Sound drivers installed correctly, but sound and related features work incorrectly

Q: Sound drivers installed correctly, but sound and related features work incorrectly

Sound in windows has been giving me a hard time lately. I had to restore my registry manually via the Windows Recovery Console recently because Windows kept thinking it was in safe mode, thus preventing a repair installation from continuing. So, after restoring the registry from an earlier part of the day when the issue wasn't a problem, Windows started up fine, and everything was working as it once did. Except for sound.

The volume controls icon does not show in the taskbar. I've gone into Control Panel -> Sounds and Devices and checked the box that is supposed to place the controls in the taskbar, but to no avail. Still doesn't show up. I know that this is usually caused by incorrectly installed sound drivers, but they are installed fine and do not appear in an errored state in the device manager. I've also reinstalled the sound drivers from my motherboard's drivers disc multiple times with no change.

Oddly enough, any sounds that are supposed to be played by Windows do not play. If I open a file in Windows Media Player or in a game, the sound plays perfectly fine.

On top of that, I'm also getting trouble with recording sounds. Not just with a microphone, but even from they stereo mix channel. In Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, looking at the Voice tab, the default device for Voice Playback is blank. I set it to Realtek HD Audio Output, but when I press apply, it resets to blank. When I set it to the Realtek Output and go to the 'test hardware' button, I can hear my own voice in the microphone just fine. When I open Windows Sound Recorder, the record button is gray and can not be pressed. Other sounds which are supposed to record sounds also say that an invalid device is specified, undoubtedly because the device is blank and will not change.

Any assistance with this infinitely annoying problem will be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Can you see the sound card in the Device Manager in System Properties?

Did this problem start recently or since the installation of XP? Did you get sound at anytime earlier(even on other OSes)?

Hello, and thanks in advance for your time!Earlier this afternoon, I noticed that the sound on my Thinkpad W510 was no longer working. I hadn't really done anything of note with my computer- just updated Adobe Reader to v9.2, that I can think of. When I checked the notification area, I saw this:However, when I right click and click "Playback Devices", I get the following: I immediately checked Device Manager, and found that everything appeared to be fine:I tried uninstalled and reinstalling the Conexant and NVIDIA drivers, as well as updating BIOS. Nothing seems to help, When try to use the mute/volume buttons on the keyboard, the speaker mute button lights up when pressed, but the microphone mute and volume +/- buttons don't appear to do anything. I've also tried plugging in headphones, and that does not make any difference. When I boot from an Ubuntu CD, however, sound works fine, so I don't think that it's a hardware issue.Anything that you folks could do to point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have the laptop as stated above, i have had it a week and the user before me had decided to put on 7 instead of 8. i completely wiped and restored to windows 8.1, installed all sammy drivers and ensured it is all up to date.

the laptop had huge instability issues, the hdd was on its way out as mbr was damaged and the heads were ticking badly. then i found the ram was not secured in the sockets properly too. so i fixed it all!

Anyways back to the problem. i have the realtek hd audio drivers installed from sammy, reinstalled the ones from realtek themselves and still nothing.

Main issue, mic and speakers built in work and are fully detected. but the microphone port and headphone port are not detected, no matter what i plug into them.

I have tried a lot and nothing so far. Please help!

Many laptops have the mic and headphone jack assembly connected to the main motherboard by some type of connector. Considering the other problems, first thing would be to check internal connections.

I hope someone can help. I'm not fully knowledgeable with computers but know the basics.
I bought a second hand Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows 7.
I have no sound.
The drivers are installed in Device Manager (Realtec AC'97), and also (Uniplex Half Modem) both under sound, video controllers. There are no exclamation marks in device manager. All drivers are up to date.
Dell diagnostic and Microsoft Fix it both say everything is ok.
There is no sound from internal speaker. I tried external speakers via green jack at back & front of machine but there is no option to select these speakers.
If I try to play music then nothing happens.
When I access the sound option there is a green 'equalizer bar' which goes up and down to tell music is playing...but I can't hear anything.
I have checked and mute is not selected-volume is set to 100%.
I opened the machine and behind the jack plug seems to be closed with no removable parts.
I downloaded the latest Audio Driver from Dell but it says its not compatible with my OS.

I think I've covered everything I've done.

A:Dell Dimension 3000 No sound but everything installed correctly.

I forgot to mention that when I connected the external speakers there was no option to select them in Audio Manager.

hi peoples

i have installed my media centre for the 3rd time in a month. Due to various issues. (1 being sleep) Now i have installed the same drivers as the first build for HDMI audio and video, which i had perfect dvd playback and tv on, however i am faced with errors about video drivers not properly installed.

Last time it was the HDMI driver which i have installed and reinstalled 3 times. It seems every time i follow the exact same process at rebuilding vista 64 i get a different result.

Is there a way you can reset media centre so it checks the drivers all over again. I am interested in resetting audio and video if possible

Hi, audiophile, and welcome to the forums.

It would help to know your Graphics card and setup - I have installed Vista Ultimate x64 twice - once for testing, and then a format and reinstall as I changed the partition setup - since then (2 months now) I have not had a single issue with WiMP / WMC.

Hello, to whom ever may be able to help me..

I have posted on this site previously regarding troubles with a printer, which were sorted thankfully.

Now, I'm having another kerfuffle.. I've had a hard-drive go bad on me afew days ago and luckily I had one kicking about, already with XP and everything, so was good to go.
Well, I loaded it all up fine, everything seemed to work as it should.

I only noticed, there was a hiccup when I opened iTunes and tried playing music.. there was no sound

I checked the "Device Manager" just in case there was an out of date driver or something like that, but all seemed well.

I've been trying all kinds of different steps for the past few days, finally decided, enough was enough, I really don't know what is the issue here

I'll explain abit more, I have the little sound icon in the right hand side on desktop and when I checked the properties, I got "This device is working properly" I can click the desktop icon to get the volume control up and then double click to get the master volume control, but that's about it.. I checked that none were muted and they werent.

All I literally did was switch the hard-drive over and that's all, never tampered with anything else inside, or any other kind of settings. Beforehand, just before it failed, the sound was working fine with the other drive.. I'm genuinely lost.

If anyone can give me any kind of tips/guidance, I'd really appreciate i... Read more

Hi everyone, I'm running Windows 7 build 7000, and I have an ASUS P5P 800 motherboard that has an onboard sound device. After connecting to the internet, Windows Update installed 'Sound MAX Integrated Digital Audio' drivers, and the sound icon appears in the bottom right of the task bar.

The problem is that audio doesn't work (and flash games and videos are very slow, could that be a side effect of no audio?). Windows media player doesn't play sound files either, and clicking on the 'Web Help' button on the error message takes me to:
Microsoft Windows Media - Web Help
But my sound device is enabled and drivers are installed.

Also, if I right click on the sound icon in the task bar and go to 'Playback Devices' -> 'Properties' -> 'Advanced' and try to play a sound at any quality level, I get an error too.

Thanks in advance for your help!

A:No sound with P5P 800, drivers installed

Go to control panal -> Device Manager -> Sound, Monitors,...-> and see what you got. Right click and hit update drivers.

Chances are that wont work. I Have an asus and it didnt work for me so I went right to asus.com and downloaded thier drivers. I said I had x64 vista and nothing came up, changed to x32 and I downloaded the sound drivers from thier. The drivers installed fine on my Win7 and I restarted and Boom, sound worked.

I just bought a brand new hard drive the other day, with a new xp cd.

XP home installed perfectly, or so I thought. No sound will play, whether it be from an mp3/video/cd. The soundbar moves, but nothing comes from the speakers.

I went to add new hardware and found these drivers were not installed;

Multimedia audio controller
Video controller(VGA Compatible)

I followed the steps to install them but no drivers were found. I thought they should be on the XP cd? The sound was working perfectly on previous installations, XP and SuSe, yet not on this.

The only sound card is what came with my package and has never been upgraded/changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Just installed XP and sound not working.(drivers)

If they are not on the XP Installaion disc ( and that is not too uncommoe ) you can go to the motherboard manufacturers website and download the drivers for the video and sound card.
Actually, if it is nVidia or ATI . . you can download their drivers and be that much better off.

Let me begin by thanking all who respond with assistance to my problem. I run windows vista ultimate and have never gotten sound to work on this computer. I have had some success with some suggestions I've read on previous posts. At first it was saying "no audio output device is installed". Thanks to some of the people here I have corrected that issue. I now have an audio device installed and functioning.....or so it would seem. I have a simple headset with microphone and I open the sound tab and look at the playback devices and it tells me that there is a digital output device (SPDIF) there and working. A 2-high defintion audio device. I click the recording devices tab and it tells me my microphone is not plugged in (it is guys and girls). The problem is I have no sound coming through the headset.

Let me eliminate some possibilities for you. Sound is not muted, I am plugged into the proper jacks on the back of the computer (not USB), my soundcard is an on-board foxconn. I want to say that my card is fuctioning and the drivers are up-to-date and maybe some of the information I have provided may assure you on whether that is indeed the case. I have checked my BIOS and haven't found anything to indicate that it wouldn't be loading, especially since the device manager reads my "high definition audio device". One last thing to eliminate is that there are no question marks or exclamation points next to the sound card in the device... Read more

Hi all,

I recently reinstalled Windows 7 on my laptop and since then the osund quality has been truly awful.

The specs are listed below, but I have un- and reinstalled the latest realtek drivers. The laptop was new when I wiped it so I don't know if the speakers are just terrible but it's a new laptop, so I assume that's not the problem.

Any help welcome!

A:Bad sound quality, have realtek drivers installed.

I would have very low expectations for sound quality on an Acer laptop.

Having said that, where did you get the Realtek drivers?

If you got them from Realtek, instead go to Acer and look for drivers for your particular motherboard.

And vice versa.

Normally, I would expect the laptop manufacturer's audio drivers to have a better chance of working.

I can not seem to find the right driver for 64 bit. Have tried a couple of downloads but they just gave me an error. I have disabled the on board sound and this was infact done about 6 months ago. I rechecked the bios and it is still disabled. The error i am getting is
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.
I have no other sound devices listed and onboard has been disabled....Hope someone can help.

As a side note it is NOT a sound blaster LIVE

It's probably the lack of x64 driver that is causing issues I would guess?

Please take a screen capture image of the relevent device under Device Manager, as shown in the image below. Does it show up? Does it have a yellow exclamation mark under it? Is your on-board sound card still shown?

Also try this : Download Speccy and run it. Click the Audio section, and take a screen capture of that and post it here too please.

I've been having issues since February's windows updates with crackling sound typically in DirectX games and some video playback such as Steam. In an effort to isolate the problem out I've gone over all my drivers and dust contamination yet again this month. I removed both the 3.51 and 4.01 Klite packs and the VLC player I had been using. Registry cleaned and defragged.

My sound card is an Audigy Fatality champion series with the front panel breakout box.

June 3 2009 driver for it #

Dxdiag attached as well.

Next on my list is to see if maybe there's new drivers for my tv tuner capture board which does have sound card resources apparently.

As a side note, I use Ventrilo daily. When ever I launch it after a fresh reboot and connect to a server it locks the PC up for like 90 seconds before behaving normally and displaying the MOTD. It's done this for maybe 6 months. Whenever I have bad game problems I can generally disconnect and reconnect from the vent server without that little annoyance. I want to lay the blame at DirectX, but I've tried several forced updates of it without any improvement.

Playing in the APB beta as well, and thru tips from those players disabled multimedia network throttling in the registry which improved in game performance there a ton.
I really do not want to reload this machine as it takes an eternity to get everything back the way I like it.

Hey everyone,

I am running Windows XP Service Pack 3 on an MSI K9VGM-V motherboard. Recently, I removed my video card (ATI Radeon HD 2400) and switched everything to onboard graphics. Sound was working before I removed the video card. I also recently installed a DLINK Skype Adapter which installs a virtual audio device, but I have uninstalled that as well in response to this problem. I uninstalled all the drivers and software for my ATI product (including the ATI HDMI drivers).

To help you out, here are some screenshots to help describe the error I'm getting.

To summarize, I saw on another forum that sometimes the windows audio service is disabled, and enabling it would solve the problem. This isn't the case for me. All the drivers are correct and up to date. And what's even more puzzling is that the computer can see the hardware in the sound manager, but it doesn't see it when I click on the other tabs.

Very strange, any help would be nice. Let me know if you need any other info.

I've looked elswhere, read some more things and solved it! It was the "Enumerator" issue. To make sure you've been following the right procedure checkthis:
1. Chek if PnP SW Enumerator is installed on your machine (Device Manager / System devices) - should be listed there!
2. If it is not there then we will probably solve it!
3. Locate "machine.inf" on your OS, copy it somewhere and modify it (find "ExcludeFromSelect=*" and remove the line or simply exclude it from processing by adding a ";" at the beginning)
4. Check the "machine.inf" file for location where SWENUM should be located (mine was reading: SWENUM.CoInstallers.CopyFiles = 11 ; %windir%\System32)
5. Find "swenum.sys" file on your XP installation CD (mine was in DRIVER.CAB) and copy it to the proper location (I am not sure if it is necessary but worked for me)
6. Go to Control Panel /Ad HW and follow the wizard towards manual selection of device to be added
7. Select Add System device
8. Select Have disk
9. Navigate to changed machine.inf
10. from the list select standard deviecs (in the left list) and "Plug and Play Software Enumerator" in the right list
11. Finish the installation
If it stil does not work reinstall the audio adapters' drivers. It should work now. If it does not, I can't help.

This isn't the first time I have reinstalled windows, and the same happened last time. Unfortunately, I can't seem to fix it this time.

I am using the packard bell imedia 1959 model

Windows XP home edition Service Pack 2
nvidia Geforce 7500LE graphics card
Rio (GA-8TRC410MNF-RH) Motherboard

I believe the sound card is built in, and the drivers being used are Realtek HD audio. I've installed the latest version
Realtek HD Audio 2.11 Driver

I have looked at many solutions concerning the UAA driver, which was also already installed and tried uninstalling both
then reinstalling the UAA driver first but that didn't make any difference.

Look forward to any advice given and thanks in advance!

Hope I gave you all the required information the first time round

A:Reinstalled Windows and installed all drivers, no sound anymore

Hi simsyman,

I think you should repost this in the audio/video forum. I'll ask if it can be moved.

I just reinstalled windows, and tried installing the latest High def audio codec from Realtek and no matter what I do. I just cant get my sound to work.

In my playback devices, it still shows the green bar moving showing that sound should be playing, but i cant hear anything. My sound was working fine last night before I reformatted so I doubt anything went wrong with my sound card.

I've tried pretty much everything..uninstalling all my audio drivers, then reinstalling the realtek high definition audio ones, and whenever i try to install the AC'97 drivers, it gives me an unauthorized vebdir. I've also tried using the CD that came with my motherboard with no luck. and I have also tried the latest drivers from gigabytes website with no luck. Help would be much appreciated as I have NO idea how to fix..
My system specs are as follows:
Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit
Intel core 2 duo cpu
Gigabyte ep43 ds3l motherboard
Gigabyte HD 6850
4 gb of ram

A:Just cant get sound drivers to work

You say the green bar is moving but you have no sound...correct. That tells me that the drive is installed and working but the fault my lie with the speakers themselves. Is the speaker connection fully seated? Is there an external volume knob and is it turned all the way down? Has the volume been muted anywhere? Have you looked in the BIOS at the sound settings and codecs?

I just formatted from XP to Vista and I'm having several problems. First off, I have a Gigabyte GA-K8N-Ultra 9 mobo that uses the Realtek AC'97 audio controller. I can't seem to find any drivers that will work. The windows update thing is totally messed up, it has like 30 or so updates that fail everytime I try to update them. And one of them is the driver for the Realtek AC'97 and it fails eventually after it searches forever. Now I went to the Realtek website, and downloaded ' Vista Driver (32/64 bits) Driver only (ZIP file) '
, which is 6251_Vista_APO.zip, and try to install it. It almost gets done and then it comes up with an error saying something like it's only compatible with Vista/Vista x 64. I will a screenshot soon. I've tried several other driver files and none of them work either. I'm wondering if I need to go buy a new sound card that will actually work with Vista or what. Any help would be appreciated.

I took my hard drive put it into my dads PC
Everything seems to be working fine except the mouse and the soundcard
I have no idea how to fix this and I would really appreciate some help
I have tried a wireless mouse and I have tried a USB mouse
neither of them work
however the USB ports appear to be working for other devices
thanks in advance

A:mouse and sound don't work after I installed my hard drive into my dad's old PC

You didn't say why you removed the hard drive from your computer and installed in your father's computer, and if it's been formatted or still contains the data from your computer

If it contains the device drivers from your computer, and your father's computer has a different sound device, that's likely the reason why it isn't working.

Have you tried using a PS/2 mouse?

I left my computer on while on the pause screen of Fallout 4 and it eventually fell asleep, when I came back a moved the mouse to wake up the computer but nothing happened, the monitor said there was no signal even though no wires were moved. I unplugged the DVI cable and I also had to unplug the wire that sends sound from the PC to the monitor. If I remember correctly I put the sound in last.

The monitor turned on no problem but Fallout 4 lagged heavily for a bit and I noticed there was no sound. The lagging was something I expected, I'm not sure if this piece of information helps, but I did get a message a couple days ago saying my PC had overused memory or something (I think it was related to my RAM) after I woke up the computer when I had Fallout 4 paused and when I saved the game when I had that issue the file was corrupted and I couldn't load that save.

I have tried the typical stuff like restarting, shutting down and checking to update drivers. All the cables are plugged in correctly and none are loose. My PC claims that my stereo and headphones are working perfectly and that isn't true because no sound can be heard whether I am using headphones or I am using the monitor's speakers. I hope I provided enough information for anyone who is willing to help, I won't be able to do anything until the morning because it is rather late here on the East Coast but thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

Hi and welcome.

Have you tried the HP site? Have you googled for example your model + drivers?

How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try ... Read more

Which device you use depends on your setup, for example I use speakers as my device.
To help with drivers I need to know more, which motherboard are you using?
can you post a snip of your Device manager?

Radeon 9600 XT 256MB
160 GB HDD

A:No sound, new drivers didn't work. help!

have you connected the card with all necessary cables to the mobo or the devices? make sure your sound is not disabled from bios or from windows. check to see if the sound is not muted. if its on board, it could mean that you have to reposition some jumpers. i had to on my gigabyte to get the 6.1 to work without sounding like 2.1

I successfully installed a new Western Digital hard drive into my Dell Dimension 8100, which is running Win2k. It appeared to install fine, and the WD software detected it, formatted partitioned, etc. all just fine.

But now my sound doesn't work. I find this very strange. I'm no expert; this HD installation was the most significant thing I've done myself inside my PC box. I know the speakers work fine because I ran some music through them just fine.

I went to the BIOS on first startup after installing the HD and changed a setting for what looked like the hd, something like 'Primary drive 1'. I figured if that was wrong I would've had bigger problems with the hd. Could that have messed up the sound card somehow? I'm 99% certain I didn't change anything else there.

I took a quick look inside the box to see if maybe I bumped the sound card, or accidentally disconnected a cable, but all appears fine. I also checked the Device Manager and it says it is working fine. It's a Creative Audio PCI card. The Windows troubleshooter suggested trying it in a different slot. I think I have one available, so I'll try that.

Apart from that, or if that doesn't work, any ideas where to start testing?

Hello all,

Upgrade scenario:
I upgraded my (ancient) Dimension 8400 from XPSP3 to Windows 8 Pro (32 bit) via a clean install.

Windows 8 Pro installed all necessary drivers except my 16 bit integrated sound drivers (and printer).

Post Installation Activity:
Tried a manual install and received a drivers not compatible warning.
Tried a manual install using the compatibility mode and received the same warning as above.
Note: Even though the driver installation failed, the process did leave all post installation files on my hard drive.

Final Solution:
Went into the device manager, found the flagged media controller, and manually updated the driver by pointing it to the post installation file folder (for the sound drivers). All sound drivers were immediately recognized and all flags were removed. This method of manually updating the sound driver (after a failed normal installation) worked perfectly for me. So, if you are in a similar position, you may want to give my solution a shot before giving up and buying a new sound card.

Good luck!

After the initial upgrade, Windows 8 update found a newer version of my integrated sound driver so I installed it and that worked too!

A:Some XP Integrated Sound Drivers May Work On Windows 8

As Dell does not support later OS' with this "old" legacy model you are limited mostly to the default HD Audio Codec that Windows may install. Some audio functions are handled differently internally in the OS between XP and Vista/Win7/Win8 thus the reason the older drivers do not work (or work properly). If you found drivers that will work you are in the minority. I used to do a lot of support on the Dell users forum and users were installing PCI sound cards compatible with the OS they wanted to use to get sound.

I am running a Dell Latitude c640 with Windows XP and things were going ok with the video until I had to reinstall windows and now it acts like I'm watching a webcast over a dialup connection...VerY BAD. My sound never has worked too great.....I could hear things fine but I need to crank my WMP 11 up to the max and I had to do the same in the Volume Controls (everything is as high as it'll go) and it still wasn't that loud. I thought these problems were because of WMP so I tried quicktime, Realplayer, VLC......and just got the same problem.

I checked the driver download page on Dell.com and tried a sound card driver and to my surprise IT WORKED but then when I rebooted everything froze and the only way to get things going was to do a System Restore I've tried to download other stuff to help me through Dell.com and I make sure to check the compatibility before I do but I still get the same problem. I have tried a program called Driver Genius and download what it recommends but still have a problem with my pc freezing.

Does anyone know what I can do? I am so confused......I have no idea what to do (what else is new?) I keep trying everything I can think of but it just leads me back to do System Restores......Oh what fun!!

Someone Please help me.....I can not live without my music and this is driving me crazy.

A:Can't get drivers or codecs that work so NO sound or video :( please help.
