Security Updates Extended Support For Windows 7?

Q: Security Updates Extended Support For Windows 7?

When support ended for Windows XP Professional SP3 in April 2014, it was announced that extended support would be available for it until April 2019 - another 5 years.

With support ending for Windows 7 SP1 in January 2020, it has been announced that extended support will be available for it until January 2023 - another 3 years.

This is newly-released information, so details and pricing have not yet been made available.

Note: It appears to apply only to Windows 7 Professional/Enterprise users, so Windows 7 Home Premium/Ultimate users appear to be out of luck.

Preferred Solution: Security Updates Extended Support For Windows 7?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I spoke with the VLSC and they told me that to be able to install ESUs onto windows 7 installations that we would need to do the following:

Purchase a single licenses of Windows 10 with software assurance to get imaging rights and downgrade supportReimage each windows 7 system in the curstomer environment with the volume license service center windows 7 image iso

I would expect the updates since they are basically downloaded from a portal to install on pretty much any current install of Windows 7.  Am I correct that we would be able to have the MSP (assuming they have software that can deploy the ESUs) push
out the updates downloaded from the ESU portal to our clients current Windows 7 OEM installs or is VLSC correct in that every system would have to be reinstalled with a new volume license image before the ESUs could be installed on the system?

With extended support ending January 14th, 2020 for Windows 7 and MS's Extended Security Updates thru January 2023 - does anyone know how that will work if we are using a WSUS server for distributing updates? Does anyone know if we would just have to pay
for the WSUS server(s) for extended security updates or how will that work? I can't seem to find any information on that.

Will Windows 7 patches even be listed in the wsusscn2 file after Jan 20, 2020? This is presuming that I have purchased the extended support of course. Thank you

Hi everybody.
As we all know, Windows Vista is no longer supported by Microsoft in any way, shape or form. This means there will be no more updates for it. There is some good news, though. Due to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 sharing the same codebase, it is possible to install WS2008 security updates on Vista. This way you might be able to receive security updates until January 2020.
In this thread, I will compile a list of monthly updates for WS2008, and provide feedback on how the installation process went on a virtual machine running Win Vista x64. If you're interested and want to take this opportunity, be my guest, though be advised that while the updates will most likely install successfully, you're still doing this at your own risk.
Please note that if you are having problems with Windows Update taking hours or days to check for updates, and/or consuming your CPU, please check this thread.
So without further ado, this is a list of WS 2008 updates for the month of May 2017 that I attempted to install on Win Vista. In general I've provided Microsoft Update Catalog links which allow you to choose either the 32 bit or 64 bit version, however, for .Net installers, I've provided direct download links separately to avoid Microsoft's stupid and confusing bundling of updates, which lumps updates with different KB numbers together. You will need to download them and install manually, as Windows Update will NOT find them. Vista is... Read more

I am about ready to upgrade from windows 7 to 10, however was shocked to see
support for pro ending May 11, 2021 (ver 1809). Is this a firmware version?

Last year I recall seeing an end date years later than this, ( 2o23/2025?)
Why or how the quick switch (legal?)

I see enterprise ends 2025/2026 but this is for on a single desktop.

Someone was telling me today that other versions will be coming without any mention of commitment from Microsoft.

How to get Win 1o with the furthest extended support?

BTW - has Microsoft ever issued a statement on the release date of Windows 12?

I have few questions on Windows server 2003, extended support for security updates. If I have the code, may be you can consider I am from a business company, who purchased extended support from MS for server 2003. Where can I use this code to get the security
update from these servers.
Question 2: If I am using the tool SHAVLIK to patch my customers, where can I use this code. \
So, basically where can I use this code to get the update for server 2003.

We need to turn off EPA at the client level to get some of our apps to work in Chrome using Windows integrated authentication using ADFS 2.1 as Chrome doesn't support EPA. This applies to the Office 365 portal as well as some apps we wrote ourselves
that use SAML.

 As per https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976918 we've set
Key Name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA
Value Name: SuppressExtendedProtection
to 0x01 and it works on windows 7 / IE9. Doesn't even require a reboot, just to restart Chrome.

This doesn't work on windows 8.1 / IE11.

Some questions:
- no mention anywhere of whether EPA applies on Win 8.  All MS article about EPA refer back to the base KB for XP /2003 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/968389).
- does SuppressExtendedProtection work on Win8.1
are the registry values 0,1 and 3 or 0, "0x01." and "0x03." as suggested in the KB976918. (you can't type these in - you have to paste them in and the reg editor converts them to some other hex value...)

Hi everyone!

Does anyone know when Microsoft will end support for all the Windows 8.1 Pro security patches and updates?
All I know, that Mainstream Support ends on January 2018 for Windows 8.1.
But does it mean that Security Updates will stop as well on that date?

I am also just a home user and not an Enterprise user of Windows 8.1.
Thanks in advance!

I've been using the new extended disk cleanup for over a year now with no problems. Occasionally it will find Windows Updates that have been superseded, and remove them. Yay!!

BUT, upon using Disk Cleanup yesterday, it removed 4 RECENT, REQUIRED updates that had to be re-installed.

It removed:
2 Windows Security Updates from February 2015 (KB3004375 and KB3031432)
1 IE Cumulative Update from February 2015 (KB3021952)
1 IE Cumulative Update from March 2015 (only 2 days old) (KB3032359)

Even after reinstalling them, the 2 Security Updates did not "take" and had to be RE-RE-installed.

So, something has recently been broken as far as Disk Cleanup being able to reliably decide which updates are safe to delete.

-Win7 64-bit Home Premium
-AMD laptop that has previously never had any windows update problems or glitches

EDIT: more info for the truly interested, Windows "knew" the updates had been mistakenly removed, because immediately after rebooting, but before even having a network connection, WU appeared in the system tray and said "4 updates are available"

A:FYI: Extended Disc Cleanup has started killing recent Windows Updates

Yes, I have had the same problem. Those updates were installed in my case in Feb 15 & I ran Win Disc Clean Up yesterday & this morning Windows Updates reinstalled them again.

It seems that Update Clean Up may be removing some updates that it shouldn't or there is something in the updates that are not shielded from removal.

I will just keep this in mind for future reference, in case it happens again.

The main stream support for windows 7 is going to end on 13th jan 2015,what does it mean?Would I not be able to get the security updates for free of cost?

A:What is the difference between mainstream and extended support?

each operating system or software has a support life cycle main stream support is support that is given in that life cycle period and extended support is when they give you stop date of support but they will still give support with conditions until the date specified.
so to clear things up Main stream support is support given during life cycle period (main Frame)
and extended support is the last period of support that is being offered usually conditions met IE to have support for the extended period of time you would require service pack to with windows vista (that would be a condition)
hope this helps

Hi there,
I have been using the Microsoft speech recognition within MS Word XP as means of inputting text. All works well, but on my other computer I am able to extend support of advanced text services to all programs, so i can talk to any program that allows text input. However, on this computer, I am unable to do this.
The setting should be under Control Panel - Regional and Language Options - Languages Tab - Details - Advanced Tab
But when I get to the language details box, there is no advanced tab. Why isn't it there, and how can I get it?
Thanks a lot,

We have an Optiplex 7440 AIO that needs to be setup as a tutorial PC in a teaching space.  There are also two projectors that display the image on the wall.  Both of the 7440 video outputs consisting of one HDMI and one DP (which is converted to HDMI) are delivered down to a Crestron switcher which pushes the output to the 2 projectors via a different topology.
The actual configuration is a little more complicated than this, but I have simplified to the above configuration in order to troubleshoot.
Now what we need is to have a clone of the main 7440 screen on one projector and the 2nd projector having an extension of the desktop so they can display extra charts/windows.  When going into Windows Display settings, all three screens are detected and are in an extended state which is all good. When attempting to modify the setup and clone the 7440 image with either screen 2 or screen 3, an error is reported "Unable to save display settings".
I have updated the video driver to (A08) and also BIOS 1.7.6, but the problem still exists.
Is it possible to have a mix of extended and cloned displays such as this on this model?
Looking forward to your reply

I'm still new here, so I'm not sure if this is the proper place to post this.

I cut my teeth years ago on Basic and Cobol. Loved CPM (remember that) and Unix (user friendly). Even dabbled with Commodore and Amiga. Migrated to MS 3.1 all the way to 6.0., Win 95a and b, Win 98 and SE. I tried but didn't use MS' ME, what a MEss (this was really Win 98 3rd edition - a fill in between OSes - my, how imaginative and creative!). But, in all fairness, it does take an army of people and money to write code for current operating systems, even if they do come out flawed....too many people in the kitchen?

MS, as you know, no longer provides support for Win98SE. And now we come to this (I just thought you'd like to know): Microsoft announces - "Windows 2000 moves into Extended Support after June 30th, 2005". Read some of the comments here (and of all things at MS' own IE Blog site!): http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/05/27/422721.aspx I am forever amazed! If this keeps up, the Linux world shall surely descend upon us by default. It seems that the browser war that MS fought so hard to monopolize has finally backfired on them. By having integrated IE so tightly into the OS (to prove to themselves that IE really was a part of the OS, as they so $artfully$ argued in court after the browser wars) they created a lovely portal by which any number of internet nasties could enter OUR computers. Reading the various Hijack postings here attests to this ... Read more

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

After April 11, 2017, Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Vista operating system. After this date, this product will no longer receive:

Security updates,
Non-security hotfixes,
Free or paid assisted support options, or
Online technical content updates from Microsoft.

Computers running the Windows Vista operating system will continue to work even after support ends. However, using unsupported software may increase the risks of viruses and other security threats.
Remark:   Due to negative reviews and extreme LACK of popularity, there are relatively few Vista users still remaining (percentagewise).

How to temporarily prevent a Windows or driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10

"In Windows 10, your device is always kept up to date with the latest features and fixes. Updates and drivers are installed automatically, with no need to select which updates are needed or not needed. In rare cases, a specific driver or update might temporarily cause issues with your device, and in this case you will need a way to prevent the problematic driver or update from reinstalling automatically the next time Windows Updates are installed."

This tool can be used on Windows 10 and Windows 10 Insider Preview.

Microsoft Security Updates CD (Free)

"MS have finally announced the release of this CD which will update all version of Windows from Win98. It contains SP1 for XP as an example, as well as many more recent critical updates to about October 2003 - and it is free.
This CD is only available for Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE).

Apparently the UK version is not available from the above url.

The UK version can be ordered from this url however you will need a NET Passport to order it.

According to the web page it also includes trial versions of Antivirus & firewall software for those without those applications

I recommend everybody to order it, especially if you have problems getting to update due to slower connections

Read a Brink thread on IE9 and a question percolated.

Internet Explorer is part of Windows 7 and can't be uninstalled, merely "turned off". I don't use IE and I have it turned off at the earliest possibility.

A few years back, when I used ATI/AMD's control panel's links, IE would run to access the hyperlinks, instead of the default browser. Very disturbing! I have not encountered that scenario since then. Relief!

I did a return-to-factory install in March and according to the update history, Windows Update has not pushed a Security Update for Internet Explorer onto my system.

Is my system relatively secure in regards to the unpatched Internet Explorer that is integral to Windows 7?

A:Windows 7 + IE Security Updates

Hello Gigggles,

I would recommend completely updating IE to 9, with all patches, and simply setting another browser as your default. The truth is that windows itself often will use IE, refusing to use all other browsers. This won't hurt anything, it is just how it is set up. No reason to disable IE completely, even from a security standpoint.

The security factor would come into play with the browser you run most of your websites from. Make sure that browser is completely updated at all times, and all important or critical windows updates are installed.

So my suggestion would be, once again, to update everything, and just use the browser you are most comfortable with.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me/ point me in the right direction what caused microsoft to release so many security updates across all systems on Wednesday?

I have heard that these were triggered because of a new virus or similar and I have been having issues with my pc(s) for a few weeks now, so I thought I may have picked up the problem pre update...

I'll post my issue with the PC's in the network forum if you are interested.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, hopefully someone can help and advise how I overcome this problem.  I successfully registered for windows 10 upgrade which has been downloaded to my PC but I'm not in the position to install the new Windows. However I still want to install the recent windows 7 updates which came in on the 8th September. How can I do this with out installing Windows 10.

A:Windows 7 Security Updates

Hello.  I am still on Windows 7 as well.  What I have been doing, with both the August and September "Black Tuesday" Windows updates, was/is go to the Optional Updates section and uncheck Windows 10 update, then I go to the Important updates and check all of the Windows 7 updates and install them.  I have not had any issues.  It has worked both times.
I am hanging off on doing the Windows 10 update for now, waiting for it to become a bit more stable, even though I have "reserved" my copy.
Hope this helps, and have a great day.

My operating system is WIN XP Home(SP2). It is NOT a pirated copy but came already installed in the Medion M3 Composer 4215 PC when I purchased it. I have attempted over the last three days, to download the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) however these downloads failed. The security updates released by MS on Tuesday 13 June were downloaded without problem but again the Genuine Advantage Notification download failed.
Can someone please suggest any way I may overcome this problem. TYI, mchaggis.
