Nearly all data, apps and shortcuts deleted!

Q: Nearly all data, apps and shortcuts deleted!

Hello

Yesterday i experienced something very odd. Just suddenly all my programs shut down, windows still running. I noticed that my taskbar attached programs were replaced with white blank pages. On the desktop all my shortcuts, folders and such were gone, though 2 folders remained intact but with almost evering inside deleted only 2 files inside each of those survived. To make this worse alle my windows apps is deleted except of desktop, store, onedrive and camera. Even Paint and calculator is deleted.

btw i'm runnning W8 8.1

Has anyone ever encountered this? If anyone know what happened here i will be glad to know it.
But most importantly is there any way to recover my files?

Cheers

Preferred Solution: Nearly all data, apps and shortcuts deleted!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows 7 has a built in program that runs automatically at 1.00 AM every week. It is a maintanance program that among other tasks, automatically delets any broken Desktop Shortcuts. In my case it is deleting perfectly good and correctly linked shortcuts to viable programs and apps. 6 get deleted and 15 remain. So my question. Does anyone know how I can create a shortcut that will NOT get deleted. Something in the shortcut is triggering this.

Does anyone know how to clear out deleted Windows Store apps from the computer? When you go into the Windows Store and right click and choose 'your apps' the selection 'apps not istalled on this pc' still shows apps that I have deleted. I only installed on one device (unless they auto-install to the xbox360 also?). I cannot see how to clear out previously deleted apps. See attached pic to see what I am talking about.

Thanks!

I can't find how to do the following very simple thing in Windows 7, probably because I'm not using the right buzzwords.

I want to group shortcuts to apps that I commonly use so that, for example, with one mouseclick (ot two at the most) I can see the shortcuts to all my photo retouching and photo management apps or all the shortcuts to my geotagging and mapping apps or all the shortcuts to my music editing apps and so forth. The reason is that sometimes I can't remember the exact name of an app I'm looking for but I know, for example, that it's in my music editing "toolbox" so when I hit the Start button and I'm asked for the name of a program or app to search for I'm left scratching my head.

There must be a simple way to do this.

Paddy

A:Grouping shortcuts to apps

Hello Paddy,

I suppose that you could use Quick Launch or a Toolbar or two (see also: Taskbar - Pin or Unpin a Folder ) on the taskbar to place your shortcuts into for easy use.

Hope this helps,

Instead of storing my photographs on the C drive on my Windows 8 machine, I have them on a powered USB hard drive which is always attached to my PC. In the My Pictures folder in Windows (C:\users\[name]\My Pictures) I've created a shortcut to the photos folder on my USB hard drive. This works fine when I navigate to it using Explorer or any other file exploring software.

However, when I use a photo editing application such as GIMP2, click Open and navigate to the My Pictures folder on my C drive, the shortcut folder is not shown. Other image folders which are actually in that folder are shown. To see the shortcut folder I need to change what is shown from 'All images' to 'All files'. When I do this I can then see the 'My Pictures - Shortcut.lnk'but if I then try and open that folder I receive an error message saying that opening the shorcut failed: unknown file type.

Anyone know why this should be? Similar behaviour is exhibited in Photoshop Express. When I select my pictures folder, the folders that are physically in C:\users\[name]\My Pictures are shown but not my shortcut folder so there seems to be no way of accessing the photos on my USB hard drive. Another image editing app I have also ignores the My pictures shortcut folder, so I think it's a Windows thing rather than a problem with the individual apps.

I have View hidden files ticked.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi. I have a brand new Hp Pavilion and while in the process of customizing my desktop and taskbar I found that i am unable to pin anything from the desktop or shortcuts I created (such as Microsoft Word, or the snipping tool) to the taskbar. I have tried all three methods to try and pin.
The only items pinned are the ones already there from the first boot.

I was hoping someone out there as some insight to this.

A huge 'Thank You" in advance.

Do the shortcuts still work?

Do you have the "Pin to Taskbar" item in the context menu of these shortcuts of application files?

So, I've been trying to add a few things to the app list in the start menu for a while now. Every site I've gone to says to put the shortcuts in "%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs". I have done that multiple times, checked to make sure the shortcuts were pointed at the correct executable, moved the short cuts up a directory and then back to the Programs folder. I have restarted my machine since then, and I'm not quite sure where I'm going wrong.

shipahoy here.

I have recently had an annoying Virus(I Think) on my system. what happens is as follows: I might have just closed down a browser or a program, and I am Imediately asked if I'm sure that I want to delete this program or shortcut. I place the cursor over No and left click. The cursor then jumps to yes. I put the cursor over No again and left click. The cursor jumps to yes. Eventually this continues long enough to catch me out, and I find the program or shortcut in the recycle bin. When I highlight to restore, the restore option isnt there, indeed the recycle bin emptys completely.

I say this is annoying because it appears that the program or shortcuts are only being deleted from the desktop but not from the computer. But I have lost as many as six shortcuts in as many moments, as it seems that if my cursor passes over an icon I am asked if i'm sure i want to delete it ETC.

I have run virus checks (AVG ), plus programs such as Malwarebytes,Superantispyware, Spybot, and, Iobit systemcare 4. They find nothing.

I hope you may be able to put a finger on what is causing my problem and be able to suggest a solution.

Many thanks, shipahoy

Hi Guys

About a week ago when I would open a file or folder or just about anything else, a shortcut to it would somehow be created and sent to the Recycle Bin. I don't think anything was actually lost, just these shortcuts showing up in the trash. I've never seen this before. Norton didn't find any viruses, I ran spyware removal tools and even ran the [email protected] removal tool. Any ideas on what may have caused this?

Dear Friends.
Hope this finds you well!
I'm not certain this is in the best forum, but it is a Windows 7 computer
I was trying to do another sets of DVD's from existing MP4 files from a SanDisk Ultra 32GB card. These would then be used with DVD Flick and ImgBurn to make the DVD's. The first(2) DVD's worked well but somehow a few of the files were not copied entirely. So, I was redoing these again to make certain I had ALL the files for the next (2) DVD's.
These are files my older brother entrusted to me for me to convert them to a DVD format. They are files of his daughters nearly entire basketball season [frames] of about 70 files and were sentimental to him and his daughter.
I feel personally responsible to correct this if it is at all possible!? It could get ugly
It was an honest error on my part as I mistakenly deleted what was titled Video 100 on the SanDisk which contained all these MP4 files. I didn't realize I was removing them from the SanDisk. I'm hoping there is a free date recovery app I could use for this one application so that an expensive license would not be required!?
Thank You in advance for your care, compassion and cooperation. I'm stuck in the mud...

Yes, and you must be creating a lot of them, that is not to say there is anything wrong with doing that.

There is a KB Article ID: 978980 Desktop shortcuts disappear in Windows 7
But, it does not address how to keep unused/defunct icons to four or less or to change the setting to 0. You have to manually keep them to four or less.
There is probably a registry setting but that is more involved, and its Method Two is less than desirable.

I've opened the file locations for various start menu shortcuts and moved or deleted them. For some this works fine and gives me a start menu that makes sense, e.g. putting all the apps to do with graphics in a graphics category, all the uninstall links in an uninstall category and so on.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/81c92f3psw...0list.png?dl=0

But in Win 8.1 even allowing for their being two locations , i.e.
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
and
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
some of these links don't show and others still show in the apps list in their original locations.
For example of a list of about 20 links in the uninstall category I created only three show in the apps menu - but they are all in the same folder.
So there has to be more to it than just editing the two locations above.
What am I missing?
I'd really like help with this. I don't want an apps list that is messy and random - I want one that is organised and logical.
My graphics programmes all listed under a graphics category.
My office programmes under office and so on.
I'd rather that than the dratted thing being rendered useless with all the items full of programme specific links, often to a folder filled with junk links. it's that which made the old Win 7 start menu such a pain - endless entries installing themselves with the name of the programme, some like Flash that you don't ever launch manually anyway- but at a least that... I hope someone can help solve this for me.
I went on an accidental "Delete all registry" spree and it deleted the registries, as well as all the backups for it too.
I use a program called "RegCleaner" and it has always worked fine for me, but after this mistake my computer is not working right.
Links such as Mozilla Firefox, and File Links work, but programs such as games, Limewire, etc. will not activate or "pop up" when I click on them, it just simply doesn't do anything really. (This goes for almost every program on my program list).
Sorry for being so computer illiterate it's just I'm very concerned for it is my grandmothers computer.
I'm begging anyone who knows to please help me! Ahhh!

Hi,

I am also facing a similiar issue, like given in the thread - Cannot delete shortcut file

I cant deleted some invalid paths and shortcuts in the system....
Here when I open any application and try to insert or open a file for that application, I am facing the problem.

For Example,
In VLC Player, I click on Media --> Open File

This gives you the Box to select the file you want and in the bottom of that small window in the " File name " box, you will be having a drop down box to select the file.
Here all the deleted files are listed with the file name and path, which was deleted months ago...
When you select the file it says, "Path does not exist, try again"
So, I think all the invalid shortcuts are stored some where in the system, which displays there.
So we need to deleted that particular cache.
I found out that there is something called " Indexed Cache " in Vista, which saves all the shortcuts as the files are stored.
I need to find out how to delete the file shortcuts from that location.
Please help.

Similiar issue is there in Outlook 2007, when I compose a new message and insert file.
It gives the drop down box like the above issue with all the deleted files path.

I tried rebuilding the Indexing Options as advised before.
It didnt work.
I performed all the basic steps, like deleting cookies, temp files from system, ran chkdsk, disk cleanup, and also used some popular and unpopular cleaning software and nothing worked.

I had upgraded to Win 8 pro from Win 7 by digital download from MS and installed on 1 desktop and 2 notebooks. All upgrades went fine. However only the desktop functioned normally. Both the notebooks would not function as expected.

The problem started soon after installation. The Tiles became unresponsive, the screen would blank out when any of the Tiles were clicked. Tried contacting MS support, only to waste 2 hours while the Tech checked settings etc. but to no avail. I was told that I would be transferred up to level 2 support but since I had no more time or patience I have not followed this up till now.

Refresh Windows had been tried once. With no change.

In my infinite wisdom the next day I tried Refresh a second time and lo and behold all my installed Applications (software) vanished including MS Office 2010. Cannot be seen or found by search. The same is the case with notebook no. 2.

At this point I do not care about the tiles etc. just getting my apps and associated data back intact. With Explorer I can see that these program files still reside on the HD. When I tried to invoke them directly by clicking the appropriate .exe files I got the message the " ERROR The operating system is not configured properly to run these applications."

Please any input will be highly appreciated. I am desperate. Thank you

A:Refresh deleted my Apps

Well this is a new one...

By 'refresh' I think you mean reinstall windows? In that case all of your programs WILL disappear...

The best guess as to why windows 8 doesn't work good is because notebooks aren't fully supported for some reason. There are a few people asking about this, and Microsoft might add in more support in future updates for this.

There was a similar thread where someone posted asking if Microsoft will eventually add support for net books...

Personally I think Microsoft intends to let net books, notebooks and any other similar device die. With the new tablets out, there really seems no need for them it seems. So if your notebooks don't get supported in future updates, you'll know why.

Sorry to say...

Hi,

I am using Windows XP and am attempting to recover a lost file. Using the save/save as options in Sound Recorder, I have accidentally overwritten a file. The original file was called "song1.wav". The overwritten file is called "song2.wav" and "song1.wav" does now not exist.

I ran a program called 'Recuva' in an attempt see if I could retrieve "song1.wav", and it found a shortcut for that song. However, when I attempt to open shortcut I get the message that "the item has been changed or removed, so the shortcut will no longer work properly."

Is have 2 questions then:

1) Is there a way to find the item (source) for that shortcut before it was overwritten?

or

2) If I locate the source myself as the current file, "song2.wav" - and attempt to open the "song1.wav" shortcut - will it just open "song2.wav" as it currently exists, or will it open "song1.wav" as it existed before it was overwritten?

Any help would be much appreciated, or if anyone has any other ideas as to how to retrieve the overwritten file, that would be much appreciated also. I have also ran the program 'PCInspector', and it too found the shortcut for "song1.wav" but not the source, unless I am reading incorrectly.

A:Broken Shortcuts and Data Recovery

If it is helpful, the shortcut for "song1.wav" was located in the folder 'My Recent Documents' - not in the folder it was originally saved in.

I use BSafe Online Internet Suite which includes a virus scanner, firewall, popup blocker, privacy of information protector, and Internet filter with a lockout feature to control objectionable sites on the web. My main problem consists of two applications I removed from my registry by using Add/Remove Programs. One was the ParetoLogic Driver Updater, and the other, The Weather Channel's Desktop Weather. Even after this, they still kept starting up and displaying flash screens on my monitor. I have to end the programs manually every system startup which really slows me down! I'm not able to delete Bring and some other apps using the dedicated command lines in Powershell and/or Powershell_ISE. Can someone help?

I saw here that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue (did not try that link):
Cortana - Enable or Disable in Windows 10

For the rest, interesting new features in the settings menu. The installer asks to confirmed the Home or the Pro version and sees that I run the Pro version. On post-installation, the Pro version has similar behavior of the Home version. The very last thing that a Pro version owner wants to deal with is the HOME version.

Got the ISO from Micrsoft there:
Windows 10 ISO)

I can tell my computer is still infected with something because I can't download Hitman Pro or other programs that may help me continue scanning. The ones I have detect nothing (used rkill, then TDSSKiller and MBAM and Trend Micro Housecall). I can't even download HitmanPro and it deleted my MSE completely (which I also can't redownload). Firefox acts as if it downloaded these thing to my desktop and then it's not there.
I don't have another computer or a flash drive. What can I do?

A:Removed FBI Moneypak virus, deleted MSE but can't download MSE/Apps still.

Hi

I'm using a App called Quicknote. I'd like to sync the notes with another computer but I don't find the storage folder. The same with other Apps. If I know the folder, syncing with Dropbox or something similar should be no problem.

So, anyone knows the location?

Thanks

When I first got my new laptop I made and image using Asus backup restore but all it did was make a copy of the restore partition on the hard drive. Is there a way to make an image of what the computer is with all the data and programs there are installed? I had to do a restore and then I had to reinstall everything and reload all my data files. This took a long time to do. It would be so much easier to just have an image of everything just the way it is now.
Will I need a third party software to do this? And if so which one is the best?

I'm currently using (inconveniently) 2 different XP computers for financial recordkeeping and tax preparation (Turbotax/Quicken) for filing in the US and Canada. I have found the hard way that mixing country- specific versions of the SW on the same system presents compatibility problems. Two independent systems keep the programs & data files 100% separate. Crude, but it works.

I'm interested in whether I can create separate partitions or logical drives on my new 1TB disk drive that will fully isolate programs/data on one computer. There's lots of info on patitioning, etc., but little that speaks to my situation.

I'm naturally risk-adverse messing with my data without knowing the end result (I regularly back up via Ghost), so any guidance would be appreciated. Sample Q's: I assume I need to install another copy of XP in the new partition?; Must I reboot to access the apps on the new partition?; etc....

Thanks!

A:Will partitioning isolate my data and apps?

You could create two partitions and dual boot XP. You would need to re-partition the existing drive if no unallocated space was available. This can be risky so a full backup is a must. Using a second drive for the 2nd XP install will also work.

Here's a guide that explains the process:
XP/XP dual boot image

Depending on your hardware, you could also do something like running an XP virtual machine using VMware Player. Then you wouldn't need to dual boot and you could run them at the same time if your hardware could support it.

Chrome is my default and most used browser, and I began wondering how I could add shortcuts to the apps page that didn't involve dragging and dropping the bookmark. I tried the tutorial I found on How-To-Geek:

How to Create Custom Chrome Web App Shortcuts For Your Favorite Websites

But when I went to load the unpacked extension, it said that two lines of the manifest.json file weren't valid. I only edited the fields needed, but it wouldn't take it. Any ideas?

OK - I'm not overly Techie I'm afraid. Just considering the upgrade from Euro version of Vista to W7 E. This means a clean install, I'm happy with the whole partitioning thing, but how do I get all my old data and apps onto W7 once it's up and running? I've got many many gig of data and some excellent apps that I need working without a whole lot of grief. How does this happen? If this is a matter of an entire manual re-load of all this data etc, I'm simply not going to do the upgrade. Can anyone help?

What is the pros and cons of having a partition solely for your o/s? As I am considering this at the moment I thought I would get some input.

A:Operating system apps data only partition

For years, I use different partitions and/or drives for:

OS1 Vista
OS2 2008 (multiboot) Will be Windos 7 in the future
Programs
Docs
Backup
Swap,internetfiles and temp

and more for downloads and so on.....

And I make a backup(image) only for the OS partitions, which are 30 GB!

That's my way, maybe many don't like it, but never had much problems!

I'm not sure I'm in the right place for this but I guess there is no harm is asking. I'm currently in a custody battle with my ex and there are some messages supposededly sent and deleted on FB messenger over a year ago I guess? Anyway now our devices are undergoing a forensic investigation. I guess they are copying the data off our phones and computers and going off that. My question is how does that work and can they get those supposed messages from the computer or phone when they were "sent and deleted" over a year ago?

there are probably a ton of these programs around, you'll just have to search to find the one you want best. In the mean time use a different computer if at all possible, because every time you write a file to your harddrive it could possibly be overwriting one of the files you want to recover.

Here is the full story. Hope I got this in the correct forum.

Some how my Paypal was breached and two things were purchased on ebay. I assumed this was due to some malware or virus I acquired. I noticed on the computer that I was unable to go to google or ebay and that Excel files would not open without giving some macro error.  I ran Malwarebytes and it found a bunch of things, I don't recall what and now the log files are corrupted and make no sense when I open the text file.  My files were still available and could access and open them as far as I looked as I was dealing with the other parts of this issue.

The system is Windows XP Pro 64 bit and has a 1TB SATA drive with two partions, a 500GB SATA drive single partition, and an 160GB IDE drive single partion. OS is on the first partition of the 1TB drive.

I installed Eset Nod32 and set it to run on all drives and left it over night. I woke up and it seems to have rebooted and now said BOOTMGR missing.  I ran bootcfg /list and it said there was no boot.ini. I did a bootcfg /rebuild to make a new one. That did not solve the issue.  I ran fixboot then ran fixmbr.  Once it had the new boot.ini I then got ntldr missing so I replaced that and then ntdetect.com when it said it was missing. Then it said Hal.dll was missing or corrupt. Replaced Hal.dll in both system32 and syswow64 and it still per... Read more

The audio on my Envy Pro 34 has died so HP has agreed to replace the system BUT I've installed CAD and several other Win32 apps that I use for my business. What's the best way to backup the apps and their data so i can just copy everything over without having to go back to installation discs? As it's an AiO, I can't get access to the physical disc. Is there s/w that anyone can recommend that will do this for me? I'm not sure if HP take this one straight away when they deliver the new one so I might not get the chance to transfer PC-to-PC.Any guidance gratefully received.

Hi,

Im an IT specialist first  year trainee and student in a Company.
My boss said me to find out how to install Windows 10 in PC without losing any Data and Pre-installed apps, Favorites, Documents.....

The problem is that the PC is connected to the domain server and the currently Windows 7 is also installed from Network and I have to install Windows 10 from a USB device and connect it again with domain and log in with my user and the data should be there
like windows seven installed from server had pre-installed Lotus notes and much things and they should be back. I think they are installed Automatically when a user connected to domain signs in.

Any solution or my boss is crazy?

I have 2 Excel workbooks open at the same time, each within their own separate applications. Each was started using the following 2 shortcuts:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" C:\FltTools\Book1_.xls
and
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" C:\FltTools\Book2_.xls.

Assume that Book2 has been modified since it's last save
and
Book1, which is active, needs a copy of the modified worksheet from Book2.

First, I'll check to see if Book2 is open, and then if not, open it:

On Error Resume Next
Windows(C:\FltTools\book2_.xls).activate
If Err.Number>0 then Workbooks.Open (C:\FltTools\Book2_.xls)

PROBLEM: Book1's application is not seeing that Book2 is already open, most likely because it is in a different application. So, this code opens a new instance of the last saved version of Book2 into Book1's application, and is then copying the older unmodified worksheet.

QUESTION: How can I code one application to search for an open workbook within a different application?

Thank you, Tom

When uninstalling store apps, will this also remove any data/configuration files associated with the app?

The reason I ask, I had a working Twitch app, Unstream. Lately this app only partially works, I can open streams from the notification but launching Unstream from the start menu opens a window and immediately closes it. I tried uninstalling the app but problem persists. I just want to make sure that I have completely uninstalled it before I chalk it up to a bug or some new incompatibly with my system. Trying to run it on a desktop PC, if that makes a difference.

Thanks.
