"Read-Only" File Attribute

Q: "Read-Only" File Attribute

Windows 7 will delete "Read-Only" files without providing any warning (unlike XP).
Windows Media Player 12 will overwrite files which have the "Read-Only" attribute set.

Does anyone know how to make Windows 7 (& WMP) obey the "Read-Only" attribute on files?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi lehnerus2000,

1) Read-only files can't be modified, but they can be copied, moved, renamed, or deleted. You can make a secure private folder which is inaccessible and undeletable. There are detailed instructions on Make Folder Inaccessible and Undeletable.

2)For WMP, go through the following page, theres a nice discussion about stopping WMP from overwriting jpgs.

Hello,

I can't remove "read only" attribute from any folder. In all folder, "read only" attribute is checked. But when I tried to unchecked "read only" and applying OK, then it becomes as previous. Even I have restored my system , but it not working properly.

How can i solve this problem? How can remove check the "read only" attribute??

Thanks
Saikat

A:Can't remove "read only" attribute

Hi jobs3saikat and welcome to SF

Are you saying that the hidden attribut is actually set?
Or is it just "hilighted" like in my screen shot.
Can you actually copy files into one of those folders and can you open one such file, alter it and successfully save it back?
(Like creating some random text file, load it in notepad, change something and save it back without error message)

Hi TimFF,
This might be related with the UAC settings, check this thread:

The steps in the above thread is not recommended.
For the short name usage, we may consider to create a directory-junction from

Hey everyone,
I am trying to get the REST queries to work with the sharepoint end points instead of graph end points. I first created an app with relevant permissions and have given it the admin consent. Then I am hitting the https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant>.onmicrosoft.com/oauth2/token?Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded end
point with https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com as resource. I am then using the access token retrieved to give the rest call to https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com/_api/v2.0/drives/b!3indYSbqZ0-hVSPnCgIZy-2xDMh7jH9AuQnEzJMc6TEfQoSJvJT-R6tT0lFBQiPr/root/delta
but it is failing with "error":{"code":"generalException","message":"General exception while processing"}}. The REST response code is 401 Unauthorized. I have filed a Microsoft support ticket but they
have asked me to post on these forms. Can someone please help me with this? I am not able to move forward because the error is pretty generic and doesn't give any additional details.

In short, paint is refusing to open a file and it's baffling me.

The file is a 14400 x 9662 8.62 MB black and white cemetery map saved under the .jpg extension. We have a bunch of other maps that are exactly the same setup; .jpg extension, black and white, and roughly the same size (some are larger some are smaller). All of the other maps open in paint perfectly fine, and - additionally - they open properly in every other picture viewing software we have. The reason we like paint is because it's black and white and basically all we are doing is typing names into boxes and drawing lines here and there; it's extremely simple and straight-forward, and, until now, has worked exceedingly well, and it's free.

The file is not corrupt. It opens properly in all of our picture viewing software. I have tried resaving it as .jpg, .png, .tif, and .gif in ms office picture manager and windows photo viewer to no avail. I have even tried importing the picture into MS Word, then copy and pasting the picture into a blank MS Paint window. From that point we can view and edit as needed as though the file had been opened properly to begin with without even experiencing lag. Then I can save it...as .jpg, .png, .tif, .gif, etc. (in order to use the .bmp extension without quality loss it winds up creating a HUGE file that paint won't open anyways. so .bmp is out). Then after paint itself has resaved the exact same file to a file... Read more

Is Windows 7.0 sometimes unable to display a folder that has attribute="hidden"?

A tool associated with Visual Build Pro 8.7 called "Enhanced Zip" seems to be stripping away the "hidden" attribute of an attribute="hidden" folder, after the folder has been added to a zip file.

We are uncertain if "Enhanced Zip" is bugged, and is "un-hiding" folders with attribute="hidden", or if the zipped folder retains attribute="hidden" but Windows 7.0 mistakenly displays it as "Non-Hidden", when you look at the folder's Properties.

A search for how to hide a folder (and subfolders and content) shows 3d party software, or using the hidden attribute in Windows itself. Putting aside 3d party stuff for now what I came upon was this method:
From cmd. Type ?CD C:abcd? (replace ?abcd? with the name of the folder you want to hide.)2. Now type ?attrib file +s +h? and replace ?file? with the name of the actual file name you would like to hide.

I tried this method which seemed ideal to me and nothing happened at all I could still see my folder. I assumed using ?attrib file +s +h" without the quotes but with spaces shown

Here's what's important: what happens to the hidden folder when i delete a visible folder above it in the folder tree? Will the hidden folder be backed up? Will it be scanned by my AV program? Can the files in the folder be recovered in an emergency such as a system crash?

Also: The hidden file attribute can not be used everything must be visible and accessible except for the hidden folder.
And here's something which I would like but which may not be possible. The folder in question (with other folders within it) is huge about 700GB. Assuming that on the drive where this 700GB folder sits are other folders totaling 50GB. In a 1TB drive this means there is now about 250GB free space. Would it be possible, once hidden, for the drive to show it actually has 950GB free space. In other words if the folder is hidden but one sees that there is only 250GB of free space left then this could rai... Read more

A hidden folder will be treated like any other ordinary folder and will be deleted similarly. However, attempting to delete a System flagged file/folder will result in Explorer prompting confirmation before deletion of that file/folder.

Usually that is the case. It depends on what backup software you use. I know SyncToy does backup hidden/system files and folders.

Definitely. For obvious reasons.

If you can recover ordinary, non-hidden files/folders you sure can recover hidden/system files and folders.
Think of file attributes as indicators that Explorer uses to modify how it shows or treats items.

Lately, I have'nt been able to install WoW either, I install it all the way to 100% and then when I try to launch it, I obviously have to re-download all the patches but it prompts me that I have to install it again, even though it is all there.

Tryed downloading the full game digitally off of wow-europe.com too, I click run to get it started, nothing happens and then this message pops up.

"The instruction at "0x00182058" referenced memory at "0x0f070014". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate the program.

I don't know what's up with it. My freind told me to run a CHKDSK /R to see if there was anything wrong with my drive and it ran smoothly, although I must say it took about an hour or so.

So, that was complete, tryed to do it again and I still kept getting these error messages. But I saw something on my desktop that wasn't there previously. It is an error log. Here is the error log;

I have this issue that it's quite important for me.
In Windows 7 my downloaded files get different timestamps than in WinXP.

For example, let's assume that on 1.1.1970 I add a a file to eMule's download queue. eMule creates a temporary .part file, stored in "Temp" folder.
Let's assume again that the file has been completely downloaded on 2.2.2010.
The downloaded file will be saved in "Incoming" folder.

In WinXP, the downloaded file would have "2.2.2010" in the Date Created field, but in Win7, it would have "1.1.1970".

This would seriously mess up my files, especialy that I have thousands of sorted pictures.

Is there anything I can do about it?

A:Win7 vs. WinXP - "Date Created" Attribute

All the information is there it is just being displayed differently. Windows XP displays the date the file was last accessed, and Windows 7 displays the date the file was created. You can adjust what you would like Window 7 to display and get the same results. Change Windows 7 to display last accessed.

Okay, I'm on Vista. I just got a new external hard drive, and was trying to move some movie folders to it. Trying to move a whole directory of similar files, most of them moved without any problem. However, some files would be unable to move. I get a message that says "Cannot read from the source file or disk" and have to skip the file to continue.

After the move of the whole folder was complete, I would try to do it again to the individual files that were left behind - the move would seem to begin, and it would tell me that the file was being moved, but at a certain point it would stop, and give me the same error message again. I would have to cancel the move.

There is nothing obviously wrong with the files. They seem to play with no obvious problems (I haven't watched any all the way through, but skipping around seems to work). I was also able to delete one of them without any problems, as well as to move them to other folders on my hard drive. I just can't seem to move or copy them to the external hard drive. I ran a check disk which did not seem to solve the problem.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Hey Guys,
I'm using Active File Recovery to recover files I've accidentally deleted. It seemed to work at first sight, but when I try to open one of the files (jpgs), none of my application accepts it. Irvan view is the most helpful, stating "Can't read file header".

Is Active File Recovery crap, or is it normal that this happens when you "undelete" files?

Using Windows Vista, I have a Microsoft Office Excel 2003 file which I use regularly. It is password-protected, contains Macros and has many sheets which contain linked formulas between sheets.

Yesterday, I went to open it after I used it several times throughout the day. It's now giving me a "Unable To Read File". I clicked "OK" "Enabled Macros", typed in password, and it gave me "Excel found unreadable content in myfilename.xls. Do you want to recover the contents of this Workbook? If you trust this Workbook, click Yes." I clicked "Yes", and it took me back to click "Enable Macros" again, then to insert password again. Then it gives me the "Unable To Read File" again, then password again. Then it brings up a window with "Damage to the file was so extensive that repairs were not possible. Excel attempted to recover your formulas and values, but some data may have been lost or corrupted." I clicked "Close".

When I looked at the sheets, it just contained alot of numbers; no format or words, etc.

I've tried to open it in Word, as others have suggested, but it has not worked. Can someone help me recover this file? I really need the contents in it's original format.

Thank you in advance.

You can't "fix" bad sectors.

You can however, decide if it's worth spending anymore time on an old 80GB hard drive with bad sectors that can fail at any moment.
Whatever your time is worth to you, only you can decide.

How does one change a Word folder that is "Read Only" so that files can be edited when on a CD-RW disk? The disk speed is compatible with the CD driver

A:Solved: Changing "Read Only" file Attributes

It's not recomanded, if even it's possible to edit word document on the CDRW: it will be very slow, it will alter the CD lifetime, and depending on the format and burning method the disc could be full very quieckly.

The only realistic solution is to copy the folder on a hard disc, do your work then copy-paste and replace the whole folder back to the CDRW.

To remove the read-only attribute of files in a folder, including subfolders: Type this little program in notepad, save it under changeattribute.bat and copy-paste it in the folder where you want to change the attribute. Double-clic on the batfile icon in explorer.

@echo off

Awhile back when I was opening the file, I received a window message stating "The workbook you are opening contains macros. Some macros may contain viruses." along with three buttons, Disable Macros (default), Enable Macros, & Do Not Open.

Im a bit stuck at the moment, i dont seem to be able to save/delete/create any files... all of my files managed to get themselves set to read-only so i set them back but its no better... when saving files i get an error "the file is locked. use the `properties` command in windows explorer to unlock the file" and when i try to delete files i get "cannot delete ****: access is denied. make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use" -ive checked all of thoose things, and eveything seems good. the only thing i can think of is that there is a setting somewhere, other than the read-only in explorer, that i need to set to read/write...
im using windows xp pro...
thanks very much if you can help! -- sorry about the bad formatting of the post... im in a hurry!

take care
philip

A:"file is locked." -- everything is read only...

is there no one out there who knows anything about this???

Hola
How can I make my CD's not become a "read only files"?
Every time that I burn a CD, it become a read only, it's sicking me.
Help
I'm using XP
Thanks
Uly7
P.S. I hope I'm in the right forum now, I just got my butt kick by one of the Gurus here, for posting in the wrong forum.

A:"Read only file" a pain in the #$%

CD-R medium can only be "read only" by its very nature. It can be written to only once.

CD-RW medium can be ReWritten (reformatted and start again), but its still not Read-Write like a HDD or floppy drive.

Thats why the files are Read Only.

I went to the following link (from the "Please read here first..." thread) http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item10 but was unable to find a download for "hijack this". Does anyone have an alternative link to find Hijack this?

Thank you

EDITED:

A message appeared saying this website wants to run 'ietag.dll' from Microsoft Corp. Is that ok?

P.S. The problem is an increadibly SLOW start up time and "fairly" frequent freezing of the screen (enough to be very frustrating). The computer never goes into hibernate either and I've set it up to do so numerous times. Sometimes, after clicking the IE icon, nothing happens until I click it again a few minutes later. However, it then opens up 2-3 IE windows instead of the original one that I wanted.

I can't get a hijack this log because I can't find the hijack this download. Does the download via the described link, show up for other people?

Hello,
I am getting the following error when moving files on the same drive or from one to another:

"Error Moving File or Folder
Cannot remove folder (insert folder name here): The directory is not empty."

This is fairly common (once or twice a month) and it occurs usually with folders containing many subfolders when being moved by explorer gui "Move the selected items", or ctrl-x, ctrl-v . Repeated attempts through the same process seems to move the folders, but the errors increase as the concentration of stubborn folders increases.

There are no event viewer logs corresponding to these errors. (eventvwr.msc: system, or application)

I would have thought this would be a common problem, but extensive searches came up with nothing... so either it is rare, untroubling to others, extremely easy to fix, or my search queries suck. =)
I am going to run Checkdisk to make sure all is well there, and I will repost the likely failure.

A:"Error moving file or folder" "directory is not empty" one file left

Occasionally when I am deleting a file, it is difficult, I have to go through process explorer, search for the thread that is strangely(?) associated with that file in explorer (no reasonable dependencies could be linked, nor is the file being viewed), and kill the thread before deletion.

any thoughts?

Thanks =)

Hello,

I need help with this Diskette issue please. "Diskette Drive 0 Seek Failure"
I've had this problem a few times in a couple of years and I have been able to fix the error by pressing F2 and going to the SETUP. And I've done this with no issues. But this time I thought I fixed it but now I get this new error: "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". After I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it takes me back to the same error massage "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Need help please. This is a Dell Desktop, Windows XP.
Thank you.

Hi all
Previously the  "Save Picture"  box would put a web generated title in the box and automatically selected JPEG.  Now the title box reads "untitled" and the only file options offered are "png" & "bmp"

Please note that a similar post has appeared, but the solution did not match the fault.  I'm seeking to restore the automatic response to save picture, that might have been upset by antivirus clean-up programme.

Thank youin advance for considering my problem

Hi,
how can I change this?

Some background - this may not be the issue I need to solve at the end of the day:

I believe the location is causing crashes, since I blew up lots of Library registry values (in an attempt to remove them from the OS), and I think it defaults to the library page.

eg, 2shared - file upload and sharing
[edit: stupid editor auto href'd the text... bah]

crashes IE and Firefox (not Chrome for some reason... possibly because it uses its own code?) when I click the browse button (same for any "browse" button that spawns a native find-your-file thing).

It may be something else, but anyway...

edit: If I disable "Expand to Current Folder" in Win Explorer, the crash does not occur. So perhaps it is trying to expand to a folder that is broken?
I want to keep "Expand to Current Folder" on, though, as I like the feature.

A:Default "Browse for file" location in web browser "choose file" box

Hello Silmeria,

It may be best to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before you blew up the registry to see if that may sort this for you. Afterwards, you could use the tutorial below instead to remove libraries without blowing up the registry like that.

Libraries Folder - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane

Hope this helps,
Shawn

When I attempt to copy my OEM release of Windows XP Pro, I get "There has been a read error" and goes on to say that iot may affect the new CD. When I tell it not to continue, it gives me an error that the CD is copyrighted.

I can copy the CD just fine with Easy CD Creator.

Anyone have any enlightening comments about this?

A:Nero: "There has been a read error" also "The CD is Copyrighted"

I see the copyrighted message occasionally with Nero, though it doesn't affect the copy. I've copied XP disks before with no issues. I'd suspect that it's something about your installation of Nero, or it just doesn't like your CD-RW drive.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

XP Home (installed SP2 recently, which MIGHT have something to do with this?).

Just saved two word docs and a bmp file, all separately. All three times I saw that a new location has been added to the Save As drop-down menu. It didn't open to My Documents folder but was in the general folder list of the whole computer. The location was called "FTP File Locations." It's never appeared on the Save As menu before. This made me think of the file/print sharing control, which is now located in the Windows Firewall, but I don't use that Firewall, I turned it off to use Norton. What was FTP Locations? And is there any way to disable file/print sharing without using the Windows Firewall? (These may be the same thing, I don't know.) Also, in Network Connections, I thought I'd find file/print sharing control there, but now XP wants me to run a whole Network Wizard thing..I'm afraid I'll somehow set up a network instead! or enable all kinds of things..I don't want to create a disaster here.

(My son installed an FTP program months ago for work he was doing, but the program was removed. I just searched for it, it's definitely gone.)

This is a stand-alone, non-networked home computer.

P.S. I saved another Word doc and now it's back to opening to My Documents folder as usual..now I can't find the FTP Locations anywhere.

error message.

BUT no problems on my laptap which has the Viewer installed from the
same CD.

Have had a few problems with computer of late - it was in the workshop

problem?

Grateful for any advice, suggestions as to what to do!

This is driving me bonkers and I have almost no hair left. I really hope someone can help.

When I attempt to copy or move a file or folder from my Win7 box to my WinXP (SP3) media server, the operation nearly always fails. Take, for example, my trying to copy the VLC Media Player folder (704 files, 75.1 MB) from Program Files on Win7 to the C: drive on the media server via a mapped drive (X). In all cases, after hanging up at some point during the copy, I get this message:

Network Error
There is a problem accessing X:\<whatever current sub-folder copying is>
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again

I should note here that you only see the message come up if you wait for it (~1 min) after the copy hangs. If you try to cancel the hung copy before the message comes up, you can crash explorer.exe. I must also stress that there are no other access problems on the network. Files on the media server are accessible as expected from the Win7 box. Performing the same copy in reverse ("pulling" the same folder to the XP box from its console instead of "pushing" from Win7) works perfectly. All machines are in WORKGROUP and the same exact credentials are in use on all machines. All machines run the same version of Symantec Endpoint Protection and have firewall rules configured to allow all LAN traffic. All machines are connected through a Linksys SD2005 5-port GB "dumb" switch. Routing/DHCP is provided by a D-Link DI-604. ... Read more

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.
