Preferred Solution: Dell OptiPlex 3040 MT Windows 7 Pro (includes Windows 10 Pro) - How to install Windows 10 ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello
I am using MDT 2013.  I've imported the driver pack for the OptiPlex 3040 from Dell for Windows 7 x64.  After MDT installs the OS, it reboots into Windows to begin initialization but it never finishes.  Instead it reboots again and goes into the Dell Diagnostics utility and runs a test on memory.
After the test runs, it tries to boot into Windows and I end up selecting "last know good config."  It finally loads windows but then none of the USB ports work.  I have to remote into the pc to manually install the USB and chipset drivers to finish the MDT deployment process.  This has happened on multiple machines and is a repeatable process.  Is anyone else having this issue?

A:Dell OptiPlex 3040 Windows 7 MDT Problems

Did you either manage to resolve this issue? Or did you always have to go through last good config?
I'm trying to get Windows 7 x86 to install on both a OptiPlex 3040 and a Latitude E5570 with no joy. The previous models were fine.

Hi,
I am trying to create a windows 7 image to the new PC's that we have just purchased. On boot after pxe network boot I get the message "Please add the network driver to the windows PE image on Windows Deployment Services." I have added many drivers to WDS with no luck and the correct one from the dell website errors and will not let me added it. I have the packaged the drivers into the install.wim and boot.wim using the AIK but still no luck. The drivers from the dell website do not seem to work in the PE environment. I'm hoping that someone has done this before and can point me to the correct driver. I have been looking for the best part of two weeks and i'm sure it can't be this hard.
Thanks in advance!

This machine is not connected to a domain. It is in a homeoffice workgroup with full local admin rights. The feature updates 1607 and 1703 will not install during Windows Update. They fail constantly. I tried downloading the standalone installers for them but they fail as well stating that they are "not applicable to this computer". I even downloaded the standalone installer for creator update 1709, which had not yet shown up in the customers Windows Update just see if it would work and it failed with the same message as well. I've uninstalled the antivirus and tried the Windows Update reset procedures outlined on Microsoft support help article 971058 but same issue. Before resorting to reinstalling Windows I was hoping maybe someone here could shed some light on the situation. As a sidenote, all other Windows updates work fine. Its just those 3 that fail.I know this is primarily a hardware forum but I posted here to confirm a claim from a tech who responded to this question when I posted it on Reddit claiming these creator updates were not compatible with these Dells which makes no sense to me.
Thanks in advance,
Adam

A:Dell Optiplex 3040 with Win10 Pro - Creator Update 1607 and 1703 will not install

A general comment.  The Windows version you have may be an issue.  Its not that its not compatible with Dell, its that some updates will not install on Enterprise versions as they leave it up to the corporate IT department on when/if they want to implement the updates on corporate systems.
Considering you have an OptiPlex (one of Dell's business system lines) this may be the case.

On January 10th a new BIOS update was released for the OptiPlex 3040 which added 'Windows 10 Enterprise support'.

This is mainly a user-to-user forum and only Dell can answer that question.

They have the DELL factory Windows 7 Pro SP1 image on them. When trying to activate Windows, the activation fails. Recently our secretary informed me that in the past 2-3 months she had a strange occurrence twice:
The 3040 micro (running windows 10) was locked and making a beeping sound (she couldn't describe the pattern, but must had been very noisy since she mistook it with an alarm going off)
On the monitor there was a blue (not 100% sure about the color) screen, with a big computer icon in the center, no description or text whatsoever, no windows taskbar or anything. Underneath this central icon, was a smaller one with a speaker icon that you could click on (from what she explained the mouse was working) muting the beeping sound.
The only escape route was the power button of the computer.
At first I thought it must have been the new Windows 10 BSOD. When I googled it though, I couldn't find any similar incident, the BSOD appears different from her description too. I checked the event log, but there was nothing critical or error that I couldn't account for. It has Kaspersky internet security installed and it's up to date so I doubt it's some virus/malware; Plus the computer is new (4-5 months).
Now I'm wondering if it was indicative of hardware failure or power surge. I asked her to take a photo next time she sees it, but I thought I'd ask here in the meantime.  - I've seen computers coming up with a screen from the MoBo informing me that the computer was locked in order to avoid damage from a power surge that just happened. But never seen one with ... Read more

I've been salivating at the idea on installing W 8-64 Pro on a Dell Optiplex 755 at work. But a sudden reality check came over me & I realize Windows 8 doesn't necessarily work on older machines. The Dell is a Vista era machine. So maybe W 7-64 Pro would be a better choice?

Hi,
We ordered and received 4 new OptiPlex 7440 AIO All-in-One computers without Windows installed - only Ubantu is installed.  The desktops do not have a built-in optical drive.  I get the following error message when I try to install Windows 7: "A required CD\DVD drive device driver is missing.”  I tried using an external optical drive and USB boot device to install.  I am also plugged into the USB 2.0 ports and not the USB 3.0.  I tried many of the suggestions Google has provided me, but none of them are working.  I'd appreciate any help.
FYI, I called Dell Support twice about this issue.  The first technician hung up on me when he realized he didn't know what to do to help and the second technician said I had to pay $89 for help.  When I asked to speak to her supervisor, she hung up on me. Since Dell likes to rudely hang up on their loyal customers, I'm hoping the community will be more helpful.

Ok. I've a look on BIOS settings, and I see NEW (almost disconnected) SSD (Transcend) as bootable device. And NO Samsung SSD in boot device. Only Transcend which is no more connecned to motherboard. In SATA I see only Samsung SSD connecned, but I don't see it in BOOT section.

have recently taken delivery of 150 Dell Optiplex 3040 PC's all with the same specification.
I am trying to image then using MDT.
Before taking delivery of all the PC's I took a sample of 2 to test with to make sure I could create an image and deploy it. This worked without any problem using Litetouch and a defined sequence. Happy days.
I then took delivery of the remaining PC's and tried to apply the same image. However this fails on every PC I have tried apart from the initial 2 samples and it is driving me crazy. PC spec is identical for all PC's and there is only one W10 cab available from Dell that I am using for drivers.
I get a black screen  stating
windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
Status Oxc000001
A required device is not connected or can't be accessed.
This happens as the process seems to be connecting to the Litetouch image so I think it might be a possible NIC issue, even though it does successfully connect to the WDS deployment server.
Any suggestions?

A:Dell Optiplex 745 - Windows XP Pro 32-bit Dell System direct issue.

The older versions of Dell System Detect are security risks - if you're running an antivirus program, it may be flagging and intercepting the program.  At any rate, you should NOT be using Windows XP online at this point, as it has seen no security updates in almost two years - you really need to upgrade to a supported version of Windows (at this point, that's a minimum of Windows 7).

I recently purchased a Dell and the only way the hardware options I wanted would come is if the OS was Windows 7 Pro with an included Windows 10 Pro License.  So I received the computer and I would like to upgrade it from the start.  However, I can't seem to find instructions on how to do this.
I have looked at the How to Set Up your new Dell Computer on the Knowledgebase, but it does not mention my situation.
I have looked at the Windows 10 Upgrade Walkthrough on the Knowledgebase. But it does not mention my situation.
I have tried the WIndows 10 Downgrade System on the Knowledgebase, but again it does not mention my situation.

The computer came with a purple CD that sys to ensure that the BIOS setting is set to UEFI mode prior to installing Windows 10.  But if I adjust this setting and run the CD there is no mention about upgrading to Windows 10 in the options available.
The Windows 10 Upgrade walkthrough talks about updating the Windows 7 install with Service Pack 1, but none of the info that came with the PC shows an upgrade code which I would probably need since the Microsoft free upgrade time period has expired.
So how to I upgrade this new computer to windows 10?  Just wondering what info I am missing.  I assumed this would be simple.  I shouldn't have to reinstall all my preinstalled software and drivers on a brand new computer on day one.
Thanks,

Hello Support Users,
I'm having an issue with the OptiPlex 3040 Intel HD Graphics 530 Driver for Windows 10 Pro. The machine will work fine for awhile then while certain applications like Microsoft Excel are running, the machine will stop working and give the following error:"Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
This machine has 2 monitors so using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter doesn't work, even googling if that works or detects such is almost absent. I'm just letting whoever know it doesn't work with dual monitors on Windows 10 Pro.
I've found this link and installed the following display driver to see if that clears the issue + adjusted some PC settings in "Advanced System Settings" Under This PC : Windows still chooses what to do for visual effects and Virtual Memory is now 4096MB. I've also added the TdrRelay = 10 to the GraphicsDriver section in Registry.
Here is the link that's been suggested and the steps I've taken so far, I did skip the DELL driver and went for the initial Intel Generic Driver instead.
Is anyone else facing this issue with their onboard graphics?
Thread I've used so far to troubleshoot:www.intel.com/.../000005482.html

While they were playing the cursor from the Microsoft wireless mouse disappeared. I put in a new battery and tried pressing the tiny buttons on the bottom of the mouse and the USB stick. Still nothing.

On the screen was a long horizontal box that said Press space bar to exit, or something like that.
I don't know if it was a prompt from the game, or some kind of spyware thing, but I pressed it and it shut down the browser.

Without a cursor, and looking at my desktop icons, I figured I better restart the computer. So I used my keyboard to start Shut Down. It then started to install 8 updates. After the last one, message was "WIndows shutting down". That stayed that way for a good 1/2 hour.

Hello,

Searched many sites, tried many suggestions. Issue is GPU on PCI slot not detected for Dell OptiPlex 990 using Win10 Pro. The GPU is EVGA GTX960. Installed PSU as well at 550 Watts. The BIOS does not let you to disable the integrated video card. I have done the following.. updated BIOS, reinserted GPU, uninstalled driver and disabled and disconnected cable to integrated video, and tried to use CMD bcdedit/set pciexpress forcedisable.

When booting up new GPU van turns on but then turns off.

Best Regards,

Word.

Computer was working fine and then it just crapped out. Running Windows XP. When I start it up, it flashes the Dell screen, and then it goes to a blank black screen with the cursor in the top left corner. If I do F12, I can bring up boot options and system diagnostics but that's all. No safe mode option. I was going to reload the operating system as there is nothing on the computer worth saving. I put the windows xp reinstall cd in and it says "Push any key to boot from cd.." and then it just hangs no matter what I push. What should my next step be, please! It's a work computer which we need to have operating if we can.

A:Windows XP won't load on Dell Optiplex

Hi

From the symptoms you described, i suspect a HDD failure. Follow the below steps.

1 ) Remove the side cover and replace the HDD cable (IDE or SATA). If you don't have a spare cable, borrow the CD drive cable. This step will solve any potential connectivity problems.

2 ) Run built in System Diagnostics. Press F12 during power on and select the "diagnostics". Allow it to run a full extended test. Post the result of the test in next reply.

3 ) If Dell diagnostics didn't find any problems, download and run Seagate seatool for DOS.

    http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Burn the ISO to a CD using Imgburn or any ISO burning app. After booting from the CD, select long test and allow it to check the full surface of the HDD. Report the output of the test displayed by seatool.

Here is an example video on how to use seatool.

Hello,I've been experiencing a very frustrating problem on my PC. Around 2 minutes after turning it on and entering the OS the screen freezes and there's nothing to do but force the PC to turn off pushing the power button.I've updated the drivers, checked all the conections and nothing. It also seems that it happens more often whenever I connect the Ethernet cable before turning it (the PC) on. I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem but I need to fix it ASAP since it is the computer I work with.
Here's a couple of screenshots of the PC characteristics (I hope you don't mind it is in Spanish):

Hey guys!
Is it possible to install Windows 7 on this machine?
My dad found a Optiplex GX280 lying around somewhere.
He brought it back home and I was pretty impressed by it's specs.
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)

Memory (RAM) 503 MB

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz

2773.4 MHz

Am not so sure about a graphics card,
I opened it up and it seemed like something was missing.
It doesn't really matter now.

I will use this computer as a secondary in my home,
Am going to set it for my dad,
So he won't use mines anymore.

Am having second thoughts about installing Windows 7 on this machine because of it's low RAM and it's older chipset.

If I do install Win7 on this machine,
Am going to remove all the eye candy from it so it won't rely as much on it's graphics.

I also posted this almost exact post here:
Dell Optiplex GX 280
(Since the author of that post also talked about the same machine)

The reason I want to install Windows 7 on this computer is because of HomeGroup.
I have a lot of files on my main computer that I might need in the future.
So in a long shot, I just want to sync up both computer in my network.

Should I go for it?

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.

Windows 7 System Requirements

Like you said, the RAM would be the an issue.
I would bump it up to at least 1GB..

Drivers for Windows 7 might also be an issue, Check with Dell Support Page for the model an see if they have any drivers for Windows 7.

You need a graphics card/device that supports at least DirectX9 in additon WDDM (Started when Vista came out)

Research before installing!!

If you have the Windows XP disk than I would maybe try it out (I say maybe because if it was me I would just accept XP but that does not mean it can't be done.)

If anything goes wrong or you can't find drivers that Windows 7 will accept than you can always re-install XP. (If you have the disk)

Although HomeGroup is a cool feature you can share a folder or even a drive in XP, or buy a network storage unit. That way any computers in your network can have access to files and folders

In the end all the specs are there if you bump the RAM to 1GB, just don't expect it to be fast.

Hope this Helps, and Happy Holidays!
Ryan

I have a Dell Optiplex 320 with 1 GB of ran (expandable to 4). It is a Dou Core so it uses one of these 2 chips:

IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 800MHz FSB Socket T with Dual Core technology XD, EM64T, 2x2MB L2 cache, and EIST (900 series)
IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 800MHz FSB Socket T with Dual Core technology XD, EM64T, 2x1MB L2 cache (800 series)
Will it run Windows 10. Does it support these:
PAE gives 32-bit processors the ability to use more than 4 GB of physical memory on capable versions of Windows, and is a prerequisite for NX.
NX helps your processor guard the PC from attacks by malicious software.
SSE2 is a standard instruction set on processors that is increasingly used by third-party apps and drivers.
If it would support those functions, with only 1 GB would it be too slow?

I got my Dell Specs from here

Wondering if i can run a dual boot running my already installed XP OS then adding Windows 7.

My PC is a Dell Optiplex 755 running Intel Dou core 2 E8200 @2.66GHz with 3.25 GB of RAM.

I'd like to add Windows 7 because my SONAR DAW software demands it. My XP OS is buggy with the drivers etc...

Can this be done? Or would i be better off just buying a new cheap PC that has Windows 7 loaded?

Just so you know... I want to keep my XP OS because I have CS3 loaded.
