Slow/lagging computer when using external monitor on my X1 Extreme

Q: Slow/lagging computer when using external monitor on my X1 Extreme

Whenever I connect external monitor or TV via HDMI the computer is slow/lagging (even moving windows or doing a right click is slow).I tried to isolate the problem and it seems to happen only when I use "Second screen only" or when the laptop lid is closes, if the lid is open and I use "Extend" or "Duplicate" everything's fine. Also, if I do reset while the monitor is still connected, it's working ok (but this is not a good solution for me as I want to keep the work evniornment).I tried playing with Display settings but nothing seems to help, maybe the community can please help me?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Wondering if anyone has come across this problem before. I have a brand-new X1 Extreme (bought in March) and a 4-year-old Dell 27" 4K monitor. In the last few days, I've had really low fps when using the monitor, while the built-in display works fine. This is all at the Windows desktop, ie not games or anything that should be super-demanding. Some more details:Laptop is running Windows 10 Pro 1903, fully updated, and there are no problems in Device ManagerThe resolution is 4K, 60Hz refresh rate, connected to a Thunderbolt port via a DisplayPort-USBC cableI had the same problem when I tried connecting with HDMI (which only gets me a nominal 30Hz refresh rate because the monitor only supports an older HDMI spec, but the actual fps I get is way less than that ? maybe 10-15fps)Switching between TBolt ports doesn't helpSwitching to a different monitor also doesn't help, suggesting the problem is with Windows and/or the laptopInterestingly, if I duplicate the display on both laptop and monitor, then the problem goes away. It comes back when I set Windows to display on only the monitor. The monitor was mostly working fine before this. I say mostly, because it's had problems for years relating to waking up from sleep; I'll often have to unplug it from the wall and plug it back in again for Windows to see it. But once it was running, it was okay.

Hello, I have purchased Lenovo Yoga 920 with USB-C docking station and connected two external monitors (1 via DP, and 1 via VGA) to the docking station. I have disabled notebook's screen and I use only monitors, however it is impossible to use the Yoga Notebook in this mode, because my mouse cursor freezes every 5 seconds. I am unable to perform any productive tasks while using external monitors, which is very frustrating. I tried looking at the forum and have found that maybe disabling Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework (DPTF) might solve my issues, however when I boot into the BIOS I don't see any Intel DPTF option available under configuration window. Does anyone encountered similar issues? What could be a fix to my solution? Thanks a lot for help and suggestions.

Is there a special settings I **bleep** missing somewhere?  Please advise.

Dear all, I'm new to this forum and would appreciate your advice on the following. I've always had ThinkPads. I recently got a Macbook Pro 15" 2017 for work and it's super smooth in daily operation when  connected to an external 4k monitor. I'm keen to replicate the smoothness as I hate the visual lag of the cursor etc. in my older T460s when connecting it to the 4k monitor. I like the X1 Extreme because it has longer battery life than the P1. However, I'm concerned that the X1 Extreme's graphics card won't be up to the job of a smooth display on a 4k external monitor. Am I right in saying that the X1 Extreme's GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is NOT up to the job of running on a 4k external monitor smoothly in everyday operation? If yes, will it be solved by the GTX 1650 Max-Q that's in the X1 Extreme Gen 2?If I'm wrong and the graphics cards above are actually fine, please help me understand what I need to make sure I order so that the laptop runs on a 4k external monitor smoothly. I cannot stand the lag in ordinary operation.BestNamir

A:Your advice: X1 Extreme vs P1, external 4k monitor etc.

I should have added:The 4k monitor that I will be connecting my new Thinkpad to is the BenQ PD3200U.

My laptop is a Compaq Presario F504EA. I have had an external 19" LCD Monitor running sometimes in parallel and sometimes independantly with the laptop. It has its own Power supply, and is only connected to the laptop through a VGA cable.

I was wondering if this could cause the laptop to extremely overheat. With this, the laptop would be un touchable on the bottom side due to extreme heat.

I had also recently upgraded my ram from 1 to 2GB. Would this of had an effect on the heat aswell ?

It is currently in repair due to my keyboard being intermittent along with my wireless; i believe the heat as melted joints or something on the motherboard.

A:External Monitor, extreme heat issue

when was the last time you spray dusted the laptop, that should help the heat issue. but adding more ram should not cause any more than normal heat, the extra monitor might cause more heat cause of the extra power going through the video card, but it should not make it untouchable.

i would try to spray dust the vents and also check to make sure all the fans are working.

I have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme (20MF000CUS) connected to two external 4K monitors via Lenovo Thunderbolt Workstation Dock (40AN0230US). Windows 10 desktop extends to all 3 displays.Everything works really well except for a major annoyance: normally I have a bunch of apps/windows I leave open on all 3 monitors. Whenever I put the laptop to sleep and I then resume it later on, all app/windows I left open are automatically resized, moved and stacked up on the primary (laptop) display. Is this by design? Anyway to prevent this behaviour?I noticed that the laptop display is handled by the Intel graphic card while the two external displays are handled by the nVidia graphic card. Could this be the reason?

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Hello im having problems making my computer run at normal speed. It has been running slow for awhile now but recently VERY SLOW. It takes forever to boot up and any program I open also takes an eternity. Once the program is running it works fine.
I have scanned the computer w/ norton, malwarebytes anti-malware and spybot.
I removed all the harmful files. Spybot seemed to make it run slower.
In the task manager the CPU usage is at 100%. There are about 80 processes when I boot up the system.(seems like a lot)
I uninstalled a bunch of programs I never use to free up some more space and I also tried restoring it to an earlier date.
I gave it the newest updates for windows.
I deleted all the programs I dont need from the start up.
Today I tried running Malwarebytes' anti-malware today and it TIMED OUT!! taskmanager said program was unresponsive.
I'm not sure where to go from here. Do I have to wipe my hard drive??? Please help!!! It is a Sony VAIO laptop.

A:My slow lagging computer

<<I removed all the harmful files.>>

That seems to always be a presumption...by those who get infected. Of course, it's not necessarily true but users seem to like to say/believe it.

I guess that I have to ask...was your system infected?

Any error messages during this troubled period?

I'm not sure what's been happening lately, but my laptop has been running kind of laggy and slow. My specs are as follows:

Windows XP SP2
Intel Pentium M
1.12GB RAM
30GB HD (19.1GB Free)
Software: Avast! AV, Comodo Firewall

I initially thought that my computer would only slow after I started Trillian, but I tested this (by not starting Trillian), and it seems it will still slow a few minutes after a restart. Restarting my laptop seems to solve this problem temporarily.

I have run the following programs to test out any problems, but they all come back clean:

Avast virus scan
Spybot S&D
Lavasoft Ad-Aware

Keeping it in safe mode (I'm posting in Safe Mode w/ Networking right now) seems to also keep the problem at bay.

My computer seems to be running slow! So annoying, especially lagging when i'm watching clips or editing. I actually have 1GB of RAM so i'm just wondering if i'm running too many programs because surely that should be sufficient for what i do. I have a fairly new PC, but at times it becomes extremely slow (namely when browsing with firefox and/or using "Xampp" - which never use'd to happen before), it freezes to the limit where everything becomes unaccesible, and I have to litterally unplug the computer.

I'm a web developer theirfore I use "Xampp" which is a local server, it worked fine, but during this period according to the processes, "httpd.exe" which is one of "Xampp"s dependencies has contributed to the slowness as its shown "50-100%" CPU.

I've reason to believe its due to some sort of malware, since the computer is fairly new, and Xampp never use to take up that much CPU until now...

A:Extreme Slow Computer

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and... Read more

I am trying to help out my mother on her computer and considering you guys helped me out on mine, I figured I should come back.

Anyways, the problem with this computer is it has a lot of junk files, folders and things on it, yet I am not sure which files and folders are needed and which are not. Along with that problem, we have the bad lag. Sometimes it takes quite a few minutes to load Windows itself as well as programs.

My mother runs a eBay business and enjoys downloading games and music, so I know that is some cause of the slowing down of her computer.

Attatched is a Hijack This log.

Thank you in advance.

Run tdss killer from http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684
let it cure anything it fnds ( except SPTD.SYS or anything detected as UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic, which should be ignored) & then reboot
post back with its log
By default, the utility outputs the log into system disk (it is usually the disk with installed operating system, C:\) root folder.
Logs have names like: UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.
E.g. C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.7_23.07.2010_15.31.43_log.txt

Just recently the M6300  hhas begun to be stupidly slow  after being on for a few minutes taking several seconds to respond to a key press.
CPU usage shows 100%, considerable TCIP, but no wireless activity.   Scans show no malware.  Computer has (unsupported) win 7 annd that has been no problem for 2 years.
The only clue is that some service called Dell data vault service has been trying to load a driver.  Zonealarm blocked it, and the service was trying to load that driver every 2 seconds.  I don't know what Dell data vault service is, and don't want it.  It may be malware.
The computer is unusable in this condition.
NO, win 7 is NOT the problem it has been trouble-free for 2 years.

Ok, a note that this problem is occurring on both my laptop & my desktop so I know that it's a HUGE problem.
Also against my wishes, my ISP wanted me to test using IE (I NEVER use IE) & for some reason there's no lag on IE, although I only tested it for a second.
I haven't been able to work for 5 days now so I really hope someone can help me quickly & yes I know everyone is busy & it's long weekend.
I normally cam with 3-4 different sites some in HD & some without HD. This is on Chrome, as I have everything set up there & it always ran faster than on Fx.
5 days ago I started to get extreme lag which was so bad I shut down all cam sites except one. Even with only one cam open in HD the lag was so bad I couldn't work.
I then tried to cam on my desktop & same problem.
I tried to cam on Fx on the laptop & while it was slightly better, it wasn't normal plus again just like on the laptop, I had problems even being able to click on radio buttons, checkboxes & moving from tab to tab.
I rebooted my computer 5 times & ran CCleaner & deleted all cache & nothing helped. Even now while typing this everything is moving at a snails pace.
I thought maybe it was the webcam itself b/c about 2 weeks ago it started to show me in a white soft hue, but on Skype it seems to work fine.
Then I thought it was my ISP. I'm in a country where the cable is one company, &... Read more

A:Extreme lag when camming & computer is slow as well

Ok, this is solved. I couldn't wait any longer, but I wanted others to know what the problem was.
It was FLASH. It was corrupt. I had a feeling & mentioned it to him, so he went with that. I had thought it was the latest version's issue, but in the end it was corrupt.
It took the techie ages to get rid of all the left over flash files when he uninstalled it & then when he tried to put it back, it wouldn't go back. It took over 2 hours with me on Skype with him.
And my bad, I keep forgetting to clear the flash cache, so I advise anyone who doesn't know this, to do that. I wish CCleaner could do that so I'd get everything done in one shot.

My computer has been running very slow lately and lagging when i I am watching videos on youtube. I looked at the programs I'm running in task manager and saw that something called svchost.exe has been taking up the most memory (40000 or so) when everyhting else is around 20000. Anyways, I ran a DDS scan and a GMER scan. But while running the GMER scan, I got a BSOD saying that a file "pxpdakod.sys" was the problem. Here is my DDS scan:

Hi guys,

I've recently bought a Dell Inspiron 15 (7548) which has i7-5500U, 16gb RAM, AMD Radeon R7 M265 4GB.

Problem I'm having is that the laptop is laggy and sometimes freezes.

I've noticed the disk usage sits at 100% most of the time.

I've just upgraded it to windows 10 in the hope that windows 8 was causing the issue but it has stayed the same.

Any help with this (as it makes the laptop slower than my 5 year old laptop which I replaced) would be greatly receieved!

First of all I'm blaming it all on ram since this computer only has 256mb. But anyways it used to be a lot faster (by a lot faster I mean it didn't take 10 minutes to boot up and load everything). I would understand it if I installed a lot of things, but the thing is I barely installed anything and even at that, I didn't install any high memory consuming programs, all I have is basically a kodak program, avast and some hp software. So out of the 40gb I still have like 33 free.

I have scanned with every program I thought off and find no adware/virus/trojans etc. But I still feel there's something not right.

Can anyone tell me if this Hijack log has anything strange. On other news the comp doesn't have the dvd rom installed either. It's not installed in the hardware manager and it obviously doesn't show on the "My computer" tab. It was working when the comp. came out the package, so that's another reason i'm suspecting something gone wrong. Tried deleteling the upper and lower filters and still no dvd rom recognition. I'm going to run a Registry cleaning tool... any recommendations on this?.

So anyway:

Below is the HJT Log, could someone please review this. Most of the downloaded programs (O16) on my log are not showing up on my add/remove list. The only program that I still use is Ofoto. If they are not showing up on my add/remove list, then how can I remove these from my computer?

Also, on my add/remove list there is a "BUM" ... I'm not sure what this is and have not seen it on there before. Could someone tell me what this is and if I should remove it?

My computer runs extreme slow and I end up rebooting two/three times an hour. Sometimes there is a lag every few minutes. Most of the time when I reboot my computer I lose my internet connection and need to unplug my cable modem and if that doesn't work, then I reboot again till I get my connection back.

If there is additional information needed, please let me know.

Thank you for your help.

I began experiencing problems with my computer yesterday. It's a custom build from 2011 that has run flawlessly until yesterday. It suddenly became extremely laggy, some programs won't open, some won't close, Windows error messages I've seen before, circular spinning loading icon when trying to do just about anything, etc.

I've completed this process, and didn't find anything. Bitdefender found a few temp files that I deleted, but as far as I can tell from googling were false positives. I tried an Avira scan but after running for 9 hours overnight it was stuck at less than 2% and wasn't moving.

I don't even know where to begin. Any ideas?

A:Extreme lagging, unable to open programs, malware issue?

Hello and welcome:

There are many causes for a "slow" computer -- hardware, software, malware, etc.

You might want to try some of the suggestions here (it is an older tutorial, but most of the suggestions are still valid) or here.

>>I would be very wary of any sort of 3rd-party registry "optimizer" or "tweaker" or "cleaner", especially without providing a bit more data about your system. Such programs often cause more harm than good.

Perhaps if you could please download, run and post both logs (FRST.txt and Addition.txt) from FRST, we could know a bit more in order to better assist you. If you are on 64-bit Win7, you will need the 64-bit version of FRST. You may need to temporarily pause your real-time AV in order for it to run. Be sure to re-enable your AV after running the tool.

Hello,I recently installed software that apparently contains malware. My computer's symptoms include a little slow on startup, after use of more than 30 minutes the computer becomes extremely slow at doing anything (looking at My Computer in Windows Explorer takes 5 minutes), it freezes (especially Firefox and Windows Explorer) and, in one incident, the computer failed to wake up from sleep mode (lights reactivated but screen was "off" [not black, "off"], no response, repeated attempts to wake it up failed). Hi people, So, I really tried to solve this on my own, but currently I'm unable to. I got a new T450s with 128GB SSD (20BW series) on november-2016 and I've never been quite satisfied with its performance when I'm using an external monitor extended. My monitor is a Samsung 22" LED FHD panel that I can use on either RGB or HDMI. This machine has an Intel 5500 graphics card. I received this unit with Windows 7, and it was constantly lagging (even without monitor attached) with all the bloatware that Lenovo packed with it. Well, I've rebuilt the PC from scratch using a fresh Windows 10 media, and at least now when using it standalone, it runs very well. However, the performance when using my external monitor never really improved. Here's what I already did: 1) upgraded all drivers and firmwares to the latest level we have on Lenovo2) Changed the power scheme to High Performance3) Tested generic drivers from Intel4) Monitored my CPU with cpu-z to check if it was being capped - it wasn't.5) Tried using RGB or HDMI - no change6) Disabled the power savings settings on each of the USB and display devices on device manager.7) Increased the video memory on the BIOS to 512mb8) disabled intel AMT on the bios9) tested using mains or the battery10) Disabled the v-sync settings on the intel graphics card (only available when on battery) What I've noticed is that, specially when using chrome with some heavy websites, the laptop tends to lag more. Hi,Background on Issue I've had the Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd gen (product # 20JDCTO1WW; BIOS version N1NET46W 1.33) since it came out. It's running the latest build (non-targeted channel) of Windows 10 Pro with all Windows updates and all Lenovo System updates installed (through Lenovo Vantage app), as of this writing. The laptop has only professional/scientific software installed and it's strictly used in a work setting in a climate-controlled office (i.e. no exposure to extreme heat/cold, humidity, dust, etc.) (scientific/professional software like statistic analysis software, Office, browsing company websites and other non-entertainment professional sites, etc.) and there have been no system registry modifications, no 3rd party driver installation, or anything outside of the normal functioning of the system. Windows has never been re-installed/reset from the factory-shipped condition, and I haven't even accessed the BIOS for the first time since it was purchased. Hello everyone,

I am having some trouble with my Tecra M11 with an external monitor going through a Express Port Replicator II.

It is very specific, but i am running texlive 2010 on my laptop for writing a thesis. Whenever i use my laptop screen the functionality is fine, and it runs very quickly, with no lag when i compile my document. Upon docking it into my docking station at work to use on a large monitor, whenever i use the same program, it slows up a lot, eventually causing the program to crash. Its frustrating to lose lots of your thesis like this! When i connect the external screen straight to the laptop, it works fine again.

Something is going wrong in the docking station. Does anyone know how i can correct this? Im a little confused, and out of ideas. maybe i driver or something im not aware of. Maybe my docking station is defective?

A:Tecra M11-LaTeX runs slow on external monitor using Express Port Replicator

Which port do you use on port replicator? VGA or DVI?

It will not be easy to offer answer to your question. It is not possible to test all available software with docking station and search for solutions.
I would say: bad luck.

In a day I might need to plug and unplug the external monitor (from HDMI port) several times, and after a few times, it seems to struggle with switching between the scaling of external and internal monitors. On Chrome, for example, scrolling sometimes is noticeably lagging, and new pages will flash multiple times as they are loading. Moving Chrome over to the internal monitor (with 250% scaling) and everything seems to work fine. Restarting Chrome doesn't change the issue. A whole reboot is necessary.
I would guess it's a driver issue. I also have light screen flickering, though I only notice it when not using the external monitor.

Hi, I want to use my All-in-one computer only as an external monitor. I connect my laptop (HP ENVY) with an HDMI cable to the Omni 27 and the laptop recognizes it as a monitor but i can't see the image of the extention or duplicity. When I bring the mouse to the right or left the computer act like an external compter is connected. Can I use my useless HP Omni 27 only as an external monitor? David

I just bought an HP Envy 23" All-In-One desktop a few months ago and am just now attempting to pair it with an external monitor (TV) via the HDMI port. The computer doesn't even detect that it's been hooked up to anything and the TV still says "no signal". I tried the same HDMI cable and TV with my laptop and it works fine, so it must be the computer. Any suggestions? Is it a driver problem? I don't know much tech-wise, but am willing to try if anyone has any ideas on how I can fix this.

The operating system is Windows 8.1 and the monitor is an AOC Envision 22" TV, model number L22H998. I visited the AOC website in search of a driver and didn't see the model listed. Is there perhaps an equivalent I could use? I don't know much about drivers.

Thanks and let me know if any more info is required for an accurate diagnosis.

A:New Computer (Win 8.1) Won't Detect External Monitor

Hi Dejalive, welcome to the Eight Forums.

Couple of questions:
Is the TV signal input set to correct HDMI port (for instance if the cable is in HDMI2 in TV, the TV signal input must be set to HDMI2)?Does the Windows Screen Resolution Tool show the TV when HDMI cable is connected both to PC and TV?If Screen Resolution does not show the TV by default, does clicking the Detect button help?
