I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi to all members. I am a newbie at Techspot but have some experience with IT hardware and software.

Have been having problems with my PC - first noted file corruption (caused by some hardware fault - not software or malware). Chkdsk revealed bad clusters but later scans showed hard drive 100% in good state. Tested RAM and also found no problems. Physically cleaned PC hardware, checked component seating - found PSU fan damaged and replaced whole PSU. Possibly overheating cooked some other component. I also change IDE cable.

Now system is more stable but I am getting random BSODs on shutdown and I probably something is still wrong. My prime suspicion is that the mainboard has a fault................

Attached is system info and dump from latest BSOD on shutdown.
Would appreciate some guidance.

A:trouble shooting

There is not enough information in your statement to discern what the problem is. Are there any error messages? How do you know it's an "error" sound? Is your computer running badly, what happens just before this sound and what happens directly after it? Go to Start/Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter. Click on Application, and System on the Left side, scroll down and see if any instances have a Red X. If so, double click it and post the results here.

The other day out of no where my computer froze. Tried to reboot and would not load windows. Ran start up repair and after 60 hours windows could not repair it. Tried to reinstall windows the hard drive would not show up, it was detected in bios but would not show up to install windows.

I ordered a new hard drive.

Installed the hard drive, after many problems some my fault some random windows errors windows finally installed. Started loading drivers. Had most of them installed and had to do something else, turned computer off.

When I cane back windows could not load. Reinstalled again. Installed drivers again rebooted several times in the process. Computer was "laggy" so I rebooted again. Wouldn't boot. Went to reinstall windows again. Windows says the hard drive is going to fail soon and will not install on that drive. (this is a brand new drive.)

Used a Ubuntu flash drive to check memory. All 4 first time. There was an error on test 7. Pulled one checked again same errors. Went through pulling each one then put them in one by one testing memory one module at a time. All 4 have errors on test 7.

I assume the mother board is the only option?

Motherboard = an old 770ta-ud3

Hello and welcome Lowlife (what a username I'm sure you're not) mate make a bootable memtest disk up and set the BIOS to boot from the optical insert the disk and Save and exit BIOS the memtest will boot the machine and start the test. and run the test.

It takes some time and you need to do at least 8 passes unless you start to get red errors straight way. Then you may as well get some new RAM.

But before you do that try reseating the sticks first though - just worth a try

Hi first time poster here, and I've just completed construction of my new rig, but I'm having trouble getting it to boot. I jump start the computer and the CPU fan and Case fan spin for around 5 seconds then the entire system turns off. Specs are:

MBO= Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
RAM= 2x Kingston 1gb DDR2
GFX = 8600GTS
Case is as Thermaltake Matrix with the default PSU still in use.

From the look of it im leaning towards a PSU issue as its only a 430W PSU. Is there anyway to test before I purchase a new PSU? Any help or insight is much appreciated.

I am having problems with my video display and cannot seem to isolate the issue. I have video on the mainboard, not a separate card, with 65 Megs Ram (of 256) dedicated to video. The box is Asus Terminator P4.

Symptoms are several / differing:

Sometimes the monitor just goes black and I have to turn it off and back on. It always bounces (BOING!) right back. More serious issue is that sometimes (and unpredictably) I will click some/anything and get a screen full of vertical colored bars and a whole-system lockup. The only way out is to re-start at the power switch level, go through scandisk, etc., and I'm back in business. Until it happens again...

I haven't tried the obvious test of using a different monitor, mainly because the problem is so sporadic and unpredictable. The only extra monitors I have are small-screened, and my eyes don't work well with them... so I'm hesitant to tie such into my system for an indefinite time period. (I do my work on this machine, every/all day.)

One fairly knowledgable person, on hearing about the vertical colored bars and system freeze, immediately went to the on-board video as the problem -- but that goes to replacing the motherboard (i.e., building a whole new system...), and I don't want to go there on spec... This box is only a little over a year old.

This machine has only two PCI slots, one with the modem and the other with my ATI TV tuner card in it. I have an "old" Rage Pro video card I could plu... Read more

A:trouble-shooting video problems

You may be up the river. My 'guess' is that the problem rests with the onboard video controller rather than the monitor. So a new MOBO may be in your future.

My reasoning is that if the problem was a failing monitor, it would be unlikely that your entire system would lockup. Afterall, you can turn off the monitor without affecting the system.

That is not to say that it is 100% impossible for a monitor error to lockup the system, but less likely. "Decent" video cards are not expensive. Cheap video cards are really cheap...so you could get one to trouble shoot with. Likewise, older ATI combo cards can be had for a lot less than $200! They are better than what you have now for video as well.

Top 10 tips for troubleshooting PC system slowdowns June 3, 2002 Deb Shinder

User complaints are minimal when new PCs are rolled out. They start up quick, and programs seem to open in a snap. But over time, users' systems can slow down or hang up often. While the possibilities for system slowdowns are endless, I have identified 10 common troubleshooting areas you should examine before you suggest an upgrade.

1. Processor overheating
Modern processors generate a lot of heat. That's why all processors require some sort of cooling element, typically a fan of some type. When the processor temperature goes over spec, the system can slow down or run erratically. The processor fan may fail for several reasons:
* Dust is preventing the fan from spinning smoothly.
* The fan motor has failed.
* The fan bearings are loose and "jiggling."

Often you can tell if there is a fan problem by listening and/or touching the computer. A fan that has loose bearings starts jiggling and vibrates the case, making a characteristic noise. You may barely notice the noise at first, and it's common for even the experienced computer pro to overlook this change. But as time goes by, the sounds and vibrations will become so prominent tha... How do you trouble shoot an on board video card? It's an HP 7840. One thing that I notice is that the computer (a friends by the way) has only one fan (front side).

I'm running a home-built system with these specs:
Asus P5Q SE Plus motherboard
Intel Dual Core processor
GeForce GTX 260
WD 1.0 TB Hard disk
OCZ mod x-stream 600w

My problem starts when, after moving to a new house, I set up the computer and turn it on. The computer is on for about 5 minutes before it shuts off on its own. Then the machine begins to turn on and off on for about a minute before all activity ceases. I let it sit the night, and the next morning I fire it up. This time it lasts an hour before shutting off. I let it sit another night, and the next day it will not stay on for more than five seconds.

I decide to change the psu, and install a Cooler Master SilentPro 600w (I assume I installed it correctly). After firing it up, the fans, one (out of two disc drives), and the motherboard all work, but the graphics card, the hard disk (the indicator light is not flashing, and there is no clicking sound), and the other disk drive do not come on. I hook up the fan system to the same chord as the old disk drive, and turn the computer on again; the same accessories do not receive power.

I have little idea what this all means. I would be much obliged if someone could point me in the right direction.

Hello, my daily work computer, an HP "Special Edition" laptop running on Windows Vista Home Premium has given me problems since the day I took it home from BestBuy about a year and a half ago. I am not a computer guru by any means, i just need this thing to work without absorbing all my free time trying to make it do so... very frustrating to say the least... I have become to HATE Vista as I NEVER have issues using my Mac at home and for my music... With that said, I haven't been able to download any of the Windows Updates. When I try to stop Windows Update in the C Prompt window using "net stop WuAuServ" command, it says it could not be stopped. After reading some forums, I ran across one post that said to run HiJackThis and post the log, so that is what I'm doing. Can somebody tell me if I'm infected or something else obviously wrong? I have two Vista computers and a XP computer. My internet is set up with a mobile broadband card. I also have a wireless network that allows all 3 computers to share files.
I used ICS to set up distribution of a single internet connection to all 3 computers with the broadband card plugged into one the Vista machines. This system worked fine until I had to unplug the gateway computer, take to another room and put it back together. (I have since brought the host computer back to its original location) I can still share files but can not get the internet to come up on the other two computers.
In order to fix the situation, Iíve already tried disabling ICS and then turning it back on with the sharing tab on the icon of the mobile broadband card. I checked and the other two computers are still set up to "obtain an IP address automatically" What do I need to do to troubleshoot this problem? (Probably something on the host Vista since the receiving PCs were not unplugged.) I should add that I have Norton Internet Security 2009 on all 3 computers. It created problems when I tried to set up the file sharing; however, the computers are still sharing files, so I donít think that is the problem.

A:Windows XP essentials for virus trouble shooting

I'm not sure I totally understand your question.
Are you asking for information about Windows Security Essentials?  If this is the case you can read about it at Windows.  On the page that opens there is a section titled Key Features, each subsection can be clicked on to provide the information for each.
I'm not sure what you asking with "needed for faster virus troubleshooting.  Please explain in more detail.

i bought a creative labs sound blaster audigy 2. Im not sure what model it is , because when i ordered it, it only came in a cardboard box with driver. I had soundmax integrated audio. That is onboard sound. I uninstalled that, and then shut down the computer. Then i put in my new sound card, which is a sound blaster audigy 2. Then i turned the computer on, and went into the BIOS and disbabled the onboard audi. WHen i logged in, and went to device manager, it showed up under video and sound etc with an exclamation point. When i put in the cd to install the drivers, the error message said that the system didnt detect the card, and that it wasnt put in. I double checked to make sure the card was in. It was. So the problem that im having is that i have disabled onboard sound, and put in my sound card, but when i try to install the drivers, they wont install and it will show an error. WHAT SHOULD I DO ? YOUR HELP IS VERY APPRECIATED. THANKS.

A:Trouble Shooting: DVD Drive running Vista

I am no driver expert. But I would say that your first drive still works, you just have some corrupt drivers. Wait and see what other advice you get from other people here. But I am curious, what other issues have you had with Vista to say that its crap?

Oh yeah, what version of Vista are you running? Seems like the most people I see that have issues with Vista are running the basic version.
