Solved: Windows Media Player & Flash Player choppy playback

Q: Solved: Windows Media Player & Flash Player choppy playback

Hi,

I've been having problems listening to music on windows media player and watching flash videos. The playback is choppy (sometimes gets stuck and generally bounces around) but also my system seems to take an age to start up and is slow.

I've run disk-defragmentor, scandisk, spybot, adaware, AVG etc. But no luck.

This has come about since I've put about 20GB of music onto my laptop (I still have around 47GB of 70GB free). However, when Windows Media Player is not open the system still runs slowly and I have no luck running flash videos.

The only possible solution I can think of is deleting the music but I'm a bit hesitatant to do so because it took me ages to put it on!

Anyway, thanks very much for any help you can give me!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I am playing music in the media player, at first the sound is fine, but after awhile it begins to become choppy. And sometimes when streaming on the internet, the same thing happens but right away. It is not the speakers because the sound will start then stop, over and over. It is not the internet because this happens in media player which does not require the internet to run. I've updated and troubleshooted and nothing seems to help. I have an HP DV 9000, 64 bit, Windows 7 operating system.

A:Choppy Playback From Windows Media Player

First, make sure you are using the HP provided sound driver and not the generic Windows installed "HD Audio Codec". In most cases the vendor, (in this case HP) provided sound driver is needed for proper operation.

Second, does this happen if the Windows Media Player is the only program you have open?

Finally, because Audio is considered a low priority item in Windows it is on a shared IRQ (Interrupt) with some higher priority device, that can cause sound interruptions. Uninstalling the sound in the Device Manager (but not the driver) and then restarting the PC will sometimes put the sound on a different shared IRQ and help to minimize interruptions.

Hey,

I have a problem. The video playback in browser, every browser, using Flash plugin [e.g. YouTube, Dailymotion, etc.] plays smoothly but freezes for a second or two every once in a while. This happens during full screen playback as well as windowed one.

I also have a problem getting smooth playback using windowed mode of SubEdit player [I translate stuff so need this player feature, can't replace it for Media Player Classic], even though full screen playback is just fine. Same clips playback perfectly in MPC, VLC and other players. I guess the problem is somehow connected with the player, although my colleagues didn't experience this problem, neither did they experience choppy Flash playback.

Any ideas? I'm using 190.38_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql as drivers.

I am no longer able to play DVDs in Windows Media Player. The initial symptom was a lack of audio, but it appears that it's also not playing them correctly in general as there is no option to bring up the DVD menu nor does it appear.

I haven't attempted to do this for several weeks, so System Restore is out of the question. DVDs play fine in Corel WinDVD Plus, but I prefer Windows Media Player. Corel's codec should be able to be used by Windows Media Player. I assume that's how it worked before since without it I couldn't play DVDs in WMP at all.

Windows Media Player can play other audio and video files just fine, so it's not a problem with an incorrect sound or output device. I've tried searching for a solution, but Google appears to get more useless by the day. Most "results" are just links to descriptions of other people's problems sometimes years old with no good solutions or suggestions.

HD youtube videos used to work perfectly for me, and then when I updated my flash player, they turned into steaming piles of <1FPS slideshows. They were so choppy that you couldn't even recognize them as videos.

I searched and searched for a solution, and finally today I found this old thread via google:

http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia/755164-solved-windows-media-player-flash.html

and the fix described in it worked like a charm!

To review:

Go to Control Panel > System > Hardware(tab) > Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers > Primary IDE Channel (right click and choose properties)

Click on the "Driver" tab then "Uninstall". Windows will try to scare you off with some stupid "are you sure?!?!" message. Tell it yes, and to shut up. Then you will have to restart your machine for the uninstall to complete. Then you will have to restart again after it reinstalls what you just deleted.

After that my problem was fixed.

I was surprised that a solution posted in 2008 is still so relevant in the twilight of 2011. **It seems like they should have worked this bug out of flash player updates by now.**

Hello guys!

So our church youth group is making a Christmas music video and I'm in charge of editing it. I get on the computer, connect the camera, and saved all the clips in one folder. But the problem is that it wouldn't play on Windows Media Player, but it plays on Quicktime. So I had to convert mp4 to wmv so I can use Movie Maker to edit. But when I try playing it on Windows Media again, the all the clips are very choppy. The sound is fine but since the video is choppy, the words dont go together with the video. How do I fix this? I'm not a computer guy so can you please explain in English? Thanks!

A:windows media player (wmv files) very choppy?

What are the details of the MP4 files you're editing? (see instructions here)
If the video stream is MPEG-4 (and not H.264), I suggest using MP4Cam2AVI to losslessly convert to AVI for feeding into Movie Maker. http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/
Lossless means the video and audio streams are not modified (they're just repackaged into a different container, in this case AVI). If the audio's integer or AAC, you may have to convert it to MP3 (just the audio part).
If the video's H.264, you could use the same tool to convert it to DivX video (lossy process unfortunately, but the results are still good).

If you want to natively import MP4 files into movie maker, the process is rather painful, and it doesn't always work.
I wrote some steps here, but I haven't tested them on Vista yet. Feel free to test and report your results. (the article was for MOV, but it also works with MP4)

I'm not quite sure whether this is a usual or even a simple problem to work out, but any help I can get would be much appreciated.

The long and short of it is that I would like to be able to play DVDs in Windows Media Player. I have an hp Compaq - Windows XP - with Windows Media Player on it preinstalled. I can play CDs through it just fine. In fact, the computer's pretty quick in general, so generally if I do put a CD into the drive, it reads it rather quick.

However, when I put a DVD into the drive, it doesn't read it at all. My first thought was that I didn't have the right DVD codecs, so I did a search for DVD decoder codecs through 'Run', and found that I did, hosted by Cyberlink (honestly, I can't remember if I downloaded that or if it came preinstalled, but I've got it, at least).

At this point, I decided to try to start it through 'My Computer'. However, going to My Computer, it shows the D Drive as being completely empty. If I click on it, it won't even open anything, even if I've got a DVD in the drive. So somehow my drive isn't working on DVDs. I tried other media players and it didn't work with them, so I'm thinking it must be the drive itself not working, or something. Doesn't make sense to me, though, because the computer's brand new - got it for Christmas.

Again, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi. First, sorry if this is a repeat. I looked and didn't find anything too similar.

My problem is that everything I watch on WMP is washed out looking. In other words, colors are lighter, as if I were watching a copy of a copy of a VHS tape.

I am pretty sure I caused this (duh) but don't know how to fix it. I was looking for a program to convert .swf (flash) files to .avi so I could edit them. I downloaded one program, it worked, but the playback was washed out so I uninstalled it and tried another one. I had the same problem. At the time I just thought they were both bad programs but in retrospect it seems something happened to my WMP during the process.

I've uninstalled them all as best I could and used ccleaner to try and wipe leftover stuff from them on my registry, but the problem persists. Other forums related to flv players suggest that it has to do with overlapping calls to directx or something like that but I've tried turning off video acceleration and it didn't help.

Any ideas of what to check/try to change would be most appreciated.

Whenever I play a video in full screen after a while (normally 10 seconds) Windows Media Player slows down. for example when I move the mouse to view the menu it opens really slowly like slow motion or something. The video playing does the same thing aswell, the video will be slow but the audios still normal and then when I close the Player the audio still plays for a while even though the Player isnt even running (again as though the response to closing the program is slow).

This happens with all videos (DVD's, movies on my HDD, music videos on my HDD and even online videos) like if a video is playing on a website if I right click and load up full screen it'll slow down and slow the whole computer down until I stop the video.

I have no problems with other video playing programs (DivX, VLC player, Media Player Classic even).

I tried the video acceleration thing but it makes the videos play terrible aswell (normally a line going through the video)

anyone know what is wrong or if I could download anything to help it (codecs or software etc) ?

A:Windows Media Player v9...playback sucks!

The skipping and jumping playback in other threads I've seen looks like it happens when playing music from a CD, which is probably something to do with the burning process of the CD. Are you talking about music from CD's? Are they burnt CD's? Or are they files on your computer?

I was copying some CD's for a friend being shipped off to Qatar when after the 4th disc, the playback turned really choppy I can't even get 5 seconds into a song. Now even when I rip the music onto my HD (without actually playing the disc), I get the same choppiness when I play it back off the HD. The 1st 4 discs I ripped will write and playback just fine. When I tried to play them again (thinking maybe it's just the discs skipping or something) those were just as choppy. I tried both my normal CD drive and my CD-RW/DVD drive and both give me the same results.

I'm not sure if this is a WMP 10 problem since I just built my pc and never had v9 on it.

Anyone else have this problem? I'd appreciate anything anyone can suggest.

Thanks.

I can't say I've seen this problem before. But I might suggest using something other that WMP to rip the music. There are tons of free programs out there, I use Musicmatch Jukebox. If you are still getting problems with a different application, then it could be your drives themselves. You might check to make sure DMA is enabled as well.

I've read that I should update some codecs? Update the drivers?

Media Player 32bit will prompt a window with "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file." and when I click web help, the code in the title is the error. I've installed a codec pack for Media Player and Media Player Plus, these haven't and probably shouldn't cause playback errors. The 64bit Media Player plays back all MP3s so I've resorted to using that currently, but it means I can't play FLAC files etc.

In the SF thread I initially started, with every MP3 that plays on VLC, it won't always state the codec information, and it's not related to which tracks play and don't on the 32bit Media Player. I've also attempted removing ID3 headers as the Microsoft help page suggested to no avail.

Really appreciate any help in advance!

I listen to audio recordings of conference calls and edit transcriptions of them. When I had Windows XP and and an earlier version of Windows Media Player, I was able to use either a menu command or a keyboard command to increase or slow the speed of playback, and the player responded instantly to these commands. Now I have Vista and its new Windows Media Player 11, and there is a delay of 5-10 seconds between when I use the command and when the recording actually slows down or speeds up. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Alternatively, can anyone suggest another media player that would work better? I've tried Real Player and VLan, neither of which appears to have this control at all, and Goldwave, which has the controls I need in two different windows and doesn't work particularly well.

I was wondering if someone could help out on an issue I have with playback via WMP .

My computer is an HP pavilion and has WMP and Beats Audio built in .

The beats audio looks like it is just a glorified equalizer to me but WMP does not work without it.

My problem is that I have WMP on shuffle and just listen to whatever track plays. Which works fine.

What occurs is the track will play loudly for a few seconds and then lower it's volume itself and continues to play but the volume seems to increase up and down as it plays not to deafening levels just slightly but it is noticeable when playng.

I have disabled volume leveling in the player and re set it but the issue still occurs .

Has anyone come across this issue ?

regards Rod

Hi
I'm not sure when it started exactly but it's got too bad to ignore now. When watching embedded flash movies in Firefox they play out really stuttery and choppy. The audio is fine but the videos isn't smooth at all.
I have Win 7 64-bit on a 2.53 dual core with 4Gb RAM so I don't think it's a hardware issue. I've made sure I have the latest updates of Firefox, Flash add-on for firefox, Direct X.
I've also tried uninstalling the IDE device driver and re-installing it as suggested by one forum. I've also tried unchecking the 'use hardware acceleration' option in the flash settings.
I found a blog that gave instructions for using a greasemonkey script to play flash content using VLC player. When I play any media files with VLC, it seems to work OK so I thought this would be good, but I couldn't get it to work and it only works for youtube videos, not Vimeo ones.
When I look at the system performance, when a flash video is playing the processor use is at about 70% and the process called 'plugin-container' which is for Firefox uses about 70Mb of memory. When I close the tab with the flash movie content, the processor use drops to between 0% and 10% and the plugin-container uses about 10Mb of memory.
Is there some setting I can change to just allow the movies to play smoothly. Youtube videos are just about bearable but Vimeo ones are pretty much unwatchable.
Any help appreciated
Thanks

A:Choppy flash player movies

It could be what is know as buffering. The only possible solution that I know is, when it happens stop the video and give it a chance to catch up. When you restart it should work fine.

Hello, I have been searching for an answer to my problem. I've tried several things, but none works for me. I need help. I am willing to just start from scratch. I just want to watch videos. I'm pretty sure it is not my internet connection as I am able to watch videos on other pc's without the choppiness. I am on an emachine e625, running vista basic. What else do you need to know? I'm pretty computer literate, just stumped here and need some guidance. Thanks! update: posted in wrong forum, posted this to audio/video in applications.Edit: Moved topic from Windows Vista to the more appropriate forum. Also deleted the other topic in Audio and Video. ~ Animal

It starts correctly, no video issues but after few seconds the sounds goes way lot, gets choppy..I've had no success in finding a solution to this. I've tried uninstalling flash player, installing archived versions...but no luck...Do you have any pointers on how to fix this..?
My PC is: Win 7 Pro 64 Bit, AMD Phenom II X4 955, 4GB Ram and ATI Radeon HD 5770 Gcard etc.
Thanks

I skimmed through some flash related threads but couldn't find answer to my issue.

I have no problem with flash video playback but performance, especially on larger flash apps (as in resolution), is very poor. I have a flash site, that I am working on at the moment, that plays perfectly smooth under Windows XP but gets choppy and slow in Windows 7. And I wasn't able to nail down the problem yet. I can't link to the flash file yet (well, I could since it is not in English anyway - but not at the moment) to show you what is the problematic flash but I noticed it happening in many Newgrounds.com flash games and movies as well. It either gets slow, choppy or both.

Did anyone get similar problem?

Thanks, but as I said it is not video playback I have problem with - its flash apps that are slow.

Hello. I have Windows XP Professional Service pack 3. I am using MSI ATI Radeon HD R4350 video card. I have VLC player 2.0.8.0 version (latest). When I play any audio or video file, everything plays in slow motion. On YouTube, I easily play 1080 HD videos and my other video played and browser players play videos without any problems. I downloaded Microsoft .Net Framework just in case. It didn't help. I have direct X 9 and older version of Catalyst which I cannot change or it will mess up my VGA monitor desktop settings, so I don't want to update it. The version I have is 2009.0813.2131.36817

Please help. Thank you.

Have you tried an older version?

Or have you used an older version of VLC on this computer in the past?  If so, did it work?  In other words, have you always had this problem with VLC on this computer?

I have a problem opening any media file in any of the Media Players viz., RealOne Player build 6.0.11.868 or my Windows Media Player 10.
Whenever I open the above mentioned Media Players on my system, their interface opens up and after I open and select any media (usually audio) file, the player keeps on connecting to the file and takes more than 1 minute and above in opening and playing any valid and good media file, may it be a .wma or .mp3 audio file.
How to fasten the dead slow speed of the players?

PLEASE HELP!!!

I have been having this issue with windows media player on both my Windows 7 laptops. When playing music files, there is a short "skip" near the end of every song. Also, crossfading has never worked properly. When crossfading is enabled, the transition between the first and second song is fine. After that, crossfading rarely works and there seems to be more "dead Space" between songs. This issue occurs with all versions of Windows Media Player used with Windows 7. I never had this problem with Windows Vista or Windows 8. I am surprised that Microsoft hasn't had a remedy.     Thank you

A:windows media player windows 7 playback problems

Hi Truckermikemct I have the same problem, but only when I play an entire album. If I play songs individually the problem isn't there, so I can only presume it's a bug in WMP for Windows 7. I too, never experienced it in previous Windows. Have you tried playing an album in Windows Media Center instead? (Not tried it myself....) Failing that, download something like Media Player Classic or VLC player to see if it solves the problem.
