Please Help, Android device won't obtain IP address from Network!

Q: Please Help, Android device won't obtain IP address from Network!

Droid 3 won't obtain IP address from my network, please help thank you!

I just got the motorola droid 3, my first android device. I'm trying to figure out how to get my device to connect to my network as it won't obtain the IP address. I have a Motorola Surfboard SBV5120 Modem and a Microsoft MN-700 router. I just switched from the Palm Pre Plus which connected perfectly to this network, the network is unsecured and has 2 pc's and a 360 running on it. I was able to connect to my friend's wireless network fine at his house. I'm not very familiar with routers and their settings, any advice or walkthrough of this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Please Help, Android device won't obtain IP address from Network!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have set up my connection as per the following article
http://www.siyge.com/2013/03/24/create-hotspot-in-windows-8-adhoc-network/

The netsh commands I used are:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyWlan key=qwertyui keyUsage=persistent

netsh wlan start hostednetwork
The difference is:
a) I am sharing a USB modem connection
b) I have turned off Windows Firewall ( I use Comodo nternet Security)
I have a dell n5010 laptop using Windows 8.

When I tried to connect my Android device to it, the device simply gets stuck at the "Obtaining IP address step"
I decided to use a Blackberry device and the same error occurred.
To be doubly sure, I even used another Laptop running Windows XP SP3 to connect to the hostednetwork, even it got stuck at the "Obtaining IP address" part for some time. Then it got connected with "Limited or no connectivity" status.

A:HostedNetwork is Set up, Android device is unable to obtain IP Address

The following procedure worked for me.
1) Disable Internet Connection Sharing from your modem connection -> properties -> Sharing Tab
2) Enable it again.
3) Disconnect from the Internet.
4) Reconnect again
5) Restart ICS service from the "services.msc" window.
6) Stop the hostednetwork
7) Start the hostednetwork
8) Internet Sharing is now enabled and everything gets resolved.

Hello,

I have 4 computers on my network. 3 desktops and 1 laptop, 1 desktop is wired, 2 desktops and the laptop are wireless. This morning when I turned my laptop on I could not get on the network or the internet. The message on the computer icon in the bottom right corner of the screen says "Limited or no connectivity. The 2 wireless desktops work as always as with the one that is wired. I have reset the router and removed the wireless adapter from the laptop and reinstalled. still cannot connect. It does show the internet on the software. I am totally lost as to why 2 will connect but my laptop won't. Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks,

Hello, hoping for some help.I can not connect to the internet. The network connection status is "can not obtain new ip address".History is, I had Google redirect virus. I routinely run malwarebytes and superantispyware on this computer. These get rid of the fake antivirus that I often get (can't convince the wife to quit looking at celebrity mag. stuff.) I have used ComboFix to get rid of viruses before and thus ran it the other night. Now I can not connect to the internet with the above stated status.Windows XPDSL with a Embarq 660 series modem (was the service provider at the time I got DSL.)Directly connected to the modem from the computer (no wireless, no router.)onboard network disabled in bios for years due to power surge and use an old pci network card.ipconfig at the command prompt give this....Connection-specific DNS Suffix:IP Address: 0.0.0.0Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0Default Gateway:I have contacted the ISP of which they were no help. Said everything is good on their end.I am posting on a PC at work since I do not have connection at home. I hope to have my work laptop back (it is being repaired as well at the IT department) to look here but I may not be able to post back until the following day.

You may have to reinstall the driver for your network card. Go to the pc manufacturer website and download it using a functioning computer and save it to a CD or USB stick.

Hi,

So I have an Acer Aspire One notebook and I recently got a virus on it due to something that was going round on Facebook... Anyway, I tried everything I could to try and get rid of it, but then came to realise my only solution would be to restore my computer to factory settings.

I did this and now I can't get it to connect to the internet. It recognises the network and connects to the network, just with no internet access as it says that the wireless network adapter can't obtain an IP address... I have googled the problem and seen lots of posts about it, but they are all too technical for me to understand how to resolve it.

I am a 23 year old and have mild learning difficulties. I can understand what I need to do if it is explained in as simple terms as possible, but I don't understand a lot of the terminology.

It has always connected to the internet absolutely fine so I am not sure what the problem is.

I would really appreciate it if someone could offer me some help with resolving my issue.

Thanks in advance.

My dad is trying to connect to the wireless network in our house, and it goes fine until the "renewing IP address stage". It just stays there and doesn't feel like working. Is there any way I could just assign a static IP myself to his comp? Or is it (it probably is...) more complicated?

when I go to network properties, it shows staight zeros where the IP address formerly was located.....just replaced video card and battery for bios was disconnected for just a few minutes when we were going thru the trouble-shooting process. I've already done a restore to a point before the problem with the video card and that didn't solve the blank IP address problem...thanks for any help..

Have a hp mini notebook, WXP, using Wireless connection which has been running just fine for many days.
Have a number of other computers accessing same 2wire network with no problem; both wireless and cable

The mini sees the 2wire and receives strong signal but doesn't display it to connect to in the "available wireless network window". The window doesn't see other nearby wireless either which I think it can. I have tried a number of things via adapator and setting up "new" connections..........and the last time I had this issue I ended up re-installing WXP, but what a drag.

I did do one thing the other day that I wondered if it was stupid. While it was running on AC I did take out the notebook battery to clean it up a bit since it wasn't holding a very long charge.........I wondered if I had messed something.

Anyway, worse case I reload windows..........best case there is a simple task I perform to receive my address, presumably IP address.

Hello,

I have a network setup so that a wireless router is connected to my westell versalink. This enables my network to be wireless. Everything works and I set it so that the versalink is the DHCP server and assigns IP addresses. However whenever I try to connect my laptop via wireless, it keeps saying unable to obtain IP address. So to get it to work I have to unplug the wireless router (turn it off) and replug it to make it work. Is there a way to solve this so I don't have to do that? I disable the wireless router to act as a DHCP server so there shouldn't be any conflicts with the versalink. However I did set the wireless router IP address to be within the range of the DHCP addresses...But this shouldn't cause any problems, right?

Anyway please help! I am tired of unplugging and plugging ARGH

Greetings!
I will try to keep this short.
My current Setup:
Main Router:
Model : Bell Canada Connection Hub
SSID : Wifi 1
Security : WAP2
Gateway : 192.168.2.1
Subset Mask : 255.255.255.0
DHCP : On
IP Range: 192.168.2.10 to 192.168.2.254

Access Point:
Model : D-LINK DIR-820L
SSID : Wifi 1
Security : Same as Router (same SSID and password)
Gateway : Was 192.168.0.1 but is now inaccessible
No Static IP Address (may be a problem)
DHCP : Off
The moment I turned DHCP off, I was not able to access the Config page of the AP anymore.

So here is my problem, all I wanted to do was being able to Port Foward, but behind two routers it gets pretty hard. So I turned my D-Link into an AP to be able to port foward easily.
My Mother's iPhone and my OnePlus One are connected to Wifi 1 without any issue.
But any "new" cellphone or laptop get stuck at "Obtaining IP Address...", "Authenticating..." or "Limited Access"

I also tried to rename the Main Router SSID to Wifi 2, still can't connect to either Wifi 1 (D-link) or Wifi 2 (Hub).
I feel like I have missed something, I can Factory Reset the D-Link as much as I want but not with the Bell Hub.

In my Port Foward I only have 3 open Ports:
WoL (wake on lan): Protocol UDP, port 9 on the IP address 192.168.2.254 (Broadcast)
WoL2: Protocol UDP, Port 7 on the Static IP Address of my Main Computer : 192.168.2.28 which is plugged in the LAN Port 1 of the D-Link.

She tried ipconfig/ renew but she gets the message that she is trying an action on ..... that is not a socket (?)
She disabled her home network..
She can get a new ip address if she reboots, but she is getting tired of rebooting every two hours.

OK, I'm sure that somewhere in the vast stores of this forum, my question has been answered. However, all the posts I've perused haven't been helpful. I have a desktop and two laptops, running windows xp, all connected via a wireless Linksys router. Up until a week ago, everything worked fine. Suddenly one of the laptops refuses to obtain an IP address or DNS server address automatically.

After having read other answers to this question, I formally withdraw my "beginner" status and humbly submit that I am computer illiterate.

I have tried the http://www.tacktech.com/pub/winsockfix/WinsockFix.zip fix, tried the Microsoft automatic IP fix, tried to manually assign the IP address, tried cold boot, tried ripping my hair out. . .

The odd thing is that in "Wireless Network Connection Status" the computer thinks it is connected. Says excellent signal strength, showing the numbers sent and received going up merrily. Just when I click "properties" there is no IP address, and of course, I cannot connect to the internet no matter how I hold my mouth.

HELP! And, please, be very specific in your instructions, because some of us don't know how to find "gateway" without a map. . .

Thanks!

I have reset my TCP/IP and still nothing. I have tried connecting to the router by hardwire and that also does not work. Does anybody have any suggestions?

A:HP laptop will not obtain an IP address

If it connects to the network but not to the internet, try making sure the gateway IP is correct. I've always manually configured my TCP/IP connection IPs, and unless you have the correct gateway IP, the computer doesnt know where to get internet from. (The gateway IP will be the IP of your router)
If you need help manually configuring your IPs, let me know, otherwise, good luck

Hi,

I have a wireless home network. I have two laptops both of which I use with a wireless card. On one of them I am able to use it without any problem. On the other laptop however, although it shows the laptop as connected to the wireless network, it does not obtain a valid ip address. When I look for the ip address, it gives me an invalid address: 169. x.x.x
I was using the wireless connection at another friends place yday using the same laptop and it connected just fine. When I try to do an ipconfig /release, it gives me back the same ip address 169. instead of a 0.0.0.0
Also, when I try an ipconfig /renew, it just times out.

Any ideas? Am completely frustrated by now (.

Thanks a million,

A:Obtain MAC address for laptop

A router/switch does keep a table of all MACs it sees, I think, but the table is not accessible to users. But MAC addresses stay at the local router, the next hop it takes is based on the destination ip address. So even if you know the MAC of your lost laptop, you won't be able to find it using a MAC.

Having a bit of difficulty with this laptop. I have tried everything to get it to connect to my friends network but it refuses to connect. Just get the message "Limited or no connectivity".

The laptop is an HP NC6120, with the wireless radio built in. It is running XP Pro and we are trying to get it to connect to his Charter.net cable modem/router. I have checked the TCP/IP settings to be sure that it is set to Obtain IP automatically. I've set a static address as well to no avail. When I had the static set I looked at the status and it was ending bytes but not receiving any.

The laptop will connect if we use the Local Area connection and a wire. No problems there.

I've tried running the /release and /renew from the command prompt. It will release ok but the renew command just times out after a while just like the Repair function does.

Tried power cycling the router a couple times as well as the radio on the laptop...no difference.

I don't think the problem is with the router as my friend told me that he just had some relatives staying with him and they were able to connect with their laptops no problems. He is using WEP encryption and has entered the correct key.

The laptop has not firewall running except for windows, and Avast antivirus...disabled both of those.

Tried reinstalling the wireless drivers...to no avail. I just had this laptop at my work and was able to connect it to the network there through wireless, and I even downloaded severa... Read more

A:Laptop will not obtain IP address

If he's using the passphrase option and not HEX keys for the router, that doesn't always work with different brands of equipment. I'd try removing all encryption from the router to see if you can connect, then use ONLY the HEX key option for the WEP key.

Best is to simply move to WPA or WPA2, much better encryption.

Can my HP laptop which was stolen on the 15/06/16 be tracked, if not how do I obtain the mac address

A:my hp laptop was stolen how do i obtain the mac address

Chino_Yu_Zeet Sorry, but you're operating under a misconception. A PC does not have a Mac Address. This address is a unique code assigned to a piece of networking equipment, not to a PC. So, if your PC had built-in wired networking, that would be one Mac address. If it also had built-in Wifi, that would be a second Mac address. These addresses are provided in bulk form to the manufacturers of networking equipment. In addition, HP keeps no records of individual Mac addresses for individual PCs, so there's no way they could provide you that information. And finally, Mac addresses can be "spoofed", meaning, if I had a piece of equipment from someone else, and I knew they had a way of tracking that address, it's a simple matter to "fake" the address on this piece of equipment so it no longer matches the original Mac address. Sorry, but at this point (1) there's no way to obtain that information, and (2) even if you had it, it would do you no good. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

Ok, this may sound weird, but I want to know if there is a way to get the IP address used by someone sending me emails? Yes, in the end I want to find his address.

Long story short: this guy is trying to extort me, and I have filed a police report already, but I am trying to help the cops find his address so they can arrest him, since I don't know how much effort they are going to put into this investigation.

I know his general area of where he lives. And I have 3 old emails sent from him before he has cut off communication.

I *might* be able to get him to reply again if need be, but that would rely on some trickery from a new email address etc and would be hard to do, so any method using the old emails would definately be preferable.

PLEASE help me help the cops!

Thanks!

I utilized Google and search results directed me to Microsoft 'Support' with the url http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779064. After attempting the 3rd prompt (ipconfig/release), I received another error telling me that "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected." Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the infomation above those entries

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

When I try manually assigning an address it still won't let me connect to the network. I've read that it might be the DHCP settings but I already have that enabled. If someone can help me I can post any required information you might need to help solve the problem.

I have desktop with Windows 98 SE and I am trying to connect to my cable modem using a network card. My computer can't get an IP address from my broadband service so it assigns an autoconfiguration IP address and I can't get on the Internet.

I have tried two different network cards with the same result. I have connected a laptop to the cable modem and it works fine. I have also connected my desktop via USB to the cable modem and it works fine but I need to use Ethernet so that I can eventually use a router. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network card with no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the problem?

I've got a single Windows XP machine connected to a cable modem. I am able to obtain a dynamic IP address from my ISP but I cannot Ping any other addresses (I tried by DNS name and by IP address.) I am also unable to get a reply when I ping ISP Gateway. I am however able to get a reply when pinging the loopback address (127.0.0.1) Both Zone Alarm and the Windows XP firewall are disabled during all my attempts. I have used netsh int ip reset to reset the TCP/IP stack and tried a second network card but neither had any effect. The cable modem appears to be functioning properly and I assume the network cable is OK or I wouldn't be able to get an IP address in the first place. The ISP says the problem is on my end. Norton AV does not detect any problems. I've tried everything! Any suggestions?

Hello, Im not sure if this is in right category, but i guess it will be seen regardless

Anyway, I have an hp desktop pc, running windows 7, with high speed cable connection.. Im attempting to obtain a new ip address.. but when I go to command prompt, and type in ipconfig/release, I get an error telling me that "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected"

Im not sure what this error means. Can anyone help?

A:Media Disconnected - cannot obtain new ip address

The error means that with 'Media disconnected' you have no IP address to release.

I'm assuming that your real issue is an inability to get a connection. If that's a good assumption ...

What is the brand and model of your modem? What is the brand and model of your router, if you have a separate unit?

The inability to get a connection could be because you did not power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) the modem when switching the device connected to it, or a defective cable or a defective NIC.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

hello. i am 19 years old so i don't exactly have lots of experience with all this. I am having a problem which i could use help with. Lately i have been using the Microsoft virtual network adapter (im sure you've heard of it!)
I wrote a small batch file for the purpose of starting the network. (ill copy and paste it in at the bottom) now this program worked perfectly for about a month but now i cant get a device to connect to the network as nothing can obtain an ip address.
What i did to troubleshoot..
1. I changed the ip settings from dhcp to static.
this allowed me to connect to the network but i couldn't access the internet.
2. I checked the properties of the network from the control panel and it
shows that my network is sending packets but is not receiving any. I tried
running windows troubleshooting on the network and it tells me that the
network does not have a valid ip configuration. even though it is set
dhcp.
3. I tried typing the following into cmd "netsh interface ip reset"
in return i get;

I can suggest trying the connectify software rather than using the netsh commands. You should try reinstalling the driver for the wireless NIC if you are having problems setting up the hosted wireless network.

Connectify - Turn your PC into a Wi-Fi Hotspot and Get Faster Internet

You can also try setting up the hosted wireless network using the virtual router software.

Or you could try going over the netsh commands to make sure they are correct.

Hi,
I appreciate any responses as I understand how busy everyone is.

The problem I have is with my friends HP pavillion dv6000 Vista Home Premium SP2 with a NVIDIA nForce NIC

He has been unable to connect to the internet for some time now. We did all the standard ts (reboot modem, contact service provider, change out cables ect.) to no avail. When we connected another lappy to his modem it connected no problem.

I took his laptop home, hooked it up to my modem, no connection, then i hooked it up to my router, no connection.

I tried to run ipconifg/release and got the following message

an error occured while releasing interface loopback psuedo-interface 1 : the system cannot find the file specified

which led me to this post

and this post

when i try netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
i get
Reseting Echo request, failed.
Access is denied
Reseting Global, OK!
Reseting Unicast Address, OK!
Reseting Route, OK!
A reboot is required to complete this action.

after the reboot still can't connect.

I have also tried what this post suggests to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us

I have also tried uninstalling the NIC from the device manager and then rebooting.

Finally went in to the TCP/IPv4 Properties clicked use the following ip address:

Hi -
I have an older IBM Thinkpad (365X) with Win95B. I have a Xircom Ethernet/56K Modem PCMCIA card, which I know works, since I can use it in other machines that I have.

I have DSL with a netgear router that has a DHCP server, which I also know works, since I'm using it to send this message.

I have reinstalled the adapter, all of the protocols, the client software, and the physical card in every way I can imagine, and cannot seem to get the machine to recognize the network. I checked the MS support site, and downloaded the Winsock2 patch. Didn't help. Still getting message about not being able to obain an IP address from the DHCP server. Most frustrating.

When I ping my own machine, I get an response with no lost packets. When I ping any of the 3 other machines on my local network I get a "request timed out" response.

If I hard code the IP address into the machine, I still cannot see any of the other machines.

I'm about ready to give up, so if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

Thanks

RT

Hello everybody!

I've had an extremely frustrating day trying to connect my WDTV Live to my desktop PC, and after not getting any help from the WD forums, thought I might move up the ladder because surely someone here can help! ;P

So, down to business...

I connect to the net through a wireless connection to my router. Because its in the other room, I can't connect my WDTV Live to the router without running cable along the floor. Having said that, its not far away from my desktop PC, so I'm trying to connect them directly via cable. The problem is that my WD keeps telling me that it can't obtain an IP address and I don't know how to fix it or what values to put in.

Heres my ipconfig (hopefully that helps):

It would be a lot better to just run a cable to your router. Running this connection will put your WDTV on address of 192.168.137.x

I should add that your computer will not be your router for the WDTV.

That would be very difficult.
Lets first find out if your if your Audio jack is broken.
Go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc Right click the devmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager are there any yellow flags? If so, these devices need drivers installed.
What is the make and model# of your laptop? Go to the manufacturers support/download drivers and type in your make and model# or service tag # and download the Chipset and Audio driver for your computer.

My set up is a 2wire router that connects to the internet, with an ethernet power plug connected to it. Over the other side of the house, I have the other ethernet power plug connected, with a Netgear router in access point mode.

The main router is on 192.168.1.1, and the access point is on 192.168.1.3. The DCHP server is enabled on the main router with range 192.168.64 to 192.168.1.253. The access point has the DCHP server turned off. The routers have the same APN and security (WPA2-PSK). Also, the wireless channels don't overlap, channel 1 and 11.

Now to my problem:
The internet always works fine for a few days when the routers are turned on. But at some point between 1 to 3 days later, every computer can't obtain an IP address while connected to the access point. But all computers can connect to the main router (i.e. when closer to the main router than the access point), and then go near the access point and it keeps the connection. If I reboot the access point, then everything works again for a few days.

I have tried replacing the main router, and replacing the ethernet plug with a version that has a wireless access point built in. But I get exactly the same problem.

Any ideas?

Hello,

I have been battling this problem for over a month now.

I lose connection to the internet at random times.  Eventually, I figured out that under TCP/IPv4 Properties, "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is being changed to "User the following DNS server addresses", and then an IP address would be specified for "Preferred DNS server".  When I undo this change and choose "obtain DNS server address automatically", I regain my internet connection.

I tried checking these settings at random times when there is no problem with my internet connection.  Most of the time the setting is unchanged.  But sometimes a Preferred DNS server is specified.  It feels like at those times, my internet speed is slower than usual, but I can't be sure.

I have Windows 7.  I tried scanning my computer with Microsoft Security Essentials, but it didn't find anything.

When I used HijackThis.  I attempted to fix some entries that didn't look right.  However, when I scan my pc using HijackThis again, it displays all of the entries that it said it fixed the last time. In addition, when I tried clicking "analyze this" in HijackThis, I received an error message that I wasn't connected to the internet (even though I could load websites).

You can imagine how grateful I would be if I were to receive any help with this nightmare.

Thank you for considering this problem and for reading my message.
