Thinkpad X1 Extreme Black Screen Help

Q: Thinkpad X1 Extreme Black Screen Help

After messing around in the BIOS a day after getting a new thinkpad x1 extreme I decided to change one of the display settings from using hybrid graphics to using the discrete graphics. Ever since then, the laptop boots up fine but everything is black including the BIOS. Can anyone help me out?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a new X1E that has had this issue happen 2 or 3 times. The screen will go to white fuzz.  The only way to get it back is to reboot or sleep/wake. Has anyone else had this issue?

Hello, over the last week to week and a half my computer has been getting worse and worse. I think its triggered by right clicking objects although I dont think thats entirely whats causing the problem. The screen will freeze and then the monitor will turn black and the computer will have to be restarted. The problem can occur as frequently as 3 times in 10 minutes currently. From the last day upon restarting some images have traces of minor pixelation errors, especially the windows icon as the PC is restarting and certain other random/minor images like above my back/forward, refresh and stop bottons in IE appear pixelated. Pixelation is now at high levels. As I'm posting this the problem occured and the screen went to a blue screen and mentioned something of proceeding with a physical memory dump and i restarted right away. I have avast running with script blocker(although turned it off for the DDS) so I dont know what may have pentrated the PC to cause this if it malicious. I'm running a Dell 4600 with windows xp. On my 2nd X1 extreme, the first was bricked. Everytime I boot into Windows, I experience a freeze and afterwards a black screen after some time (a minute or so). The laptop became unusable in windows. I have all the windows and vantage updates. I disabled all remote management stuff in the bios, disabled all secure boot settings, set some keyboard preferences (swap ctrl-fn etc.) and changed my graphics adapter to discrete only. I tried windows restore and after experiencing some blue screens, that helps a bit: still freezing, but not always. When I reapply all windows and vantage updates the laptop goes back to the same behaviour: boot into windows and after a minute or so a total freeze, followed by a black screen some 5 seconds later and still later fans spinning up to full speed. The updates include the latest graphics drivers, and I think the issue maybe has something to do with these graphic updates, but not sure. Some more observations:- The laptop never froze when Windows was applying updates. This takes longer then the usual time to have it freeze.- During updating the laptop, when I logged into windows, I sometimes got a windows notification saying the gfx driver failed to start and windows is reverting to a generic driver. I can't remember exactly, but I think the laptop never froze when using the generic one. I run the machine in dual boot and on linux the behaviour is absent. It does have sleep issues in Linux where it also freezes when coming out of slee... Read more

Hi,i have Lenovo ThinkPad T470 (LENOVO 20HD0002MC) and recently has started a strange problem:While booting at first Lenovo logo shows up (where you can get to BIOS by Enter key) and right after screen goes black. When i power down laptop and boot again (sometime few times) intead of the black screen there is a prompt for Bios password, like it should have and booting continues to OS.Enter key for BIOS doesnt work while it slill get stuck on black screen just right before it loads the BIOS (after trying few times with power -off/on it gets to BIOS and i can boot normally)I have BIOS firmware updated to the latest version, so as well drivers for hardware.Im not aware of any change that could potentionally start this issue, maybe after updating bios to some newer version.Otherwise im using Windows 10 with latest updates, but i dont think this could cause the issue as its way before windows loading. Thanks for the help.

Hi Issue: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen black screen / 'screen off' on resume from sleep I know this issue has been posted about several times regarding the X1 series but .... none of those threads seem to have any kind of answer to this problem. This seems like quite a horrendous issue for a +1500 to have !! Constantly 'hard rebooting' and losing all my open work is seriously seriously annoying. Please note: My drivers are 100% up to date based on Lenovo's own update software. I have all official Windows 10 updates issued to date (21 aug 17). These are the patterns I've noticed: - It doesn't always replicate the same behaviour: after resume from sleep sometimes it's 'black' and other times it's fine. I'd say 66% of the 'lid openings' it's OK but 33% of cases it's not.- I've found that if I shut the lid again and reopen (often 3 or more times and waiting 30+ seconds on each open then 30+ seconds on each close) then I can eventually 'force' it to turn the screen on.- If I 'manually' set the unit to sleep from the start menu rather than just closing the lid, I'm pretty certain that it *does not* exhibit this problem. I'll be 100% certain once I've tried this a few more times.-  I've removed all USB devices from the laptop one-by-one and waited for the problem to reoccur thus ruling out any single or combination of USB devices.- I have the 'lock screen' shown when it does successfully resume from sleep. - The screen 'blackness' looks t... Hi, I am having issue with my Thinkpad P50 and I might need some advice from you guys. After pressing the power button, the screen remains unresponsive and it will shut down by its own after about 1 minute. During the whole process, the power status indicator remained on (without blinking) before shutting down and no beep sound was heard as well. I have tried to remove the battery and press the power button for 1 minute before assembling the battery back but it failed. I have no idea on what's going on with my laptop. Please give me some advice on how to solve this issue. My laptop is having a Win10 system with Intel Xeon E3. Thank you.

After a period of time with the machine not rebooting (just fan running, no screen, looks like no disk i/o) it finally booted and it seemed like it was working. Then the cursor froze again, then black screen, and now I can not reboot again. I noticed that wuauclt.exe (supposedly windows update) was running as well as some other suspicions apps before it froze. What would you recommend I use to eliminate any malicious software, provided I can get this machine booted up again?

Hi guys, I have been browsing through the forums and trying various 'solutions' without success. My Lenovo Thinkpad x250 has a black screen and I have run out of ideas on how to fix this. A few points:- Sometimes (maybe 1/20 times) the lenovo logo comes on before the screen 'remembers' to go black- I have tried to turn on in BIOS and still black screen- It works perfectly well with VGA cable- I have Intel (R) Graphics 5500 as the only option in Display Adpaters. It is up to date at the time of posting (Vers. 20.19.15.4835) - The issue started after I left the laptop at work 'updating'. It clearly updated and I believe the black screen came after restarting (when updates were complete)- First couple of days the screen would come on if I connect VGA for a few minutes and remove it - weird! This doesn't happen anymore- I have opened the back and screen and it looks like the connecting cables are all intact-Everytime I turn the laptop on I can definitely see a change in the shade of black on screen - goes from black to what looks like a very dark grey (nearly black) Does anyone know how to fix this? Very sorry if I am repeating a solved question, I haven't come accross a solution that has worked yet.

Hi,
I am not very techie, so sorry if I use the "wrong" terms.
Powered up our IMB Thinkpad R31 and the IBM Thinkpad logo came up then disapeared to a completely black screen. At the top left hand corner was what appears to be a computer or monitor and then next to it a lock which is "locked". We have never had any passwords on this computer, but it will let us type up to 6 keystrokes (as if we did have a password).
So, is this computer completly shot? Is there an IBM password that we aren't aware of?? I no longer have the reboot disks for this computer, but could re-load the XP that was on it (bought legally with OEM).
I would hate to take it to someone as I really can't afford to put much into this ancient machine. Just hoping that someone here will possibly know what I could try!
Thanks!

A:IMB Thinkpad R31 - Black Screen & Lock HELP!

I'm not sure about the IBM Thinkpad, but most computer will bring up a diagnostics or set-up screen if you hold down either the 'F8' or 'F10" key while it is booting up. If you can get that far, it should allow you to do a 'System Restore'. Do the 'System Restore' and see if that clears your problem.

ThinkPad E550 Type 20DF-004DUS. Thinkpad boots but sceen is black. Sometimes if USB drives or USB connections are removed, the sceen comes on. Sometimes, connecting another screen via VGA cable... the extenal screen comes on. But not always. Here lately, neither the laptop screen nor an external screen comes on. Took it into a shop and they replaced the motherboard... but that did not work so they put the old motherboard back in. They couldn't get either the laptop screen or an external screen to light up with with either motherboard. They tested the laptop screen out of the unit and it worked as expected.Sometimes I get a screen and sometimes I don't.What has me confused is exactly why these problems are happening. Could the cable between the laptop screen and the motherboard be bad? And, if so, could THAT cause the external moniter to be black as well?Have any of you experienced this?

After reading through dreaded black screen issue for other models, I am checking if the Thinkpad Yoga also has the black screen issue. Given that this happened barely inside a month after the warranty expired, this has solid changes to be the last lenovo product in the family. Issue: I returned one home from work to wake up my sleeping Lenovo. Noticed it seemed to be in a dark screen mode with nothing showing up. So tried to press a few buttons and then finally powered off using the button. Upon restart, I could see the Lenovo sign and option to press Enter to check other options and I ignored like usual happy path scenario and let it go. At the time it usually starts showing the Windows screens, I see nothing happen. A dark screen with all the keyboard lights still working but no screen. Connected to projector to see if the login screen shows but it did NOT. Tried to restart few times, reset using the pinhole at the bottom, ran diagnositcs and tried to refresh system etc using the troubleshoot options, checked the BIOS settings - all of which show up on screen and the LCD test pass like a charm but the Windows boot does not work. Thinkpad Yoga 15 running on Windows 10 pro. 20DQ machine type. The frustarting thing is warranty just expired end of July, phone support wont even discuss the issue since it is expired. Hello,  I used the Lenovo-Tool to automatically check what needs to be updated and followed the recommendations. It was a NVIDIA-Driver update for security reasons and about 10 - 15 other updates. What I noticed late was that there was also a Bios update recommended and selected. However, I tursted in Lenovos automatic update meachnism. The updates ran trough, despite the NVIDIA-Update which was marked by a red cross. Also the Bios update started and mentioned not to turn off the computer. A Dos-Box under my Windows 10 appeared and disappeared and the computer wanted to shut down - which was happening in a normal way. But now the screens were black, the computer was off. After a while, I switched it on again - the fan went on again but nothing happened.  Which means: - The screen is black all the time (as if it was broken, no text is displayed)- External screens, connected via dockingstation or HDMI are black- Computer did not display anything when connecting a bootable USB-Stick with free DOS- Interestingly, the computer is warm and the fan sometimes changes its speed. What can I do now? I assume that something went wrong with the BIOS-Update. Is there anything I can do on my own? Can this problem be fixed by Lenovo? Thank you for your replies! Best regards Nic4

Hello everyone, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 and it was working fine until today. Today I worked on the laptop as usual and just turned off the Fast Startup setting in the Windows 8 and then restarted the computer. Now it only shows a black screen (LCD backlights are on but there is nothing on the screen). I hear the usual BIOS beep sound but I can't see the BIOS screen or the Windows. I've tried to connect to a an external monitor via HDMI. Amazingly, both my laptop's screen and external monitor works fine when the laptop is connected to the external screen. But when I disconnect them, again I can only see the black screen. I turned on the Fast Startup settings in Windows 8, but it didn't work. Then I loaded the default settings from the BIOS and it didn't worked too. Finally I've installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS to test if it is because of the operating system but it didn't help too. I've tried all of this using the laptop's screen while it was connected to the external screen. It is very confusing for me. It seems like the screen is only working when an external screen is also connected to the laptop. I would be very happy if anyone can help me about this problem.

I turned the computer off. This morning, when I attempt to turn on, back to the same problem again. If i wiggle the contact button, it lights up but will not stay on.

Hello, I have seen various posts about similar problems, though not on Edge E130. Tried their solutions, to no avail. The screen is black. No faint image. Machine powers up (LEDs glow, noise of fan and hard disk). I have no external video connection. Have tried taking battery out, pressing on button for 1 minute, plugging machine to power (no battery) and restart. No success. Did not initiate any kind of update (certainly not BIOS!), upgrade or new software install (though the machine has been asking to upgrade to Windows 10, which I have not done yet). Running Windows 8.1 (as far as I can remember, as I cannot actually check - the screen is black).  AVG antivirus, updated and fully run about one week ago. Help? Please?

Hi,
Over the past year, since I upgraded the memory on my IBM R31 Thinkpad, I have had intermittent problems with my screen blacking out. It's not completely gone, just extremely dim, but I can make out the things on screen by using a torch. At first, I was able to trigger it back by leaving the lid open and never closing it, taking all the usbs and plugs out of the back, or re-starting it.

However, it seems like nothing I do will trigger it on now. I've done a search and apparently the commonest cause is that the inverter needs replacing. Would this seem like a sensible thing to buy?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IBM-Thinkpad-...goryZ162QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

The only thing I'm thinking now is, i've had this laptop for 5 years now!! I'm not sure if it's worth fixing or upgrading anymore. I mean, I love it, just cos it's lasted this long, i've upgraded the memory from 128mb to 384mb and i've bought a wireless card for it but would it be worth trying to buy and fix myself a new inverter or just buy a new laptop?

Thanks!!

A:IBM Thinkpad - Backlight screen black.. inverter replacement?

Well the most common things would be the inverter board you linked to, or the backlight bulb itself.

If the laptop still suits your needs, in terms of performance than its much cheaper to just fix this one, than buy another laptop of similar quality.

The great think about IBM is the great support. Here is a link to the hardware manual for the R30 model.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-39797.html
It should tell you how to get at the inverter and bulb.

Even if you do get a new laptop, its still worth it to fix this one up as a backup laptop. 20-30 pounds and a couple hours to fix it isn't that bad.

And i believe its called a flashlight not a torch. You could burn the house down with a torch

Basically, this problem wasn't there before, but now it is. If I use two fingers to scroll up or down with the touchpad, it will make my screen go black until I move the screen agin with the touchpad.1 finger seems to be fine and causes no problems. Has anyone else had this problem? I've tried a few different "fixes" from gogle searches, but nothing has worked. If anone has any insight, that would be amazing because this is very annoying. I need to be able to scroll/ do anything involving the touchpad with two fingers. Thank you,-a confused person

My X1 all of a sudden has a black line on the screen when the brightness is higher than ~ >40%. It's the OLED touchscreen version. It looks like this:  And without a question...happens 2 months right after the warranty expires. Already contacted technical support; anyone has a similar issue? Is a screen replacement most likely the only solution?

N00b here. Installed Linux Mint on my lenovo thinkpad T420 a few weeks ago but could not boot into Linux. Eventually tried using Rescataux Beta on a usb. First I used the easy UEFI repair, which didn't work, so next I tried boot-repair. This worked, I could get into the OS. However, now I can't get into the bios, it just displays a black screen when I press F1 during loading. I tried doing a bios update, which appeared to go fine, but this didn't resolve the problem. I have no idea about what boot-repair does so I don't know where to look for a fix. Before I did boot-repair, I could get into BIOS but not Linux, afterwards, I could get into Linux but not into BIOS. Based on other posts, I've taken out the battery, and held the power button down for 30 seconds, and I've also sent @someotherguy a PM as I've seen suggested in other posts, but had no response.   # dmidecode 3.0

Hi, I just got my Thinkpad P70 4k with Nvidia Quadro M3000M graphics this week, running Windows 10 Pro.I have run into a lot of issues regarding HDMI output - switching to discrete graphics disables the HDMI output and i can no longer change the resolution or scaling (nor does the Nvidia Control Panel show up). In mixed graphics mode the HDMI output works, and i can change the resolution  but after waking from sleep the image only shows on the external (HD display) connected over HDMI.I have to disconnect the HDMI cable to get video on the laptop screen and the reconnect it to get video on both screens.I suspect that the Intel Graphics runs the Laptop Screen in mixed graphics mode, in the Nvidia Control Panel I can only control the external display.    I am running the latest BIOS (2.03) and updated the Nvidia Drivers directly from NVIDIA (10.18.13.6256).  On another note I also had a black screen issue after updating the BIOS to 2.03 (no idea what version came installed) everytime i rebooted and had to disconnect the Bios Battery twice, but that somehow (??) got resolved after taking out a SD card from the Card Reader.

Hello, Today I receaved my Thinkpad X1 Yoga 20JE and after I did a BIOS update the Yoga had a black screen. I followed the instructions of the BIOS update and the battery was fully loaded and the Yoga was connected to the power. Now the screen is black and the LED in the power button is blinking green. The yoga is warm on the backside so it must be running. But I can't restart when I longpress the power button and the battery is inside so i can't put it out.I also installed some other drivers with the Lenovo update tool and maybe windows did also update.what could I do to make everything running again? Did I brick the BIOS?

So, when you press and hold the power button, it doesn't shut off?  It is a new machine, almost certainly with a warranty.  Don't mess with it.  Call support

Laptop was on when this happened: no beeps, no error messages, no reboots or system shutdowns, no nothing. The screen just went black while the rest of the device continued running. I?ve connected the laptop to an external display and my desktop was there as it was before an image has gone. After some reading, guessing and experimenting I?ve come to the conclusion that motherboard needs replacement. However, before taking any further actions (which include riding 100km to the nearest service center) I?d like to make sure I didn?t miss anything and have no other options left. So, below is the list of versions I?ve rejected and reasons why:GPU failure or GPU driver issue. Since I get an image from an external device I assume GPU is ok. Just in case, I?ve rolled back GPU drivers for both Nvidia and Intel HD Graphics and nothing good nor bad happened. Some OS settings thing. I?ve got both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 16.04 installed on the same machine, and the problem begins before any of them starts loading (i.e., screen remains black while POST). Also, both Windows Device Manager and Linux hardinfo see only the external display. Lenovo Solution Center ?Snapshot? menu fails to provide any information about current device display.LCD cable or panel went down. I?ve managed to borrow another ThinkPad t440p for a while. Both LCD cable and panel work fine while connected to another laptop.Considering observations above, I conclude that system does... Read more
