Strange file names being saved by Word 2003 (not temp files)

Q: Strange file names being saved by Word 2003 (not temp files)

I have a really strange problem here. Running MS Word 2003 on Server 2003. Approx 70 users and 5 admins.

Only a few user accounts and 1 admin account, Word will save the file to a 8 random alphanumeric character file in the same directory the file is being saved too.

The file itself seems to be a perfect duplicate of the original file and is most certainly not a temp file. I have checked Technet (no 2003 forums anymore) and searched the web, but nobody else seems to have had this problem.

Any ideas? Anybody else ever even heard of this behavior?

Preferred Solution: Strange file names being saved by Word 2003 (not temp files)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Strange file names being saved by Word 2003 (not temp files)

I do think these are temp files, they are 'rests' of the backups that are made on a timed interval.
I happens that on network drives they are not always removed, why? I don't know.
It doesn't happen on local drives.

I accidentally saved a different file over the one I was working on. The original was on a floppy. I did open it with XP and 2003 prior to looking at another file. I then "stupidly" saved the second file over top of my original. Is there a way to undo the save and return to my original doc?

well here it is plain and simple. Whenever i open a document and i go to open another document the first document has been renamed to somethin gliek ~$(rest of name goes here).doc. It also says when i try to open a document already open that MS office needs a converter to display this file correctly this feature is curently not installed wouold you like to install it. If you hit no then a box comes up with a bunch of [] in it and i just close it.

now another problem i have been having is there are some temp files that just won't delete ive tried manually, with Clean up!, and also with empty temp folders 283. They all can seem to delete them. The files are named, index.dat, (a whole bunch with similiar to) ~DF645.tmp. and one thats ~WRD2250.doc. one thing i notice is that they were all made today at about 8:11 or so.

Now i have just fixed MS word with the help of you guys and i greatly appreciate it ... here is the link to that thread. here

The all of sudden change of color print of file folders, from black to blue is suspicious enough to think there's a possible virus or spyware, causing the transformation of normal black printed to blue print.
Is there a way to correct the change of printed file color to blue? The changing started after updating a free word processor, at its website. After installing & using the program, my name files started turning blue.
Do Microsoft know the cause of this type of transformation?, It would help to cure it.

This is my first post and I hope I am in the right place. Tried to find previous ref but couldn't find anything. Any MS word 2007 open file will not save because it has gone to temp file name and original file deleted. Can recover by using 'save as' and changing name back to correct name but this has to happen every time and is very time consuming. Tried repair but nothing was wrong. I think it started after uploading latest drivers from AVG but don't see connection. It happens immediately a file is opened.

I doubt there's any chance of you solving this however,

Just downloaded .doc file of school work which was half finished, opened it up from Local/Temp from Firefox finsihed the work then saved. Closed it. Now can't find it in Temp or anywhere. My mistake.

Any chance of getting it back?

A:Temp File - Saved And Now It's Gone..

You opened it up from Outlook or firefox? There are hidden temporary folders that applications usually put this stuff in. You might want to check under ...documents and settings\your name\application data and look for microsoft and then Outlook for the temp file for Outlook and try the firefox folder for firefox. I have not opened a file within firefox before and as such cannot tell you where it puts the temporary files. You could also do a windows search for some of the text within the document and see if you can find it from there as well. Windows Key+F brings up the windows search window.

I have a laptop with Windows 8 and Word 2003 installed.
When I double-click on a .doc file in File Explorer, a warning window comes up that asks whether or not I will allow a program to make changes to my computer. When I click yes, Word 2003 opens, but the file does not open. There is a warning message that says that there was a problem sending the command to the program.
If I then click file-open, I can go to the file that I was trying to open from File Explorer, and the file will open normally.
How can I fix things so that I can open .doc files from File Explorer?

Well, this hasn't been pleasant. I downloaded a work-related XLS file from Gmail and opened it in OpenOffice to edit it. After putting in a good 7-8 hours of tedious work, I saved, closed it, and shut off my computer.

Today, I attempted to re-open it to finish what I'd started, only to be surprised by the complete absence of the file I'd been working on. Attempting to open it from the Recent Files menu in OpenOffice alerted me that my file no longer existed, and worse, that it was saved in the Appdata\Local\Temp folder.

I've tried a few random file recovery programs and nothing seems to pull it up whatsoever. I'd really rather not rewrite the entire document, as it involved a lot of research to find the numbers I was entering. Is there anything that can be done? Or is the Temp folder simply a permanent graveyard from which no deleted files can be recovered?

Good morning Bleeping Computer community,
I have the strangest thing happening in my Recent Files list on my Windows 10 computer.  Files with a ZERO byte size, NO create date, NO modify date and with name in Chinese characters appear in the Recent Files list.  This is the third time in 2 weeks I have noticed a batch of such files.  Below, I will paste in the file names that appear.  I tried copying the names into Google Translate, but that did not provide anything I understood.
These files do NOT exist if I browse to my desktop.  They are not it the Recycle Bin either.  I have unchecked all the HIDE options for File Explorer.
OS: Windows 10 Home
AV: Avast (purchased)
Make: Lenovo
What I have done so far:
1) Scan with Avast.  Nothing
2) Scan with Malware Bytes:  A few PUP that I removed.
Since those actions, the most recent batch of them appeared.  It seems a few repeat and here are the file names...

I upgraded my laptop HDD to SSD by cloning partitions. (I used Clonezilla)

Since then I cannot save any downloads using IE11. History is not saved and neither are cookies. When I try to move the folder my "Website Data Settings" in Internet Options shows "Current Location" as blank. When I try to view files, the folder is the default one C:\Users\......\Microsoft\Windows. If I try to move it, I get an error screen saying to "select a value between 8 and 8 for how much disk space Temporary Internet Files may use"

I have found various suggestions for this, but nothing seems to work:Creating a new user
Editing the Registry (Deleting "Cache" and "Lowcache" keys)
Using Safe Mode
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm currently thinking of reverting to my original HDD and re-cloning!

Hi there,

Having some problems here...

My laptop suddenly shut itself down for no reason. When I restarted it, I was given a fresh new desktop with new music folders, documents folder etc.etc.

I have since found out I was given a TEMP account - which is weird because I still logged into MY personal profile with no problems (and no warning messages about files being lost when I shut the computer down).

Anyway, since I didn't get any message, I worked on my website pages all day and saved the work into a folder on the "new" desktop.

HOWEVER... after restarting the computer the next day and logging into my profile, I was presented with my original desktop - - - BUT NO FOLDER WITH ALL MY WORK!

When I searched for the specific files and folder on my computer - I found the files, but I could not open them because "C:\Users\TEMP\(folder name)" did not exist!

Is there a way.. ANY WAY of getting those files back???

Any help will be thoroughly appreciated!!

I would like the location of Win 7 environment "temp" files to be saved to a new location other than the "C" drive partition. I now save "swap" page files to a partition "D", where I want the "temp" files also to be. The "D" partition is 15GB, which 8GB min to 10GB max is for the page file -- virtual-- which leaves 5GB that can be used for the Win 7 temp file storage.

How do I do this?

A:Solved: Change saved location for Win 7 temp files

To change Temp file location, you need to change some environment variables which are set in the System control panel.

1. Menu, Control Panel, System and Security, System
2. Advanced system settings
3. Advanced tab, Environment Variables
4. Under user or system variables, change TMP and TEMP to point to the new location e.g. D:\Temp.
5. Click OK
6. Click OK

I installed 2003 outlook and word (outlook editor) on my brand new Win 8.1 netbook and when typing the "TO" and "CC" lines the names show up but when pressing enter they will not be accepted. I have to enter the first couple of letters of the names and then press the "check names" icon and go through the list even though the one I wanted was the one that showed up on the auto fill line singularly.

I know the auto fill does not go to the outlook contact book but rather remembers the names as they are "sent".

I have used outlook for years on both Win XP and Win 7 (various 32+64, Pro, Ultimate) and now with Win 8 it will NOT work the same way. My brother has the identical netbook and is running Outlook 2007 and it performs the same way - will not allow enter to complete the autofill. Whatsup over there at MS?

Anyone know why?

It has also made appdata as hidden directory.

If we delete these files in next reboot they are created with new names and loaded to memory.

hi there,

I would like to know if it's normal that after doing a "maintenance" cleanup on the pc, Ccleaner & PC tools "Clen Your Disk" option, (cookie/temp files, etc), then IE11 will lose all saved passwords. on Ccleaner the option "Saved Password" is UNticked.

On Chrome and Firefox instead, even by cleaning cookies and temp files, the passwords are still there.

Is it a bug or is "normal" ? I am not saying my IE11 is not asking me to save passwords as some other people reported, mine works fine just that once you clean temp files and cookies, also the passwords go.

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

I'm at a loss with these. I really don't know who to contact about this. To start off this post; I've talked to some tech savvy friends online, they haven't got a clue what this is. Just some basic information: I'm running Windows7 OS (64-bit), HP G61 with Celeron Dual-core.

My system is Windows XP Home SP3. I thought temp files were usually found in the C:\Windows\Temp folder. There are 59 files named "Set.Tmp" in C:\Windows. I use several "Temp File" removal programs, CCleaner, EasyCleaner and ATF Cleaner but none of these programs found the 59 files. I just installed Revo Uninstaller and used the "Junk Files Cleaner" tool, it found the 59 files. The files location are C:\Windows\Set2A.Tmp and range from "Set2A - Set59". The files are all "Read-only"and I can open them with WordPad.

Are these files safe to remove? I heard all Temp Files are safe to remove but since 3 out of 4 Temp File removal program failed to find them and the files aren't located in the C:\Windows\Temp folder, I'm concerned.

A:Word 2007 - Recover Saved Over File

hi uncbba06,

Long story short - you're stuffed!

Someone else in TSG has said (or words to the affect of) "any file that you don't backup is a file you don't want".

If you don't save anywhere then you have nothing to fall back on.
Even if you have auto-backup switched on in Word, it only keeps the immediately preceding version.

Sorry, but gain something from this loss: adopt a backup strategy and use it; as a recommendation try 'Version Backup', look it up and use it for free, preferably backing up to a secondary hd.

Googled the problem and tried whatever i could to recover the file, though i didnt manage to find it.. Looking for anyone who could help me or at least tell me that the file is lost. Wouldn't have a problem to let someone use teamviewer to fix it if possible..
Im using win10 & Word2007

A:By mistake closed a NEVER SAVED word file

It is MOST LIKELY lost, unfortunately. As it was never saved your only chance is this

There has been a suggestion that this method will work but as you can see the subsequent post indicates that this was not available on 2007 editions

The following files popped up in my "C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp". Upon attempting to delete, get "Can't delete file. It's being used by another person or program." When scanned it with Malwarebytes, another sprang up. Now, upon attempting a further MWB scan, AM TOLD MALWAREBYTES IS ALREADY RUNNING!--WON'T SCAN!
Tried running the MWB file assassin, says "must start over to clean", but files are there again after startup.

The files:~DF394f.tmp, ~DF843.tmp,~DF444.tmp,

What are they/how do I get rid of them????

Thanks much for your help

im using a toshiba laptop and ever since i used a pen drive on it two days ago, there's been some strange processes running on it.
there's a file funny ust scandal.avi.exe in the c: drive which i've deleted but it keeps coming back.
i did a search on the internet too about it and apparently its a smss.exe and a killer.exe files virus or something. there were some steps which i followed and removed the files.
but now there're a lot of strange named .exe files running as processes on my computer, mostly named like win****.exe, when i see the file location, its always in the temp folder of the computer. Now, sometimes windows that i've opened simply DISSAPEAR! i'm using chrome also, and after a few minutes working on it, it just ENDS...and when i open task manager, there are like these randomly named .exe files like i told you about.
i used hijack this to generate a log, if you could please take a look at it and tell me how to get rid of this virus or whatever it is.
i'd really appreciate it. thank you.

On July 4, I noticed the following problem with moving files within Windows Explorer. I'd move the file, and then my HDD activity LED would go nuts and I'd suffer a severe system slow-down. Since my problem was clearly to do with HDD access, I figured the most logical places to go looking were the temp directories. So I opened up several Windows Explorer windows to view all my temp directories, and moved a file and I noticed the following:

In c:\windows\temp two files were being created. Both were SC##.tmp where # is some valid hex character, and one of them ballooned to more than 150MB. Then they both vanished. Interesting. I triggered it again with Task Manager running, but no new task was created. I'm running Kaspersky AVPro 4.x and Pest Patrol Corporate 4.x, and stopping them didn't stop the problem. Stopping AVPCC.exe looked like it did, but it seems to have been a fluke thing.

I've run up-to-date scans using Kaspersky, Pest Patrol, Pandascan, AdAware, SpyBot, and Spy Sweeper, and they all come up negative. I also didn't install any new software between July 1 and July 4. I was moving very large files around to trigger this, like 165mb install files and 300mb video files.

The problem is not virtual memory being added to the swap file, and it's not my anti-virus scanner examining the file as it gets moved or anything, and no attempt to access the internet is being made when the files are finished doing what they're doing. The pro... Read more

A:Strange, large temp files

In case it helps, I've attached a screenshot of my windows explorer window near the conclusion of one of these large files being made. Note please the second smaller file, which stopped growth almost immediately at 124kb. I tried opening that file in Textpad... it didn't work.

There're a lot of strange named .exe files running as processes on my computer, mostly named like win****.exe, when I see the file location, its always in the temp folder of the computer.

I have used CCleaner, Spybot, MB, SAS, and ComboFix (and MGtools) several times and they have not found the problem.

I do not know what running service is creating these files (every 35 minutes to be exact.. after I delete the processes and the files from the temp folder).

If you have encountered this before, please advise.

Thank you.

My aunt deleted about 20 pages of a word document file. In word office 2000 I think. She closed the file and then clicked "yes" that she wanted to save it. So now it the document was saved in this blank state. It was saved before she deleted all the writing. Is there a way I can get the writing back that used to be in this document?

I have a file in my Temp folder called, "Perflib_Perfdata_798.dat" that cannot be deleted.

It seems to generate a "WCESCOMM.LOG" file in the same folder that keeps growing with repeated lines that say, over and over:

"10/18/2006 13:28:26.828 - Connection: failure to listen on any socket, stop listening.
10/18/2006 13:28:26.843 - Connection: Disable listening for a new socket connection (1)."

Additionally, other files such as "frqhqerganyc.ABI" and "PMShared" are added.

I think WCESCOMM.LOG has to do with ActiveSynch for my Treo, but I can't understand why it is doing this and I haven't noticed it before.

Any ideas? Thanks!

A:Strange File In Temp Folder

Unless you r-e-a-l-l-y have a need for Microsoft ActiveSync, get rid of it because it's more trouble than it's worth.

You should be able to delete all files and folders from within the TEMP folders in:

If some of them won't delete, restart your computer and try again. If they still won't delete, wait another day and try again.

I have a problem with a program not saving preset data. Possibly due to harlink extenstion with only one piece of software.

I use symbolic hardlinks on my system but I do not know if the following has any bearing on the issue with the software I am using.

The software is a plugin that works within a host digital audio workstation software (Steinberg Cubase and plugin Soundtoys V5) and uses presets for different settings.

All software is legit and registered. I have contacted the developer regarding the issue with no resolve so trying here as the issue may largely be to do with windows.

The associate plugin has been installed with admin permissions and the host DAW software is run with full administrative rights. I have double checked that there are no hardlink main or subfolders used in the installation path for the plugin software.

All other 3rd party plugins work fine when saving presets and using symbolic links of which there's about 60+ 3rd party plugins installed using the main host system, however this particular software is not saving correctly.

It will save the preset name as a zero byte file and reports unable to save at location.

All other plugins work fine even when using symbolic links when saving preset data.

The issue may have been to do with a previous install of the soundtoys software as a phantom install directory is being created during the installation

E:\Users\Public\Documents\Soundtoys\Soundtoys 5

I did originally install the ... Read more

A:Data files not saving correctly [File names but zero byte files]

If you can select the save location, try saving to a different folder or on your desktop. It could be access right issue. I would find the specific folder, right-click on it, select Properties and then click the Security tab. To make sure there is no access restriction, I would add the user Everyone and give him (as well all the others) full access, just in case.

A:I need a word document I accidentally saved in temporary internet files

Hi Elise. . .

If possible, go to the email and download it again and save it to your documents folder.

All files that are downloaded first go to the temorary storage area then are copied out to your chosen location. How do you know it is "stuck" in the temp IE file area?

What is the path (if known - like c:\users\<user name>\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet files) and what is the name of the file?

Regards. . .

I noticed my laptop going a bit slow recently, and I figured something was wrong.
I'm running windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2.  Windows is up to date according to windows updater.
I have Eset Nod32 Antivirus 4 which starts up automatically.
I also occastionally run Malwarebytes, which hasn't found anything.
I tried to empty my windows/temp folder, and could not delete 3 files:
I did some searching on these forums and elsewhere, and saw recommendations for others with some of those files to try a scan with SuperAntiSpyware
I ran a complete scan in safe mode, which came up with a few things:
I removed those, and a second scan shows up all clean.
However, I am still unable to delete those temp files outside of safe mode.
If I delete them on safe mode, they're back on the next system restart.
When I look at task manager, I see a lot of disk activity.  It does stop sometimes, but it's still a bit concerning.  I was hoping someone could help me diagnose what's going on here.
I appreciate any help you are able to offer,

I have noticed lately, an abundance of file names that follow the format: me_iOj98bxCF6gRR and such. Some of them I can delete, some of them return a "sharing violation response, the source or destination may be in use." I constantly (at least daily) run AVG, Spybot S&D, AdAware, HijackThis!, and all these return good reports.
Does anyone know what these are all about?

Welcome to TSG!!

Make a folder on your hard drive, like My Documents\HJT
Download Hijackthis.
Unzip the file to the folder on your hard drive.

Double click on Hijackthis.exe then click on the "Scan" button, then click on "Save Log".

Copy and paste it back here and someone will be happy to review it.

Don't make any changes until instructed to do so.

It's the first time I post on a forum, it's because I'm in panic. A chapter of my PhD is gone and I need to submit in a week. I have a backup of a few days ago, but it would really take me too much time to make it for next week.

I have vista and word 2007. The concerned word file, is file I already have for a month (regularly opening and saving it)
I opened it few days ago, saved regularly (not closing), left it open for a few days on my pc. When I closed the word file, I wasn't given the option to save anymore (I didn't care because I knew I saved regularly) Word just closed.
When I restarted my pc next day and clicked on the shortcut of this file, it said it couldn't find the file anymore. When I browsed to the folder, I SAW the file, I clicked on it and got the message that the file was not existing. After this, the file disappeared...definitely

I tried to look for .tmp .asd and .bkw but found nothing.

Can please anyone help me.... I'm really desperate...
thx, Lieven

A:Previously saved word file disappeared - deadline in one week..

Rely on your backup. Leaving open files for long periods is inviting disaster.

How large is/was the file?
