Dell Inspiron running Windows XP

Q: Dell Inspiron running Windows XP

Trying to get laptop running properly to donate to a community service that needs only internet access. Internet Explorer will not run. Multiple errors that I cannot find resolutions for:

Cocreate Instance failed status is Ox80040154
Runtime error
Error code Of00:136C

I ran all hardware tests and everything checked out. Removed all unused programs.
It's a lot to ask - any help appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Dell Inspiron running Windows XP

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Dell Inspiron running Windows XP

First -- NO ONE should be using XP online for any purpose -- it's been over three years since that OS saw any security updates.
That said, it sounds like the problem is with the networking stack on the system - if you must use it, try reinstalling the network drivers.
That community service organization should be made to understand the potential liabilities of running an insecure OS online -- it isn't hard to imagine personal data being easily compromised if that system is used online.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7. I try to turn on my computer, it goes through the Dell logo screen and comes up to a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the upper left corner and will not go any further. I have pushed F2 and F12 during the Dell logo screen, but nothing there will help me in anyway. I have run the diagnostics for my computer, but it reports no errors, everything passes. I have also tried hitting the F8 and Ctrl+F11 keys during the Dell logo screen, but neither of these do anything, I have the OS disc for reinstallation, but because of the computer not going past the black screen with the white blinking cursor in the upper left corner, I cannot reinstall Windows because it will not restart correctly. What do I do?

A:My Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 won't boot. What do I do?

If you have not run the extended (takes a couple of hours) hard drive test, that's first. F12 at powerup.  IF the drive passes the extended test, then you will likely be faced with a manual install of Windows.  Start by ordering a Windows disc:

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 531 at a garage sale. It came with a version of Vista that was cluttered up, full of viruses and in general full of problems. I don't like Vista anyway (I generally run Kubuntu or Mint for most of my computing), and I have a generic MS Windows XP sp2 install pack laying around. After installing XP, I loaded my linux OS's as usual, with no problems. The problem is with the XP install. It appears that Dell, in it's wisdom, made the Inspiron 531 specifically for Vista and the standard drivers available on Dell's site don't function well with XP (can't connect with the Web, graphics "roll-over" with the bottom showing at the top of the screen, and generally don't work well with the onboard graphics card 'Nvidia GeForce 6150'). Does anyone know a scource for drivers that will 'work-around' this issue? I know that the order the drivers are installed is important, so I wiped the drive and made a fresh install of Windows with no changes. The system setup is: Dell Inspiron 531 with AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ running at 2.0 Ghz with 4Gbs memory. I am set up for triple boot on two HDDs running Kubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint Maya on one 260gb Hd and Windows XP Home edition Sp2 on a 40Gb Hd. I've searched this site and seen mention of a couple of users with XP running on this model, but no mention of the preferred drivers. Dell has been no help, as this is a discontinued model. Thanks ... Read more

Hello:I had a hard drive crash on an Inspiron 5100 running WIndows XP Pro, replaced it with a newer computer, but now need to upgrade a separate machine controller PC that was running W98. That hardware cannot be upgraded past Windows XP.So I formatted the crashed drive from the Inspiron 5100 along with a 2nd hard drive and proceeded to install XP Pro SP2 from an OEM install kit. I installed the product code that came with the OEM kit, but afterward wondered if I should have used the product code that was on the Inspiron 5100 case. I wasn't sure the OEM pack would like a different product code, and I only mention this in case it has anything to do with the setup problems I am having with reincarnating the Inspiron 5100.

hi there,

i am a new user, and since past week my laptop has not been operating correctly. I am not a techie person, but feel I am fairly good with computers in general, but this problem I have is a strange one.

I am using a Dell Inspiron on Vista, and recently every time I start up my laptop, I see the big Dell logo load up as normal, and then it goes to the blue updates screen, and then runs the timer saying 'update 1 of 3' and it will run up to nearly 100% complete for the first update and then the laptop will turn off by itself, restart and then its back to the same updates screen again. This will keep happening continuously each time I switch the system on. Its nothing to do with the power either as this happens even when its plugged in.

One time I actually switched it on (after it being off for 3 days) and it loaded onto the normal Windows menu screen, and I instantly loaded my Kaspersky software to run a scan, which it started, and then the laptop shut down and then again back to the blue updates screen, which it has been doing constantly since then.

I even tried the Diagnostics scan which you do on start up by pressing F12 (I think), which didn't come up with any problems, and then when Diagnostics scan was finished, it again went back to the blue updates screen.

I even tried pressing Ctrl + F11 on switching on the laptop, trying to get it to erase everything and go back to factory standard, but even that wasn't working. I don't mind losing ... Read more

I have run into an incredibly odd issue with my inspiron n17110 while running windows 10. It appears that the dell drivers are malfunctioning, and the result is not pretty.

The graphic driver is not the issue. Dell's software is. I have eliminated both graphic cards from the cause.
What got me to point the finger at dell is that when I press the physical button on the top right of the base that turns off the screen (sort of like a "force to screensaver") is pressed and then the screen woken up, the issue is immediately resolved. I'm fairly disappointing that a device that is less that 4 years old has still not had a critical issue like this resolved yet.
I guess my question is, has anyone else experienced this, and is there any way to fix it for the time being? Thanks!

A:Dell inspiron N7110 running Windows 10- severe graphical issues

Unfortunately, Dell does not have any Windows 10 drivers available for this computer. It has not been tested for the Windows 10 upgrade. You may have issues with the hardware on this computer if you have no Windows 10 drivers.

Just bought an Inspiron 5759 from Dell Canada.
Touchpad is very squirrelly - move around and it randomly perceives a click hence starts moving or invoking stuff.  Try to click left or right button (bottom left or right of touchpad) and the cursor moves so I can click on wrong thing easily.  Looked for Touchpad settings under Control Panel Mouse.  Nothing there specific to touchpad - just generic mouse settings.  Looked in Device Manager - Mouse and Pointing Devices - see HIID compliant mouse and PS2 compatible mouse.   Driver for either is from Microsoft dated 2006.
Ok - load newest driver from dell.com.  Claims it installs ok - wrong.  The Dev Mgr shows same Microsoft drivers.  Manually force driver to Synaptics - Dell TouchPad.  Looks like it succeeds.  Now, Dev Mgr shows two mouse devices: Dell Touchpad and PS2 Compatible mouse.  Try control panel - Mouse.  Now I see a Dell Touchpad tab but the only field - Change Dell Touchpad settings - does nothing.
Spent 6 hours trying to get help from Dell Support - worst experience with any support organisation (other than HP who managed to toast a notebook via remote control while trying to install a printer driver - never did work.)  Absolutely no improvement in situation.  Four times put on hold and line drops.  Considering strongly returning the notebook.
Went to BestBuy and looked at 8 Inspiron  and XPS computers on demo.  Not a sin... Read more

A:Inspiron and XPS laptops running Windows 10 cannot install Dell/Synaptics Touchpad driver

With Win 10, touchpad drivers are found in the Win 10 Settings, selected in the Start Menu. In addition, many newer laptops are using a Precision touchpad, a Microsoft inspired pad. The driver is incorporated in Windows itself, and a regular driver will not work. This is why you don't see anything in the "old" Windows Control Panel app or in the Device Manager.

Anyone recommend a good free program for W10, for monitoring laptop temperature ?.........this Dell Inspiron 1545 seems to be running a little hot.........I seem to remember that when I was running Vista, there was a small App. that sat on the taskbar, but can't remember what it was called...............any recommendations welcomed........Del.

A:Dell Inspiron Running Hot

Speedfan perhaps? There are many..
You can search for
"monitor CPU & GPU temperature freeware"

Check your task manager and see what's using CPU/disk..

Some people have problems with a process called 'System and compressed memory', others with fans running because their PC isn't really compatible with Win 10.

And some older laptops simply get clogged with dust.. as mine may have been.

Depends somewhat if you had this problem since upgrading to '10.

I got a Dell Inspiron 531 with ADM chip. Once I realized that the drivers for most of my peripherals were basic drivers with no advanced features, I tried to run XP on a seperate drive. All I got was a BSOD. I called Dell, who said that they do not warrranty using this combo, but were willing to try. After 2 hours, I gave up and resorted to moving files back to the XP machine when I needed the more advanced features like higher resolution printing. I called the peripheral makers who all said that they were not coming out with full drivers.

Other than using VM ware, any other suggestions?

I have an older Dell Inspiron 1200 running on XP.  Today I did a hard boot and it won't restart.  It goes to the black and white screen with the options for Safe Mode, Last Known Config, and Start Windows Normally.  I tried all of the choices and it goes around and around and returns to the same screen endlessly.
I noticed that there is a BRIEF flash of the blue screen for checking the disc but it then goes back to the endless restarts.
Do I need to go into BIOS and reboot from disc?
Thank You!

I don't have any important files I will lose, since I back up everything, but just in terms of time I would prefer a recovery versus an entire reformat.  Is this possible, or does it sound like I have a bad hard drive?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how to imporve the responsiveness of this laptop.

A:Dell Inspiron 6000 running XP very slow

you probably have a lot of startup programs running. there are 2 areas to look at.

1. click on "start" then "all programs" then "startup". that folder should be empty.

2. click on "start" then "run" then when the run box opens type in "msconfig" then hit enter. You will see a bunch of tabs, click on the one labeled startup. This is a list of all the programs that startup when you logon to your computer. uncheck the ones that you do not want to start at startup. reboot your computer and you should notice a difference.

Dell Inspiron; 1.4 Ghz processor; 248 MB RAM; 40 GB HDD running too slowly. An interesting thing is: today I purchased (for two computers), installed and ran SUPERAntiSpyware on it and on a Toshiba Satellite. I ran it on both at the same time while I had them side by side. While it scanned the Toshiba (which has 4x as much memory and a much bigger HDD with many more programs on it) in half an hour - - it was still scanning Memory Items on the Dell after three hours. This program scans Memory Items first, then Registry Items, then Files. It only found 648 Memory Items on the Toshiba to scan, but after three hours had found over 600,000 Memory Items and was still going at what looked like lightning speed, so fast you couldn't read what it was scanning. Question is: sometimes when you try to run two programs at once, the Dell often says it doesn't have enough available memory to run things - - even though it's seldom running more than one thing at a time, and after the thing this morning with SUPERAntiSpyware, I wondered if we have a problem with memory that's causing the computer to run so slowly? Even the Internet creeps along on the Dell, while it works fine on the Toshiba (we have DSL). The Dell is just used for studies and for email - - no photos, graphics, music or video.

Hello everyone -

My laptop is running extremely slow and I'm trying to work out what's wrong. The start up procedure takes at least 5-10 minutes (it used to take only a couple) and accessing files/programs is an exercise in patience. Another concern is the fact that my computer is constantly accessing my harddrive (my "thinking" light is solid, spending most of the time on and not off). Any assistance with either of these concerns would be greatly appreciated!

I have been using Win 10 for about a month now. Since Sunday night I belieThis issue has been hapenning since this week when I updated to A13 BIOS from dell's website. I believe its the chipset driver update that caused it.
I have tried:
- tweaking power options and selecting what power button does, it doesn't work, fan still running after shutdown
- reverted back to A12 bios, doesn't work, fan still running
- Uninstalled the 3 Intel drivers from control panel (as suggested on this forum by others).... doesn't work on mine.
This is not due to Win 10 because it was all fine for 3 weeks on Win 10. It is because, I believe, it happened after I updated the Bios to A13 and also the chipset driver on Dell's website using auto detect.
Can someone help me? I feel so helpless. I have been wasting my entire 2 days on forums and still there's little hope. My fan has been running for too long. Every night I work with 100% charge and in the morning it's down to 0.
Help would be appreciated.

I've got a sick laptop ... hoping you can help. It's a four year old Dell Inspiron 9300 running XP/SP3. The infection is preventing me from accessing any Microsoft or anti-virus company web sites. Also, as the PC runs it eventually disables the Windows managed wireless network. Two other symptoms...
- When using Explorer the screen will flash and then the menus get blacked out.
- The sound card gets spontaneously disabled.

This all started happening during a period of time when I had no anti-virus software running. I've had the Firewall running on my router and the Windows XP Firewall running all along and I stay away from obvious problem websites (no porn ... really!). Now I can't get updated virus protection loaded to the machine. I was able to install Malwarebytes software but it couldn't update the definitions and it didn't find any problems.

I have an external drive I use for backups that I was concerned might be infected but I've scanned it using McAfee on another PC and it hasn't found anything. (Fortunately that machine isn't showing any signs of being sick, either.)

I've been preparing to do a full Windows restore if necessary, but that's a pain and I don't know if it'll even solve the problem.

I've run SDFix, ComboFix and RootRepeal and have the reports available.

I received a Dell Inspiron 27 7000 all-in-one pc early this week. I have used it in the last couple of nights (very light usage). The machine randomly goes black screen quite a few times every day. I can only force shut down the machine in order to reboot when the problem occurs. What's even worse, there are different issues when I try to start it again. Sometimes it complains I am using a non-genuine AC power adapter but of course I am. Other times it just shows different colors in full screen mode. Then the only way to start the machine is by unpluging it from the powerpoint for a few minutes so it somehow restarts from scratch.
Another interesting observable was: When I was doing skype screen sharing with my friend last night, it suddently had the black screen problem. I could still talk to my friend but no longer able to see the screen. Because I was sharing the screen, my friend saw the error message on my screen: Power surge on USB Port. Not sure if it's relevant but I looked it up online . Tried reinstall all the USB controllers but did not help.
I have also done all the windows updates, dell updates, drive updates but the problem remains unfixed.
I am an IT professional so good at troubleshooting most of the problems. This one seems to be a defect in the hardware/drivers.
Can any one please help?Thank you in advance.

Some of the newer systems, such as my XPS 9365 have something called modern standby.  If you are not aware a system will seem to behave strangely.
To find out if you have it, open an Admin command prompt and type powercfg /a to see if it is capable of normal sleep.  If it says connected standby in the first set of listings, it will behave differently.

Hello. I hope all is well.
I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 that I think is finally ready for the scrap yard.
Even though I backed up the data, my 9100 system still has some old files that didn't carry over with the back-up. For instance, my Outlook Express archived old emails, somehow, and now I need access to a message I receive pre-archive. It isn't in the back-up data. So, I need a way to search my old system, within the files, to find the email.

Unfortunately, that system does not provide, from what I can tell, an option to search within the file contents. So, I need to figure it out.

The only computer search option I can find is the integrated Windows Search by file name or folder.

This is important so please respond as soon as possible.

My Dell INS-N4110 laptop has been around for roughly 5 years. It's no powerhouse but I wouldn't call it much of a slouch either. Just recently, it's started randomly getting slow; games would lag and even Chrome would run like it was being processed on a Win98. Pulling the power and taking out the battery for a few minutes fixed the problem a few times, but now it's not even succumbing to that.

After doing a reboot with all of the original services/startup programs (did this by accident, mind you) ? Dell Quickset was re-enabled and a message popped up telling me that my AC power adapter could no longer be recognized and that I needed to plug in an official 65W charger. This IS the original charger the laptop came with. Okay, so I need a new charger; that should be a 2 week wait. HOWEVER, Dell's shadiness showed itself when I found out that until a new charger is plugged in, the system throttles down the CPU which is the exact reason why my games/programs are underperforming.

Is there any way that I can bypass this and get the laptop back to its original speed until I can get my hands on a charger?

Do you have a CD in the drive by chance? USB stick plugged in?
Has the machine been dropped or hit or fluids spilled on it?
Any power surges lately while machine was connected to power?
Try reseating your RAM. It should be fairly easy to do. Google it if you have difficulties.

To whom it may concern...
My brother in laws daughter was playing games and has accidentally pressed some wrong button on his laptop changing the orientation of the monitor image. I'm a MacUser running Vista on Parallels... and I have been trying to figure out how to fix it for them. I have gone into Control Panel and then into Monitors... as I was hoping there would be a setting to rotate the monitor view.... but no such luck. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this... as his daughter also needs to have it working for school assignments.

Any comments most welcome...

It can probably also be done where you are looking, but only for those monitors/cards/drivers that allow it.

I found an old Dell Inspiron 530a in my house, it was stored because it didn’t work anymore, so I got in the job of restoring it. I found out the problem was the PSU, so I replaced it and it worked fine for about a week but 2 days ago, the computer froze for almost 2 hours, so I turned off the CPU. After that, the computer does not want to boot, I press the power button on the front of the PC, and it remains in an orange light, and in the inside, there is also another orange light in the Motherboard. The fans start very loudly and don’t stop until I unplug the CPU or I turn it off from the power button. I have tried these “solutions” for what I think is the problem:
Removing the Motherboard battery
Removing the RAM
Disconnecting the 24-pin from the motherboard
Disconnecting everything from the PSU
Switching the jumpers near the batteries
I don’t know what the problem might be, but I am almost sure that the PSU is not, since I bought it with a higher capacity than the original PSU and I have done the tests with a jumper in the 24-pin connector
The new PSU is a  “Coolmax V-500 Series 500W 120mm ATX Power Supply” and everything else are original Inspiron 530a parts.
Thanks for any assistance you can give me

We just recently purchased a new computer but am struggling to get our printer installed.  My printer works on my desktop ( I work from home so yes I have a desktop).  The printer also works with our other laptop via USB. Something happened sometime back that disrupted our Wi-Fi connection so I just never got it back up and running.   Anyway, we have this brand new laptop. I have been on the Support website and downloaded the drivers. save the files to the computer , unzipped them and executed the setup. The printer shows on my computer but it still says the drivers are missing.  It doesn't work hooking it up to the USB port etc....

I am ready to send my new computer back...so frustrated.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.
