Laptop turns off when Battery above 30%

Q: Laptop turns off when Battery above 30%

So HP laptops have a tendency of overheating... and when they do, they power off immediately. This is NOT that issue. When I'm working solely on my battery (no AC charger) My laptop will turn off in maybe 45 minutes... I keep an eye on the battery level and it never drops to below 20% when this occurs. The laptop isn't burning hot and no error/warning messages are displayed (and no beeps).... Just poof power off. Ive downloaded the newest HP support assistant and ran the battery test and it said it was fine.I've tried to the manual calibration (since Support assistant isn't giving me the option to calibrate it) where I do the diagnostic logic (F2) and run the Hard Drive test on Battery until the laptop dies... Plugged in the charger and restarted.. what do you know, battery was at 40%... on the battery battery level button is showing half-charge.... So what do I do when the laptop is saying battery is good - not replace... How do I force that calibration? Something is wrong in that the power is dying half-way through the power cycle. Apprecaite any advice!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Whenever I unplug my computer from its charging cord it automatically turns off. I was having this problem before, but replaced the battery with a brand new one. It was working fine and I broke in the battery by charging and discharging it fully for the first 3 cycles and the laptop was working well without power for the past week since I got it, other than taking a minute or so to respond to me pushing the power on button before working when it was not connected to the cord. Now this morning it switches off whenever I unplug it even though the battery says it is at 100% charge and still charging. But, the light on the side of my power port is on red/orange when I have it plugged in, but only when it's lid is closed and it is fully booted up. I checked on other forum answers and tried changing to different power saving plans and even switching all options to 'never' but nothing has worked.I also looked at the pins underneath my laptop where my battery should go to see if they are damaged. Two of them are on a different angle to the rest but I think this is how the laptop was built anyway? I dont want to move them incase it just makes the situation worse.What should I try next? I would like this fixed ASAP as I need this laptop for school and often don't have access to a power plug in class. Thankyou.

My laptop keeps turning itself of when it is on battery. It lasts about 20 minutes, but is getting shorter everytime.

The battery is not running out- when I turn it back on it has 50% charge normally.

It turns off as if it has no power- no warning, and when I turn it back on it reloads and everything is new, with documents and Internet sessions needing restoring.

How can I fix this? I don't think it is the battery, as it has charge when I turn it back on, and it only has 20% wear.

A:Laptop Randomly Turns Off When In Battery

Welcome to TSG!!

If it's truly random, it won't be the Power Management settings. Some laptops have a utility that enables you to "calibrate" your battery. It will fully charge, then fully discharge the battery, perhaps more than one cycle, to allow the laptop to "learn" the battery's capabilities and characteristics. Check and see if you can find such an app. Different manufacturers will give it different names. Also, check their Web site to see if it is a separate download.

1. Laptop turns off without any warning, when the battery is low. There is no "low battery" indicator or anything of that sort. The laptop just turns off. This has been happening for over one and a half months now.2. The battery also lasts lesser time than what the battery indicator indicates (MUCH lesser). It has been a little over 2 years now since I purchased this laptop. Ofcourse it depends on my usage. But the battery indicator should suggest reasonably sensible "lasting" time right?

Ok I think I finally figured it out by changing the power options and I think the way you told me to reset the battery also helped. here are the settings: reserve battery level (this is when the popup will come up.)10% low battery level (this is when the low battery action will be performed.)8% critical battery level (my comp would die at this point.)7%  low battery action: sleep, sleep (customize this to your liking.) low battery notification: on,on (keep this on.) critical battery action: sleep, sleep (my comp would die already at critical.)

I have a gateway m-6851. I bought this battery 2 months ago. This just started happening today. My laptop is running fine, I unplug it to move it. I assumed it went to battery power, but nope. It turned off. This happens 100% of the time. I've tried reseating the battery twice. Windows 7 reads it at 100% with no problems. any ideas?

I don't know that much about hardware, but is there maybe some setting thats messed up. Such as a setting that tells windows to switch to battery, or try to switch to battery, because windows reads the battery just fine.

Hey there,
I've been using my upgraded Inpiron 17R SE happily for a couple of years by now. I've even gone as far as buying an 128GB SSD to futureproof it. This is the only drive - besides the DVD drive - currently present in the laptop. However I've had an issue for quite a while:
Whenever I try to boot the Laptop only using the Battery (even fully charged) it Posts then loads Windows and turns of just before the Login-Screen (I can't see it). When I proceed to turn it back on, it Posts then beeps and says that there is a Real Time Clock Error and gives me the option to proceed booting or to enter Setup.
This however doesn't occur when using the Power-Brick. Moreover it isn't always the case. Sometimes the Laptop boots and works fine just using the battery, but then upon opening a Programm (while under battery-power) it shuts of and gives the same error message again. If it decides to work the battery still lasts for 2-2.5 hours.
I'm really confused to what the problem is. It could be a power delivery problem, but it's still the original battery and laptop with only the HDD changed to a SSD.
I'm aware of it being a rather old machine, but selling it is my only hope for getting a new laptop for college, but I can't sell it in this state.
I'm at a lost and really really sad because of this issue. I'm sorry for any typos or grammar mistakes, I'm a non native english speaker.

Hi, There seems to be a problem with the power management on my T570. I have two batteries, and I think the main one to be used is the battery 2. Sometimes, I'll be working unplugged, and my computer randomly turns off. Not the usual "Windows turning off" sequence, but an immediate blackout with no feedback. When I turn the computer back on, I see that Battery 2 is at 0% and Battery 1 is now in use. It does seem to be a problem in the power management, no? Thank you,Fred

Hey, I really need help. I'm having problems with my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 7559 and was bought around January. Recently I have seen that the battery has no longer been as hot as it used to be when I first started using it. Along with the sleeve on the tip of the screen power adapter (below the part where the adapter lights up) has started to come off, exposing the wires. The battery has continually dropped down its percentage rate ever since I bought it, and it won't go back up. It is currently at 0% battery life and it says when you highlight over the battery icon ( plugged in, not charging). It also happens to show the BIO setup when I start the computer and shows that the batteries wattage and type cannot be determined. In the BIOS setup, the ac adapter type is unknown. The battery has not been through any harsh conditions along with the laptop. I have tried removing the battery, starting up the computer with the ac adapter (which is 130 watts), then adding the battery back, and ac adapter, then turning it on, but it had no effects. If I remove my ac adapter while my computer is on ,it instantly turns off. If someone can support me with this issue, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello guys and girls,

I have an issue since some times that I really don't know how to solve.
In November 2013 I bought in Poland, where I live, a nice TOSHIBA SATELLITE L50-A-16Q (PSKJNE).
On this computer, although, something is constantly causing me problems: *very often the power shuts down suddenly while on battery*, even if the app "TOSHIBA PC health monitor" which also monitors CPU temperature, does not show any sign of criticality.

However, there is something abnormal going on: I have noticed thanks to this software that, every time I unplug the charger, the fan speed goes to zero, apparently putting the system cooling at risk. And I know from the manual that if the processor temperature reaches a critical level, the system automatically shuts down.

Is there anyway to fix the problem in order not to shut it down suddenly, making me lose data while on battery?
Maybe turning on fan speed, somehow, while on this mode?

Thank you every one very much for your contribution, in advance.

Kind Regards,

A:My Satellite L50-A-16Q turns off suddenly while on battery

Hi Matteo

On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there. It would be interesting to know exact battery capacity when this happen.

Using advanced power options you can change many important values so I recommend you to test all this. Try to use notebook with power saver power plan and lower CPU activity.
I don't know if the CPU or any other hardware component reach critical temperature level but please be careful how do you use your machine. Cooling fans must be free and your notebook must be able to ?take a breath?.

Try to test usage with different power plans and using it on the desk only, not placed on the knees or your bed.

By the way: cooling fan activity can be defined in advanced power settings > Toshiba power saver > cooling method. Check it out.

I have an XPS 15z. About a month ago the battery stopped charging and after some quick googling I determined it was likely a charging jack problem. So I ordered a new one from Dell via Amazon (my laptop is several years old and no longer under warranty), and in the meantime used another laptop. Today finally had free time to install new charging jack.
Good news - the new jack works! Bad news - the laptop will only turn on if the battery is disconnected. If I try to power on with the battery connected, the charging light on the laptop flashes red (usually signals low battery/not plugged in), the laptop makes a brief startup noise, and then dies. This happens even with AC adapter plugged in. With AC adapter plugged in but no battery the laptop turns on normally. I've tried discharging static (unplugging battery and adapter and holding power button for 10 secs) but this does nothing.
Any ideas? Would a connected dead battery prevent the laptop from powering on? Did not using the laptop for several weeks do something to the battery? Any help/suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Hello,  I've had a problem with my 500-14ISK where the screen will instantly turn off when running on battery. This happens in the bios and withing the OS.  As far as I can tell it is not just dimming the screen/backlight. It is slowly driving me mad not being able to move around with a laptop. So far I have tried the following.  Reinstalled Windows 10Updated Intel and Nvidia driversUpdate Intel ME softwareReinstalled latest bios (D3CN35WW)Rolled back to all previous available bios versions (D3CN28WW, D3CN34WW, D3CN35WW)Downgraded Intel & Nvidia driversDowngraded Intel ME SoftwareBooted to Debian live disk to test same behaviour. Tried a different chargerSearched the many forums posts with people that have similar issues, saying to try a linked Intel ME version or trying new windows profiles even though this happens outside of windows. Let the battery die completely Turned on conservation mode for the battery with the AC plugged in. The screen then turns off as it tries to run off battery.Ran the Lenovo system update toolsRan the Lenovo diagnostics tools. All OK.Searched the Lenovo Reddit subreddit to see other people with similar problems and no answer. Have I missed anything?  I can't believe support for a product can just blankly end like this when it can be seen that a continued number of people are having a problem with the laptop which still falls within EU warranties.

This problem started 3 weeks ago.

When battery charge reaches 100% the AC LED indicator is turned off and the laptop runs from battery (decreasing it's performance even selecting High Performance power plan).
If the AC plug is disconnected and reconnected the AC LED indicator is turned on until battery is fully charged again, as soon as the battery is fully charged windows battery notification icon changes from "99% available (plugged in, charging)" to "Fully Charged" and then the AC is turned off and the laptop starts to run from battery again.

I didn't update any laptop specific software nor BIOS.

Hello, Two weeks after my one year warranty was up my laptop started shutting off when the battery was around 30-40%.  I checked the battery using the HP Support Assistant Diagnostic Check and it continues to say the "Primary battery is OK."  I've also noticed that since this started happening the battery won't fully charge.  It only charges to 90-94% then shows "94% available (plugged in, not charging)."  I used to unplug the battery until the battery saver (set at 20%) would turn on then I'd fully charge it and repeat.   I use my laptop for work so I'm usually plugged in 8-14 hours a day for five days a week.  I shut it off every night as well.  Am I missing something or is this the battery life I should get?  Did I use it too much?  I purposefully got a long life battery because for work. I found the article below which sounds similar to my situation and wanted to ask anyway. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Pavilion-15-notebook-sudden... This is my first HP and I didn't have battery issues like this with any previous laptop doing the same amount of work/usage for at least 2+ years.  Is this the way HP's are?  Am I supposed to expect this type of performance out of my laptop? Thanks for any help/suggestions/words of wisdom.

Dear all,
Few months ago, my laptop got an issue with OEM battery and it was out of warranty period.
I bought a new alternative battery and installed it to my laptop. I ran all diagnostics and there were no problem found.
At full charge, I unplugged the AC power and my laptop turned off randomly.
I tried to turn it on again, it only loads until Windows log-on screen and turned-off.
I started again in Set-up mode on battery and ran diagnostic from DOS environment, there were no problem detected.
Again, started Windows normally, but it turned off at Windows log-on screen.
If I connects it with AC power, I will see battery at more than 95% or even full-charge.
Do you have any idea or suggestion to solve this problem?
I am using the Windows Fall creator update with a new installation.
Hope to have your help! Many thanks!

Hello, For 2-3 weeks my laptop has been turning off with 30-50% battery left.  As soon as it is plugged in, I have no problems. While attempting to turn the computer back on (before I plug it in) the computer usually shuts down before I get to the login screen.  On a few occasions, however, I have succesfully logged in and started my web browser before it shuts down again.  Every time that my computer dips into this margin, it kills all proccesses (unexpected shutdown).  I have tried different power options, but they just delay how long the battery stays above 30-50%. I do not know of any other details.    Thanks for readingIsenfireLDC

I have my C930 without battery (dead) and i work plugged in, but when the fan turns on the C930 turns off. I think the cable-charger or USB-C is not enought to keep on C930 when the fan is turn on. Is there any way that the device without a battery (dead) can stay on, without turning off when the fan is turned on?  Is another more powerful charger needed? Would a USB 3.1 charger be more powerful than the one the C930 brings by default (USB-C)?

I have a HP Probook 4730s and it has an i7 processor, 8gb ram, 700GB HDD. I have this new software program called Corel Videostudio Pro. I am in the middle of rendering a large 20GB HD video and all of a sudden the computer shuts off. And the weird thing is that I cannot turn it back on, even when plugged in. I can only turn it back on when I remove the battery and replace it.
What can I do to finish this rendering of my video without the computer shutting down?

A:Computer turns off, can only turn on when battery removed and put back in?

Install this software CPUID Hardware Monitor and check your system temps when you are rendering the video, I suspect an overheating issue.

I've had this computer for less than 3 months and the battery as the title says has stopped recharging and unless the computer is connected to mains it won't stay on.
I've heard quite a few other people have the same issue, Did anyone find a solution?

A:Dell XPS 9550 - Battery at 51% not charging, if not connected to power turns off

What is the status/color of the Power and battery-status light ? Solid Amber ? How about the Indicator light on the AC adapter?  Solid / blinking white light ?

I have a Mini-Notebook, NB500-108, running Windows 7, and it never had battery issues until now.
For some reason, battery stopped charging at 99%, then at 98% and now at 97%.
Tray icon says "plugged in, charging" but it never reaches 100%.

Besides that, the led light never changes from orange to green, like it used to do before.
That is annoying because I can't see if battery is totally charged when the machine is turned off.

I've already tried a lot of suggestions in order to recalibrate battery:
1. Flashing BIOS;
2. Uninstall/disable Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method in Device Manager;
3. Full discharge/full charge;
4. Half discharge/full charge;
5. Removed the battery and pressed power button for 10, 20, 30 seconds...;
6. System restore;
7. Same beahaviour with a Linux live pen.

None of this worked. Any comments on this, Toshiba Support?
Thank you in advance.

Toshiba Support? This is a user-to-user forum dude? you will get some comments from community members ;)

I think it could be a faulty battery?since lithium batteries would start losing the own performance after being charged for 400-500 times, I would assume that your battery is affected? it?s just a theory but I think it?s worth to test a new part

Hello, I have a 3 yr old Ideapad Z510(that came with Win8)which worked absolutely fine until recently. If I plug in the charger when the laptop is on, it abruptly turns off and would never boot again until I remove the charger. However, this is not how it behaves every time. There are some rare instances where I could still operate the machine with charger plugged in.  When turned off, battery is charging and also goes to full 100%. When turned on(battery mode) it does not drain rapidly - I could still get a fairly decent stand up time. So I am assuming the battery is good. I don't see any thermal issues either. Things I tried:-------------- > Tried with a different charger - no help.> Updated the firmware - no help.> Update the entire driver pack - no help.> Applied windows patches, reinstalled and also upgraded windows to Win 10 - no help.> Reseated the battery and associated cables - no help.  I am not sure if there is anything that I could do to at least diagonize the problem before I give it to the service station. Any pointers on this is much appreciated   Thanks much in advance.

On a few previous occasions, while running my Lenovo Thinkpad T480 running Windows 10 (10.0.17134 Build 17134), it shuts down without any prior notice nor warning, loosing any unsaved data. Each time it occurred, the machine started up just fine when powering on, still on battery only.It wasn't until today that I came to learn the reasoning. Prior before the unexpected shutdown, I had seen that Battery 1 was at 5%, and Battery 2 at around 80%. Minutes later, the laptop turned off without any warnings. Once rebooted and still running on batteries only (not plugged in), the battery status shows: Battery status after rebootIn other words, my laptop does not switch over to the secondary battery as soon as the first one runs out of juice. I have searched the forums but could not find any previous reporting of the same, so any advise how to troubleshoot this behavior? I'd really like to get this fixed as each time this occurs, I risk loosing any unsaved data.

when the laptop was new , I never saw the option to go for batteray conservation mode ( was windows 7 then ) ; the laptop used to sense it's plugged in all the time , a pop up came to accept battery saving mode - things were good.I upgraded to windows 10 64 bit & things remained good : " battery conservation mode work ".Lately , it stopped - I turn it on , it turns itself off ( from Lenovo vantage ) ! what to do ? I redownloaded the original power managment driver , & many other things , no use :-(
