powers in, but start button wont start computer

Q: powers in, but start button wont start computer

i really have no idea, i believe its a problem with the actual start up button instead of the computer itself, ive pried the thing open, seeing the generator is on, everythings in place and there are lights on, showing there is power. any ideas?

Preferred Solution: powers in, but start button wont start computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I turn my computer off one day only to find it wont start the next day. I open the case up and see the led is on. I flip the switch on the power supply off then on and quickly press the power button. My computer starts but the following time I shut down the computer it again wont start and now the led is blinking. I've never had any issues like this before, any help would be appreciated.

I don't routinely use many usb devices, only my mouse and keyboard and every now and then my ipod. I figure the issue is likely either the power supply or the motherboard. The ps is almost two years old while the motherboard is only about three months old.

A:Computer wont start, power supply wont start, blinking led

It sounds to me like your PSU is the problem, get a hold of another and plug it to your computer and see if that will make it start, if it doesn't it might be BOTH your motherboard and PSU. A bad PSU will burn a motherboard.

No matter what option i pick in the safe mode list, the computer will not start. when i choose any of the safe modes, (safe mode, safe mode with networking etc) the computer displays a list of random commands (i dont understand any of it) and then restarts. If I try to Start Windows Normally, or use last settings that worked, it seems to start loading, and then restarts.

Any ideas?

Everytime I start my computer it powers up but nothing happens.

The power light and HDD light comes on. The HDD light doesn't flicker though so the HardDrive may not be running.
The monitor doesn't come on. It remains on stand by.
So I'm not sure if the OP is loading.

Although if I turn my computer off and on again at the mains and then start my computer it works fine.

It seems that it could be either a BIOs setting or a monitor problem. Or it could be an XP problem when I shut down.

This seems to have started out of the blue.
I recently wired up to a router for internet sharing. And tried (unsucessfully) to install the NTL software. It turned out I never needed the software.
Apart from some updates I have not changed anything else.

Does anyone Know what the problem could be? And now to fix it?

A:Everytime I start my computer it powers up but nothing happens.

You need to try a different power supply first.

My Dell Studio has just crashed and wont restart. The mute and volume up buttons are flashing and the volume down button is solidly lit. I could not find the diagnostic code when searching the internet. I could find pretty much every other diagnostic code apart from this one.

Any advice would be most welcome.

A:Dell Studio 1535 wont start. Blinking mute and volume up button, solid volume down button.

Hi Andy,
Welcome to Dell community!
As you have correctly pointed out, the diagnostic code that you have mentioned is not among the codes available to isolate the failure for a Studio 1535 laptop. The closest code is: blinking Mute LED and Volume up LED, and an off Volume down LED which is for USB controller initialization failure. Disconnect any external devices connected and try powering on the computer.
Reseating the memory modules too can help us. Please refer the following link for the Studio 1535 service manual for instructions: http://bit.ly/10PrLgH
If issue persists, the laptop’s motherboard has to be replaced. Refer the following link to check the computer’s warranty status: http://dell.to/10pMa86
If the computer has active warranty, please send me the service tag and registered owner’s name on the computer in a Private Message. To send me a Private Message, click my User name, and then click Start Conversation.
If the warranty on the computer has expired, you may contact our expired warranty services to purchase/replace the compatible parts. Please refer the following link that has contact details for our Expired Warranty Services: http://dell.to/14FoBtb

my start button wont work, i cannot restart my computer and even from the sign on screen the only option i ave it to shut down. my icons are still on the taskbar but i cannot view them and when i open my browsers its deleting my last sessions even when i have them saved to appear each time i open the browser. my time and date is gone as well as any viable option to get to my drivers and computer settings. the only thing ive been able to get to is the actio of using the windows button and pressing r but each seach i get an error message that anything i type cant be found. help!

A:my start button wont work

Just for starters, Hold the windows key down and press the X key. See if you get a menu that should have several options as well as the option to shut down or restart. See if that will work and let me know. If it does, select command prompt (Admin) and copy/paste this into the window. sfc /scannow. If it says errors were found, reboot and run it again. You may have to run it 3 times before getting the 'Windows found no integrity violations', which is what you want it to say. Let me know how it goes, and welcome to Tenforums.

I posted this in the hardware section because i know its gotta be hardware related. On one of my older computers, which is a HP(bought in 2002), wont start at all. Not even the Compaq logo will display, which means BIOS wont start either. so i cant boot at all, or operate the computer in anyway. This happened right after i installed a gig of RAM, i was upgrading from 512 mb to 1 gig, they were 2 different cards, 512 each, and both had 189 pins. I installed them, booted up and nothing.

I really dint think there is a solution for this though, because after that, i put the 512 RAM back in and it still didnt work. Im thinking the motherboard was fried, by static electricity maybe. if thats the case than ill just get a new computer. which leads me to my next question.
How do i access my Harddrive? I have a lot of valuable data on there and an expensive music collection, as well as a bounch of backed up movies.
Any help is really appreciated guys, thanks in advance.

Hi, I use windows washer occasionally to keep my hdd clean and as empty as possible. I have only 85 gig hdd, so it full most of the time.

I followed instuctions on how to change the name of your start button, or change the text it displays on it rather than 'start'. It envolves changing the explorer exe file to something else and uses some hacker program to help do that along with regedit and so on.

Now Window Washer cannot find anything to scan, it just starts and then no sooner stops with no files washed. I tried adding the new explorer file to the custom wash list but it made no difference. I also wiped it and re installed it but it still finds no files to wash.

Any help?

Thanks in advance,

I have a DELL XPS laptop that makes beeping sounds and the screen is still black after I pressed the power button.
It makes 5 beeping sounds per interval and goes on until it shuts itself down. What should I do and who should I contact to help me fix my laptop?

A:My Laptop Makes Beep sound when I press power button and it wont Start

Hi AhLong
Thanks for writing to us.
5 beeps usually means CMOS failure, now it could be the battery failure or the motherboard failure. If your system is under warranty we can get it repaired or else you can check with a local Dell authorized repair center and get it checked.
You can try another CMOS battery if available.
Do provide us your system tag#, email address and name via private message.

Microsoft has decided to bring back the "Start button" in Windows 8.1, that's why they have included start button windows 8.1 preview. But that button is not actually a start button. The classic multi-step applicaton launcher is that we have seen in windows 7 and earlier versions of microsoft windows is still missing. Windows 8.1 Start Button is just a shortcut to the windows 8's start menu.

A:Windows 8.1 preview Start button isn't actually a Start button

Yeah..its really not what we are looking for. Best bet is to still use one of the start menu replacements.

The reason i detached the parts because the wire of WLAN runs thru the monitor and i cant get thru to fix it unless i remove the monitor. Now when i put all the parts back in the descending order, i just got a beep and i got no display it just blank, I listen very carefully and got 4 beeps fading. Can you help me? Don't know what to do.

A:Making Beep sound 4 times repeatedly, when I press power button and it wont Start

4 beep sound may indicate a Ram failure according to source : www.dell.com/.../en
Try and reseat the RAMs. Or try to use 1 RAM to check which RAM is having faulty.
Hope this helps.

A:My inspiron 5010 makes continuous beep sound when I press power button and it wont Start

If it's a continuous single beep, it means the mainboard is bad.  If it's some other pattern such as four beeps - pause - four, etc., post the sequence and someone can help you interpret the error.

Switched to the XP-ish Classic Start Menu, plus Adjust for Best Performance, in the usual prescribed way, no third-party interface-modifiers. All looks & works fine except that the Start button itself looks like TWO buttons -- one atop the other and just slightly out of alignment (screenshot here).

Nothing?s malfunctioning, but it sure looks silly. I haven?t done anything unusual, apart from docking the taskbar on the right side of the screen. What could be causing this, and how can I un-cause it? Would Classic Shell fix this?

Grateful for any clues.

Dell E510 Intell Pentium D, 1g memory, WinXP

I have been having a problem starting my computer from the tower.Called Dell* the first time but it just happened to start up while I was talking to them. They said I probably pushed the button on a slant?
Well it has happened twice since. I shut down normally last night & this morning pushed the start button (made sure I wasn't "slanted") same thing . I get a flashing orange light and then a voice that says "Press repeat button to receive setup instructions".

Where is a repeat button? I have held the start button in for a minimum of 3 minutes but it won't shut off. Pulled power & let it sit for 15 min. & tried again..flashing orange. So I just let it continue flashing and this time it finally shut off. Went to start again..walla..it started! Now this is the third time and I am afraid the next time it won't start ever.
Someone out there able to help?

*Was surprised at Dell trying to sell me tech help in North America so I could get faster response time & a North American. This was before they would start to answer my question!

My Start Button works to the extent that I can click it and browse all of my programs. I also have all of the categories on the right side like "Computer", "Control Panel", etc.

What I don't have are any of my recently used programs. That area is blank. I have noticed over the years that I typically use about the same 10-15 programs frequently and the loss of these "instant shortcuts" means I have to drill down through the hierarchy of Start Menu programs to find the one I want to launch. I do have a number of programs pinned to the Taskbar, but I'd really like to have my Start Button work like it used to.

Any suggestions?

PS: The only one that does show up is the Command Prompt which I had copied from its default location because I use it so much. I had it located outside the "Programs" folder on the Start Menu so it would be at the top.

No big deal but still a bit annoying. the big deal is that the last month orso my PC won't start after i push the on/off power button, it won't light up. The light at the back of the pc is on as is the light on the adapter.  I tend to remove  power, even unplug it for a little while and try again, sometimes this works and when the pc is running it is working perfectly, but i dredd turning it off because it's a luck of the draw if it will start up again the next morning. is this a simple thing to fix, repair if so how?  Because right now I don't have the money to buy a new pc.

I have a HP Pavillion desktop and last week I ran a the spyware program and kept getting this notice that adware32 had been detected and did I want to remove it. Finally, I indicated yes. The next time I started my computer, it got to the screen where my desktop appeared but the icons did not load. and there was no start button or task bar. The next screen that appears is the Welcome screen with the icons HP owner and Administrator. When either is clicked, the option buttons standby, restart, and shutdown appear.

I have looked online and attempted to key in the suggested things in the command prompt but they were not recognized and typing HELP took me to a list that didn't help me at all to figure out what to do next. I heard from someone else that I might have to reinstall the system with the disk that came with it orignally. The issue with that is , I don't remember even having to put a disk in and have not been able to locate one in my disk collection. Am I going to have to take this in to a repair place?

A:Computer boots with no task bar/start button

Try this.

Press and hold the windows button and then press R, and the Run window will open, in the text area type explorer.exe and press enter.

If after that the task bar appears then most likely explorer.exe is not loading when your computer boots.

Tell me what happens after you try it.

Greetings all,

This is my first post. Let me try to explain this as much as possible. I've been having this problem of when I first start up my computer the fans start spinning but the computer seems to start and then shut off like it has a short. Almost like a wire is loose touching and then not touching. Once it goes thru this for a few minutes then it will fire up all the way and run fine. I've gone back into my case and made sure that all cables were securely connected. Removed and reseated the memory in different slots as well as the video card. I'm thinking about removing the cpu and making sure that the pins are fully connected too.

Could this be a sign a my power supply about to go bad? What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for listening.

A:When I push the power button my computer doesn't start up all the way.

I am working on my in-laws computer (product number: G4B05AA). After a recent update from AMD the computer began to exhibit problem. First, it did not run smoothly. Then blue screens happened regularly (Thread Stuck in Device Driver) from which the only way to restart was to unplug the computer. One time it would not power up. Following the instructions for a hard reset worked. After letting it run all night because I thought that Windows 10 was trying to do an update, it still ran poorly. Then there came the final blue screen (same issue). After unplugging it, it will not restart at all. Even a hard reset will not work, no noises, only the continuously blinking power button. All periperals, except keyboard and mouse, have been removed. It does not appear to be an overheating issue. Thanks for your help.

what should i do?

A:guys my computer wont start and wont have a display

does it beep any. if not this will indicate more major problems. (unless you dont have beep speaker installed) a mother board is programed with a set of beep to play if there is a problem like such as three beeps if the ram is not working, 1 long beep if the vid card is not working etc etc. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR BEEPs WILL BE. if you are not getting these then you need to find out why. see if you have a speaker inside your case. if you do and all of your fans spin but still no action from you pc then you may have a larger problem such as mother board or processor.

After only just having one problem solved on here I have encountered another and I think it is fairly problematic but am far from understanding it - please help!!!

I downloaded the new version of Internet Explorer (version 8) as this was an option when I signed onto the web this afternoon (I previously had IE 7 and am running Windows XP version 2).

But after downloading this I had trouble getting onto the net (though I seemed to be able to initially). So I restarted the PC. But, it did not restart.

Instead I get the following message on a plain black screen when I try to run my computer:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

What is this file? I have an Acer Aspire notebook which came installed with Windows XP Version 2 (I have no CD drive currently).

I have looked on the microsoft website (I am currently on a different PC) but dont understand anything that is posted on their about this problem.

Do I need to re-install a new operating system? Will this mean I will loose all my data that is on my computer? This is very precious to me as I am travelling and I have saved on my computer photos and diary entries - I would be very upset to loose them.

What is my best course of action? Should I take it to a specialist. Again I really hope I can prevent the information that I did have saved on there from being deleted.

Thankyou to anyone who can assist.

Windows8 Pro laptop wont start and just cycles on and off every few seconds.  Removed battery and AC and held power button for 30 seconds, replace AC and battery with same results.  Never boots long enough to get any screen info. Ideas?

I hope it's kosher to post a link to another post I made in the XP forum (I'm only doing this because someone suggested I do). I dont think I have a virus/malware problem, but maybe someone here will recognize it.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/top...tml#entry844517ThanksUPDATE: I just finished running the a-squared command malware tool and all that it came up with was 19 cookies.

A:Failed To Load Dll, No Start Menu, Programs Wont Start, Etc

Please try using this to repair the broken registry entry that may be causing this.Download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click HERE if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum and have had the below issue for about a week now.
I've been looking for solutions in this forum and online but nothing worked or matched the symptoms.
Symptoms are :
The computer when powered up does not start,
Screen remains black,
Touch sounds buttons mute and raise volume blink in unison,
Lower sound button remain on,
This is for a Dell Studio 1535 I have had for 7 years. Running windows 8 for 4/5 months now.
I have tried : A solution by Krypebud posted here 6 years ago : which was to download the firmware ISO I and reboot the computer. This did not work.
I have also checked that the screen does not work on a second monitor : it does not.
Additionally I have tried the LCD BIST test which works fine, no distortions, colours all seem fine.

Would anyone know needs to be done here ? (apart from buying a new laptop)
Please be simple in your explanations I have very little knowledge of computers, assume I have no idea about anything.
Thanks in advance for your help,

I can't open my Microsoft Outlook - when I start it it states it wasn't shut
down properly and asks if I want to start it in safe mode. If I
select no I get a message "Could not start the RPC server' and then I
get a blank outlook screen. It doesn't work if I select to start in
safe mode either.

Any ideas? As non techie as possible.

A:Solved: Could not start the RPC Server - Outlook wont start

Problem solved - I uninstalled HTC Sync software and Outlook was able to start correctly. I had installed the HTC Sync software the same day Outlook stopped working.
