T570 performance issues with Excel VBA

Q: T570 performance issues with Excel VBA

I've experienced very annoying issues with VBA excel programs from the purchase in May 2017. When I launch a long procedure in VBA, it starts' ok utilizing up to 50% of CPU for a few seconds, than CPU utilization drops down to almost 0% and stay there for very long time. Not sure the reason, I believed it's something related to CPU temperature but it's probably not; the very same procedure run ok on my older T540p and on my desktop PC (which had the same problem which was solved by an update of BIOS of MB Asus z170 pro gaming). My T570 has i7-7500U, UHD, 512 NVMe, 8+8 GB. Is one else having the same problem? ps. I also had the problem of heavily degraded performance when running on battery and without Internet connection, which seems to be common, but that looks like solved recently with Power Management update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I've purchased new Lenovo ThinkPad T570 with the following specs: CPU i7 7600UGPU 940MX32Gb RAM1Tb SSD PCIe (Samsung PRO 960)"15.6UHDLTEBatteries: 32Wh 4Cell Li-Ion front battery + ThinkPad Battery 3 Cell Li-Ion (24Whr) - up to 13.5 hrs according to OEM System setup: Win10 x64- All unnecessary apps are off/deleted (all background apps disabled)- No resource-consuming apps running (Skype and that's it)- Visual Windows effects are turned off- All possible background Windows services (such as error reporting, Cortana and etc. are off). I did not touch any services through msconfig though, they are at defaults.- Power type: Balanced- Screen brightness at 95%  What I am experiencing from time to time is dimming screen (Power Options -> Advanced Settings -> Display - > Enable adaptive brightness is both OFF (on battery and plugged-in). 1. What can be the cause for dimming? 2. Other question - battery is holding maximum 5.5-6 hrs (no resource heavy tasks, only browsing, 1080p videos on youtube). How to optimize that? 3. Windows update or simple JAVA setup can trigger fan to start working heavily blowing basically cold air - very annoying. All newest drivers are installed. BIOS is updated to the latest version. Feedback is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Issue is with an Excel document that runs a macro to report information from another data sheet:
Raw data - 3MB
Macro - 8MB
Result file - 120MB
When the macro is complete;
1. The document shows an error when trying to save (see screenshot with error) -- Black icons show within the save window (see screenshot).
2. Copying small amounts of information takes around a minute or longer.
3. Switching tabs sometimes does not change the information on the screen (current tab stays the same but the bottom button doesn't).

Tried the following:
Office 2013 St - downgraded to 2010 to test. No change.
Tested Excel doc on another laptop (identical spec) and saw no issues.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Ok well it has been a while since I posted requesting help in here. I suppose that could be considered a good thing... Anyway I checked the "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using HijackThis and Other Malware Removal Tools" thread just to double check the proper way to post in here and noticed you guys mention to use a program called "DDS". I have never used this in the past, I have always only used HijackThis but I will, for the sake of covering all my bases, included both the DDS files and the HijackThis report.Ok on to the problem at hand. I will list the problems as I remember them in the order of when they happened (hopefully, knowing my memory...) starting with the more recent problems. (1.) What has happened recently is I have noticed that my processor has been maxing out at 100% doing things that would normally not require more than maybe 20% of the processor. (2.) I have recently done some fairly major creation/deletion/moving of files in hopes of lowering the amount of junk on my computer. I have also run a defragmentation on my hard drive but it is hard to tell if it really worked because whereas in Windows XP the disk defragmentation tool gave you the ability to analyze your hard drive and then actually watch the progress as it defragmented the hard drive, Windows Vista only gives you the ability to "Defragment Now" and then all you can do to tell whether or not it is done is to stare at the little 'Vista ... OK so my computer is acting up. Two weeks ago while browsing suddenly i get error messages concerning dns failed something probe. Ever since, when i open a new link it takes almost 20-30 seconds to open the page...
When i want to view a new video on youtube, it takes alot of time concidering i have 75/75 up/down
Its not the download speed, once i get a connection it works fast, but still not as normal.
Also now ive started getting sound stuttering/lag in the video.
Today even the mouse curser lags behind the movement of my mouse and then quickly squirms around the screen catching up all the movement i did.
Does this have something to do with my SSD starting to fail?
Is there some virus hijacking my resources?
Are my drivers bad?

A:Stuttering, performance issues, internett connection issues

Hello and Welcome ..

Does this have something to do with my SSD starting to fail?
Is there some virus hijacking my resources?
Are my drivers bad?

We can try to briefly check these with the following methods, or use stronger programs if required..

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. This gives a preliminary reading, and clears your Antivirus/Antimalware programs.
You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash for a minute or so, and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until you run the next few tools.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with Rkill log.
Post it in your next reply.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

Greetings, I just switched my main computer from XP Pro to (in a different HD) Vista 64.
One of the reasons for the switch was that I had purchased the computer with 8GB of RAM and I wanted to see what kind of performance I could get from it.

These are my specs:
Computer Systemax
Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz (2397 MHz)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista x64
8GB of RAM (4 when I extracted these specs - I was testing to see performance)
DirectX version: 10.0

Realtek Winfast PX8600 GT HDMI(NVIDIA)
GPU processor: GeForce 8600 GT
ForceWare version: 162.22
Total av. graphics mem.:2014 MB
Dedicated video memory: 256 MB

As far as the performance issue, I am afraid I am not seeing a definite increase in performnce comparable to the XP Pro installation with just 4GB (3.25 to be exact, due to XP utilization of memory)

I am starting to woonder if there is something I can do to increase the system performance otehr than the obvious (Take out Aero, etc.) It's not the the computer is slow in handling programs, but some interface activities, such as opening and closing folders and windows, launching programs, etc. Are as fast or slower than on the XP OS.

Most recent problem:

It's actually hard to explain precisely what is going on, but I'll try my best.

With a frequency of about 4 times a day and with no apparent cause, the screen will go black. Open windows and the desktop below will flash on and off and if I move the mouse arrow ov... Read more

Performance is an elusive issue in higher end computers such as yours.First tho' - Most likely your graphics drivers are a tad bit corrupted, and the following will help to update them:Download the latest forceware drivers for your OS and video card (according to what I read, these are the most current: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_169.25_whql.html )Uninstall the nVidia stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program.Uninstall the video card from Device Manager (go to Start and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter)Reboot and dismiss any "Found New Hardware" dialogs.Double click on the freshly downloaded drivers and follow the prompts. In most computers the big 3 performance issues are:- the hard drive- the RAM- the CPUSo, that's the first place to check. Luckily Vista has a number of tools to help with this. The first is Task Manger (right click on the Task Bar and select "Task Manager". Scroll through the tabs to see what's going on inside of your system.Next, go to Start and type in "compmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then start looking at this stuff (it's listed in the left hand pane):- Event Viewer...Windows Logs...both the Application and System logs- Reliability and Performance...Monitoring Tools...both the Performance and the Reliability monitors- Device Manager- Disk Management- Services and Applications...ServicesWhat are you looking for? I have just 'upgraded' from excel 2003.

I find that copy/paste of charts and resizing/redrawing of charts to be very slow (2-5 secs) in excel 2010. In excel 2003 these operations appeared to be instantaneous.

Is this normal? Is there a way to speed this up?

System: i5 750, 4gb ddr3, hd5850

If this is the standard level of performance, why would anyone use this product over openoffice?

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

I suspect it might be the add-ins that is causing the problems.

Open Excel | Go to File | Options | Add-ins |

In the Add-ins box, identify the add-in that you want to enable or disable and note the Add-in type located in the Type column.
Select the Add-in type in the Manage box and then click Go.
Select or clear the check box for the Add-in that you want enable or disable and then click OK.
I would recommend to disable all non Microsoft add-ins
If you find difficulty doing that use this utility to disable them OfficeIns: Office Addin Manager (Enable/Disable Outlook/Word/Excel Add-Ins)
Good Luck,

I have an HP Pavilion laptop that I bought in 2006. From time to time over the past year or so I've had problems using Excel 2003 and the computer itself. I've been able to rectify these problems in the past to some degree by running Norton, as I have this time. Nothing has improved. The Excel problems are worse than they've ever been.

Let's start with a problem that is common to both the computer and Excel. At times when I move the cursor around on my desktop screen, a line that looks like a thread will appear and connect the cursor to a random fixed point on the screen, so that no matter where I move the cursor, I can't get rid of this line. The "line", depending on where I move the cursor, can also become a highlighted area, which turns my icons a shade of blue if I pass the cursor over them while this "line condition" is happening. I finally figured out that I can get rid of this line after a left click....or two or three. Then it comes back. Whatever is going on is also causing my e-mails to be sent without me clicking "send". If I were to try to insert the cursor into this message I'm typing now...to add or delete something, the entire word next to the insertion point becomes highlighted....upon another click, the entire paragraph is highlighted. A third click finally enables me to do what I want in the body of the text without something being highlighted and possibly being deleted by an errant click. There are also times when I get no r... After several failed attempts to get all three files together on this e-mail using internet explorer, I was finally able to accomplish the task on AOL.

On internet explorer was I was able to attach the zipped attach.txt and ark.txt files, but when I went to copy and paste the DDS.txt contents, the entire e-mail would disappear and a Google screen appeared and told me I was logged out.

As they say, you can't make this stuff up. My HP was acting so unstable after my first couple of attempts that I finally decided to shut it down and restart. When I did, a file named OIS.EXE popped up.

Anyway, let me send this off before my computer "explodes" : )

Thanks in advance for all your help.

A:Sluggish Computer & Excel Performance [Moved from XP]

I had to retype this e-mail when I originally posted it from my errant HP last night. The text suddenly turned blue from being unintentionally "highlighted" and disappeared with a single keystroke. Edit/undo did not bring it back.

What I also wanted to add here is that when I go into "my documents", a light blue "dot" appears on top of the small icon of any file that is either Adobe, Word or Excel. These "blue dots" do not appear on top of zip files (or any file with a manila folder for that matter) The blue dot seems to be "targeting" primarily files of commercially available programs.

Then I just noticed now, in looking at my desktop, where I store some documents under all three of the above software programs, that these "blue dots" appear larger, along with the file icon itself. In their larger form they are now "blue squares", sitting in the lower left corner of each file icon. Notepad files also are partially obscured by these blue squares. Within this "blue square" are two white ">>" symbols.

Interestingly, I just noticed "something blue" on top of the new 7-zip file software icon I downloaded last night to send the "ark" and "attach" files here. On top of the 7-zip Icon is not a small blue square but a somewhat larger blue circle, almost completely covering the 7-zip icon. Within the blue circle is a single white down arrow. These blue &... I'd like to have a function or macro that takes weights of multiple securities in the portfolio (sheet "Portfolio1") and automatically compute the performace on sheet "Perf" (yellow column) without having to manually change the function every time the weights change.

There are going to be many securities on the first sheet (think 100 or so) with different weights for different time periods. Both the number of securities and the number of dates with changes in weights is going to increase over time. Cells without weights will be left blank.

Thank you for any suggestions.

How many worksheets?
How many rows of data per worksheet?

Are your worksheets "dirty"?
Check www.theofficeexperts.com/excel.htm for file corruption issues and fixes.

When's the last time you saved the file to a different name; and are you saving it down? Double-check by File-Save as. Make sure you give it a different name, and that it's not saving down to a lesser version. Then save it.

Check File-Properties. Any better?

Hi all,
Been reading posts for a while now and thought it about time I registered and raised a cracking plee..!

I have a spreadsheet showing columns of amongst other things, start dates and finish dates for many tasks rec’d and completed each day, everyday.

The dates are used to show when they were booked in and when they were finished however I need to show how well we are doing in meeting our targets.

Without using pivot tables or autofilters against the data page I need to formulate in another worksheet:
1) a running total of how many tasks we booked in (and thus started) in a certain period, how many were finished in the same day, how many took 1-2 days, how many took 3-5 days, how many took greater than 5.

With this information I will be able to then say whether I am meeting the targets set... eg 90% within 1 day, 95% within 3 days and 99% within 5 days.

Currently I have to add it all up by hand and now we have over 3000 records and the task is getting crazy. I'm sure excel can do it.

The following formula waas given to me by another colleague...

...This answers the first question, by me entering a start and finish date (in Q10 and R10) and the array returns a value relating to how many tasks were opened. Very clever.

But from there to use the same date range of Q10 and R10 to work out the no. of days each individual task was open for, and then to add all these up in the way needed, is WAY beyond me. I am abs... Read more

"Without using pivot tables or autofilters against the data page"

Why? In all honesty, your best bet is a helper column on the data page, but that might be verboten too.

"how many were finished in the same day"

A big question is: if finish date = start, does "days taken" = zero?

"array ... Very clever."

Indeed. And sometimes, very memory-hungry.

With some start dates in A2:A5 and some finish dates in B2:B5,

returns number of tasks started on or after Q10 and finished on or before R10.

returns those "within" the dates that took "zero" days (finish = start).

returns those "within" the dates that took "one" day (finish = start + 1).

And so on.

If this belongs in gaming more so than here, I'm sorry!

I'm running an ATI 5770, an Athlon II 2.8Ghz quad core CPU, and 4GB of RAM. MY PSU is a 550W OCZ Fatal1ty, and I'm on Windows 7 64-bit.

Up until about 2 months ago, everything I played ran fine - specifically, League of Legends and Starcraft II. (NOT demanding games in the least, and other things like BFBC:2 ran great as well)

At some point (not sure when or what I would have changed to caused this) I started getting slowdown - sporadic in LoL, constant down to 40 in crowded settings in SC2. Since then, I've taken all the steps normally associated with this sort of thing; nothing helped so I wiped the HD and re-installed Windows (Win 7) I'm on the latest service pack with all updates, have the latest GPU drivers, and furthermore just pressure-cleaned the case with an air compressor. I've been monitoring heat and my system stays at a constant ~24-27 while my CPU goes up to ~45 if I'm trying to push it.

I've ran diagnostics such as SpeedFan, Memtest86+ and CPUID, checked the SMART values of my HD, and manually measured my PSU voltages under load with a multimeter, all to no avail - I can't find a damn thing wrong with my system.

I'm at complete loss now, and simply have no idea what to check for next. In other forums, one person mentioned that just because my PSU voltages were fine didn't mean my PSU wasn't under excessive stress - are there any more tests I... Read more

Hello there,
I’ve just run a full scan on McAfee and it has come up with 0 issues and did not detect any viruses, spyware, or other threats (attached). Part of me wishes it had as my laptop is really not performing well at all.
I don’t know if it is to do with having too much on it but what is too much? Does too much protection actually impair the performance?
I seem to have more problems with my Thunderbird mail system and not sure that this isn’t affecting everything else. Not only do I not know, but I don’t know much about computers.
It just does seem so slow............................
I have thought about getting the laptop serviced, if such a thing is possible, but I thought I’d come here first, knowing that the answer might well be here within these four walls.
Any help is greatly appreciated, as are any thoughts.
Many thanks

I was kind've unsure where to post this for I am unknown to the problem.

Recently, I reinstalled Vista because the old OS had annoying errors due to uncomplete installs, compatibility problems, etc. Well, all is fine and dandy. I installed my usual programs again, delete the Windows.old folder. Now the issue is my performance. I've made some usual suggestions from PcPitstop Optimize, and various other programs which worked with my old OS.

The problem lies with my internet being slower than usual, computer stalling more when running multiple applications along with skipping music under heavy payload. I recently ran a raid on WoW and actually DC'ed which NEVER happened. Had some unhappy campers... None of these happened with my old vista installation. Am I missing something? Device drivers? Device Mgr doesn't state anything wrong and I've run multiple tests. Anyone have any ideas or tests? Change in router settings with MTU or something?

Also as a side problem, Facebook refuses to cooperate with Firefox by being unable to navigate with links on their page. Therefore I have to use Chrome which has a problem with opening emails with Hotmail. I never had these problems before? I've reinstalled both browsers multiple times.

Thanks for any help.

Hi -- I have recently started having issues with my laptops performance and have no clue what's going on. I did inherit this one from my older brother who is a developer so I know there is a lot installed on here which I don't need...

I've uninstalled all the applications I'm certain I won't be using, but there seems to be a lot of php or .net environment stuff on here that I'm not sure I should touch as I'm uncertain if it's required for something?

Task manager looks like nothing is taking up too much memory or CPU so I'm really puzzled as to why everything is just so slow to respond.

I'm running windows 10 on a 2 year old Alienware laptop (at least I think it's 2 years old), it's a legit copy, there's no CD but I'm pretty sure it doesn't need one - though... I'd love it if I could avoid spending a whole weekend re-installing everything! Thank you in advance for any help or light you can shed.

I note from the task manager that when I have problems "agent.exe" seems to be taking 97% CPU at times.

I also notice from the Hijack list that despite removing Norton from my system. elements of Symantic still remain. Are these a problem & can they be removed?

I have installed IE 11 and its cosuming too much memory. It literally hangs and also make other apps slow. I have tried reinstalling , disabling addons, resetting, using software rendering,  but doesnt seems to be improving the performance. I tried
using IE10 from debugging mode, its fast and fine. So the issue is definitely with IE11. Please assist.

A new issue, when I load Windows, even when loaded all the way. I can not get on the internet. I am currently using a Slackware based Linux Distro, LiveCD to get to the internet (meaning not a hardware problem). Performance on the live CD appears to be fine, a lot faster then in Windows.

Hello there. So when I restore my computer to defaults, which is a dell XPS 8700, 8gb of ram, running windows 7 64 bit,I7 processor, everything is great.
But when I download the updates for windows, and put in the anti virus programs like malwarebytes or avast, download firefox and chrome, and all of the normal stuff for a good user experience; in game performance takes a serious dive. Its definitely what I would call an internet problem, as lag time and stuttering becomes huge. What can do to see whats taking up all of my bandwith, or reducing kbps? I looked at my resource monitor and nothing seems too high, and I went in cmd to look for Trojans but nothing.

Thanks for your time.

Game is Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare on Origin.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Can you provide us with the Dell Service Tag number for the machine, then we can look up the exact specs for it?
Is it all exactly as it came out of the factory or have you changed / upgraded any parts?

If the problem isn't there before you download all the Windows updates etc then it is unlikely to be your internet, as that won't change just because you have updated Windows and/or drivers.

Firefox seems to be slow, but it's not about the connection. Whenever I try to scroll through a web page or type in text in the web page (especially in this thread), there's always this delay. Sometimes it gives the "not responding" statement for a few seconds before it resumes.

I have a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, Geforce 8800 GTS, 320 GB HD, and a Windows 7 Build 7100.

Hello my name is Juli , I am from albania and i have bought a Dell Laptop Inspiron n5010, after 7 years of using him I never had any big problems with performance or something else (even why i tried to install another graphic card and everytime i try i got some errors ) . 4 Weeks ago I broke my batery charger and today i bought a new one that is an offical product . After i turned on my pc I saw that windows 8 was lagging too much so i decide to install windows 7 . After i installed it i see that in my Laptop Rating , Processor have the lowest rating (2.7) and this never happened before . Always my lowest rate goes to graphic card (4.5) but this time my processor is the lowest . My question is what can I do for that ?

(sorry for my bad english )

(Btw i opened this thread in windows 7 section because i am new here I didn't know that there is a section for hardwares)

The title should be "processor issues " but excuse me because i am too nervous right now

Hi -

I recently upgraded my RAM from 120MB to 632MB running of a 1.20ghz AMD Duron processor. This has significantly increased the performance but only after i ran chkdsk /f. Until this point my system would hang up a lot and it would take far to long to perform simple tasks in XP. (you could imagine what it was like working with apps).

Does anyone know how reliable the system performance utilities in Windows are? I seem to get very high readings in there for all the counters. If that is the case then i can't think what hardware i might need to upgrade, my system is:-

AMD Duron Processor 1.20 Ghz with 632 MB RAM
35GB Hard Disk.

Can anyone recommend how i can make it go better or am i over reacting?

Hi. I'm recently completely lost with this weird performance issue of my Asus g73sw. It might have been a couple months since this problem started.

-8gb 1333mhz
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M 1.5gb
-Win7 Home premium x64 (fully up-to-date)

I would like to underline that the issue I'm having occurs time to time, which doesn't let me understand the source of it. I do not change anything but it happens for a while and then it gets back to normal, and so on.

I'm playing a (demanding) game called Hawken regularly, where my laptop gives me quite fine performance, usually a decent 90+/- FPS (on lowest settings). But when this "issue" I've been talking about happens, I get about 40 FPS if not lower. Like I said, it's totally random to me. And it lasts for a few days mostly.

And It's not only low fps, when the computer is running slow; it also gives me kind of sluggish/stuttering/laggy feeling.

It's like, I turn on my laptop and it has a chance to run at the high speed, or the low speed. And I know it will last for a while.

The FPS in that game I mentioned above is not the only indicator of the problem that is there for sure. For example: There also is low speeds on web pages, like when I hover my mouse cursor over some links on a page; they flash with a clearly visible latency where they should be flashing instantly when I hover the mouse over them. Even on my 10 years old computer I was able to do that!

Anyways, I... Read more

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and I am having extremely slow performance at certain times. The performance is usually slowest at startup, when on the internet, and while playing games. Startup procedures may take 10 minutes before the computer is functional, the internet may take 5 minutes to come or never open or the internet will simply run incredibly slowly (this is especially a problem with firefox and when on facebook), and when I am playing games (such as Warcraft III) the computer runs extremely slowly (especially when the internet is running). Sometimes when I minimize a game and try to maximize it will be as long as two minutes to maximize the program.

I recently built a computer with the following specs:

Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz Processor
2GB Ram
Nvidia 8800GTS Video Card (Factory overclocked by BFG)
Intel Motherboard
500GB 7200 RPM HDD

My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium

My issue is that the performance is not what I thought I could expect. Word takes about the same time to load as it did on my Dell E1505 using XP Pro, with a 2 Ghz processor, 1GB Ram... Most games (Call of Duty 2, Prey, etc) will run at max settings smoothly (frame rate ~60-75), with the exception of Halo 2, which tends to have horizontal tears even with lower settings... So for games it is fine. But for some programs - especially iTunes - it isn't that impressive.

Is it the programs? Is iTunes always very slow? For example, it takes it about 7-10 seconds to come up. (Does library size have to do with that?) Also, iTunes always starts with everything black... I have to maximize it and then reduce the window again in order for it to show up right... (UG) (Also can't scroll with the mouse wheel...)
Does Word typically take a while? (As in longer than 3-5 seconds?)

Or am I just expecting too much?

(Virus scans seem to take decades, but I'm guessing that's due to the 500GB HD...[1/2 full])

Hi Rousseau

Vista has a lot of overhead going on by default, and it's suitability as a gaming platform has gotten a pretty cold reception by gaming mags like MaximumPC. Some users have gone the route of keeping XP around via a dual-boot situation, and they game from XP. Performance is usually much better under XP. The DirectX 10 mess didn't help things much with Vista, either.

You can try trimming your optional start programs a little, and turning off your Indexing services (at least during gameplay). If you've several competing desktop indexers (both Vista's native Indexer & Google Desktop, for example) -- make sure they're off while playing.

I think you are very likely correct in your guess that your lengthy virus scans & slow indexing simply reflects the large amount of data involved. If iTunes checks it's library at startup, that would follow too = the larger the library, the slower the iTunes startup.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

P.S. User Account Control seems to add a delay for just about everything --- I'm not in a great hurry most of the time (and I put more emphasis on security than performance), so I leave UAC on. But if you have good protections in place, you could try disabling UAC for a bit, and see if that speeds up a few things - or not.

Hi All

For some reason my laptop has started to crawl... it is really slow and I can't figure out why. When I view the Task Manager and am doing nothing, the cpu is at 20% but as soon as I do anything, the cpu rises to 100% - whatever it is that I do.

If I have a few windows open, the system takes a few seconds to render the page when I flick between these windows. Even firefox takes an age to display the screen which isn't my internet connection but is the laptop performance.

What can I do to determine which application is malfunctioning and eating up my cpu cycles...

My system originally had one 512 stick of unknown origin and two 256 sticks from kensington. I don't know anything else about those RAMs. I just bought a 512 stick from PNY, DDR400, and a gig stick from Centon, also DDR400. I put these two in with my old 512, expecting the huge increase I got when I upgraded my RAM to one gig, but there's been hardly any change. Doom 3 is faster, but the speed is also less constant. Before, the game would slow down a bit coming through doors and such, but now it slows intermittently as if it had a pulse. And Morrowind actually runs slower outdoors, and indoors has some weird slowdowns unlike anything I've seen. Normal slowdowns you feel like you're stuck in mud and the frames come more slowly one after the other. Now I can look around at the same speed, but the visuals get all choppy like cards being flipped to animate something. What's wrong? Is my RAM too cheap? Do I need a better processor? Is my RAM too mix'n matched?

A:RAM performance issues

The RAM doesnt really affect game performance unless there is a compatability problem. Adding more RAM mostly makes the game and levels load faster. Some motherboards dont like it when you mix and match RAM. Also if your old stick of 512mb is PC2100 or 2700 the new PC 3200 RAM will default to the lower speed. It would help to know your system specs.

A:XP Performance Issues

My name is Matt Steckler and I work for Haute Secure. I noticed you were having some performance issues, and saw you had Haute Secure Beta installed.

First, you can try and isolate the problem application by starting Windows XP in a 'clean state' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353), then open applications one-by-one until explorer starts to drag.

The symptoms you are describing are classic GDI starvation where too many windows open at the same time (or more specifically applications trying to draw windows using GDI+) cause the machine to run low on GDI resources and explorer to start to drag. There were some issues in the early beta with Haute Secure on this but they've been solved in a later beta.

So, can you tell me which version of Haute Secure you are running?

You can find out by clicking the Haute Secure icon in the System Tray, choose the computer icon (local) and write down the version number.

If you would like to see if Haute Secure is the culprate, you can download and install the latest beta. For information on this, please visit http://community.hautesecure.com/forums/t/174.aspx.

Please feel free to post any further questions or comments at http://community.hautesecure.com

I am having issues with the performance of my PC and am unsure as to what the problem may be.
I first noticed when playing a pc game - my frames per second were at around 20-40 whereas they had previously been at 120 or so.
I noticed that the system was running a bit sluggish also.

I tried cleaning up everything, uninstalling everything I did not use, defragging, virus and malware checking (Windows security essentials and MBAMM respectively. And finally tried reinstalling windows 7.

On my fresh system I reinstalled all the drivers and updated the graphics driver to the current version.
I then reinstalled the game, and am still suffering the same low FPS.

Thinking it may be an issue with the game (perhaps a new patch messing things up) I have run a benchmark test "performance test" (a free test) and my PC is well under what it should be according to the specs.

Have you any advice on how I can sort this, or what the issue may be?

Thanks so much in advance!

I had to pull the PC by the plug a few times a while back, ever since then, my PC cant play games.

Before the problems, all of my games ran smoother than silk. Now, my games, just seem to get slower as i play them.
They are unplayable in the first place, but i can tell they definately get slower.

I have...
-reinstalled/updated graphics card drivers
-changed my graphics card (i had a 8800GT now i have a 1GB ATI 5770 HD)...
-formatted and installed windows 7
-ran various tests (memtest, various hard disk checking tools) and all of them pass.
-Kept my hard drive in good condition
-reset the BIOS
-Ran 3D mark test - I have 2 1GB sticks of ram in A1 and B1 slots. I took B1 out and 3D mark ran slightly smoother.
Put the B1 chip into the A1 slot on its own, ran slightly smoother. Put both sticks back and it ran even slower.
I wouldnt say there is a dramatic different in speed, but it definately runs slower with both sticks in.

People have said its my RAM, one person said my hard drive. I dont want to buy any new components and find out its not the solution. This has to be hardware, as i have formatted and reset every other setting.

Oh yeah, when i am debuging websites in Visual Studio on my PC, the sites run slower than would they would on the internet...

Can anyone help? Thanks

To All You Win 2k Gurus Out There Reading This.

For the almost non-technical person that I am.....

Can you put me on to some good products that can analyze the performance of a 25 node Win 2k network and either automatically or tell me how to set it up so that the Win 2k Server and The Win 2k Stations are set to their best optimization and their greatest perfomance level????? I seem to have slow network performance levels. Respectively, I don't want to figure out how a sniffer or network monitor works. I just need a software that will give me the end result..... And maybe I will be able to learn from these softwares.....

I would greatly appreciate the expert advice.......

Lately, I have noticed performance issues on my Windows XP Media Center edition. I used to be on XP home, then I decided to try out vista, then from Vista I proceeded into X64, and then now to media center. I had never had any problems like the ones I have experienced lately.. Here's my problem:

I have been experiencing very very slow performance on my computer, but the biggest thing I notice is when I go onto internet pages and try and scroll down. I have a DSL connection and always have a very high connection so it has nothing to do with my internet, I also have other people on the router who have none of these problems, and I also had none of these problems before. As I scroll down on a page it lags the screen and then if I keep going fast it will give a system beep. I am wondering if possibly my processor or ram is messed up, or if X64 bit may have messed up my processor by activating the 64 bit part and now moving back? I have looked all over and found no solution to this problem, please help!!

Make sure you have the newest video drivers to fix your scroll lag problem.

Well, I never thought Id see the day ..

system wont boot up properly, sometimes have to tell it to boot from XP disk which seems to work but Im not sure if its just a matter of it trying to boot several times. Even without the disk, it boots sometimes on its own. Other times ti locks up at the blue MS welcome screen.

When shutting down, I always get the pop up DirectDBNotify which Ive Googled. Ive only found it to be a MS problem not a virus or spyware.

I have up todate trendmicro antivirus and spyware which picks up nothing. Also ran Adaware, Spybot and Spyblaster to no avail.

There is still 25% left vacant on the programs disk so I dont think its that.

the system Im referring to is P4 1.6ghz with 1gb ram

also when changing users on express email, you can walk away, have a coffee, go to the store, read the paper, then come back, THEN the user changes! My Commodore 32 is faster (thank God I kept it )

this happens with the least amount of program running too. Like when you open express and Explorer for instance.

Also, when you go into Cntr Alt Del and check performance, the processor is peaked much of the time at 100%

I vacuumed it out - wasn't too dusty so I dont think heat is an issue either.

Any suggestions would be great
