want to be able to share Administrator documents and files with user acoounts on the same computer.... without having access to the internet.

I only have one computer. But I have 7 different user accounts on that one computer. I want each of my users to have access to the Administrators documents (files and folders etc)

I went to Administrator Documents, then I Right clicked on a folder, then I clicked on Share With>specific people> I click on the user account and then I get a box saying my folder was succcessfully shared, and now I need to email a link to the specific user account.

I do all this and then switch user. I go to the users email and try to click on the link and it wont click. I try to copy and paste into the users documents, but it will not copy and paste.

I go to the user's Documents and try to see if there is a link there....but nothing is there.

What am I doing wrong?

My laptop has only ever had one admin user account with full access to sensitive information, but I have now added a non-admin account which needs occasional access to restricted content.

I want to give temporary access only to a personal folder.

It seems that once the non admin user opens the specific restricted folder (and I input my admin password), this gives permanent access to this folder. To deny access again, I have to log back into my admin account and click 'Stop Sharing'.

Is there a way to time-out access, or have access automatically suspended via switch user/log off?

Many thanks

Hi Yet again, Windows is frustratingly taking up all of my time and I have tried everything google has to offer to try and fix it but it seems like no one has screwed up as much as I have on whatever forum. Let me explain the problem: I'm trying to set my account to administrator because I can't install programs, change account settings, make any changes through CMD without getting the system error 5 access denied message and I can't set the administrator account through CMD either. I also don't have the permission to change anything in regedit and I can't even reset my pc because it requires an administrator password which I don't have, is not "nothing" nor is it administrator or admin or password and I can't change it through cmd either. I can't even access the administrator account because it is disabled and even with an elevated cmd I can't activate the "hidden" administrator account. I've ran malwarebytes and superantispyware and I am now looking for the Gandalf of all Geeks to help me solve this problem. I'd immensely appreciate it!

Hi, from my research I saw this is the best place to ask these types of question. Any help is appreciated.
Here is the gist of my issues:
Windows 10.
I had just finished downloading a file from our Google drive directory; it was for some anti virus.
Right after the anti virus installed Windows froze up, and an error popped up. It stated Windows had crashed or something along those lines.
I had to unplug the cord.
Once rebooting I noticed it was taking incredibly long. The screen went to yellow showing signs of loading, then to black. I could move my mouse here,
After this happened the login screen appeared. Everything was very slow. I tried to right click and noticed it freezing up.
After it finally loaded the login screen I entered in my pin, but it took over 10 minutes then went to black.
After other tries to boot I had very mixed signals. Sometimes it made it to the login, other times just a black screen.
On one occasion I got this error:
"The Group Policy Client Service Failed The Sign-in. The Universal Unique Identifier (UUID) Type Is Not Supported."
Sadly, this is for the admin account.
I have no idea where to go from here, and have a lot invested file, and program wise, and thus time wise into this set up, for work.
Any ideas where to go ? I cannot access system restore or anything as it won't let me log in.
Any help is appreciated.
Edit: title shouldn't say admin at the end. Meaning I cannot log in to the admin, or any other profile.

I hope someone can help me.

Just this morning i booted up as normal and the always annoying UAC notifications kept popping up. I was sure i had disabled these! Then i went to use my music software and it said that this account didn't have admin privileges.

I checked my user account and the check box states that is is an admin account and that UAC is turnd off. (i only have one account anyways)

Ive looked on google extensively, Tried making new profiles and copy the old one over, but that only worked to a certain point - lots of programs didn't work, lost mail settings etc. Not really workable.

Tried system restore to no avail.

Tried using the vista admin account and changing my account - rebooting - etc. No change.

My guess is that something has got corrupt in my user profile and windows is not remembering that i should be an admin. I can't use my software and i have a deadline!!

Any one who can help will win a magical prize or something!

I have a unusual case where I need to setup two mapped network drives as two different users to the same share location. When I attempt to map the second drive after inputting the user name and password the system goes on its merry way for a few seconds
and then returns me back to the username/password input.
If I change the second mapped network drive to use the IP address the two shares work happily. If I manipulate the host file and point two paths to the same address then I can also work around this problem. However, I would simply like to know why I am blocked
from setting two mapped drives to point to the same share with different credentials?
TestFolder on TestServer is shared to TestUser1 & TestUser2 where the IP of TestServer is
If I map S: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser1, if I then map T: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser2 it will not work.
Mapping S: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser1, if I then map T: to \\\TestFolder using TestUser2 it will work and I can access the folder as the two different users.
Case 3
If I map S: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser1, if I then map T: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser1 it will also work (but I am accessing S: & T: as the same user).
Why do cases 2 + 3 work, but case 1 does not?

Upon arriving at work today, our MDT server no longer runs install TS' on pcs. After logging on to the server I discovered that the deployment share has been messed up somehow- trying to connect to it shows an error message reading:
"The deployment share 'sharename and path' cannot be opened because it was created with a later version of Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. The version of the deployment share is 6.0.2223.0 while the current version is 5.1.1642.1"

Now I know that I haven't done any updates on the share, and there is another share that is still working on the same server, so I am stumped as to why this has happened! We cannot deploy computers until this is resolved, and I can't see to find any information
on it from my research.

Anyone ever seen this?

Edit: I've realized that version 6.0.2223.0 is MDT 2012, which we don't use. First of all- how is this possible? Second, can I upgrade to 2012 and preserve my existing deployment shares?

A:MDT Deployment Share version error

Upgrading the entire console to MDT 2012 and adding the (accidentally) upgraded deployment share seems to have got it back up and running- the OSD TS is currently testing this. I had to also upgrade the second deployment share in order to use it on MDT 2012,
but that went through without a hitch.

Still dumbfounded as to why this happened, or how a DS could be upgraded without the console itself actually upgrading. Luckily, the audit log also showed who did it :)

I have a small office that has a server, running Server 2008, that acts as a file server. There are several shares on the server that give access to our 5 users.

We have 5 workstations that all run Windows 7. Each workstation has the same 5 user accounts so any user can work on any of the 5 workstations.

This setup has been working perfectly for years. Now all of a sudden, one machine has starting giving the error 0x80070035 when trying to access the server shares. It can access any other workstation on the network, just not the server. It doesn't matter which of the 5 user accounts you log in as, you still receive this error. All 5 user accounts can access the server from any of the other workstations.

I've also tried entering the server name or the ip address in Internet Explorer on the problem workstation and am also unable to access the server this way.

I would really appreciate any suggestions to get this fixed.

OK, at first I thought it was a Norton 360 problem so I deleted Norton 360. The Windows firewall is no longer being controlled by it.

Windows firewall is turned off, it's a public location, printer and file sharing is turned on, discovery is on, I reloaded the default settings for the firewall, the owner is administrator which my login is set for. Didn't matter if the Windows firewall was turned on or off, I still got the error message above.

Hello all, today I finally got around to creating a home network between my two desktops and laptop. Well, I set it up using the Network Setup Wizard, and then attempted to share my "My Music" folder (22 GB) and "My Videos" folder (12 GB). Well, when I went to Properties->Sharing and checked the "Share this folder on the network" tab, I got an error message stating:

An error occured while trying to share My Music. The Server service is not started.
The shared resource was not created at this time.

Anyone have any ideas?

Edit: I think I have found why I can't share files on this computer. When I go to My Network Places and click on "View workgroup computers", I get another message saying:
Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this netowrk resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

I found this odd because this was the first computer I setup for networking. I have also googled this message, and found that it is commonly caused by the Windows Firewall. I have the Windows Firewall deactivated, and instead I'm using Zone Alarm.

All help is appreciated. Thanks

A:Error When Trying to Share Folders on a Home Network

Probably, the server service stopped ('entered the stopped state') because Windows detected illegally downloaded music and video files. This is standard behaviour.

I have an odd issue.. a user reports that they are unable to access a network shared folder from their PC. Here is what I have gathered so far:
-The network share is from their PC located at C:\SQL2014. The share name is SQL2014. Their hostname for this example is "ABC".
-If I attempt to connect to the share from the user's PC ABC to \\ABC\SQL2014 I get the generic error:
  "Windows cannot access \\ABC\SQL2014
You do not have permission to access \\ABC\SQL2014. Contact your network administrator to request access."
-If I attempt to connect to the share by ABC's IP \\\SQL2014 I can access it.
-If I attempt to connect to the share by ABC's FQDN at  \\ABC.domain.com\SQL2014 I can access it.
-If I map ABC\SQL2014 as a drive letter, I can access it.
-Connecting to this share works fine from any other PC other than ABC.
-I've confirmed the error is affecting any profile old or new on ABC, which means it is a PC-wide issue on ABC.
-If I share C:\SQL2014 as ANY OTHER NAME OTHER THAN SQL2014, I can access it. As in if I share C:\SQL2014 with the share name SQL2014a, I can access \\ABC\SQL2014a.
-Deleted the share and recreated - same issue.
-Created C:\Test and shared it as SQL2014, cannot access \\ABC\SQL2014. It is NOT an issue with the actual SQL2014 folder.

From internet searches I've found the following solutions do not affect my case:
-Clearing CSC/Offline cache (most common working solution)
-C... Read more

Dear admins, power users etc.
The last 36h hours i spend googling my problem but couldn't get any help to solve this issue. I have multiple Windows 7 machines (32bit and 64 bit) at home.

One machine shows my samba share in the network environment and i can access it via double click perfectly.
Another machine doesn't show my samba share in the network environment. However I can access it via \\Share\mount or via \\ip\mount (after accessing the mount it shows up in the network environment, not sure what causes the problem of not showing it in the network environment initally)
The "headache-giving" machine that i refer to in the introduction doesn't show the share in the network environment nor allowing me to access the \\Share\mount or \\ip\mount but only connecting to the samba share via mounting it as Networkdrive X,Y,Z...
As one can imagine googling this problem is not the easiest task and gives you a lot of false positive results. Trying to access my Share via \\Share\mount or \\ip\mount gives me the following error message:

(i apologize for it being german, however I hope that the smart ones will understand it anyways! )

As 2/3 or the windows machines can access the samba share, samba smb.conf problems can be excluded. So I strongly assume it is a Windows problem. I am running MCAfee Virusscan Enterprise. Windows Firewall is disabled and the machine is also in the same "WORKGROUP" as the samba share.

I really hope anyone of you have an idea tha... Read more

A:Samba Share Networkmounting as X,Y,Z works, \\Share\mount not

The error message is default when system cannot resolve the network address. Something is wrong and it could also be on the other end (Mac or Unix / Linux machine).

On the problem Windows rig, can NET VIEW see the Mac/Linux machine? Can you ping it?

I'm so tired of this error that I could I throw my computer down the window. So the thing is I'm trying to share my mobile connection from my computer to my xbox (which has worked before without any problems) but now when I click on properties on my mobile connection on the share tab to check the "allow sharing" box this error: 0x80004005 along with "undefined error" comes up.

Which seems unsolvable, think I've turned google inside out trying to find an solution. I've only found guys that got the exact same problem, but doesn't get any helping answers.

Sorry for my English, computer terms are a bit tricky to translate from Swedish.

P.S to avoid any unnecessary discussion about how I could want to share mobile connection to the xbox when it's only going to lag, it will not, it works like a dream when it chooses to work..

Best regards

A:Trying to share mobile connection to xbox, error 0x80004005

Check your connection box/modem, restart it, see if that works, if not, then check your xbox connection and your phone connection. If it still dosen't work, then i would consider asking a professional

Why is sharing so hard on windoze???

I have tried everything I could find to get this to work. Seems like renaming the user in 7 has caused the problem. Sharing works fine on a new user that I created but will not work on the renamed account. I even tried this

with no joy.

I would like to keep all the settings in the non sharing renamed account. Can it be copied into a new account then deleted or fixed?

Hi all, I have a weird problem. And also complicated, 'cos not even my CISCO Network teacher has been able to give me a solution. I think I need some smart people here

The thing is that I can't share my printer (connected by USB to my PC) with my laptop on another room, over the local network (in Win7 the name is Home Group).

The printer model is not relevant because time ago I was able to do what I'm trying now.

All my configurations are OK, at least the basic ones, because there's definetely something wrong with my PC, and here's why: if I take my laptop and put it next to the printer and connect it to it (by the same USB cable), I can access the printer with my PC, while it's been shared by the laptop.

That proves that the internal network is fine. Also, all the configurations of the printer and also of the home group are literally same in both PCs, the big one and the laptop.

Both PCs run Win7. I have tried this, Connect to printer error - Microsoft Windows Vista Community Forums - Vistaheads, but it didn't work.

The printer is also properly installed on my PC, it is not a driver problem or something like that.

My AV is ESET ESSBE 4, but I don't think it's related, because I have tried deactivating its firewall, and also, on the laptop the AV is the same and the
printer did work.

The services are also equal in both PC's now. I have even tried changing the network adaptor on my PC (from Ethernet to Wifi). Nothing.

I recently had problems with the home group, but ... Read more

A:Can't share printer on local network (0x00000012 error)

Do you have the Windows firewall turned on? If not you won't be able to share the printer until it's turned back on again.

Once that is done the link below shows some set up procedures that should work for you.

I have a "server" that ran win 7 and which I now updated to Win 10. On this server, there is truecrypt installed and a batch file which I call from a remote computer using psexec. This batch file mounts a truecrypt volume and shares this drive on the network. Sharing is done with a lines like this:

if exist E: (net share E=E:\ /GRANT:Name,Full >nul)

However, in win 10 this doesn't work anymore. The problem is that the command

net share E=E:\

can only be issued from an administrator-cmd now. Is there a way to allow using the "net share E=E:" command from a non-admin-commandline (I am hoping for a registry key...)?
Thanks a lot!

I am able to connect from XP to a network share at my workplace by giving login/password. However, when I try to connect from Windows 7 i get the error: "specified authentication package is unknown"

However, I am able to connect to another shares. From XP no one is having any problems in connecting to this share at all.

Have googled but to no avail. Found one suggestion to add 'authentication packages' key to registry but it was already present in my Win 7 and with the correct value.

Any help would be appreciated as I am at my wits end with this issue. Win 7 is working flawlessly otherwise. Much much better than XP. Vista was pretty much unusable on my laptop (HP TC 4400 tabletpc)

A:Network Share Error: specified authentication package is unknown

ok, you have specified the problem, but gave no information on any setups of the network(s). how are other supposed to help you unless they have ran into the specific error that you specified?( which i myself do not recall running into)

I have a custom built PC that I use for everything, running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I also have a custom built server running Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2. The 2 are connected to a Gigabit Router, via Gigabit connections. The 2 have been working great together for many months. Now all of a sudden, these last few days I've been unable to transfer files from the client computer to the server. Whenever I do, I get this error message:

An unexpected error is keeping you from moving (copying) the file. If you

I haven't really done anything different than I normally do, other than maybe install some Windows Updates. I haven't installed any new programs or hardware. All I'm trying to do is move some files over to my network share. The content doesn't seem to matter either. I can transfer small 1-2k text files ok, but anything larger like photos, documents, videos, etc throw up this error. I have noticed that it has a "Try Again" button, and sometimes clicking that works the first time, while other times I have to click it 4 or 5 times, but it does eventually transfer. I thought it might be a user privilege issue (like I don't have permission to move to THAT folder, etc) but I checked and my user account has full read/write capabilities to all folders on the sh...
