Disabling "Energy Efficient Ethernet" via the command line

Q: Disabling "Energy Efficient Ethernet" via the command line

I need to disable this setting on my network adapters. I can see how to do this via the GUI (Control Panel->Device Manager->Network Adapters->[adapter]->Properties->Advanced), but I need to be able to do it via a command line script.
I've looked through netsh but I can't see anything in there. I can see the settings in the registry (under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0007) but ideally I don't want to go poking around in
there as there are multiple entries and I'm not sure what each of them do.
Does anyone know how I might do this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How to remove the "Authenticated Users" "Create Folders" permission from the root of the C Drive via command-line?
I know this question has been asked many times before, but nothing works for us!

Cuurent root C: owner is TrustedInstaller and acnnot be changed.
We cannot change or remove the Create Folders permission of the Authenticated Users of the root C: . Error Access Denied.
Drive C: is hidden via GPO, but many users can enter it from the File-Explorer and create folders in the root C:.
We do not want -for many reasons- to Block/ Prevent Access to C: via GPO.
We also tried to run cacls and/or icacls under the system-account (PSEXEC -i -s -d CMD). Error Access Denied.

Hello and thank you for reading my post.

If I'm logged in Windows as user "u1", I can execute "cmd.exe" "as administrator" by choosing

"Start" -> "cmd.exe" and right-click "Run as administrator".
I would like to start another "cmd.exe" console as "u2" and "as administrator".
(So, "u2" is not the current logged in user).

The following command:

u1 cmd.exe> runas /user:u2 "cmd.exe"
runs "cmd.exe" as "u2" but not "as administrator".

I would like to do this in command line. Can you tell me how?

Best regards.

u1 cmd.exe> means: I'm running "cmd.exe" as "u1".

A:Run "cmd.exe" as a given user and "as administrator" in command line

Hi Lea,

I don't believe that what you want to accomplish is possible. This is because Windows only "runs" one login at a time, unlike some true multi user operating systems, such as Linux.

If your logged in as U1, then you can only perform operations as U1, or as the Administrator. As far as running things as the Administrator is concerned, I believe in this case that you simply inherit the Administrators permission levels, thus permitting you to perform elevated activities.

If your U1 login has Administrator privileges then running as Administrator will be no different to running as U1!

Good luck

Hi All,

Previous PC was an XP and we had a shortcut within the Send To context menu called "Mail To" which when clicked on a file would open a new email with the file attached and with the default email (as done from within Outlook), not the crappy text "mail recipient" one that is standard in the Send To context menu.

The target string in the shortcut was
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\OUTLOOK.EXE" /c ipm.note

When trying to set up the same shortcut in Win 7 using the same string (but with Office14) we get an error which states. "The command line argument is invalid. Verify the switch you are using."
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE" /c ipm.note

If I navigate to the SendTo folder and double click the shortcut, it works. It opens up a new email as if I click New E-mail from within Outlook. But when selecting via the context menu, it fails everytime.

What can we do to fix this? We have to email a lot of files manually and opening a new email then attaching(or even drag/drop takes a lot of extra time.

Thanks for any advice.

A:"Mail to" shortcut in Send To context menu fails command line argument

Hello StuckatWork, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check in Default Programs to make sure that Microsoft Outlook is set as the default email client.

Are you able to select the files you want to attach and click on the E-mail command bar button for this to work that way instead?

I have a Windows 7 Professional PC with a backup routine that runs on boot-up in a batch file. It copies various files to a USB hard drive, then sends me a message on another PC saying the backup is complete.

I need a command to put in the batch file to safely remove the USB drive after the copying is done and before the "finished" message is sent.
I want the "Safely Remove Hardware" process to run, but I don't want to have to log in to the PC to click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. I already have the "Optimize for quick removal" set.

I have seen this thread:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/a163abeb-f4d6-425e-b30b-e900ab118f0a and do not need to show a missing box. I'd like to have the whole thing happen in the batch file without my interaction.
I realize there isn't an actual command line command, like COPY or DEL, but there must be something the OS runs when the "Safely Remove" icon is clicked and a choice from the popup menu is chosen.
Example: there's no command to lock the PC, even in Shutdown.exe. But this text in a command line:
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
locks the PC.
What's the line of text needed to eject a USB drive safely, preferably with feedback (if %Errorlevel% style) to show success or failure? (VBscript or WMI commands would be fine, too)

A:Command line to "Safely Remove a USB drive"?

I did ask on the Scripting Guys forum (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/ITCG/thread/964f7d82-8810-4c18-93a3-0e5de1a3f006) and the answer is that there isn't one. No Microsoft-only command can eject a usb drive just like "Safely Remove Hardware"
does it.
I finally settled on "RemoveDrive" (http://www.uwe-sieber.de/drivetools_e.html) because it returns an %errorlevel% in a batch file, based on whether it was successful in ejecting the USB hard drive or not. My batch file now works perfectly, and it automatically
ejects the drive after writing the backups to it.

A:"there was a problem sending a command line to program"

Try booting to Safe Mode with Networking, see how things behave.

If the problem goes away then something is starting at boot time that is causing the problem, or a Internet Explorer Add-on is causing the problem.

Boot normally, then start IE without Add-ons.

Click on Start, type iexplore -extoff and press Enter.

You will get an IE window like this:

Click on Home to go to your normal Home page. See how things are. If okay then use Tools / Manage Add-ons to disable them a few at a time till you find the culprit.

If that doesn't make any difference then Use msconfig to determine what is causing the problem

This is a good tutorial on using msconfig in Windows 7:
How to use msconfig in Windows 7

Click on Start, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Reboot and see if it runs better.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, start msconfig and click on the Services tab.
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system. Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.

Enable everything else you disabled.

So I've been trying to get my command line going for the past two days and it won't go. Everytime I type any command I get "not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file". For example pwd or lf won't work but cd does.

Everything I've found on the internet hasn't helped. My path variables include C:\Windows\system32; C:\Windows\System32; C:\Windows\System32\Wbem at the beginning so there's nothing wrong there. I even deleted the path variable and made a new one with the same path.

I also used Putty and connected via an SSH server (Bitvise SSH) and when I connected command line still didn't work.

Help me please!!!

A:Command Line, "not recognized as an internal..."

pwd and lf are *nix commands, which do not generally work on a Windows machine. To get to a command prompt from Windows, type "cmd", then hit enter and the command prompt will open up.

You will need to use "DOS" commands here, not "Linux" commands. For example, use "dir" instead of "ls" to list the files in a folder. "cd" is one command that can be used in both OS's to change directory.

While there are a (small) handful of features of Aero that i'd like to use, there are many more that slow down the UI and/or make it distracting that I can't find a way to disable.

(I even tried the "Basic" theme but it has a bug that discards font size settings made under the now-misnamed "color" dialog).

So I end up in Windows Classic, which is being made more difficult to use, including the aforementioned "color" dialog.

I've already been to the "Performance" settings and un-checked every animation available, but even after doing so two things remain:
1) The "glow" around control buttons. To me this is hideous and distracting.
2) Some animations still remain, slowing down the user interface.

To be clear, here's what I might like to use in Aero:
1) taskbar window previews
2) the program switching mechanisms (Flip or ALT+TAB)
3) maybe transparency would look okay, without the animations

Bottom line, Microsoft has bundled both good and bad features in this artificial "feature" called Aero, instead of making the features available individually, and made some of the Aero animations impossible to disable (as far as I know).

Have you had problems trying to disable your sound when printing on a Dell printer?

I recently installed Windows 7 and have a Dell printer (not sure if this happens with other printers) and every time I go to print it says "Now Printing" and at the end it says "Done Printing". I found this quite aggravating.

I did find a page on this website that had corrections for Vista, but not Windows 7, and the steps are a little different.

After trying to go into CONTROL PANEL and SOUNDS, I found that readjusting these settings did absolutely NOTHING to get rid of these announcements.

After some more of my own trouble-shooting, I figured out how to get rid of these announcements for a DELL printer:

1. Click on the Windows icon on the bottom left of your screen and scroll up to DEVICES AND PRINTERS and click on it.
2. Left click on your selected printer (will have green check mark) and scroll to PRINTING PREFERENCES and click on it.
3. A box will pop up. In the upper right hand corner, click on OPTIONS and scroll down to PRINTER STATUS OPTIONS and click on it.
4. Another box will pop up. Click on the circle to the left of 'Never Display the Printing Status' so that the circle becomes blue. Note: selecting this option will disable your printing announcements, but it will ALSO disable the box that pops up during printing that shows your ink levels and percentage of printing completed. If you want to continue to see this printing status box, you will have ... Read more

A:Windows 7: Disabling printer sound "Now Printing" and "Done Printing" for Dell

That saves me from having to go into the printer toolbox to manually check the ink levels.

Hello @all!

Sorry for my English... I'll try to explain it as simple as possible.

We have a computer where only remote access is done. We do not use keyboard or screen on it because we don't need to access it locally.

We had a problem to which I am looking for a solution. After a short power loss the computer started automatically up again but showed the message where you might boot into safe mode... and, as it seems, there is no time out. So we had to change the computer to another place for pressing enter.

Is there any possibility to avoid this message or put a timer?

We are using Windows 7 64bit.

Hello Everybody!

I don't know if this is a real issue, or just one of those "What the . . . .!!" situations. You judge.

I was working on a batch file that combines two .txt (ASCII?) files created in Notepad to create a composite file, and I noticed something really interesting. (And yes, when someone talks about doing something and the result is "really interesting", it's time to duck and hunt cover! )

Assume that there are two text files: "This.txt" and "That.txt", and they contain the text "This[cr-lf]" and "That[cr-lf]", where [cr-lf] is used to indicate a newline generated by hitting the "Enter/Return" key on the keyboard.

If you look at the files with a hex editor, what you see is something like this:
The file "This.txt" contains the text "This" followed by 0x0D0A, which are the ascii codes for CR and LF.
The file "That.txt" contains the text "That" followed by the same CR and LF characters.
Note that these two files contain nothing else.

Issue I discovered:
When I execute the command copy /y ".\This.txt"+".\That.txt" ".\This&That.txt", I do not get the simple concatenation of the two files, which is what I would expect. Instead I get the two files concatenated, (including the trailing CR/LF's as I would expect), but also one additional character, the hex character for a right-arrow symbol - 0x1A. In e... Read more

I have basic knowledge of the command terminal, in that I only know how to navigate through directories. Currently I am trying to execute the following:

java ?jar MRTBatch.jar ?d input_directory ?p parameter_directory\input_parameter_file ?o parameter_file_directory

I have already navigated to the correct directory to make use of the MRTBatch.jar tool, however the problem arises with my user inputs, which are of the form "C:\Users\My Name\Rest of path". I keep getting the error:

ERROR: Could not find directory "C:\Users\My Name".

When navigating directories earlier I always had to go find the file I wanted, copy its path location, paste it into the command terminal, and then erase the "C:\" portion (so it became cd\Users\My Name\Rest of path) for it to work. So when I got this error I have tried multiple edits for it to recognize the paths. Could it be as simple as switching the direction of the slashes? I would have thought the complete path name would always be best. Is it because I'm already burrowed down so far that it cant seem to recognize any file further back?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

Hi all, this originally started with an issue with the wireless. I recently installed a D-Link DIR-515 wireless router and did a basic setup, giving it WPA2 security. My Vista computer originally was able to connect to the router with Internet (and before that, to the modem directly with Ethernet), but it was infected by the Vista Security 2012 virus, which I removed after following some steps and MBAM. Since then, it can no longer connect to the wireless network, so I Googled the issue, and did a few things:
- Norton Remover,
- In command prompt, ipconfig and netsh + .... (some commands that reset/refreshed IP/DNS or something along those lines)
- Going to wireless settings and disabling ipV6
- Going to wireless setting and manually giving it an IP, Default Gateway, DNS (according to the specs that I found by using ipconfig on my working Windows 7 laptop)
- Updating the Atheros driver to version 9.1

Somewhere along the way, I must've nipped something important somewhere, because now the Vista machine doesn't connect to the internet wirelessly NOR with the Ethernet cable attached! The icon in the lower right hand corner shows that the machine sees the router, but with Local Access only.

I've done an ipconfig /all with the machine and here are the results (this is with ethernet attached):

My mother connects with her Nook tablet, my father with his laptop, and sometimes my phone and no problems. Until the other day when I randomly went to go on my computer I had no internet connection so I
1) Reset modem and router like I always do, still nothing.
2) Tried windows trouble shooting and gave me this message """"Ethernet" does not have a valid IP config".
3) I unplugged my Ethernet cable from my modem to the router and directly connected it from modem to computer and everything works fine and doesn't randomly lag out like before.

Could my router have become faulty? or did somehow the settings messed up for my router and I have to manually put ip addresses somewhere. Help please.

A:""Ethernet" does not have a valid IP config" help

I suggest:
Go to Belkin website and check if they have new firmware update. If so, update it.Open the elevated command prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns then type ipconfig /renew

I have used the @="cmd.exe /s /k pushd \"%V\"" type of Registry mod to obtain a context menu "Open elevated command window here" menu item, such as in the "Open elevated command window here" thread ( Open elevated command window here ).

However, the admin cmd window, even though it says "Administrator:" in the title bar, will not seem to work with the REG command (e.g., "REG SAVE [...]", etc.). If I even just type "reg /?" on the cmd line, it just jumps to the next (new) cmd line prompt, without any apparent action. (And, DISKPART will work here, even though REG doesn't.)

[The REG command works fine when I open a pinned cmd.exe link with Admin privileges.]

1. Has anyone else noticed this?

2. And, if I'm not the only user in the universe to have this "feature", does anyone know of a workaround?

A:No REG Command in "Open elevated command window here" DOS Box

Hello Fred, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Is this the tutorial you used below to add "Open elevated command window here"? Open Command Window Here as Administrator
The REG /? command works for me using this when I right clicked on C:\Users and Open elevated command window here.
Do you have your UAC notification settings set to at least the default or top level? Normally when you use "Open elevated command window here", you will get a UAC prompt to approve before the elevated CMD window opens. If you do not get a UAC prompt, then this may be why you are having this issue.

Hope this helps for now,

Generally speaking, higher resolutions (or anything that alters the display) requires more power for better quality.

None "produce" energy. They use it.

Intel unveils energy-efficient 48-core chip

Research chip said to be 10x to 20x more powerful than chips in multicore Core family

By Sharon Gaudin
December 2, 2009 03:46 PM ET

Computerworld - Intel Corp. is honing its sights on many-core chips that are far more powerful than today's dual and quad-core processors.

As expected, Intel took a big step in that direction today by unveiling a 48-core research chip that it says is 10 to 20 times more powerful than current the top end offering in its multi-core Core line of processors. Intel also noted that the experimental chip uses the same amount of energy as two household light bulbs.

With its eye on the data center and the cloud, Intel built fully functional cores in the new chip as part of what it calls its "terascale" mission.

"With a chip like this, you could imagine a cloud data center of the future which will be an order of magnitude more energy efficient than what exists today, saving significant resources on space and power costs," said Justin Rattner, Intel CTO and head of Intel Labs. "Over time, I expect these advanced concepts to find their way into mainstream devices, just as advanced automotive technology such as electronic engine control, air bags and anti-lock braking eventually found their way into all cars."

Today's unveiling of the 48-core research chip comes about two years after Intel showed off an experimental 80-core chip. That research chip had teraf... Read more

This is why I always scoff at people who are trying to build a machine that is "future proof". There is no such term in the computer industry. Instead, I find it better to buy middle of the road most times and simply upgrade more often down the road.

I am looking for advice on creating a home network that is extremely energy efficient. This is not for cost purposes, but rahter because I don't like to waste electricity. I hate leaving devices on that I am not using. I will have a wired network with computers scattered around the house. I would love to be able to have a server so that I can sign on at any computer in the house and work.
Do you have any suggestions on ways to hook up the router, switch and PC's (?NAS) that will minimize devices being on when not in use. Is there a home server that can awake on LAN?
I am also looking at setting up a music server that can be accessed from around the house. This is off forum but I am thinking I will have to have some device on all the time and would rather maximize its utility.
Thank you,

My motherboard has on board audio which I disabled in my bios in order to use my recording sound card. This worked flawlessly for over 2 years. Then sometime last year Windows installed my "Missing HD Audio Driver" which disabled all sound until i enabled the on board sound in the bios again, this of course meant i couldnt use my recording card.

All Windows and driver updates have been turned off, it still installs.

After many attempts at fixes i found online I gave up until more recently when i reformatted the computer and got it working. Then yesterday it started again. I have no idea what to do about it but im hoping that with a year having passed, maybe people have figured this out.

A:"HD Audio" drivers keep installing - disabling my recording sound card

This really did not need to be moved, as it is not specifically an audio problem. It is an issue with windows installing drivers when its not supposed to.

I recently bought a used Gateway M-2626u notebook (cherry red glossy shell) off of Craig's List. It came with MS Vista OS.

I connected to the wireless network and surfed the Net fine with the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. The other installed browsers are Explorer 8 and Safari. Notebook came with Norton 360, but trial period expired.

I installed some free softwares, and one of these is HyperCam.

One day the notebook suddenly shut down. I restarted.

I didn't know it came with a "malware" program that hijacks the browsers (Explorer and Firebox) with a rapidly flickering and very long redirecting URL "hxxp://bigseekpro.com ..." and the browser screen is "white blank" that go on forever.

I don't know what happened; after opening Safari, it failed to load anything, despite wireless switch being turned on on the side of the notebook and good wireless signal strength with a permitted access provided by a housemate.

I tried system restore, but malware is still embedded. I tried "about:config" in Firebox browser to reset a particular "key.url" or something according to instruction on the web trying to get rid of malware. Didn't work.

Malware (provided by HyperCam? I downloaded direct from HyperCam web site) hijacked IE and Firefox browsers to open "blank white" with a redirecting URL "bigseekpro.com ..." in addition to "corrupting" the OS or program that caused Internet connec... Read more

Okay, so, before anything else... I've already gone in and changed my system sounds. Everything but a handful of sounds (Device Connect/Disconnect, Email) have been turned off.

However, whenever I open a folder on my desktop and click anything within that folder - subfolder, back or forward button, the "address bar" (not sure what else to call it - its the bar where your system/folder location goes, like Music > Country), I get this annoying little beep sound like someone hit a high key on a piano.

I only ever hear it when I have my headphones on, thankfully... but it drives me absolutely NUTS when I do have them on!! And I cant find a single thing in Sounds to turn it off. And I wouldn't even begin to know how best to Google it to find an answer that way.

Also, I am aware I can just mute my system sounds (I had it that way before for this very reason) but since Windows Live Messenger is now Skype and does not notify about new emails (nor do they ever plan to apparently), I need my system sounds turned on so I know when I get email.

So, if any one knows how to turn this ever so "charming" notice sound OFF, please tell me. Thank you!

A:Disabling annoying system/folder "beep" sound

Go back into Sounds and under Windows Explorer turn off "Start Navigation". That should do it.

I found this solution for this annoying problem, which is, disabling autorun.
Disable Scan and Fix for Removable Drives in Windows - How-To Geek

I am looking for a way to disable this prompt, without disabling autorun. Is it possible, or is it an integral part of the autorun?

A:Disable "Scan and Fix Removable Disk", without disabling autorun

It's almost never a bug, more likely your stick or drive actually needs repair. Run a full Disk Check
from the Disk Tools, not the one which autoruns.

If that fails run SFC -SCANNOW Command
