Unable to install either Microsoft Word or Word Perfect

Q: Unable to install either Microsoft Word or Word Perfect

After recent full system recovery caused by one or more virus, I am unable to re-install Microsoft Word or Word Perfect on my Compaq Presario, which has Windows XP. Microsoft Word will sometimes start the process but then just stops, giving no indication of what steps to take next or what the problem is. Word Perfect seems to start the process each time but then gets hung up with updating what it describes as the SHFolder.dll. Have waited as long as 20 minutes for this update. The screen does show activity but it just never seems to get done. I cannot take the installation process past that point.

Any suggestions on how I can correct or cure this problem?

Preferred Solution: Unable to install either Microsoft Word or Word Perfect

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Unable to install either Microsoft Word or Word Perfect

Check here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q303437/ for some help - probably the .dll is either corrupt or the path not recognized. Depending on whether or not this page helps, either fix it with that or lookup SHFolder.dll. on the net and download a new copy from somewhere like http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?shfolder and install it.

Well i did a big report on my computer with Word Perfect i couldnt print it so i took to school on my flash drive. IN my first class i edited it on Word 2007 and in the class i could print it they had Word 2003 and i couldnt open my file and now i cant even open it in word perfect. I doubt i can use the laptops for a while anyway i can open this on wordperfect

A:Solved: Word Perfect- Word 2003 - word 2007

If you saved the file in the "new" Word 2007 format (with a file extension of .docx) then you will be unable to open it in the other applications.

For Word 2003 you can install a converter, but I know of no XLM converter for WordPerfect.

When using Word 2007 you need to "save as" Word 97-2003 format to retain backwards compatibility.

Hello, I am a consultant in central Texas and I have a customer that does not recall the chronology of how he got into this situation but basically, I'll attempt to explain. He has Word 2000 installed on an XP Pro machine. He wants to do a mailing that 2000 is unable to handle. We found that 97 will do the desired process with no problem. I tried to install Word 97 to his computer but the setup program indicates that 97 is already on the machine. There is no trace of Word 97 that I can find. The customer thinks that he has vacillated between 97 and 2000 at least twice. I just want both on this machine at the same time. I could uninstall both and then reinstall 2000 then 97 and I think it will work but I was hoping to avoid the uninstalls. Any ideas?

A:Unable to install Word 97 on Word 2000 machine

It sounds like Uncle Bill left some fragments in the registry (or, hopefully, just a file used to flag Word'97's presence).

Hopefully you are using "My Documents" to save everything created in MSWord (either version); that will make it pretty easy to back up the files you don't want to take chances on. Burn a couple CDs or DVDs as needed/if available.

Check the Add/Delete Programs- to see which version/s are installed. I would uninstall each one- re-starting the computer between uninstalls.

With operating systems it makes a difference in which order they are installed; I would follow the same rule for the same reasons--- install the older one first (Word 97). Paranoia makes me want to shut down & reboot between versions. Then install Word 2000.

Good luck.

I am setting up a new computer with Windows 7 (from XP). I transferred some Word Perfect files to new computer prior to installing the Word Perfect 11 software. I changed one document to Word, and all of my WP documents changed. Now since I have WP installed, I would like to be able to open original WP documents in that program. I do not see a way to change the files back to WP. Although the files say "WPD File," they open in Word when I attempt to open them. I have tried to "Save As," but do not see the Word Perfect option. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a folder of documents created on Word perfect X4 that I need to convert to Word 2003. I have Word 2007 but have found that some with older Word versions (before docx) have trouble opening them.

I tried the Word batch conversion utility in the program but the docs came out garbled. This would save me a lot of time.

A:Need to batch convert Word perfect X4 docs to Word 2003

It is not the conversion that is the problem, you need to make sure that Word 2007 is set to Save As "Word 97-2003" documents to be the default.

Downloaded Word Perf X5 trial because version 12 quit working with Windows 7 on the new computer. X5 still crashes sometimes but mostly it runs well enough. Mostly I think it is the cool new computer with more processors and lots of memory that helps keep it working better than V12.

It says I need a serial number to keep using it.

So, I bought it and tried to use the long, complicated number but it doesn't work. Should I uninstall the trial copy and reinstall from the CD?

What good is this stuff if we can't install it? Otherwise it is good enough. I use Quattro more than WP, and whenever I have to use EXCEL, I wish it would be more like Quattro.

And the Corel site sort of says if you don't like how our cool stuff runs, go pound sand, don't bother us about it. Especially don?t call us on the phone.

I recently had a really discouraging problem, where a ton of very special files I'd spent weeks working on, refused to open in either word perfect 8 (in which they'd been created) or ms word from office xp suite. I would either get a message in word perfect about an "unsupported format," or it would try to suggest i open them in ms word 97, and then fail. In word, the doc would open, but be in total gibberish. I tried opening them on different machines, different os's, everything.

I have since been able to recover the original docs from my laptop and I'm ok, but it was scary, to be honest. All that work...anyway, I am wondering what happened, and how to avoid it in the future.

I believe that what may have happened, is that I opened some of the files in both word perfect 8 and ms word, and that somehow this corrupted them. (I don't remember my reason for doing this, but I know I had one at the time.)Are there some guidelines/warnings/issues I should know about in terms of opening docs in multiple applications? Or on different machines (my school computer, home computer, laptop, etc.)?

Also...are there any special conditions that will cause corruption like this to occur, that I should know about?

Is Vista causing this problem? How can I fix Word Perfect?

One of the features I really liked in the DOS version of WordPerfect 5.1 was the ability, when highlighting, to simply type a character or string of chars. near the end of the relevant portion to be highlighted and have the program take the highlight directly there.

Can WORD 2000 do this? So far, all I can figure out is how to highlight either an entire word, sentence, or line, but none of them with the precision that WordPerfect 5.1 allowed.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

alright my problem is that i have already used microsoft word 2000 for awhile now and its been fine, no problems whatsoever then about week ago it started doing a lot of crazy stuff when i opened it. this happens every single time. i open it and it states that
it is preparing to install microsoft word 2000 (i already have it installed) then it states that it must gather the required information. At first i thought it was an update so i decided to let it continue. when it was finished it said that "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not availible. please insert the microsoft word 2000 disk and hit ok" alright the thing was it wasn't an update. and i couldn't find my word CD because it hasn't asked for one ever since i installed it. I then hit cancel and everything went away and about a minute later my microsoft word 2000 came up and it had no updates and was functioning fine but it was going about half the speed it usually does. Other than that there were no other problems and i continued with my work. The only thing that really bugs me is that this entire process takes about 5 minutes every time I start up... so its kinda of a pain... is there any way to get rid of this? thx to all... Peace Out

I've got a diskette that I put some info on over three or four years ago, that I need to open. Unfortunately, I used Word Perfect at the time, (can't remember which version, probably old at the time), and I desperately need to open it, but MS Word 2002 doesn't seem to be able to do it. At the time on the computer I had then, whatever version of MS Word I had, to the best of my memory, would open it with no problem. I think Word 2002 has a converter, but I it doesn't work or at least I can't get it to. I thought it was automatic, for that matter.

Now all I get when I open it is mostly a bunch of Y's and O's. Since I don't have Word Perfect anymore, does anyone have any idea how I can get it to open?

I'm not sure if anyone has posted anything like this because I'm not quite sure what you would call this problem I have. I have 217 pages of stuff saved in a document in Microsoft Word Perfect because it's such a big file. One day I opened Word Pad just because I was cleaning out my files looking for a certain document and I opened up this 217 page file. When I opened it in Word Pad, it came up as a bunch of symbols and weird dots with apostrophes and percent signs etc. So, when I went to close it I accidentally pushed save because it's right next to the close button. When I went to open the document in Word Perfect, it was no longer in english, it was in symbols and dots etc. Naturally, everyone I asked about the problem thought it was the font that was changed. Which, it wasn't. I was trying to read through my computer help support and it said a lot of stuff about it being coded and what not, which is fine and great and all, but I don't know how in the heck I change it back. I've even tried calling the Word Perfect help and support and they said they weren't sure. I was hoping someone could please help me and tell me what to do.

A:word pad/word perfect issues

Not good news I fear.

Wordpad would have "interpreted" the WP document code to something displayable (gibberish characters) and then saving it has overwritten this "interpretation" back over the actual document code.

I know of no way to recover the original, it's been replaced with non-meaningful characters as far as WP is concerned.

Do we assume you make no backups of any important documents? if so its a sad reminder of the need to do so.
It would be no different if your hard drive failed (which is another all too common event), it would be lost just the same.

I want to send my resume to an employer as an attachment in an e-mail, but they will only accept resumes in one particular format. Quoting from the prospective employers website: "Applications will be accepted in MS Word 97, otherwise known as Word 7 format". I don't own WORD, and don't have the cash to go out an buy it. However, Word Perfect 10 was installed on my computer by the manufacturer. I rarely use Word Perfect as most if not all employers want resume's in WORD format. I noticed while playing around with Word Perfect that you supposedly can save a new document in any number of formats. Two of the options listed in a drop down list are: "MS WORD 6.0/7.0 for Windows" and "MS WORD 97/2000/2002 for Windows". Does Word Perfect do a good job converting files for WORD? Which drop down option should I choose in Word Perfect so that it will be formatted for Word 97/WORD 7? I'm confused because it looks like either of the Word Perfect WORD options would work, but I don't want to have my resume passed over because of incorrect formatting. Thanks for any help, experiences!

I'm assuming you're talking about the new office 2007? meaning word 2007?

If that is the case, then yes it does run older versions of word. In the sense that if you have a word document that was made and saved in Word 2003 it would work in 2007.

Just like when you make something in word 2007 you are able to save it as a Word 03-07 document so it works on both versions of Microsoft Word.

I have created in Microsoft Word 2003 on an XP OS some lengthy documents. I created them using a view setting of 150%.

I sent them to my employer, who is using Windows 98 and Microsoft Word 97. My boss opened them with his system and they displayed on the screen at a view of 200%. He wants me to send him Word documents that he can open from the CD-R that I send that will automatically display at 100% view on the screen so that he does not have to set the view for each document as it displays.

So what is the answer.

Is there a way that I can save my created documents so that when my boss gets them on a CD-R that they will open on his system at a view setting of 100%.

Is there also a way that his system can be set to default to 100% in reading from the CD-R.

My boss does not want to copy the documents to the system hard disk from my sent CD-R, preferring to read and copy directly from the CD-R that I send, so that the original documents will not accidentally be changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thought it would be interesting to create a thread like this. As a writer, I use both MS Word and Word Perfect. Assessing the level of Word Processing choices out there is larger than many people realize. I still use Word 97 because I am a home user and it's too expensive for me to update. However, I also have Word Perfect 12 and like many of its features as well.

I have more experience with MS Word than with Word Perfect. I have not used the other alternatives such as Open Office, www.openoffice.org or the retail version Star Office. My comments will cover only +'s and -'s of MS Word and Corel Word Perfect:

MS WORD+'s: The industry standard used by businesses and home users Many integrateable features to create and refine any type of writing.

MS WORD -'s: Way too overpriced for what you get, especially if you are only a home user. Newer versions are often bloated. They slow up system resources. They also contain other programs that home users are not likely to use.

WORD PERFECT+'s: Seems to be less of a resource hog. Avoids the annoying wizards for simple tasks. Formatting seems to be MORE OF WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, NOT WHAT THE PROGRAM THINKS YOU WANT TO HAVE DONE. Better security because it's not as well know as Word and is less prone to viruses and malware. Less expensive than Word. I love Word Perfect's "Make it Fit" feature!

WORD PERFECT -'s: Not supported like it used to be for schools and businesses who ... Read more

Hi, all. Just a quick question with, hopefully, a quick YES for an answer from one of you!

I have a couple of die-hards (friends.....) that I work with who like Word, (and as the office grows, WORD format is much more acceptable and they've just transitioned) but hate the fact that it has never had a "reveal codes" command as does Word Perfect. I keep telling them that in Word 2003 Pro, there MUST be! "Help" has been useless in this instance.

Anyone? I'd really like to lay Word Perfect to rest in my office.

A:WORD v. Word Perfect

As far as I know the closest it gets is "reveal formatting" which is still (apparently) far short of WP reveal codes. I have not tried Word 2003.

There is a technical reason though, Word uses "Styles" for formatting where WP uses embedded codes. Its a different philosophy and makes direct comparison hard.

WP is/was a very good word processor package, its just that the rest of the world uses Word, and not to do so causes compatability issues. Its certainly not a case of Word being better. Just different.

I changed from Verizon to Comcast yesterday 06/16/2017. Today when I tried to open a Word Document it would not open. A box showed the following " Microsoft Word Starter 2010 cannot be opened, try again or repair the product in Control Panel" I don't know if this is just a coincidence or if it had something to do with changeover? I tried System Restoration without success and am at a standstill. I tried calling Comcast but they were not able to help me. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I presently have Microsoft 7 32gb.

I'm a former IT Systems Technician, and my girlfriend is a work-from-home writer. I've recently migrated her PC's original processor and ram from an HP motherboard to an ASRock board, linking the original WD Caviar Blue 1TB drive to the board as a secondary drive to collect documents and storage from, while running Windows 8.1 (up to date) on a Seagate Barracuda 250GB for the main OS and programs drive.

With those specs out there in the open, now it's time to get to the root of the problem.

As a work-from-home writer, my girlfriend depends on the ability to save her documents to Microsoft's OneDrive and upload them to her publisher, but with this error showing up, she cannot get them to save. I have never seen such a message in my many years of IT service, and I'm completely baffled.

I am the administrator... So now I turn to you guys for help.

A:Microsoft Office Word 2013 unable to save?

Do have have more than 1 version of Office installed on the machine? The error message seems to be indicating that there are 2 or more MS Office products installed that are in conflict with each other.

Hard to explain but here goes:

When I have a sentence that I want to move to the middle of the page, I place the curser to the left of the word and try to push it right by hitting the space bar and nothing happens.

This is only when the word is all the way to the left of the page.

Is there some type of formatting that would allow this to be free so that I can push words forward??

A:Microsoft WORD - Can't get word on left side to space right
