Wireless connectivity problems: Windows Vista on a Dell vostro 1400

Q: Wireless connectivity problems: Windows Vista on a Dell vostro 1400

Dear Tech Guys,

I'm admittedly not great with computers but I'm trying to learn, so here we go:

I'm having trouble connecting to the wireless network in my new home using Windows Vista on a Dell Vostro 1400. Confounding factors:

1) My roommates are connecting without any problems
2) The computer will connect occasionally, but just as frequently disconnects so I'm using internet through the wireless in frustrating 5 minute intervals and I never know when it will decide to shut off or on again. It is incredibly spotty.

My boyfriend tried to fix it a few days ago and I'm not sure what he did or if it affected anything, but for the past few days the wireless hasn't connected at all, even for a few minutes like it was before.

3) The network sharing center shows me as being connected and getting great signal but it's clearly not. I tried all of the options it has given me---resetting network adapters, restarting the computer on multiple occasions, but it still gives the same feedback that "there is still a problem" basically.

I tried walking through some of this:
http://forums.techguy.org/networking/902843-solved-stuck-acquiring-network-address.html
and from what I can tell, everything LOOKS fine. In the past I have connected to other wireless networks without issue, though things on my computer may have changed since then...but I doubt it.
I'm not sure what to do, I have scoured the internet but to no avail. Can anyone help me? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Sarah

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We need to have information please.

- Make and Exact model of Router, Modem or router/modem combination
- can you connect using a cable rather than wireless to the router - just to see if that works OK
- The other machines working without any issues - correct
- Do you have a Firewall - if so it may be blocking access - what firewall / security program do you have ?
- If using wireless, do you have Encryption - if so, Remove any wireless encryption from the router, and try to connect - post back results
- Most laptops have a wireless switch - some a physical switch other use a combination of the FN key + one of the F key to toggle on/off - make sure this is on

Please post back the results from below - you may need to copy into notepad and save on your PC and then copy to a working PC to post here

{Device Manager}
Post back the results in device manager
Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} >
windows 7
start > control panel> System and Security> Device Manager

network adaptors, click on the + > post back the devices listed there
are there any ! ? or X
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and
control key + V to paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
{Ping Tests}

Download and install
http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php

Then run the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Small annoyance -

As the title says, I have Dell Vostro 1400 w/Vista Business. Using just the laptop monitor. I set the video resolution (as it was when it arrived) at 1200 x 800. Now, it changes to 1024 x 800 when the computer is put to sleep and the awakes. I can set it back to 1200 x 800 and it works fine. Anyone have any ideas? It is small so it drives me a little nuts.

Hi,

I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro on my Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. Everything works fine except I can't hear any audio from my speakers. When I plug in the earphones then audio works fine.
I previously had Windows 8.1 and the speakers worked flawlessly there. Now when I tried to install the http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=NN9X1&fileId=3327213123&osCode=WW1&productCode=vostro-1400&languageCode=EN&categoryId=AU it threw an " Error: ExitError:Error=Device Object not present ". I tried uninstalling the current drivers, then reinstalling them but that didnt work. I think if I could get the Sigmatel audio drivers installed then my audio would be back but I wasn't able to fix this error.
If anyone has any ideas how to fix this I would really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Tim

A:No Audio Dell Vostro 1400 - Windows 10.

Sorry for late reply -- must have overlooked your post.
MrAudioProblemtried to install the http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=NN9X1&fileId=3327213123&osCode=WW1&productCode=vostro-1400&languageCode=EN&categoryId=AU
That's an XP driver. Win10 is supposed to work with Win7 and 8.1 drivers, so Win10 might not be a good fit with the Vostro 1400. Try the Vista version, Sigmatel R171786. Download the driver package and extract the files (unzip or unpack and make a note of the name of the folder that is created) but cancel the installation process. Go to the folder on the hard drive to which you unpacked the driver files which should bec:\Dell\Drivers\R171786
Find the setup.exe file and right click on it. Select the Properties. Find the compatibility tab and select Vista.
If still no luck then I would advise you to revert to Win8.1.

Hi,
Can you tell me that which Os is more stable on Vostro 1400 notebook.

A:Which one is best OS for Dell vostro 1400 ???

This usually ships with Vista basic - which is as much use as a chocolate teapot. You can upgrade to vista premium or bite the downgrade bullet and take it to an OS XP Home or PRo that is established with at least 3 service packs. You don't include any specs - so answers may be vague as a result. Give us PC info. and we may be ale to help.

I have a Vostro 1400 which runs with Vista Business.

It has stopped working properly all of a sudden. It starts up ok, I enter my password ok and it goes onto my desktop ok. But when I click on anything, whether it be an icon or the Start menu, it just freezes.

It's working fine in Safe mode. I've tried System Restore and CCleaner.

I have a feeling it might be when I tried to plug in a camera into the USB when it was shutting down (I didn't know it was shutting down). It might not be that, but that's when it started.

Help anyone???

Hello guys & girls,

I'm unable to get the in-built bluetooth function working on Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. I have perused Dell forums to no avail. I have downloaded the machines bluetooth driver & have located a couple of patches via said forum but all to no avail.

I've uninstalled & re-installed the Widdcomm software too even via a direct route by drilling down to the folders in the OS in my case it's C:\dell\drivers\R140135\3100_216\Win32 & have even tried utulising the laptop's drivers cd to load bluetooth from that. Again no luck.

Anyway thanks for looking in & if there are some Dell engineers taking a look here then I appreciate any help you may have also.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I'm in the process of replacing the screen on my old Dell Vostro 1400. However, as I would like to buy it used (for obvious reasons) it's hard to find the exact part number I want at the right price so I was wondering which part numbers would be a good replacement the part number on my current screen is LTN141W1-L09 (Dell Part Number: 0DM110). Firstly, I was wondering what the part after the hyphen meant in the model Number. Also, can I replace this screen with one with a lower resolution or different aspect ratio?

I've also noticed that latitude D600 series shares a lot of hardware with the Vostro 1400 would any screen from there be compatible?

Thanks for reading

A:Replacing Screen On Dell Vostro 1400

I would think that when you replace a screen it should be the exact same one as the original. you might find what you need on ebay as im sure someone might be selling one for parts or repair only.ive never replaced screens yet in my laptops because by the time they have gone bad it was more to fix it than the computer was worth.you might also check with a computer repair place they might have what you are looking for or tell you where to find the correct screen for that model.

I disabled popup and popdown, disabled c4, tried HLT.. no luck anywhere. Whine is not just in Windows, as soon as cpu starts the Whine starts. Thoughts?

I've been working on attempting to fix my girlfriends Dell Vostro 1400 notebook and I've been running into too many brick walls.

First off, the computers specs:
Core 2 Duo T5470 (1.6Ghz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
1GB DDR2 667Mhz
128MB Nvidia Geforce 8400GS
120GB 5400RPM SATA
Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
8x CD/DVD Burner w/ double layer DVD+ write capability
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

When I got the laptop from her I booted it up and there was no video, just a blank screen. It indicates HDD activity but nothing displayed. I then tested out the PSA boot method through the beep sequences. It came up with an optical drive error, which I can really doubt. I've unmounted the optical drive and thoroughly inspected it, but I couldn't imagine it being the problem here.

I then hooked it up through my PC external monitor, and got some video out of it. It goes through the boot start up and then hangs for a good 3-5 minutes before displaying an error message that reads:

***Hardware Malfunction
Call Your Hardware Vendor For Support
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error
***The System Has Halted***

I reboot and attempt to enter any of the start up options but none seem to be operational. It takes about 5 minutes to enter BIOS setup and as soon as it loads it just display nonsensical coding. The same goes for the other boot options, though some are slightly different in appearances. I've attempted a full power drain on the laptop which didn&#... Read more

My 4 year old Dell vostro 1400, a carryover from my son's college days, has stopped reading and writing DVDs, though it reads and writes the CDs perfectly.

I replaced the DVD drive with a new Optiarc internal DVD writer. This new Optiarc has worked for about six months and then again same problem not reading and writing DVDs only.

Is the problem with the DVD writer or with the laptop? I am apprehensive to replace the DVD writer again.

By the way the OS is Windows XP professional.

A:Dell Vostro 1400 laptop internal DVD writer not reading/writing DVDs..

Normally it can be attributed to the laser burning out. The drive uses a different wavelength to do CDs than DVDs. They often don't burn out like a light bulb but just can't do the higher wavelengths.

Optical drives are notorious for sudden failure. On a desktop it's no big deal - a $20 repair. But a laptop is expensive to do replacements on. I'd be bumming too.

Curious (dealing with a similar issue with a laptop here):
When you go into Device Manager and check the properties of that Optiarc drive, is the name 'garbled'?

Try installing the Sigmatel HD audio driver. There is not one for Windows 7 so you must use the Vista version and install using Vista compatibility mode.
Download the driver package using the browser, not Dell Download Manager. Extract the files (unzip or unpack) but cancel the installation process. Go to the hard drive to c:\Dell\Drivers\R171786   (This is the folder that is created when you unpack the download. It contains the driver files.)Right click on setup.exe and select Properties. Most likely it's a video card problem, although it could be the cable to your monitor or the monitor itself.
Check to be sure that the fans are working and that there's not dirt/dust stuck inside (use canned air to blow it out - DO NOT use a vacuum or an air compressor, it'll cause damage)

My old Vostro 1400 display goes black shortly after startup.  External monitor works fine, and the image is visible on the screen if I shine a bright light on it.  So, I conclude that either the lamp driver or the bulb is bad, am going to try repairing but don't know where to get these parts.  Options for my computers tag don't show these parts.

A:Vostro 1400 Display Failure

You'd have to try EBay - - or replace both the screen and the inverter together, which is likely the best option.
There was once a time when replacing the bulb or inverter made economic sense because of the cost of LCD panels -- it no longer does.  You can easily replace the screen and inverter for well under $100.

I'm having a hugely frustrating problem regarding my wireless internet on my vista laptop. It is connected to the internet via a wireless connection on an XP desktop.

The internet connection on the laptop regularly switches to limited connectivity and I am unable to browse any websites at all. The only way I have found to rectify this is to unplug the wireless and plug it back in. The internet then works perfectly for a while, but limited connectivity soon shows up again.

I have tried countless ways to stop this and looked on just about every troubleshooting site on the internet with no luck. Disabling IPV6 does not work, there is a problem with IPV4 too. Automatic Ip addresses do not work, fixed IP adresses do not work, resetting the wireless adaptor in the laptop does not work and neither does any way of trying to reconnect.

My ipconfig follows from my laptop. This was taken at a time when the internet is working so if you need one when it's limited just ask me and I'll be sure to post it when it goes down again.

A:Vostro 1400 with Win 7 64 bit video driver needed

When you say you "upgraded" your Vostro 1400, what upgrade did you perform?  If you replaced the GPU (assuming it's removable in that system) or replaced the motherboard with a version that has a different GPU built in (assuming that system was available with more than one GPU configuration), you'd need to download and install the correct drivers for your new hardware. You can find them at support.dell.com, although I would manually select your system model rather than entering your Service Tag.

1. It seems like the fan is always on. What driver controls this? (so that I can get the appropriate driver or is it the BIOS that controls the fan?)

2. Also, the hard drive accesses some data for a split second every 10 seconds or so. It does this all the time even when idle or on the logon screen. Any idea why this happens?

I've search forums for solutions to this, but haven't found one that fixed this exactly, for me.
I bought a Toshiba laptop with Vista a month ago. I used it on the open wireless network at my workplace and at other locations for several weeks.
When I tried to use it Monday, it claimed it was connected to the correct network, but i could not pull up any pages with Firefox or IE. It has been that way all week, both at work and at wireless hotspots at coffee shops.
I did not install or uninstall or make any changes to any programs over the weekend, to my knowledge.
I have tried:
disabling UAC
disabling windows firewall
disabling TCP/IPv6
un/reinstalling the wireless adapter
...maybe another thing or two.
*Also*, other programs that require an internet connection work fine, just not web browsers.
This problem is driving me crazy. I have DSL but not wireless at home, so I can't try to fix the wireless somewhere where i have a connection.
Please help.

family member's brand new Vostro connects to other wireless networks (in other locations), but when she is at home, the Vostro is connecting to a brand new Wireless Netgear N router... it will connect, but either go really slow, or connect and then disconnect in 5 minutes, or it will say its connected but not really be. Repowered the router and modem (even though the internet is working fine for everyone else on all their computers and devices). Also disabled and re-enabled the wireless adapter. Made the network a home network. I don't know what else to do. She is on Windows 7 btw.

I've had nothing but trouble will Dell internal wireless cards, not working for any rhyme or reason. Then they might work perfectly a year later for no reason.

Hopefully I can actually get some possible fixes.

A:Dell Vostro Internal Wireless

If signal strength is full and you're relatively close to the router, then unfortunately this is a quirk noted by others with the Vostro. One possibility is a wireless phone system or other digital interference i.e. cell phones. If power shows fair to weak, then a signal booster works.

I put in a new desktop with Win 7 a week ago. I upgraded the wireless adapter at the same time. It was working fine until the next day after an auto win update of 30 items. Ethernet works fine and a MAC and Vista laptops still connect fine. I have talked to adapter support and the internet service provider (AT&T Uverse) who provide the router. Uverse actually sent me a new adapter which was gtd to work with Win 7 by only loading Win driver. Same problem. It appears to all that WAP is fine and adapters work. The adapter sees network but it will not "connect successfully" and shows "limited access" which in reality there is none at all. Do I need to uninstall all the updates and reinstall one by one to find the problem?

Hi fishy1,

Have you tried a System Restore? Restore it to a point where you were able to connect and worry free.

Hey everyone,

I have literally no idea what is causing the problems, but whenever I boot up, aero and my wireless connection keep crashing for the first 10-15 minutes or so.
After boot up and the desktop comes into view I can see the small white bars icon on the taskbar that indicates that I'm connected to the net, and that windows 7 aero is on (glass effect etc), but around 10 seconds afterwards the theme reverts to windows 7 basic and my wireless icon has a red cross on it.
Right clicking the wireless icon and diagnosing the problem brings up 'windows wireless service is not running on this computer' and that the diagnosis has solved the problem. After another few seconds it disconnects again, and I have to repeat the diagnosis several times to get it to 'stick'. Aero eventually returns to normal on its own after around 15 minutes.
It's very intermittent but persistent; I thought the problem had gone after 2 days of it not happening, but today it came back

I'm using

Windows 7 64-bit
D-Link DWA-556 Xtreme PCIe 802.11n Wifi adapter
I7 860
Western Digital caviar 400GB
2GB VData DDR3-1333Mhz
Asrock H55M Motherboard
Nvidia GT220 1GB

Any help much appreciated!

Hi

Welcome to Seven Forums
Are you running the wireless adapter under compatibility mode?
As per the attachment - the adapter appears to be limited to 32-bit platforms while you are running x64.
Try the following tutorial to install the drivers from the CD

Our household just installed a new, Netgear, router. The wireless network works for all devices except for my laptop, which runs Windows Vista. The network, for me, is listed as "Unidentified" and the connection switches between Local Only and Limited Connectivity. If I plug the router directly into the laptop, then internet works perfectly. How can I connect to the wireless router?

Hi! I just purchased a Gateway MT3707 laptop a few days ago. When I first started using my D-Link DI-624 router to connect wirelessly, it worked great! Sometimes, I also use the hard-wired ethernet cable that is connected to the DI-624 when downloading music, but just yesterday my wireless connection stopped working, because everytime I turn my laptop on it wouldnt connect automatically to my home network anymore, instead it would just say LIMITED CONNECTIVITY. My internet only works when the ethernet cable is plugged in to the laptop. I have searched this topic online and I have found several issues which are similar to mine. I just want to know what to do to be able to go wireless again. Is this a problem with the router's incompatability with Windows Vista Home Premium (which is the OS I have), or is it a problem with my laptop's wireless adapter?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

This is a new computer all updates have been downloaded. Its an ASUS N10J running Vista Home Premium sp2.
The Printer is an Epson Stylus Photo 1400 driver version 6.10
The cables are fine the printer works fine on my Macbook Pro and it worked fine on my Sony Vaio prior to it getting stolen.

When I go to print the carriage moves around like its about to start printing, but then it stops, the print manager pops up and the blue bar fills up like its printing but nothing is happening on the printer. then the carriage moves around a couple more times and its done. nothing printed... no error messages. the print log is empty.

Printing a test page little box pops up and says it is sent to printer but the carriage does the same thing i just described before... any ideas?

I sent this to Epson support and ASUS support forum too so far nobody knows. Seeing how it works fine on the Mac and worked fine on the Sony I'm thinking it's gotta be something with the vista settings. I have looked through all the printer settings I could find in preferences and Advanced. I'm stumped. It's running on the USB virtual printer port. thats the only one that the printer responds at all to.

How long should it take to install SP2 on a Dell Vostro 1510? I have attempted a clean install of Vista SP1 and cant get wireless drivers or updates to install. I shut it down and and its started installing an update (SP2 is the only one I tried to download) Its been "installing" at least an hour now. 15 meg cable internet. I get the feeling the install is failing.
This morning it BSODed once when I googled wireless drivers. Then the install wizard froze trying to install the driver. Error code 40.
I am ready say screw it and put XP on this thing.

Hi, I have a Dell Vostro 400 with Win XP Home on it and I should upgrade out of it but I want to keep all my programs and settings. I have the Dell Reinstallation DVD for Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I'm under the impression that that is an upgrade path. Once I get there, can I upgrade to Win 7 Pro 32 bit and still keep my programs?

I'm trying to follow instructions at Windows Reinstallation Guide and Related Software Guides

A:Dell Vostro 400 - Upgrade XP to Vista then Win 7

According to Microsoft, you can upgrade from XP to Vista and keep your files and programs.

Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista

Ditto for upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.

Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows

Personally, I would do a clean install of Windows 7, bypassing Vista completely. Your computer will run better and there will be no leftover junk from XP to cause problems later on. Just backup your data first.

The guide you are following is overkill to the max, way to much information and steps.

No matter what you do, please backup your data first. Even better would be to make an image backup to an external hard drive so if anything goes wrong you have a easy way to recover.

Is the copy of Windows 7 a upgrade or full version?

For Upgrade: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

For a Full version: Clean Install Windows 7

If you have an HP desktop running on windows vista that has a wireless adapter that is giving you limited connectivity, or local signal only, then I have the solution for you. Simply restore your computer to a time before you updated it to Service Package 2. You can also restore it to the way it came. Either way you have to make sure you do not update it to Service Package 2 or you will get the error message again. I am not a computer know-it-all but I simply wrote this so that people do not have to go through the same frustration that I did to fix this problem. Thank you for reading this and good luck.

A:HP desktop running on windows vista wireless adapter limited connectivity solution

Telling Windows Vista users to revert from SP2 back to SP1 is very bad advice.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/smallbus...pcoming-end-of-support-windows-vista-sp1.aspx

If you're having problems with a wireless adapter, there are ways to deal with it.

Since your computer is a desktop, I have to assume that you installed a wireless add-on card or are using a USB wireless adapter.

I got my girlfriend a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop for christmas and it has been having some problems. It has 2 gigs of ram (came with one, but I upgraded to two gigs I bought on Crucial.com) and runs on an AMD Sempron 3600+.

The two main problems involve the computer crashing.

1. Sometime at start-up, it seems to start fine and then will go into a blue screen with some white horizontal lines and restart on it's own.

2. Lately, the computer screen will go black but computer still seems to be running. The only way to get out of this is to do a hard reboot.

Any thoughts on what this might be? Is it a Vista problem or a hardware problem.

Let me know what you think.

I have a Dell Vostro with Vista basic and I would like to restore it to when it was made but I do not have a disc. Am I able to do this via the recovery partition on the D drive? If so I have been unable to locate specifics for this machine. I have tried a few options such as f8 but there is no option for repair. I have tried ctrl with f11 upon reboot but that does not work either.

Thank you for your time.

Hi,

I've bought a Dell Vostro 1400 a few months ago. Once I got it, first thing I did was format Vista and install XP.

Now I want Vista back, but no "Operating System" CD came with my laptop. I only have a partition that's called "RECOVERY" that came with my laptop, but I have no idea how to use that. Even the laptop's manual doesn't tell me how to do it.

Any ideas?
