Stop auto download of Windows 10 into $Windows.~BT

Q: Stop auto download of Windows 10 into $Windows.~BT

I don't want Windows 10, and have tried to disable/hide all updates that would install it to my computer. I have been at least partially successful; I no longer see the blue rectangular nag screen promoting Win 10.

Today, I was horrified to discover a hidden, 6 gig $Windows.~BT file folder on my C:\ drive, last modified today. I assume that this is for Win 10, and that Microsoft is using my bandwidth to railroad this OS into my computer despite my best efforts to say no.

I found a SuperUser thread indicating that I can delete this directory by: a) Press Windows key + R
b) Type: %windir%\system32\cleanmgr.exe
c) Hit Enter on your keyboard
I haven't tried this, don't know if it works, and am afraid that I'll make the 6 gig download start all over again.
Is there a way to get rid of these files once and for all, and insure that they never come back again?
Thank you in advance for your feedback!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

don't worry, that is just windows update logs, it should be fine to delete.

My USB Plantronics microphone mutes automatically.  It's not the device driver, I have uninstalled and reinstalled it.  When the mic mutes while using another program, I get an error messages that states another application has muted this mic,
would you like to unmute.  It mutes every minute or so, by itself.  I have searched all over the web and tried every trouble shooting problem.  I have no svchost.exe to disable, I have unchecked in the advanced recording levels to not allow
other applications to take exclusive control.  I have downloaded and run the malwarebytes program.  It's not the headset because I have tried it in another another desktop and another laptop and it works fine.  It's this computer, Dell with
windows 7.  It didn't always do this.  I believe this problem started this after I upgraded IE to 10 then downgraded back to 9.  I need IE 9 for compatibility reasons with other work programs.
Please, whatever application is taking over my mic, please tell me how to get rid of it.

I have been having problems with windows XP auto redialing my ISP after I have been auto-disconnected by my ISP after my aloted time block is up. I have made sure the never dial property is checked and that the auto-redial if line is dropped is also unchecked. Please help me to sort out this problem as it reconnects and I can get Internet Explorer to function nor any other program that is internet related and have to disconnect manually and reboot before I can again have fully use of the net by windows etc. Please help me sort out ths problem

A:Stop Windows XP auto redialing

I know you said you unselected the "Auto Dial if connection is dropped" setting but did you set the one for the DUN connectiod for your ISP or the global setting? Changing the global setting won't change the setting on any DUN connectoids already in existance at the time. See if it is unselected for your ISP DUN connectoid.

Click on Start>Settings>ControlPanel>NetworkConnections. Once your network connections are displayed, Right click on the one for your ISP and select Properties. Now click on the "Options" tab and unselect "Redial if line dropped".

A:How to stop auto-maximizing windows

Click on the IE icon that you use to bring up your homepage. Mine is tacked to the task bar. Yours may be on your desktop or your start menu. Right click. You get a menu that shows the IE icon, again. Right click, click properties; you will see run with a choice of maxiamize normal etc. Take your choice. You probably do not want normal or maximized.

I have a tablet with Windows 8.1 installed and it's relatively new, so I'm not 100% sure if this problem is inherent with it or if it was something I did.

When I open a most windows, they will automatically maximize. ( This is a pain with dialog boxes.)
Note that I'm not talking about the aero snap feature (docking) when windows are dragged to an edge.
These windows return to their stored positions when normalized, and when closed in a normal state, will still open maximized the next time they are opened.

I have tested this with one of my own apps that writes its position and state to appdata, and Windows will force it to maximize regardless of the saved state.
(That is, in the code I tell it to display in a normal state and this is either ignored or it is maximized shortly after it is displayed. I think the latter is the case from seeing one window display normally briefly before being maximized. It works fine on other PCs.)

I have tried refreshing the install, and resetting the install, but I'm pretty sure it didn't rewrite the registry because I had turned off the aero snap feature, and it was still off after the reset.

Any help with this would be much appreciated because I have run out of options.

The problem with windows "auto-maximizing" has to do with one of two things: a) your mouse-pad settings... b) Windows 7 and 8 Ease Of Access features.

Under Ease of Access features, Auto-maximizing is enabled by default, and lets you drag any open application window to the top of your screen and then, when you let it go, the window will change from sized to full screen. If you move it to the right or left edge it will open the windows to full screen size vertically and half screen size horizontally. To turn this feature off simply open up the Control Panel, then the Ease of Access Center. Click on the section called Make the mouse easier to use and check the box next to Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen. Once you click OK your windows will stay the size you set no matter where you move them.

As for mouse-pad settings, A double click on the upper border of a window will always maximize it. When you move a window, you "grab it" & move... after you drop it, you then have to again touch the mousepad to move your curser... this registers as a double-click on the border (i.e., a request to maximize.) The only way to deal with that is to play around with those mouse-pad settings... (1) the speed of double click required for the system to recognize it as a double click, and (2) the pressure required to register a click.

I have a Linksys WUSB600N wireless network adapter. I used it in Vista using Linksys's driver for it, and it worked great. Now Windows 7 has installed it's own driver for it and... well, the driver sucks. Frequent connection drops, bad signal strength, etc etc. I've been trying to uninstall the driver Windows installed and get the Linksys one, but no matter what I do it always reinstalls the driver as soon as it detects the device again after I uninstall it.

I've searched around this forum and tried many things... setting Windows Update not to automatically install drivers, using safe mode, etc etc, nothing works. Windows is being particularly stubborn about wanting to install it's own horrible driver.

Anybody know of a fix for this? Thanks.

I have a partitioned hard drive and I use the C drive only for systems and programs etc. All my personal stuff is kept on my E drive which I keep neatly organised with a folder structure that works for me. However Windows keeps automatically cluttering up my E drive by creating 10 root level folders, and even if I delete them they are recreated. I cannot understand why this feature exists, but more importantly how can I stop it from happening?? It makes it so confusing because I already have subfolders in my own folder structure with the same name and it's just confusing and a cluttered mess. I'd be so grateful if anyone can tell me how to stop this really annoying feature of window please...??

A:How to stop Windows auto creating root level folders??

First of all, What are the names of these folders ? and certainly it is not a Windows feature. The Folders that are created by Windows on root level are $RECYCLE.BIN (contains deleted files), System Volume Information (contains System Restore points) among with other hidden files such pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys under C: drive, they are hidden and you can not move to a sub folder. If you have folders created under E: drive then it must have been from some third party applications which you have to find out what it is and usually there's an option to configure where the folders should be created.

I reserved the Windows 10 upgrade on my 8.1 laptop. At least I thought I reserved it only.
I was reading a web page and noticed my DSL data light blinking like crazy.
I finally went to "windows update" and it showed Windows 10 was downloading (12% complete).
I cancelled it.
I changed the update settings to manual.
Now when I check for updates, Windows 10 starts downloading again, so I cancel it again or it indicates Windows 10 failed.
No other updates appear, just Windows 10.
Apparently I clicked the wrong thing and now I can't get out of this loop.
My question is, how do I get back to where when I check for updates manually the important and recommended updates appear and the Windows 10 update does not appear?
Thank you for helping me get out of this mess.

I am using temporarily a mobile broadband service which is very expensive, and is charged by downloads. Unfortunately, this will last for the next 4 months.

So I went in and set Windows to "Never search for updates" or some such effect.

To my horror, it does not seem to work. Every time I log on, it would start downloading a whole heap of data, like Tens of MB in just a few minutes. I looked at the Network Activities on Task Manage ( Advanced Resource Monitor), and notice this download comes from IP address, I matched its PID and found a number of processes have the same ID, one of them is Windows Update. The image of the process is svchosts.exe(svcnts).

Am I barking up the right tree, that it is Windows Update still doing its job? Or could it be something else that I am not aware of. I set up the options for my Firefox, Adobe etc. to stop updating, and even disabled their service in "msconfig".

So if anyone else knows how do I kill or stop this download?

I do not want to upgrade my computer from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10!
Here's what I've done so far.
First - I unchecked the Windows 10 upgrade box in the optional update list.
Then I right-clicked on it and chose to hide the upgrade.
The upgrade still started downloading with the selected, important updates so I stopped the download which
also stopped all of the other updates from downloading.
I read that you could do a search for KB3035583 and choose to uninstall it, which I did. But on my next
attempt to install just the important updates, Windows 10 began downloading again before any of the other
updates could be installed.
I did stop the download again, but I know it will start as soon as I attempt to download this month's updates.
~ Is there anything else I can do to stop it that won't mess up my computer?

A:How can I permanently stop the Windows 10 automatic upgrade/download?

Hello, LadyFirst!
I will be doing my best to assist you today with any questions you may have. Firstly, I would like to say that you have made the right choice by deciding to stay with Windows 8.1 as Windows 10 has many security issues, compatibility issues and privacy issues that grow more concerning as we learn more about the policies. I do see that you already know to remove the update 'KB3035583' which has gave the option to upgrade to Windows 10. A way to resolve this issue of the update coming back, would be to right click and 'hide update' and then it shouldn't install at anytime. I hope I was able to be of assistance to you in resolving your issue!
Stay safe!

Enabled Windows updates, it caused my mouse and keyboard to stop working (except in the BIOS), so I did a restore. The problem then was *after* logging into Windows (using my keyboard to type the password and login), Windows searches for updates for my USB keyboard and after they are installed (takes about 2 minutes), the keyboard just stops working. The LEDs stay on, "extra" buttons on the keyboard (such as the music button to open Windows Media Player) still work, but that's it. I tried a second USB keyboard, it has the same problem (LEDs are on, extra buttons work, nothing else).

So, I restore again, unplug my keyboard so it doesn't auto-update and disable auto-updates for drivers for all peripherals on my PC. Then I plug in the keyboard, it doesn't try to update anything and my keyboard is working again.

The problem:

This is not a long term solution because eventually I will want Windows to auto-install drivers for any new hardware I get. Clearly the latest Windows keyboard drivers are faulty, so what can I do about this?

Hello, How can i downgrade a laptop that came pre-installed with Windows 7?  It was automatically upgraded to Windows 10 and runs too slowly.  Microsoft will not let me download image, instead they direct me to Lenovo.  I called the Lenovo number listed in one of the posts on here, but after giving the rep my serial number, they told me to call Thinkpad support.  I thought I would check here before continuing to run around.  Thanks

We have a windows update group policy applied to various users machines in our domain. The policy is to automatically restart / update users machines if they are logged off. This does not appear to be working in any case.

I have compared the registry settings on machines to what they should be if the policy applied and they are correct:

AUOptions - 4
NoAutoRebootedWithLoggedOnUsers - 1
ScheduledInstallDay - 0
ScheduledInstallTime- 1

This would imply the install / restart should be happening automatically at 1am if no user is logged on.

When users come in in the morning and log in they immediately get a "Restart your machine to finish installing updates" dialogue and it is driving us insane!

Can anyone please advise ?

Hi Everyone
I do a lot of work on multiple picture choosing on windows 7 with 3x 27" screens.
When I open multiple Windows Photo Viewer iterations, e.g. 7 or more up to 14 with different pics and try to change the order of them left or right for a storyboard, ALL but the one I'm moving is Minimized to the title bar. ANY other app open is also
minimized. This action is capricious/arbitrary and doesn't happen every time.
Regardless, It drives me nuts. Is the anyway to defeat this crazy wizard that does this?
Many thanks to anyone who can assist. It will keep me out of the Looney Bin.

Hi Guys,

Windows 7 auto-updated last night, and left me with a big mess today.

A lot of windows services are not responding at all, will not open, some freeze ect...

It all started with windows getting stuck at the blue screen, something along the lines of preparing windows ect, do not shut down. It kept looping on restart.

I got it to finally get to windows but..

Windows Update (does not open at all)
System Restore Opens *but* I apparently do not have any restore points
Safe Mode with Network boots to a black screen (safe mode in all 4 corners though)
Microsoft excel does not open
Cannot uninstall Microsoft starter 2010

I deleted all files under c>windows>softwaredistribution>download

I downloaded the service pack 1 manually from Microsoft website, the .exe file will not run at all.

So there it is, I can browse the internet but most windows services do not run.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:A lot of Windows Services not responding after Auto-Update...Windows 7

Download Windows 7 Services Repair to your desktop.
Important that this tool is on Desktop!
Right Click Run as Administrator.
Type 2 into the CMD window, hit enter.
Allow it to complete.
Then type 3 into the Command window, hit enter.
Allow that to complete as well.
Then reboot your machine.

Windows 7 prof started installing updates before shutdown. When computer turned on again, it would not boot and the mouse was not to be found. Error message said could not repair the problem and showed option of system restore. Since there was no mouse working I had no cursor and could not choose system restore as a result. After two or three tries, I did control alt delete during startup and windows loaded normally. I think it finished configuring updates then acted normally. Afraid now to turn it off. Any ideas?

Hi guys,

i bought a win 7 pro license but when i went to activate it says windows is activated
with the ask for genuine microsoft software logo software on the right

there is no option to change the key...
i dont remember activating during install and assumed i would get the 3 days before the nag screen
i used a dell windows 7 pro 64 bit install disk...how is this possible?

any ideas?
i suppose i can change the key via other means...but is it necessary as i could use the license on another box...

what would you do?

A:Does windows 7 auto activate if windows 8 original?

There's your problem, you used a Dell disc. Dell, and some other OEM's, embed the keys into the installation disc. You shouldn't use a Dell disc except on the Dell computers its designed for. Change the key and do a proper activation to keep your client legal.

Hi tkmuthuvel

Right click on the Desktop
Properties > Screen saver tab
Uncheck the option for: On resume, display Welcome screen
Apply, OK to save and close.
If that doesn't work:
Right click on the Desktop
Properties > Screen saver tab > Power button > Advanced tab
Uncheck: Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby
Apply, OK, OK to save and close.

You can also set the power schemes on the Power tab to Always On

Let us know if that works for you or not.

I want to upgrade my Acer Aspire Notebook from Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit to Windows 7 SP1 32-bit.  It qualifies for the "Supported Upgrade Scenerios" and my system passed the Windows 7 install compatibility test.  I found
the Windows 7 download page, but when I enter the Microsoft Product Key on the back of my Acer Aspire Notebook it doesn't accept it.
How do I resolve this problem?  I can't get Chat to work (loops me back to automated system) and I can't find a email or phone number for Microsoft to assist me.
Please help.  Thank you.
TO CLARIFY: Entering the product key on the microsoft windows 7 download page in order to do the download is where the key fails, not during installation.  I can't even get past the download approval.
