missing server Windows security center, windows firewall and windows update in services.msc

Q: missing server Windows security center, windows firewall and windows update in services.msc

i am not good at english, hope i can make myself clear.hello, everyone. this is all my fault. i download a movie call "Brave" via torrent from internet. after download i can't open the video file, the readme file tell me that i need to install a decoder software in the same folder. i use the microsoft security essential to scan this "decoder", all good. so i install it after scaning.then, bad thing happened. the microsoft security essential realtime protection shut down. windows fire wall shut down. windows update shut down. the most important, all of those three could not be restart and i can't find each of them in the services.msci search on google for a solution. it take a long time. finally, i found something on the google. the solution is use "sc" command to recreate the service on services.msc. then i download a reg file called "wscsvc.reg" from that site, and import it to the system.http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/showthread.php?116524-Win7-Security-Centre-service-missing-after-malware-infectionWindows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc]"DisplayName"="@%SystemRoot%\\System32\\wscsvc.dll,-200""ErrorControl"=dword:00000001"ImagePath"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,\ 74,00,25,00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,73,\ 00,76,00,63,00,68,00,6f,00,73,00,74,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,20,00,2d,00,\ 6b,00,20,00,4c,00,6f,00,63,00,61,00,6c,00,53,00,65,00,72,00,76,00,69,00,63,\ 00,65,00,4e,00,65,00,74,00,77,00,6f,00,72,00,6b,00,52,00,65,00,73,00,74,00,\ 72,00,69,00,63,00,74,00,65,00,64,00,00,00"Start"=dword:00000002"Type"=dword:00000020"Description"="@%SystemRoot%\\System32\\wscsvc.dll,-201""DependOnService"=hex(7):52,00,70,00,63,00,53,00,73,00,00,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,\ 4d,00,67,00,6d,00,74,00,00,00,00,00"ObjectName"="NT AUTHORITY\\LocalService""ServiceSidType"=dword:00000001"RequiredPrivileges"=hex(7):53,00,65,00,43,00,68,00,61,00,6e,00,67,00,65,00,4e,\ 00,6f,00,74,00,69,00,66,00,79,00,50,00,72,00,69,00,76,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,\ 67,00,65,00,00,00,53,00,65,00,49,00,6d,00,70,00,65,00,72,00,73,00,6f,00,6e,\ 00,61,00,74,00,65,00,50,00,72,00,69,00,76,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,67,00,65,00,\ 00,00,00,00"DelayedAutoStart"=dword:00000001"FailureActions"=hex:80,51,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,14,00,00,\ 00,01,00,00,00,c0,d4,01,00,01,00,00,00,e0,93,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc\Parameters]"ServiceDllUnloadOnStop"=dword:00000001"ServiceDll"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,\ 00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,\ 77,00,73,00,63,00,73,00,76,00,63,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc\Security]"Security"=hex:01,00,14,80,c8,00,00,00,d4,00,00,00,14,00,00,00,30,00,00,00,02,\ 00,1c,00,01,00,00,00,02,80,14,00,ff,01,0f,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,\ 00,00,02,00,98,00,06,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,fd,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,\ 05,12,00,00,00,00,00,18,00,ff,01,0f,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,\ 20,02,00,00,00,00,14,00,9d,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,04,00,00,00,00,\ 00,14,00,8d,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,06,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,00,01,\ 00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,0b,00,00,00,00,00,28,00,15,00,00,00,01,06,00,\ 00,00,00,00,05,50,00,00,00,49,59,9d,77,91,56,e5,55,dc,f4,e2,0e,a7,8b,eb,ca,\ 7b,42,13,56,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,12,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,12,\ 00,00,00after that, i can see the security center in the services.msc. but it still can't active automaticly. i change some property of security center. after start my computer, microsoft security essential realtime protection active and turn green. I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Windows Updates have been a real thorn in my side since moving to the country where I have limited bandwidth ISP. I have 6-7 Windows PCs I (try to) keep updated, both XP and W7. I've tried downloading updates just ONCE using the Microsoft Update Catalog, but then I still have to note what pc needs what updates and install them manually.

Newegg's sale on Windows Home Server today has me wondering whether I might dedicate a PC to WSUS just to manage updates.

Can folks here with WSUS experience suggest whether this is worth doing? Or might be more trouble than it's worth vs. the manual "Update Catalog" method? Or tried w/WHS and that's a problem in itself? TIA for any feedback...

A:Windows Server Update Services and Windows Home Server -- worth doing?

I manage the WSUS implementation where I work. Overall, it's a pretty straightforward product. The only hassle will be going through the list of "all updates" for Windows 7 and for XP and declining the ones that don't pertain to your systems. The good news is that WSUS will determine for you, which are needed and which aren't and will place an icon next to the ones which you need.

I don't have experience with running WSUS on WHS myself....but I'm guessing it would be pretty much the same as doing it on a straight up Windows server.

As far as getting the clients to use your WSUS server, that's a simply registry change.

Hello!

I had a windows update install and restart the windows firewall. But, I turn off the windows fall because, I have a certain firewall needed to contect from home to work. I have turned off the firewall service and disabled it. For some reason Windows Security Center still thinks that the windows firewall is running. I have tried turning it back on and then off again. But, that didn't fix the problem. Norton even thinks the windows firewall is off. Does anyone know where in the operating system I can tell the security center that the firewall is off? I would really like to get this fixed. So, I can connect from home to work again. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

A:Windows XP Security Center thinks windows firewall is on

1. Click on Start > Run > type services.msc

2. Locate and stop Windows Management Instrumentation & Security Center. By default, the Startup Type on both should be Automatic.

3. Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem.

4. Only delete the Repository folder.

5. Reboot your computer.

This will rebuild the deleted folder and the database. Now the Windows Security Center should show the correct info for antivirus and firewall.

After you're done, restart the Windows Management Instrumentation & Security Center services.

Hi-

Windows security center and Defender can't be started, I've tried the methods that I have found here and In the web but nothing seems to work. Malwarebytes once detected somespyware that was removed, and hasn't caught anything ever since. Windows update donwloaded and installed something but then it stopped.

Around the time the problem started TrendMicro Worry Free pack asked for activation and the window stuck, it's was able to click but activation button didn't send me anywhere. This software came with the computer and it has been uninstalled.

Could it be a registry problem instead of a virus?.

Hi, hope I'm in the correct section:

Can't connect to Windows Update - Windows Security Center errors

To the best of my knowledge, my system is not infected. I run Anti-Malwarebytes nightly and scan the system with the free version of AVG nightly. I'm the only user on the system and I try to download only from reputable sites. In general the system is running very well, I haven't noticed any slowdowns or odd behavior other than this problem.

I'm running Windows 7 SP 1 Ultimate, 6 Gig Ram, lots of hard drive space. Until recently I could say that all updates were installed but now I'm unable to connect to the Windows Update server. Going to Control Panel / Windows Update / Check for Updates returns an error code of 80072EFD. In my reading of tech sites it seems that this problem is not uncommon and causes problems for many users.

I'm seeing lots of the following Errors:
In the Application log, EventID 1001 'Windows Error Reporting' (See attached Item A)
In the System log, EventID 10016 'DistributedCOM' (See attached Item B)
In the System log, EventID 7000 'Service Control Manager' pointing to the Security Center (See attached Item C)

I've been reading and following various tech sites to no avail. It seems that many just assume an infection instead of diagnosing the problem. Can you help me, please?

Thanks in advance,

J. R. Fetty

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

For whatever reason Vista has decided to turn off it's firewall. I've tried to turn it back on but it says "Security Center can't turn on Windows Firewall". I then try to click on the link that says "Turn on Windows Firewall manually", and once inside it says that windows firewall is "on".

Despite any of this, I constantly get security warnings that my firewall is down. Is this something I should worry about? Could this be something to do with malware or is Vista just acting screwy again?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I should probably note that this all happen once I tried to upgrade my virus protection software, after all the fuss and trouble I had with installing and then uninstalling it, I gave up, got my money back and went with a trial version of ESET software, which doesn't have a firewall. Trend Micro also messed with my internet connection and Firefox now loads super slow.

I believe I finally deleted all of the trend micro software install but my firewall is still acting freaky.

halp!

Hello,
Recently I got a Antivirus Antispyware virus on my computer, I ran Rkill and then Malwarebytes and it found the virus and I removed it. However now my Windows 7 Security Center firewall and my McAfee firewall will not turn on. With my Windows 7 Security center, when I try and turn it on it prompts me with a message that says 'Action center cannot turn firewall on, turn windows firewall on manually' so I click on that and I click the recommended settings and it gives me a message saying 'Windows firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070422'. My McAfee fire wall will turn on for a second and then automatically turn off. I have tried many things and seeked for many solutions but so far none of them have worked. Some advice would be wonderful, Thanks!

I was running Kaspersky Internet Security 2015.

I uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller.

On Startup, Windows Security Center reported Firewall was off.

There was no internet access.

When I attempted to start the Firewall, I received the message:

"We're sorry. The Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall (etc.)"

I got a screenshot of "Security Center" which had references to:

Kaspersky Anti-Virus (Uninstalled as reported using "Advanced" Scan option)
and
PC Cleaner Pro (Uninstalled many moons ago)

I ran Malwarebytes which reported three (03) references to "PUP" files.

I removed those files.

I installed the latest version of Norton Security

Norton reported "Downloader.Upatre" and removed it along with "reimage5repair.exe" (PUA.Gen.3)

Internet access has returned, although I had to manually reset some internet options related to connection properties so they would behave as before.

Security Center opens now with references to Norton Firewall and Norton Antivirus, but I continue to wonder whether all is OK since I don't think any of these operations actually found the cause of the strange behaviour.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for more investigation(s)?

Hey there. I'm in dire need of help.

I recently found some malware on my computer; after clearing it off with Trend Micro Titanium, Windows Firewall with Advanced Security will not work. When I open up the program, it says "There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in. Error Code: 0x6D9." When looking through the Control Panel, I also found that Windows Firewall is not using the recommeded settings to protect my computer. When I click "Use Recommended Settngs", it says "Windows Firewall can't chane some of your settings. Error Code 0x80070424."

Microsoft Security Center will also not work. It says the service is turned off, but when I go to click turn on, it says the Windows Security Service can't be started.

These are all of the oddities that I have noticed. Do any of you have any suggestions for these or know of any other way to look for any other possible problems?

I recently downloaded the Sims 3 Pets from Origin. Think it's possibly not a coincidence that when I searched through the similar topics for the virus that people had the Sims 3 in their files. I checked the file location for something MalwareBytes picked up and it was created the day I downloaded this game. I can't seem to get rid of this virus. Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Firewall and Windows Update will not turn on. When I scan with M Security Essentials and with M Security Scanner it gets to a certain point and then comes up saying there is a critical error and the laptop will restart in one minute. What can I do to get rid of this virus? I've uninstalled M Security Essentials now and have installed MalwareBytes. My details are:

64 Bit Operating System
Dell Inspiron N7010
Windows 7 Home Premium

The same restarting seems to happen on MalwareBytes. It's got to the same file on a quick scan three times:

C:\Windows\Installer\{c614d3bf-243a-3fd7-a4fd-36cd3756874b}\U

There are three files inside:

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]

Once it's identified it, it says it urgently needs to restart.

Microsoft Security Essentials identified it as Win64/Sirefef.B

Hello,
Two days ago there was a virus on my computer, and I called Microsoft to remove it. But ever since then, I have noticed that my McAfee Verizon Internet security Suite Firewall does not stay on. It may appear on in the home window, but when you want to go into firewall settings, it says that it is off and when you try turning it on, it turns off again immediately.

Also, the Windows Firewall does not turn on. An error always pops up that says :
Window's firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code: 0x80070424

When I go into Windows Services, I also can not find the Windows Firewall on the list.

I believe the virus removed the windows firewall and also affected the McAfee firewall. Even though the win 7 security virus is removed, its affects have still lingered.

When I called Microsoft to remove the virus, and asked about the firewall problem, they said to contact McAfee. I've called McAfee and they have not been able to help me. They said they would research more on the matter and call me back, but they haven't. I am considering changing my Antivirus to Norton very soon.
Please help!

I had trouble updating the MSE definitions a couple of days ago and I tried everything to get it to update, something about no connection. I gave up and uninstalled MSE completely using Revo. From Microsoft's web site, I downloaded and installed the newest version of MSE and the definitions updated just fine. Finally, the action center red flag is gone. However, a couple of days later, an alert comes back. This time, it's notifying me that Windows Security Center Service is turned off. With the Action Center open, I clicked "turn on now" but nothing happens, Security Center remains off.
I go to Run-services.msc and scroll down to Security Center and double click on it. Service status says "stopped". I click start and get the message, "Windows could not start the Security Center Service on local computer. Error 5: Access is denied.
This is all done from an administrator account.
Why wasn't I able to update MSE definitions and why, after a reinstall of a perfectly working MSE, am I now unable to turn on Security Center Services?

Windows Security Center Service Disappeared Along with FirewallHello All, this is my first visit to this site. I'm a computer dummy, please be patient and talk to me like I'm 5 years old.I have a Windows XP Professional-SP3 (not the 64bit) with Microsoft Office 2003, Dell Optiplex GX270.When I wanted to update a security program, I noticed the Firewall was not on, and further checking revealed that the Windows Security Center Service had been removed altogether.Perusing the internet I learned that an infection can cause this so I tried to troubleshoot.I ran a full Malwarebytes scan in regular and safe modes which turned up nothing. I ran Spybot and AvastAntivirus and SpywareBlaster in regular mode and they showed nothing either. I ran the Microsoft Safety Scanner 1.0.3001.0 today and it removed Win32/Sirefef!cfgI ran the TrendMicro HiJack this and got a log, which I can't make heads or tails of, I can post it if you like. I then came to this website and saw that many of you experts have said that it isn't wise to have too many anti-virus products, so I removed Spybot and SpywareBlaster. What I now have is Malwarebytes and Avast AntiVirus. But no Firewall and no Windows Security Center. So two questions-1.Is my computer still infected? and once that is fixed,2.How to get the Windows Security center back into my computer? I looked on the Microsoft Community forum for the answer, and I didn't even understand the instructions. Thank you in advance for you... Read more

I keep getting Windows Security Alerts, telling me to turn Windows Firewall on. I don't want to do this, because I already have ZoneAlarm Firewall enabled. Why wont Windows Security Center detect the ZoneAlarm Firewall?

Also, Windows Security Center is telling me that "ZoneAlarm Extreme Anti-virus is on, but is reporting its status to Windows Security in a format that is no longer supported. Use the program's automatic updating feature, or contact the program manufacturer for an updated version".

Now, I already updated everything. What's wrong?

Btw, I am using the 15-day trial for ZoneAlarm Extreme Anti-virus/Anti-spyware. Is this software any good, or do I have better options? If so, exactly what should I download?

Thanks a lot!

On Wednesday I had updates ready for my computer. The XP Service Pack 3 wanted to be installed/updated. So I let my computer update as I slept. I came back Thursday and about 2 to 3 times an hour, the Windows Security Center's Balloon pops up saying my firewall is turned off but I no good and well that it's on.

So I double click on the little red shield and it brings up the Windows Security Center and of course, it says the firewall is off and then it automatically turns itself back on as if it had been on the whole time. Yet, the same thing keeps happening with the balloon coming up and everything.

This problem also closes all of my programs that I use to work from home. It also logs me out of programs like Yahoo Messenger and twhirl, as if my Internet connection is being interrupted. I need the programs in order to work...

I have a strong DSL Fios connection and the status lights on the modem never change whenever the Security Center Balloon comes up. So it can't be the modem.

So what can I do to fix this? Ever since I did the update for the XP Service Pack 3, my firewall has been acting funny. Should I do a system restore?

I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and got rid of a few Adware viruses but the problem still persists. I also ran Norton Antivirus 2008 and just got the usual Tracking Cookie to delete.

A:Windows Security Center Balloon pops up saying firewall is off but it's not...

have you tried unistalling SP? and then installing it again?

You could disable the balloon message and tell security centre you will monitir your own firewall. You said that onc you click the baloon it opens security centre and then it auto enables the firewall? or it enables teh firewall and then you get a string of problems?

Cos if it is enabled and you know it is enabled then you could just hide the baloon, but if it isn't then you have a problem i think, and you might have to restore the pc, reinstall it or buy 3rd party software.

try this though, start in safe mode and see if the firewall has that issue. I am not to sure thought tbh if teh firewall starstin safe mode, if it does and you still have the problem in safe mode, i think you have a problem and that rules out any other app or anything disabling your file wall.

Let us know how you get on, sorry i couldn't of been anymore help!!

click on reccomendations and tell it you have your own Firewall and that you have your own antiviurs and will monitor it. . it should then leave you alone.

This patch is not already installed on my system, and if I download an install it manually it's fine -- but the issue is that the MBSA isn't showing it as missing.

Is this a known issue? Or does anyone else have this issue?

A:Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Wi

Try temporarily disabling your antivirus application and if you have a third-party firewall installed, enable the Windows firewall temporarily but disable the third-party one.

This has solved the same problem for many other people according to what I've read elsewhere on other forums. Seems to be a common problem with Net Framework updates.

If this solves the problem and the update installs okay, you can re-enable your antivirus and third-party firewall, but remember to disable the Windows firewall as having two firewalls running together is not advisable.

I have uninstalled bitdefender some time ago. A security alert keeps coming up saying that I have more than one firewall active on my computer, bitdefender being one and windows live onecare being the other. I am happy with windows live onecare.

I have downloaded and run the "bitdefender uninstall tool" and this removes the fragments (?) of the firewall completely and the security messages shows that bitdefender is gone...

however my problem is that when i used the bitdefender uninstall tool, the tool deletes my broadband internet connection. my modems and routers etc are working fine. It disables all ethernet connectivity and deletes internet connection protocol settings, meaning that i cannot even create a new network to replace the ones deleted by the uninstall tool.

The only way i have been able to fix the internet connection problem is to use system restore and that works.... but bitdefender firewall is reportedly active. I repeat i have already uninstalled bitdefender. So why the heck is it still active on my computer?

Someone suggested to me to completely reinstall windows and that will get rid of bitdefender, but i am not keen on doing this as my computer runs really well, i just don't want there to be conflicts or "slowages" between windows live onecare and bitdefender.

Hello,

I've spent the night meticulously getting rid of the Malware Defense virus to the greatest extent I know how to. The pop-ups are no longer coming up, none of the related files seem present, and malwarebytes is no longer detecting it.

However, malwarebytes IS repeatedly picking up Trojan.FakeAlert files that I cannot seem to get rid of with the program, and to my understanding from reading this forum this means that I need to head on over the HJT.

Which is where my first problem lies. I am unable to start Security Center or McAfee. As far as fixing Security Center, I've been unable to find it in services to change its start-up to automatic (one suggested fix I saw) and I have not been able to find the strange applet that some users report they need to change in order to launch with tweakui Security Center. I haven't tried messing with McAfee at all, generally don't trust it for no good reason at all.

For last night's session I had avast installed but I uninstalled it after Malware Defense was gone. I find that, in general, we don't get viruses unless somebody clicks on something stupid or visits a porn site (my little brother's five-minute escapade to smut led to this Malware Defense problem). As far as I remember, avast never picked up this Trojan.FakeAlert.

In addition, if it means anything, while I read that Trojan.FakeAlert is supposed to spam you with fake anti-virus ads like Malware Defense did, it doesn't seem to be doing so ... Read more

A:Trying to Prepare for HJT, but Windows Security Center and McAfee won't start to enable firewall

Press the Windows Key + R keys on your keyboard or go to > Run..., then copy and paste this command into the Open dialog box: services.mscPress Ok.Click the Extended tab at the bottom to view all the info on your services.Scroll down the list and check for the Security Center service.Double-click on it or right-click and choose Properties. From the drop-down menu next to Startup Type, click on AutomaticStart the service by clicking the Start button.Click Apply, then OK and close any open windows. If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. After posting a log and getting assistance, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the member assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

Hi all,

I have this weird issue with my windows 7.

The security centre service and the Windows Firewall are always on disabled status after each boot.
The start-up type is Automatic for both of them but it won't stick after a boot has been placed.

Please help me solve this issue.

A:Security Center and Firewall Services are disabled on each boot

Which security software are you using? Does it have its own built-in firewall like Outpost, Comodo, or others? If yes, it's possible that Firewall has taken over as the default service and has disabled the Windows Firewall and Security Center.

It's also possible that you have damaged or corrupt system files. You could try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I think the problem started because I use Winutilities...I did a normal registry scan and there were some errors and I clicked to fix them. Now Action Center doesn't show in the task bar...So I search for it and click on it and it tells me that Windows Security Center service is turned off...I click on the button to turn it on and it tell me that it cannot start...I've been searching online for a solution to my problem and I have seen other posts about people having a similar problem...Going to services doesn't work for me...I'm assuming that since Winutilities removes random HKEYs, that might be my problem...Now, how do i get these HKEYS back?

That's why you should NOT use registry cleaner/optimizer/booster/tuneup type utilities.

The end result is a damaged Windows operating system and certain programs that no longer work.

Have you tried using System Restore to go back to a date and time PRIOR to when you used Win Utilities?

Hello Vista People:

I am not a regular here as I don't normally deal with Vista these days but I have a client that had an infection. Eset online scanner showed it as a SH292.vir worm. it was removed and subsequent scans with Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, AVG, Kasperski have all come up clean. Issue is now that Windows Firewall, Windows Update will not run. I was able to repair Security Center using a script I had from 3 years ago on a flash repair drive but I am unable to get the FW or Updates to go. Both say "windows security cannot start the requested service, File not found"

Please advise.
Thank you
Mohave PC

*edit*
Problem partway solved doing a repair install of vista. Thanks anyway

Hey, I've been using the beta for a while and have been working under the assumption that winupdate was running in the background doing its thing, however now upon launching windows update I get the red cross shield and 'check for updates' button, which upon clicking gives an error message"'windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer'Restarting does nothing, upon checking services.msc, there IS NO WINDOWS UPDATE SERVICE! I have the wuaueng.dll, and wusa.exe, but am unable to use wusa to install microsoft updates manually (such as the windows media player fix for corrupted mp3s), when I try to launch a .msu file I get this:'Installer encountered an error 0x80070424The specified service does not exist as an installed service'So how can I install... the windows update service?!I have tried sfc/scannow in cmd and it told me that it did not find any integrity violationsI'm on beta 7000 ultimate x86

Do you have the following registry key info below? It is very likely that your computer/network is infected with a variant of the Conficker virus. One of it's first attack actions is to cripple the Windows Update service to prevent itself being removed by thngs like Windows Defender or the Maliscious Software Removal Tool. Even though Win7 does not have any vulnerabilities conficker can attack, it also attacks accounts with weak or blank passwords.Review: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/SearchResults.aspx?query=confickerDownload and run MSRT - http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/families.mspx==========

Hey guys, so I've been desperately trying to solve this problem for a while and no luck yet. Windows Update is just refusing to work on my XP, but I guess the problem is quite complicated since I couldn't find a solution yet.
- There are technically 6 updates that won't install with Windows Update Agent, but it won't even show others. They download alright, but they just won't install.
- Alternatively I tried using the update site of microsoft, seems like I can install other updates that way, not these ones though.
- The problem doesn't seem to be in any connection with these updates, because the wuauserv is also missing from the services.msc list. I have it in the registry though.
- I tried re-registrating and re-installing practically everything connected to windows update, but I just can't get it working.
- Scanned the computer with avast, both normally and in boot-time, found nothing.
I have actually no idea what should I do next, or where to look for the source of this problem.
I would really appreciate any help :)) Thanks :))
