Solved: Vista Stinks!

Q: Solved: Vista Stinks!

I have an Inspiron 1000. It originally had XP on it, but stupid me wanted the most updated OS so guess what I went and did?? That's right! I put vista on my lappy and now it just plain stinks! A slug moves faster than my laptop does!! How do I remove vista from my laptop and reinstall xp? I have tried reinstalling with cd and it doesn't give me the option to install(appears vista is alot harder to get rid of-kinda like the flu!) Can anyone give me instructions on how to do this? I have backed everything up so I am ready to dump! I am not a tech chick so go easy on me! Thanks a bunch!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay. I want your opinions. I'm only going to use Vista for making screenshots and doing documentation. I wish I could avoid buying it, but I need it for an ongoing documentation project.

What version of Vista stinks the least?

I've ruled out Home Basic as too basic, and Ultimate as too expensive.

I'm trying to decide between Home Premium and Business.

Not sure if I'm writing for help in the correct category. Please let me know if I'm in the wrong place. I would also like to add that I am completely pc illiterate.

I recently lost my web cam connection. I've installed & reinstalled everything several times with no avail. I've even done a system recovery (boy was I was sweating when I did that) Thought that was the end of my pc! My friend is on a Mac notebook and is using aim 4.7 whom I am trying to connect with and I'm on a pc, (windows xp) Our connection (when we were able to connet a while back) was always very lousy but at least we were able to connect somewhat. We are both stay at home moms and we both really miss our web cam connection. I've tried to connect via aol, aim, aim 6.0 and aim pro which all did not work. I've called Labtec (web cam people) and they told me to call aol. I've called aol and they told me to call Labtec.

Any suggestions?

Got the new FF update last night, what a bummer!!!  Many book marks disappeared, the look and feel has changed much to my dislike.  I wonder if I can revert to the last version?  Is anyone else not happy???

A:New Fire Fox Stinks!

My Firefox v56 updated yesterday to v57. My 'add-ons',the ones that i deem important ie. Ad-blocker & Privacy Badger were still there,so on that count everything was ok.
However, regarding the hoped for increase in broswer speed - it simply hasn't materialised !. It's as slow as v56,which was never that bad that i lost sleep over it.
All my bookmarks are still in place,& the only thing that seems to have changed is the Homepage appearance. All in all,a waste of time - at the moment. I'll await further updates in the hope that eventually Firefox v57 will live up to the months  of 'hype'
I had 'Auto update' turned on & it didn't update on the 14th. I turned auto UD 'off' & then had to turn it back on again for v57 to install, which it did within seconds.
I suppose to give Mozilla the benefit of the doubt - this is a brand new version,'relatively' untried except for the Beta version,so we should expect a few glitches. However, since most of the hype was about 'speed' - i'd have expected that to be there from the first second it went live - it wasn't. Just something else that's been 'improved worse' !!!. (At the moment)

I have an Epson Stylus c80 inkjet printer that has never given me a good color print job. Mostly I always get those vertical bands and lines running through. I know that's probably a common thing, but I've tried every utility to solve it - the head cleaning, nozzle cleaning, etc. Nothing works. This has gone on since the day I brought it home, about 2 yrs ago. I only use Epson cartridges. I've contacted Epson..they just tell me to use Epson cartridges..I tell them I DO!..they just repeat themselves..so no help there.

I researched printers pretty thoroughly and thought I was getting a great printer. Now I don't trust myself! Any recommendations for a printer that does a good, reliable color printing? I've hung in with this disaster as long as I can.

I'm NOT doing any high-quality photo-type printing at all - - I'm just talking about printing quick, small things like jewel case covers, or things I do in Paint, or small pictures from the internet. The color itself is okay, but it's the bands and lines running vertically through them that are always present and I cannot solve. That's what I want to avoid in a new printer.

I have been here, done this before, still need some advice.

I am using DirectCD 3.01C, on a PentiumII, 450 Mhz, Gateway PC with 256Mb RAM, and using a HP 9100 CD Burner. My Norton AV is updated weekly, so I know I don't have a virus.

I reformatted about a month ago because of this same problem. [you can look up my past letter on TSG] It was suggested I reformat the C: drive by a PC tech at a computer store after he played with my PC for a couple days, charged me $213, and didn't do a thing for me.

After I reformatted and reinstalled Adaptec DirectCD, I could copy small files and photographs neatly to a CD-RW and I could copy full CDs to CD-Rs with no problems. (I could alway copy full CDs with CloneCd without any problems.) Single file copying worked fine up until about yesterday, then I started getting the same problem ~ Adaptec DirectCD would not recognize an already formatted CD-RW with files on it. If it did recognize it, it would take a very, very long time to try to copy those few little files [10 to 300 kb long] and then it would quit with the standard error [it has become standard to me, I see it so much] "...this CD has an unrecoverable read/write error, you should move all your files off this disk, blah, blah, blah..."

Any suggestions or ideas out there? Am I one of the few [or many] that is beginning to think that this technology or the software is still in it's infancy and is not a really good way to backup or do I need another softw... Read more

I can't open a installasion, it closes change or remove programs, it closes most of the stuff!! Even it's own settings!!! So I'm asking if I can delete the DEP. Can I?

A:Data Execution Prevention Stinks

First make sure you are installing known good software (not something questionable).

You can disable DEP for the software you are installing by going to System Properties > Advanced tab > Performance settings button > Data Execution Prevention tab > tick the button for Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select. Then Add the program you are having trouble with.

You can also completely disable DEP for all programs by editing the boot.ini file (C:\boot.ini) by changing /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN to /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF. You must reboot for the change to take effect.

Last week i brought my 2.5 yrs old T440 to Lenovo Bugis suppt center to replace a cracked LCD back cover (one fine day i noticed a crack along the righthand side hinge and after opening, the cover was hard to close & open!). I had a queue tkt that said waiting tme approx 5 mins, but it took 20 mins for the front desk asst to call me. He rightly said the warranty had expired and they need to charge me $50 (+gst) to assess how much it would cost to fix it. When i asked what they want to assess as the laptop was working fine, he said in that case i should pay $30 - to source for the broken part and only after that they can tell how much would the total repair cost be! To me, it didn't make sense as they are the 'makers', but the guy started explaining the parts are made by 3rd party suppliers and and that's the process they hv to follow for 'older' models! Then another colleague of him came to explain, but he also couldn't tell me the rational for not able to tell me upfront the charge for replacing a 'highly visible' broken part! They are cheats in my opinion!! I have been a ThinkPad user for nearly 20 years and never experienced such poor quality machines and bad service!!! Hell with Lenovo.

As online gaming grows in popularity ESET researchers found that cybersecurity measures haven't kept pace as 36 percent gamers reported actively turning off security software if they found it was slowing down their computer.

The study, conducted by Google Consumer Surveys, polled 500 gamers and found that 52 percent of respondents said they don't even use security software on their gaming computers, according to a Sept. 13 blog post.

Gamers stated numerous reasons for their lack cybersecurity hygiene with 20 percent saying they don't need it, 13 percent saying they don't like they pop ups, 12 percent saying it slowed down their computers, and eight percent saying that it interrupts their gaming experience.

Researchers warn whenever security settings are disabled, users run the risk of malware stealing their login credentials and using gaming accounts for malicious activity which could lead to the legitimate user getting banned from the gaming platform for someone else's actions.

The stolen accounts could be used for botting, item farming, and other activities without the account owner's knowledge.

I have looked through loads of other similar problems to mine but can't find an answer.

A couple of hours after a Windows update, I noticed my brand new laptop running very slow for something that should be a speed machine. I scanned it with antivirus, spybot, tuneup utilities, scandisk, and windows malicious removal tool. Nothing showed up!!

After a thorough scan disk effort everything seemed to work very well so I decided to make my acer restore disk just incase anything happened in the future so that i could boot form this dvd and be fine. Like a dumbass though I decided to move to a more comfortable spot which in turn managed to pull the power cable out of the laptop during the burn process. My battery was not in the machine so it killed the computer power. (pretty unbelievable when im reading this back but honestly this is what happened!!!)

Now Vista wont load up... It takes an age to get to username and password if ever, but then when i click to load it just goes to a black screen and nothing will show up. It stays like that for hours.

I just want to scrap everything on the system and start from scratch.

Its an acer computer and im pretty sure there is an option to restore laptop to factory settings but as i can't access windows i cant click on it to do this.

Ive used F8 and out of these options

I have had transparency working twice with an aero msstyle file and/or a theme file but each time I needed to install WindowBlinds for it to work. After which I uninstalled WB and enjoyed the aero experience. So WindowBlinds automatically turns it on somehow. Due to their trial limitations I can't keep installing every time to kick start aero and it's a bit extravagant to pay for especially when my computer is capable without it. I need to know how to turn it on manually.

I've patched the system 32 files. Set the windows color scheme to Windows Vista Standard. I've enabled desktop composition via setting for best appearance. In the regedit DMV key I've set composition to 1, compostion policy to 2 and colorizationopaqueblend to 0, 1 and 2 (opinions on which # works differs so I tried all three) and it's still not worky. Does anyone know anything else that controls transparency? Of course Microsoft has generously disabled the transparency control in "Window Color and Appearance" on Vista Home Basic so that is not an option.

I would just use VistaGlazz but have never been able to run it on this computer. It crashes every time I open it.

Last night I attempted to install Vista SP2 and after a couple of hours of waiting, the upgrade apparently failed and my PC informed me it was rolling back to SP1. Now when I try to boot up, I get a small dialog box which says "Windows Activation - Reinstall Windows" followed by "Windows must be reinstalled to activate. Insert the Windows installation DVD or CD into your computer to begin the reinstallation process."

Clearly I don't want to do a clean reinstall. Any advice about how I can get around this problem? The system actually seems to be working just fine in the background.

I'm currently running Home Premium and I have a link from the school for a free upgrade. My question is when I upgrade will I lose my personal data, or will it be safe? I have a 320gig HDD that has over 150gigs of my own personal data I want to keep. I'm just curious if I have to back everything up before I do the upgrade, or will it simply overwrite itself leaving my personal files alone?

Tried reseting bios to deafult (set the xp hdd to boot first), tried popping out the cmos(sp?) battery. Computer still wants me to boot vista. Any way to get rid of this?
P.S. When I choose the xp option, xp loads fine, but I'd rather get rid of that annoying boot, since it stands on vista by deafult and my stupid acer keyboard doesnt work during that boot process - so I have to get an old ugly one for that.

I have a user who brought in their laptop for me to try and resolve..this user has an AOL account and for some strange reason with the correct Username and Password, it goes through the three step phase of connectiong and verifying username and password. So I got a glimpse of it, entered in the username and password and it went fairly well with the connection process...I even heard "Welcome..." but I did not see the home page load..and thats when the aol screen disappears...A message pops up saying, "Restaring AOL, your aol software has encountered a problem. We are restaring your AOL software to bring you back online." and then another message box appears, "AOL software encounteered a problem, we have restarted your AOL software and are back online.." A message at the top of that second message verifies SUCCESS, but nothing..it keeps going in that cycle and nothing gets restablished. It comes to a point where it's difficult to just end the event.

I've clicked on the details button "We are unable to determine the cause of your shutdown. We're sorry, no additional details are available"--not even AOL can provide reasoning!

Version of AOL = 9.0VR
O/S = Vista
Ram = 1gig.

Should I try AOL 9.1?!

I have three computers connected to a home network. Two of the computers are Vista and One is XP Professional. The XP can see the Vista Computers, but not access the files. The Vista computers can see each other and share files but not the XP. All computers are wired together through router.
I tried everything I can think of. I even downloaded and installed a LLT discovery Responder for the XP and no luck. Iíve configured and unconfigured so many times that Iím sick of it and Microsoft is not very helpful.
Has anybody had a problem like this?
One other note, I donít know if it is related, but I cannot upgrade to XP SP 3. Iím going to address this problem in another post. It might be important.

Hi all,

I have a customer who had a laptop with Vista loaded and it was working for a couple of years, then this past week his laptop mainboard went out and he ordered another laptop with Vista installed. He was able to hookup the other hard drive with a usb adapter and the new laptop is able to see it, but he says that he can't get to his account folders. I'm thinking he's talking about the user account folder with his My Docs and desktop.

I'm not to familiar with Vista, so I'm not sure how to go about to "take ownership" of his old account folders, since I think it was passworded also. I know how to do it with XP Pro but I'm not sure how to go about doing it for Vista. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can anyone please help me?

I have just got a new computer and have attempted to wire it to the Belkin Router in our house. My PC is running Windows Vista Ultimate and the router we have is a Belkin ADSL2+ modem with Wireless G Plus MIMO Router - model # F5D9630-4. The router does have wireless capacity, however I am attempting to run it hard wired to my computer. When I connect the cable Vista automatically searches and finds the network, however it comes up as an "Unidentified network" and I cannot connect to the internet. My brother's computer is also connected to the same router (He is running Vista Home Premium) but his works fine. I have tried everything I can think of, including changing the DHCP settings in my registry as seen here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233, but I have still had no success.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have a desktop and a laptop. The desktop is running vista business and the laptop is running ultimate. I hate posting this dumb question because i feel like EVERYBODY must have this problem, but i didnt actually find any FIXES. I've shared the root directory of my hard drives 2nd partition (D In the network and sharing center, I've disabled password protected sharing and i've granted access to "everyone" in the share settings. I did not use any wizards. I cannot open that share from the laptop. I CAN, however, open the public folder. WHAT is going on somebody MUST have some answers, but I really don't. Please help, so that I can fix everybody else's computer too. Thanks, Dan

Welcome to TSG....

I think it is too far to go back operating system wise. People going back to Windows XP are doing better but all of the drivers for that particular operating system are needed and with the BIOS being wrong for windows 2000 you are up the creek with out a paddle.

I have just partitioned my hard drive on my computer running Windows Vista, renamed the partition 'X' and I wish to install Windows XP Professional.
I have loaded the disk, got the Welcome screen up, clicked the green Install Windows' button and I get 'This programme is blocked due to incompatibility problems'. It quotes ....the Windows version on the equipment is more recent than the CD version.
It recommends finding a solution on line...
Once I get to the Windows site, I don't know what to look for.

Should I have done more in setting up the partition (which is already in NTFS format.)
I have to do this myself as I am not in a locality with ready help on hand.
I am running a Compaq with AMD Athlon 64 X2 D C Processor with 2.87GB of memory.
Also, where do I disable the security for this download?
Many thanks.

I posted here last week asking for help with SP1 install failure. The problem (for my system) wasn't with SP1 ( well it was kind of ) but was caused by McAfee running on my system. I had to completely uninstall the McAfee software before running SP1 installation. It then installed correctly. Another thing some folks have tried is to run SP1 install from safe mode. ( I haven't tried this because I used the McAfee solution.)
Hope this helps......

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop that has both Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows XP Pro installed on it (both on a single hard drive in a dual boot set-up). I don't like Vista, and have never used it. So I've been thinking recently about wiping the hard drive and just installing XP since the Vista OS takes up so much space...
Does Vista have any features/admin tools/etc. that XP does not have which would make keeping Vista installed worthwhile?

A:[SOLVED] I have both XP and Vista. Should I keep Vista?

Both have their pros and cons. I would recommend ditching Vista and replacing it with Windows 7 as it is far superior. A dual-boot environment with XP and Win 7 will be good for now.

If you detest Vista that much, by all means bin it and stick with XP but it won't take long to feel like you're missing out on some of the nice features from Vista or Windows 7. Plus MS will not be supporting XP for much longer due to its features fast becoming antiquated with the dawn of better and cheaper hardware.

It's entirely up to you but how can you be sure you don't like Vista if you haven't used it?

I have two PCs networked on a private network.
Both PCs are connected directly to a Linksys Router.
I have file and printer sharing enabled on both PCs.

The Vista PC can see the shared folders on the XP machine just fine. However, the XP machine doesn't see the Vista machine on its network map, and cannot connect to it to use its printers

Here is the information I have for you:

On the Vista PC:
It has IP address (I got this via the ipconfig cmd)
I turned off password protection for file & printer sharing.
I have temporarily disabled the firewall
The network is KTS
When I go to the "Network & sharing center" I can successfully see the XP computer and its many shared folders

On the XP PC,:
It has IP address
I have temporarily disabled its firewall
The network is KTS
If I go to "View workgroup computers" it shows nothing
I can successfully ping
But, if I try to "Run" \\ I get the following error message: "The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help."
I am not sure how the below information might help you, but I have seen you request it on other posts, so proactively here is the output of "nbtstat -n":

Here are some things that i have come across and been able to sit down and resolve.

1) Blue Screen - We loaded Vista Business on our new Dell D830 Laptops, they image we used (Symantec Ghost) was flawless. The machines started "Blue Screening" after getting a few of the first updates. Re-imaging did not resolve the issue, neither did updating the BIOS and drivers.

The Fix - The blue screen would not come up if I powered down the system, rather than "restart" after the first round of updates. This allowed me to find and download the "Service Pack 1" for Vista and after this, the machines were fine.

2) Printers - Someone's cruel joke here, but when we migrated user accounts from XP, the printers that were already in the user profile not longer worked. To make things worse, these printers would not delete from the profile on Vista. I could add other printers, but not the ones already installed, drove me nuts! Shutting down the print spooler, dragging to the recycle bin, did not work.

The Fix - I ended up getting them all to remove by logging off as the user, unplugging from the Network, logging back in as the user and I could then "really" manage the printers and remove all I wanted.

3) Data Transfer - We went with the Belkin Easy Transfer, USB 2.0 to migrate user files from XP to VISTA. I problem came with large files and photos that killed the transfer process. After quite a few tries and a lot of time we found a pretty eff... Read more

Hello everyone,

I've just built my first computer, and I need your help!

I'm going to buy vista but I saw that vista Home Premium and Vista Home premium OEM were totally different prices.

I'm on a budget so naturally the OEM appealed because it was cheaper.

Now I thought that OEM meant that it would only work on fresh/new systems. But I'm not sure .

Should I buy the OEM version or the "full" version?

Vista "full": http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=266353&CatId=0

Vista OEM:http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=263771

Oem can only be used on one motherboard once activated, you cannot re-use it on another system whereas a retail version you can. Also Retail version owners get 2 free Microsoft tech support calls (for what they are worth)!

hi again guys. i have another problem and could use some help. i have a satellite
a105-s4284 laptop with vista loaded. the wireless works on it but the lan dosent. when i connect the ethernet cable to another laptop it works so i know the cable is good. in device manager there is an unknown device and when i go into its properties and to hardware ids it says:-
are the ethernet lights on the laptop port supposed to be on when i connect the cable cause its not. thanks

A:[SOLVED] vista

The Device in question does not seem to relate to the Ethernet card, it relates to the Toshiba Supervisor Password Utility.

The problem seems to stem from something else. On thing that I try is to disable the network adapter and then re-enable it. Instructions can be found here: Enable or disable a network adapter

You will need to disable the "Local Area Connection" and then re-enable it.

Also, does the Ethernet work in safe mode? Tap the F8 key upon start-up and select safe mode, then test the Ethernet connection there.
