Preferred Solution: Extracted files on desktop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 HP. It came pre-installed 7-Zip. When I extract it changes the file names automatically upon extraction.

On my old Windows 7 desktop I had WinZip and this never happened. So I purchased and installed WinZip on the Windows 8.1 and the same thing happened, it changed the file name automatically.

I have tried all over the net and on this site to find a solution but to no avail. I also compared WinZip settings on the W7 and I can't really tell if they are the same as it is different on W8.1

My real concern is that when I extract the folder, it changes the files names adding additional characters where there would be spaces and then an extension of numbers.
Windows 7 did not do this at all. Please help!!! How can I turn this off?

I don't know if other people had this problem but I have a folder that I need to extract but apparently when I extract it to desktop, I click on the folder and noticed some files were missing. I check the unextracted folder and all the files were fine.
I realized when I extract the folder to desktop, the files aren't actually deleting because they seem to be there in the unextracted folder but not there when I extract them.
the next thing I tried is extracting one file that gets deleted from that folder into the desktop and then nothing happens. So the main thing is that the files wont extract to the desktop for a weird reason. I use McAfee anti virus and I tried disabling
everything possible from it and extracted the file. But it didn't work; also i'm running Windows 10.
All I know is that this is probably not from my antivirus and it has to do something with the file not being extracted.

Please help me fix this problem ASAP as the internet has no good answers or no answers at all.

I would like to ask how to set WinRAR to exclude files with the exact filenames: 'thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' (without the quotes, ignore case) from being extracted from an archive.

Ex. Files with these filenames should not be extracted:

Quote:
Thumbs.db
thumbs.db
THUMBS.DB
.DS_Store
.ds_store
.DS_STORE

while files with these filenames should be extracted:

Quote:
1Thumbs.db
1thumbs.db
tackthumbs.db
Thumbs.db.txt
Abcd thumbs.db.txt
1.DS_Store
Abcd.ds_store
.DS_Store.txt
Abcd.DS_STORE.txt

In 'Settings->Security->Prohibited file types->File types to exclude from extracting', if I just type in 'thumbs.db .DS_Store' (without the quotes) in the field, will it work the way I described?

Also, does anyone know if WinRAR has a syntax guide for the Prohibited file types list in case I'd like to add more filenames or be flexible with the rules I need?

The reason for this question, is I'd like to not extract unnecessary files from ZIP, RAR or 7z archives in Windows 7 - files like Windows 2000/XP's Thumbs.db file (Thumbnail cache) and Mac OS X' .DS_Store file (Desktop Services Store), while not being too strict and also not extracting files which just contain 'Thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' in its filename.

A:Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

Yes, it should work.

Here is a piece from WinRar 4.0 Help file

Quote:
Files to exclude
File masks and file names to exclude from the archiving operation. Wildcards are supported both in path and name parts of masks. If you need to specify several masks, separate them by spaces. If mask contains spaces, enclose it in quotes. For example, you may enter:

c:\temp\info.txt *.bak *.tmp *\temp\

to skip c:\temp\info.txt file, all .bak and .tmp files, all temp folders and all files in temp folders. You may enter file names manually or use "Append" button to browse for file to exclude.

Detailed information about exclusion masks syntax is provided in description of switch -x. This switch uses the same format of exclusion masks as "Files to exclude" field.

What was the extension of the compressed file and what types of files did it contain?

But it really isn't about the program doing the compressing but the data that is being compressed. Some types of files, such as many image files, are already compressed and any attempts at further compression will accomplish little if anything. Hello. Last year I installed one utility called Wrye Bash used to manage and install mods for the game Oblivion. This particular utility is distributed as a .zip archive, it has no installer. The installation instructions tell to simply extract the archive to the same installation folder where the game was installed. This archive contains folders and subfolders within it. Since July last year, I haven't used or updated Wrye Bash, and 75 new versions were released! Now I'd like to uninstall it first before installing the new version. Uninstalling wouldn't be necessary if the files to be extracted from the new archive overwrote all the files extracted earlier from the old version archive, but this doesn't happen for all the files: some of them are not overwritten. This brings me to this forum.

I'd like to know if there's any way to automatically uninstall (delete) all the files extracted from an archive. There must be a simple way to achieve this I'm not aware of. The hard way would be in Windows explorer to select each and every file in the destination directory which was extracted there from the archive, and then delete them. Is there any easier way to do this? Basically, I wish to know if there's any way to undo the extracting procedure, by automatically removing the files which were extracted to the destination directory.

I was hoping that converting the original .zip archive to a SFX archive with WinRar, I could then use this .exe SFX archive both to install (extract... Read more

To which folder should I extract them?

A:Where Should Icon Packs Be Extracted To?

make a new folder on your drive and name it icons and then when you want to change an icon to one you have unzipped, point it towards the folder you have created "icons"
it's not like Fonts, that has it's own folder - icons are usually associated with the program or app - when you want to change them, you have to tell the program or app where the new icon is that you want to use

Hi All, thanks for reading.
I have this bug type issue, when i extract files from either a .zip or .rar, every now and then when i go to delete the extracted files they appear to stay where they where, be it on the desktop usually or a specific folder, the files however have actually been sent to the bin but they still appear to remain where they were extracted too.
The only way i can make them go away is by stopping explorer in DM and restarting, then the 'ghost' files have gone from the desktop or folder.
I am totally up to date with updates, i ran all sorts of scans but nothing seems to stop this occurring from time to time which is also annoying because it doesn't happen every time !!!

I downloaded a .RAR with a 4 gig .mdf and a small .mds in it, and when I extract either one with WinRAR the files are nowhere to be found, but when I check my disk space I have 4 gigs less free. I tried searching for all files with the .mdf extension, and I tried turning on "show hidden files and folders" in Folder Options, but no luck. I tried three times in a different location each time, but the files are still nowhere to be found and each time 4 more gigs disappeared.

I've tried other .RAR's and they work fine. I have XP SP2. The name of the .mdf and .mds are in Japanese, if that makes a difference, but I have the Eastern Language Pack installed. Does anyone know how I can get my disk space back?

A:Extracted file can't be found, takes up space

i assume you log in as the machine's administrator, so what u need to do is go to control panel, folder options, select the view tab, then uncheck the hide extensions for known file types also uncheck the hide protected operating systems files.

Then do a *.RAR search of files in folders in ur local drives which hopefully will pick it up

In an OpenOffice (version 3) text document it is possible to insert a table containing merge fields that are populated from a relational database.

It is also possible to perform calculations on cells, as in a spreadsheet. That is, a formula editor allows a cell to contain a formula that will display the result of a calculation on two other cells of the table.

This works perfectly with hard-coded data in the cells but I have been unable to find a way to perform calculations on cells containing merge fields representing data from an external source. All attempts to do so have produced an "Expression is faulty" message with no further hint. I have been unable to find anything relating to this in the somewhat chaotic OpenOffice documentation.

The aim is to convert a spreadsheet-based invoicing system to run from a relational database, thus eliminating duplicated data such as company names and addresses, and making integration with other documents using some of the same data easier and more efficient.

Can anyone help, please?

A:Calculating on fields extracted from database in OpenOffice

it may be the imported data from the data base is TEXT rather than a number to calc
in excel you can use =value() to convert a number thats formated as text into a number

I just tested in OpenOffice Calc and it has the same issue

format a cell as TEXT put a number in and it is right justified and will not calc
use =value() to convert to a number

I realise now that Windows Movie Maker can fix this by offering to tilt any movie by 90 degs, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Is there a program that can import the jpgs/audio and magically syncronize the two back into the original movie format???

I'm looking at a windows 10 home machine owned by a 14 year old kid. It has been running slowly and erratically. I looked at his desktop and it seems to show his actual D drive folders on the desktop, along with his shortcuts. In other words, it shows system files like "Program Files" and "Program Files(x86) right on the desktop.

If I open "Computer" I see that the D drive shows the desktop in its root. If I look at the user structure I see nothing under there but I see the normal files that should be under the user scattered about between both the C and d drives.

It seems that something has scattered the files about between both drives and yet it still works, albeit slowly. Does anyone have an idea what might have happened? It seems the best course of action is a complete system reset back to factory specs. I also notice that the C drive is "Drive 1" and the D drive is "Drive 0". As far as I know the drives should be C=Drive 0 and D=Drive 1.

Is there a way to "surgically" straighten this mess out, or is it best to just do a factory reset? Can anyone hazard a theory as to what might have happened?

Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I am no longer able to save individual Remote Desktop Connection files as .rdp files. I am talking about the traditional Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop that was in previous Windows versions, not the

When I try to click on the Save button I get "An error occurred while saving to file"
When I try to click on the Save As button I get "Unable to open connection file" with the file address being where I tried to save it with the file name at the end.
Also when I upgraded to Windows 8, my .rdp files disappeared from my Documents folder.
I need to create different .rdp files for different programs that my employees get into on my server. Now I have to hand type all the info each time into the Programs tap on the Remote Desktop Connection window, because I can't save to an

I like the Remote Desktop App from the Windows store but it won't let me designate specific programs to use using standard dos notation (ie c:\program files\ etc..). It just goes to my server desktop.
I want to promote Windows 8 to my employees but I need either .rdp files for the traditional Remote Desktop Connection or the ability to open specific programs using dos notation in the Windows Store Remote Desktop App.

A:Strange files called desktop.ini on desktop

It's normal, and yes you can delete them, and in earlier versions of Windows they used to stay gone.

But in my case at least, they won't in 8.1. They keep reappearing on restarting.

So what I did was this: Right-click on the desktop and select 'Large Icons'. Then drag the unwanted icons until
they are out of sight off the left of the screen. Reset icon size to 'Small Icons' and you'll never see them again.

They are all old excel and word documents but not sure if removing them would cause an issue

What are they/how are they created?

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and Office 2007

Thanks!

A:What are ~$ files that appear on desktop when hidden files show

As far as I'm aware they are desktop .ini files that are written to the desktop whenever you make a change to the file so that the file/folder remembers the change.

If you delete the .ini file it will return to its default settings.

Is there any particular reason why you want to show hidden files? Obviously, they are hidden for a good reason.

Try this workaround if you insist on showing hidden files:

Enable Show hidden files, folders and drives but make sure that Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) is checked.

This will keep the desktop.ini hidden while showing other hidden files.

Hello,

I have "VMware Player 3.1.5", with a Virtual Machine guest operating system installed to it, which is Windows 98SE.

This is running on the Host operating system, which is Windows 7 Starter, SP1.
I realize that this is an old version of the VMware Player, but would appreciate help.
(I had to choose this version of VMware Player in order to install Win98SE - later versions of VMware Player do not support this Guest OS. The Win98SE is for the purpose of running some old, but still useful, applications
that do not run in the Host operating system Windows 7.)

I can no longer "drag and drop" files / folders into the Virtual Desktop, from the Host Desktop.
I can still do it the other way round.
Until recently, "drag and drop" between the VM installed Guest operating system Desktop and the host real Desktop, worked fine.
This Win98SE guest operating system does not support / is not supported for, the alternative Import method, of using Shared folders.

The antivirus installed to the Host operating system is Avast and I always disable it when using the VM.

When I try to "drag and drop" from the Host system to the Guest VM, there is no error message, but the "read-only" pointer symbol appears (a circle with two "diameter" lines in it) instead
of the usual pointer's "dragging file" symbol, and NO transfer takes place.
I have tried "individually dragg... Read more

They seem to just keep popping up. One box has three.

Here's one with a lock on the icon:

[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21799

[LocalizedFileNames]

Here's another on the same box:

[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

These are annoying and I'd like to get rid of them, if they're just a bunch of redundant muck.

Thanks for any help!

Some of the things on my computer arent working right and my DVD drive will not read cds and my explorer.exe is not in my porcesses list?

HP pavillion dv2000

Vista Home Premium
AMD Turion 64x2

A:explorer.exe not working....{Still to do: Get a copy of explorer extracted!}

I can imagine not much is working right without explorer.
Did you try starting(running) explorer from the task manger and see what happens? (File>>New Task>>enter explorer.exe in run window and click ok).

Its not a cure-all but it will get things functioning from that point forward if that's the only problem.
