VIRUS ..Can't open files any files on desktop (server Execution failed)

Q: VIRUS ..Can't open files any files on desktop (server Execution failed)

hey there, I am almost positive i have some kind of virus. i was watching a tv show on a website and I clicked into a download option on accident  and something started to download. Ever since this happened, my computer is very slow. I can't open firfox or internet explorer. I cant get anything on my desktop open. file will download for ten min and then i get an server execution failed. So I put on safe mode and download maleware a couple times and no virus is ever detected, I am certain it had to be that download because everything went down hill from there! i also tried to get into my files from document or pictures. takes forever and then it says server failed. i am not sure what to do at this point I can't use this computer anymore. the main problem is I don't know what the virus is called to try to uninstall or remove!! any help would be appreciated! thanks,

Preferred Solution: VIRUS ..Can't open files any files on desktop (server Execution failed)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

resently, when i was trying to get Itunes to work(never mind about itunes, not the problem) i dud deeper into the problem and i gone through some regedit stuff at the RUN wich i was told to do if Itunes was gonna work and then my audio stopped working, my media files to but i can still play games (without audio). dont really know what to do but i hope you can help me. In that case thx

A:Audio not working, cant play files and when i try says:Server execution

Whatever you did to the registry caused the problems.

First suggestion is to use the System Restore and restore the PC back to a date when the sound worked correctly (ignoring any iTunes problems). That will probably fix it but, if that doesn't work, reinstall the Integrated sound drivers, from the motherboard vendor as these are the preferred drivers. Non vendor drivers and/or the generic Windows installed HD Audio Codec may not work or work correctly.

System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

About an hour ago following a screen freeze after inserting a camera SD card and then doing a restart I went to Control Panel to change a setting. Clicking on any of those selections in that list would do nothing. Then I began to get error messages that Server connection failed. Four samples of these messages are attached. I did a system restore back to yesterday afternoon when all was well (as it also was an hour ago). Same problem exists with one referring to Explorer.exe.

Added after posting the above: Windows Explorer is 'dead' - it does not start after clicking its short cut. That does trigger a series of 'Server execution failed' notices. Clicking Control Panel, Computer, Games, etc. does nothing. Every other function seems to work as far as I have checked. I would uninstall Windows Exp but can't get to Add/Remove.

Suggestions for possible cause and cure will be appreciated.

I get this message sometimes when I click on a desktop folder, it comes up with the path c:\Users\Mike\Desktop\System Utilities (which is the folder I am trying to open when fault showed). It can happen when I try to open any desktop folder.

The odd thing is (to me!) is that I had this fault before I re-installed windows 7 5 days ago, and I still have it. I assumed that the new install would create a new registry so I shouldn't be getting this message, unless it is due to another reason?

I've read a load of threads but they seem to mainly relate to Windows Media which I still have on the system but I don't use it. I had a Remote Assistance with Microsoft yesterday and it came up when he was trying to open a folder. The 'hourglass' goes for 2-3 minutes before the message comes up. After that, I can open folders with no problems (until the next time).

Any ideas please?

I've tried to open an MP3 file and it usually works, however one day I tried it and it suddenly came up with an error message telling me that 'Server execution failed'. I had the day before uninstalled the free AV trial that came with my computer to replace it with AVG9 - there was also a crash during the Optimization scan; could that have caused the problem?

I have already used system restore, tried uninstalling AVG and reinstalled WMP. Nothing has worked.

Will I have to resort to reinstalling Windows?

Hi all,

I recently had a really anoying virus which would not go away, after 7 days of fighting with it I decided the best course of action would be to format and reinstall win 7.

However now my PC is super slow, I cannot open desktop items, without right clicking and selecting "Run as Admin" and even that is really slow.

If I right click and select "Personalize" it hangs for ages then says "Server Execution Failed".

Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix these issues?

A:Server Execution Failed

You need to provide more information - filling out your system specs is necessary so we know what hardware you have. Without that information, I can only guess that you didn't install any drivers for your system, and that's why it's not working as expected.

Does anybody know what is causing this error:

I restarted Prometheus this morning to allow some updates to be installed, and when I got home from work this afternoon, I get the message "Server Execution Failed" with anything that uses "explorer.exe" (Computer, Control Panel, Libraries, etc...).

My drive letter assignments for two of my drives have also become jumbled:

I is now D and D is now I (F, G, H and J are all still correctly assigned).

I used System Restore to reverse the updates, but that did not solve the problem. SFC /SCANNOW reports "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

And Murphy's Law states: "The split second you mention the problem to someone else, it goes away". As I was making this post, the "Server Execution Failed" error went away, and Explorer.exe started working normally again...

Hello All,

I have a custom built PC, my specs are up-to-date. I'm have an issue with large video files (playing, editing and recording). When opening the videos in Windows Media Player, I randomly get a pop-up Windows message saying Server Execution Failed. The OS is on my 120GB SSD, while the video files are located on a 2TB Seagate HDD. Furthermore, when recording video files (with FRAPS), my computer freezes up randomly after anywhere from a few seconds to minutes into a recording, and seems to be fine after that. I have checked for/updated my drivers as well.
-I'm not sure if this thread is in the correct location.

Thank you in advance for your input.

EDIT: I'm impatient by nature, so I went ahead with a clean install of Windows 7. The Server Execution Failed message seems to have gone away, however I tried a short (15 minute) recording of a video game (Java based) with FRAPS recording software, and I still encounter the annoying freezes. There are no software updates available that I'm aware of, does anyone have any ideas?

In prior (and current) searches, Fraps is well known to cause these freezes. One suggestion is to set the framerate, and the other is to record in half size.

I recently posted the message below and an administrator responded to please follow the standard steps before asking for security help, then closed the thread.

I'm very sorry folks but I can't follow the standard steps -- when I try to run programs I get one of the two following messages:

Server execution failed

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

(Please note my account is an admin account on my pc.)

Not sure what to do next. Original message follows.

I was editing some home video files and my computer was running very slow. I edited the files, then tried to run them with WMV. I got an error message, "server execution failed". Kept getting it over and over.

Perplexed, I opened google chrome to google what this meant. Chrome would not open, same error -- "server execution failed." I thought I should try a system restore, but I can't do that either -- I don't remember the exact error (it wasn't server execution failed) but it was something like invalid path.

My young adult son is on the computer now, on his account. The local files on his account run fine but he can't run chrome on his account either.

I'm posting this here because I suspect something malevolent is at work. What info should I provide?

A:Server execution failed -- second try

I've tried running windows fix it for media player (I have limited internet access when using internet explorer) but when it tries to run I get the usual error:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I've also tried to boot into safe mode. I can't do this from windows as I get the above messages, and when I try to stop windows from starting up by using F2 or F11, nothing happens and I go to the normal windows sign in screen.

Hello All,
I have been through and read the post on people having server execution failed messages, but they all seem to be for Windows Media Player etc. I have yet to find a post for someone having a hard time launching a game.

The game is The Sims 3 and I HAVE played it on my laptop before. In fact I was playing it less than a week ago and it launched just fine. I have made no changes to the game's settings, nor have I installed any new programs on my laptop. I am horribly confused as to why I am getting this error message when I have done nothing (to my knowledge) to change anything that would effect my game launching.

The only change that has been made since the last time I successfully played the game is a Mozilla Firefox update. I highly doubt that this would change a setting somewhere and make my game non-playable. If anyone has any idea of how to help, please let me know. In the meantime I am going to uninstall the game and reinstall it.

Since yesterday I've been getting some annyoing problems. I installed a few Windows updates yesterday and that's the only thing I can think off that could have caused this.. The updates are as follows, KB3014442, KB3011780 and KB3000850.

First of all when I right click the desktop and click either 'screen resolution' och 'personalize' nothing will happen for about a minute, and then the error "Explorer.EXE - Server execution failed" shows up.
I read about people having this problem with WMP so I tried opening a video in WMP and I got the same message.
One thing I noticed is that when my internet connection died (which happens sometimes) I had to restart my router, and during the time that my computer said I had no internet connection everything seemed fine. I was able to open 'screen resolution' and 'personalize' so I went in to the network and sharing center and disabled my network connection.

So I thought that perhaps my other problem is gone now as well and tried to turn the PC off, but no it was still the same. It gets stuck on the "shutting down" screen with the circle spinning forever, same goes for Log out and the only way to fix it is to turn the PC off by holding down the power button.
When I started it again another problem had occured. Now I couldn't access "Network and sharing center" by right clicking the icon in the bottom right corner. instead nothing happened and after a few minutes another error popped up (attached file)... Read more

First of all I'd like to start off with saying, god i hate vista.

One day my network icon on the system tray had a big X on it. When i hovered over the icon a balloon popped up and said "server execution failed". I searched for fixes on some other forums and I tried "net localgroup "Administrators" "NT Authority\Local Service" /add ". At first I thought it was fixed but then after I restarted my computer I got a new problem.

I had a yellow caution sign on the network icon now and when I hovered over it a balloon popped up saying "currently connected to: unknown". However, my internet is running very poorly; I'm connected to a server at my dorm but before you rule this problem as my dorm causing the bad internet, i tested out my connection at my home a few weeks ago and it was very bad as well.

Before at my home it was much better than what I had when I tested it out vs my dorm connection. To clarify how bad my connection has gotten, when I typed something in chat on WoW it took about 10 seconds before what I typed to show up. Hi, where did you get your copy of Windows from?

Hello all, I'm not sure if this is an operating system question or more of a software development question.

Anyway, I have a legacy COM service, a COM server that runs as a windows service, that was written for Windows NT 4.0. I have managed to use the service on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP unchanged. However, I now wish to run the service on a Windows Server 2003 machine and I can't seem to get it to work.

This is what happens:-
1. Install the service and set it to log on using a domain account.
2. Start the service from the services.msc applet.
3. Start the client application and connect to the service.
4. At this stagte the client applicaiton freezes for approximately 60 seconds and then returns with the error message "Server execution failed".

I've also tried using the client whilst the service is stopped. In this case when I connect the service is started but I get the same error.

The development team also provided a standalone application that hosts the exact same COM objects, mainly for debugging purposes. If I use the standalone application everything works fine.

Its all very strange.

Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be? And preferably a solution.

A:DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting

I found the answer.

The above discussion says that a service must enter a running state before a COM server calls CoRergisterClassObject. So I guess its a development problem.

Not sure why it only manifests on Windows Server 2003 though.

Many programs don't run now, but some do. WMP does not run but VLC does, for instance. Photoshop runs, but no browser does.

Any input appreciated.

Hi there ppl. Would love some help. I got this funmoods thing that first showed up in my chrome browser. Googled it and removed per instructions(malware bytes and spy hunter). After that DIDN'T work, I DL'ed AVG and a cpl others to try and eradicate the thing. No luck. Somewhere along the way my Windows Media Player 11 just decided to stop working(Server execution failed) . I watch most've my stuff in VLC, so I thought "ehhh Whatever". Then websites that use WMP plug-ins decided to stop working. I've tried this "add administrators" fix I saw around run from the cmd line. I've uninstalled my Chrome browser and tried going back to Firefox....no luck! Obviously i tried re-installing Chrome and now there a new yahoo tab on startup!! So now when i open Chrome there are 3 pages loading(home page/Funmoods/Yahoo search). Any and all help would be greatly Appreciated!!

I get the following error messages
"Failed to Save all the components cascading dialog boxes"
"Windows Delayed Write Failed"
"Windows detected a hard drive problem"

I did a quick scan of MIcrosoft Security essentials after starting in the normal mode but it did not find any infected files.
I also restarted the computer in Safe mode and ran the Malaware bytes MBAM scan.
I ran the MBAM scan from a flash drive , It also did not find any infected files.
In the safe mode I ran "Unhide" and the files came back. Below is log from unhide

It's nothing to do with my AVG antivirus since I disabled it and get the same error message. I'm using Windows 7. I don't understand why it's suddenly doing this.... help pleeeease!!?!

I've recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 10 enterprise. I have onedrive account with files synced to cloud, before upgrading i've backed up onedrive files locally in my computer. Some of those files can't be opened after upgrade, formats include
.docx and .xlsx and .png. Most of these files were in direct onedrive main/root folder rather than in subfolders. As i can see those images in subfolders can be opened but not doc and excel files.

How can i view those files again, why have they become corrupt, what could I do in future to prevent these problems

I tried to install Sony Vegas Pro 10 from a file extracted to my Desktop, and when I did it said "TEMP dir not writable" and "Not enough space." Afterwards all the files on my Desktop started to disappear systematically until every folder and file that was saved to the Desktop was deleted. Shortcuts were not deleted and neither were permanent files (My Documents, Computer, Recycling Bin). The missing files are not in the Recycling Bin. The Vegas files were not corrupted, I ran two full virus scans and found nothing malicious.

I've tried running searches for the missing files and I have been able to find some in the Recent Documents folder, but nothing outside of that.

The files that were deleted include PDF files, programs and their respective folders, and assorted applications. As I said, shortcuts for similar files located in other folders were not deleted.

The main thing I'm looking for is a way to restore these files, but an explanation and a way to continue that installation would also be appreciated greatly.

A:Desktop files disappearing after failed installation

I had that happen when I was running the disk cleanup utility. I reinstalled Windows, but there may be a better way.I reinstalled Windows becaus the Start menu was completely empty. I still don't understand why it happened. Teh Disc Cleanup utility only cleans non cirtical files like the cookies and temporary internet files.

I have a HP Pavilion g6. I am not knowledgeable when it comes to hardware. Not even a little bit. But from what I've been reading on here, I'm pretty sure I need to replace my hard drive. I have a few questions, and really appreciate anyone who can help me! Please understand I'll need really specific and basic words, as I'm uneducated in this area.

1) Is it possible to recover files & photos on my laptop by using my desktop? The laptop runs Windows 7, the desktop runs Windows XP.
2) If I can't recover my laptop files with my desktop, how do I recover them?
2) Does it make sense to replace the hard drive or should I just buy a new laptop? I'd rather do the least expensive thing, naturally, but if replacing the hard drive will only buy me a short period of life on the old? (2.5 years) laptop, then I'd rather replace it. I'm not sure of the average lifespan of a laptop.

PPS attachments in email will not open but will open from desktop. Get the message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program , or if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs in control panel." Control panel default program shows Power Point Viewer 2007 is the default program associated with it. Why will it open from desktop but not from an email?
