Java won't work - work Tech Support have despaired

Q: Java won't work - work Tech Support have despaired

I'm running a Dell E510 with XP Media Center Edition, and I teach College courses online using WebCT. I won't go into an anti-WebCT rant right now, however tempting that is.
Anyway, several major features of WebCT simply won't work on my computer, because they depend on Java.

Most (but not all) Java applets simply won't run on my computer. I click the button for, say, WebCT email, and nothing happens. At all.

I have uninstalled everything Java related and installed the latest Java. My anti-Pop-Up software is disabled. I have done everything short of sacrifice chickens to Satan. Nothing I've found elsewhere on this forum works.

My College tech guys have given up, though one of them whispered in my ear the other day that I'm not the only one with this problem. I could ask WebCT, but that would need a seance.

Anyone got any suggestions, as this is driving me totally nuts and making my job impossible?

Preferred Solution: Java won't work - work Tech Support have despaired

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I downloaded BuzMe Free and had call forward on busy activated last week. It shows online on the BuzMe site that call forwarding has not been activated although I've called the phone company and verified twice that it has. The phone company has also repeated the toll-free number to me twice and they have it right

When I contact tech support at BuzMe, I get an auto-reply. I've followed all of the steps, but when I reply to the message as directed ("If these don't solve your problem, email us at...."), but I keep getting the same auto message. Also, if I click the link in the email ("I've set up my call forwarding but I'm not being notified of incoming calls. Why?" - click here), but get a syntax error.

Has anyone had this trouble? Does anyone know what information I may be missing at the site that will help me solve this problem?

Sometimes I want to beat the crap out of people that follow scripts when it comes to tech support.

I had a guy tell me to use this site here to update my driver for my motherboard chipset.
So I did so. And just like it says, I had an Nvdia so I downloaded it. Deleted the old drivers rebooted, and installed the new ones. Then rebooted again.

Well... I now have no sound. At all. The multimedia audio controller under device manager has the "!" showing that its not working. I know I downloaded the right file. At least, according to that website and the CPU-Z program. So I'm now lost. Don't know where to get a driver to get the sound working or if thats even what I need.

Oh, and none of my Ethernet Controllers are working either. Amazing how when you go to get help, they make things worse.

A:Sound doesn't work after tech support help.

Great article and I hate how these people do this kind of thing to innocent civilians by taking advantages of their knowledge. But the main question is how are they able to get the victim phone number? I been received numerous of phone called from these kind of people and the first thing they said is this: " Hi my name is blah blah blah, and we're from Microsoft Technical Department. Our server have received several reports from your computer and based on your reports it show signs your computer been infected with a virus." But good thing is I able to keep them on the phone for 30 minutes and at the end the scammer curse me with profanity words and I replied this: " Thank you for compliment, and you know? I able to keep you on the phone for 30 minutes so you can't scam other 30 innocent people."

I'm having a bit of trouble using Java anywhere other than in a web browser. Java works fine in Firefox, I use it often, but it's been a while since I've run a standalone Java applet.

The problem is this: opening any standalone applet, even ones that worked before, simply produce a "Windows XP Critical Stop" error sound with no visual activity whatsoever. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Java many times, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

The applets work fine on an older computer with the latest Java, the same version as on the one with the problem, so it could be one of those well hidden configuration files or outdated .dll's. If you could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

I keep receiving calls from fake MICROSOFT Tech support with various telephone numbers. Strange, they do not show up in my phone on line logs. They wanted me to go to FASTSUPPORT\763721586 ( do not use  these numbers). I have XP Home installed, and after running a couple programs I downloaded from PC World to clean up my system and registry, the Help and Support feature of XP no longer works no matter how I try and access it.

Any advice on how to get it working again?

A:XP Help & Support does not work

One thing I could think of to try first would be to press start, run, and then enter "services.msc". Press enter. See if "Help and Support" is "Automatic" under the "Startup Type" column. If it is "Disabled", this may be the problem. The description for Help and Support in the services screen is "Enables Help and Support Center to run on this computer. If this service is stopped, Help and Support Center will be unavailable....".

Hope this helps....

I've been struggling with this for about a month. Ever since I updated Java, IE8 most pages requiring Java tell me I don't have the latest version installed or Java is not installed at all. When I go to Sun to test Java, it says I have the latest version and it's working properly! Argh!
I've read a bunch of posts about this and tried a myriad of things to resolve. I uninstalled, disabled my anti-virus, turned off UAC, rolled back to a previous restore point, rebooted a gazillion times, reinstalled from a downloaded file... NOTHING seems to work.
The really frustrating thing is that Java is working superbly in Chrome, but not IE8. Does anyone have any suggestions for me, other than stick with Chrome? ;-)

My system:
Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
IE8 (32-bit version) 8.0.6001.188865

If you have the java console enabled, which you can do thru Settings/Control Panel/Java Plug-in, you should be able to tell what error messages are being thrown when the app attempts to load.
If you tell us what error messages are being thrown we can possibly tell you
what's wrong.

I am having similar problems with Java as well. I can see the Java Console in Tools in IE7 but it doesn't do anything when I click on it and pages that I use that require are having problems opening and to be quite honest, it's slowing the whole laptop down. I have encountered this problem quite a few times but I could never find a way of rectifying it to work on a permanent basis . Some of the better Broadband speed tests that I use require Java and won't work without it now because of this problem. I am using Windows Live OneCare if that makes any difference? When I try to use the Help menu in IE6 and I go to HELP>>CONTENTS AND INDEX and then click on any help item in the left pane, it will open the Help article. However, when I then click at the bottom of the page where it says "RELATED ARTICLES", instead of taking me to any articles,I get the dreaded Script error. I have already tried all of the fixes I can find online for debugging script errors and still it persists.

So, tried to access Help articles a different way:

When I again go to Help and Support, this time thru the Start menu for my computer (HP Pavilion a808x) and try to access the "Related Articles" links there, I don't get a script error, instead it does nothing but open another little notebook icon where it says "NOTES" You can click it as many times as you want and it will just open rows of the little NOTE icon without opening any related articles at all.

what could be causing this odd behaviour? It's been doing it for ages and I just now bothered to try and find out why.

BTW, it's not virus related I don't believe, as I have recently been helped by a friendly Bleeping computer HJT team member and we have cleaned and spruced my system within an inch of it's life, ha ha!

Any ideas on why the script error would keep popping up in the IE6 help menu, or why in the HP Help and Support area, the very same problem persists, just no script error this time, only no relate... Read more

I'm wanting to know if Windows XP SP2 Support Tools (found here) will work on a machine that has already upgraded to SP3. It seems like it would, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience or insight into this?

On a similar note, does anyone know where these tools can be found for Win 7 or Vista? I've heard that the ones for Windows Server 2003 will run on Vista, but not sure. And I don't have a machine w/ vista to test it.

There are some tools included in this download that may prove useful when working with users over in the Virus/Malware threads.

Since you still are in training, you should stay with only the tools TSF provides/says to use.

public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
Object source = e.getSource();
if (source == exitButton)
else if (source == calculateButton){
//double product = Double.parseDouble(productTextField.getText());
double wholesale = Double.parseDouble(wholesaleTextField.getText());
int markup = Integer.parseInt(markupTextField.getText());
double amount = (wholesale * markup);
//return amount;
//double = wholesale/12/100;
//int months = markup * 12;
//double total = FinancialCalculations.calculateMonthlyPayment(
//months, monthlyInterest);
//NumberFormat currency = NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance();
}//end try

Hello all,

I am setting up a user so they can use an applet that will ONLY work with Sun Java 1.4. They already had 1.5 on their machine. I uninstalled 1.5 and then installed 1.4 (on the Administrator account). They applet works, but only for the administrator. The user account simply says "Java not installed". I have reinstalled 1.5 and reuninstalled... then reinstalled 1.4. No luck. The only difference I could tell was in the Manage Add-ons. It has Java plug-in ssv.dll, which is not what the Admin account has. Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on here?!?!

A:Downgrade From Sun Java 1.5 To 1.4 - Won't Work

Hello,Have you tried dragging the folder into the Shared Documents folder? If not, open My Computer, click the local drive, such as C:\ , find the Program Files folder and open it. Then find the folder that contains the Sun Java files, probobly named Java, open it, and choose the version that you wish to share. Simply Click-hold and drag it into the Shared Folder and release the mouse button to drop it.This should make it accessable to all users. You may want to open up two instances of Windows Explorer, with one left at the My Computer location so that the Shared Documents folder is visible, and the other to navigate through your files. If you open both windows, without minimizing either one, you can Right-Click the taskbar and select Tile Windows Vertically so that when it is time to Drag and Drop, both files will be in plain view for the exchange.Hope this helps,nos

Hello, not sure if this question belongs here but I think its browser related.

I have an IP camera where in I can view the live video via browser but it is setup with Java.

I noticed that if my internet is down, I can't view the video feed even if its on my local network... But when my internet is working it loads up right away..

Is there a way to make Java applets work even if the internet is down?

Here is a sample html source code from the IP camera browser page -

<applet name="cvcs" codeBase="https://camerasIPaddress" archive="aplug.jar" code="aplug.class" width=640 height=480>
<param name="Timeout" value=5000>
<param name="RotateAngle" value=0>
<param name="PreviewFrameRate" value=2>
<param name="Algorithm" value="1">

I have Windows XP, Compaq Presario, AMD Sempron processor, and IE7. (Well actually, I'm on Firefox now, but it freezes when a Java applet loads, so my mom uses IE for Java games.) She downloaded Java 6 a few days ago and since then, Pogo.com tells us Java's not found when we try to load a game. It works everywhere else, so why not Pogo.com? It's beginning to really irritate me. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Java about 15 times now. I've uninstalled Norton, which I've been told can cause problems playing Pogo games. (Don't need it anyway, I've got AVG. Much less of a pain.) I've made sure it's enabled for IE. I've done everything and NOTHING works. I've Googled all over the place, and I've yet to find a solution I didn't already try that actually applied to my computer.

My mom's very upset. She's a retired factory worker and games on Pogo are one of the few things she enjoys anymore, and she hasn't been able to play them since Monday. I'm quite annoyed with her lately for getting Java 6 and getting us into this mess in the first place.

Need help please!

A:Java 6 won't work with Pogo.com

Hi shady pines ma,Please don't be upset with your mother for getting the latest version of Java--that isn't the problem and in fact it is highly recommended to keep the latest version of Java and get rid of the old ones as hard to remove infections are know to get in thru vulnerablities of old Java versions. As a matter of fact a new version came out a few days ago so you need to get Java up to version 6 update 13.You didn't mention cleaning out the Java cache--this will often help with Java game applet problems. I keep a copy of ATF Cleaner on my desktop just for this purpose--it clears the cache very quickly, just be sure to have your browser closed beforehand. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secu...F-Cleaner.shtmlPogo will recommend clearing your Java cache and Temporary Internet Files--the others you don't have to clean unless you want to. If you've been using an older version of Java there are some cache folders that ATF won't clean, so you might need to try the much more powerful CCleaner that will. http://www.ccleaner.com/CCleaner will clean more than I think is necessary, so be careful--you can get by with just having it clean browser cache, temp files and Java cache. The only reason I use it is because it will also clean index.dat in IE's cache and the old Java cache.Is your mother a member of Club Pogo or does she have a free account? If a free account I would suggest she find another place to play her games. I have a free a... Read more

Hi there,

Java does not work in IE. It works perfectly fine with Firefox, which I usually use. I have to use IE in order to use my banks online banking add on.

I am running Windows 7 Professional 32bit, IE 8/9 32bit, Java 32bit
I have tried the following:

-Reinstalled IE
-Downgraded from IE9 to IE 8
-Updated Java
-De- and Reinstalled Java

-turned off active x filtering
-turned on compatibility view
-turned all security settings to lowest level

-Made sure java is enabled in IE
-Made sure java is enabled for IE in the Java console (although suspiciously IE is listed in grey and i can't unselected it)

I basically have the same problem with flash in IE. Again, everything works fine in firefox. I really wouldn't care because I don't like using IE at all. I just need it for that one task and the menu of the online banking site uses java.

I would appreciate any clue I can get. Thanks.

I think what I mean is actually Java script. Anyhow: it is popup windows and shifting menus that don't work.

A:My Java won't work on my laptop.

This is a problem with the Windows Installer service
I I would suggest you to unregister and re-register Windows installer, and check if it helps:
i. On the "Start" menu, Type Run in the search bar and hit enter.
ii. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.
iii. On the "Start" menu, Type” Run” in the search bar and hit enter.
iv. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.
I would also suggest you to run System File Checker and see if it helps, here are the steps:
1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.
2. Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.
3. In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:
sfc /scannow
